First time in LA: city chaos, travel impressions, and podcast run

    1. JR

And we're live. What's going on, brother? How are you?

    2. ZU

I'm awesome, man. It's good to be here.

    3. JR

Good to have you here, man.

    4. ZU

      Thank you.

    5. JR

I've never had a guy come and wear his own hat and his own T-shirt. You're number one. You're the first.

    6. ZU

      I'm, I'm surprised by that

    7. JV

      (laughs)

    8. JR

... given how many podcasts you've done, but, uh, that's how I roll. I don't know if anybody's ever come and wearing their own shirt. Jamie?

    9. JV

      Mm-hmm.

    10. JR

      Any thoughts?

    11. JV

      Someone has to have.

    12. JR

Someone has to have, I just can't recall it.

    13. JV

Yeah, I don't know off the top of my head.

    14. JR

Definitely no one has worn their own hat and their own shirt.

    15. ZU

      Oh, yeah?

    16. JR

Maybe Eddie's worn his own shirt, but that's a 10th Planet shirt, that doesn't totally count.

    17. ZU

It's a shirt with my face on it, too, so...

    18. JR

      That's a triple whammy.

    19. ZU

      (laughs)

    20. JV

      Ari?

    21. JR

      Ari?

    22. JV

Wanna get a new shirt or something?

    23. JR

      Maybe.

    24. JV

      Maybe. I don't know.

    25. JR

I don't think so. Maybe. Anyway, what's going on, man? How long you here for?

    26. ZU

I'm all good, man. I'm in LA for two weeks. It's my very first time here, so I just got here two days ago, so just kinda soaking it in.

    27. JR

What's the mind fuck like? It's crazy, huh?

    28. ZU

      It's weird, man.

    29. JR

      (laughs)

    30. ZU

I feel like, uh, I was driving ar- I was driving around just in an Uber, and it feels like GTA. I think more like GTA feels like LA, 'cause that's what it's based on. But, uh, it was just kinda trippy. And, uh-

  2. 3:186:30

The women’s powerlifting stunt: trans categories, biology, and fairness in sport

    1. JR

What about you? Did you get any-

    2. ZU

      Myself.

    3. JR

For people don't know, uh, Zuby won the World Championships in women's powerlifting.

    4. ZU

      (laughs)

    5. JR

Um, you identified as a woman for a brief period of time.

    6. ZU

      Yeah, nine seconds.

    7. JR

Just to lift. That's all you have to do.

    8. ZU

      Yeah.

    9. JR

I mean, this is the world we live in.

    10. ZU

Dude, that, that thing blew the internet up.

    11. JR

      (laughs)

    12. ZU

      Like, it's crazy-

    13. JR

      We were laughing.

    14. ZU

... it's insane how far it went, man. Yeah, no, I saw that. People, uh...

    15. JR

There it is. Let's, we should, we...

    16. ZU

      Yeah.

    17. JR

"PSI identifies as a woman whilst lifting the weight. Don't be a bigot." (laughs)

    18. ZU

You know, I think, I think when you first talked about that, I had like 40,000 followers. It's now well over 100 and, 115. And when I posted it, I had 15,000 followers. So I've gained a hundred and, I've gained like-

    19. JR

    20. ZU

Yeah, like 105 thou- 105,000 followers since that video.

    21. JR

      It worked. Congratulations.

    22. ZU

      Yeah, thanks, man.

    23. JR

But it really does highlight how preposterous these new w- world rules that we have regarding gender are. But, uh, to their credit, the US Powerlifting Federation, I believe that's the name of the organization, they just banned transgender women from competing.

    24. ZU

      Mm-hmm. Okay.

    25. JR

      They said, "Stop."

    26. ZU

      Just outright. Just flat.

    27. JR

      There's enough, enough of that.

    28. ZU

      Yeah.

    29. JR

I think if you wanna compete... I don't think there's anything wrong with transgender women competing, but I think they should compete against transgender women. Just like how we have men compete against men and we have women compete against women.

    30. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

  3. 6:307:36

New album, merch, and a short fitness book: training, nutrition, mindset

    1. ZU

Yeah, it's a bad idea. Oh, oh, by the way, I, I brought a couple things for you, man.

    2. JV

      Okay.

    3. ZU

      Just, uh... So that's, uh...

    4. JR

      Is it a Zuby T-shirt?

    5. ZU

      It's my latest album.

    6. JR

      Oh, there we go.

    7. ZU

That is a Zuby T-shirt. That one actually glows in the dark.

    8. JR

      It glows in the dark?

    9. ZU

It does. The T of Zuby glows in the dark.

    10. JR

Is it good for the environment?

    11. ZU

      Uh, hopefully.

    12. JR

Does it kill turtles? Does it kill turtles?

    13. ZU

      Um, not that aggressively.

    14. JR

      (laughs)

    15. ZU

And that's, uh, my new fitness book there as well.

    16. JR

      Oh, you have a book?

    17. ZU

I'm sure you alre- you already know all that.

    18. JR

      Oh, no shit, man.

    19. ZU

      But, uh, yeah, man.

    20. JR

What is, um... Is it basic... Oh, it's workout routines and-

    21. ZU

Yeah, it's just giving people what they need to know about, uh, nutrition, training, mindset, motivation. I just wanted to keep it brief and concise, all the stuff that I think is most important that people need to know, whether they're beginners or intermediates.

    22. JR

Oh, this is a good-sized book to read.

    23. ZU

Yeah, I put it out first as an e-book, but then, um, a lot of people asked me to do a physical copy, so-

    24. JR

      Oh, that's cool.

    25. ZU

... I did those just before leaving the UK, and they've essentially sold out already, so...

    26. JR

      Nice. Congratulations on that.

    27. ZU

      You're welcome.

    28. JR

All you lazy fucks, get out there. This is a good book for you because it's short, you don't have to... When people see a fat book, they're like, "Oh, too much work."

    29. ZU

      (laughs)

    30. JR

But this is, uh, not even 100 pages. It's 86... What is it? Uh, 93 pages.

  4. 7:3610:37

Zuby’s background: UK-born, raised in Saudi, Nigerian roots, rugby and lifting

    1. JR

We can all, we can all benefit. What is, what is your background athletically?

    2. ZU

Athletically, um, I used to actually play rugby.

    3. JR

      Oh.

    4. ZU

Yeah, so I- I don't know how much you know about my background. So I was born in the UK, I grew up in Saudi Arabia. So when I lived-

    5. JR

      Oh.

    6. ZU

Yeah, when I lived in Saudi, um, I used to play baseball and football, or what you guys would call soccer. And, um, those were my sort of main sports. I also did swimming and a bunch of other things. And then I went to the UK for boarding school, actually, when I was 11 years old.

    7. JR

      Dude.

    8. ZU

And, uh, there's no, there's no baseball there, so I... Yeah, rugby became my main sport. I started playing rugby when I was 11 years old, and I played that all the way through to university. And I got into just lifting weights and stuff when I was in my mid-teens.

    9. JR

I have a friend who's British and he says that that is way more common in, in Europe, in the UK, sending kids off to boarding school.

    10. ZU

Um, yeah, I do, I do think so. Um, I mean, with me, it was largely because I was in the American sys- school system in Saudi Arabia. So after fifth grade, be- 'cause there's a little bit of a transition between the two systems, they're, they're quite different. So it was thought that if I'd stayed all the way up until ninth grade, then it would be a little bit difficult for me to transition into the British school system and university system. So my parents decided, when I was 11, same with my, my older siblings, like we all went to boarding school when we were pretty young. So yeah, came, came back over to the UK and was kind of back and forth between the two countries for several years. And yeah, did things that way. But, um...

    11. JR

Were you... Was your dad in the military or something?

    12. ZU

No, my dad's actually a medical doctor.

    13. JR

      Oh, okay.

    14. ZU

Yeah, he's a medical doctor, but, um, he worked for a, a big oil company out in Saudi. So we lived there for a couple of, you know, two decades pretty much.

    15. JR

      What was that like?

    16. ZU

I enjoyed growing up in Saudi, man.

    17. JR

      Really?

    18. ZU

Yeah, yeah, I actually really liked it. Uh, it's-

    19. JR

What was, what was it like?

    20. ZU

It's weird, it reminds me of LA. (laughs)

    21. JR

      (laughs)

    22. ZU

      I'm being, I'm being serious.

    23. JR

      Why? A lot of hos?

    24. ZU

      Yeah, it's just be- (laughs)

    25. JR

      He lost his headphones.

    26. ZU

If there are... I wasn't ready for that. If there are, then you don't really, you don't really see them. Um, no, but just, uh, I think the, the heat and the, the way, the way the roads are, the way it looks, actually.

    27. JR

      Really?

    28. ZU

Yeah. 'Cause if you live, uh... Like, where I lived was sort of an expat community, basically. So we lived kind of in a compound. So where I lived was a little bit of a, little bit of a bubble. And then outside of that, you kind of got what, what I'd call the real, the real Saudi. So if you go out into the city or you wanna go shopping or something like that, then you're out there in the real city. So it's, it's very, very different. Um, it's interesting with me because my, my family background's originally from Nigeria, but then I was born in England. I live in England now, but I lived in Saudi Arabia for 19 years or so. So I've kind of had exposure, a lot-

    29. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    30. ZU

... to, to three different, three very different cultures and ways of doing things, and even laws and just the way society is structured and stuff like that. So I think it's given me a pretty interesting and unique perspective on quite a lot of things.

  5. 10:3717:38

Nigerian scams and the “nonexistent airport” con: ingenuity, desperation, and gullibility

    1. JR

Nigeria is a strange spot, because I've never, I've never been, but when you look at the numbers of successful immigrants, like businessmen and people that have come over from Nigeria and how industrious they are, and then you look at how many successful Nigerian scammers there are-

    2. ZU

      (laughs)

    3. JR

      ... it's a wise, s- very clever place.

    4. ZU

You got the email from the prince too, huh?

    5. JR

      I didn't get it.

    6. ZU

      Okay.

    7. JR

Well, I'm sure I have, but, um, the... What I was thinking about was Jamie was telling me a story yesterday about a guy who... What did he sell? Oh, he sold a nonexistent bank.

    8. JV

      Airport.

    9. JR

      Airport.

    10. ZU

      To a bank.

    11. JV

      To a bank.

    12. JR

      Yeah.

    13. ZU

      To a bank.

    14. JR

To a... That's right. He sold a nonexistent airport to a ban- There's been several stories over the last couple of weeks about Nigerian scammers making big scores.

    15. ZU

Yeah, there's one that I think closed down a Brazilian bank. That they, they took so much of their money that the bank had to sh-

    16. JR

      (laughs)

    17. ZU

... the bank had to shut down.

    18. JR

      What is it about Nigeria?

    19. ZU

      (laughs)

    20. JV

      (laughs)

    21. JR

Why are they so good at that?

    22. ZU

Uh, lot of, lot of smart and enterprising people. And I think if that's channeled in the right way, then that's a, a very good thing, but I think some people-

    23. JR

Well, obviously, there's... The resources are very limited, so they're, they're deciding to just go dark and f- scam people. But as a person who hasn't been a victim of this-

    24. ZU

      Yeah.

    25. JR

      ... it's quite amusing.

    26. ZU

Yeah, I mean, if you see, if you see some of the stuff that, that can get pulled off, it's, uh, it- it's quite impressive, you know.

    27. JR

      Pull that story up.

    28. ZU

It is, it is very much like, man...

    29. JV

It was actually 330 equivalent to American dollars, $330 million.

    30. JR

      (laughs) Jesus Christ.

  6. 17:3832:32

Megachurches and “prosperity gospel”: when religion becomes a money machine

    1. JR

That's true, but if you pay attention to televangelists.

    2. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    3. JR

Do you have those in the UK?

    4. ZU

Not like the ones in the US.

    5. JR

      (laughs)

    6. ZU

In the US it's another level. You are, you, US, it's another level, man. Um...

    7. JR

      Everything's another level over here.

    8. ZU

      Yeah, everything's bigger, like-

    9. JR

      Yeah.

    10. ZU

      ... including... I mean, you got those megachurches and s-... I don't-

    11. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    12. ZU

There's probably one or two megachurches out there in the UK or in Europe in general, but not-

    13. JR

      One or two.

    14. ZU

      ... at this scale.

    15. JR

      That's it?

    16. ZU

I don't know. I- I'm not even aware of any. I'm kind of hedging my bet saying there's probably a couple, but I'm not aware of any, not at this scale.

    17. JR

How many megachurches do you think we have in America? How many do you think we just have in Texas?

    18. ZU

      Yeah.

    19. JR

Texas might have a million of them. (laughs)

    20. ZU

Yeah. Because, I mean, the guys who run those things, they're like-... I mean, they themselves just-

    21. JR

      Joe- Joel Osteen's here.

    22. ZU

Yeah, though, themselves are celebrities, right?

    23. JR

      Oh, yeah.

    24. JV

There's at least 10 'cause it says, here's an article about the 10 largest, so.

    25. JR

      In Texas?

    26. JV

      Yeah, just in Texas.

    27. ZU

      Wow.

    28. JV

      (laughs)

    29. JR

      (laughs)

    30. ZU

      Yeah, tho- those things are-

  7. 32:321:08:43

Presidents on stimulants: Trump slurring, JFK injections, and performance politics

    1. JR

Yeah, and, you know, as time goes on, one of the things that I've been noticing, and, uh, I watched a David Pakman video the other day where David Pakman's pointing out Trump slurring his speech. (coughs) And I had no idea it was that bad.

    2. ZU

      Oh, really?

    3. JR

I, I haven't seen it. I, I hadn't seen it. There was one time where he liter- I mean, literally, like, sh- he's fighting through... Like, say, if they, someone put you on pain medication, they said, "Hey, Zuby, you gotta make a phone call."

    4. ZU

      Yeah.

    5. JR

"Oh, this is really important. You're gonna talk to a bank." He'd be like, "Yes."

    6. ZU

      (laughs)

    7. JR

"That's me. Have you ever heard... God bless America."

    8. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    9. JR

Like, have you ever seen the video of him slurring?

    10. ZU

      I haven't, no, no.

    11. JR

      Dude.

    12. ZU

And it's not edited or anything.

    13. JR

Oh, no, no, no, no, no. It's... He has a really hard time saying "God bless America."

    14. ZU

      Okay.

    15. JR

And as Pakman pointed out, it looks like he's, like, wrestling with his tongue.

    16. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    17. JR

      There's something wrong.

    18. ZU

Oh, fair enough. I mean, I, when I see him, I mean, that guy's got some crazy energy for... How old is he? 70-

    19. JR

      73.

    20. ZU

      73?

    21. JR

      Yeah.

    22. ZU

That guy's got some, that guy's got energy, man.

    23. JR

      Yeah, it's called pills. (laughs)

    24. ZU

      (laughs)

    25. JR

      He's medicated. Find, find-

    26. ZU

That guy's got some energy. (laughs)

    27. JR

I, I'd be, uh, you know, you could fucking hop your grandma up on, on fucking speed too. She'd have all kinds of shit to say. (laughs)

    28. ZU

      (laughs)

    29. JR

Look, it's legal. You, you can get a doctor, "Doc, I'm suffering. I've, uh, I've got fatigue. I've, I, I, I have, uh, chronic fatigue." And the doctor go, "Well, good thing for you, we've got a thing called Adderall." And next thing you know-

    30. ZU

You think that's what it is?

  8. 45:3952:39

Comedy, activist media, and “canceling” narratives: Dave Chappelle backlash as a case study

    1. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    2. JR

... and the best evidence is Dave Chappelle.

    3. ZU

      Yeah.

    4. JR

Dave Chappelle's recent Sticks and Stones Netflix documentary-

    5. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    6. JR

... for whatever reason, Rotten Tomatoes thought it would be a good idea to only have it reviewed by five super progressive critics.

    7. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    8. JR

      Only critics.

    9. ZU

      Yeah.

    10. JR

They closed it off to the public.

    11. ZU

      Yeah.

    12. JR

And it got 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

    13. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    14. JR

They then opened it to the public, and it got 99%.

    15. ZU

      Of course.

    16. JR

If that doesn't show a crazy disparity between-

    17. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    18. JR

... first of all, the idea that you're gonna suppress it. Like you're gonna say it's 0% so no one's gonna watch it-

    19. ZU

      Yeah.

    20. JR

... and we're gonna shut Dave Chappelle down.

    21. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    22. JR

      He's canceled.

    23. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    24. JR

Fuck him. But people love him, right?

    25. ZU

You can't cancel someone who doesn't care, man.

    26. JR

Well, you can't cancel Dave Chappelle.

    27. ZU

      No, you can't.

    28. JR

But on top of that, th- like, th- th- th- how would they not understand that someone is going to know that you're not opening it up to the public?

    29. ZU

      Yeah.

    30. JR

And that once it does get opened to the public, you're gonna get a massive whiplash-

  9. 52:3958:14

Big tech censorship and deplatforming: Twitter’s scale problem, bans, and radicalization

    1. ZU

with myself and with other people and listening to what people are saying is people are starting to notice it a lot more. I know you've talked a lot about the online tech censorship and bias-

    2. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    3. ZU

... and stuff like that which is another thing that, again, I think if you went back 10 years ago, I don't think people thought that Facebook or Twitter or YouTube or any of these things were biased, whereas now in 2019 it's like, okay, you've got enough examples to see, okay, they're de- deplatforming a lot of people of certain political persuasions.

    4. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    5. ZU

And then you've got other people who are outright calling for violence or just saying, like, crazy stuff or threatening people and they're fine, they're turning a blind eye to it.

    6. JR

      Yeah.

    7. ZU

And it's so- it's just in your face and it's kinda like, well, this isn't me being a conspiracy theorist, it's just look, they've taken off that person, that person, that person, that person, but all these people are still there, so these rules are not being applied fairly.

    8. JR

That- that's certainly the case and it's also certainly the case that they're trying to manage this stuff at scale.

    9. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    10. JR

Right? So they're trying to manage like, one of the things that I got from communicating with Jack Dorsey, the head of Twitter, is that-

    11. ZU

You saw when he got hacked?

    12. JR

      Yes!

    13. ZU

      (laughs)

    14. JR

When the head of Twitter gets hacked, you're like, "Damn."

    15. ZU

      Oh, man. That was weird.

    16. JR

Apparently they used a very simple way to do it, SMS text.

    17. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    18. JR

Because they used to have a system where you could send texts through, you know, to- to Twitter through text messages and they hacked it that way.

    19. ZU

Yeah. That was so weird. I- I was on Twitter when it happened.

    20. JR

      Ugh.

    21. ZU

I was like scrolling through my feed and I was like-

    22. JR

      What?

    23. ZU

      ... oh, wait (laughs) .

    24. JR

      (laughs)

    25. ZU

I was like (laughs) , I was like wait, what's going on here? And it was just-

    26. JR

      Part of it is fun.

    27. ZU

      Yeah.

    28. JR

Right? Isn't it fun when someone like Jack gets hacked?

    29. ZU

      (laughs)

    30. JR

When someone like Jack gets hacked, it's like wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. The guy who's the fucking head of Twitter-

How social media breaks communication: pronouns in bios, misread tone, and anxiety features

    1. JR

And it also ... (sighs) look, here's the reality, man. Twitter's a terrible way to communicate.

    2. ZU

      (laughs)

    3. JR

It's fucking terrible. Limited amount of text. Text is a terrible way to communicate.

    4. ZU

      True.

    5. JR

I mean, we were just talking, Jamie and I were talking yesterday about, uh, disagreements that people have had that we know through emails.

    6. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    7. JR

Like that emails, like someone reads it wrong and then someone sends you a message, "Hey, you know, this guy is disrespecting me." And then you go and read it and you go, "What is going on here, man?"

    8. ZU

      Yeah.

    9. JR

'Cause people read into texts. They, they, they just decide that things in text mean certain things.

    10. ZU

      Yeah.

    11. JR

They might not really be accurate.

    12. ZU

      Yeah.

    13. JR

I think that's a problem. And I think that the, the method of communication through Twitter is just a terrible method. Twitter is good for letting people know you got things coming up. Like, "Hey, I got an album out."

    14. ZU

      Yep. Bang.

    15. JR

      Right there.

    16. ZU

      Perseverance.

    17. JR

      Perseverance, Zuby.

    18. ZU

      Yeah.

    19. JR

Twitter's good for, uh, I love it for posting science stories.

    20. ZU

      Okay, yeah.

    21. JR

      And interesting st- stories.

    22. ZU

Twitter's amazing. Twitter's the best social media platform by a mile.

    23. JR

I don't interact with people anymore.

    24. ZU

      (laughs)

    25. JR

      I don't even read it.

    26. ZU

      I don't blame you.

    27. JR

I send things to the world that I think are interesting-

    28. ZU

      Yeah.

    29. JR

... and I hope people enjoy it.

    30. ZU

      Yeah.

  11. 1:03:171:17:23

Selfies, validation culture, and body modification: from butt pics to ‘ab etching’

    1. ZU

It's crazy. All this social media stuff. I feel like we're just right now in the middle of sort of the biggest experiment amongst humankind that's ever taken place, and we're, you know, we're all guinea pigs in it. Like, we have no idea what the long-term implications and repercussions of some of this stuff is gonna be. But it's like we're all just in here using all these different platforms, and, uh, I mean, you can already see some of the effects.

    2. JR

      Yeah.

    3. ZU

It's, uh ... It seems pretty well-documented that things like depression and anxiety are going up as use of social media goes up. I mean, literally during the introduction of it with the smartphones ... It's the combination of smartphones and social media-

    4. JR

      Yeah.

    5. ZU

... I think, that does it. I don't think ... It's not smartphones alone, it's not social media alone. Like, when you had to go log in on a PC to use Myspace or Friendster or Hi5 or whatever, and then you go out the house, and you're no longer on it. It's just the fact people are constantly carrying it around and-

    6. JR

      Yeah.

    7. ZU

... trying to get this validation, and, you know, you've got Instagram now talking about potentially removing likes or changing-

    8. JR

      That's hilarious.

    9. ZU

... you know, YouTube removing views because they're seeing how it's affecting people and all this kinda stuff. And yeah, it's, uh, nuts.

    10. JR

That's not gonna work though. Th- the- the ... This is too late.

    11. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    12. JR

The box is open, you know? You're a grown-ass man, so for you, you can handle all this shit.

    13. ZU

      Yeah.

    14. JR

I think the real problem is kids.

    15. ZU

      Yeah.

    16. JR

Kids growing up being 13 and 14 and having Twitter and Instagram and Facebook and having a- anonymous people say really shitty things to them, anonymous friends or enemies at school.

    17. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    18. JR

That's a real issue. And Jonathan Haidt wrote a great book called The Coddling of the American Mind.

    19. ZU

      Great book.

    20. JR

      It's really good.

    21. ZU

      Great book, yeah.

    22. JR

And it goes into that in depth, and it really made me fucking super nervous for my kids, like, the ... growing up and developing during this time where we have this, you know, sort of uncharted territory of social media. There's not, like, a lot of documented history of use, so we can go back to 100 years of people using social media-

    23. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    24. JR

... and this is the way to do it healthily, and this is the way to ... You know, there's, there's people-

    25. ZU

      Yes.

    26. JR

... that are just fucking tweeting all day long.

    27. ZU

      Yeah. It's just an experiment.

    28. JR

All day lo- And then going crazy, pulling their fucking hair out, taking pills, barely, barely getting by in this life, and just tweeting-

    29. ZU

      Mm-hmm.

    30. JR

      ... all day long.
