Coffee talk, Comedy Store training, and catching up
- JRJoe Rogan
... Jamie. Three, two, one. Boom, and we're live. What's up, Trevor? How are you, brother?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Damn good. How are you, man?
- JRJoe Rogan
I'm good, man. Uh, you're a coffee snob?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Uh, coffee addict.
- JRJoe Rogan
Ah. What's the difference? When do you become a snob, like when you go, "Ugh, I wanna drink at Starbucks"?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Hmm. Maybe when you can tell the difference between all the kinds of coffee.
- JRJoe Rogan
Can... Oh, yeah. Right. If you could tell, "Oh, this is an Ethiopian."
- TTTrevor Thompson
"This is this, this is that."
- JRJoe Rogan
I guess they're all Ethiopian, right?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Thanks, Joe.
- JRJoe Rogan
Originally. I learned that from Peter Giuliani. That his name? Giuliano or Giuliani? I had a real coffee expert on here once who dropped the science on me. Cheers, sir.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Cheers. (glasses clinking)
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, he dropped some coffee science on us. (slurping) Shout out to Black Rifle Coffee. Whoo.
- TTTrevor Thompson
That's hot.
- JRJoe Rogan
Um, yeah, it's good stuff. So what's up, man? How are... You went to the, you did the full comedy store-
- TTTrevor Thompson
I did.
- JRJoe Rogan
... gauntlet last night.
- TTTrevor Thompson
I figured like, "You know, there's a chance he's gonna be there. Let me look it up. Take my buddies." Yeah. It was fun.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, we're there all the time. That's, uh, like what I'm saying, it's like the gym, you know. That's where, that's where we train.
- TTTrevor Thompson
You know, and you can see it, and it's rad to see. It's fun to see that kinda training going on with that kinda creative art that you need other people to respond to.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, it's a weird art like that.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
You really can't do it in a vacuum.
- TTTrevor Thompson
No, I mean, then you're just talking to yourself. (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
Have y- how many c- have you been to comedy shows before?
- TTTrevor Thompson
A few. Um, actually I went to your show.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, that was in San Diego, right?
- TTTrevor Thompson
With, with Dode and Fromm and, yeah, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right, right, right, at, uh, Temecula, right?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- 1:57 – 6:05
Extortion 17 aftermath and the realities of war vs media
- JRJoe Rogan
You know, I was trying to think like all the different things that we talked about that we have to remember. Um, but one of 'em is, uh, shout out to our buddy, Andy, Andy Stump, who basically, uh... We were talking last night about one of the things that happened. Um, there was a, there was an event while you were serving where a helicopter was shot down.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
And then you were the repl- you were the replacement group?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah, so I was augmenting the group that ended up replacing the guys who passed away during Extortion 17.
- JRJoe Rogan
And that was a, a huge event, right?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Enormous. Huge loss to the special operations community as a whole.
- JRJoe Rogan
You know, I was listening to, uh, Andy's podcast with Cam Hanes that's out right now.
- TTTrevor Thompson
That's fire.
- JRJoe Rogan
Cleared Hot. And he was saying that, um, they were flying towards fires and, or, no, th- actually this was a different story, this was a different story. But he was saying that it got hit by, uh, an RPG at night, which is rare.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah. Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, apparently those things are not easy to aim.
- TTTrevor Thompson
No, they're... I mean, it, it's just a, it's a rocket-propelled grenade. It's, you know, shoulder-fired and you just point and aim. So the thing isn't that accurate.
- JRJoe Rogan
Hmm. So you, did, did they have a scope on them?
- TTTrevor Thompson
A rudimentary one, and depending on which one you're using, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
And so you're just kinda sort of just getting a sight picture through that?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah, like, "Kentucky wind it is." (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, okay. (laughs) And, um, so that was, uh, that was a thing that Andy could've been in that group?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Absolutely could've, which is very tough for guys that aren't there that could've been there, to know that that's a possibility with so many dudes that spent so much time together, like him with those guys.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, one of the things that we talked about last night was the difference in perception between what war is actually like versus what civilians think war is like-
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... and how much of that stuff is sort of polluted by media, by movies and television shows-
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... where they, they paint this picture of it.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
And then the only people that know what it's like are you, you guys. You're the only ones who know, the people that were actually there.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah, and it's... I think it's cool what you're doing and what guys like Jocko are doing where they're allowing guys to, to paint that picture for everybody to see how it really can be from everybody's individual perspective, 'cause all of us get a different sliver of what's going on. You know, we all see a slightly different reality when we're there.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Each person's different. But I think it's important that everybody gets to relate that to the US, especially because of how long this has been going on, you know? It's been 20 years of sustained fighting for a small amount of Americans, and-
- JRJoe Rogan
That's really insane if you stop and think about it, 'cause remember when we used to think about World War II or Vietnam, like, Vietnam dragged on forever. It was nothing compared to this.
- TTTrevor Thompson
It wasn't 20 years.
- 6:05 – 11:20
Trauma, memory, and war films that get close
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, um, I'm friends with Marcus Luttrell and, uh, he's gonna come on and talk soon. And, um, that's gotta be the weirdest one. You're watching Marky Mark play you in a movie-
- TTTrevor Thompson
(laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
... you know. And n- no disrespect, I think Mark Wahlberg is a great actor.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
He's a, he's a beast. He's a, he's a pretty inspirational dude. I mean, uh, I like Mark Wahlberg a lot. But to see that guy from Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, like you've seen him.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah, like, "Bro-"
- JRJoe Rogan
You've seen, yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
"... I've seen you in whitey-tighties. What's going on here?" (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
I've seen you in the Calvin Klein's ads and now you're playing me. Like that has got, for Marcus-
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yes.
- JRJoe Rogan
... that's gotta be so weird.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Super weird.
- JRJoe Rogan
Just like some guy. And probably saying a bunch of shit he never really said.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Oh, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
And the other guy is what? Bradley Cooper was his buddy in the movie? Who was the other guy?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Oh, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Wasn't it?
- TTTrevor Thompson
And, uh... That's right.
- JRJoe Rogan
That's gotta be so bizarre.
- TTTrevor Thompson
I totally... Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
So bizarre. This horrific event in your life that probably... I mean, I don't wanna speak for Marcus, but it's gotta still be in his head every day.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Absolutely.
- JRJoe Rogan
All day long.
- TTTrevor Thompson
That stuff doesn't go away.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
You know, you, w- we, we all individually think, "Oh, yeah, you know, m- maybe it does kinda fade." But that's only 'cause you're not the one who lived it.
- JRJoe Rogan
Exactly.
- TTTrevor Thompson
With everything.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, with everything. With everything. Yeah, we're very insensitive to the way other people feel about traumatic events or, or ch- chaos, or things that we can't understand.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah, it's part of who you are.
- 11:20 – 18:11
From art school to Navy SEAL: Trevor’s origin story
- JRJoe Rogan
What was your insi- what's really crazy is you're a fucking super talented artist. Let's show these people this. Trevor made this. This is, uh, he says, "Red Cloud Sun."
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah, Jack Red Cloud.
- JRJoe Rogan
Can you see that? Can people see that? It's fucking great, man. You're really talented.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Thanks, man.
- JRJoe Rogan
So you went to school for art?
- TTTrevor Thompson
I did. So I went to the Chicago Art Institute for a year, uh, before I joined the Navy. And my entire family has a lot of art background. My mom studied at college. My dad does bronzes and, uh, he actually does a sports cartoon for the, uh, LA Times.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, whoa.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah. So it's been something I've seen growing up. And I was playing music a lot and doing art, and picked art 'cause that was what I was most passionate about. That was, what, 2006, and about three months into college, I'm like, "Fuck this place."
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- TTTrevor Thompson
"I want no part of this."
- JRJoe Rogan
What was it?
- TTTrevor Thompson
I just didn't feel like I was doing anything with, with, with so much shit going on in '06.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, okay.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Um, and like, both my granddad served and great-granddad served, and we've had a lot of military history. So I think that subconsciously, I felt a little bit of an impetus to do that.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Like, "Hey, y- maybe I should just give it a go, and if I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna do the hardest thing I can figure out." Thought about it, I'm like, "Yeah, Mom and Dad, so I'm dropping out of school. I'm gonna go be a Navy SEAL." And (laughs) I can only imagine the other side of that phone, like, "What the fuck is going on?"
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- TTTrevor Thompson
"How high is he? What is happening over there?"
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs) So you made a phone call from college?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Oh, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Wow, where were you going to school?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Chicago Art Institute.
- JRJoe Rogan
And your family lives in?
- TTTrevor Thompson
LA.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, Jesus.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah, in Westlake.
- JRJoe Rogan
Wow.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- 18:11 – 29:43
First deployments: SDV ‘wet subs’ and deep-water mind games
- JRJoe Rogan
What was your first deployment like?
- TTTrevor Thompson
So my first one was with, uh, a team out in Hawaii where we were doing submersible work, so I drove like a 22-foot mini sub for (laughs) five years.
- JRJoe Rogan
Really?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Oh, yeah. And, uh, we were doing some, like, waterborne activities and then-
- JRJoe Rogan
How deep does it go?
- TTTrevor Thompson
That's classified.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, really?
- TTTrevor Thompson
But yeah. Uh, it- it can go-
- JRJoe Rogan
Deep as fuck?
- TTTrevor Thompson
... it can go really deep. Yeah. But it's a, it's a wet submarine, so-
- JRJoe Rogan
Was it-
- TTTrevor Thompson
... we're on, we're on scuba. It's all, like, you're, you're in the water, not just underwater.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, really?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
So you're wearing scuba gear while you're piloting this thing?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yep.
- JRJoe Rogan
So water gets in there?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yep.
- JRJoe Rogan
Whoa.
- TTTrevor Thompson
It's like a... Y- y- you can probably pull up a picture of it.
- JRJoe Rogan
Bro, that's a mind fuck atop of a mind fuck.
- TTTrevor Thompson
SDV.
- JRJoe Rogan
Just being in a scuba is crazy, but being in a scuba gear inside of a fucking submarine.
- TTTrevor Thompson
With the door shut.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, Jesus Christ.
- TTTrevor Thompson
(laughs) So-
- JRJoe Rogan
How much air you got in there?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Enough. (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs) That's what it looks like?
- TTTrevor Thompson
There she is.
- 29:43 – 31:15
Captivity ethics, sanctuaries, and what we do to animals
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, this, um, the, the fact that we're still here in 2020 and they have SeaWorld where they make those fucking things do tricks for fish-
- TTTrevor Thompson
Oh, man.
- JRJoe Rogan
And that shit is dark.
- TTTrevor Thompson
It's super dark.
- JRJoe Rogan
It's dark. That might as well be slavery.
- TTTrevor Thompson
I-
- JRJoe Rogan
It's like a different animal. I mean, a different kind of human or-
- TTTrevor Thompson
I feel so bad.
- JRJoe Rogan
... a different kind of, uh, intelligent creature that you're-
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... keeping in a fucking swimming pool.
- TTTrevor Thompson
I, I feel so bad for all of them in not just, like, not just the aquariums, but, like, zoos too. It kills me.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Like, you go somewhere and-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
... like, "Oh, there's a polar bear. That's really cool. They painted the whole-"... place like it's snow.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, meanwhile it's fucking 80 degrees outside in Santa Rosa.
- TTTrevor Thompson
65 degrees out, yeah. It's like, come on.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Now, I understand they're doing a lot of good work in the back end, but-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
... do we really need to put them on display, like-
- JRJoe Rogan
I know, it's weird.
- TTTrevor Thompson
... like a, a gift shop?
- JRJoe Rogan
I went to this, uh, Wolf Connection recently, um, which is a, like a wolf sanctuary out near, uh, Palmdale and, um, these people are doing great work. They're really nice people. They're taking care of these wolves and, uh, it's mostly Black people get wolves and try to keep them as pets and they realize they can't.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
They can't control them at all.
- TTTrevor Thompson
The like quarter wolf or eighth wolf type of animal?
- JRJoe Rogan
Some of them, but most of them are like seven-eighths wolf.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Okay.
- 31:15 – 37:23
Spay/neuter debate and Joe’s feral cat war stories
- JRJoe Rogan
And they castrate them.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Oh, God.
- JRJoe Rogan
They fix them because they don't want them making babies.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Isn't it, isn't it weird how we kind of whitewash that statement? Yeah, it's, it's a fixed animal.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Fi- You-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. Is he neutered?
- TTTrevor Thompson
You, you fucked it up.
- JRJoe Rogan
No, you cut his balls off.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Just say it. Say what you did. And everybody does that. And it's a, it's a weird thing, man. Like I went to a vet once with, uh, my old dog, Johnny Cash. And when I brought him in, uh, the, the vet goes... She, she touches his balls. She goes, "Why does he still have these?" I go, "Because the- they make testosterone and that's what keeps him healthy." Like, "What are you talking about?"
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah. He was born with those.
- JRJoe Rogan
I'm not gonna let him-
- TTTrevor Thompson
They're there for a reason.
- JRJoe Rogan
I'm not gonna let him fuck dogs in heat and make babies. He's with me all the time.
- TTTrevor Thompson
(laughs) Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs) You know?
- TTTrevor Thompson
He's not gonna disappear.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, it's not like he's gonna fucking get out and make a bunch of babies. Like this is a well-cared-for dog in a nice yard. Like he's good, trust me.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
He doesn't have to get his balls chopped off. And my vet, um, that... I, I had a vet who was a, a good friend who wound up dying in a drunk driving acc- some fucking asshole slammed into him.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Oh, God.
- JRJoe Rogan
But he told me, he goes, "It's not necessary." He goes, "And it does affect the dog's energy level. It does affect the dog's hormonal growth." Like whether... If you do it when a dog's really young, they never grow to full maturity. They sort of stay like a puppy for a long time.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
And I had a dog like that, that we got, um... It was, um, a rescue dog. Well, it actually wasn't a rescue dog. We got him from a pet store and he had been castrated really young. Uh-
- TTTrevor Thompson
Pet store, so you did rescue him.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yes, I guess I did. Yeah. It wasn't my idea. My wife got him. But he was a bitch. He was just... Hated every other dog. Hated... You know, he'd growl at you.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
He'd growl at kids and he just was always insecure because, like, he never grew up with testosterone. Like when he was little, he was clipped.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Never gets a boner.
- 37:23 – 40:15
Predators, conservation, and eating the ‘unpopular’ animals
- JRJoe Rogan
Have you ever encountered a mountain lion? Didn't we talk about those?
- TTTrevor Thompson
We did.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
We did talk about it. So I saw one when I was young.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, that video's one of my favorite videos. Play that again, Jamie.
- JVJamie Vernon
About every seven seconds.
- JRJoe Rogan
This video is this fucking deer going to a, a drinking... Like, "I'll just have a little drink of water here."
- TTTrevor Thompson
It's nighttime.
- JRJoe Rogan
And then look at the eyes behind him.
- TTTrevor Thompson
"I'm safe." Oh.
- JRJoe Rogan
Here comes the eyes. That's a wrap, son.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Boom.
- JRJoe Rogan
Boom. Like a fucking super athlete.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Dude, mouth first-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
... into the throat.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
"I got you, bitch."
- JRJoe Rogan
And then the claws just grab ahold so they can get a, a good clamp down on the throat.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Dude, big cats are scary.
- JRJoe Rogan
Dude, there's a p- well, uh, that's what I was telling you. Tejon Ranch, they have a, um, a camera trap over a water hole. And in that one pond, they found 16 different cats. (laughs)
- TTTrevor Thompson
Full of-
- JRJoe Rogan
16 different big-ass-
- TTTrevor Thompson
Full of poundage.
- JRJoe Rogan
... predatory cats. Yeah, they're everywhere up there.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Eating a deer a day, or whatever they do.
- JRJoe Rogan
Y- uh, yeah, probably one a week, for sure.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Oh, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
You know? That's why California-
- TTTrevor Thompson
(laughs)
- 40:15 – 47:14
Archery crash course: zero experience to bear camp success
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, they're good. Yeah. Yeah, it's, uh... And y- that was your first hunt, right? With Dudley?
- TTTrevor Thompson
It was, yeah. Um, that was a hilarious phone call.
- JRJoe Rogan
Well, you had only been doing archery for how long?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Uh, zero.
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- TTTrevor Thompson
I had been doing archery for a grand total of no time.
- JRJoe Rogan
Really?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Oh, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
So you learned on the fly.
- TTTrevor Thompson
So, um, Andy gives me a ring. And he's like, "Hey, man, somebody dropped outta this hunt. Do you wanna go?" I'm like, "Yeah. No questions asked, okay." And he goes, "All right, here's some shit you gotta do."
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- TTTrevor Thompson
He's like, "You have to book a ticket to Kansas."
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- TTTrevor Thompson
I'm like, "When?" He goes, "Next Wednesday." (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
Whoa.
- TTTrevor Thompson
So essentially, I, like... I think it was, like, a week or two. I flew out to meet Dud and Andy and, uh, Chad Mendes was out there.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, cool.
- TTTrevor Thompson
And they were doing a, a turkey hunt. And I was just there to, like, watch and observe and learn how to shoot the bow from Dud.
- JRJoe Rogan
So you flew out-
- TTTrevor Thompson
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
... never shot a bow before.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Never touched one.
- JRJoe Rogan
Never touched a bow before.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Never touched one.
- JRJoe Rogan
You fly out. John motherfucking Dudley-
- TTTrevor Thompson
The Yoda.
- JRJoe Rogan
... is coaching you-
- TTTrevor Thompson
Oh, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... in Kansas.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yup, in a barn.
- 47:14 – 1:20:50
Diet, performance, stress resilience, and veteran reintegration
- JRJoe Rogan
You went carnivore for a while, right? You did that carnivore diet thing?
- TTTrevor Thompson
About two years ago.
- JRJoe Rogan
How long did you do it for?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Um...
- JRJoe Rogan
So you were an early adopter?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Almost nine weeks.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
When did you... W- What, what made you bail out of it? Variety?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Uh, not really variety. So I started doing some, what, what is essentially middle-ish longer distances, like marathon length.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- TTTrevor Thompson
And, uh, I was starting to come back into doing strength stuff, like a lot of deadlifting and some power activities.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- TTTrevor Thompson
And I just really... I wasn't feeling all there. Like, I felt like I could get almost to fifth gear-
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- TTTrevor Thompson
... but it just wasn't in it.
- JRJoe Rogan
(clicks tongue) Right. Like you needed carbs?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Like a little. And I'm talking, like-
- JRJoe Rogan
Apples or something?
- TTTrevor Thompson
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TTTrevor Thompson
So I essentially started putting a little bit of carbs in, and I still only eat, like, maybe 100 grams of carbs a day.
- JRJoe Rogan
Hmm.
- TTTrevor Thompson
Which is on the bottom end of very little.
- JRJoe Rogan
And what kind of carbs are you taking in-
- TTTrevor Thompson
Uh-
- JRJoe Rogan
... for the most part?
- TTTrevor Thompson
So when I'm at home eating how I wanna eat, it's mostly white rice.
