Catching up and the obsession with watching UFC live (and avoiding spoilers)

    1. NA

(drumbeats) Joe Rogan podcast, check it out.

    2. The Joe Rogan Experience.

    3. JR

Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day. (rock music) And we're up, Steve-o. What's happening my brother?

    4. ST

      Yeah, dude.

    5. JR

      Good to see ya.

    6. ST

Good to see you too, man.

    7. JR

      What's crackin'?

    8. ST

It's been, it's been a long time. Remember-

    9. JR

Every time I see you I'm just happy you're in one piece.

    10. ST

      (laughs)

    11. JR

      Just happy all, everything's working.

    12. ST

      Yeah.

    13. JR

I can't believe it, that all the people that have gotten fucked up doing the things that you do, you're out there fucking moving around like normal.

    14. ST

      Right, I'm thriving.

    15. JR

      (laughs)

    16. ST

Um, and, and it hasn't been so. I mean, I see you at the fights all the time.

    17. JR

      Yeah, all the time.

    18. ST

Yeah. Man, it's crazy the, uh, I- I- I just got so hooked on that.

    19. JR

Yeah, it's, uh, the most exciting live experience you could ever encounter.

    20. ST

      For sure.

    21. JR

      I really believe that.

    22. ST

And dude, how about this last card?

    23. JR

      Woo.

    24. ST

      (laughs)

    25. JR

It, I think it was one of the most first round knockouts ever.

    26. ST

      Seven.

    27. JR

Yeah, it was pretty crazy. Or first round stoppages. It was, uh, it was a wild card, man. Wild card.

    28. ST

Yeah. Um, I- I was on an airplane at the time that it was happening a- and, you know, a lot of the time I'm- I'm on stage doing, doing my show when the fights are happening, and in those situations, like, I- I will move my Instagram app off the f- the, like, front screen of my phone.

    29. JR

      So you can't see?

    30. ST

Yeah, because I'll just inadvertently, like-

  2. 3:3911:20

Adesanya vs. Pereira breakdown: calf kicks, stoppages, and striking vs. power

    1. JR

Yeah, I'm- I'm obviously I'm a giant fan. That- that Stylbender fight, how crazy was that?

    2. ST

      Really crazy, man.

    3. JR

Dude, the way he responded to that loss is better than anybody ever.

    4. ST

      Yeah.

    5. JR

The dude shows up at the press conference with a fucking fur coat like a king.

    6. ST

      (laughs)

    7. JR

With his dope ass watch on and just says, "He got me." You know? I mean, he basically said-

    8. ST

      Right.

    9. JR

... "The hunter is now the hunted. I'm coming after him, I'm gonna find a way to beat that dude. I was on my way to beating him." And he got him.

    10. ST

      Yeah.

    11. JR

And he was honest about all of it, about how the, uh, uh, Pereira, uh, landed a bunch of calf kicks early on and it fucked up his leg and couldn't-

    12. ST

      Peroneal.

    13. JR

      ... kneel, right. Yeah.

    14. ST

      Nerve.

    15. JR

Yeah, it's, uh, those calf kicks have changed the fucking game.

    16. ST

      Yeah.

    17. JR

I can't believe, like, I was talking to Michael Bisping, who was UFC champion, and he said that literally he got through his entire career before the calf kick came along.

    18. ST

      Yeah.

    19. JR

Which is so wild when you think about that.

    20. ST

      Right.

    21. JR

I mean, he got through his whole career before the calf kick emerged, which is insane to think of. That this one area of the leg to kick, the only person that had really done it before that was, like, Benson Henderson was pretty good at doing it and, you know, Mighty Mouse had done it, uh, to Henry Cejudo and it happened to Michael Chandler in Bellator, but it wasn't, like, a staple, like, everybody had to do it.

    22. ST

      Right.

    23. JR

And now everyone has to do it and it just takes, like, one or two shots and your leg is fucked.

    24. ST

Yeah. Um, a- and what with the stoppage too on the, this Izzy fight, I thought, you know, and it wasn't a bad stoppage, but at the same time, I'd like, it- it was impressive how Izzy said, um, "I- I, in- in the moment I thought it was a bad stoppage, but then my- my- my coach and my manager, they said it was fine and I trust them and so it's all good."

    25. JR

Well, I don't think Pereira was gonna stop. He had more time, Izzy was stationary and Pereira was gonna hit him with some big shots. W- we don't need to see Izzy-

    26. ST

      Right.

    27. JR

... with his eyes rolled back behind his head flat out-

    28. ST

      Right.

    29. JR

      ... unconscious.

    30. ST

      I- I-

  3. 11:2015:51

Weight cutting transparency and why elite strikers in MMA are terrifying

    1. ST

Oh, man. I wonder, like, this is a, a question I've, I've been dying to ask. Um, what do you think about if, like, um, when, when the fighters, they're, they're putting on the Vaseline, you know, they're getting checked out by the ref, right? What if they were standing on a scale-

    2. JR

      Hmm.

    3. ST

... at that point so that it was transparent? You could actually know the, compared to what they weighed in at and then when they actually step into the octagon for, for the fight.

    4. JR

They do that for some boxing matches. They'll let you know, like, what the guy's weighing when he steps into the ring. Yeah, I mean-... it's a bullshit thing. It's basically sanctioned cheating. It really is, but everybody does it, but Izzy barely does it.

    5. ST

      Well, right.

    6. JR

You know, when Izzy went up to fight-

    7. ST

      He was a v- cage.

    8. JR

... Jan Blachowicz at light heavyweight-

    9. ST

      Right.

    10. JR

      ... he weighed 194.

    11. ST

      Right.

    12. JR

      Which is crazy-

    13. ST

      For s-

    14. JR

... because Blachowicz is a giant light heavyweight. I mean, Blachowicz is a big, powerful guy-

    15. ST

      Right.

    16. JR

... at light heavyweight, and Izzy didn't gain any weight.

    17. ST

Right, because Izzy figured that if he put on a bunch of weight to go up a weight class that he might lose his speed.

    18. JR

Well, you- you also have muscles that need oxygen, and you might lose some of your endurance, and a big part of his game is not just speed, it's movement.

    19. ST

      Right.

    20. JR

And you don't want to have a smaller gas tank-

    21. ST

      Right.

    22. JR

... you know, when you're fighting a guy who's just a murderous power striker like Blachowicz is.

    23. ST

      Right.

    24. JR

Because Blachowicz puts people in another dimension, man. That motherfucker hits so hard. The last thing you want to do is, like, be standing in front of that guy.

    25. ST

Right. Um, of course the story of the Blachowicz fight was, was all wrestling.

    26. JR

      Yeah. Yeah.

    27. ST

That he, he held him down, and so when, when Pereira came in weighing what looked like 220 pounds, I thought-

    28. JR

He looks like a light heavyweight. He really does.

    29. ST

Right. And then the, the, like, I, I, I was wondering, "Oh, well are we going to see him, like, hold Izzy down the way Blachowicz did?"

    30. JR

Yeah, but that's not his style.

  4. 15:5118:53

Kickboxing’s visibility problem and combat sports brain trauma (gloves, range, CTE)

    1. ST

Well, with kickboxing, like, uh, I mean, I- I'm not really familiar with where to even watch kickboxing.

    2. JR

Glory, um, you got to go to the g- Glory has, uh, most of their shows are on the web, and you could go to, uh, I think it's, uh, Fight... I think it's F-I-T-E.com is, uh, where, or it's g- it's glorykickboxing.com. There's a link to it, and you can stream it, and what I usually do is I, I get it on my phone, and then I use the Apple app, and I stream it-

    3. ST

      Uh-huh.

    4. JR

... to my television through Apple TV.

    5. ST

Right. Does that mean that there's not, like, a ton of money for kickboxing? (laughs)

    6. JR

There's not as much money in kickboxing, no. Glory is the biggest organization for kickboxing in the world, and they put on phenomenal fights, and I'm a, I'm a giant fan of the organization. But it's weird to me that boxing got so popular in the United States and around the world and MMA got so popular in the United States and around the world, but kickboxing never really caught on here.

    7. ST

      Yeah.

    8. JR

It doesn't make any sense because it's so exciting. When you watch guys that are, like, high lev- like Cedric Doumbé or Alex Pereira or Vakhitov, these fucking world-class kickboxers are so exciting. It's not like a bad product. The product-

    9. ST

      Right.

    10. JR

      ... is sensational.

    11. ST

What, um, we, we see people dying in boxing.

    12. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    13. ST

And, and we don't see people dying in MMA.

    14. JR

      Knock on wood.

    15. ST

Right. Um, I have a theory about that, that, like, that, that it's about the gloves, because, like, if you take football, back in the day when they had, uh, like, just the little leather helmet.

    16. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    17. ST

Like, back then, like, people wou- wouldn't hit their head so much because they had, like, a little fucking leather helmet on, so, like, there w- But then now in, in modern football, you've got this, this crazy helmet that, that lets you, uh, bash your head around with seeming impunity.

    18. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    19. ST

And because of that, people are hitting their head so much more, and as a result, they've got all this CTE going on. And-

    20. JR

Well, that's a real theory shared by other people as well.

    21. ST

      Right.

    22. JR

      You know?

    23. ST

So yeah, with boxing, the, these humongous gloves, it's like, oh, you can, you know, throw your, your fists around with impunity, but, but then...... that, that, that's why I think-

    24. JR

Yeah, well it's the th- uh, you know, there's a lot of thought to that. There's also, there's only one option, and that option is to hi- to punch.

    25. ST

      Right.

    26. JR

Like, you can't clinch, you can't take people down, you can't kick and stay on the outside. You, you have to stay inside a boxing range because that's the only sport you're playing. There's, there's a lot of thought to that, about the big gloves too, is that there's a lot more thudding, you know?

    27. ST

      Right.

    28. JR

And the thing that people don't understand about head injuries is that, like, CTE in particular, you don't have to get knocked unconscious to get it.

    29. ST

      Right. Sure, sure.

    30. JR

It's, uh, repeated small blows can give you CTE. In fact, there are some soccer players that get CTE.

  5. 18:5322:47

Steve-O’s pre-sobriety tour: beer-can head bashings and CTE genetics

    1. ST

Right. I, uh, when, when I think about that, I, uh, (laughs) the ... Way back when, before I got sober, I had this tour, the, it was called the Don't Try This At Home Tour. And I would promote every show by saying, "I will be drunk and on drugs, or your money back." (laughs)

    2. JR

      (laughs)

    3. ST

Like, and I meant it. And, and, and you, you watched me get-

    4. JR

      What year was this?

    5. ST

That, it started in 2001, and, and I ran that till, like, 2005. And, um, and, and, uh, I mean, you would just watch me get completely hammered on stage, like pounding tequila and shit. When I came out on stage, I, I would walk out with, like, a suitcase of, of, uh, Budweiser cans, and I'd toss them out to the crowd. And, and I would take the can, and I would start out with one, and, and I would just bash my head with it until the can exploded, and I'd be particularly p- proud if the can broke into two d- separate pieces. And after I broke the one can, then I would take out two cans, one in each hand, and go back and forth, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba, and, and break both of them. Um, so I would, every show, I would break three beers over my head, and, uh, I would do that, like, every night.

    6. JR

      Oh my God.

    7. ST

And, and, and, and, and that, that like, what I, what I understand about the CTE phenomenon is that, you're absolutely right, it's not about how hard you get hit. It's, it's, it's the, the accumulation of lots of little hits, and that's why football-

    8. JR

      Yeah.

    9. ST

      ... is the biggest one.

    10. JR

Did you suffer anything from that?

    11. ST

Oh, dude, the, the worst part was, the n- then, like, after I got sober, I started doing stand-up. Like, initially, there, there was a period where I would do it with sparkling water cans. (laughs)

    12. JR

And you were doing it still?

    13. ST

And did some, did some, but this s-

    14. JR

You were still beating yourself in the head?

    15. ST

(laughs) I d- I did it for a little while. A- and, uh, and it, and-

    16. JR

How many times do you think you've beaten yourself in the head? How many shows? If you had to count them all up?

    17. ST

      Uh, hundreds. (laughs)

    18. JR

      Hundreds? Oh my God.

    19. ST

Right. Uh, and, I mean, as, as far as I can tell, uh, I, I'm in pretty good shape. But Tony Hawk told me one time, he, uh, he says that, um, that he found out, uh, with regard to CTE, that there's, uh, a gene which, which will make you predisposed to Alzheimer's disease.

    20. JR

      APOE e4, yeah.

    21. ST

Yeah, and if you have that gene, then you're, you're very much at risk for CTE.

    22. JR

      Yeah.

    23. ST

But if you don't have that gene, you're considerably less at risk.

    24. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    25. ST

And he said that when he found that out, he went and got the test, and, and determined that he did not have that gene.

    26. JR

      Hmm.

    27. ST

And, and, and, and when I heard that, like, I kinda chewed on it for a while. I ended up, like, uh, like, it was, it was kind- ki- kind of nagging at me, and I ended up, like, reaching back out to Tony. I said, "Hey, Tony, about that test. Like, what was your f- what was your plan if you did have the gene?" (laughs) "You, you can't un-hit yourself in the head."

    28. JR

      Right. Right.

    29. ST

You know? And he's like, "Oh, well, I didn't have a plan." I'm like, "Well-"

    30. JR

(laughs) Well, how can you have a plan after the fact, right?

  6. 22:4727:03

The cauliflower ear quest: UFC legends try to wreck Steve-O’s ear (and still fail)

    1. ST

It was actually when I was, uh, the, the, d- and I was trying to get cauliflower ear as like, as part of, part of, uh, my, my multimedia comedy.

    2. JR

      (laughs)

    3. ST

And I remember telling you too, that I was like, "I'm a- I'm gonna do a, a crazy bit," and I tried to get cauliflower ear. And I remember you telling me that, uh, you were like, "Nope, I don't support that." You said, "I think the cauliflower ear is something that should be earned," (laughs) you know? Like, y- And, uh, I remember thinking, "Oh, well, like ..." And I, and I, I became buddies with Chuck Liddell. And, uh, Chuck Liddell and I got together. We made the fucking funniest, craziest video, like, uh, of him trying to get, like ... I, I, I, I, I, I've, I've, I got a, I made this helmet that, like, I'd, I divi- designed this helmet that left my ears sticking out to protect my head from, like, headshots, a little bit, and my ears sticking out. And, and I got Chuck Liddell fucking sets, uh, a, a golf ball on my ear, and fucking whacks it off with a golf club.

    4. JR

      Oh, no.

    5. ST

      (laughs)

    6. JR

      Did you get cauliflower ear?

    7. ST

Th- no. Th- then, um, (laughs) th- that... We, we'd spent two days with Chuck trying to do it, and, and it just didn't work. Then I got together with Ronda Rousey, and, and was on the mats with her, and she's like, her and Travis just, like, roughing up my ear all day long.... and, and, and, and, uh, and they're looking at my ear, they're like, "Dude, we got it. That's it." You know, "We got it." And then it just went away. Then I got together with Jorge Masvidal. He put his, um, his, uh, BMF belt over my ear and he's just, like, punching it-

    8. JR

      Oh, Jesus.

    9. ST

... against a, a door and, uh, and he's like, "Dude, that's it. Right there, man. That's Cauliflower. We got it."

    10. JR

      Still no?

    11. ST

And it didn't... And it didn't... Then I got together with Jon Jones. (laughs)

    12. JR

      Oh my God.

    13. ST

I had, like, the who's who of the u-

    14. JR

You are such a glutton for punishment.

    15. ST

I had the who's who of the UFC Hall of Fame, like, give their best shot and everybody said, "Dude, we got it." And then it didn't work. Dude, Jon Jones blasted my ear into oblivion, like-

    16. JR

      Oh.

    17. ST

... with a... (laughs) He took a, what at the time was his current light heavyweight belt and, like... Oh yeah, there we go.

    18. JR

      Oh, Jesus Christ.

    19. ST

      (laughs)

    20. JR

      And he's hammering your ear?

    21. ST

      Dude-

    22. JR

      Oh my God.

    23. ST

... he, he, he, he's so upsettingly overdid it that my ear got, got blasted apart. Uh-

    24. JR

And you still didn't get Cauliflower?

    25. ST

      Dude-

    26. JR

      Oh God. It's so bloody.

    27. ST

      (laughs)

    28. JR

Oh my God, dude. What the fuck?

    29. ST

Yeah. W- We're, we're not putting that on the good-

    30. JR

Did you get that... You just chipped it off? You didn't get stitched up?

  7. 27:0332:25

Grappling horror stories: crucifix control, Kimuras, and why you must tap

    1. ST

You don't see it that... Like, you never see it. When, when, when both of, of a fighter's arms are absolutely fucking just out of the equation, you know? Like-

    2. JR

Jon Jones done that to people. Uh, that was Roy Nelson used to do to people all the time. It was, uh, Big Country, he... That was his move, he'd get people in a crucifix. Look, a crucifix is a terrible position to be in.

    3. ST

      Yeah.

    4. JR

Have you ever been stuck there before?

    5. ST

      By Holly Holm. (laughs)

    6. JR

Oh, really? Oh, that's hilarious. You can't get out of it. It's so hard to get out of it.

    7. ST

      Yeah.

    8. JR

Like, you have to be elite to get out of that. There's a few techniques that you could do to get out of that. The key is, you have to get an arm free. You must. You, you... Like, first of all, you have to really do your best to never let that arm get trapped like that, but if you're fighting a superior grappler and you get caught like that... And you saw, um, in a way, um, that's how Zhang Weili, uh, tapped out Carla Esparza, she started off with a crucifix. She started out with a crucifix on her back and then twisted to the rear naked choke and got the choke from that position. It's a terrible position because legs are so much stronger. You know, like, when your legs are trapping that arm, that arm's fucked, right? And then the head pins down and traps the other one, and then you're just... It's just head and fist and elbows-

    9. ST

      Right.

    10. JR

      ... in your face.

    11. ST

      Yeah.

    12. JR

And you just get fucking noogied to death.

    13. ST

Dude. Yeah. I, I was at, uh, Jackson Wink with Holly Holm and, uh, she took my arms away from me and just showed me what she could do, like-

    14. JR

      Oh, Jesus.

    15. ST

      She didn't do it, but-

    16. JR

      No.

    17. ST

She was just like... And then with the elbow.

    18. JR

Did that make you wanna train? Did it make you wanna learn how to not-

    19. ST

      No. (laughs)

    20. JR

... be in that situation? No, not at all? Nothing?

    21. ST

      No, dude.

    22. JR

If a girl did that to me, I'd be, like, so upset. I'd be like, "I need to learn how to fight. Fuck this."

    23. ST

      (laughs)

    24. JR

      That's so humiliating.

    25. ST

Yeah. I, I, I didn't see it that way. I felt like it was kind of an honor, you know? Hot-

    26. JR

Well, I get it. Yeah, I mean, she's a world champion.

    27. ST

      Yeah, she's, she's so rad.

    28. JR

      She's a beast.

    29. ST

      She's such a, such a wonderful person.

    30. JR

      Oh, she's so sweet.

  8. 32:2542:37

Live odds, gambling addiction, and Steve-O’s ‘thoroughbred’ addiction pedigree

    1. ST

I, I got another, um, MMA question. Um, li- uh, live odds. At the beginning of, of, uh, round two, round three-

    2. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    3. ST

... the, like, they, they show the, the odds before the fight.

    4. JR

      Yeah.

    5. ST

Like, like, DC told me he thought that that could be a good alternative to open scoring, if they just showed the, the live odds at the... I think as a fan, I would love to know like how the odds are. Did, did uniform always have what the, the live odds are going into each new round?

    6. JR

It's not bad. I mean, it, it definitely encourages gambling, which I support. I just, uh, I think gambling's fun. You know, I, I support gambling like I support drinking. I, I get that some people can't drink.

    7. ST

      Right.

    8. JR

I get that some people can't gamble. I do get, I've, look, I've known a lot of people that were addicted to gambling.

    9. ST

      (coughs)

    10. JR

And it's a, a crazy addiction, because... Did you ever see that, um, Adam Sandler movie?

    11. ST

      Yes, The Uncut Gems.

    12. JR

      Amazing.

    13. ST

      Unbelievably disturbing.

    14. JR

      So good.

    15. ST

      Unbelievably good.

    16. JR

And such a perfect representation of a gambling addict.

    17. ST

      Yeah.

    18. JR

They can't fucking... They need that fucking juice. They need it. They need that next bet. They need, "Come on, come on. Yes!"

    19. ST

      (laughs)

    20. JR

When they win, they go fucking crazy. I mean, it's, it's a real problem for some people.

    21. ST

      Right.

    22. JR

Gambling is a... They ruin everything in their life. It's a real problem for some people. But I support it because I feel like you need to have control over your life. And if you don't have control over your life, get control over your life. And if gambling is stopping you from having control over your life, don't make gambling illegal, just you don't gamble.

    23. ST

      I agree.

    24. JR

      Get your life in order.

    25. ST

Yeah, but like, uh, as a, an alcoholic, drug addict, you know, I was... I'm not mad at drugs and alcohol, I just can't have it.

    26. JR

Yeah. Do you think that you could if you had a different life, could've enjoyed drinking and maybe a little drugs in moderation?

    27. ST

      No. I-

    28. JR

No, you just had that personality.

    29. ST

I, I have it in my f- I'm fucking pedigree, dude.

    30. JR

      (laughs)

  9. 42:371:01:18

Steroids, TRT, opioids, and the hidden dangers of common painkillers

    1. ST

Yeah, the, I just watched that Killer Sally show on Netflix.

    2. JR

      What's that?

    3. ST

      It's, uh...

    4. JR

Oh, that's a woman bodybuilder, right?

    5. ST

Woman bodybuilder but she was married to, uh, this guy Ray McNeil, who she ultimately shot. (laughs)

    6. JR

      Oh, Jesus.

    7. ST

Yeah. It's, uh, it's one of these, like, true crime type situations.

    8. JR

      Oh.

    9. ST

And it's pretty fascinating. It's just like a three-part. But yeah, they, they get pretty heavily into the whole bodybuilding culture and, yeah.

    10. JR

That fa- is a thing that happens to a woman when she starts taking steroids, where she gets that manly look in her face? That creeps me the fuck out.

    11. ST

      (laughs)

    12. JR

You know, there's like, go to the original picture that you posted up, Jamie. The original one. No, the, right there. Yeah. Look at her face on the left. See how she got like, there's, there's like a manliness to her. It's like, it's very hard to describe, like what, what makes it manly? I don't know. But it's not just that she has giant traps and big fucking shoulders and chest muscles.

    13. ST

      Right.

    14. JR

But it's also like her face has a manly quality. Like the one on the right, that picture on the right where that dude has his arm around her.

    15. ST

      Yeah.

    16. JR

Look, is that the guy she killed?

    17. ST

      Yep.

    18. JR

      Oh, sorry buddy.

    19. ST

      (laughs)

    20. JR

But look at her face there, she's got like a manly face. That's very manly.

    21. ST

      It's super manly, yeah.

    22. JR

      Right? There's something that happens.

    23. ST

Dude, she, she fucking went, went into the bedroom, fucking came out with a shotgun, fucking smoked the dude and then went back into the bedroom, got another shell and reloaded it, came out and shot him in the face.

    24. JR

      Oh, Jesus Christ.

    25. ST

      (laughs)

    26. JR

What did he do to her? Was it an abusive relationship?

    27. ST

They, they, uh, yeah, there was a lot of, uh, accusations of, of, uh-

    28. JR

      Domestic violence?

    29. ST

... domestic violence, yeah. But still.

    30. JR

      Well...

  10. 1:01:181:15:49

Extreme risk, death on mountains, and living deliberately with mortality in mind

    1. ST

Yeah. I saw, um... I remember see- seeing you, uh, r- react to, like, some- some of these crazy kids that are, like, climbing on skyscrapers and-

    2. JR

      Ugh.

    3. ST

      ... you know?

    4. JR

      Yeah.

    5. ST

And, uh, I remem- I remember you having, like, a really pretty, like, visceral reaction to that, like, "No, like, don't do that. I don't-"

    6. JR

      Mm.

    7. ST

... "I don't like it. I don't approve." And I just thought to myself, like, uh, I disagree. Uh, uh, like, I- I disagree because I think that, um, that in- in- in most cases with these kids, they- they just know their abilities.

    8. JR

Oh, they definitely do, but also they fall and they die, and that's a crazy way to die.

    9. ST

      Okay. The-

    10. JR

      Falling off a skyscraper.

    11. ST

      Yeah, um-

    12. JR

      Landing on a baby carriage.

    13. ST

Uh, I- I understood, but I remember, like, there's, like, one- one of these kids... 'Cause- 'cause I had a- a really-

    14. JR

      Don't do it, Jamie.

    15. ST

      (laughs)

    16. JR

You son of a bitch. Jesus Christ, this guy's barefoot, climbing a fucking building.

    17. ST

      Right.

    18. JR

Woo, that is so wild that people do that shit.

    19. ST

Uh-huh. Yeah, you know, like, uh...

    20. JR

Mm, don't do it, Jamie. Don't make me want... My hands are sweating. Feel my hand. Feel my hand.

    21. ST

      (laughs) Yeah.

    22. JR

Feel my hand. How sweaty is that?

    23. ST

And- and- and I- I'll take this off of you because, um, when- when, uh, I- I, like, linked up with- with some of these kids that do all this fucking crazy parkour shit, like from building to building, and, um, I reposted on my Instagram some kid doing, like, some, like, fuck... It was like he jumped off one building and then landed on the next building, like, with-

    24. JR

      Ah.

    25. ST

... by his fingers. And, um, people in the comments were like, just like, "Oh, this fucking stupid kid's fuckin' gonna die." Like, fr... A- a- and I was kind of incensed and- and I went on, uh, my story and I was like, "Why is it that, uh, you know, these kids are catching such fucking heat, but then this other fucking guy wins an Oscar?" (laughs) With the fucking free solo. Like, what's the difference?

    26. JR

      Well, that's crazy too.

    27. ST

      I mean, th- that's- yeah.

    28. JR

I mean, uh, Alex has been on, uh, the podcast a few times.

    29. ST

      Sure.

    30. JR

And I- I admire his ability to do that, but also in talking to Gabor Mate, he was explaining that most likely what's going on is those people don't feel normal life the same way-

  11. 1:15:491:28:32

Comedy gatekeeping, scarcity vs. abundance, and why beginners deserve respect

    1. ST

(clears throat) Yeah, super crazy. So, dude, I wa- I wa- I gotta tell you about, about, uh, how I wrote about you in my, my new book.

    2. JR

      You did?

    3. ST

Yeah, I did. Like, uh, just as an example, where I was talking about how I got into stand-up, and there, uh, w- certain people w- w- were not, like, particularly supportive. (laughs) You know?

    4. JR

      Oh.

    5. ST

There's like a... L- I- I made an example about how I went on M- Marc Maron's podcast to, uh, promote my first special, and, and there I was, and, and, and, and he says, "You know, I gotta admit, like, I'm kind of a purist when it comes to stand-up, and, uh, when I saw that you were doing stand-up, I didn't like it." You know? Like, uh, and, and I remember thinking kind of like, like, "Why is he saying this?" And he's like-

    6. JR

You said the same thing to me.

    7. ST

      Right?

    8. JR

      ... when I first started doing stand-up.

    9. ST

      Right, like, uh-

    10. JR

Fuck off. Like, stand-up is an art form. Anyone can-

    11. ST

      Sure.

    12. JR

      ... do an art form.

    13. ST

Sure. A- and, um, and, and, and as I kind of a- like broke this down in my book, sort of, I had, I, I said that I, I really believe that the... That's an, uh, an example of somebody operating with a mentality of scarcity.

    14. JR

      Yeah.

    15. ST

Where, like, the idea is that, that i- in reality these people are concerned that if Steve-O comes into stand-up and, and has success that that means that there is going to be less on the table from them- it's gonna take away from them, you know? There, there's not enough to go around, and, and that, that this i- that this is their way of, um, dealing with what they perceive as a threat. And that's operating with a mentality of scarcity. And then there's people like Joe Rogan who operate with a mentality of abundance, where you're perfectly comfortable that there is enough to go around, and s- you're not threatened by anything, and you actually encourage people to get into it. And, uh, I just had to... You know, I'm so fucking grateful for that. You know? Yeah.

    16. JR

For, for the way that you supported me, for the way that you support everybody, and that you just want there to be more funny shit in the world. Well, thank you, but I, I think... I encourage people to try things.

    17. ST

      Yeah.

    18. JR

And look, the idea that stand... Look, everyone talks. Stand-up is talking and being funny while you're talking.
