Road life vs. “home base” in LA (and zero responsibilities)

    1. NA

(drumming) Joe Rogan podcast, check it out.

    2. The Joe Rogan Experience.

    3. JR

Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day. (rock music) Hello, Eleanor.

    4. EK

      Great deep breath.

    5. JR

      How are you?

    6. EK

      I really took that in.

    7. JR

What's going on, what's cracking, kid?

    8. EK

Nothing, I'm excited to be here.

    9. JR

      We're excited to have you.

    10. EK

      Whoo-hoo.

    11. JR

      How's LA treating you?

    12. EK

      LA's good.

    13. JR

      (laughs)

    14. EK

Uh, I mean, I'll be honest, I haven't been there a lot. After I filmed my special, I just... uh, I mean, I'm on the road so much.

    15. JR

      Right.

    16. EK

So, which is good, and then I get to go to Philly. In between, I hang out with my mom. So, all... in between gigs, I'll just hang out at my mom's instead of going back to Ph- uh, LA. But I feel like I haven't been... yeah, I think I was there for five days last week.

    17. JR

Yeah, it becomes, when you do the road all the time, your house sorta just becomes some stop.

    18. EK

Yeah, but I have no responsibility whatsoever.

    19. JR

      Yeah.

    20. EK

      Like, I don't have a da- I don't have a plant. I have nothing, like so...

    21. JR

      Come on, Megs.

    22. EK

      (laughs)

    23. JR

What a free, what a free existence you've carved out for yourself.

    24. EK

      (laughs) What an asshole. (laughs)

    25. JR

      (laughs)

    26. EK

      So selfish.

    27. JR

Isn't... it's funny, because people think about it that way, like you have to have things you're responsible for.

    28. EK

      Sure.

    29. JR

      Otherwise, you're a bad person.

  2. 1:094:34

Growing up in a 10-kid household: pregnancies, personalities, and a wild nurse story

    1. EK

Yeah, I t- I always tell my mom I'm living her... what she would wanna, wanted to do had she not had 10 children. (laughs)

    2. JR

      Mm. 10 children.

    3. EK

      Yeah, good times.

    4. JR

      Wow, isn't that crazy?

    5. EK

      Keep it up, lady.

    6. JR

(laughs) 10 kids is so bonkers.

    7. EK

      Who does that?

    8. JR

T- how about on the ninth one? You're like, "One more." (laughs)

    9. EK

      Her worst pregnancy.

    10. JR

      The ninth one?

    11. EK

The ninth one, longest, uh, delivery. My little brother, Bobby.

    12. JR

      Yeah?

    13. EK

She said that's how lazy he was, he wouldn't come out.

    14. JR

      (laughs)

    15. EK

He's so lazy. (laughs) She said he was hanging on for dear life. I'm like, "Why?" And she said, "Because he's lazy."

    16. JR

It'd be an interesting study to have 10 kids and just to see, like, what makes them come out different.

    17. EK

      Right.

    18. JR

'Cause they're, they're a fucking di- this is one thing, like, having children, seeing them from babies, you realize, like, oh, they're different right out of the box.

    19. EK

      Yeah. And-

    20. JR

Like, it has zero to do with, like, what you tell them, "This is what you should do." Like, it... a lot of them is just how they come from the factory.

    21. EK

Exactly. And y- you always think, like, w- I know there's genetic stuff, like, there's... y- you inherit stuff-

    22. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    23. EK

... genetically, whatever. Uh, you know, I'm pretending-

    24. JR

      Yeah.

    25. EK

... I know what I'm saying. And, uh... (laughs)

    26. JR

      Epigenetics.

    27. EK

Yeah, but my... oh, that's good. Oh, yeah.

    28. JR

      Yeah.

    29. EK

      I remember that. Anyway- (laughs)

    30. JR

      Ugh.

  3. 4:349:17

The Comedy Store late-night ecosystem: Don Barris, danger, and Philly energy

    1. EK

I'm like, "Oh, God." I remember this one night at The Comedy Store.

    2. JR

(laughs) That's what your Philly guys-

    3. EK

      They're crazy.

    4. JR

      (laughs)

    5. EK

This is... I don't know if you'll remember this, because it was more like I was a nervous wreck. Jimmy was visiting, and he worked se- like, he installed computers all over the country, so he would come to LA a lot. And he'd just pop in to The Comedy Store, and we'd be like, "Oh, shit, my brother's here." So, we're hanging out. You were... (laughs) we were all hanging out, like, in the... what is it called? Like, the back-

    6. JR

      Where the parking lot is?

    7. EK

      Kind of.

    8. JR

      Yeah.

    9. EK

      But, like, inside.

    10. JR

      Right, right, right.

    11. EK

      You know, in the little...

    12. JR

      Yeah.

    13. EK

So, you're sitting on the, the ledge, and, uh, Don Barris was saying crazy shit to me.

    14. JR

      (laughs)

    15. EK

Right? And in the way, uh, Don does it, we love it.

    16. JR

      Right, right, right.

    17. EK

We love it. But I'm dying, and he's saying, like, horrible shit. (laughs) Right?

    18. JR

      (laughs)

    19. EK

But we're crying laughing, and then, uh... and Jimmy was, like, just taking it in, like, "What the fuck is this?"

    20. JR

      (laughs)

    21. EK

And you (laughs) ... you looked at Don-

    22. JR

      (laughs) I can't.

    23. EK

... you looked at Don and you go, "Uh, Don, look at his calves. Rethink what you're saying."

    24. JR

      (laughs)

    25. EK

'Cause Jimmy has these inc- ridiculous calves, and he's, he's like Popeye. His forearms-

    26. JR

      And he was wearing shorts.

    27. EK

      ... yeah, of course.

    28. JR

      Yeah.

    29. EK

Jean shorts, I'm positive. He's an idiot. (laughs)

    30. JR

The... but I was like, "Don, you're about to get smashed."

  4. 9:1715:19

Stage nerves, reps, and finding authenticity (Joey Diaz & Theo Von examples)

    1. EK

He's truly the freest of entertainers. Like, when I go up, I'm... I still get nervous. I don't know if you s-... get nervous at all.

    2. JR

      Sure.

    3. EK

      Just... You do?

    4. JR

      Yeah, sure.

    5. EK

Okay, good. Because I... sometimes I feel like an idiot.

    6. JR

If you care about something, you're gonna get nervous.

    7. EK

      There you go. Yeah.

    8. JR

      That's what it is.

    9. EK

And so I panic a little. But Don Barris just doesn't... He just walks up, like, "Hey, it's me."

    10. JR

      Yeah.

    11. EK

Like, uh, he just... Maybe it's from years of doing the warmup as well.

    12. JR

      I think that, too.

    13. EK

      Yeah.

    14. JR

      I think it's, it's a reps thing. It's reps.

    15. EK

      Sure.

    16. JR

How many reps do you put it on stage? Like, some of those guys in New York that were hosts, they would get better really quick, especially if they're delivering.

    17. EK

      Yeah.

    18. JR

Because if you're hosting these nights in New York where people are doing seven minutes-

    19. EK

      Uh-huh.

    20. JR

... you're going on stage, you're interacting with the crowd over and over and over again.

    21. EK

      And keeping them.

    22. JR

Yeah. And you find a way to be yourself.

    23. EK

      Mm-hmm.

    24. JR

It's l- s-... like, the inauthentic thing that a person does on stage, you feel it while you're doing it, the audience feels it.

    25. EK

      Yeah.

    26. JR

And they might laugh still, but you know that you're not really... But then when someone figures out how to be just them-

    27. EK

      Right.

    28. JR

... for whatever reason, like, uh, Sebastian, he had to figure that out.

    29. EK

      Sure.

    30. JR

      You know, and-

  5. 15:1917:20

Women in standup: tougher starts, topic constraints, and audience bias

    1. JR

That is... I've always said this and I think this needs to be recognized, like, women are limited in the way the audience is willing to perceive them right off the bat. Just willing, willing to... You have to break through boundaries-

    2. EK

      Right.

    3. JR

... in order for them to take you even remotely seriously. You start off... If a man starts off at zero, a woman goes on stage, she starts off at negative three.

    4. EK

      (laughs)

    5. JR

      Minimum.

    6. EK

      Immediately?

    7. JR

Immediately. If a guy sees a girl go on stage, how many guys, like your brother? If he sees-

    8. EK

      (laughs) Always.

    9. JR

Yeah. If he sees a girl walk on stage they're like, "Ugh."

    10. EK

Well, for a d- with Dice, the... When they look at me when I come out, they're like, "Is this a sacrifice?"

    11. JR

      (burping sound)

    12. EK

"Who is this? What is this gonna... Who's this?"

    13. JR

      But-

    14. EK

      But now they know me.

    15. JR

      But once y-

    16. EK

      So that's good.

    17. JR

But once you're proven they're like, "Oh, okay."

    18. EK

      Cool.

    19. JR

      But it's a harder gig.

    20. EK

      Absolutely.

    21. JR

It is a harder gig for a woman, and then women have these two other boundaries. If you talk about sex, then-

    22. EK

      Oh.

    23. JR

Then people, like, think you're a slut and you're... They disrespect you, right?

    24. EK

      Right.

    25. JR

Or, like, you can talk about how men suck. You could talk, you could talk about a few things. You can't talk about politics. You start talking about politics to a bunch of men, they're like, "Shut the fuck up. I got opinions too."

    26. EK

      (laughs)

    27. JR

They'll just start, they'll just start yelling at you, "Bullshit."

    28. EK

      It goes back to the-

    29. JR

"Sucking Russia collusion in the Steele dossier."

    30. EK

      (laughs)

  6. 17:2024:55

Ambien horror stories and the Roseanne fallout (drugs, memory, and accountability)

    1. JR

Actually, I shouldn't say she was forced into that because that was one of the issues that they had with her when she was on that show is that she loved Trump. (laughs)

    2. EK

We- Right, she got fired for it. She got fired for-

    3. JR

      No.

    4. EK

      ... her opinions.

    5. JR

She got f- She got fired because she was Ambien'd up in the middle of the night.

    6. EK

      Oh, right, right.

    7. JR

She made some tweets about the lady from, uh-

    8. EK

      Right. She's-

    9. JR

... the government that looks like the lady from the Planet of the Apes.

    10. EK

      Yeah.

    11. JR

Yeah, and she didn't know that that lady was Black. She thought that lady was Jewish.

    12. EK

      Right.

    13. JR

And she talks about it on stage. She's like, "I thought that bitch was Jewish."

    14. EK

      (laughs)

    15. JR

And if you look at her, you get it. Like, she's-

    16. EK

      Yeah.

    17. JR

Very light-skinned and she has s- straight hair. And, you know, unfortunately, the joke that she was making, the only reason why she could make that joke, is 'cause it kinda works.

    18. EK

      Right.

    19. JR

      Like, you know?

    20. EK

      It's pretty accurate.

    21. JR

B- Right, but it's not... She was just an old lady who has-

    22. EK

      Right.

    23. JR

... mental health issues who's on Ambien and a host of other drugs, and people wanted to ruin her life for something she didn't even fucking remember doing.

    24. EK

      That's the crazy part.

    25. JR

Bro, they dope, they dope people up with all kinds of wild shit.

    26. EK

      (laughs)

    27. JR

And then they make you responsible for what you did when you were on that wild shit? That seems so crazy.

    28. EK

Ambien's the fucking scariest to me.

    29. JR

Bro, Kevin James made a turkey, I think it was a turkey. He made a meal.

    30. EK

      On Ambien.

  7. 24:5536:45

Twitter vs. TikTok: addiction, outrage loops, and “preferred spyware”

    1. EK

I'm a little addicted to TikTok.

    2. JR

      ... yeah, TikTok, it-

    3. EK

      Is this a-

    4. JR

      ... I wonder if-

    5. EK

      ... intervention? (laughs)

    6. JR

      No, it's not.

    7. EK

      Just kidding. (laughs)

    8. JR

But I think... I wonder if TikTok is... What if... I wonder if it's better for you to just scroll at videos of things happening that are nonsense.

    9. EK

      Mm-hmm. Sometimes there's news, but-

    10. JR

But maybe that's better, 'cause that doesn't... Like, I don't have TikTok, but I have Instagram. And Instagram does not make me feel the way that Twitter makes me feel. Twitter makes me feel like I'm watching a fight-

    11. EK

      Oh, yeah.

    12. JR

... between cats. Like, it's a cat fight-

    13. EK

      (laughs)

    14. JR

... in a house. Just... (meows)

    15. EK

      (laughs)

    16. JR

And I just want to get the fuck out of... I don't want to be a part of this.

    17. EK

      Yeah.

    18. JR

And it's also, like, a very poor... It's, it's a very clearly poor management of time and resources. If you're using your time and resources to argue constantly on Twitter, but your, your life has to be a mess.

    19. EK

      Has to be.

    20. JR

It has to be a mess. It's impossible for you to only be disciplined-

    21. EK

      Yeah.

    22. JR

... in, uh, in like, in, in this area, or you, like, contain yourself in this area. But the rest of your life, though, everything's locked down, you don't have any problems. But when you go after Twitter, it, uh, it doesn't affect you and it doesn't affect the rest of your life. Bullshit.

    23. EK

      (laughs)

    24. JR

      Bullshit. You're-

    25. EK

You're fighting with the invisible man-

    26. JR

      Yeah.

    27. EK

... but that stuff is out there forever.

    28. JR

      It's-

    29. EK

      Forever.

    30. JR

Yeah. It's out there forever, and it's also just a... It's 100% proof that you are engaging in a foolish waste of your resources.

  8. 36:4544:06

Free the nipple, fake breastfeeding loopholes, and why topless laws exist

    1. JR

Is that, wasn't that a thing in New York City where they were like illegally arguing that women-

    2. EK

Oh, I've seen the, I've seen the protests there.

    3. JR

... should be able to walk around topless because men can walk around topless.

    4. EK

Yeah. I saw a, a protest in Asheville one time, and I was having lunch with Carla Bulve, we were doing a festival down there, and it was l- packed, like and it was... We were both like, and I'm not gay, but watching them flap while you're walk- it's just, I was like, "Oh, wow, that's what they're supposed to look like?"

    5. JR

      Yeah.

    6. EK

And then Carla's just on the floor like, "Holy shit, I'm gonna move here."

    7. JR

This is, isn't it interesting that that's controversial? That like there's laws-

    8. EK

      Yeah.

    9. JR

... that will tell you... So...Look, if, if, if there's laws about a man exposing himself in public, that makes sense, 'cause that's like a public health danger, and it's danger because the vast majority of, like, sexual predators-

    10. EK

      Mm-hmm.

    11. JR

... especially for, like, younger people, are men, right? Right?

    12. EK

      Yeah.

    13. JR

So a guy with his dick out in public is, like, a public safety hazard.

    14. EK

      Yeah.

    15. JR

A woman with her tits out is really... No one's scared.

    16. EK

But it's because of the predators-

    17. JR

      No one's scared.

    18. EK

      ... probably.

    19. JR

      Right.

    20. EK

They're trying to keep them off. (laughs)

    21. JR

That's my point. That's my point.

    22. EK

      Oh, okay.

    23. JR

It's like, it's the only time where a law is in that, where you don't have any fear whatsoever about that person harming someone-

    24. EK

      Mm-hmm.

    25. JR

... with their body, but yet you make their body a crime.

    26. EK

      Right.

    27. JR

You make showing parts of their body a crime. Like, you could get a ticket or you could get-

    28. EK

      Right. Oh, yeah.

    29. JR

I think they could probably even arrest you for public nudity.

    30. EK

      Indecency. Public-

Childhood tomboy roots to trans debate: identity, incentives, clinics, and detransition

    1. JR

Do you think they could've talked you into being trans if you were like 12?

    2. EK

      Absolutely. 100%

    3. JR

      Isn't that crazy?

    4. EK

And I'm good friends with Dylan Mulvaney. We did a pilot together.

    5. JR

      That's hilarious.

    6. EK

Dylan was, um, not trans when I met them.

    7. JR

      How'd he say it?

    8. EK

      I don't know.

    9. JR

      Be careful.

    10. EK

      (laughs)

    11. JR

      You're gonna get in trouble.

    12. EK

She knows I love her, so I can't say anything wrong. But I li-

    13. JR

So you knew her when she was a he?

    14. EK

Right. And we had the best time. Uh, but, but meeting her, when I did, I was like, "Oh, she is more woman than I ever was, ev- ever will be." Like I know I have the parts.

    15. JR

      Even with a dick?

    16. EK

I fe- I'm telling you, more girly than... (laughs) I mean, girly-girly.

    17. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    18. EK

And my best friend growing up was like that.

    19. JR

      You're a very kind person.

    20. EK

      But-

    21. JR

      You're, you're a very kind person.

    22. EK

      Why?

    23. JR

And I just wanna introduce this thought into your mind.

    24. EK

      Uh-oh.

    25. JR

      People are performative occasionally.

    26. EK

      Oh, absolutely.

    27. JR

And so, and, and sometimes when people want you to think of them in one way or another, they will behave that way, and people can keep that up for-

    28. EK

I didn't know them from anybody. We just met.

    29. JR

      Right.

    30. EK

So you're s- saying sh- she was performing, like-

Predators, Nickelodeon scandals, and algorithm-amplified moral panic

    1. JR

Well, isn't there like a scandal that's going on right now?

    2. EK

      Yeah. Bad. Real bad.

    3. JR

What is, what is the Nickelodeon scandal?

    4. EK

It's uh, the Dan guy, uh...

    5. NA

      A lot. I mean, I don't even remember if it's that.

    6. EK

      It took-

    7. NA

      There's another one too.

    8. JR

      I just-

    9. EK

Oh, really? A new one? Oh.

    10. JR

I just like kids. I just like working with kids.

    11. EK

      Agreed.

    12. JR

I just like being around them and being alone with them.

    13. EK

      Priests. Yeah.

    14. JR

Being alone with them. I like being alone with them.

    15. EK

      Teachers. Yeah.

    16. JR

Just, just me and the kid.

    17. EK

      Camp counselors.

    18. JR

Shh. Let's keep a secret. What the fuck?

    19. EK

      That's fucked up.

    20. JR

Right. But there's humans that recognize that there's like patterns that they can fall into-

    21. EK

      Mm-hmm.

    22. JR

... where they can get more attention and get more praise. So this is the Nickelodeon thing. It says, "The actor has claimed he was sexually abused by dialogue and acting coach, Brian Peck-"

    23. EK

      Oh.

    24. JR

"... who pleaded no contest to performing a lewd act with a 14 or 15-year-old and to oral copulation with a minor under 16 in 2004. Ultimately sentenced to 16 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender in October 2004. In his first interview since the release of the doc, Bell has shared his thoughts on Nickelodeon's response to the allegations."

    25. EK

      This is sad.

    26. JR

Yeah, I mean, how do you know when someone... I mean, if you hire, you're hoping you're hiring people that just like, like making kid shows. Maybe they have kids.

    27. EK

      Yeah.

    28. JR

      You know, whether it's-

    29. EK

But why can't the parent be present? Like this, this kinda shit, but like, they say kids that get molested and stuff like that-

    30. JR

      Mm-hmm.

  11. 1:02:271:09:41

Canada, public prayer, assimilation vs. multiculturalism, and U.S. military footprint

    1. EK

... the Catholic Church, uh, changes on a dime. Like, even something... Lent, right now we're in Lent, right?

    2. JR

      Right.

    3. EK

There were so many rules that my mom had that we don't ha- like my generation didn't have, and now it's a whole nother, like Lent is n- Now I'm looking at kids like, "What? You can do that? It's Lent, you're not allowed to... You have to do this, this, and this." But they've changed, they just change so that they r- can recruit more people.

    4. JR

That's why the Muslims are gonna win. They don't give a fuck who joins.

    5. EK

      Exactly.

    6. JR

That's... Ramadan is you got a month and nobody's eating.

    7. EK

      (laughs)

    8. JR

      All day long-

    9. EK

      Unbelievable.

    10. JR

... no water, no food. We were, uh, in Downtown the other day.

    11. EK

      Mm-hmm.

    12. JR

Driving Downtown LA and there's an alleyway and this dude was in the alleyway-

    13. EK

      In LA?

    14. JR

      As... No.

    15. EK

      Or here?

    16. JR

      In Austin.

    17. EK

      Austin. Okay.

    18. JR

      Did I say LA?

    19. EK

      Yeah, yeah. It's okay.

    20. JR

Did I? I'm sorry. In Austin.

    21. EK

      I was, I'm just-

    22. JR

Downtown Austin. And, uh, there was this dude that was in an alleyway and he was, uh, it was the sun was going down, so he's praying.

    23. EK

      Oh, I, I, I saw that.

    24. JR

He was, "Wherever the fuck you are, you gotta pray."

    25. EK

Yeah, I saw it in New York City.

    26. JR

      Yeah.

    27. EK

And he wa- he was like i- and it's so hard to find a space in New York City, so I-

    28. JR

      Right.

    29. EK

I was like, "Wow, that is impressive."

    30. JR

      That's devotion.
