Rich Rebuilds origin story: salvage Teslas, right-to-repair, and why Tesla watched him

    1. JR

(drumbeats) Joe Rogan podcast, check it out.

    2. NA

      The Joe Rogan Experience.

    3. JR

Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day. (rock music plays) Hello, Rich.

    4. RB

      Hello, Joe.

    5. JR

Good to see you. What's happening?

    6. RB

How goes it, friend? It's been a while.

    7. JR

It's been a while, man. I've, uh, been watching your exploits.

    8. RB

      Thank you very much.

    9. JR

      (laughs)

    10. RB

Thank you. Thank you, thank you.

    11. JR

How is that, uh, V8 Tesla?

    12. RB

You know what's funny? I brought you something.

    13. JR

      Yeah?

    14. RB

      I brought you a magazine-

    15. JR

      Oh.

    16. RB

... based on the V8 Tesla. That's for you.

    17. JR

      Oh. No shit?

    18. RB

Actually, my hotel key's in there, so just so you can't take the whole thing. I had to keep it-

    19. JR

      Popular Mechanics?

    20. RB

      Yes, front cover.

    21. JR

      Wow.

    22. RB

      Thank you, thank you.

    23. JR

Did Tesla reach out or ... Well, they're still ... Are they still at odds with you? I wonder if-

    24. RB

You know what's funny? I don't even know if they ... They don't really care about me.

    25. JR

They don't? But they did for a while, right?

    26. RB

I think ... You know what? They would, They would watch me in, in silence-

    27. JR

      (laughs)

    28. RB

... and just, and just cautiously observe what I do, pretty much.

    29. JR

We should just tell everybody why. You were one of the very first guys that-

    30. RB

      That's yours. That's yours.

  2. 1:454:31

“Green” cars vs real environmental impact: energy use, solar, big houses, and landscaping chemicals

    1. RB

It's not easy, no. But I mean, that doesn't ... Why should they care about green? It's just about making money at that point. I mean, if it's ... If you think about this, what would ... I have this debate all the time. It ... A lot of people force others into buying an electric car to say, "Buying an electric car will solve the world's, you know, pollution issues. It's good for the environment."

    2. JR

      Right.

    3. RB

In reality, the best thing we could do is take a look at ourselves and see what we're wasting all of our energy on. Do you really need a Tesla? A bike would probably suffice. If you-

    4. JR

      You could just walk.

    5. RB

      (laughs) Just walk.

    6. JR

      Just walk everywhere.

    7. RB

Yeah, try walking. Like you don't really have to get rid of your '98, you know, Honda Civic that gets like 40 miles to the gallon to get a Tesla to pretend you're saving the environment.

    8. JR

You're kinda doing something 'cause you're not contributing as much to pollution, but then you have to power that car.

    9. RB

      Correct.

    10. JR

And sometimes people are powering their Tesla with coal plants-

    11. RB

      Yes.

    12. JR

      ... which is very ironic.

    13. RB

It's, it's funny. And ... You know what? But a lot of, a lot of good people ... I'm not saying the ones that don't are bad, but a lot of people are also powering their Teslas with the sun.

    14. JR

      Yeah.

    15. RB

So they have their Tesla, they plug it in, they have the solar panels on the roof, which is admirable.

    16. JR

      That's great.

    17. RB

At the same time, these people live in 10,000 square foot homes that have to be heated and cooled. They tend to forget about this.

    18. JR

      Yeah.

    19. RB

You have a 10,000 square foot house, it has to get heated and cooled. You have five acres of landscaped lawn, and you know what landscaping does to an ecosystem. It destroys everything in its path.

    20. JR

      Yeah.

    21. RB

So no animals could survive there because of your landscaping. You have a huge house, but you have a Tesla, so it's fine.

    22. JR

Yeah, I watched this landscaper the other day walk around my yard spraying stuff. I'm like-

    23. RB

      Right.

    24. JR

      ... "What's in that bottle?"

    25. RB

      Right. (laughs) Right.

    26. JR

Am I, am I still cool walking around barefoot?

    27. RB

      Right.

    28. JR

What happens if that shit gets on my feet?

    29. RB

Wait, they tell you, they tell you not to, to walk on it while they spray, don't they?

    30. JR

I don't know. This guy didn't tell me nothing.

  3. 4:315:20

Tesla culture, politics, and the Plaid experience: yoke steering, missing horn, and minimalism backlash

    1. JR

And now people are upset because Elon Musk said he would vote Republican 'cause the Democrats have lost her minds.

    2. RB

That pissed a whole lot of people off, Joe.

    3. JR

And they're like, "But my virtue signal-

    4. RB

      He was my savior.

    5. JR

      ... by driving your car."

    6. RB

My savior. Yeah, it didn't affect sales though, I'll tell you that much.

    7. JR

      I'm sure not.

    8. RB

      No.

    9. JR

      They're fucking great cars.

    10. RB

They're absolutely great. Do you still have yours, by the way?

    11. JR

Yeah, I have a new one. I have a Plaid that I drove here.

    12. RB

      You have a Plaid?

    13. JR

      Yeah.

    14. RB

How do you like your Plaid, by the way?

    15. JR

Ooh, it's ... I hate the steering wheel.

    16. RB

      Yes, the yellow thing?

    17. JR

      I don't like it.

    18. RB

      Yeah, no.

    19. JR

I don't like it. I don't like ... The other da- ... Today a guy changed lanes right in front of me and I went to hammer the s- the center console.

    20. RB

      Can't do that.

    21. JR

      The center button.

    22. RB

      Yeah.

    23. JR

      There's no b- horn there.

    24. RB

      There's no physical horn, yeah.

    25. JR

The horn is a button that's like you gotta get your thumb over to it.

    26. RB

      Right.

    27. JR

It's totally non-intuitive. I think they've adjusted that. I think the new ones ... which sucks for me. I don't know if they can retrofit the steering wheel.

    28. RB

Just buy a new car, Joe. That's what you wanna do. Just buy a new car, Joe, what's the big deal?

    29. JR

      That's-

    30. RB

      Buy a new one.

  4. 5:208:42

Battery degradation and the realities of owning older EVs

    1. RB

So the, uh, the funny thing about Teslas is that I have a, an older one and, um, what they don't tell you is after some time the battery degrades. And I have a Tesla Model X and I get about 200 and maybe 13 miles of range.

    2. JR

      That's not good.

    3. RB

Which is not good, but at the same time the suggestion is, "Well, just buy a new one." It's like, "Well, they're kind of expensive."

    4. JR

What was the new ... whe- when it was brand new, what was the range?

    5. RB

Brand new it was I think about ... It was a P- ... It's a 90D. I think the range was about maybe in the 250s.

    6. JR

      So it's lost some.

    7. RB

Or so, around 250. So it's lost some.

    8. JR

      Jamie has a X. What does ... How's yours?

    9. GU

Uh, I don't really charge it past 250 ever and I never go below 60, so-

    10. RB

      Right.

    11. GU

And I charge it every week-

    12. RB

      Mm-hmm.

    13. GU

... just so that I don't have those problems.

    14. RB

      But he has that option.

    15. JR

      Yeah.

    16. RB

So what year is yours, Jamie?

    17. GU

      2020, I think.

    18. RB

      Oh, he has a ... Mine's like a 2016 ... I have the poverty spec one, the 2016.

    19. JR

And that is ... Was that the first year they came out?

    20. RB

      First year.

    21. JR

Tiffany Haddish had one of those, and she was making it dance in the parking lot-

    22. RB

      Oh, the door.

    23. JR

      ... of the comedy store.

    24. RB

I hate that so, I hate that-

    25. JR

      (laughs)

    26. RB

... dance so much. People, I hate it. I hate it, Joe. I do. I do.

    27. JR

      (laughs) It's kinda fun.

    28. RB

It is kinda fun, but I, I, when I see someone, I immediately just walk away. I just, I just, for some reason, I think it's so, it's so gimmicky and just ... And then, you know, I did that once to impress my kids, and the door broke, and I was like, "You know what?"

    29. JR

      (laughs)

    30. RB

      "Never again."

  5. 8:4211:19

Car enthusiasm vs pure performance: why people keep gas cars (Porsche, muscle cars, and feel)

    1. RB

Let me ask you a question. As great as that Tesla is, right? And this is a common debate I get into all the time with, with Tesla owners. Where are your other cars? Do you still own them?

    2. JR

      Yeah.

    3. RB

You have, you have a Porsche still?

    4. JR

      Yeah.

    5. RB

So that's what I'm saying. It's, it's very, it's ... From a car enthusiast perspective, as great as that car is, you can't only have that car. There are other cars that check certain boxes for you-

    6. JR

      Yeah.

    7. RB

... that do other things that the Plaid doesn't do.

    8. JR

Well, I'm a big fan of the old muscle cars.

    9. RB

      Yeah.

    10. JR

      I have a, a few-

    11. RB

You have a few Corvettes still?

    12. JR

      Yeah.

    13. RB

      Okay.

    14. JR

I have that. I have a few like '60s, '70s muscle cars that-

    15. RB

      Right.

    16. JR

Those, they, they give you the, the emotions.

    17. RB

      Yes.

    18. JR

      The (imitates engine revving) .

    19. RB

      Yeah. The car ...

    20. JR

      (imitates engine revving) Yeah. Fuckin'-

    21. RB

Which, which, which car is that? That actually sounded very familiar.

    22. JR

      I don't know.

    23. RB

      Okay. (laughs)

    24. JR

My, my impressions of cars suck. (laughs)

    25. RB

      (laughs)

    26. JR

      But, uh-

    27. RB

      Yeah.

    28. JR

... I, I love the old V8 muscle cars, but it's 'cause I was like in high school in the '80s and like-

    29. RB

      Right.

    30. JR

... that's what everybody wanted, and-

  6. 11:1925:41

Charging infrastructure, battery swapping, and the “conflict minerals” debate

    1. JR

So if I ... But the charging thing's a bitch.

    2. RB

      Really?

    3. JR

Like, if I didn't have one at my house, and I didn't have one here-

    4. RB

      Yeah.

    5. JR

... a charging port, like if I lived in an apartment-

    6. RB

      Right.

    7. JR

      ... and I couldn't get charged anywhere.

    8. RB

      Mm-hmm.

    9. JR

Like that's ... I have friends that ha- don't have a charging thing at their house.

    10. RB

      Yeah.

    11. JR

      And it's fucking annoying.

    12. RB

      It's-

    13. JR

      If you gotta go somewhere.

    14. RB

It's funny how people want Teslas so bad they're willing to live with a lot of the inconveniences of them, for example.

    15. JR

      Yeah.

    16. RB

Um, I think they were saying on a ... I forget what investing site it is. Tesla owners have the longest lease terms, the longest payment terms of any other manufacturer.

    17. JR

      Hm.

    18. RB

People just want these cars so much, it's not even funny. You live in an apartment, it's, it is tough, because a lot of people are starting to petition to their apartments to say, "Install a charging station because I have a Tesla, and I have every right to charge my car here." It's a common thing now.

    19. JR

      Sort of.

    20. RB

      Yeah.

    21. JR

      You sort of do.

    22. RB

      Right.

    23. JR

'Cause it costs money to charge.

    24. RB

It costs money to install and charge-

    25. JR

Like, who's paying for that money? You gonna have a, like, a pay thing?

    26. RB

      They, they won't pay.

    27. JR

      Yeah-

    28. RB

      Yeah.

    29. JR

... they don't wanna pay. They go, "Just fucking let me charge you."

    30. RB

      "Just do it." Yeah.

  7. 25:4127:49

Why Rich built the V8 Tesla: parts restrictions, ownership frustration, and the LS solution

    1. JR

So what was the motivation to build this V8 Tesla?

    2. RB

      That's a good question. So I-

    3. JR

Let's see. Pull up a video of, uh, Rich's, uh, YouTube channel.

    4. RB

Tesla got a, um ... As I was building, you know, the different Teslas over the years, a lot of the, I guess, the fanboys got to me after a while. I mean, they ... Have you- have you been around like Tesla fanatics, like ultra-fanatics that are just like-

    5. JR

I try to avoid all fanatics.

    6. RB

      Yes. Gosh.

    7. JR

      In every single area-

    8. RB

      Yes.

    9. JR

      ... of life.

    10. RB

Every genre, yes. (laughs) So far, yeah.

    11. JR

      It's just, they're too crazy.

    12. RB

It's- it's a bit much. So what started happening over time was Tesla kind of pulled the reins in on ordering parts for cars. If I wanted to order like a battery or a motor, a battery, a motor, a charger, I can't do those things. Like those are restricted parts. You can't do that. So what that tells me is that the product that I bought, the product I spent all this money on, I can't- I don't really own it.

    13. JR

      Right.

    14. RB

Because they're in control of the parts for it.

    15. JR

      Like a iPhone?

    16. RB

Correct, yes. Just exactly like a iPhone. So I said to myself, "You know what?" It's funny. Now that's a funny clip. That's when I actually ran out of gas there.

    17. JR

      (laughs)

    18. RB

Go figure. I ran out of gas and that's actually a- an electric Tesla bringing me gas. It was... Th- that's a different story. But um, what ended up happening was it ... Over time it got worse and worse. Over time it's like, "Well, well what's the VIN number to this car? Oh, we don't- we're not- we don't believe in selling you these parts. This- this isn't gonna work. That car is a salvage car. You can't do it." And I said to myself, "You know what? What, um, what can I do to this vehicle to make it so that I can get parts easy and it's easy to service? And I have full control over it." I said, "You know what? I'm a Chevy fanboy, I'm gonna throw an LS in there." Throwing an LS in there, that allows me to get parts literally off the shelf from AutoZone.

    19. JR

      Right.

    20. RB

Like for- for Tesla, if my Tesla breaks, let's just say you're in- in your Plaid right now, right? And you break down at the side of the road and the tow truck driver says, "What do you want me to bring you?" You gonna say AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts or Pep Boys? No. There isn't a single part sold for those cars there. If I break down the V8 Tesla, you could pull me anywhere. I could get, uh, pistons, rods, you name it, lifters, valves for that car literally anywhere. And I have full control over it.

  8. 27:4930:37

How the V8 Tesla works: accessory-mode trick, dual systems, and keeping the Tesla UI alive

    1. JR

How did you make the V8 engine interface with the Tesla dashboard?

    2. RB

That's a great question. So all cars have what's known as an accessory mode, right? The drive rails aren't on and if the engine isn't on, but the accessories are on. You go into a car, you take the screen, it turns on, but the engine isn't on?

    3. JR

      Right.

    4. RB

So the Tesla effectively believes it's in accessory mode right now. All the windows work, uh, the headlights work, the turn signals work, everything works. It's just that the last button to turn on the drive rails and actually start the car, that's no longer there. And that's where the V8 engine takes over.

    5. JR

      Ah.

    6. RB

So imagine- imagine um, you have your, I don't know, you have your Porsche, right? Your GT3. You get in that car, you sit in it right now and you do everything but turn the engine over. All the accessories work. The lights work, the radio works, everything works except for that last phase to turn the fuel pump on, set the spark plugs on to turn the engine over. So the Tesla just thinks it's on and idle, but not ready to drive.

    7. JR

      Really?

    8. RB

      Yeah. So-

    9. JR

And how did you rig that?

    10. RB

So the V8 ... So basically any Tesla will do that. You pull a Tesla out of a junkyard, you could get in it, sit in it, make sure it's getting power and you could at least get to that step. Now the way the V8 takes over is ... V8s are probably the ... it's the dumbest engine alive. You- you give it- you give it a battery (laughs) to start it over and you give it fuel, it's going to run. So there's a separate control system for the engine itself. So we have a- a Haltech system that communicates with that, so there's actually two separate systems that control the car. And if one of those systems dies, the car will still function. If the Tesla screen dies all of a sudden and Tesla says, "You know what? Had enough of this." That V8, it'll still turn on and I could still go wherever I want.

    11. JR

You just won't have a speedometer and you won't have a fuel gauge.

    12. RB

Well, actually I will because the- the separate system, the Haltech system, controls the- the gas engine still.

    13. JR

      Oh.

    14. RB

So there's two in- independent systems that work, uh, separate of each other.

    15. JR

So the separate system ... What- what kind of dashboard are you looking at? Are you looking at the same dashboard that-

    16. RB

      Yes.

    17. JR

      ... a regular Tesla has?

    18. RB

Same. So that speedometer still works too 'cause it goes by the wheel speed sensors.

    19. JR

      Oh.

    20. RB

That speedometer still works, the navigation works, the Bluetooth works, the car works.

    21. JR

      Really?

    22. RB

If you were to sit in that car right now, besides the- the six-speed shifter, you wouldn't be able to tell that anything's special about it.

    23. JR

So you have a six-speed manual in there?

    24. RB

      Six-speed manual shifter. Yeah, it-

    25. JR

      Wow.

    26. RB

... you'll see it right there in that video right there to the ...

    27. JR

Back it up a little bit. Do you call it ICE-T? (laughs)

    28. RB

      ICE-T, yeah.

    29. JR

      Internal combustion engine tea.

    30. RB

      Engine Tesla, yeah.

  9. 30:3739:10

Building it for real: cutting the car in half, fabrication tunnel, weight loss, and track behavior

    1. JR

How hard was this to do?

    2. RB

Um, it, it took a team of us. It was ... We have, uh, uh, Joshua, our, uh, our fabricator. We had to literally cut the car in half.

    3. JR

      Really?

    4. RB

To form the transmission tunnel. Because Teslas are ... Teslas are one of the few cars which are great because they were designed as EVs only.

    5. JR

      Right.

    6. RB

Right? Some companies will take a gas car and then throw an electric drivetrain in it and call it a day. Teslas were designed from the ground up to be electric vehicles. Well, the Model S was. So the floor is completely flat. Y- y- ... If ... For rear-wheel-drive cars, you have a drive shaft-

    7. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    8. RB

... that goes from the front to the back. Well, we couldn't put that there because the floor is flat. We had to cut the car in half, install the engine, and then build a transmission tunnel over that drive shaft from the front all the way back. Also a transmission tunnel as well.

    9. JR

      Whoa.

    10. RB

Because there's the transmission, you know, that sticks out like a couple feet.

    11. JR

      So this is all fabricated?

    12. RB

All fabrication. All fabri- ... The, uh, I mean, countless hours have gone into that. So-

    13. JR

How long from the time you had this idea to the actual starting and driving?

    14. RB

      About two years.

    15. JR

      Wow. (laughs) That's-

    16. RB

      So-

    17. JR

      ... such a crazy commitment.

    18. RB

But y- you know how it is. Like you, you ... The planning stages are like, "Hmm, yeah, I'm gonna do this."

    19. JR

      Right.

    20. RB

"Yeah, I'm gonna do it. I should do it. How much is that? Nah, I'm not gonna do it." And then you ... I, I was contemplating for a while, and then I said, "You know what? I gotta commit to this. Let's start doing this." Uh, hooked up with Joshua. He's like, "Hey, listen." He actually, um ... Fun fact. So he was watching one of the videos and he's just like, "Hey," like, you know, "If you need help with fabrication stuff, let me know." Um, he used to build like NASCARs.

    21. JR

      Oh, wow.

    22. RB

Like, tube chassis. Okay, he says, "I could do stuff." Never seen his work before. I took that V8 Tesla, dropped it off at his house, and I said, "I trust you on this one."

    23. JR

      (laughs)

    24. RB

And then that was it. The rest was history. So I, I would ... We would go there, shoot video. Uh, the first start video was there. And we just worked on it until the end, and then it's running and driving.

    25. JR

So when you cut it in half-

    26. RB

      Mm-hmm.

    27. JR

... do you have to do something to ensure the s- the rigidity of the structure?

    28. RB

The structure? Yeah, there's, there's bracing and reinforcements all over the car.

    29. JR

So is it much heavier than the original car?

    30. RB

It's about 1,200 pounds lighter than the original car.

Mod culture, nostalgia traps, and oddball imports: Supras, Skylines, Evos, and Kei trucks

    1. JR

Like how many people have done those to Supras?

    2. RB

      Oh, God.

    3. JR

Like those old '90s style Supras?

    4. RB

There's an infinite amount of Supra owners that have been doing that.

    5. JR

I saw one sold, it was in my newsfeed yesterday. I think it sold for a quarter million dollars.

    6. RB

      Really? Yeah.

    7. JR

      A '94, '95 Supra. I'm like, "What?"

    8. RB

You, you know what's a, what's a bitch, Joe? Nostalgia is a bitch.

    9. JR

      Yeah.

    10. RB

I, um, I, I recently purchased a couple cars that I've always wanted when I was a kid. I've always wanted a Skyline, you know, the right-hand drive Skylines?

    11. JR

Hmm. You got one of those?

    12. RB

I got one of those. And I've always wanted, uh, uh, an Evo, you know, the Mitsubishi Evo-

    13. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    14. RB

... Lancer Evolution VIII? Always wanted one of those. I bought those cars, Joe. And the reason why nostalgia is a bitch is because they're slow as hell.

    15. JR

      (laughs)

    16. RB

From a modern standpoint, if you drive any modern car now-

    17. JR

      Yeah.

    18. RB

You, uh ... Now that you have a Plaid, everything else-

    19. JR

      Everything's slow.

    20. RB

      ... it's a novelty.

    21. JR

      Yeah.

    22. RB

So like, I, I don't have a Plaid, but I have a 911. Like the Evo, there's no Bluetooth. There's no leather seats. The car rattles. It squeaks. The paint is terrible. It handles like a go-kart and it's awesome, but at the end of the day, it's a, it's a novelty.

    23. JR

      Yeah.

    24. RB

So everything else that you drive ... I mean, that car is 20 years old. The Skyline is 30 years old. And those cars, you get in them, there's, there's, there's no modern safety. They're, they're not very fast. The shifter is notchy. They're economy cars in Japan, but here, they're really cool. I've driven them a total of maybe seven miles and I'm like, "I think I'm done here. I'm going back to the Porsche. Thank you."

    25. JR

      (laughs)

    26. RB

So that, that's the tough part.

    27. JR

So you just have it and you're just gonna hang onto it for a while?

    28. RB

I'll probably, I'll probably get rid of the, uh, the Skyline first 'cause when I was a kid, I've always wanted a, a, an Evo. So I think I'll, I'll fix that, build it up, make it really nice. But the Skyline is gonna go for sure.

    29. JR

Is it weird to drive with the right-hand side?

    30. RB

      Very weird.

NSX love letter: ergonomics, manual purity, and why old cars still matter

    1. JR

When it comes to nostalgia, for me there's one car that I've been thinking about a lot lately, it's the NSX. Oh my gosh. I had two NSXs.

    2. RB

      You have?

    3. JR

I used to. I don't have any anymore.

    4. RB

      Okay.

    5. JR

But I ha- I had one in the '90s with the flip-up headlights.

    6. RB

      Mm-hmm.

    7. JR

And I had another one in 2005.

    8. RB

      With the static ones?

    9. JR

      Yes.

    10. RB

Yeah. Those were nice cars, man.

    11. JR

It wasn't fast, but I put a, uh, a Comptec supercharger on it-

    12. RB

      Mm-hmm.

    13. JR

... and it got into like the 400 horsepower range.

    14. RB

      How was it?

    15. JR

      It was great.

    16. RB

      Really?

    17. JR

It was fun. But it, the... it was just there's something about the cockpit and the feel of that car.

    18. RB

Oh, I want that. I want the new NSX.

    19. JR

      You like the new one?

    20. RB

I like the new one, yeah.

    21. JR

      They're s- they're not making them anymore.

    22. RB

They stopped making them. And the prices shot up.

    23. JR

They're making the S. The S is the, the, the latest and greatest and it's supposed to be pretty fucking incredible.

    24. RB

How come you didn't get a, uh, a second generation NSX since you like

    25. JR

      'Cause it's automatic.

    26. RB

      Yeah, I feel you.

    27. JR

What I, what I liked about the first generation NSX was that it was a super lightweight mid-engine car-

    28. RB

      Mm-hmm.

    29. JR

      ... with a manual gearbox-

    30. RB

      Right.

Comedy grind and YouTube creativity: open mics, writing, “cringe” skits, and the creator treadmill

    1. RB

You know, Joe, we had a conversation a while back where you, you, you thought that I should potentially do comedy. Are you still ... Is this still a thing?

    2. JR

      Yes. You could do it.

    3. RB

Maybe I'll, maybe I'll go to your show. When, when you, when you come up with something.

    4. JR

I think any smart person who's funny can do comedy.

    5. RB

      Really?

    6. JR

So you definitely could do comedy. It's a matter of whether or not you wanted to dedicate yourself and put the time in.

    7. RB

      Oh, geez.

    8. JR

It's a fucking ... Like there's this girl who I saw do stand up for the first time and she's pretty funny. And I told her, I go like, "Hey, I think you're really funny. You could really do this." And then I went to her Instagram page the other day-

    9. RB

      Yeah.

    10. JR

... and watched her ... A clip that she put up of an open mic, and it reminded me of what a fucking journey this is.

    11. RB

      Mm-hmm.

    12. JR

      What a grind.

    13. RB

      Right.

    14. JR

Like she's on the first steps of like ... What's that Georgia t- the Appalachian Trail?

    15. RB

      Yep.

    16. JR

Where it takes like six months to walk it?

    17. RB

      Exactly.

    18. JR

      That's what she's doing.

    19. RB

      Right.

    20. JR

But it's way worse than six months. It's like y- she's on a six year trail.

    21. RB

It is. So there's a difference between someone wanting to do it recreationally and also do it to like put food on the table. I think I could-

    22. JR

      Yes.

    23. RB

I could do it as like an open mic night-

    24. JR

      For sure.

    25. RB

... and, and get a few chuckles.

    26. JR

      100%.

    27. RB

But when it comes to putting food on the table for ... My kids would die. There was no way we would make any money with comedy.

    28. JR

      You could do it.

    29. RB

      I couldn't make it.

    30. JR

It just would take a Herculean effort and it would take years and years of dedicating yourself to open mic nights-
