I've spoken to thousands of ADHD and autistic people on my podcast, and this is the thing that stands out. They avoid some social situations, not because they're antisocial, but because they have a low tolerance for drama and inauthentic behavior. And that's the thing. just allergic to nonsense. Their nervous system learned something really early on, and that's that constant drama equals emotional exhaustion. So now they protect their peace. Small talk feels inauthentic and draining. Fake smiles annoy them. Performative friendships feel unsafe. Silence feels honest. People with ADHD and autism don't avoid people, they avoid emotional labor that goes nowhere. There's a difference. When they do show up,
it's for deep conversations. It's intentional. Maybe they have fewer friends, but the value of those friendships is huge. They're not antisocial, they're selective, and that's a sign of high emotional intelligence.
