Kevin Hart: Why overnight success is a thirteen-year grind

Hart argues that many people stay stuck because they repeatedly quit at year two or three to start something else, never completing anything. He chose stand-up comedy as the one thing he would "finish," believing that if he became a truly great headliner, it would unlock everything else. This deep focus ultimately gave him the leverage and credibility to break into movies, production, and business.

It took roughly 13 years from Hart’s first open mic to his true breakout via Shaq’s All Star Comedy Jam and the Seriously Funny special. During that time he was often broke, doing 25–28 sets every weekend, driving from Philadelphia to New York and later restarting in Los Angeles. He stresses that those "training years" are where craft, resilience, and readiness for the big moment are forged.

Hart says his real business education began when he stopped pretending to understand and started explicitly asking, "What does that mean? How does that work?"—about investing, stock markets, partnerships, and business structures. By verbalizing his ignorance rather than hiding it, he gained access to better conversations, opportunities, and eventually learned how multiples, equity, and long-term revenue actually work.

Hart treats his stand-up and entertainment career as the "deep vertical" that gave him visibility, credibility, and access. He then used that exposure to build Heartbeat Productions, Heartbeat Ventures, and high-impact brand partnerships (e.g., Chase, C4, Fabletics, Gran Coramino). He intentionally integrates these brands into his films, specials, and activations, using his core craft to create an ecosystem of ownership and recurring value.

Hart emphasizes that emotional attachment can hurt businesses, especially when people hit their ceiling. He believes in growing with people where possible, but also in recognizing when new talent is needed and bringing in the "right personnel" to break through plateaus. Detaching personal feelings from necessary changes protects the broader team, brand, and long-term mission.
