    2. NA

The Joe Rogan Experience. Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day. (rock music) What's up?

    3. DP

      Hello, hello, hello.

    4. JR

What's going on? Pleasure to meet you guys.

    5. DP

Nice to meet you too. Oh my God, we're live.

    6. JR

Int- ladies and gentlemen. Introduce yourselves to everybody.

    7. DP

(clears throat) Uh, I'm Danny Philippou. That's my clone, Michael. Uh-

    8. JR

      You guys are not clones.

    9. DP

Oh, well, no. Yeah, there's a big difference, isn't there? Is there? Danny acts like we look s- well, we're identical twins, mirror image twins. Uh- yeah. Michael's the dumb twin, the unreliable twin. Uh- Danny's the arrogant twin. I wouldn't say, uh- Uh, but ladies and gentlemen, we're here on the Joe Rogan Experience. I'm so, uh, like, yeah, like, uh- It's very surreal. (laughs) ... I'm fanboying, yeah.

    10. JR

      (laughs)

    11. DP

We got Young Jamie over there. We might pull some things up and we're gonna talk about DMT and elk meat.

    12. JR

      (splurts water)

    13. DP

      (laughs)

    14. JR

Did you guys prepare for this?

    15. DP

      No. (laughs)

    16. JR

      (laughs)

    17. DP

Yeah, we were writing last night. Yeah, yeah, yeah. (laughs) I don't know, yeah. Michael was like, "We're gonna be at the Joe Rogan podcast." And all of your guests are really, um, smart. I feel like people would be dumb about listening to us.

    18. JR

There's a lot of dumb ones too. Don't worry about it.

    19. DP

      Okay. (laughs)

    20. JR

      (laughs)

    21. DP

That'll- that'll be the playlist we're in. We-

    22. JR

So, h- how- tell me about you guys, the- the background. First of all, how did it come that you made that movie?

    23. DP

Well, uh, we've always wanted to make films, uh, ever since we were, like, little kids.

    24. JR

Is that your first, like, real film?

    25. DP

Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was our first proper production, yeah. We have- we have-

    26. JR

      That fucking movie was awesome.

    27. DP

Uh, it was so weird that you posted about it. How did you hear about it?

    28. JR

I was just flipping through, uh, I think I was just flipping through, like, the current movies on Apple.

    29. DP

      Okay.

    30. JR

      On Apple TV.

  2. 15:0030:00

    Oh, really? …

    1. DP

every, there's, like, five categories you have to do. I mean, it takes a few years. But I was driving on, like, I was production running for a TV show and I met a stunt guy, Judd Wild, and, um, we just, like, got along 'cause I was, like, I was interested in stunts. Like, our, we'd been doing stunts in, since we were little kids. And, um, I showed him some of our old videos, like, pre-YouTube, and then, uh, he's like, "Dude, you should get accredited." Uh, and then he helped me get my accreditation. I was, like, doing some editing for him, like, some stuff. And then for our videos, we would get him and we'd create, uh, like, we were introduced to the stunt world through Judd. And, like, we would work, we've worked with over 100 performers now and, like, special effects guys. And like, and we would create different, like, our videos on YouTube, we'd always go, like, with a new, uh, like, "Oh, how do we do, like, a sinking set where we can fire and the set's sinking and filling with water?" Or, "How do we do this, this rig, this stunt rig?" Um, and we'd, like, innovate and, like, create different things. So we're looking forward to doing a, an action movie 'cause we have a cool team. We're attached right now to the Street Fighter movie.

    2. JR

      Oh, really?

    3. DP

Uh, yeah, for the Capcom video game. And we're gonna-

    4. JR

Can I, hold on. Do you have video of you getting hit by a car?

    5. NA

      I think I do, yeah.

    6. JR

      Let me see this.

    7. DP

It, wait, 'cause the thing at the-

    8. NA

      It's called ex-

    9. JR

      Here we go.

    10. DP

      No, no, no.

    11. NA

      Oh.

    12. DP

This is a bad one. Wait.

    13. JR

No, no, no. Let me see this one.

    14. NA

      No, this one's fine.

    15. DP

I mean, let me see which one.

    16. NA

You, you can tell me a better one after this, but this one's fine.

    17. DP

      Okay.

    18. JR

      Let's see this one.

    19. NA

This is not him. The next one will be him.

    20. DP

Yeah, so this is, uh, with a stunt performer seeing who could get hit faster. It's not faster. (instrumental music plays) (car crumpling) Oh, shit. (laughs) This whole window's fucking coming through.

    21. NA

      Oh, Jesus.

    22. DP

      Ugh.

    23. NA

      Yeah, we're done.

    24. JR

      Dude.

    25. DP

(laughs) If, if you go to, uh, I might have sent you a link.

    26. JR

What the fuck? (laughs) What the fuck? (laughs)

    27. DP

That was at, no, but wait. If there's, uh- It's called Extreme Deaths? Can I send you a link?

    28. NA

      Extreme what?

    29. DP

      It's, uh, it's, I've got one that's unlisted. I can send you a link.

    30. NA

Uh, if you have it on your phone, you can send it to me.

  3. 30:0045:00

    So when you're creating…

    1. DP

of like how people... If you see someone drunk, like you're with a friend and they're drunk, like you find it funny, like someone's drunk and that, but if they're like, say their family's religious, I remember a friend's family who was very religious, they came and he was like drunk in his underwear vomiting and we thought it was funny. And then I looked over and his mom was crying because like she was like, you know, that's not her perception of it as well. It's like that's a, that's what it sounds like a devil and his son or something, like he was like so like fucked up. And it was, that, that was like sticking as well. It's like just different interpretations of what's going on, so the kids are having fun with it, but there's that kind of undertone of the reality of it is very different to the way that they're perceiving it.

    2. JR

So when you're creating something like this, like when you're creating the script and the storyline...... do you guys disagree with direction? Is it, uh, how collaborative is it?

    3. DP

Well, I can't ever write with Michael. We'll just butt heads too much and we'll start fighting. So, my, my co-writer Bill Hinzman, him and I will work on stuff together, and then when we've got a draft, we'll present it to Michael. Yeah. Then he just starts fucking tearing into it, saying it's boring and it's shit. I- i- if you, like, 'cause when you're like creating like the story and stuff, if there's no, like, set ending, I'll have ideas and Danny will as well, so it'll kinda be in two different directions. Like, it could get yanked in two different directions. But if Danny does, like, 'cause we write scripts separately, then there's like the outline. It's like, oh, okay, I know what you're going for and then add notes that way, as opposed to, like, trying to veer into a different thing.

    4. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    5. DP

Yeah. Um- And then also, writing's so personal and you're exploring really personal themes, and Michael and I just don't get that deep and personal with each other. Even though we're brothers, we find that really awkward, where we just don't have that sort of relationship.

    6. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    7. DP

We have more of a working relationship as opposed to- And we're just, well, it's like, it's our whole lives is filming and stuff, so there's, but there's, like we don't go, "Oh, let's go hang out at a," whatever, like, you know, it's... We're always traveling together and stuff, but we don't, "Oh, let's do this together." It's always film related or video related.

    8. JR

And so are you, like, at the end of it, before you start filming, do you guys have to get approval on the final script? Is it like-

    9. DP

      Yeah, yeah.

    10. JR

... d- did they have to give you the green light? Like, how, what is the process between you come up with a concept, creating a script, them giving- Okay, we're back.

    11. DP

So do we, like, continue the sentence-

    12. JR

      (clears throat)

    13. DP

... like it just happened or do we-

    14. JR

No. Where were we? Do you remember where we were?

    15. DP

We talked- I tracked something down for you. This is one of the drugs I took.

    16. JR

      What is it?

    17. DP

      Well, I can't-

    18. JR

      Okay.

    19. DP

      Can you pronounce that?

    20. JR

      Ah. No. (laughs)

    21. DP

      (laughs) (laughs)

    22. JR

      Yeah, this-

    23. NA

Can you spell it? I'll try to look it up.

    24. JR

Well, it says, "Phase one single randomized open label study to assess the pharmaceutical..." wow, I don't even know what this word is. "Pharmacokinetics safety and toler- and tolerability of ABP-787 deuterated..." Oh, boy.

    25. DP

      (laughs) This, uh-

    26. JR

      "... dextromethorphan hydrobromide quinide sulfate."

    27. DP

Did you get that one, Jimmy?

    28. JR

      "And healthy volunteers."

    29. DP

Well, this is what... So I- I thought I was never listening, but I was listening. I just didn't know what the fuck they were saying.

    30. JR

      Yeah.

  4. 45:0057:53

    So whe- …

    1. DP

    2. JR

      So whe-

    3. DP

      But it was-

    4. JR

How long did it take? Was it a slow build? How long did it take before it hit, like, 90 million? Was it like ...

    5. DP

I think, it's been in- It's been in cinemas for a while now. It, it still hasn't come- Y- it's still in cinemas right now.

    6. JR

      Really?

    7. DP

Playing in some theaters, yeah. I think they, they ... I think every week, they, like, drop it by half, the amount of theaters that it plays in.

    8. JR

      Oh.

    9. DP

Um, and, and the way they promoted it was, like ... And I think A24 does more, like ... Again, this whole world, like, making stuff where that's our, like, whole lives. But the stuff after, all this stuff, I have no idea what ... Like, this is such a new process for us, like marketing and release-

    10. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    11. DP

... and all that stuff. So, I, I think the way that they do it is- If you say bola, we got a publicist. Sorry, our publicist doesn't speak- (laughs) Oh, man. It was the first time we had, like, you know ... Like, our schedules now ... It's good that we have, like, uh, management now that like s- gives us a schedule 'cause we have no idea what's happening every second. But yeah, like, w- uh, in a publicist, you got a new thing. There's, like, a list of, like, 30 interviews that you're doing that day. And then, like, you just got to get some control. There was ... It was, it was a lot of word-of-mouth screenings. And- Yeah, they didn't do, like- Yeah. ... billboards and things like that. That wasn't the way that they promote. Yeah. They did, like, uh, showing the movie to people that they think would talk about it, and then, like, kinda spread that way, I guess. It was a word-of-mouth campaign. Yeah, word-of-mouth campaign. Yeah.

    12. JR

So it just sort of slowly kept going?

    13. DP

Yeah. 'Cause we've been promoting it since Sundance 'cause we got into Sundance, which we did that whole thing there. Then in February, we were in Berlin Film Festival. There's a bit more promo there. And then March, we're in South By Southwest here in Texas. And so, all those screenings just came word-of-mouth. And then they would just- Yeah. ... and then out to live

    14. NA

      We put up with it.

    15. DP

And then, like, I guess it, it did really good in South America, uh, like Mexico, Peru, like, all those places. And they went hard on the marketing. There's a company called Diamond Films. They do i- They made, like, a giant hand, and they were parading it through the street. Yeah. (laughs) It was so fucking awesome. I mean, I was like, "Man, I wanna go over there." Like, "I wanna get a picture," like. They had, like, a whole, like ... A bus stop where it was, like, four bus stops with, like, hands in between them, like, all in the road for the film.

    16. JR

      Oh.

    17. DP

Big walls of it. So cool, man. Yeah, Me- Very different to the- ... Mexico went hard. They went, yeah. Yeah, I was like, "Man, next time ..." 'Cause we're gonna do a sequel. Mexico, yeah.

    18. JR

You're gonna do a sequel now?

    19. DP

Yeah. I, I ... Even when you're writing something like that, you get so caught up in the world and with the characters, you can't help but start writing scenes for a sequel. And so, I had ideas for it, and I told A24, I said, "If it's successful up, I would be so down to do a sequel." So I just sort of planted the seed. In every Q&A that we did in these, like, word-of-mouth screenings, I was like, "You know, A24 should give us a ..." I was always just s- sort of hinting, saying that I would do it if they wanted to do it.

    20. JR

That's a big thing now with horror movies, where they have all these spinoffs. Like, look at The Conjuring.

    21. DP

      Oh, it's-

    22. JR

How many movies do they have off of that?

    23. DP

Yeah, yeah. Crazy, there's a whole universe. It's a whole franchise.

    24. JR

Yeah, there's a whole Conjuring universe.

    25. DP

Yeah. Yeah. Uh, it does help solidify things in pop culture if you look at Friday the 13th, you know, with Jason or, or Freddy. If it was just one film- Yes, but there's a two ... It depends, like, if ... At what point does it become, like, a money grab, I guess, is, like, a thing where it's ...

    26. JR

Well, when you don't wanna do it anymore.

    27. DP

      Yeah. Yeah.

    28. JR

When you're just doing it for the money.

    29. DP

Or a cool thing, I think, would be if people wanted to ...'cause they're talking about ... If, if you ... Like, imagine a movie where we get a cool, talented, like, director, like Africa, writer-director. And then they do, like, a version of that world, like, in a, in a, in-

    30. JR

      Mm, yeah.
