The Joe Rogan Experience.
- JRJoe Rogan
Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night. All day. (rock music) Mike Perry.
- MPMike Perry
Yes, sir.
- JRJoe Rogan
What's happening? Good to see you, brother.
- MPMike Perry
All right, man. Great to be here.
- JRJoe Rogan
You want some coffee? You drink coffee?
- MPMike Perry
Sure, yeah. Sure, I'll take some.
- JRJoe Rogan
All right. Dude, you have had a, a fascinating renaissance. Cheers, sir.
- MPMike Perry
Cheers, brother. Mm, it's hot as fuck.
- JRJoe Rogan
This bare knuckle boxing thing has been fascinating to watch, man, because it's like someone designed the perfect sport for you.
- MPMike Perry
Mm.
- JRJoe Rogan
You know what I mean?
- MPMike Perry
I, yes, I do.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, you, uh, you are particularly-
- MPMike Perry
I feel like it was made for me.
- JRJoe Rogan
... well-suited for that, and it's, I find it so fascinating because there's a, there's a certain le- and I really wanted to ask you about this 'cause there's a certain something that applies to bare knuckle fighting that just, it, it, it, it's like there's a pain, and there's a danger, and there's a wildness of it that even some very great fighters, they get to a cert- they're in there, and they're like, "I don't like this."
- MPMike Perry
Right.
- JRJoe Rogan
They're too used to gloves. They're too used to whatever they're used to. They don't, they don't want that experience once they find it, once they're in there, but you seem to thrive on it.
- MPMike Perry
You know, it's just a real fight to me. Um, even though, I mean, I still go to the gym and I do MMA with the guys, like, I'm, I love boxing so much though. It's, it's my forte. It's, like, what I'm good at, um, 'cause I'm, I'm cool to take a punch, get hit. That's fine. I'll take a hit to land a better one on you, and, um, in bare knuckle, I mean, there's a lot of opportunity to fight guys who, um, I mean, I did fight Julian Lane who had experience in it.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- MPMike Perry
He had nine fights in it-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- MPMike Perry
... when we fought, and then I fought two guys who hadn't done it yet, so, you know, um ...
- JRJoe Rogan
But it's, it's just, like, like, let's talk about those two guys, like, first of all, Michael Venom Page, that guy is super talented.
- MPMike Perry
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
I mean, he's extraordinary. When you watch him fight in MMA, and he's a guy that I kind of predicted one day. I was like, the one skill that's m- that you don't see a lot of in MMA is this crazy blitz point fighting style 'cause those guys can cover crazy distances, those, those really good-
- MPMike Perry
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... point fighters, and he was a really good point fighter, and, um, he was the first guy that kind of shoo- showed how that style could apply in MMA. He's so elusive and so hard to hit, and, um, you know, you just put it on him.
- MPMike Perry
To, well, it was different, you know? It was-
- 15:00 – 30:00
I've seen him before.…
- MPMike Perry
I've seen him before.
- JRJoe Rogan
And he... This guy fucks everybody up, man.
- MPMike Perry
He headbutts the shit out of people. I've-
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, he fucks everybody up, man.
- MPMike Perry
I wanna fight him.
- JRJoe Rogan
He's a killer. That'd be a wild fight.
- MPMike Perry
That'd be great.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, but this is the thing. It's, like, it's all bare knuckle, but headbutts. You're, you're allowed to do a lot of shit. (smacks lips) You hit... Like, it looks like you can't hit the guy when he's down. But y- you can throw, uh, elbows and headbutts in combination and everything's bare knuckle.
- MPMike Perry
Yeah. Th- you know, like I was saying, I want a challenge because... I mean, the bare knuckle is still challenging, but I made it so easy last time. Luke Rockhold didn't have a chance and it seemed like I could've beaten him in MMA.
- JRJoe Rogan
Do you think that... Do, do you think there's ever a w- I mean, uh, could it ever be possible that even boxing would go to no, no gloves?
- MPMike Perry
Hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, if people just decide they like bare knuckle more?
- MPMike Perry
No, because there's this, (laughs) there's this... What do you call it? Deep down in the boxing, like, it has its own soul. And that's why-
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- MPMike Perry
... it's been around for 200 years and, or more, and, um... You know, it's like when you ha- Speaking of boxing, T-Bud verse Spence.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. Amazing.
- MPMike Perry
Coming up.
- JRJoe Rogan
Amazing. What a fight.
- MPMike Perry
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
I got goosebumps just thinking about-
- MPMike Perry
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... that one.
- MPMike Perry
Everything about it.
- JRJoe Rogan
(exhales) Whoo.
- MPMike Perry
Spence is Spence, the same since the car accident. Even though he's had fights. I've seen him, you know, not paying attention in a fight with Ugas. Ugas was hitting him because he just was like looking around in the ring. And then... And this guy... You know, T-Bud 39 and 0?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- MPMike Perry
That's insane.
- JRJoe Rogan
Insane.
- MPMike Perry
So... And he's a dog.
- JRJoe Rogan
He's a dog and he's the best switch hitter since Hagler.
- 30:00 – 45:00
Yeah, but you know…
- MPMike Perry
s- start their life?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, but you know why? 'Cause they're escaping communism.
- MPMike Perry
Right. No, I mean, props.
- JRJoe Rogan
So they're hungry. Right, right, right, right.
- MPMike Perry
Absolutely.
- JRJoe Rogan
But I'm saying these folks, they're not escaping communism. Most of them are mentally ill.
- MPMike Perry
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
When you're getting like homeless people, most of those people are mentally ill.
- MPMike Perry
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
Or like severe drug addicts.
- MPMike Perry
Well, 'cause they're on drugs.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. They're on drugs and they're mentally ill or both or because of. You know, it's like... But that's a lot of it. And so like in San Francisco, that's the big criticism that, uh ... There's a guy named Michael Shellenberger, and he wrote a book called San Francicko.... describing, like, what happens when progressives ruin cities like they're ruining San Francisco. And he was saying, like, that it just gets to a point where it's just, it's just, it's, what's, uh, going on is too nuts. Like, you're, you're a- allowing these people to have these open air drug dens-
- MPMike Perry
It's a choice though.
- JRJoe Rogan
... in front of everybody and you're paying 'em money to stay there.
- MPMike Perry
Ugh. They're paying them money?
- JRJoe Rogan
They pay 'em money. Yeah, they give 'em money. They, they, they interviewed these guys that were like camped out and they were saying one of the good things about being a homeless person in San Francisco is they give you money. They give you, like, a certain amount of money-
- MPMike Perry
They give them money?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. Give you a certain amount of money every month.
- MPMike Perry
That's m- m-
- JRJoe Rogan
And so there's no incentive to ever leave.
- MPMike Perry
... bringing it on themselves. But you gotta want more in life. You gotta-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- MPMike Perry
... see cool shit and be like, "I fucking wanna-"
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- MPMike Perry
"... put those..." It's hard to be, um, organized. That's ha-, that's my biggest problem why I'm not so rich, I think. I gotta organize my shit, man. I get, I keep a bunch of mementos and I, I start hoarding shit.
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- MPMike Perry
And I'm like, "Damn man, we're moving right now." I'm trying, I'm trying to buy this house. I'm supposed to close on a beautiful home, but the, uh, we need a new appraisal. We got one and they're getting another one, so they pushed the date, but I'm hoping we can get in here because I got the money for it.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- MPMike Perry
So let me in. And, um, (smacks lips) but, you know, forgot my point again, man. We should sp- spark that back up.
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- 45:00 – 1:00:00
(laughs) …
- MPMike Perry
it. And, um, you know, I've, I've done it too, but we were, like, one of the first la- I mean, the n- no fighting was already around in the '80s and then there's boxing, obviously. Uh, Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali, obviously those were big fights, but, you know, now there's more formal tr- kids and, like, the karate combat dudes, they are... They've been raised well by their parents. You know what I mean? Like, they have manners and-
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- MPMike Perry
... and they, they have technique in karate-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- MPMike Perry
... which is... It's different if you look at all the techniques. Like, Muay Thai is like a dog fight, um, but there is technique. Boxing has... It... And when I say technique, it's like positions-
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- MPMike Perry
... of your body. That's, that's how you generate force and, you know, uh, physically control, uh, what- whatever's happening in fighting. I mean, that's what, that's what we're talking about, is how do you fight? How... Shit, why? You know, I wish I could bring something else to the world that means more. But then, you know, the world does piss me off sometimes, so I'm like, "Yay, I get to punch somebody for this." But, you know, thank God. But, you know, how can I be a, an, uh, an addition to society and make a difference and build something and think about something and be smart and... Fuck, man. Being smarter is harder, bro. (laughs) It's fucking hard out here.
- JRJoe Rogan
What do you, what do you... What about maybe have you thought about starting a gym?
- MPMike Perry
Hmm. Yeah. Um. Yeah. I mean, I've (sighs) -
- JRJoe Rogan
'Cause when-
- MPMike Perry
I want to do a, uh, a fight thing, a business company.
- JRJoe Rogan
A fight business company?
- MPMike Perry
A fight company. Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like a promotion company?
- MPMike Perry
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. Yeah, I mean, there, there's-
- MPMike Perry
I don't know.
- JRJoe Rogan
... a lot of ways a guy's like, a guy like you who, you know... There's a lot of guys that can relate to people like you.
- MPMike Perry
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
There's a lot of guys that, you know, they wanna fight too.
- MPMike Perry
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
There's a lot of angry men.
- MPMike Perry
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
And they want to relate to a guy who's figured out a way to positively channel that.
- MPMike Perry
Mm-hmm. It is really positive, but then it becomes funny. It's like, I feel like I understand fighting to the point where it's like I see... I'm having trouble seeing the point of fighting. It seems like a joke. I mean, it's a fun sport and... But there comes a time, I think, when it becomes... You know, that's the question. Uh, am I gonna put it ahead of me and make it more important than my own self? I mean, I feel like I'm not getting hurt, to be honest, but I do, I do take some hits in training. You know, that shit add up. I've been taking punches for 20 years. It d- feels like, you know. Um, it doesn't hurt until later. (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
Hmm.
- MPMike Perry
It hurts later and then, um, you know, so (tongue clicks) I don't know, man.
- JRJoe Rogan
Have you given thought to doing something else? Have you given thought to, like, what are you gonna do when you're done with this?
- MPMike Perry
Hmm. No, I feel like I just... Let's go into construction, just be an old guy.
- JRJoe Rogan
Construction?
- 1:00:00 – 1:15:00
Roy Jones Jr. …
- MPMike Perry
and people enjoy it. Enjoy the show, man, 'cause I'm gonna go for broke, headbutt your shit and fucking, and it don't matter if it's bare knuckle or if it's with gloves or boxing gloves. A boxing ring. Anthony Pettis just fought-
- JRJoe Rogan
Roy Jones Jr.
- MPMike Perry
... Roy Jones Jr., it was a great fight. Um-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- MPMike Perry
... you know, I think that's a great fight for me, a boxing match.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- MPMike Perry
And I love Anthony and God bless him and he's a competitor and, you know, it's, uh, I, it's just a fun little boxing match and if we could get paid good for it, I want to do it. Just show up and spar. I want to work with pro fighters all over, so I said I wanted to go work with Jamal Hill. What do you think I mean when I say work? We gonna put gloves on and try to swing at each other, so we might as well just fight. I'll fight Jamal Hill. God bless him too. I mean he'll probably beat my ass, he's too big, he's 205er, but give me a ch- I'll try it, let's go.
- JRJoe Rogan
I know you would.
- MPMike Perry
I'll try it.
- JRJoe Rogan
There's a, there's a fucking hilarious-
- MPMike Perry
Bigger they are the harder they fall, man.
- JRJoe Rogan
There's a hilarious video of you with Darren Till.
- MPMike Perry
Yeah, that's a good fight.
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- MPMike Perry
That's a great fight.
- JRJoe Rogan
But when you were saying to him, uh, "Do you want to spar?"
- MPMike Perry
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
And he thought you were saying, "Do you want to go to the spa?"
- MPMike Perry
Oh.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like-
- MPMike Perry
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... like, go get a massage.
- MPMike Perry
I... No, I think he knew what I meant.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, you think he knew.
- MPMike Perry
I think that was just his joke. He's a clever little fucker.
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- MPMike Perry
Uh, so, you know, but he's... That's a great fight. What did we-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- MPMike Perry
Where do we want to do that fight? Who wants to take that fight and get the viewers from it? Is me and Darren Till in any way? Either MMA, 'cause he did MMA.
- JRJoe Rogan
When he-
- 1:15:00 – 1:17:43
Hm. …
- JRJoe Rogan
It's interesting stuff.
- MPMike Perry
Hm.
- JRJoe Rogan
It's just, it's ... New advances like that in medicine are fucking wild.
- MPMike Perry
Yeah, I know. I gotta do that.
- JRJoe Rogan
To fix tissue. It's just, it's always better if you're at your best, especially n- when you're thinking about what you're doing.
- MPMike Perry
But I feel like th- that's what a camp is.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- MPMike Perry
You ... I get these issues.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- MPMike Perry
I've had this, this neck pain seems like my life force, the, that is, uh, driving my life. I feel like I never remember a time when I didn't have a pain in my neck or just a pain just walking around.
- JRJoe Rogan
In your neck always or just anywhere? Anywhere's understandable, but if it's in the same spot?
- MPMike Perry
Something's always hurt.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- MPMike Perry
Something's always hurt.
- JRJoe Rogan
Of course.
- MPMike Perry
My finger, I don't know.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- MPMike Perry
My neck.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. If you're sparring all the time, something always hurt.
- MPMike Perry
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
But, but in ... What I'm worried about is that, like, you ... The way you're describing it, it could be, like, a chronic injury that could be limiting your ability. Like, uh, Yoel, who we're talking about, Yoel Romero, he has his neck fused.
- MPMike Perry
Hm. What, what is that?
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, did you ever see a video of him ... Uh, he had an operation where it's like his disk was so fucked up they had to fuse the disks in his neck. They had to fuse the, the spinal columns. Have you ever seen a video of him running? There's a video of him running and his neck doesn't move, because it's, like, fused. It's cra- ... See, the video says, "Yoel Romero runs like his neck is fused."
- MPMike Perry
That's not real.
- JRJoe Rogan
Because it is.
- MPMike Perry
That's not what the back of his neck-
- JRJoe Rogan
I don't know if that, if it really looks like-
- MPMike Perry
He don't got it ... Oh, he do have a scar? What?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, yeah, he does. So that's, that's his ... His neck is fused.
- MPMike Perry
Dang.
