    1. NA

(drum roll) Joe Rogan podcast, check it out.

    2. SM

      The Joe Rogan Experience.

    3. JR

Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day. (instrumental music) What's happening, brother? We're up and rolling.

    4. SM

      Thanks for having me.

    5. JR

      Pleasure to meet you finally.

    6. SM

I know. This is, uh, I'm excited to be here.

    7. JR

You're one of my favorite guys.

    8. SM

      Really? Thank you.

    9. JR

Yeah. You're, there's this group of guys that are coming up that are so good right now. I feel like this is a great time for, like, fresh, up-and-coming comedy talent. It's like there's so many guys who've been doing comedy, like, 15-plus years who are just fucking starting to crack, you know?

    10. SM

Yeah. Our group is, like, really, you know, my closest friends are ... They work their ass off, so that makes me work my ass off.

    11. JR

      Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    12. SM

      I love it.

    13. JR

I love it too. That's, that's so important. We were talking about Shane Gillis. Shane Gillis has this fucking bit last night about George Washington that's so good.

    14. SM

      (laughs)

    15. JR

It's so good. Like, I was watching, I was going, "Goddamn, this is great," 'cause it's like a perfect bit that combines his love of history-

    16. SM

      Right.

    17. JR

... with just, like, Shane, you know? Like, his-

    18. SM

      (laughs)

    19. JR

The way he acts things out-

    20. SM

      Yeah.

    21. JR

... and he's just like, "I don't want to give up, any of it up. It's so fucking funny." (laughs)

    22. SM

There's nothing worse than trying to paraphrase another comic's bit that they're working on, and then they're like, "Why did you do that? You made my bit unfunny?"

    23. JR

      I would ruin it-

    24. SM

      Yeah.

    25. JR

... and I'd give it away. And on top of that, it's like, it's very physical. You, you have to see it if you see ... It's-

    26. SM

He's, he's a rare combination of a great joke writer, but also a great performer.

    27. JR

      Yeah.

    28. SM

I mean, when he did Trump speed dating in that sketch?

    29. JR

      (laughs)

    30. SM

That was like ... I was like, I'm, I don't like Trump impressions. I think they're kind of an easy impression.

  2. 15:0030:00

    (laughs) …

    1. SM

      that fucking coffee down."

    2. JR

      (laughs)

    3. SM

How cool is that to do that to your ... It's like, it's like doing it, like, to you, you'd do that, like, to like George Carlin or something.

    4. JR

      Right. Yeah.

    5. SM

      It's so cool.

    6. JR

      Yeah.

    7. SM

      Jack fucking Lemmon.

    8. JR

      Yeah.

    9. SM

      That guy kicked ass.

    10. JR

      Yeah. No shit. Fuck yeah.

    11. SM

The Apartment, one of the greatest movies of all time.

    12. JR

      Jack Lemmon's awesome.

    13. SM

On that point, Billy Wilder, maybe the best American director of all time when you look at like the, the, the variety of work he did. Like, you do a movie like The Apartment, then he also did like Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard and Some Like it Hot. Like, who's making those l- like, different types of movies?

    14. JR

I don't think I've seen any of those.

    15. SM

Oh, dude. Double Indemnity is like the best film noir ever, maybe.

    16. JR

      Yeah?

    17. SM

Oh, it's brilliant. Edward G Robinson and Fred MacMurray at fucking-

    18. JR

Are you ... You're a big film buff?

    19. SM

      I like movies. Yeah.

    20. JR

      Do-

    21. SM

I'm on the road a lot. I'm m- You know, I like to watch a g- I ... You feel better if you watch something good on the road than if I just watch some like Beat Bobby Flay horseshit.

    22. JR

Right. Yeah. Yeah. Um, d- A lot of people feel like to, to, to be entertained is actually good for the creative process.

    23. SM

      Yeah, it inspires you.

    24. JR

      Yeah.

    25. SM

      You know, you feel-

    26. JR

      Yeah.

    27. SM

You feel like you wanna make ... You know, like, I'm not gonna make a movie. That's not my sp- But like I watch them, like I wanna make something. I wanna make stuff, so ...

    28. JR

Do you do any movie-making stuff?

    29. SM

      No.

    30. JR

      Do you write or anything?

  3. 30:0045:00

    (laughs) …

    1. SM

    2. JR

      (laughs)

    3. SM

"You're not even being the right type of racist, you idiot." And then, and (laughs) , and Raul has the greatest comeback, he goes, "Airborne infantry, what tribe are you in?" And Bobby just goes, "Well played." (laughs)

    4. JR

      (laughs)

    5. SM

He took his Ls, which I appreciated, but the club was gr- I mean, it's still great. It's a, it's a classic old school club. Like, I heard when Larry Miller walked in there, he just, like, walked in, and he was like... (sniffs) ... do you smell it?" Like, it was, like, one of those-

    6. JR

      Yeah.

    7. SM

... where it's like, "This is a classic club."

    8. JR

Right. Like when Paul Newman in The Color of Money walks into a pool hall. (sniffs) "I smell action."

    9. SM

      Hell yeah.

    10. JR

      Yeah, yeah.

    11. SM

Ah, dude, Paul Newman fucking ruled it.

    12. JR

Oh, my God. He's one of the greats.

    13. SM

      Ugh.

    14. JR

He's fucking... That guy. Jesus Christ.

    15. SM

I think I saw Handlook, like, for some reason, like, once a week. It's just, like, the coolest movie.

    16. JR

Ah, he's been in so many cool movies, man.

    17. SM

      Yeah.

    18. JR

      Yeah. Those old-school club owners.

    19. SM

      Yeah.

    20. JR

Did you ever do Kansas City?

    21. SM

I've done the newer room there. I never did Sanford and Sons. I heard that's, like, uh...

    22. JR

Sanford's, like, Craig used to run S- I don't know if he's still alive anymore. But Craig also, like, promoted boxing or something like that.

    23. SM

      (laughs)

    24. JR

He was involved in boxing DVDs 'cause he-

    25. SM

      A side hustle.

    26. JR

He was always, like, giving me DVDs of these boxing matches that he was a, a part of. But he had, like, the worst toupee and he sounded like Beetlejuice.

    27. SM

      (laughs)

    28. JR

He's like, "Everybody take care ƒ- ugh. Here we go. We're gonna go to this place. Ugh." And, you know, he was always trying to bang his waitresses and shit. He was hilarious.

    29. SM

      Oh, my God.

    30. JR

Like, "Come here. Sit on my lap."

  4. 45:001:00:00

    Yeah. He is. …

    1. JR

physical. He's so funny-looking, too. He's like a human cartoon.

    2. SM

      Yeah. He is.

    3. JR

      And he's so likable.

    4. SM

      Yeah.

    5. JR

It's like everything is going great for him.

    6. SM

Yeah, I remember he had a story on one o-... on Ari's, uh, This Is Not Happening, that was so freaking funny. He's a great storyteller. He's, he's good at everything.

    7. JR

He's also a guy that got on Saturday Night Live and was like, "Fuck this. Fuck all." He talked to his wife about it. His wife's like, "Why don't you quit?" And he's like, "Just quit Saturday Night Live? Really?"

    8. SM

      (laughs)

    9. JR

And she was like, "Yeah, get out of there. Fuck this."

    10. SM

      But that was the '90s.

    11. JR

      You're not happy."

    12. SM

That's when, like, you were like, "I'll get a movie deal out of th-..." Like, that... You... That w-... That was such a launching pad in the '90s.

    13. JR

But he walked away from all of it.

    14. SM

      Yeah.

    15. JR

Like, on purpose. Not because he didn't have prospects or talent, and not because people weren't interested in him. He's like, "Fuck that. I'm gonna live in New Jersey. I don't give a shit. I just don't fucking care. I re- really don't fucking care. I'm just gonna do standup." And that's what he did, and he still does. He's still, like, p-... one, one of the best ever.

    16. SM

A lot of great standups don't get their shine on SNL, I feel like. You know, even, even Chris Rock's a great example. I'm like, "He was funny on SNL," but then when he left, that's when it's like, "Oh, that's Chris Rock."

    17. JR

      Right.

    18. SM

You know? I feel like Colin Quinn's another one. He's so great at standup.

    19. JR

      Yeah.

    20. SM

You know? So many great standup... It's... Uh, it's a hard format for a great standup, I feel like.

    21. JR

It's a dead format. It, like... It's, like, it's still alive, but it's not the same thing. Like, to compare that to, like, Belushi and Aykroyd in this. Like, it's not... It's not really Saturday Night Live anymore.

    22. SM

But, you know, also never... They never get appreciated 'til, like, 20 years later, 'cause like everyone-

    23. JR

      Yeah.

    24. SM

... said that cast sucked, and I, I liked them a lot. They were... I was a kid watching that. Like-

    25. JR

      Who said that cast sucked?

    26. SM

Ev-... I... At the time, people were always like, "Well, they're not, uh, Phil Hartman," and... Like, whatever classes before-

    27. JR

      Really?

    28. SM

Yeah. Oh, totally. Yeah. When I was a kid, I remember people being like... But I was like, "Holy shit, Will Ferrell." Like, I-

    29. JR

      Yeah.

    30. SM

I loved it. I, I thought they were great.

  5. 1:00:001:02:23

    Yeah. …

    1. JR

      "No."

    2. SM

      Yeah.

    3. JR

"No, this is, this is it. This is it."

    4. SM

And, and does what get better? Like-

    5. JR

      Life.

    6. SM

      ... just life?

    7. JR

      Yeah.

    8. SM

      Yeah.

    9. JR

I think one of the things that we have as comics that a lot of artists don't have is we have a community. We have a group that we get together and we do the thing together. You know, like last night, I was saying after the show, we had Hans Kim, Brian Simpson, David Lucas, Eddie Bravo, Tony Hinchcliffe, Shane Gillis, Ari Shaffir, and me, and we had the fucking best time. We were all hammered, right? 'Cause we did, we did the podcast, we all got blacked out drunk, and then we went and did Kill Tony that night, and then the next night, we all did standup together, and it was fucking magic. And I was like, "That is everything." Because it's so hard sometimes to relate to other people, like, what, what you do. You know?

    10. SM

      Yeah.

    11. JR

Like, "So how do you come up with your jokes?" I'm like, "Hm, so, you know, I write-"

    12. SM

      I know.

    13. JR

"... do stuff, I think of things."

    14. SM

But it was just, like, an instant connection with comics.

    15. JR

      Yeah.

    16. SM

I mean, like, I've never met you, you're easy to talk to, and it's, you know, it's, it's the comic thing.

    17. JR

      Yes.

    18. SM

I know, uh, you're also, you know, you've done a lot of interviews in your day, you know how to do this, but also there's a thing past that where you're like, there is a comic connection where, like, you're in the green room, you don't know the guy opening for you, he sits down-... it's not weird usually.

    19. JR

Right. It's like, "Hey, what's up?"

    20. SM

Yeah. It's like people know how to be, and, and-

    21. JR

Yeah. Where'd you start? Where are you from? You know, where, what's your opening club? Where'd you go?

    22. SM

I mean, at Comedy Cellar, I remember like, at first, I was so nervous to work there because I, I had so much reverence for that club as a young New York comic. I wouldn't go there before I worked there. I was too nervous. I, I had too much respect for the club. And then when I started working there, you know, uh, she books me on these like 11:30 shows every night, and then I'm going on at 1:00 AM every night. And you're like, "Oh, shit. My lifestyle is really changing." And then I look around, I'm like, "Oh, I get to, I get to watch Dave Attell every night-

    23. JR

      Yeah.

    24. SM

... because I'm on the late show." So you're like, "Holy shit." And then you kind of become, you know, friendly with those guys.

    25. JR

      Yeah.

    26. SM

And you kind of start to d- I mean, it, I learned more from watching Dave Attell than anything in comedy. Like you can't, you can't learn more than ... He's, to me, he's the best comic I've ever seen. I-

    27. JR

He's one of the greatest of all time.

    28. SM

      Yeah.

    29. JR

      Unquestionably. And-

    30. SM

And he's so fucking funny. Like it's-
