Weed culture in California: smoke-free buildings, brunch blunts, and hotbox yoga

    1. JM

I'm not supposed to smoke in my building, so...

    2. JR

They don't let you smoke weed in your buil-

    3. JM

      Yeah.

    4. JR

What kind of fucking arcade building-

    5. JM

      Because it's, because it's legal.

    6. JR

      Oh.

    7. JM

      Yeah.

    8. JR

      That makes sense.

    9. JM

(laughs) We can't, we can't do things that are legal anymore.

    10. JR

But you can smoke cigarettes in your building, right?

    11. JM

      No. No, no, no.

    12. JR

      No?

    13. JM

      No.

    14. JR

Oh, you have a smoke-free building?

    15. JM

      Yeah.

    16. JR

      Health-conscious.

    17. JM

      Mm-hmm.

    18. JR

Ah. Well, I get that kind of if, if you say no cigarettes, you kinda have to say no weed, too.

    19. JM

      But cigarette smoke stays...

    20. JR

      Yeah.

    21. JM

Like, that gets in the walls and in the fabrics and all that stuff.

    22. JR

      Mm.

    23. JM

      Like, the weed just kinda...

    24. JR

      For us.

    25. JM

      Right.

    26. NA

      (laughs)

    27. JR

But I think other people that don't smoke weed, they smell it. They're like, "Ew."

    28. JM

Yeah, and those people need to get outta California.

    29. NA

      (laughs)

    30. JM

I mean, you s- you smell it everywhere you go now.

  2. 3:148:01

Coronavirus fears and China’s disinfectant drones: real footage or propaganda?

    1. JR

Dude, did you see that fucking video-

    2. JM

      Which one?

    3. JR

... of China where they're spraying disinfectant in the streets-

    4. JM

      No.

    5. JR

... to try to kill the coronavirus? Jamie, it's on my, uh... Is that bullshit?

    6. JM

But they do that shit in Arkansas.

    7. NA

      Some of them are, yeah.

    8. JR

      (clears throat)

    9. NA

Some of it's bullshit. Some of them are real, but some of them, I think, are not accurate videos of what they're saying it is.

    10. JR

      I don't know. I've s- I've, I've seen it on a couple different spots online.

    11. NA

I've seen it too. I've seen var- various ones. Some of them look a little more egregious.

    12. JR

      Let's, let's pretend we're, we're ignorant-

    13. NA

      Oh, right, right, right, right.

    14. JR

... and we don't know any better, but l- watch the video because it's fucking bonkers, man. They're, they're driving through the streets spraying everything at street level.

    15. NA

They were, the thing I saw going around before, which is you didn't s-... They were spraying with drones. They were using drones to actually do it.

    16. JR

      Oh.

    17. NA

They're, like, flying around people and like... (mimicking spraying)

    18. JM

Uh. Oh, I didn't see that. It begins...

    19. JR

      Oh my God.

    20. NA

      Yeah. Well, do-

    21. JM

But see, they do that in the south with mosquitoes.

    22. NA

      Right. Yes.

    23. JM

      So it's kinda like that.

    24. JR

Fucking terrible for YouTube, by the way.

    25. JM

      Oh, of course.

    26. JR

If you've breathed that shit in, if it kills mosquitoes, it'll kill you too.

    27. JM

      Absolutely.

    28. JR

That fucking stuff is awful, man.

    29. JM

All of our relatives were like, "Go play outside." We're like, "Is this safe?" And they're like, "Yeah." (laughs) It's just off.

    30. JR

Do you... You know, let a l- well, let me... Let's watch this real quick, but then-

  3. 8:018:45

Everyday hygiene panic: coughing on planes and selfish public behavior

    1. JM

I had it, um... I was on a, a plane couple of weeks ago flying from New Orleans back here, and I had this Viking woman behind me just open mouth coughing.

    2. JR

      Oh.

    3. JM

And I had... I, I was like, first of all, no.

    4. JR

      Yeah.

    5. JM

Second of all, I had to turn around and say, "Hey, can you please cover your mouth?" And I had to do that to an adult woman.

    6. JR

      Yeah.

    7. JM

And it made me feel weird.

    8. JR

Some people are just fucking selfish.

    9. JM

Just (choking sounds) on a plane.

    10. JR

Some people, th- they just don't care. They're just selfish.

    11. NA

      (clears throat)

    12. JM

      Yeah.

    13. JR

Yeah. They don't even care that other people feel uncomfortable. They're just like, "I have to cough."

    14. JM

Yeah, and you're gonna all experience it.

    15. JR

      Yeah.

    16. JM

      (laughs)

    17. JR

If some people, if they're sick, they want you to be sick. They don't... They're not happy.

    18. JM

      Malicious-

    19. JR

      Fucking assholes.

    20. JM

      ... and malignant.

    21. JR

      Assholes.

    22. JM

      Mm-hmm.

    23. JR

      I'm worried.

    24. JM

      (laughs) Don't be.

  4. 8:4511:58

Glyphosate (Roundup) and chemical exposure: lawsuits, regulators, and “just pull the weeds”

    1. JR

You know what I've been worried about a lot about lately is glyphosate.

    2. JM

      (laughs)

    3. JR

      I've been reading into glyphosate.

    4. JM

Same. What is that? (laughs) You can't just glyphosate me. What is that?

    5. JR

      It's Roundup. It's a, it's a chemical that they use for, um, a pesticide-

    6. JM

      Oh.

    7. JR

... for, for agriculture. And, uh, I was reading this whole thing about glyphosate and how toxic it is and how many people have gotten cancer from glyphosate and how often they use glyphosate on vegetables.

    8. JM

      Yeah.

    9. JR

      I'm like, "Motherfucker."

    10. JM

That's why you have to wash your vegetables.

    11. JR

      I don't think I need to wa-

    12. JM

Yeah, it does it. It's all in there anyways.

    13. JR

You know. Here it is. As many as 85,000 glyphosate cancer lawsuits significantly closer to settlement after federal trial suspended. Yeah, there's a lot of motherfuckers that got cancer from this shit.

    14. JM

That's the Roundup. That's the, uh-

    15. JR

      Yes, Roundup.

    16. JM

      ... weed, the weed-

    17. JR

      Exactly.

    18. JM

      ... thing, right?

    19. JR

      Mm-hmm. Yeah.

    20. JM

      Kills your weeds.

    21. JR

Um, I think it kills pesticides. It's, it's weed and... What does it say there? Scroll down. Scroll back up there. No, the, the actual image of the gly... Oh, God damn it. These pop-ups.

    22. JM

      (laughs)

    23. JR

What does it say? It says weed and grass killer. Okay, so it is... It's not a pesticide. It's just, it's just for weeds.

    24. JM

      Yeah.

    25. JR

But what... I bet, I bet it kills pests too.

    26. JM

      Oh, it kills everything.

    27. JR

But they're, um, they... Apparently, a lot of people that are gardeners and that are working on, um, um, uh, golf courses, golf courses apparently get it a lot because y- you know, they spray that shit everywhere-

    28. JM

      Yeah.

    29. JR

... because they want everything to just be grass.

    30. JM

But does it leave, like, a brown spot, or...

  5. 11:5814:41

LA runoff, the “fake” LA River, and recycled water: pollution in the system

    1. JR

There's a, another yoga guy that I know that teaches yoga and, uh, he didn't know that you're not supposed to swim in the ocean right after the rain.

    2. JM

      What? (laughs)

    3. JR

In Los Angeles, apparently, it's super dangerous-

    4. JM

      And polluted.

    5. JR

... to get in that ocean. Yeah, because all the runoff-

    6. JM

      Mm-hmm.

    7. JR

... because the way LA's system is, you know, the LA River and all that jazz-

    8. JM

      Well-

    9. JR

... which is sort of a fake river-

    10. JM

It's not even a river at all.

    11. JR

      But it's perfect for LA.

    12. JM

      (laughs) Makes sense.

    13. JR

Calling the LA River, the LA River. It is perfect when you look at it, like, "Oh, yeah, it's fake."It's perfect. (laughs)

    14. JM

      It's literally, it's just a concrete stream.

    15. JR

      Yeah.

    16. JM

      Yeah.

    17. JR

Uh, well, it's like a fucking gross drainage-

    18. JM

      Yeah.

    19. JR

      ... it's just enormous.

    20. JM

      Mm-hmm.

    21. JR

Well, when that bitch goes down into the ocean, it carries with it all the garbage, all the chemicals, oil from the streets, all that stuff.

    22. JM

      Needles.

    23. JR

      Needles.

    24. JM

      Yeah.

    25. JR

And it's all in the water. And so when you go surfing right after that, you get really fucking sick. And he was telling me he got deathly ill-

    26. JM

      (sighs)

    27. JR

... because he just didn't know any better. He was just out there and he's from Argentina-

    28. JM

      Mm-hmm.

    29. JR

... I guess, where it's not as much of an issue there. And he was in that water and he got fucked up. He said he was a, he was a wreck for like two weeks.

    30. JM

      Yeah, that'll knock you out.

  6. 14:4121:04

Prepping, survival food scams, and Jim Bakker’s infamous “bucket gruel”

    1. JR

People are just not supposed to live that stacked on top of each other like that.

    2. JM

      Ugh.

    3. JR

We're supposed to live in small villages-

    4. JM

      I know.

    5. JR

... in the woods with just enough food.

    6. JM

I'm down for that. I want a tiny home.

    7. JR

      Do you?

    8. JM

      Yeah.

    9. NA

You want one of them little mobile things that-

    10. JM

Yeah, a little tiny home in the woods.

    11. JR

      Really?

    12. JM

Uh, with a fire pit out front.

    13. JR

Could you survive in the woods?

    14. JM

      Probably not.

    15. JR

      (laughs)

    16. JM

But I have a lesbian friend.

    17. NA

      (laughs)

    18. JR

      (laughs)

    19. JM

      Yeah. Her name's Denise.

    20. JR

      (laughs) Lesbian friends are good.

    21. JM

      Yeah.

    22. JR

The ones with those, uh, Patagonia vests?

    23. JM

      Oh, yeah. Every carabiner.

    24. NA

      Yeah.

    25. JR

      Yeah. (laughs)

    26. JM

She, I mean, she, she's on survival mode 24/7.

    27. JR

      Carabiners.

    28. JM

She's got... We have earthquake drills every day. Yeah.

    29. JR

      Really?

    30. JM

      Not really. (laughs)

  7. 21:0428:46

Gay vs. lesbian communities, stereotypes, and conversion-therapy horror stories

    1. JR

Why is it that lesbians have never been able to form a proper neighborhood, but gay guys can do it in almost every town?

    2. JM

      Hmm. I feel-

    3. JR

      You know?

    4. JM

... like gay guys push the lesbians out.

    5. JR

      You think so?

    6. JM

But lesbians are smarter because they'll form their own tribe.

    7. JR

Yeah, but they never develop, like ... Like, Boystown is legendary, right? It's like-

    8. JM

      Mm-hmm.

    9. JR

      It's ... It is.

    10. JM

      Eh.

    11. JR

It's a gay ... Five blocks of gay.

    12. JM

      (laughs)

    13. JR

      Right?

    14. JM

      I call it home. (laughs)

    15. JR

(laughs) Well, that's, that's your spot.

    16. JM

      Yeah.

    17. JR

But if you think about it, there's no lesbian equivalent anywhere on Earth ... that I know of.

    18. JM

      Uh ...

    19. JR

Is there, like, a legitimate lesbian community where it's only lesbians, and they get together and do lesbian things, and wear cowboy hats and G-strings-

    20. JM

      Yeah.

    21. JR

      ... and shit?

    22. JM

Yeah. They have their own ... I mean, that's the thing. I feel like guys are more ... They wanna be in charge more, where lesbians can kinda just form their own little side neighborhoods. They don't need the credit. You know what I mean?

    23. JR

      D- but do they?

    24. JM

      No. I feel like-

    25. JR

But do- but people would know.

    26. JM

      There's a-

    27. JR

If they had a, like, a legit lesbian neighborhood, like Girls Town, people would know.

    28. JM

But would you wanna go to Girls Town?

    29. JR

      Oh yeah.

    30. JM

      Yeah? Why?

  8. 28:4638:15

Bible contradictions, ‘cloven hoof’ rules, and psychedelics behind religious visions

    1. JR

Why does he say in the Bible that a man should marry a woman then?

    2. JM

Where it's like... Uh... It's just-

    3. JR

I totally respect you on that.

    4. JM

Yeah, it's just sad. It's just like, I, I... In the Bible, it says this, and it's like, well, in the Bible it says... You can always counter... Go, go against what the Bible says from a different verse. It's like, it doesn't say to eat shrimp or pork or anything like that.

    5. JR

      Yeah.

    6. JM

But, you know, I'll see half these people at a Chili's buffet, you know, just going to town.

    7. JR

Yeah, eating a lot of shellfish.

    8. JM

      Mm-hmm.

    9. JR

You imagine if you got all the way up to heaven-

    10. JM

      No.

    11. JR

... and, uh, God was like, uh, "Look, I don't care about guys fucking guys."

    12. JM

      Mm-hmm.

    13. JR

"All that clams. You guys are assholes."

    14. JM

      (laughs)

    15. JR

"It says in the fucking Bible, 'Don't eat clams.' Why, why'd you eat clams? Did you read what I said?"

    16. JM

"It was Mardi Gras, I couldn't help myself."

    17. JR

"Why are you wearing two different kinds of cloth?"

    18. JM

      (laughs)

    19. JR

"You don't wear two different kinds of cloth."

    20. JM

      I know.

    21. JR

      That's in the fucking Bible.

    22. JM

And that's the gayest thing too. Like, if God... If I did my whole job on Earth and I got to heaven and, and God was like, "Girl..."

    23. JR

      (laughs)

    24. JM

"... two kinds of cloth?" I'm like, "Wait, what? No."

    25. JR

      (laughs)

    26. JM

      Back to hell you go.

    27. JR

      Wait!

    28. JM

      (laughs)

    29. JR

Well, also, the Bible clearly seen the hand of man.

    30. JM

      Mm-hmm.

  9. 38:1540:23

Mushroom decriminalization and microdosing: Silicon Valley, fighters, and mental health

    1. JR

That's next. That's next for decriminalization.

    2. JM

      Mushrooms?

    3. JR

Yeah. That's next. They're gonna make that happen. They're gonna make it happen. It's already decriminalized in Colorado.

    4. JM

      Right, right.

    5. JR

My friend Rashad Evans was here yesterday, he was talking about it. I think they're gonna pull that off in California as well.

    6. JM

      They have to.

    7. JR

      They... Just like-

    8. JM

      Because like-

    9. JR

Just even for microdosing. If we could just get everyone to microdose, the world would be so much better.

    10. JM

I feel like that's the new trend right now. I hear that all the time.

    11. JR

      Yes.

    12. JM

Everyone's just like, "I just microdose. I just microdose."

    13. JR

I've done it a bunch of times.

    14. JM

Someone I know, I know somebody who microdoses acid. I'm like, "Shit."

    15. JR

A lot of guys in Silicon Valley do.

    16. JM

      That's crazy.

    17. JR

Yeah. They think it, it keeps all their negative chatter at bay.

    18. JM

      (clears throat)

    19. JR

I had a buddy of mine who was just here the other day who microdoses. He says he takes it every three or four days.

    20. JM

      Acid?

    21. JR

That's his thing. No, no, no. Uh-

    22. JM

      Mushrooms?

    23. JR

      ... mushrooms.

    24. JM

      Like the little capsules?

    25. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    26. JM

      The little pills?

    27. JR

      Yeah, they grind it up.

    28. JM

      Uh-huh.

    29. JR

They grind up the mushrooms and he'll take one capsule every three or four days and it keeps... He said it just keeps negativity out of his head, keeps him positive-

    30. JM

      Wow.

  10. 40:2344:32

Weed laws across the US and the 2016 ‘end of the world’ election-night memories

    1. JR

And as it spreads across the country, the, the legality, I think it's legal, state legal, in, what, nine states?

    2. JM

      Something like that, yeah.

    3. JR

And then medically legal in, like, 18 or something?

    4. JM

      Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

    5. JR

      How many... Let's find out.

    6. JM

      Let's try.

    7. JR

      How many states?

    8. JM

      Let's try it.

    9. JR

      Jamie, let's try.

    10. JM

      Siri, Alexa.

    11. JR

I think it's, uh... I'm gonna say nine states legal-

    12. JM

      (laughs) I'm gonna go-

    13. JR

      ... 18 states medical.

    14. JM

      Okay.

    15. JR

Is that right, Jamie? Let's find out.

    16. JM

      I think f-

    17. JR

Look at that. Oh, shit. All those green?

    18. NA

      Yeah, the dark.

    19. JR

      The dark is legal-

    20. JM

The dark is legal, yeah. Nevada-

    21. JR

And all the other ones are what? Medical?

    22. JM

      Yeah.

    23. JR

      So everything's medical?

    24. JM

Well, Texas isn't. I know... I don't think Texas is.

    25. JR

      Oh, what is Texas? Get-

    26. NA

      Texas is still-

    27. JR

Get to Texas. Go to Texas.

    28. NA

      But the light green is-

    29. JR

      Texas. Texas. Get to Texas.

    30. NA

... you know, well, so the light green is nothing.

Democratic primary distrust: Mayor Pete, Bernie, billionaire backing, and the ‘rigged’ coin flip

    1. JR

They had this idea. Well, people have these ideas of what's good and what's not good, what's gonna happen and not gonna... Which brings me back to this Mayor Pete guy.

    2. JM

      Mm-hmm.

    3. JR

They, they came up with that guy because they said, "Look, here he is, he's a young, handsome guy. He's gay. He's a mayor. He speaks well."

    4. JM

He's served in the military, yeah.

    5. JR

I think he was a, he was a veteran, but- So like, this'll be the guy. But he's also backed by all these billionaires. Like it's a fucking... it's a shell game.

    6. JM

What do you mean? He's got a wine cave. Leave him alone. (laughs)

    7. JR

(laughs) He's got a wine cave? What does that mean?

    8. JM

Well, didn't... wasn't like, Elizabeth Warren said something, like he had this fundraiser at a wine cave? Like, yeah, it was all these like rich billionaires, and it was like a, a, a, a cave.

    9. JR

      Well-

    10. JM

What is it called? A wine cellar, but it happened to be a cave, somewhere out here in California.

    11. JR

They're just trying really hard to keep it from being Bernie. Really hard.

    12. JM

      Oh, yeah.

    13. JR

      They don't want Bernie Sanders.

    14. JM

      Yeah.

    15. JR

If he get, if he gets in there... Apparently, you know, he was an Independent for so long, and he doesn't wanna play ball, and he doesn't accept any money, doesn't ac- accept any money from any-

    16. JM

He's just like a cool grandpa.

    17. JR

      Yeah.

    18. JM

I think he's... I mean, shit, I, I love Bernie. You know why? 'Cause he... Like, you could say, "Oh, happy Martin Luther King Day." That's... But then you look at an old picture of him, and he's marching next to Martin Luther King-

    19. JR

      Yes. Right.

    20. JM

      ... for civil rights.

    21. JR

      Yeah.

    22. JM

That's amazing. You can't be like, "No." Like, where were you?

    23. JR

      Right.

    24. JM

You know? It's like, I, I just... I don't know. I, I have hope. I have hope for somebody just to-

    25. JR

I have hope for him socially.

    26. JM

      Yeah.

    27. JR

I like, I like what he stands for socially.

    28. JM

      But then you look at-

    29. JR

      I don't know if economically it's feasible.

    30. JM

      I-

Homelessness and mental illness in LA: personal stories and systemic failures

    1. JM

And on the way over here too, I was just looking at all these tents and it's just so fucking sad. It's so sad.

    2. JR

It's really sad and it keeps growing.

    3. JM

It keeps growing. I live in West Hollywood and I remember like a couple of years ago 'cause, you know, it went from downtown and then downtown pushes them all out so they keep going west, keep going west. Some go to the beach, some go to Santa Monica.

    4. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    5. JM

But now it's like I live in an area that, you know, six, seven years ago, it was, it was fine but now it's like even on the way to go get coffee this morning, I walk everywhere I go, it's like, I saw like three, three homeless people just outside just screaming at nothing. You know, they're in tattered clothes and they're dirty and they're, you know. I went... I used to work with a girl years ago, um, at a restaurant when I waited tables and she's now homeless and she's like out of her mind and I feel bad 'cause like-

    6. JR

Was she always out of her mind?

    7. JM

No. No. She, her, you know, her name was Lotus. You know, she did yoga and now-

    8. JR

      What happened?

    9. JM

      I don't know. I don't know.

    10. JR

Did you try to talk to her?

    11. JM

I did when... It was like I got to watch the progression of-

    12. JR

      The crazy?

    13. JM

      ... the illness. Yes.

    14. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    15. JM

So I would see her every now and then I was like, "Hey, what's going on?" 'Cause like back when the recession happened, you know, we were waiting tables so we bounced from job to job because one day we'd go to work and there'd be chains on the door 'cause they couldn't pay us. So we had this little kinda group that we would go apply together at different jobs. And then I started seeing her out on the street just walking around and I was like, "Hey, what's going on? Hope you're, hope you're doing well." Da, da, da, da. And she just kinda never let me know how she was really doing and then like a couple years would go by and I'd see her and I'm like, "Hmm, she looks a little out of it." And I would say hi to her and she wouldn't respond and then now it's full on like teeth are missing and-

    16. JR

      Oh, fuck.

    17. JM

... running down the street crying and it just breaks my heart 'cause it's like I don't know what to do and I don't know if she would be willing or, uh-

    18. JR

How tight were you with her? You got, you got her phone number? The whole deal.

    19. JM

      No. No. No. No. I don't, I mean, I don't even know if she has a phone. I can't-

    20. JR

Right. But did you at one point in time have her phone number?

    21. JM

      I think so. Yeah. Yeah.

    22. JR

      Yeah. Fuck.

    23. JM

And it's like, it's just that like inner guilt and you're just like-

    24. JR

      Yeah.

    25. JM

... "God, how did it get so bad?" She had an apartment, you know, I think her parents passed away and that might have like set her, you know, spiraling but, yeah, I remember just like doing a spot at the Laugh Factory one night and walking outside and you know how everyone... they just keep everyone outside like you do (laughs) and, and she just like barreled through everybody just screaming nonsense and like she had like teeth missing and-

    26. JR

      Oh.

    27. JM

It's just sad. It's just really, really sad. And then I'm at the gym working out and I'll see her like down there, you know, with her garbage and everything and, uh, yeah. She doesn't... Uh, it, it's just sad. It's, it's a lost cause.

    28. JR

So when you knew her, she didn't seem like she had any mental health issues?

    29. JM

      No.

    30. JR

      Really?

  13. 1:00:211:14:49

Comedy survival in LA: near-breaking points, The Comedy Store as a ‘home,’ and Mitzi Shore’s stamp

    1. JR

There are people, though, that you meet in this town, when you meet them early in their journey-

    2. JM

      Mm-hmm.

    3. JR

... and they still have hope. Like, "It's not worked out yet, but it's gonna. I'm gonna make it." And then you run into ... And comics, you see.

    4. JM

Yeah, oh, I mean, that's the thing I think I'm, it's so relatable in our field-

    5. JR

      Yeah.

    6. JM

      ... as well 'cause you-

    7. JR

      Yeah.

    8. JM

      ... you know those people.

    9. JR

Yeah, we do know those people.

    10. JM

I've al- I wanna say, I almost was one of those people.

    11. JR

      Were you?

    12. JM

      Oh, yeah.

    13. JR

      When?

    14. JM

      What time? I mean-

    15. JR

Give me a time where it w- like ...

    16. JM

      2002 and then 2005.

    17. JR

      Really?

    18. JM

And then two thous- Yeah, I mean, there were several-

    19. JR

Well, I didn't meet you until when? 2007-ish?

    20. JM

I wanna say, yeah, I think I met you at, um, the Icehouse when we were podcasting-

    21. JR

      Ah.

    22. JM

      ... out there.

    23. JR

      Ah, that's right.

    24. JM

Yeah, and then, and then when you came back to the store-

    25. JR

      That was like '14.

    26. JM

      Yeah.

    27. JR

      This was either '14, yeah.

    28. JM

Yeah, this is when I saw you again, and even then, it was like, you know, making it work, and I remember you looked at me, and you go, "You're the weirdest gay guy I've ever met." And I was like, "Fuck yeah." (laughs)

    29. JR

      Why did I say that?

    30. JM

      I don't know. (laughs)
