Back from a recording hiccup: Bud Light debates and living with Doug Stanhope

    1. NA

(drumming music) Joe Rogan podcast, check it out.

    2. The Joe Rogan Experience.

    3. JR

Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day. (rock music plays) All right, we're back after a brief hiatus. We had a little fuck-up here.

    4. SG

      Yeah.

    5. JR

      But we're back. Cheers again.

    6. SG

      Yeah, cheers.

    7. JR

So we were saying that, uh, I was saying that this is Stanhope's move, drinking Bud Light, and you were saying that you like drinking Bud Light because, uh, you could drink more. And then I said Stanhope switched to cocktails. This, all this happened, we had a fuck-up-

    8. SG

      Yeah.

    9. JR

... with the recording. But you said you lived with Stanhope.

    10. SG

      I did.

    11. JR

      At the fucking Neverland Ranch?

    12. SG

      Yes. It was crazy.

    13. JR

Yeah, what's he doing out there?

    14. SG

      Uh, what do you think?

    15. JR

      Yeah. (laughs)

    16. SG

      (laughs) Just guess.

    17. JR

      Just being bombed and having-

    18. SG

      He's nuts.

    19. JR

... random strangers show up at his house?

    20. SG

Yeah. He doesn't care. I mean, he's, he's still, he's so funny, but yeah, every once in a while, he'd get, he'd get a little nasty.

    21. JR

      Yeah?

    22. SG

      He'd turn on me.

    23. JR

      He'd turn on you?

    24. SG

Yeah, I'd say every, because we, I mean, it was, it was like a month and I, I can drink, but I can't-

    25. JR

So, you lived with him for a whole month?

    26. SG

Yeah, I lived, I stayed in the guest house.

  2. 1:023:36

Bisbee, Arizona as an artsy mining-town refuge

    1. JR

What is that place like, that Bisbee, Arizona?

    2. SG

      It's a cool town.

    3. JR

      Yeah?

    4. SG

It's really cool, yeah. Yeah, I don't know. It's like an old mining town, so every house is like an old mine shack. It's crazy.

    5. JR

And most of the people there, what do they do?

    6. SG

Uh, I think when the mines closed, because it was an old copper mine, uh, they all, like hippies from California moved in there, so it's like a real artsy, artsy town.

    7. JR

Is he like the mayor of the town?

    8. SG

      Yeah, pretty much.

    9. JR

      Yeah.

    10. SG

Although I think all he does is... I could be wrong. Maybe his routine changed during COVID. I, in fact, I know it did. Uh, but they...

    11. JR

      Look at your nose.

    12. SG

(laughs) Yeah, that was it. Uh, he would just go to the grocery store and come back. That was his...

    13. JR

      That's it?

    14. SG

      That was it.

    15. JR

      That's it?

    16. SG

      That's it.

    17. JR

Just make sure he's got enough money in the bank?

    18. SG

Yeah, talk shit, do podcasts, yeah.

    19. JR

      Wow.

    20. SG

Yeah. Yeah. It was fun. But yeah, like I said, every once in a while, he'd get a couple drinks and be like, "Look at you."

    21. JR

      (laughs)

    22. SG

(laughs) Like, we'd be hanging out and out of nowhere he'd be like, "You're fat." I'd be like, "All right man, what the fuck, dude?"

    23. JR

      Oh my God. (laughs)

    24. SG

      (laughs)

    25. JR

      That's the hard booze.

    26. SG

      Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    27. JR

      That's hard booze thinking.

    28. SG

      (laughs)

    29. JR

People that just drink, like, Bud Lights, they probably don't get that nasty.

    30. SG

      No.

  3. 3:365:06

Comedians ‘talking shit’ vs virtue-signaling inside comedy spaces

    1. SG

Definitely. And at the Cellar now, it's like we're all having, like, conversations about, like, race and shit like that, and it's like-

    2. JR

      And you might get hammered?

    3. SG

I might get hammered and be like, "Would you guys shut up?"

    4. JR

      (laughs)

    5. SG

(laughs) Just wake up the next day like, "Oh, fuck."

    6. JR

Uh, there is nothing worse than comedi- comedians that are virtue signaling.

    7. SG

      Mm-hmm.

    8. JR

Like around other comedians and trying to establish, like, a way that we should all communicate. And you're like...

    9. SG

      Yeah.

    10. JR

What the fuck are you saying?

    11. SG

Yeah, it's like, "Why, what are you doing here?"

    12. JR

Are you pretending this is real?

    13. SG

      Yeah.

    14. JR

Are you pretending this is real?

    15. SG

No, we were all in on this.

    16. JR

      We're all-

    17. SG

      (laughs)

    18. JR

Yeah, we're all in on this. We're all-

    19. SG

      Yeah.

    20. JR

We're all good people talking mad shit.

    21. SG

      Yeah.

    22. JR

There's no bad people here. Just because someone says something ridiculous to make other people laugh, like, yeah, that's what they're doing.

    23. SG

      Yeah.

    24. JR

      We know the game.

    25. SG

      Yeah.

    26. JR

It's sh- it's like, it, it, it's... They're opportunists. They're opportunists. They've, they find a little, a way to, to claim the moral high ground to be upset at everybody else. But if you're a comedian and you do that, you're a traitor. You know what's going on. You know that these guys are just talking shit. And talking shit is a real thing.

    27. SG

      Yeah.

    28. JR

It's a thing. It's like, here's my real statement, here's how I really feel about things, here's honesty, here's me, uh, you know, just being vulnerable and truthful, and then here's me talking shit.

    29. SG

      Yeah. It's shit.

    30. JR

      And what I'm talking...

  4. 5:067:07

Ancient all-day drinking, psychedelics, and why modern life feels easy

    1. JR

It might grow on me. It's not bad. I get the, the idea though. You know, that's... One of the things that I've been reading about, um, lately, I, I'm actually rereading this book by Brian Muraresku on, um, it's called, uh, The Immortality Key. It's all about ancient Greece and how they used to take wine and they had wine laced with all these psychedelic chemicals and that's, you know, the whole Eleusinian Mysteries.

    2. SG

      Yeah.

    3. JR

Um, but back then everybody used to drink all day. They all had like a s... The alcohol was terrible. Like the wine had like 3% alcohol. The booze had like 3%, like beer was 3%. The one, they didn't know how to make like strong shit-

    4. SG

      Yeah.

    5. JR

... like they know how to make today. And everybody was drunk all the time.

    6. SG

Yeah, what else are you gonna do?

    7. JR

      Yeah.

    8. SG

Sitting around waiting to get fucking killed by barbarians?

    9. JR

      (laughs)

    10. SG

      You better get hammered.

    11. JR

And the barbarians are on mushrooms.

    12. SG

Yeah, they're c... (laughs) Yeah, they were.

    13. JR

Yeah. That was the thing. Like the Vikings, they were, they were all on mushrooms.

    14. SG

      Were they?

    15. JR

Yeah, they would do mushrooms and go berserking.

    16. SG

Yeah, they would do some bad things. I can't imagine doing those things on mushrooms.

    17. JR

... yeah, but if you lived back then, you could.

    18. SG

      True.

    19. JR

If, like, that was a normal part of everyday life, was cutting people apart, you'd probably wanna be into mushrooms.

    20. SG

Yeah, I guess I'd, I'd take mushrooms and giggle.

    21. JR

      Yeah, probably.

    22. SG

You guys would take it and...

    23. JR

      But they might've giggled too.

    24. SG

      I bet they were giggling.

    25. JR

      Yeah, I would imagine.

    26. SG

      (laughs)

    27. JR

We're lucky. But that's why people complain today, you know? It's like, the... 'cause it's pretty easy. So the things that people complain about, it... they're relatively mild in comparison to the historical record-

    28. SG

      Yeah.

    29. JR

... of how fucked up life was.

    30. SG

      Yeah. Yeah, it was terrible.

  5. 7:0711:37

Shane’s ‘drip’ outfit, Ari Shaffir’s chaos, and the freedom-to-wander mindset

    1. SG

I was with Ari at the house and I was like, "I look like a dickhead, right?" He was like, "No, you look fine."

    2. JR

      (laughs)

    3. SG

I knew that he was lying to me, dude.

    4. JR

Is Ari staying at Tim's too?

    5. SG

      Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    6. JR

      Oh, no.

    7. SG

      It's just me and Ari.

    8. JR

      Oh my God.

    9. SG

It's just me and that fucking guy.

    10. JR

      (laughs)

    11. SG

      Took his dick out already.

    12. JR

      Of course he did.

    13. SG

(laughs) Which is fine. Taking your dick out with other people around is funny.

    14. JR

But just with one dude. (laughs)

    15. SG

But it's just me and him, and I was like, "Dude, who's this joke for, bro? It's just you and me."

    16. NA

      (clapping)

    17. SG

It was great. 'Cause we were-

    18. JR

Plus, I guarantee you Tim's got cameras everywhere.

    19. SG

      Oh, definitely.

    20. JR

      Recording everything.

    21. SG

      He's probably watching like, "Yes."

    22. JR

      (laughs)

    23. SG

"Take it out." Oh, it's great.

    24. JR

      "Let's go. Let's go."

    25. SG

So we were out, me and Ari were swimming, and I was like, "I bet you I can swim underwater the length of the pool." And he was like, "I bet you can't." So I did it, and then when I got... I was like out of breath, got to the other side, I was like, "Puh," came out and his dick was out.

    26. JR

      (laughs)

    27. SG

He was standing outside of the pool. I was like, "Goddamn it."

    28. NA

      (laughs)

    29. SG

      I was, like, tired. (laughs)

    30. JR

      (sighs) He's a, he's a wild motherfucker.

  6. 11:3712:32

Living for standup: New York routine, Austin hangs, and comedy-community logistics

    1. JR

Couple more of these. So, are you still living in New York?

    2. SG

      I am.

    3. JR

      You liking it out there?

    4. SG

I mean, eh, the only thing I like is doing standup, so yes.

    5. JR

      Yeah.

    6. SG

That's the only thing I do.

    7. JR

      Yeah.

    8. SG

I just hang out, Uber to the club.

    9. JR

You had some funny shit last night, man.

    10. SG

Go back home. Oh, thank you very much.

    11. JR

It was a lot of fun.

    12. SG

      Thank you.

    13. JR

These two nights have been really fun.

    14. SG

Yeah, they've been awesome, man. You too.

    15. JR

      It's good.

    16. SG

I've been... It's good. You're still out there swinging like that?

    17. JR

      Yeah, you gotta swing.

    18. SG

      Bro.

    19. JR

      (laughs)

    20. SG

I was standing in the back with Ari and you started going, and I was looking at him like, "Ooh, (laughs) Joe's gonna get in trouble." (laughs)

    21. JR

      Yeah, you get in trouble.

    22. SG

      Yeah, of course.

    23. JR

Yeah, I mean, some people are gonna get mad, but it's comedy, you know?

    24. SG

      Yeah.

    25. JR

The people that aren't mad are having a great time. I mean, y-... we saw, we just did-

    26. SG

      Yeah.

    27. JR

... two nights in a row. Everybody's having a great time. And these shows at Vulcan that we've been doing on, uh, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, they sell out, like, instantly.

    28. SG

      Yeah.

    29. JR

      And it's fun.

    30. SG

      It's awesome there.

  7. 12:3219:24

City disorder, crime waves, and why ‘danger’ feels exciting on some level

    1. SG

Austin is. Austin's, Austin's cool. Uh, the area around there, I don't, I don't like it.

    2. JR

      It's a little sketchy.

    3. SG

      A lot of homeless people.

    4. JR

Yeah. Well, it's, uh, it's not well regulated.

    5. SG

      No.

    6. JR

And, uh, these knuckleheads decided to defund the police, which was a super unwise move. And it, it gets, it's, it gets weird down there.

    7. SG

Yeah. It's like Bonnaroo out there, dude. Everyone's just intense and on drugs.

    8. JR

Yeah. It's, uh... But you know what? Relatively speaking, it's exciting.

    9. SG

      Yeah. (laughs) You're excited?

    10. JR

      Yeah, yeah.

    11. SG

You got a fucking driver and a bodyguard, dude.

    12. JR

      (laughs)

    13. SG

And you do karate. Yeah, it's fun.

    14. JR

      (laughs)

    15. SG

I'm walking around just like, "Dude, I'm gonna get fucked up here."

    16. JR

Don't walk around. You're supposed to-

    17. SG

Oh, yeah. You gotta walk around.

    18. JR

You, you get from the parking lot into the structure-

    19. SG

      Yeah.

    20. JR

... and then from the structure to the parking lot, and then we vacate the area. That's what you do.

    21. SG

That's (laughs) what you want it?

    22. JR

Yeah. You secure the perimeter of the area-

    23. SG

      Yeah.

    24. JR

... with security, and you have-

    25. SG

      Yeah, I like doing-

    26. JR

      ... a lot of st-

    27. SG

      ... comedy in fucking Fallujah.

    28. JR

      (laughs)

    29. SG

      (laughs)

    30. JR

      (laughs)

From house-party riots to arranged school brawls: mob mentality in real life

    1. JR

Have you ever been at a party where a full melee brawl breaks out?

    2. SG

Like, a bunch of... Yeah, yeah, in college.

    3. JR

I was in one in, uh, just when I graduated high school. There was a kid who was, uh, I think it wa- he was from Iran and his family had a lot of money and they had a mansion in Beacon Hill.

    4. SG

      Mm-hmm.

    5. JR

I think it was in Beacon Hill. I'm trying to remember. Uh, nah, I don't know. But it was somewhere in the Newton, Massachusetts area where they have like, a lot of money and, uh, this kid just invited everybody over to his house. So, all these people that he didn't know.

    6. SG

      Yeah.

    7. JR

Hundreds of kids were at this guy's party and, uh, this girl, I still to this day can't remember what she did. She either threw a drink in the guy's face or she hit him.

    8. SG

      Nice.

    9. JR

I can't remember what happened, but I was there when the first spark started the fire. I was, I, I remember exactly where I was. There was like a, a stair- s- staircase and there was like, this banister, and I was watching it from here and I saw... I don't remem- I think she threw a drink at him, and this dude just fucking uncorks a picture perfect right hand in her face.

    10. SG

      A lady?

    11. JR

      Bam!

    12. SG

      (laughs)

    13. JR

Punched her, her head snaps back, she goes out, she falls back and then madness.

    14. SG

      Yeah.

    15. JR

And then madness and then there's fucking people jumping on people and smashing things and throwing people over stairs and-

    16. SG

      Yeah.

    17. JR

... and I'm like, fucking ducking and I make my way out, there's piles of people fi- I'm looking for my friends. It was wild.

    18. SG

Yeah, it wa- well, it was pre-Twitter, that's how they handled things.

    19. JR

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. It was way pre. This was like, the '80s. It was wild.

    20. SG

      Yeah.

    21. JR

I'll never forget it. It was just like, all of a sudden you could feel it in the air, like people were just looking to punch people. It's like something happens to people-

    22. SG

      Yeah, madness.

    23. JR

... when, yeah, when there's like a mob mentality thing. Like people were just looking to punch people, like you could tell. People didn't even know any- anybody. They were just looking at you like, "Maybe I'll punch you." Like, "Hey-"

    24. SG

      Yeah.

    25. JR

"... trying to get outta here."

    26. SG

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's like, "Whose side are you on?"

    27. JR

Yeah, "No sides. Mm, get me the fuck outta here."

    28. SG

      Yeah.

    29. JR

I snuck through it without getting hit and I got outside and friends of mine were like, in piles.

    30. SG

      (laughs) Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

  9. 27:4833:47

Trans sports controversy, media framing, and the ‘through the looking glass’ moment

    1. JR

Did you see... (laughs) Did you see that, uh, giant transgender woman that's playing rugby in Australia?

    2. SG

      No, she probably rules.

    3. JR

Yeah. She's, yeah, she's the king.

    4. SG

      (laughs) She's the king.

    5. JR

      She's the king. She's a 250 pound man.

    6. SG

      She's chucking people? She's Simone?

    7. JR

(laughs) Yeah. She's, no, she's a white guy.

    8. SG

      No? Oh, man.

    9. JR

      (laughs)

    10. SG

      She's a white guy. (laughs)

    11. JR

(laughs) You never seen it? Show, show the video. It's... The video is hilarious, because-

    12. SG

      It's... They're always so funny.

    13. JR

I don't even know if this person's undergone any transition, because we've gotten to this super preposterous point where you can just say you're a woman, you don't have to do anything. Like, there was a thing about, uh, a woman getting arrested for child molestation.

    14. SG

      Yeah.

    15. JR

And, uh, the... I'll, I'll send the video, because... I'm gonna, I'm gonna send you this, uh-

    16. SG

      That's what teachers should do.

    17. JR

... Jamie. But no, no, no, you have to see this because this woman has a beard. Yeah, look at that.

    18. SG

      Oh, shit, dude.

    19. NA

      That is ridiculous.

    20. JR

Look at that. Come on, look at the size of that male human being who is playing rugby against women. I mean, hilarious, right?

    21. SG

      Great tits though.

    22. JR

      Yeah, really good tits.

    23. SG

Pretty hot. They did good there.

    24. JR

      Brand, brand new.

    25. SG

Ah, some nice tits you've got. (laughs)

    26. JR

Yeah, I'm gonna show you... I'm gonna send you this, Jamie. Hold on a second.

    27. SG

Damn, look at the mitts on that lady.

    28. JR

So I just sent to you, Jamie. Yeah, that's a large person to be playing rugby against women. And I w- I would say that that was probably an unfair decision, but who am I just to assist gently-

    29. SG

      I'll tell you what-

    30. JR

Look at this. Woman charged after allegedly sexually assaulting Boy Six in Toronto Park. Woman with stubble, a crew cut, the most manly face, like a square jo... That's a fucking male human being. His name is Ruby, Ruby Ebbe. Okay.

Shane Gillis’ SNL arc: audition rules, Lorne Michaels, and the surreal callback process

    1. JR

What was your experience like with the whole SNL debacle thing? What was that like?

    2. SG

Uh, it's, uh, it was very, very crazy. I don't know. It's tough to... There's not many people that have, you can even talk to about it.

    3. JR

      Yeah.

    4. SG

You know? 'Cause it, it fucks you up a little. Like, it makes you, like, uh, not trust people and shit for a while.

    5. JR

      Like, in what way?

    6. SG

I don't know. I don't know how to explain it. It's, but, uh, back to the main, the experience of it was like, you just, uh, it was kinda surreal 'cause I went from, I was one of the first people to get, like, canceled or however you wanna say it, consequences. However.

    7. JR

      Yeah.

    8. SG

      However you wanna say it.

    9. JR

      (laughs)

    10. SG

Doesn't matter what we call it, it is what it is.

    11. JR

      Right.

    12. SG

But, uh, I was one of the first people to go from, I was doing, I was poor. I was not famous at all. I was poor. And then I got canceled immediately. Like, that was my th- like-

    13. JR

      Right. You didn't get-

    14. SG

It was a very different experience.

    15. JR

... famous and then get canceled?

    16. SG

Yeah, most people that get canceled are, yeah.

    17. JR

You got canceled on the way-

    18. SG

      I got canceled immediately.

    19. JR

      Yeah.

    20. SG

They, they literally were like, "How about this guy?" And everyone was like, "No."

    21. JR

So, you got cast on SNL?

    22. SG

      Yes.

    23. JR

      And then what happened?

    24. SG

Um, so I found out I was getting on SNL the day before they announced it. So I got a call, they're like, "Hey, we wanna put you on the cast." The whole time, I was... We'll start from the top.

    25. JR

      (laughs)

    26. SG

My, my agents and all those people, they were like, "You're, do you wanna audi- or do you wanna write, do you wanna send a packet in for SNL?" And I was like, "No. I'm not gonna be a writer. I'm never gonna... I won't work on that show." And then I guess they saw me at JFL and Comedy Central thing, and they were like, "We like him, we want him to audition. He can come straight in to audition." So I went straight to the main stage for the audition. And the whole time leading up to it, I was like, "I'm never, I'm never gonna get this. I d- I don't care. I wanna do standup." I kinda hated SNL at that point.

    27. JR

      (laughs)

    28. SG

'Cause every ti- every sketch was like... You know, you know what it is.

    29. JR

      Yeah.

    30. SG

And then I was like, "I'll never fit in there." And then when we, when you go to audition, it's just, you just wait your turn in a green room, and they keep you there extra long for, like, two or three hours to, like, make you nervous.

  11. 41:2444:29

Cancellation hits immediately: vetting blind spots, viral clips, and reading every comment

    1. SG

So many articles. I was ... I think I was number one on Twitter for, like, three straight days-

    2. JR

      Wow.

    3. SG

... of just getting fucking eviscerated.

    4. JR

      Did you read it all?

    5. SG

Oh, I read all of it.

    6. JR

      Oh, no.

    7. SG

Yeah, everybody was like, "Stop reading co-" I still read comments.

    8. JR

      Do you?

    9. SG

      I read every comment.

    10. JR

      Why?

    11. SG

      I don't know.

    12. JR

      Oh.

    13. SG

It's, it's fucked up. And it's crazy too, 'cause I'll read, like, 90 good ones and then 1 bad one, and like-

    14. JR

The one bad one will fuck you up.

    15. SG

It just depends which one it is.

    16. JR

      Right.

    17. SG

You know? I g- I'll get called, like, uh, you know, fat retard constantly. (laughs) I'll be like-

    18. JR

      (laughs)

    19. SG

... "Yeah, whatever. I can, I can walk through that no problem."

    20. JR

      Right.

    21. SG

But then there will be one that's like, "He's ner-" Uh, like something, something where they get you, where they, they know you.

    22. JR

      Yeah. Yeah.

    23. SG

Like, "He laughs at his own jokes on every podcast." And it's like, "Oh, fuck."

    24. JR

      Do I? Shit.

    25. SG

      Shit.

    26. JR

      Right.

    27. SG

Anyway. So I get ... All that stuff comes out. And it was funny. This is funny. I went into Lorne's, Lorne Michael's office, and he was talking to- And I was convinced I was getting fired. Like, I knew I was getting fired, 'cause if they didn't get me on that, there's so much more. (laughs)

    28. JR

      (laughs)

    29. SG

So much worse. (laughs) And, uh, so he was talking to me, and he was like, "No, we think we can ..." He's like, "If we just get you to the first episode, like, people will see you're not a piece-of-shit person."

    30. JR

      Right.

  12. 44:291:06:55

Statements, corporate panic, and getting fired: the mechanics of a public takedown

    1. JR

Dude, here's why it's fine. Your sketches that you're doing, what is it, Gillian Keeves?

    2. SG

      Yeah.

    3. JR

Those are the best fucking comedy sketches that are on the internet right now.

    4. SG

      Thank you.

    5. JR

I'm not, I'm not bullshitting. The only thing that's at the same level is Kyle Dunnigan's shit.

    6. SG

      Oh, man.

    7. JR

Kyle Dunnigan, the shit that he's doing-

    8. SG

      Oh, my God, dude.

    9. JR

... becau- he's got a, a massive advantage with that face swap, though.

    10. SG

And he's so good at fucking impressions.

    11. JR

      He's, he's amazing. He's-

    12. SG

      Yeah.

    13. JR

Have you seen the new thing that Dunnigan is doing? He's do- uh, the, uh, the, the fucking, what is it? The f- he does a Fresh Prince takeoff with Biden. What is it called?

    14. SG

      Yeah. Fresh Prince of DC.

    15. JR

      Yes.

    16. SG

      Or something, Fresh Prez.

    17. JR

      Something like that. Fresh Prez.

    18. SG

      Yeah.

    19. JR

      Dude, it's, it's tear-jerking. It's-

    20. SG

      Who's Bill Maher?

    21. JR

      Oh, my God, it's incredible.

    22. SG

      New rule.

    23. JR

      Yeah.

    24. SG

      It just... Oh, my God.

    25. JR

And it's, it is something about it that it's almost got like a South Park-esque quality to it.

    26. SG

      Yeah.

    27. JR

Because it looks so fake, but it's obvious... Uh, it's like, it's like these things. Like, look how bad these look.

    28. SG

      (laughs)

    29. JR

Look at the little tiny hand he holds up for Bill Maher. Like, the face swap thing is amazing. It really is amazing, because he's... Like, look at it, AOC, 'cause it looks so fake. Like you-

    30. SG

      Yeah.
