F3 energy drink, nootropics, and ‘does it work?’ banter

    1. NA

(drumming music plays) Joe Rogan podcast. Check it out. The Joe Rogan Experience.

    2. JR

Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day. (rock music plays) What's up, Quentin?

    3. QJ

      What's up, man?

    4. JR

How's it going? Good to see you, sir.

    5. QJ

      Yeah. Good to see you.

    6. JR

      Salud. Cheers.

    7. QJ

      Good to be here.

    8. JR

So tell me about your drink. What is this called? It's called F3?

    9. QJ

Yeah, F3. It's, um, it's a newer energy drink. It got, like, um, (cap pops) supplements and stuff in it, BCAAs.

    10. JR

Oh, this is good. (cap snaps)

    11. QJ

      Yeah.

    12. JR

Uh, ginseng, BCAAs, theanine, okay, good for the brain.

    13. QJ

What the hell is theanine? I don't know what that-

    14. JR

It's a nootropic. It's in, uh, this gum.

    15. QJ

      Oh.

    16. JR

      This gum, NeuroGum.

    17. QJ

      Yeah.

    18. JR

Yeah, I take a bunch of different brain supplements.

    19. QJ

Does it make your dick hard, though?

    20. JR

      No, doesn't help there.

    21. QJ

Oh. I've been looking for something.

    22. JR

      There's other stuff for that.

    23. QJ

      (laughs)

    24. JR

      You know? (laughs)

    25. QJ

But, but how good would it be if you can drink dick hardener?

    26. JR

I'm sure they have it. I'm sure there's, like, a, a Viagra soda somewhere-

    27. QJ

      Man.

    28. JR

... Thailand or some shit. (laughs)

    29. QJ

      (laughs)

    30. JR

      (laughs)

Rampage’s first pro fight and the Marvin Eastman lesson

    1. JR

Mm-hmm. That's nice. Dude, the first time I saw you fight was in, like, 2000, yeah, about 2000, I saw you fight Marvin Eastman.

    2. QJ

My first fight, my first professional fight?

    3. JR

Was that your first professional fight?

    4. QJ

Yeah, you saw that? At King of the Cage?

    5. JR

Yeah. Yep. I was there, live.

    6. QJ

You was there at King of the Cage?

    7. JR

      Yeah, yep.

    8. QJ

      Wow.

    9. JR

      Yeah.

    10. QJ

You saw me get my ass kicked.

    11. JR

You didn't get your ass kicked.

    12. QJ

      I did.

    13. JR

      No, you just lost.

    14. QJ

      Yeah, I did.

    15. JR

      Marvin Eastman was fucking good.

    16. QJ

Man, yeah. I was lied to, by the way.

    17. JR

      Oh, really?

    18. QJ

Yeah, they, um, they was doing him a favor and, um, they told me the guy was just a kickboxer and you know, I was a wrestler. I was like, "Oh, I'm just gonna take this guy down." It was a two weeks notice fight.

    19. JR

      Oh, wow.

    20. QJ

      Yeah.

    21. JR

      He can kickbox too.

    22. QJ

      Yeah. (laughs)

    23. JR

      (laughs)

    24. QJ

I, I didn't know about the wrestling. I knew he was a kickboxer.

    25. JR

      Yeah.

    26. QJ

He kicked me in the head. I was like, "Damn, that's my only time ever getting kicked in the head."

    27. JR

      Really?

    28. QJ

Yeah, my whole career. Go back and watch my fights. I never got-

    29. JR

      That's crazy.

    30. QJ

      I learned a lesson.

  3. 3:124:23

Leaving PRIDE, WFA folding, and UFC’s messy PRIDE acquisition

    1. QJ

Yeah. Yeah, that's why, um, that's why he was my first fight in, in the UFC, 'cause, um, I don't know if you, uh, know about this, but Dana White bought an organization just to get me 'cause I left PRIDE and I went to, uh, WFA.

    2. JR

      Oh, okay.

    3. QJ

And my, my manager at the time, he became, like, the president of WFA, so he had to stop being my manager and, um, I followed in the... then the company folded and, um, Dana bought the whole company so I can come over and-

    4. JR

So this was when you were leaving PRIDE.

    5. QJ

      Yeah, I-

    6. JR

When PRIDE, when the UFC had bought PRIDE.

    7. QJ

      This is before.

    8. JR

      Oh, okay.

    9. QJ

I left the, I left PRIDE right when they was going down.

    10. JR

Hmm. When the UFC bought PRIDE, they thought they were buying a whole organization and they didn't, they didn't get anything but a library. They got a video library.

    11. QJ

      That's all they got?

    12. JR

All the contracts were bullshit. Everything was bullshit.

    13. QJ

      Yeah.

    14. JR

That's why they never got Fedor. And that's why I think, um, m- well, it's like they honored people's contracts. Some people got great contracts. Like Mark Hunt apparently got a great contract, Alistair, a lot of these guys that came over had great contracts, but it w- Crow Kop, remember when Crow-

    15. QJ

      Yeah.

    16. JR

... Crow Kop came over? But it was, the whole thing was all fucked up. You know, it was run by the mob.

    17. QJ

      Yeah, it was crazy.

  4. 4:236:51

PRIDE in Japan: yakuza presence, cultural shock, and wild stories

    1. JR

What was it like being over there?

    2. QJ

Man, it was, it was crazy. It was surreal. I remember the first time I noticed that the mob had something to do with PRIDE. I saw these guys walking down a hallway, like, when we was doing, like, the, um, the piss test.

    3. JR

      Uh-huh.

    4. QJ

And I was coming back from the, um, bathroom with my cup and I just see these guys walk around in, like, nice expensive suits and then, everybody, uh, just put their head down, put their back against the wall and just bow.

    5. JR

      Whoa.

    6. QJ

I was like, "What the fuck is going on?" You know, culture shock. I had no idea.

    7. JR

      Right.

    8. QJ

And then, after a while, I asked somebody, they were like, "Oh, those, those are the bosses. Those are the yakuza."

    9. JR

      Did they have missing fingers?

    10. QJ

      Some of 'em did.

    11. JR

      Phew.

    12. QJ

You seen some of that shit over there.

    13. JR

      Bro.

    14. QJ

      It was crazy.

    15. JR

That is, that is a crazy way to gain entry, to fucking saw your finger off in front of everybody.

    16. QJ

I thought, I thought that, I thought that if you-

    17. JR

      If you did something bad.

    18. QJ

Yeah, if you fucked up, right?

    19. JR

      Yeah.

    20. QJ

I had a friend, I had a friend out there, his name was 36 and the guy took a liking to me and he was super cool, all tatted up, and I guess he was rich as fuck. When he found out I had, like, little Japanese kids, he, he said, "Hon, your s- your son needs this." And he, it was, like, a gold samurai helmet.

    21. JR

      Oh.

    22. QJ

He, he said, "Your s- this has to stay in your son's house." And, um, I, I showed it to my, my, my ex-wife, she was my wife at the time. She said, "Oh, yeah, I was going to have to get him this. He saved me a lot of money." And then, I asked her, I said, "How much is something like this cost?" She said, "Oh," she said, "probably like 30, $40,000."

    23. JR

      Wow.

    24. QJ

He gave me a gift. He just, and he had, like, a, a missing-

    25. JR

      Missing pinky finger?

    26. QJ

      Yeah.

    27. JR

      (laughs)

    28. QJ

But he was a, but he was a cool dude.

    29. JR

What do they do? They chop off one digit or two? How many digits they chop off on?

    30. QJ

I think he just, he just had-

Japan’s politeness, humor gap, and the population decline rabbit hole

    1. JR

Do they love Americans over there?

    2. QJ

      Yeah.

    3. JR

      Oh, wow.

    4. QJ

Te- tell me, tell me you've been there though.

    5. JR

I've only been there for one day.

    6. QJ

      Oh.

    7. JR

Just for the UFC and right back home.

    8. QJ

How could you do that? How you go there just ... That's a long flight.

    9. JR

      I had to. Too busy.

    10. QJ

      Yeah.

    11. JR

I just didn't have any time for anything else.

    12. QJ

      Yeah.

    13. JR

But it was beautiful. It's interesting how clean everything is. So clean and orderly.

    14. QJ

      Yeah.

    15. JR

And everybody like ... So many people walkin' on the street, nobody's bumpin' into anybody. Everybody's like very polite.

    16. QJ

Yeah, they're very polite but they're, they're, they're like robots, bro. I remember one time when I was fightin' there and this one guy on the other side of the street recognized me, but he wasn't sure and he was ridin' a bike and he was lookin' at me and wasn't payin' attention to where he was goin' and he fuckin' smacked the end of the back of the truck and fell down (laughs) off this bike.

    17. JR

      (laughs)

    18. QJ

We alls was laughin' our ass off, but the Japanese people ... No one laughed, no one tried to help him up or nothin'. He was hurt kinda bad and I woulda went over there and tried to help him, but it was like a busy street, so I was like, "Nah."

    19. JR

      Nobody even helped him?

    20. QJ

      No one even helped him.

    21. JR

      They just kept walkin'.

    22. QJ

Just kept walkin'. One dude stepped over him.

    23. JR

      Oh, Jesus.

    24. QJ

Just kept walkin'. No one laughed though, that was the ... That's the thing that-

    25. JR

      (laughs)

    26. QJ

... fucked me up. We was laughin' our ass off.

    27. JR

You don't hear about a lotta Japanese comedians.

    28. QJ

No, I, I heard that the ones that they do have, they come from, um, Osaka, not Tokyo.

    29. JR

      Oh.

    30. QJ

      It's crazy.

  6. 12:2915:32

The Ricardo Arona slam: mechanics, consequences, and leg-kick pain

    1. QJ

I remember one time I had a meeting with a big Yakuza boss. This guy was the biggest Japanese guy I ever met. He was like, uh, looked like he was like 6'6", and he was, like, ripped. Like twice my size, very muscular. And when I met him, it was right after I did that Rona slam.

    2. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    3. QJ

And I got really popular in Japan.

    4. JR

What year was that? I'm sorry, 2003?

    5. QJ

That was- that was actually 20 years ago.

    6. JR

      Oh, wow.

    7. QJ

    8. JR

      2004.

    9. QJ

Because I did it on my- I did it on my 26th birthday.

    10. JR

That... Dude, that is to this day the greatest slam in the history of the sport.

    11. QJ

      That is fucking crazy.

    12. JR

And a lesson for everybody that hangs onto a triangle when a dude's picking you up.

    13. QJ

All he had to do was let go of my head.

    14. JR

      All he had to do.

    15. QJ

That's all they had- I couldn't have picked them up.

    16. JR

And other guys did that with you. I forget who tried to get you in a triangle afterwards.

    17. QJ

It was Wanderlei. He grabbed my-

    18. JR

      That's right.

    19. QJ

... he grabbed my leg after that.

    20. JR

      Yeah, yeah.

    21. QJ

Yeah. And... But you know, I did that to Sakuraba but it didn't knock him out.

    22. JR

      Hmm.

    23. QJ

I- I slammed Sakuraba a couple times, but it was from an arm bar and stuff, though.

    24. JR

      Sakuraba was so tough.

    25. QJ

Oh, yeah. I saw him a couple weeks ago in Japan.

    26. JR

      Here it is, right here.

    27. QJ

      Yeah.

    28. JR

Bro, this is the- the absolute craziest, because you threw him over the top of your head like a pillow.

    29. QJ

      Yeah.

    30. JR

I mean, it's the greatest- the greatest KO slam of all time. I thought he was dead.

  7. 15:3218:34

Odd combat sports trends: leg-kick ‘slap fights’ and Karate Combat highlights

    1. JR

Have you seen that new stupid thing that they're doing, like slap fight?

    2. QJ

      Yeah. (laughs)

    3. JR

Where they leg kick each other?

    4. QJ

No, I haven't. No, no, no, no. I haven't seen that shit.

    5. JR

This is a new one. Have you seen it, Jamie?

    6. NA

I didn't see it, no, but...

    7. JR

I could send it to you if you want me to. I sent it to Dana. It's, uh, yeah, they're having slap fight competitions but leg kicks.

    8. QJ

      That's-

    9. JR

These dudes just standing in front of each other just teeing off leg kicks.

    10. QJ

      That's dangerous.

    11. JR

      Ugh. It's horrible.

    12. QJ

      Man, y- yeah, that could-

    13. JR

Did you find it, Jamie? I'll send it to you.

    14. NA

      Oh. How Kyokushin.

    15. JR

      Here you go.

    16. QJ

That can fuck you up real bad.

    17. JR

Oh, it's rough. It's rough to watch. And some guys are kicking, like, right... You're supposed to kick the thigh but some guys are kicking really kind of like right above the knee, and buckling... And you just stand there, you can't even move. You have to just eat it.

    18. QJ

Hmm. I wouldn't... I would... No, that's not my shit. How you feel about that slap fighting, though?

    19. JR

I don't... (sighs) I- I'm fully in support of anybody doing whatever the fuck they wanna do. I'm like, if you can bull ride, if you could G- B- BMX jump and skateboard and all that crazy shit where people are breaking their necks. Here it is, they're standing in front of each other. I feel like you should be able to do anything, but I wouldn't do it.

    20. QJ

      Oh.

    21. JR

'Cause getting hit is... It should be rare, and you should avoid it.

    22. QJ

Look, look, dude kicked him in the leg-

    23. JR

      Yeah.

    24. QJ

... then grabbed the top of his head.

    25. JR

      (laughs) Yeah.

    26. QJ

I- I would've smacked them just for that.

    27. JR

      I think they're friends.

    28. QJ

      Oh.

    29. JR

      It's like, "Sorry, bro."

    30. QJ

      (laughs)

  8. 18:3421:04

Steroids, TRT, and testing: PRIDE vs. UFC and the ‘TRT Vitor’ era

    1. JR

But man, that's crazy. It is, it's interesting when you watch an organization that tests versus don't test too, right?

    2. QJ

      Yeah.

    3. JR

      You know, 'cause-

    4. QJ

      How you feel about that?

    5. JR

(inhales deeply) I, I have two, two thoughts. One, I like to see older athletes compete. And if you get a guy who's like 35, 36 years old, if you let him juice, if you let him use testosterone, if you just do it sensibly, not crazy, but if he can go to a doctor, make sure it's only administered by a doctor so they're not self-administering, and make sure they test him to make sure they're not above a certain level, I don't have any problem with it. But when you get guys like what Vitor did, Vitor just (imitates electric buzz) fill him up, doc. (laughs)

    6. QJ

(laughs) He blew the fuck up.

    7. JR

He just like, take it to my eyeballs, just fucking (groans) . And man, when he was, TRT Vitor, to fans when they talk about it, like that was an era, when, that era, when he was on a tear, when he knocked out Luke Rockhold and knocked out Bisping and he was fucking everybody up, dude. He was fearless. But he was also like heavily enhanced. You know? Was not a normal human being.

    8. QJ

No. I remember the time when it was, when it was legal.

    9. JR

      Yeah.

    10. QJ

Yeah, and they fucked it up, 'cause I tried that shit after I got beat by Jon Jones. I was like, "Fuck, I must be getting old." And I tried it and it helped me out a little bit. Then they, they outlawed it. I said, "Fuck. I guess I'm back to the old me."

    11. JR

Yeah, they outlawed it. There was a lot of guys on it. (clears throat) And a lot of guys were abusing it. Some guy, like, um, some guys got pulled from fights 'cause they tested them the day of, and they're like, "There is no fucking way. You are so high. This is crazy." Nate Marquardt, they sta- they actually stopped the fight. They stopped it from happening. Yeah, they canceled the fight.

    12. QJ

Yeah. You know, in Pride they never test it.

    13. JR

They, well Anson Inoue told me that they had in capital letters, "We do not test for steroids-"

    14. QJ

      Yeah.

    15. JR

      "... in the contract."

    16. QJ

Yeah. But they'll test you for like weed and cocaine and all that shit.

    17. JR

      That's hilarious.

    18. QJ

But they wouldn't test you for steroids.

    19. JR

(coughs) So they tested you, they just didn't test you for anything that would actually help you fight.

    20. QJ

It seems like they kinda encouraged it.

    21. JR

Oh yeah, they definitely encouraged it.

    22. QJ

      Yeah.

    23. JR

They did with a guy I know. He went over there, there, and he was, you know, about, he v- wanted to fight at 170. He was like, "No, you fight at 185." And they're like, "We'll give you steroids." (laughs)

    24. QJ

(laughs) Everybody thought I was on steroids when I was fighting over there.

    25. JR

(clears throat) Well, you just had great genetics.

    26. QJ

      Yeah.

    27. JR

You know? Some people have great genetics and some people need steroids.

    28. QJ

Yeah. Uh, I, I, I always tell people, they look at me and look at some of the other fighters. You can look at my body and tell that I wasn't on that shit.

  9. 21:0425:34

‘Horse meat’ Overeem, enhanced eras, and Jon Jones PED ambiguity

    1. JR

Well, the difference is when they get tested. Like, when, w- the pre-USADA and post-USADA days are so interesting, because even though they outlawed testosterone, there's still guys like Overeem. There's n- there's not a, a chance in hell that guy was natural. It was, he was not natural at all. There's no way.

    2. QJ

      Yeah.

    3. JR

No way. Especially when he fought Brock Lesnar. But somehow or another he passed the test.

    4. QJ

      Yeah.

    5. JR

But the test the day of, like the day of like the weigh-ins test, that's nonsense. That is nonsense. Like, all the benefits are still there and all the stuff is out of your system.

    6. QJ

Bro was crazy. I, I used to fight over there with, uh, Alistair Overeem. He was like the bony 205er.

    7. JR

      Yeah, he was thin.

    8. QJ

He was thin. Then one day I saw him, I'm like, "Goddamn, what the fuck you doing?" He said, "Horse meat." (laughs)

    9. JR

      (laughs)

    10. QJ

      I'm like, "Okay, buddy."

    11. JR

Yeah, he was powerlifting. You remember when he got up to like 265? You know, when he w- won the K-1 Grand Prix?

    12. QJ

      Oh, yeah.

    13. JR

I mean, you couldn't hit him. He was a mountain of m- it was just covered behind muscle.

    14. QJ

      Mm-hmm.

    15. JR

And you know K-1 style, when they, like fight with like the earmuffs on.

    16. QJ

      Yeah.

    17. JR

When they're standing there, like, he was just, there was no chin. Y- you couldn't see it in there.

    18. QJ

      He was a bad mu-

    19. JR

      It was just-

    20. QJ

He won it too, didn't he?

    21. JR

Yeah, he won the Grand Prix.

    22. QJ

      Yeah.

    23. JR

      Which is crazy.

    24. QJ

He was a bad... I was always worried that I was gonna have to fight him in Pride. But I don't know why they never put me against him.

    25. JR

Bro, when he fought Brock Lesnar, if they kept the testing that way, he might've been the heavyweight champion. He might've stayed the heavyweight champion too. I mean, he was hard to handle-

    26. QJ

      Yeah.

    27. JR

      ... at that weight.

    28. QJ

      Yeah.

    29. JR

He was so big. And he had those elite kickboxing skills.

    30. QJ

      Yeah.

  10. 25:3433:11

Wanderlei stories, Crazy Horse chaos, and backstage fight lore

    1. QJ

Bro, he... That guy was so vicious. He just walked around mad the whole time. You know, all the fighters in Japan were scared of him. That's why he didn't like me 'cause I was never afraid of him.

    2. JR

      Mm.

    3. QJ

And one ti- the first time I had a run-in with Wanderlei, we were all staying at the same hotel and I'm walking back from press and I get in an elevator with my cornermen and the elevator opens up and there's Wanderlei in there with two of his cornermen. And I just, I don't notice and I just walk on the elevator. (laughs) And I turn around and my two cornermen took off. (laughs)

    4. JR

      No.

    5. QJ

So I'm in the elevator by myself with Wanderlei, and he looked at me like I was crazy 'cause I didn't take off with them. Like, he, he, he seemed like he was mad that I was breathing his same air in the fucking elevator.

    6. JR

      (laughs)

    7. QJ

He was like, "What are you doing?" They was talking shit in Portuguese and stuff like that. I was like, "Uh, I ain't, I ain't afraid of no motherfucking body." I was a kid then, too. But I just never been afraid of anybody. Then after I meet my, my two cornermen, "What the fuck happened to y- why the fuck y'all go..." Was like, "Shit, that was the ax murderer. I'm not getting in there with him."

    8. JR

      (laughs)

    9. QJ

"Just leave." I said, "So you just wanna leave?"

    10. JR

      Left you. (laughs)

    11. QJ

      (laughs)

    12. JR

They didn't even pull you out?

    13. QJ

      They didn't even touch me.

    14. JR

      Oh, that's so ridiculous.

    15. QJ

      Yeah.

    16. JR

I would've never trusted those dudes again.

    17. QJ

      Yeah. Fuck them.

    18. JR

      (laughs)

    19. QJ

Just left me with... But I was, I was, I was cool, but he never liked me.

    20. JR

Were you there when he had that, uh, fight with Charles Crazy Horse Bennett in the back room?

    21. QJ

No. No, I wasn't there, but-

    22. JR

Apparently, the story is Crazy Horse knocked him out cold.

    23. QJ

      Yeah. I heard that.

    24. JR

      That's what the story is.

    25. QJ

      Yeah.

    26. JR

The story is they ganged up on Crazy Horse. Crazy Horse was a wild dude. That dude was crazy. He was fun. I remember, uh, I got drunk with Crazy Horse one night. Me and I think it was Eddie Bravo went to see, um, Brock Lesnar's first professional fight in LA at the Coliseum.

    27. QJ

Mm. Was it with the UFC?

    28. JR

      No.

    29. QJ

      Oh.

    30. JR

No. I think it was with K-1. I think it was a K-1 fight in, in Los Angeles.

Modern power talk: Pereira, calf kicks, stoppages, and Rampage’s ‘extra shots’

    1. JR

No, it wasn't that good on the ground, but on the feet. I mean, I don't think he ever submitted anybody that I can remember, but he fucked a lot of people up, man. Anybody that stood in front of that dude went night-night. And you could see it, once he hit them, like, one time, the difference in the power. They'd be like, "Oh, God." It's cra- power like that is really crazy, wh- when pe- some people just have just, like... Did you watch the light heavyweight title fight this weekend?

    2. QJ

      Oh my God, yeah.

    3. JR

Oh my gosh. (laughs) Bo Le Tan, man. Alex Pereira. Th- th- that fucking power is nuts.

    4. QJ

You know what? I, I was thinking, like, how would I would've done if I was in my prime, fighting somebody like that? You can be honest.

    5. JR

You have very good wrestling skills. That's... The difference is you're very strong. You, you were always a very strong light heavyweight and you had very good wrestling skills. You know, he hasn't really fought anybody that's an elite wrestler yet. You know, I mean, think about who has he fought that could really wrestle? Prochazka is like a m- he's, he's got crazy KO power, um, he's got good karate skills, and he, I mean, he did win by choking out Glover. He did win with a, with a choke.

    6. QJ

      Mm-hmm.

    7. JR

So it's not like he doesn't have skills. But he's not, you know, he's not some D- Daniel Cormier type dude. It was just an elite wrestler.

    8. QJ

      I'm thinking-

    9. JR

Is this the video footage of the fight? It, it cuts off on the fight, so it's gotta exist somewhere else, but this is a documentary about Crazy Horse.

    10. QJ

      Oh, but is it-

    11. JR

      And it shows-

    12. QJ

Is it the behind the scenes?

    13. JR

It shows, like, a picture of them on the ground. It says, "Can't show the v- footage as YouTube will restrict the footage." What? YouTube restricts fights? It would, it could age-restrict the video and they're probably trying not to have that happen.

    14. QJ

      Hmm.

    15. JR

Oh, so they're just showing it? So he catches him in a triangle, with jeans on, chokes him to sleep, out cold, with his phone in his hand. (laughs)

    16. QJ

      (laughs)

    17. JR

(laughs) Wait, okay, what is that? Oh, that's his-

    18. QJ

      That's his, that's the pass.

    19. JR

      ... his, his past.

    20. QJ

      You know the-

    21. JR

Yeah. So he wakes him up, he's like, "Ah, shit."

    22. QJ

They shouldn't have had him in that locker room with them anyway.

    23. JR

No chance. Yeah. That's a terrible idea. And there's Wanderlei.

    24. QJ

      He's talking about it?

    25. JR

Yeah. There's an interview with him talking about it. He said, Wanderlei says he, "Just turned and hit me."

    26. QJ

Oh, he's trying to say he got sucker punched.

    27. JR

Probably did. But also, they were probably talking a lot of shit, and they probably thought they could keep talking shit before getting hit, and Crazy Horse was...

    28. QJ

Well, where was his corner man?

    29. JR

      Yeah.

    30. QJ

      Well, who was with them?

  12. 40:2746:09

Born-again moment, fasting before a title fight, and mindset swings

    1. QJ

And then the second time, I went through this crazy, um, religious thing where I got born again first day of training camp.

    2. JR

      Whoa.

    3. QJ

      Yeah. It's the cra-

    4. JR

      What happened there?

    5. QJ

Craziest, craziest thing in my life. Craziest... I, I still, I still... It's like it's the craziest thing that ever happened to me. Um, you know, uh, back then I was a single parent. I, I had got, um, custody of my son. He was three years old and just overnight I was a dad and, and I'm trying to fight in Japan and everything. And I don't, I don't... And after that, uh, after that Arona fight, and like I was saying, I was... I had got real famous in Japan and then I was going out partying a- a lot drinking and, and I never became an alcoholic because, you know, I, I, I, I don't like alcoholics and stuff like that 'cause my dad used to be one. I, I always drank socially, but then I started craving alcohol. So, long story short, I think, uh, one thing led to another and, um, one day I just had this crazy dream and I was, um, at home and, and it, it seemed like it was a devil in my chest with his hands like this. I'll never forget having these hands in my chest and had some female spirits around and he was saying, "It's okay. It's okay. It's okay." And I was, like, just laying there in my dream and I heard a voice say, "Do you know this man?" I was like, "No." Then he said, "Well, you're not okay. Well, it's not okay." I said, "Whoa," and I jumped up and I went to go... I was scared as fuck. You know, I'm a big bad motherfucker fucking people up, and I was scared. And I went to go wake my son up and, and he, and he was... He said he was dreaming. He wouldn't tell me his dream 'cause he didn't like me that much because, you know, I just got custody of him and I'm, I'm being the father figure, making him eat healthy and telling him no and stuff like that. So he wouldn't tell me a whole lot. But, um, he, he said he was dreaming. So my friend finally got it out of him. He said, "When my dad woke me up, God and the devil was fighting and, and God hit the devil with the sword. And when I woke him up, he just did like this. (gargling) Just purged a lotta white puss out his mouth."

    6. JR

      What?

    7. QJ

Yeah. Crazy. True story. So I take him... That's not even the, the scary part. That's, that wasn't what scared me. What scared me was I took him to preschool and I got back in my, my car and I must've left the radio on. As soon as I turned the, the radio on, it was, um, something... It was, uh, a commercial on. I didn't know at the time what commercial it was, but it said, "The curse of such and such. Your soul is mine." That scared the shit out of me.

    8. JR

      Whoa.

    9. QJ

I turned the radio off for six weeks-Like six- (laughs)

    10. JR

      (laughs)

    11. QJ

... like six weeks. I found out later it was a fucking, uh, commercial for, um, Revenge of the Mummy ride in fucking-

    12. JR

      (laughs)

    13. QJ

... Six Flags. That shit scared me straight.

    14. JR

You thought it was the devil talking to you?

    15. QJ

      Hell yeah.

    16. JR

      Oh my God.

    17. QJ

      Scared me straight, bro.

    18. JR

      Wow.

    19. QJ

And then that, that night, I couldn't sleep. Me and my son, we went to go sleep over at one of my friends' house, and this w- this is what, this is what brought me to, to being born again, what Christians say. I had to piss, and I was over at my friend's house. It was really dark. I told you how I was scared. I couldn't sleep in my room. Me and my son sleeping on the floor in my friend's room, and I had to take a piss. And my son was wetting the bed and he was lying a lot. I'm trying to teach him not to lie and teach him not to wet the bed, and I was f- (laughs) I was feeling wet the bed and, and blaming it on him-

    20. JR

      (laughs)

    21. QJ

... 'cause I was too scared to go to the bathroom. (laughs)

    22. JR

You were too scared to go to the bathroom?

    23. QJ

      Bro.

    24. JR

      That's so nuts.

    25. QJ

Yeah. And I, and I just, what I did, I prayed to God, 'cause my dad, my dad had just got saved like two years before and he said he was praying for me. And, uh, I remember when my dad said, he said, "Oh, when you pray to God, just say in Jesus' name." So, I was like, "God, I'm a coward right now. Just take this fear from my heart. In Jesus' name, I love you. Amen." And within two minutes, I was laughing and crying at the same time. And I rece-

    26. JR

      Wow.

    27. QJ

And I received the Holy Ghost's spirit. And I was, I wasn't afraid. I went to go use the restroom, my eyes were different, everything was different, right?

    28. JR

      Wow.

    29. QJ

That's the first day of training camp for Wale, the second fight. And then, so I'm training for Wale. My coach thought I was crazy. He brought a preacher in. He thought I lost my mind, thought I was crazy, 'cause you know, I'm totally ... You know how I was back then. I'm saying a whole bunch of crazy shit, doing a whole bunch of crazy shit. And, and again, I didn't cuss anymore. It just, just changed me right away. And, um, and then my coach found out I wasn't crazy, but it was the start of, you know, our relationship going south. And, um, I started training for, for Wale, then we got closer to the fight and I was like, "I'm gonna kill this motherfucker. I'm gonna kill him." And I'm thinking in my mind like, "I'm Christian now. I can't be thinking like that." This is the most confusing part of my life, man. Uh, I, so I fasted like an idiot. I fasted for like three or four days 'cause I read in the Bible when you fast, you get closer to God and all that stuff. And it's true, I got closer to God, but it wasn't a good idea to fast before a fucking championship fight and I'm not there.

    30. JR

How many days out from the fight were you fasting?

  13. 46:091:11:47

Weight, thyroid misdiagnosis, extreme conditioning, and fixing the diet

    1. JR

Do you eat a lot of carbohydrates?

    2. QJ

No. I, I cut that shit out.

    3. JR

      (clears throat) Yeah?

    4. QJ

      Remember, I got super fat.

    5. JR

      You-

    6. QJ

Espec- especially my last fight with Fedor, my God.

    7. JR

      Yeah.

    8. QJ

I got, I got super fat. I got, uh, mixed diagnosed with, with hypothyroid.

    9. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    10. QJ

And they had me on this fucking medicine and shit, and that shit fucked me up, man. Uh, I started training with this, um, this crazy social media, uh, guy, uh, name's Sean Rez. He's been my friend for years. I met him from, from one of my other friends. And I, I used to always see him. We used to kick it and party and stuff like that, you know, go out drinking and we eating up at his house with girls and stuff and hang out, and he was always ripped, like a Persian guy, but he, he looked like a fucking Viking, right? So one day I asked the guy, I'm like, "Man, how in the fuck you stay ripped like that all year round?" He, and he told me, he said, "Man, this is what I do." I said, "You on that shit, ain't you?" He said, "No, I ain't on shit." And he said, "I, I, I do two hours of cardio." He, he works out like two or three times a day and he don't eat carbs.

    11. JR

      How of- Jesus Christ.

    12. QJ

Yeah. That's my, that's my trainer, that's my coach, man. He changed my fucking life, bro.

    13. JR

      Damn.

    14. QJ

      I lost-

    15. JR

      That dude looks good.

    16. QJ

I lost 30 pounds training with him.

    17. JR

And so he does two hours of cardio how often a week?

    18. QJ

This motherfucker train like six, seven days a week.

    19. JR

So he does two, two hours of cardio every day?

    20. QJ

Well, uh, well now I think he dropped it down to an hour now, but when-

    21. JR

      (laughs)

    22. QJ

... when I asked him, he was doing two hours of StairMaster and I, and, so I did it with him, right? This motherfucker is on like level 13. I'm over there on level four, like fucking dying. He's on level 13 for like fucking an hour straight.

    23. JR

      Damn.

    24. QJ

He's the strongest mind I ever fucking met.

    25. JR

      Really?

    26. QJ

Yeah. He changed my life, he ... And, and he, he, he don't take, he don't take no shit. You know how I be trying to get out of shit? Like, "No, you meet me at the gym at this motherfucking time." He don't give a fuck.

    27. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    28. QJ

But he changed my life and changed my diet. So now I just, I, I don't know if it's like a carnivore diet, but I, I, I eat, um, I eat vegetables and stuff, but I, I mostly eat steak every day and sweet potatoes.

    29. JR

Yeah, so like more of like a, what would they call that? Paleo diet?

    30. QJ

Yeah. I don't got ... I just, I just eat what he tell me to eat.
