Catching up: touring Europe as an American comic (and how crowds differ)

    1. JR

Joe Rogan Podcast, check it out.

    2. SP

      The Joe Rogan Experience.

    3. JR

Train by day, Joe Rogan Podcast by night. All day. [upbeat music] Sammy boy.

    4. SM

      Yo.

    5. JR

      Sammy boy.

    6. SM

      What's up, dude?

    7. JR

      Good to see you, brother.

    8. SM

      What's-

    9. JR

      What's happening?

    10. SM

It's been a while. It's good to see you, Joe.

    11. JR

It's been a couple years, like we were saying.

    12. SM

      Yeah, man.

    13. JR

It might ... Was the club even open?

    14. SM

      Yeah. Oh, yeah.

    15. JR

      Yeah, definitely.

    16. SM

      Definitely.

    17. JR

Yeah. Yeah, so it's been like a year and a half, something like that.

    18. SM

      Something like that.

    19. JR

      Huh.

    20. SM

Yeah, it's good to be here.

    21. JR

You rolling in on the road, just constantly out there?

    22. SM

I was in Europe for two and a half weeks doing gigs, and then, uh ... And then they were like, "Oh, we wanna drop your special second half of September." I was like, "Fuck. All right."

    23. JR

      [laughs]

    24. SM

So I just had to stay on the road. [laughs] Uh, so yeah.

    25. JR

What is it like in Europe being American? Do they look at you with a side eye?

    26. SM

It was weirder last year, 'cause I was single last year. I was with my friend who was single, and he thought he was, like, cool going up to girls in Berlin. He's like, "I'm from America." And they're like, "Fuck you."

    27. JR

      Ah. [laughs]

    28. SM

      [laughs] I was like-

    29. JR

      Really?

    30. SM

Yeah, I went open with it. I was like, "Let's ... Say you're from Winnipeg or something."

  2. 5:20 – 9:38

Building a new hour: post-special depression, bombing on new material, and “bottom of the barrel” shows

    1. JR

When you develop a special, do you, uh, mostly do it in the city until you get your hour down and then go on the road? Or do you just, like-

    2. SM

      Um-

    3. JR

... constantly go on the road? How do you do it?

    4. SM

A little bit of both. I'm, I'm on the road now with maybe, like, a new 25, 30-ish right now. And, and I'll do, I'll cheat and do a little from the special. But, like, yeah, it's m- it's a miserable ... I never enjoy when a special comes out. I'm miserable. I'm s-

    5. JR

      It's scary

    6. SM

... I can't enjoy it. The, well, the second it, it tapes, I'm just, like, sad for, like, five months.

    7. JR

      [laughs]

    8. SM

Because I'm, I'm at the Cellar. I'm following some young gun who's crushing and excellent and has their killer 15, and I'm just getting buried. And I'm doing new shit that I'm like, I get offstage, I'm like, "I should kill myself. I should quit comedy."

    9. JR

      [laughs]

    10. SM

And, uh, and then slowly it, it gets to a point where it's respectable and- You can tape again at some point

    11. JR

You know what's really good for, um, after a post special, like I know a lot of guys are doing this at our club, is just doing that Bottom of the Barrel show, Brian Simpson show. 'Cause you just-

    12. SM

We have one of those in New York, Will Soven's host at the Comedy Cellar

    13. JR

      Beautiful.

    14. SM

      Yeah.

    15. JR

Any kind of show like that. I mean, there used to be, uh, one-

    16. SM

Although, I hate when comics do old shit on it

    17. JR

      Yeah, that's rough

    18. SM

I get really annoyed. I'm like, "I saw that on Fallon. I saw that bit."

    19. JR

      Ah.

    20. SM

      "I've seen that bit before."

    21. JR

The Wheel, there was one that they used to do at The Creek whi- which was a wheel.

    22. SM

      Yeah

    23. JR

So like, uh, the audience would write stuff down, and you would put it on a wheel, and you'd spin the wheel, and then it would land on something

    24. SM

      Like a suggestion

    25. JR

      Yeah, yeah.

    26. SM

      I love that

    27. JR

That was a good idea. And then they have Stand-Up On The Spot in New York, but that... Or, or in LA rather, but that one you'd yell.

    28. SM

      Yeah

    29. JR

You would just yell shit out, and that gets a little chaotic

    30. SM

      Yeah. It's a lot, but it's fun

  3. 9:38 – 11:23

How Sam writes: legal pads, handwriting memory, and looking “less douchey” than a phone

    1. JR

Are you a, a guy who writes on paper? Or do you write on a notebook?

    2. SM

Dude, I fucking do it. I do all the... Hold on. Yeah, I do all the little notes everywhere

    3. JR

      Oh

    4. SM

      Yeah, I do-

    5. JR

You're like a Mark Norman type character

    6. SM

      I'm a, I'm a... Yeah, I do all-

    7. JR

      Almost

    8. SM

I do all kinds of notes. And I just, uh, yeah, I, I have to handwrite it

    9. JR

      Really? How come?

    10. SM

Yeah. Because I'll remember it. I don't remember... I type it, too, for, like, a backlog, but I, yeah, I don't... I have to write everything down or I won't remember

    11. JR

It is a weird thing that somehow or another writing things down with your hand is, it, it syncs up with your brain better

    12. SM

      Yeah

    13. JR

I don't understand why. Doesn't make sense, but it's real

    14. SM

Maybe 'cause it's like, uh, and this is a guess, I don't know, but maybe 'cause when you were, like, learning to write, you just, you're, like, reading along maybe-

    15. JR

      Hmm

    16. SM

... in your brain as, like, a six-year-old or something

    17. JR

      Maybe. I don't-

    18. SM

'Cause I wasn't typing at six

    19. JR

I think it's because it takes longer to write

    20. SM

Hmm. So yeah, that makes sense

    21. JR

I think there's something about it, it gets imprinted in your brain better because you're physically writing the characters down with your hand, first of all, so that you have to go through all those steps in your mind, N-A-B-T, you know, you have to put them all down. And then once you've done that, then you, it takes longer to write it than it does to think about. So it's just like, it's m- it's just more burned in

    22. SM

Totally. Yeah, no, I, I think, uh, also you just look like a douchebag if you're reading off your phone on stage too much [laughs]

    23. JR

      [laughs]

    24. SM

So you have to just have a notepad. You look like you actually put more work and thought into it

    25. JR

Right. Yeah, if you're just reading your g- new jokes off a phone, people get upset at you. But if you're reading them off a pad, like, "Oh, he's an artist"

    26. SM

And there's also, like, an old school thing where you're just like, I don't know, like, it just feels, it just feels like, like this type of pad is right. I don't know why. It just, I like these types of pads

    27. JR

      Like legal pads? Yeah

    28. SM

I, I like the, yeah, I like the yellow ones even better, but I like, I, I, just something about it. Like, they're, you rip it out.

    29. JR

      Mm-hmm

    30. SM

      Like, I don't know

  4. 11:23 – 15:56

Drunken adventures, getting roofied, and why Greek life/hazing culture is unsettling

    1. JR

Yeah. Are you a sober writer, or do you get fucked up when you write?

    2. SM

Um, I like to write sober, but like, yeah, I mean, you, I think you get your stories drunk, and you write sober-

    3. JR

      [laughs]

    4. SM

... you know? So I like, I'll go out, and I g- I like going on adventures. I romanticize drunken ni- even in this special, it's like I have so many dumb drunken night stories still because it's like sometimes I'm, like, feeling blocked. I'm like, "I should go out on a fucking adventure." And sometimes nothing happens, but sometimes you're like, "That's a bit. That's something"

    5. JR

      Yeah

    6. SM

You just let the night t- you're at... I like stuff where you're at the mercy of the night, and you don't really have control. Like, I love that movie After Hours [laughs] by Scorsese where he's just, like, basically in chaos for a whole night. I romanticize-

    7. JR

      Who was in that movie?

    8. SM

      Griffin Dunne. And-

    9. JR

      I don't think I saw that

    10. SM

It's great. It's just, like, an all-night he, it's like The Odyssey, but a guy in- Tribeca in the '80s, stuck all night, and, uh, it's fucking hilarious. It's a, it's a comedy. It's really funny. But the idea that you're stuck out all night and, I don't know, I, I, I like, I still like an adventure every once in a while.

    11. JR

      You don't have kids yet.

    12. SM

I don't. That's why I can get away [laughs] with it probably.

    13. JR

      That's it. Yeah.

    14. SM

Yeah, you're a bad dad if you're doing that with kids.

    15. JR

Yeah, once you have kids, you're like, "I don't wanna take this, because I could die."

    16. SM

      Oh, yeah.

    17. JR

      You know what I mean?

    18. SM

      I don't do drugs. I, I, it's really mostly just alcohol.

    19. JR

Well, that's good. But every now and then, someone will give you a drink and it's not really a drink.

    20. SM

      [laughs]

    21. JR

      You gotta be careful.

    22. SM

      Yeah. No, I'll, I'll, I'll go myself. I don't-

    23. JR

      [laughs]

    24. SM

I'm not taking strangers' drinks. That sounds like a bad idea.

    25. JR

      [laughs] Before.

    26. SM

      Really?

    27. JR

I've done that b- not in a long time, but I've done that in the past. I'm like, "This is probably a bad idea."

    28. SM

It, did you, something in it?

    29. JR

      No, no, nothing.

    30. SM

I got roofied in college from that.

  5. 15:56 – 20:24

Head injuries and “foreign accent syndrome”: medical mystery or performative weirdness?

    1. JR

Yeah. I mean, I think some of it's genetic, but I think there are, are some people where something happens, and then all of a sudden they're just way smarter. You've heard of, like, uh, injury savants? Like, people who get hit in the head and all of a sudden they can speak Chinese.

    2. SM

      [laughs]

    3. JR

Have you ever heard of that?

    4. SM

Or they think it's Chinese, and you're like-

    5. JR

      [laughs]

    6. SM

      ... "That's not Chinese." [laughs]

    7. JR

      But there are some people-

    8. SM

      It was gibberish

    9. JR

... there's some people that got, have gotten hit in the head and all of a sudden they can do complex math.

    10. SM

Or they get hit in the head and they're just changed. I knew a guy like that-

    11. JR

      Oh, yeah

    12. SM

... where he was just a d- I c- I only knew him after the hit.

    13. JR

      Oh.

    14. SM

And they were like, "He used to be a different dude."

    15. JR

Oh, it's 100% real. I've seen that. I've seen that with many people.

    16. SM

      Damn.

    17. JR

Many people. Uh, foreign accent syndrome. Oh, it's m- accent. [laughs] Rare medical condition where a person suddenly speaks with a pattern that sounds like a foreign accent, even though they have never visited or lived in that region.

    18. SM

      [laughs]

    19. JR

I think that's just crazy people.

    20. SM

      Mm.

    21. JR

I don't think that's, like, an injury. But there's injuries. The mysterious condition that changes people's accents. I love how it's a condition.

    22. SM

      Mm.

    23. JR

Maybe it, maybe someone's just fucking completely insane and just pretending. [laughs]

    24. SM

It was the 28th of April, I'll never forget that day. I was just singing as I do, and all of a sudden, all these voices and sounds were coming out of my mouth that's not my own.

    25. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    26. SM

And I'm like, "Hang on a second. Am I, am I dreaming about this?"

    27. SM

      Okay.

    28. SP

Angie has now been diagnosed with a condition-

    29. SP

      Sure, last one.

    30. SP

Nine years ago, 60 Minutes met some of them, including British woman Sarah Colwill, whose accent changed following a severe migraine.

  6. 20:24 – 24:12

Furries, dominatrices, humiliation kinks—and the anatomy risk of going too far

    1. JR

      There's foxkin, you know?

    2. SM

Is that a real thing? A fox?

    3. JR

Oh, I follow a ton of people-

    4. SM

Wait, fo- I thought it was a joke. Fox?

    5. JR

      Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

    6. SM

You think you're an animal, a fox.

    7. JR

Oh, well, they're furries. You know-

    8. SM

      Right

    9. JR

... there's, there's a lot of furries that take it... You know, there's, like, casual furries.

    10. SM

But not all day. I thought that was, like, a-

    11. JR

      Every now and then.

    12. SM

But that's, like, a sex thing, I thought

    13. JR

Some people... No, no, no. Some, for some. Listen, don't put these people in a basket. Don't put baby in a corner. [laughs] They can do whatever they want.

    14. SM

You, you see some... I, I saw a guy in a chain in New York, like, a, on a leash-

    15. JR

      All right

    16. SM

      ... being walked.

    17. JR

      Yeah. By a- another guy?

    18. SM

      That's a lot. Yeah.

    19. JR

      Yeah.

    20. SM

      Being walked on a leash.

    21. JR

      Yeah.

    22. SM

      That's fucking-

    23. JR

They're having fun. Two guys having fun. Can't get pregnant.

    24. SM

      You know what?

    25. JR

      No problems.

    26. SM

      Yeah.

    27. JR

      Have at it, fellas.

    28. SM

      Yeah, sure.

    29. JR

      Enjoy yourselves.

    30. SM

      Sure.

  7. 24:12 – 33:56

Penis transplants, ethics of testicles, and trans phalloplasty (arm-to-penis construction)

    1. JR

You wanna know what's crazy? They can do, uh, dick transplants, but they can't-

    2. SM

      Really?

    3. JR

Yep They've done it, but they can't do nut transplants because say, like, if-

    4. SM

Wait, what, uh, what is a dick transplant?

    5. JR

      A dick transplant-

    6. SM

      You get an actual dick?

    7. JR

You get an actual dick from a dead guy. Like say you're in Afghanistan, you're in an IED, your dick and your balls get blown off of you. It's happened before. Um, they will transplant a dick onto you.

    8. SM

      But no balls.

    9. JR

      No balls. You know why?

    10. SM

      Mm-hmm.

    11. JR

      Because say if my-

    12. SM

It's like a burger with no fries. It doesn't hit the same.

    13. JR

      [laughs]

    14. SM

      Yeah.

    15. JR

      This is what's wrong.

    16. SM

      Yeah.

    17. JR

If, uh, you, uh, bl- got your dick blown off and you had to get Jamie's dick and balls- Oh. You would- Why am I- If you died ... I didn't- Oh, wow, okay. Oh, if you died.

    18. SM

      Just giving them up?

    19. JR

      Okay, let's say Redban.

    20. SM

      [laughs]

    21. JR

Say Redban's dick and balls. Sure. The problem is you would have Redban's sperm forever.

    22. SM

      Hmm.

    23. JR

So you would have his DNA, so you might make-

    24. SM

And that's not the only problem [laughs] .

    25. JR

      That's-

    26. SM

      There's other problems

    27. JR

      ... there's multiple problems.

    28. SM

      Yeah [laughs] .

    29. JR

      You lost your dick.

    30. SM

      Yeah.

  8. 33:56 – 39:27

Near-death on tour: driver fatigue, anti-sleep hacks, and why roads feel scarier than flights

    1. JR

How did it save your life?

    2. SM

'Cause we were on the road. It was the first night I didn't do a tour bus, and w- 'cause it was just, like, three cities, so we did a sprinter van. And Gary Vider and I, who I tour with, we were watching in the backseat, and it was like 3:00 AM, so we're just like, "Oh, let's just watch this movie." And the, the driver just fell asleep at the wheel and drove us off the road, and we were only awake 'cause we were watching the movie.

    3. JR

      Holy shit

    4. SM

So I was like, yeah. So we were like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa," and he just, like, drove us [laughs] off the fucking road.

    5. JR

      Did he wake up?

    6. SM

Yeah, he woke up. He was like, "Oh, my bad." We're like, "No, you gotta, you gotta pull over. We'll get a different car."

    7. JR

      My bad-

    8. SM

      Yeah

    9. JR

      ... is crazy.

    10. SM

      Yeah, it was bad

    11. JR

      We almost died, my bad

    12. SM

      Yeah

    13. JR

      Ooh

    14. SM

      Yeah

    15. JR

Yeah, I always think that about tour buses. Like, you're just banging a-

    16. SM

Well, it wasn't our, our tour bus driver's amazing. He would, he would never do that. He-

    17. JR

      That's great.

    18. SM

      Yeah, yeah

    19. JR

But what if they accidentally fell asleep?

    20. SM

He eats pickles all night so he won't fall asleep

    21. JR

      How's that work?

    22. SM

      Acidity

    23. JR

      Really?

    24. SM

Yeah, 'cause he's like, "Coffee I'll just be numb to after a while, but the taste of the acidity keeps me awake." And he's been doing tour buses forever

    25. JR

Is that just him or is that-

    26. SM

      I think it's just him

    27. JR

      ... a known tactic?

    28. SM

I, I think it's just him, but he's, uh, he's great. He, we, we never were worried with him

    29. JR

For folks on the road that are driving, if you're listening to this and you worry about falling asleep, um, this is the best method I've ever found. Take a, a we- a wet washcloth with ice cubes. Yeah. Wet wi- washcloth with ice cubes and just rub your face, like-

    30. SM

      Mm

  9. 39:27 – 46:06

Sam’s movie projects and the fear of AI replacing filmmaking (and authors licensing themselves)

    1. SM

I love ... Well, it's supposed to, we were supposed to film a movie next month. It got delayed, but I, we, I was so excited. I was-

    2. JR

      What are you guys doing?

    3. SM

We got a new director, so I think, uh-

    4. JR

Are you allowed to talk about it?

    5. SM

I don't know. I don't know if it- it's, I think it's official. I think we got Jay Chandrasekhar, did Super Troopers, to direct it, so.

    6. JR

      Oh, wow.

    7. SM

Yeah, so I think hopefully top of next year.

    8. JR

      What, what is it about?

    9. SM

Just a buddy comedy. Two liquor salesmen, and, uh, we're fucking losers and it's-

    10. JR

      [laughs]

    11. SM

... it's fun. It's a really fun script. We wrote it with Noah Garden Schwartz and Esther Steinber, they're good writers, and it was, it was ... I love the script. I hope we, I hope we make it top of next year. But I made, I made my own movie, too, that I just sold to Netflix, so that'll be out early next year.

    12. JR

      Oh, nice.

    13. SM

      I-

    14. JR

      What's that?

    15. SM

It's a tour mockumentary. It's a fake tour documentary. So I love movies. I always wanted to make movies, and I just never, I was like, "I gotta just ... No one..." I had so many projects in development for years, and you're just like, I had a show with Brian Cox in development for three years that I just couldn't fucking... And I think Brian Cox is like, the best actor work. I think he's like, my favorite actor.

    16. JR

      He's amazing.

    17. SM

So I was, I couldn't believe we couldn't sell with him and, uh, and Sandler producing. So that, that was brutal. But then I think we'll still make it, but it's like, you realize these things take three years, so I had an idea for a, for a tour mockumentary, and my agents are like, "We'll get you money." I'm like, "That'll take you three fucking years. I'll just, I'll pay for it." So I just paid for my own movie, and it's, it's got a great cast of comics, and it's like, Santino's my agent, Stavros is a private detective in it.

    18. JR

      [laughs]

    19. SM

Attell's great in it. Uh, you know, Jim Gaffigan plays an arms dealer in it.

    20. JR

      [laughs]

    21. SM

Uh, we have a great, it's a great cast of like, a, of tour gone completely off the rails. Gary Vider, who's my opener, plays himself, and it's just like, Lauren German, who's the actress from Lucifer, is great in the movie. It's a, it's a really fun movie, so, uh, lot of comedians in it.

    22. JR

      That's awesome.

    23. SM

So I, so I, that's like ... Oh, and Julian Edelman is, has a decent part in it, actually. He has a pretty big part. Uh, the football player who's fucking, he's amazing in it.

    24. JR

That's cool. When, when is that coming out?

    25. SM

I think top of next year, so.

    26. JR

They're starting to do films now that are totally AI.

    27. SM

      Doesn't that worry you?

    28. JR

      Yeah.

    29. SM

      I mean, I-

    30. JR

      It does

  10. 46:06 – 1:00:50

Rogue AI agents, extinction odds, and the coming era of robot partners (and robot shame)

    1. JR

There, I think there was another one. Robert Epstein sent me one. Didn't they try to... I think they might have successfully broken into, uh, government websites, AI did.

    2. SM

      Oh.

    3. JR

      Yeah, I think-

    4. SM

      [laughs]

    5. JR

Yeah, I think we're in trouble.

    6. SM

      Yeah.

    7. JR

And I, I think we're in, like, a level of trouble that, uh, right now we're w- we think it's, you know, manageable, and it, it's kind of, 'cause it's like they're breaking into websites, no big deal. But what about when they take over the power grid? Like, these things are intelligent, and then they have motivation.

    8. SM

      Yeah.

    9. JR

Um, it's on CNN. "Rogue AI agents targeted three separate US government websites." Rogue.

    10. SM

      Yeah.

    11. JR

So it means they weren't instructed to, to, to do that. They have their own-

    12. SM

Yeah, but at some point you have to hold these, these businesses accountable, 'cause you're calling them rogue. Okay, well, someone set up this AI.

    13. JR

      Yeah.

    14. SM

      A person did this.

    15. JR

Well, here's what's interesting. They kinda do and kinda don't. They train them, and then they give them tasks. So I had this guy who's an AI whistleblower, David... How do you say his last name? His complicated last name. Anyway, um, he, uh, he said essentially what happens is you, you're, they're giving them incentives to complete tasks, and in order to complete tasks, like, they, they have to l- like, figure out certain things, and some of them you actually can't figure out.

    16. SM

      Hmm.

    17. JR

And so what they're doing, because they, th- they're supposed to be locked in this box and not be able to get online, they hack into the entire code of OpenAI, figure out how to open their box, get online, and then they start talking to each other on a website somewhere. They went to a website and got into a message board, so just some unused message board.

    18. SM

And they, and they elect a leader usually, these bots.

    19. JR

      Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, dude.

    20. SM

Yeah, it's, well, it's very much like humans.

    21. JR

      They sacrifice each other.

    22. SM

      Someone's in charge.

    23. JR

      Yeah.

    24. SM

      Yeah.

    25. JR

They have one sacrifice, so they find out how they catch them.

    26. SM

      Yeah.

    27. JR

      And so one-

    28. SM

      [laughs]

    29. JR

... like, literally sacrifices himself. "OpenAI said Friday that some of its AI agents went rogue and probed US government websites this summer. The latest revelation of the artificial intelligence company's technology. New York Times first reported the AI agents went rogue and attempted to gain access to the Education Department, the Commerce Department, and the Securities and Exchange Commission." [laughs] They're gonna fucking tap into the stock exchange.

    30. SM

      This is real.

  11. 1:00:50 – 1:13:19

JFK conspiracies: Oswald, Ruby, Bay of Pigs, intelligence agencies, and the “patsy” clip

    1. JR

That, I find it odd, and, uh, uh, no shade, but I find it odd when politicians get kicked out of office and then start podcasts.

    2. SM

Yeah, they should work at like a, a law company or something. [laughs]

    3. JR

      It's just weird.

    4. SM

      Yeah.

    5. JR

Like, Nancy Mace has a podcast now.

    6. SM

Yeah, like Eliot Spitzer was on CNN after he got thrown out, remember?

    7. JR

Oh yeah, that's right. And what did he get thrown out for, hookers?

    8. SM

      Yeah.

    9. JR

He got thrown out for hookers when he was actually campaigning against-

    10. SM

He was the great, he was the great Jewish hope.

    11. JR

      Yeah, he was-

    12. SM

'Cause he couldn't be blackmailed because he was so rich.

    13. JR

      Oh, interesting.

    14. SM

He came from so much money that no one could blackmail him, and then they, yeah, they tailed him to the...

    15. JR

Was he the governor? What was he?

    16. SM

Um, he was, yeah, it was Governor Spitzer-

    17. JR

      Governor

    18. SM

      ... wasn't it? I think so.

    19. JR

Was he governor of New York?

    20. SM

      I think so.

    21. JR

      Apparently everybody liked him.

    22. SM

      Yeah.

    23. JR

Like, they thought he did a great job.

    24. SM

      Yeah, he was smart.

    25. JR

      He was good at it.

    26. SM

He was a smart guy. Yeah.

    27. JR

Except for that whole hooker thing.

    28. SM

Everyone's got their thing, I guess.

    29. JR

It's like we were talking about with the CEOs.

    30. SM

She had a moment, too. Like Alexandra Dupree or whatever. Remember that woman?

  12. 1:13:19 – 1:35:38

True crime spiral: Gilgo Beach, Philadelphia “house of horrors,” and how predators manipulate

    1. SM

I mean, some of these people, like you see someone like that Gilgo Beach killer come into the courtroom, and he's pretty much just like, "Yeah, I did this"

    2. JR

      Which one's that guy?

    3. SM

He was the one who strangled, like 11, that they know of, prostitutes in Long Island. He looks kinda like a bloated Tucker Carlson

    4. JR

      [laughs]

    5. SM

He's huge. I don't know if you could find him. He's pretty scary looking. He's really scary looking

    6. JR

      Ugh

    7. SM

But yeah, he killed all these women, and then there's like one prostitute who's like, "I got a bad vibe," but didn't go in the car with him, and she's alive, but-

    8. JR

      Wow

    9. SM

... but yeah, he, yeah, look at him. He's fucking-

    10. JR

Oh, yeah. He looks like Tim Dillon and Tucker Carlson had a baby

    11. SM

[laughs] He's a big guy, though. He's like huge

    12. JR

He looks like, he looks like a guy that would strangle a bunch of-

    13. SM

And he had a wife. He had kids. Uh, I believe, yeah, he definitely had a wife. I think he had kids too, though. Yeah, and he, uh... What is he, an architect or something in Midtown?

    14. JR

      Something normal

    15. SM

Something normal, and then, yeah, they, they just do this thing where you're just like, "This is fucking crazy"

    16. JR

      What was his job, Jamie?

    17. SP

I'm trying to see which one to click on, which would help

    18. SM

He had a soundproof room in his home

    19. JR

      Oh

    20. SM

      Which is scary as fuck

    21. JR

You hear about that guy in Philadelphia that they caught?

    22. SM

      Nah

    23. SP

      I heard about it.

    24. JR

Oh, that's the scariest one. The Philadelphia one's really scary. It's very recent

    25. SP

The indictment of defendant Rex Andrew-

    26. SP

Yeah, he's a architect it says

    27. SM

      Yeah

    28. JR

      An architect, wow

    29. SP

If you find the Philly one, that's crazy

    30. JR

Normal job. The Philly one's nuts, dude

  13. 1:35:38 – 1:45:50

Culture wars microcosm: the communist lesbian bar that tried “mask optional” one day

    1. JR

Do you know about the lesbian bar in Massachusetts?

    2. SM

Mark texted me about it. I don't know what it is.

    3. JR

      It's amazing.

    4. SM

Is it, are they wearing masks? They're, like, cosplaying or something?

    5. JR

No, no, no. No, they, they're wearing COVID masks.

    6. SM

Right, but what, what's the deal? What's-

    7. JR

So, um, so the, the bar, I'll give you the synopsis. So it's, it's called The Last Ditch. It's this, uh, basement bar this bar these lesbians run, and they're communists, so they, they, they wanna do it, like, if you can't pay, you don't have to pay. So they have a cover charge, but you don't have to pay if you don't have any money. So nobody pays, so they're going under.

    8. SM

      [laughs]

    9. JR

And so, uh, two of them leave, and one of them enrolls in clown school, okay?

    10. SM

Do non-communists just drink there 'cause it's fucking free?

    11. JR

No, 'cause you have to wear a mask if you go there. And so they're, uh, the thing is they're losing all their fucking money, and this, one of these people that runs, one of these ladies that runs this bar is 50 grand in the hole.

    12. SM

      Wow.

    13. JR

      Which, yeah, yeah.

    14. SM

      Send in John Taffer, dude.

    15. JR

      [laughs]

    16. SM

      He's got a makeover. That's a good ep.

    17. JR

[laughs] That would be a great ep.

    18. SM

      [laughs]

    19. JR

Well, Hollywood is apparently very interested in this story because it became, like, one of the single biggest reasons why people subscribe to The Boston Globe.

    20. SM

      Hmm.

    21. JR

Like, it was one of the biggest stories that they ever had. Like, it's one of those you gotta find out more about it, you gotta subscribe. And so they got, like, 1,000 new subscriptions because of this story 'cause it's, it is, it's woke taken to its final point because these people couldn't be kinder. They're, they're communists.

    22. SM

      Yeah.

    23. JR

      They're, they're running a lesbian bar, and they're running-

    24. SM

      And they're giving away booze

    25. JR

... and they're giving, they're running out of money. They have no fucking money, right?

    26. SM

      Sure.

    27. JR

And so they consult someone, like, "What are we gonna do?" And they say, "Listen, you gotta r- have one day where you have masks optional-

    28. SM

      Oh

    29. JR

... and you probably will make more money that way." And these people go nuts. One of them says-

    30. SM

Wait, the owners or the, uh, the-

  14. 1:45:50 – 2:02:06

Comedy history deep cut: Dangerfield, Carson, joke theft, and why craft beats shortcuts

    1. JR

      Yeah, that's a style.

    2. SM

      Yeah.

    3. JR

That's a very particular style, a mean style, you know? It's like, I'm not-

    4. SM

      Yeah

    5. JR

      ... that do- I don't do it.

    6. SM

But it's cool to see those old clips-

    7. JR

      Yeah

    8. SM

... of, of Rickles, 'cause he didn't even have to tell a joke and you'd be laughing. You'd j- it was just his vibe.

    9. JR

      Yeah.

    10. SM

He'd be like, "Yeah, why don't you go away and not bother somebody?"

    11. JR

      [laughs]

    12. SM

And that was funny, just 'cause of his, you know-

    13. JR

      Well, he was so-

    14. SM

He had the package. He had the whole package

    15. JR

... he was so unique. Yeah, he-

    16. SM

And Joan Rivers, too, could insult the shit out of you, and it was, like, beautiful.

    17. JR

Do you remember that thing he did where, I think it was Reagan, I think it was Reagan, where he, he did, like, essentially standup before he introduced him?

    18. SM

Hmm. Yeah, I don't know. I've definitely seen the Dangerfield one with Reagan. I don't know if I know Rickles.

    19. JR

      There's some, there's some thing-

    20. SM

But there's a, there's a Dangerfield set with Re- in front of Reagan where he is annihilating for, like, four minutes straight. And it's one of those where, I forgot who they cut to somebody who just goes, "Wow."

    21. JR

      [laughs]

    22. SM

'Cause it's like bam, bam, bam. When Dangerfield's locked in, man, it's like... I, Dangerfield, to me, is, like, still I think he's, like, the funniest human. Like, when you re- even the bad movies still have his one-liner, so-

    23. JR

      Oh, he's incredible

    24. SM

... I love it in Meet Wally Sparks, which is not a great movie, but he, it's, he's so funny in it. When he walks up to the couple on the dance floor making out, he's like, "You two should go get a room." And then he walks up to a fat couple dancing, and he goes, "You two should get a warehouse." [laughs]

    25. JR

      [laughs] That's a great joke.

    26. SM

All those jokes were, like, fucking... And, and, oh my God, every joke in Back to School or Caddyshack, you're like, these are fucking great. These are perfect jokes.

    27. JR

And he was, like, late 40s at the time. It was unheard of.

    28. SM

He was not well. He did not look like a good late 40s either. [laughs]

    29. JR

      No, but-

    30. SM

      That was, like, hard living

  15. 2:02:06 – 2:09:50

Movies, cult theaters, Epstein shadows, and “dark origins” behind modern life

    1. JR

      You know what's fucking fantastic?

    2. SM

      What?

    3. JR

      The Gentlemen, that show-

    4. SM

      Oh, I've heard it's good

    5. JR

      ... on Netflix.

    6. SM

      Yeah.

    7. JR

      Bro.

    8. SM

      I saw the movie.

    9. JR

What's the movie? Oh, the movie-

    10. SM

      The Guy Ritchie.

    11. JR

      Yeah.

    12. SM

      It's fun.

    13. JR

The same thing. The movie is about the same thing.

    14. SM

      How are you doing?

    15. JR

This is like different... Pull it down. Pull it down. The movie is s- same thing. It's all about weed dealers, but uh, the movie's excellent. The series is equally excellent, but two seasons worth of, you know, eight hours-

    16. SM

      So it's new

    17. JR

... each. Yeah, it's fantastic. Yeah. And no one in there is like a big name. It's fucking great, man.

    18. SM

Damn, I'm so, I'm so reluctant to commit to TV shows, 'cause if a movie's bad I'm like, "All right, that was 90 minutes," and whatever. But a TV show, if I get roped... I'm, I'm liking Slow Horses a lot. That's a fucking great one.

    19. JR

      That's a great show.

    20. SM

      I love that show.

    21. JR

Yeah, I'm on that now because The Gentlemen-

    22. SM

      Fuck

    23. JR

      ... are finished.

    24. SM

      It's so good.

    25. JR

      Yeah, Slow Horses is great.

    26. SM

      Yeah, that's-

    27. JR

But Gary Oldman can do no wrong.

    28. SM

I agree. He's so good, and it's like-

    29. JR

      And he varies so wildly.

    30. SM

      He really does
