EVERY SPOKEN WORD

  1. 0:0015:00

    (laughs) …

    1. BP

      (laughs)

    2. JR

Doo, doo, doo. (door closes) Hello, Bridget.

    3. BP

      Hello, Joe.

    4. JR

      What's happening?

    5. BP

      Nothing. I'm so excited.

    6. JR

We're here. We made it happen.

    7. BP

      We did!

    8. JR

We made it real. And, uh-

    9. BP

      Happy Sober October.

    10. JR

This is the first podcast ever where Marshall is in the room.

    11. BP

Oh, my gosh, I feel so honored.

    12. JR

He's... We are honored. This is a special one. He's just exhausted, and I knew he wanted to just lie down next to me.

    13. Stay here.

    14. BP

My dog always comes through the YouTube show, and we're always like, "Oh, she's gonna knock over the lights in the middle." But you see her come in and out in the edits. (laughs)

    15. JR

Well, when, uh, Red Band and I used to do the podcast back in the day, we used to do it in my office in my house when my kids were really little. So I'd hear, like, screaming-

    16. BP

      (laughs)

    17. JR

... and crying in the background, you know? "She took my toy!"

    18. BP

      (laughs)

    19. JR

      Something like that, you know?

    20. BP

      (coughs)

    21. JR

So, um, thanks for doing this.

    22. BP

Thank you. How's the, how's Sober October going?

    23. JR

      It's great. It's-

    24. BP

I wanna thank you for doing that.

    25. JR

      Why's that?

    26. BP

Because it creates a community, and it's super cool for people to just have that month of clarity. I just think it's really cool. I'm grateful. It's my sober birthday in October, so I-

    27. JR

For you, it's, like, how many years?

    28. BP

      Six years.

    29. JR

      That's a lot.

    30. BP

      No, that's i- that's insane. It's-

  2. 15:0030:00

    Buddy, come here. Come…

    1. BP

      restless.

    2. JR

Buddy, come here. Come here, pal. Come here.

    3. BP

He's so cute though, I can't bear to kick him out.

    4. JR

Wanna say hi to people? Come here. Come on, come on, come on, come on.

    5. BP

      (laughs)

    6. JR

Come on. Say hi to people. Aw.

    7. BP

      Hi.

    8. JR

That, ladies and gentlemen, is the sweetest dog in the world.

    9. BP

      Seriously.

    10. JR

People have been asking for him to be on the show forever. He's just gonna... He'll do the rounds. He'll go to you, "Hi, what are you doing in here?" He'll go to you, he'll get pet-

    11. BP

      I'm fine.

    12. JR

... and then he'll go to Jamie, he'll get pet. But the... I just don't want him to interrupt the conversation.

    13. BP

      No.

    14. JR

      He's a little bit of a distraction.

    15. BP

That's fine, I'm all over the place.

    16. JR

And I don't want him to yank any wires out either. Hey, he's going to Jamie now, told you.

    17. BP

      Doing the rounds.

    18. JR

(laughs) That's what he does. He-

    19. BP

      They're such, like, love sluts.

    20. JR

      Yeah.

    21. BP

      It's amazing.

    22. JR

      Goldens are love sponges.

    23. BP

So is my boxer. She'll go asleep from one bed to another to another. She gets all the love.

    24. JR

Well, he doesn't... He's not allowed to sleep in beds.

    25. BP

      Yeah, smart. (laughs)

    26. JR

But, uh, but he's, uh, he's very loved.

    27. BP

      Um-

    28. JR

It's just that I've never had a dog like that before. They're just so different than any other dog I've ever had, 'cause he's just, he's just a constant friendly lover.

    29. BP

      Mm-hmm.

    30. JR

You know, he never gets annoyed with you, he never wants to go lie down but he's always happy when you say hi to him.

  3. 30:0045:00

    Yeah.…

    1. JR

a cy... People get caught in cycles of- of- of, like, m- creating bullshit, and- and then they get in cycles of, like, festering. And you know Jamie Kilstein?

    2. BP

      Yeah.

    3. JR

... one of the things J-, you know, Jamie is a reformed super social-

    4. BP

      Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    5. JR

      ... justice warrior.

    6. BP

      Yeah.

    7. JR

But one of the things that Jamie told me was that, like, he would, like, say something about someone, like, "This guy's a Nazi and a piece of shit."

    8. BP

      (laughs) Yeah.

    9. JR

And he would say it on Twitter, and then he would be glued to his phone, looking at every response, you know-

    10. BP

      Yeah.

    11. JR

... every response that came in on Twitter. And he'd be reacting to it or freaking out or angry or-

    12. BP

There's a lot of people like this. (laughs)

    13. JR

... or getting love from it or getting, getting anxiety from i- And then people would turn on him, he'd be like, "No!"

    14. BP

      Yeah.

    15. JR

And then he would fucking "Fuck you!" and go back at him. And it was just like this thing where you're trapped in it. You're trapped in it all day.

    16. BP

Yeah, yeah. Faisal and I were talking about this, uh, that kid from Iraq who was on my podcast. And he was... I was like, "It's so weird in, you know, they, in all those, like, dystopian books, there was, like, this wreckage everywhere and then you plug in to get to a better place." And I feel like when I unplug, it's like a Disney movie.

    17. JR

      (laughs) Yeah.

    18. BP

      You know? (laughs) Like-

    19. JR

      Yes.

    20. BP

I'm like doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo.

    21. JR

      I don't-

    22. BP

And then I plug in and it's like chaos and war.

    23. JR

      I don't want a flip phone. I don't want a flip phone, but I get it.

    24. BP

      I want one.

    25. JR

      But I get it.

    26. BP

      I, I know. I know, I know.

    27. JR

I like taking pictures of things and I like having the option, but I've done much better over the last six months of being way more disciplined with my time.

    28. BP

      Yeah, yeah.

    29. JR

You know? Like, sometimes I'll have... I, I go, "Oh, I'll check my phone," and then I go, "Don't! Don't do it." So I'm, like, giving myself advice.

    30. BP

      That's-

  4. 45:001:00:00

    Of course, yeah. …

    1. BP

one of the kind of byproducts is that not only do you not trust people, but you don't trust yourself.

    2. JR

      Of course, yeah.

    3. BP

And I was like, "Oh, I didn't know this."

    4. JR

'Cause you put yourself, you put yourself in a bad situation, right? So you don't trust your own judgment.

    5. BP

And often, like, your reaction to it.

    6. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    7. BP

So, my reaction to what happened to me was very... I mean, yes, I was young and I can forgive myself for that, but it was to, I was, like, hypersexual after that, you know? I- I, and then I- I recently (laughs) last week had this moment where I was like, "Oh, God. All the, like, men that just didn't deserve me." And this is one of the-

    8. JR

      (laughs)

    9. BP

I mean, (laughs) I- it really was, like, I felt like I was re-virginized or something. I don't know what happened, but I suddenly was, like, "Wow, I- I- I don't..." I suddenly have self-worth. (laughs) It's like-

    10. JR

It redefines intimacy for you too, right?

    11. BP

Well, this is one of the, you know, where I'm squishy. I'm squishy on a lot of things and, um, I think feminism is really important and to, like, shit on it is... There are women who died and got jailed for, like, the right to vote, so that doesn't sit well with me. But the- some of the excesses of feminism and of the, in particular, um, like, sexual liberation, is that I was told sex is empowering and it's not fucking empowering if you're not empowered already. Like, f- in my experience-

    12. JR

You were told sex is empowering as a part of feminism, you said?

    13. BP

      It's kind of, well-

    14. JR

      Is that what you're saying?

    15. BP

It's kind of the messaging, is like, "Oh, women can have sex too and just, like, it's a, like, it's an empowering thing."

    16. JR

Well, is- isn't it more of an anti-shame thing? Because, like-

    17. BP

      Well, there's-

    18. JR

... women are shamed for their- their seduc- their- their feelings, their passion.

    19. BP

Yeah, and I think that's why I think the... I understand it. I understand why that would be the... But I feel like what got lost is that sex is very intimate and for years I was like, "Intimacy is so creepy." I just couldn't-

    20. JR

      (laughs)

    21. BP

      I couldn't (laughs) , I couldn't make e- like, eye contact? No.

    22. JR

      Right.

    23. BP

      No. We're not doing that.

    24. JR

      (laughs)

    25. BP

      That's not happening. And it's, I- I just-

    26. JR

      You gotta be like... (whistles)

    27. BP

Yeah. Like, get- get in the back. Um, we-

    28. JR

      Get in the back. (laughs)

    29. BP

(laughs) We- I just didn't have that, um, I- I don't know. I just, I- I missed the memo that it should be something... I- I was taught that it was, um, you know, like, to kind of withhold because then a man won't respect you, which feels a little bit transactional. So there was that messaging.

    30. JR

      Mm-hmm.

  5. 1:00:001:08:56

    (laughs) …

    1. BP

    2. JR

      (laughs)

    3. BP

... you guys sound exactly the same.

    4. JR

      Yes.

    5. BP

      You re- you should date.

    6. JR

      (laughs)

    7. BP

I figured out how to solve the problem.

    8. JR

Well, I always think it's hilarious when a right-wing person and a, and a Democrat date.

    9. BP

      Oh. (laughs)

    10. JR

      Th- this-

    11. BP

How do you make that work?

    12. JR

      I just, uh-

    13. BP

Maybe it's just, like, hate fucking.

    14. JR

      Yeah, hate fucking.

    15. BP

(laughs) You know? Like, you know, you-

    16. JR

"Fuck Nancy Pelosi." No, fuck me. (laughs)

    17. BP

      (laughs)

    18. JR

I'm sure, I'm sure. I mean, look, people are goddamn complicated.

    19. BP

      We are.

    20. JR

      Yeah.

    21. BP

      We're very complicated. It's, uh-

    22. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    23. BP

... that's what was so weird about working at Playboy, was I got there right when they went non-nude.

    24. JR

      Mm.

    25. BP

      And I was like-

    26. JR

      Oh, that's hilar- how long-

    27. BP

      Sorry, everyone. (laughs)

    28. JR

How long did that last? (laughs)

    29. BP

      Like, one minute.

    30. JR

      (laughs)
