Bowhunting Simulator Warm‑Up & Momentum Generation Premise

    1. JR

Yeah. He's, uh, I think he's too smart. He's too smart to talk to regular people.

    2. SD

      Fun.

    3. JR

Boom! Powerful big wave surfer. How are you, buddy?

    4. SD

      I'm great. (laughs)

    5. JR

We just got back from playing a little Tekno Hunt.

    6. SD

      We did, man. Ah-

    7. JR

Greatest thing of all time, right?

    8. SD

I was just saying, I, I don't care what the price is, it's worth it.

    9. JR

      (laughs)

    10. SD

It's a, it's a bargain at twice the price, or whatever it is. (laughs)

    11. JR

Yeah. For people who don't know what it is, it's this game that it simulates bow hunting. So, what it is, is it's a giant screen that's made out of Kevlar, and then, uh, it's got a s- like a projector, projects HD images of elk and deer. Y- you can set it up for a bunch of different animals, but elk and deer walk across the screen. And you shoot at 'em, and it's like the perfect... There's a, we show a little video of Shane doing it earlier.

    12. SD

      (laughs) It's really cool, man.

    13. JR

But it's, it's a perfect practice for bow hunting, because one of the things about bow hunting is it, you get nervous. And the more you could do something like this, where you just shot a perfect shot, the more you can do that over and over and over again, the more it becomes ingrained in your, your, your nervous system. I mean, ingrained in your muscles, ingrained in your memory, and then it becomes natural.

    14. SD

      Yeah. It's awesome.

    15. JR

      Yeah. It's pretty dope.

    16. SD

We're gonna make this podcast about 15 minutes long, go back and shoot some more. (laughs)

    17. JR

(laughs) Yeah. That's what we... We were actually talking about cutting off the podcast short just for that.

    18. SD

      (laughs)

    19. JR

So, tell me about this movie, man.

    20. SD

Yeah. So, I'm in LA for the premiere, the HBO premiere, of The Momentum Generation. It's a, it's a, uh, it's a sports documentary they, that, uh, that HBO and Robert Redford did. So, it's cool, man. It's, it's, it's really cool. It's um, it's a story about my friends and I. We, you know, we all grew up, uh, competitive surfers and in high school, we all sort of met each other through, through competitions, competing. So, this tells the story of how we basically, how we met, how we grew up, um, and how we became friends and family, basically. Like, traveling around the world, you know, together, as basically like little kids with no, with no chaperones on, on tour around the world.

    21. JR

      Wow.

    22. SD

      So, it's fucking crazy. It's a, it's a wild story.

    23. JR

Pull this up to your... Like, keep this like a fist away from your face.

    24. SD

      All right.

    25. JR

Mm, how old were you when you first started surfing?

    26. SD

I s- started surfing on a standup surfboard when I was five.

    27. JR

And when did you start traveling to surf?

    28. SD

When I was 12, I went to England for the w- the World Amateur Championships.

    29. JR

      Wow.

    30. SD

So, I was on the Hawaii team.

Growing Up Surfing: Broken Homes, Found Family, and Competition

    1. SD

we were competing for a world title. We were all competing and going around the world all the time, staying together. So, we became best friends, like this nucleus of surfers. And we all just became ultra-close. And then, when things get, got really serious with the surfing competition, and there was a lot on the line with sponsors and money and big brands coming in, the shit hit the fan and then we started like breaking up. It got too serious. Uh, it, it was almost like a band who just couldn't stand each other anymore, or things got too radical, or, you know, girls got in the way, or money got in the way. And so, there was like this kinda like breaking up element, you know, throughout our group.

    2. JR

Wow. I would imagine, when you're living like that, those people must be so valuable for you, though. People that can understand your way of life, because it's their way of life too. 'Cause like to, to a regular person who commutes every day and goes to an office and comes home, like, your life is alien.

    3. SD

Yeah. It is. I still get w- uh, like I still get uncomfortable when people ask me what I do for a living.

    4. JR

      (laughs)

    5. SD

Y- you know, like I'll, like I'll be in like a normal random setting and someone will be like, "Oh, yeah, what do you do for a living?" I'm like, "No."

    6. JR

      Oh.

    7. SD

"Don't, d- do not ask me that."

    8. JR

      (laughs)

    9. SD

'Cause nobody understands, you know? It's like...

    10. JR

      What do you tell them?

    11. SD

I, I tell them the truth, but it's... I just tell, always tell 'em like, "It's, it's really hard to explain, but I surf for a living." I mean, what the fuck is that?

    12. JR

And do they... Yeah, do they go, "How does that work? How do you get paid?"

    13. SD

Yes. All the time. Man, I just go, "I have no idea. I gotta check every now and then."

    14. JR

Well, you don't necessarily compete any longer, right?

    15. SD

      No, not at all.

    16. JR

You just ru- ride big waves.

    17. SD

I do. I ride big waves. That's my focus, and I also ride all kinds of waves. I surf every day, and you know, the waves don't get big that often.

    18. JR

      Right.

    19. SD

But when the waves are biggest, I'm on it.

    20. JR

Yeah. For a person that like is just meeting you for the first time and doesn't understand surfing and is trying to wrap their head around making a living-

    21. SD

      Yeah.

    22. JR

... riding the waves of the ocean.

    23. SD

      It's like, "How? Why? What?"

    24. JR

      (laughs)

    25. SD

      (laughs) It's weird.

    26. JR

Like, "Wait a minute, no, I went to accounting school." (laughs)

    27. SD

And I, and I don't have... There's not like a, there's nothing... I mean, there's, there's not like another category I can really point to, to, to, to make the point go quicker, to... There's not like, um, you know, it's like there's basketball players and football players, and all of them are like scoring goals and getting these brand endorsements from that, from competition element, so.

    28. JR

      Right.

    29. SD

Because I'm a free surfer who doesn't compete at all, it's just, it's hard to wrap your head around. But basically-

    30. JR

      That's even harder. Yeah.

  3. 13:0025:00

    From Hyper‑Competitive Shit‑Talker to Laid‑Back Waterman

    1. SD

or something happens with their... You can see it in their eyes. You can see it in their body language. All of a sudden they lose that, that edge, that mindset, and they're basically have already lost, even though it's like right in the middle of the round.

    2. JR

      Sometimes, yeah.

    3. SD

And then you see one guy just like...

    4. JR

The, one of the c- crazy things about fighting is it's so unpredictable. Even when you think a guy's gonna lose, sometimes they come back and win w- by knockout, like outta nowhere.

    5. SD

      I watched that fight-

    6. JR

      It's just a crazy sport.

    7. SD

      Who, who, who's-

    8. JR

      Derek Luce?

    9. SD

Yeah, the guy with the awesome Instagram?

    10. JR

      Yeah.

    11. SD

      The big, black dude?

    12. JR

      Yes. (laughs)

    13. SD

Dude, he was losing that fight.

    14. JR

      Yes.

    15. SD

      I, I'm not a fight-

    16. JR

      Yes.

    17. SD

      ... nerd.

    18. JR

No, he was getting fucked up.

    19. SD

But he was losi- I'm like, "Dude, that guy's losing the fight. There's zero chance to win." Next thing you know, he won.

    20. JR

      Yeah, but I-

    21. SD

That was, that was so exciting.

    22. JR

Volkov, the guy he beat had just beaten Fabricio Werdum, who's a former heavyweight champion.

    23. SD

      Yeah.

    24. JR

Beat him by knockout. So, uh, Alexander's the real deal. I mean, he's, uh, he was what I thought was the dark horse in-

    25. SD

      Yeah.

    26. JR

... the heavyweight division. But he stood in front of Derek for too long, and Derek hit him with a fucking bomb. He had hurt him earlier too, because Derek, Derek hit him and knocked his mouthpiece out, and he didn't know his mouthpiece was gone.

    27. SD

      Yeah.

    28. JR

So the referee was trying to give him the mouthpiece.

    29. SD

      That was nuts. Yeah.

    30. JR

And he's like, "No, that's not my mouthpiece. That's his mouthpiece." And the referee's like, "Motherfucker, you don't have a mouthpiece. I'm holding your mouthpiece. That's your mouthpiece."

  4. 25:0035:00

Performance Mindset, Flow State, and Emotional Control

    1. JR

me such anxiety, watching this. How big is that wave?

    2. SD

I don't know, probably 60 feet on the face at the start.

    3. JR

      God damn, son. Oh.

    4. SD

      Yeah.

    5. JR

What does that feel like right there when it's over?

    6. SD

This part's cool. Watch. I get air on the way down.

    7. JR

      Oh, my God.

    8. SD

You'll see my board goes completely in the air. Right there.

    9. JR

      Whoa! (laughs)

    10. SD

      (laughs)

    11. JR

Dude! Dude, you are so high! That is so high.

    12. SD

      Yeah.

    13. JR

That wave is so giant. It's like 40 feet above your head right now. Oh, my God. This gives me anxiety.

    14. SD

You know what's cool about surfing, is in those moments, like, there's very few things in the world other than, like... I don't know, I don't know how to relate that. But, um, like, that moment right there for me was like the pinnacle of, like, who I am, what I do best. That moment, that wave coming in at that, at that minute in my life where I was in right square foot of the ocean, when that wave came in, that was the best. That was one of the best days in history at that surf spot.

    15. JR

      Wow.

    16. SD

Um, and I was there, I was prepared, I was healthy. I had the right board, the right equipment, the right energy level. I wasn't sick, I didn't have any... You know, everything was just lined up. And the waves were lined up, and the swell was lined up, and the wind was lined up, and the tide was lined up, and I was in a perfect spot when that wave came in.

    17. JR

Do you watch that video all the time?

    18. SD

      No.

    19. NA

      (laughs)

    20. SD

But every time I do, I remember all those things because it seems so much, so, so much luck had to do with it. It was just like an alignment-

    21. JR

      Yeah.

    22. SD

      ... stars aligning.

    23. JR

      That almost seems like something-

    24. NA

      (laughs)

    25. JR

... I'd wanna watch every day. Like, right, get, get the day going.

    26. SD

You know your first kiss from a girl?

    27. JR

      Yeah.

    28. SD

      That's what that is.

    29. JR

      Wow.

    30. SD

That (imitates explosion) like, mind blown.

  5. 35:0055:20

Surfing as Lifestyle vs. Sport and Why It’s So Hard

    1. SD

groups of friends and family, and he's always cooking and entertaining. I, I, I, I love that about him. Like, when, when we were on Lanai, he'd cook for, like, 10 of us.

    2. JR

      Yeah. Yeah, that was awesome.

    3. SD

Incredible meals. And everything was wild game. It was just freaking awesome.

    4. JR

      That Lanai trip, man.

    5. SD

      Yeah.

    6. JR

That is the... I look forward to that every year.

    7. SD

      Yes.

    8. JR

It's like the highlight of my year.

    9. SD

      Yeah.

    10. JR

You know? When are we doing it this year?

    11. SD

I know, right? We gotta talk dates.

    12. JR

      We gotta figure out, yeah.

    13. SD

      We gotta talk dates.

    14. JR

We gotta figure out the dates. 'Cause that last year was so amazing to have everybody down there and-

    15. SD

      Yeah.

    16. JR

... you know, and everybody just-

    17. SD

      Such a good crew.

    18. JR

Oh, it was so fucking cool.

    19. SD

      Yeah.

    20. JR

You know, Green Tree and Cam and... Yeah, it's, it's just awesome. And then the first, first year we invented the Cat Lady drink.

    21. SD

      Yeah. (laughs)

    22. JR

      (laughs) That one ridiculous podcast.

    23. SD

It's lived on 2000s... Yeah. That was ridiculous.

    24. JR

I don't know, I think Dudley might be still drinking it. I don't think anybody else is.

    25. SD

      (laughs)

    26. JR

It kinda died off. Red Bull and wine and, what was it, tequila?

    27. SD

      That was a lot.

    28. JR

      Oh.

    29. SD

A little bit ambitious. That was, uh-

    30. JR

      Fucking nasty as it was.

  6. 55:201:09:10

Chasing Giant Waves and Peak Life Moments

    1. JR

And he would fly six, for six months of the year, he would fly and give these lectures in like, you know, Austin and San Francisco-

    2. SD

      Yeah.

    3. JR

... and all over the world really. And then he would, uh, fly back and live on the Big Island and write books.

    4. SD

      Yeah.

    5. JR

      So-

    6. SD

It's a cool place to live, man.

    7. JR

      Yeah.

    8. SD

It's awesome. I love living there.

    9. JR

And if you're a bow hunter, it's not a bad place either, right?

    10. SD

Not, it's not a bad place either.

    11. JR

      Yeah.

    12. SD

Hawaii is in- incredible for hunting.

    13. JR

Well, also this is incredible for people. Everybody's got a really good attitude there. It's like, it's more... You know, I just got back from Manhattan, which I love.

    14. SD

      Yeah.

    15. JR

I love going to New York City. And, but every time I go there, I'm like, "I don't think I could do this. I don't think I could live here."

    16. SD

      Yeah.

    17. JR

It's just, it's too stacked on top of things. And there was this f- one thing that I'd seen there that I'd never seen before, they had, like, this rotat- rotating machine that you park cars on. So say, if you parked your car in here, it would lift up-

    18. SD

      Yeah.

    19. JR

      ... like this.

    20. SD

      Yeah.

    21. JR

And then your car would go, like, up here, and then underneath there would be like 30 cars underneath you.

    22. SD

      Yeah.

    23. JR

I was like, "What the fuck is that?"

    24. SD

I've seen that in Tokyo. Crazy, dude.

    25. JR

      Yeah. That's-

    26. SD

And you can rent one of those spots, one of those, one of those car spots for, like, huge bucks in Tokyo.

    27. JR

      I'm sure.

    28. SD

      Like 50 grand a year.

    29. JR

      Well, Tokyo-

    30. SD

For like a t- for, for like a parking spot at your building where you live.
