    1. JR

Joe Rogan Podcast, check it out. The Joe Rogan Experience. Train by day, Joe Rogan Podcast by night. All day. [upbeat music] Hey.

    2. JR

      Oh.

    3. MS

      Nice.

    4. JR

      Hey.

    5. MS

      Hey.

    6. JR

      We're back.

    7. JR

      What's up, bros?

    8. JR

So your boy Tommy was awesome.

    9. MS

      [laughs]

    10. JR

      Yeah, good.

    11. JR

      He was really cool.

    12. JR

Yeah, I actually listened on the way out to that one.

    13. JR

He's really fun. Tommy Lee's fun.

    14. JR

He's like a big kid, man.

    15. JR

      He is.

    16. JR

      A big kid.

    17. JR

      Yeah, like a 15-year-old-

    18. JR

      1,000%

    19. JR

... that just never, you know, had to grow up

    20. JR

Yeah, never went all the way up.

    21. JR

      There's no-

    22. JR

'Cause he, 'cause he didn't have to

    23. JR

... well, he got famous when he was 18.

    24. JR

      Exactly.

    25. JR

So he really never had to grow up.

    26. JR

      Exactly.

    27. JR

He just stayed Tommy Lee. [laughs]

    28. JR

Yeah, I'm glad you finally got to, uh, have him on.

    29. JR

      It was very cool.

    30. JR

      So it was good.

  3. 6:2512:58

Aging, training smarter, and why recovery becomes the real enemy

    1. MS

Oh yeah, by the way, Longo, you got him upset Because he's-

    2. JR

      Uh-oh

    3. MS

... he's like, "Man, I've been feeling good." He's like, "I'm, you know, I'm at the gym every day. And then I go fucking, I, I turn on Rogan and he's, he's bitching about being 58." I'm like, "What the fuck?" [laughs]

    4. JR

      He's 68.

    5. MS

      Oh.

    6. JR

      So basically, like-

    7. MS

      Wait a-

    8. JR

He's like, "Ay, what the fuck?"

    9. MS

      Yo, yo, yo

    10. JR

      ... he's complaining about being 58.

    11. MS

      Ray's, Ray's really 68?

    12. JR

      Ray's 68. He looks great.

    13. MS

      He looks great.

    14. JR

      He fucking looks real good.

    15. MS

      He looks great.

    16. JR

      Oh, oh-

    17. MS

      He's got dark-ass hair, right?

    18. JR

I know, right? What the fuck?

    19. MS

      And he don't have R-

    20. JR

      Check that out

    21. MS

... he don't have Ronald Reagan-

    22. JR

That can't be all his hair

    23. MS

      ... Ronald Reagan hair.

    24. JR

      [laughs]

    25. MS

      Right?

    26. JR

      He's looking, he's looking, he's looking good.

    27. MS

      That's great.

    28. JR

And then he asked me about, what the fuck did he ask me about?

    29. MS

      I love Rogan.

    30. JR

      About a pep talk.

  4. 12:5815:02

Belal vs. Askren? Medical reality after lung transplant + risks of immunosuppression

    1. MS

      Yeah. [laughs]

    2. JR

Oh, God. And some of the craziest knockouts we've ever seen come from that

    3. JR

      Big time

    4. JR

Like, w- we were just talking about Masvidal versus Askren the other night

    5. MS

      Oh, man.

    6. JR

      Oh.

    7. MS

      Hey.

    8. JR

He's supposed to be wrestling again.

    9. MS

      Oh, against Belal.

    10. JR

      Yeah. Is that real?

    11. MS

      I don't think that's a... Is that a good idea?

    12. JR

      No.

    13. JR

      It c- I would not-

    14. MS

I saw him talking the other day

    15. JR

Yeah, that freaked me out when I heard that, like

    16. MS

When he was talking, he was coughing a lot, and it's, I'm like, "You, listen, when you're... People who are athletes, they're afraid of wrestling, because it's exhausting. They don't wanna feel that, that burn in their lungs. You really wanna push yourself like that?"

    17. JR

      Yeah.

    18. JR

      Yeah.

    19. MS

      I worry about him

    20. JR

      I'm, uh

    21. MS

I just don't want him to get fucked up

    22. JR

      ... totally with you

    23. JR

I mean, he had double lung transplant surgery, like, how long ago?

    24. MS

That was like a year ago. [laughs]

    25. JR

It's like a fucking year ago.

    26. MS

    27. JR

      Maybe two years ago

    28. MS

      Maybe two years ago

    29. JR

      Yeah, maybe two years ago

    30. JR

I'd be worried even just about infection

  5. 15:0218:00

Extreme medicine tangent: pig heart transplants and transplant survival stats

    1. JR

Dude, we were just reading about this last night. Two people have had pig hearts transplanted in their bodies

    2. MS

      No way

    3. JR

Yeah, one guy stayed alive, I think, for 60 days, and one guy stayed alive for 40 days

    4. MS

Did they gain a lot of weight?

    5. JR

      [laughs]

    6. JR

      [laughs]

    7. MS

      [laughs]

    8. JR

      [laughs]

    9. JR

      [laughs]

    10. MS

Did they, did they, did they become fatties?

    11. JR

      They start f-

    12. MS

      [laughs]

    13. JR

... like, shoveling their face in the trash. [laughs]

    14. MS

Oh, wow. So wait, they have, you're telling me they have pig hearts?

    15. JR

      Hold on

    16. JR

      Yeah, yeah

    17. MS

Whose i- hold on. Whose idea was it to put a pig heart in another human being?

    18. JR

      That's fuck-

    19. JR

Uh, there's a, a, a bunch of doctors, 'cause apparently pigs' hearts for some reason, uh, are similar in function to a human heart

    20. MS

Say that about a sheep's vagina.

    21. JR

      [laughs]

    22. JR

      [laughs]

    23. MS

      Don't they? Don't they?

    24. JR

      They do. They do

    25. MS

      I don't, I'm, I'm no farmer-

    26. JR

      They do

    27. MS

      ... but that's what I heard.

    28. JR

      [laughs]

    29. JR

      That's what I heard, too

    30. MS

      So a pig's heart

  6. 18:0020:55

Askren’s prime vs UFC run: ragdoll wrestling, Maia matchup, and ‘boring’ stigma

    1. JR

And this is no disrespect to Askren. It's like, I think that guy's an animal. Like, I was one of the biggest promoters of trying to get Askren into the UFC when he was the champion of Bellator. And the ar- and then when he went over to One. And the argument was, like, he was boring. And I was like, "No, he's not boring. It's crazy that he could do this to these guys."

    2. MS

      Yeah

    3. JR

He could take guys like Douglas Lima and just ragdoll them to the ground, and they can't do shit to him.

    4. MS

      Right

    5. JR

Koreshkov, remember he did it to him?

    6. MS

Yeah, yeah, yeah. He wasn't, he wasn't boring at all.

    7. JR

      Bro.

    8. MS

      He was destroying guys, yeah

    9. JR

      Ragdolling these guys

    10. MS

      Yeah

    11. JR

They had zero chance in him not taking them down. It was zero chance.

    12. MS

      Mm-hmm

    13. JR

      And it was beautiful

    14. MS

      Right

    15. JR

It wasn't like Alex Pereira flying kneeing somebody in the face, but it's un- still another way to win

    16. MS

But it was like a man and a child

    17. JR

      Yes

    18. MS

      Yeah

    19. JR

It was crazy good. He was crazy good. And then we got him, like, a little late, right? We got him when he already had hip problems, and he eventually had to get a hip replacement after he got out of the UFC. You know, he had already been 15 years in combat sports, and then all the years of wrestling, and like... But those days when he was running shit at Bellator, he was a motherfucker, dude.

    20. MS

      He's, uh-

    21. JR

      He was a motherfucker

    22. JR

    24. MS

His fight with Demian Maia was fucking awesome.

    25. JR

      Amazing fight.

    26. MS

      That's a great... No, what's-

    27. JR

      Amazing fight

    28. MS

... the beautiful thing about that fight is they're both... It's almost, like, the closest thing to style versus style that we could have nowadays.

    29. JR

      Yeah.

    30. MS

Where, you know, they're both so, um, brilliant at the way they use their art, with him with his wrestling and him with his jujitsu. And in that fight, you got, you got to see some of that. With, with Ben, you got to see the takedowns, you got to see an omoplata reversal, uh, an, uh, leg lock ashi reversal. I mean, beautiful jujitsu.

  7. 20:5526:22

The Demian Maia stand-up controversy: refs, crowd pressure, and grappling integrity

    1. JR

Dude, Demian Maia got fucked harder than anybody ever got fucked by a referee's decision.

    2. MS

      Kamaru Usman.

    3. JR

      Yep. Ever.

    4. MS

      Right, right, right, right.

    5. JR

Nobody got fucked harder than Demian Maia got fucked.

    6. MS

That wasn't her, was it? Was it her? Who was it?

    7. JR

I don't know, and maybe we shouldn't even-

    8. MS

      Poor Herb DeBlogan

    9. JR

      ... pull her name up.

    10. JR

      [laughs]

    11. MS

      [laughs]

    12. JR

      Don't pull it up.

    13. JR

Yeah, that would be... I don't want, I can't do my boys like that, man. I gotta see them in a week.

    14. JR

I wanna think... I don't remember the, I don't remember who it was, but who I think is a guy who doesn't do it in the UFC anymore. But he had him on his back, one hook in, over-under. He had gotten to a position where, like, you are fucked. You're dry, and you got the best back specialist in the UFC.

    15. MS

      Yeah, for real.

    16. JR

Demian Maia was a... The way he ran through Neil Magny, like-

    17. MS

Oh, I know. Yeah, yeah, yeah

    18. JR

      ... holy shit, man.

    19. MS

      Yeah.

    20. JR

His jujitsu is so high level, and for you to get off, get him off, and Kamaru's one loss-

    21. MS

      Right, was to-

    22. JR

      Make a choke

    23. MS

... yeah. Why not, fuck, yeah

    24. JR

... Alex, Alex Correia's brother. So it's like, how many years ago was that? Like, and now you're fighting Demian Maia, and he's got your back. You're in danger.

    25. MS

      Yeah, yeah.

    26. JR

Like, you're in danger. And the referee separated them. And-

    27. MS

      So crazy

    28. JR

... never got to that spot again. Kamaru played it nice. He fought a great fight, won the fight. And you're like, damn, Demian had him.

    29. MS

      I know.

    30. JR

He had him in a, like, not 9 out of 10, but he had him in, like, a 6 out of 10 spot.

  8. 26:2229:13

BJJ’s global explosion: early Carlson/Henzo rooms and how UFC changed everything

    1. JR

I saw him when I first started jujitsu at Carlson Gracie's place.

    2. MS

      Did you?

    3. JR

Yeah, the very first year that I started jujitsu, it was, like, him, Vitor was there, Sergio Cohen, um, uh, Mario Sperry.

    4. MS

      Mm-hmm.

    5. JR

      It was crazy.

    6. JR

      Yeah.

    7. JR

      Like, I just stumbled-

    8. JR

They had, they had a ridiculous room back then

    9. JR

... I just g- lucked, lucked out and wound up watching these guys train when, like, Vitor was about to make his UFC debut. I was just starting out. I was like, "This is amazing."

    10. MS

Seeing all them guys in there?

    11. JR

      Dude-

    12. JR

      Jesus, yeah

    13. JR

... they were all in there, man. You could just come in off the street and see the best jujitsu guys in the world training.

    14. JR

      Right.

    15. MS

      That's crazy.

    16. JR

      It was crazy.

    17. MS

      Yeah.

    18. JR

And it was all, they were all, they were all fighting in, um, there was the, the other guy, what's his name? Carlos, fuck.

    19. JR

      Barreto?

    20. MS

      Bareto.

    21. JR

Bareto, that's right. Carlos Bareto. He was there, too.

    22. MS

      Mm-hmm.

    23. JR

There was a bunch of those Carlson Gracie team guys there. We just got lucky that this was the place to be.

    24. MS

      Triangel Randleman.

    25. JR

      Yeah, man.

    26. MS

      Triangel Randleman's-

    27. JR

      Yeah

    28. MS

      ... built like a He-Man figure.

    29. JR

Carlson had some savages, man. He really had a, a great team.

    30. JR

Yeah. Yeah, it was, uh, pretty-

  9. 29:1338:30

What actually ‘works’ in fighting: Wing Chun value, point-karate movement, and striking evolution

    1. JR

Yeah. I first started taking karate, and I thought karate was good until I stumbled into this really good taekwondo school, and I was like, "Oh, taekwondo's the shit." And then I started boxing, I'm like, "Oh my God, I can't box."

    2. MS

      [laughs]

    3. JR

And then I started kickboxing. I'm like, "Oh my God, you can kick my legs? I didn't know you can kick my legs. Like, this is terrible."

    4. MS

      [laughs]

    5. JR

And then I started doing jujitsu. I'm like, "Oh my God, I'm helpless."

    6. MS

      [laughs]

    7. JR

So it's like all these steps along the way. I was like, "It would've been nice if we knew what style was real."

    8. MS

      Yeah.

    9. JR

And this is what Bruce Lee tried and-

    10. MS

      Right.

    11. JR

Bro, when I was starting out in, like, '88 doing taekwondo, nobody knew nothing.

    12. MS

      Nothing.

    13. JR

      Nobody knew what worked.

    14. MS

      Right.

    15. JR

Everybody just, like, saw, "That guy b- beats people in that thing, and that guy beat... I wonder what would happen if they fought." No one knew.

    16. JR

      Right.

    17. MS

      Yeah, they thought w-

    18. JR

      When I saw UFC 2-

    19. JR

They thought wrestling was worthless. Grappling arts were worthless.

    20. JR

Yeah, yeah. But luckily I kn- I learned it was not worthless-

    21. JR

      Right

    22. JR

... in high school when I got my ass kicked. [laughs]

    23. MS

      [laughs]

    24. JR

      [laughs]

    25. JR

      So I was like-

    26. MS

Me too, man. I practiced it on the fucking wooden dummy to cha- the, nobody's punched my ass.

    27. JR

      Yes. [laughs]

    28. MS

Fuck, that's all I know. And, uh, every time I get into a real scrap-

    29. JR

      But he was-

    30. MS

... I'd go back to my season of eighth grade wrestling.

  10. 38:3043:21

Kickboxing and ONE FC: why elite striking deserves a bigger platform

    1. JR

Do, do, do you guys watch ONE? You watch, uh, kickboxing in ONE? Some. Did you see, uh, Jonathan Haggerty and Yuki Yoza? Uh, th- uh, it wasn't good for Haggerty, was it? No, he won. He figured him out. Haggerty was- Oh ... he's- He's the guy that beat that dude that was wrecking everybody with-

    2. MS

He's the, now he's the elbow guy

    3. JR

... yeah, he's a beast That's right He's a, well, he's just a full on Muay Thai guy. But- Yeah ... he beat him by continuous movement and switching stances. Oh, right. Yeah. Shit, I think I sent the video in our group.

    4. MS

Oh, I did s- I did see that

    5. JR

      It's a really, really-

    6. MS

      For sure, for sure

    7. JR

      ... technical fight

    8. MS

      For sure

    9. JR

Like, if you really like striking-

    10. MS

      Yeah

    11. JR

... it's a really technical fight. He did an amazing job of just constantly giving him different looks, and switching stances, and moving, and then catching him in exchanges. And, dude, it was fucking beautiful. Yeah, it was Because Yoza crushes everybody's legs. It was really sweet. Yeah, he just kept switching stances on him, too Just kept switching stances, and he did a lot of great boxing from the outside, too. Yeah, I did see this. It was just... But he never gave him the same look o- See that?

    12. MS

Look at that. That was a good switch

    13. JR

Like, he was switching- Look at that And then knees to the body, a lot of knees to the body. It was beautiful. Brilliant fight. I was just, uh, chatting with him on Instagram. I'm gonna try to get him on.

    14. MS

      Nice.

    15. JR

Bring him to America. Like, it's, this is what Zuffa should be promoting. You know, I mean, I know they love boxing. That's awesome. I'm glad they're doing that. But, you know, this is it.

    16. MS

      Yeah.

    17. JR

If you want another thing that's really exciting, it's striking. Just have only Muay Thai. Just have-

    18. MS

I'm, I'm just surprised they haven't done that yet

    19. JR

      It doesn't make any sense.

    20. MS

      It really doesn't.

    21. JR

'Cause that's what everybody likes to watch

    22. MS

Yeah, that's what everybody likes to do

    23. JR

Anyway, really Dana said to me, I don't know if he changed his opinion, but he said to me that people don't like kickboxing 'cause they think of, like, PKA karate from ESPN from, like, the 1980s. I'm like, "That's old people." [laughs]

    24. MS

      It is. Hey.

    25. JR

      Yeah, it is. Yeah.

    26. MS

And this is a different time

    27. JR

Old people don't even know what that is

    28. MS

      It is a different time

    29. JR

      That's old people.

    30. MS

      Right, yeah

  11. 43:211:14:08

Pop culture intermission: reboots, TV overload, and ‘bad-but-good’ movies

    1. MS

I saw the new He-Man movie, by the way.

    2. JR

      How was it?

    3. MS

      It was fucking good.

    4. JR

      Really?

    5. MS

The Masters of the Universe was good. I was worried, 'cause I'm thinking all the new reboots, and this and that, I go, "Is it gonna be too woke? Is it gonna be this?" It, it was fucking fun. It had a, uh, Thor: Ragnarok type feel, where it's just kind of fun and a little goofy, but not To the point where it's just takes you out of it.

    6. JR

      I heard-

    7. MS

You know what it is? I grew up with that He-Man.

    8. JR

      Yeah. I, yeah, yeah, yeah.

    9. MS

That was my, that was my, when I was a kid.

    10. JR

      Yeah, I remember.

    11. MS

      Around our age, right?

    12. JR

      Yeah, right.

    13. MS

So it did justice to that. Like, you know, it ma- it made it fun. It was a f- it was a fun-

    14. JR

      I heard Skeletor was awesome.

    15. MS

      Yeah. Jared Leto.

    16. JR

Wasn't that ... Yeah, Jared Leto played that. Yeah.

    17. MS

      Yeah.

    18. JR

I, I heard there was, like, some sort of crazy, like, he was wasn't allowed to do interviews-

    19. MS

      [laughs]

    20. JR

... wasn't allowed to talk to the rest of the cast.

    21. MS

      I heard that, too.

    22. JR

Why? Because they were worried he's gonna do nutty shit. Like, he, when the, in the Joker, he was, like, sending people dead rats in the mail and stuff.

    23. MS

      Oh, really?

    24. JR

[laughs] Yeah, doing, like, 'cause he was, he was in character.

    25. MS

      Yeah, yeah.

    26. JR

      You know? Fucking.

    27. MS

      That's wild.

    28. JR

That's weird. So they're like, "Yeah, you're gonna be an evil fucking Skeletor guy? No."

    29. MS

      Yeah.

    30. JR

"No, we can't let you be in character."

Fight forecasting: Conor vs Max, weight-cut debate, and ‘enhanced’ fantasy MMA

    1. MS

Speaking of Conor, how well does he do next week?

    2. JR

      Boy.

    3. MS

      Oh.

    4. JR

We're gonna find out. Um, we're really gonna find out what's going on if it gets into the second and third rounds. That's when we're really gonna find out.

    5. MS

      Well, yeah.

    6. JR

      Well, we'll, we'll know-

    7. JR

      We'll know immediately

    8. JR

      ... at that point

    9. JR

... but, I mean, whether or not he can really fight for five rounds, like, against a guy with-

    10. MS

I don't know if he can, man

    11. JR

... with a great gas tank.

    12. MS

      Yeah.

    13. JR

      Max has-

    14. JR

After, after five years of tearing your body up.

    15. JR

Yeah, it's... I... You don't know, right? 'Cause it's all in a vacuum. Like, there's some training footage of him beating guys up that you've seen, but who knows what he actually has been doing. We know he's been partying, but has he also been, like, really training? 'Cause if he's been really training, and he shocks everybody 'cause he's still got his skills.

    16. MS

      Yeah.

    17. JR

I mean, my God, if he, if he somehow or another sparks out Max in, like, the first round.

    18. MS

      [laughs]

    19. JR

Do, do you know how big he comes?

    20. MS

      That's... Oh, he's back.

    21. JR

      He's great.

    22. MS

      Right back.

    23. JR

      Oh, right back.

    24. MS

      I mean, he's-

    25. JR

      Like, right back.

    26. MS

      Yeah

    27. JR

Him and Justin Gaethje, the biggest fight in the history of the known universe.

    28. JR

      That would be sick.

    29. MS

      That would be sick.

    30. JR

Yeah. They go for the BMF title at 170.

  13. 1:26:372:00:09

New threats and matchups: Prates, Ian Garry, Islam at 170, and “don’t pull the brisket yet”

    1. JR

Everywhere. The dude I got my eyes on the most is Carlos Prates.

    2. MS

      Yeah, Prates.

    3. JR

I got my eyes on him the most.

    4. MS

      He's so accurate, man.

    5. JR

      Dude, that was-

    6. JR

He's ... That Jack Della Maddalena KO was crazy.

    7. MS

      I know.

    8. JR

Jack, Jack is so fucking good, and he's so t- he's so tough. And to watch Carlos just tee off on him like that.

    9. JR

      Yeah, he really did.

    10. MS

      Pick him apart.

    11. JR

Looked like target practice for him.

    12. MS

      Yeah.

    13. JR

      Bro.

    14. JR

Against such a high level guy.

    15. JR

      He was having fun

    16. MS

I know, that's the, ain't that the worst part?

    17. JR

Dude, Morales, Morales is a savage too, still

    18. JR

I know, but that fight, but, but save that fight. Morales versus Protez, save that fight.

    19. MS

      Yeah.

    20. JR

Wait till it's ready. Not yet.

    21. MS

      Yeah. [laughs]

    22. JR

It's like, don't pull the brisket out of the smoker just yet. Like, wait.

    23. JR

And I was, I was telling Matt, I saw some grappling, uh, like footage of Morales, and I mean, he looked pretty fucking good.

    24. JR

Well, he has a wrestling background, and if there's a way he's gonna get, uh, Protez, it's gonna probably be a combination of those things. 'Cause Protez just wants to stand.

    25. JR

      Yeah, of course.

    26. MS

      Yeah.

    27. JR

      And he's, he's built like a vi-

    28. MS

      [laughs]

    29. JR

Like, if you had to engineer-

    30. MS

      [laughs]

Dirty tactics, fouls, and officiating: Big John’s jokes, eye pokes, and point deductions

    1. MS

Yeah. You know, I like Big John. You know one thing I don't like that he does?

    2. JR

      What?

    3. MS

      Uh, it always irks me.

    4. JR

      What?

    5. MS

Big, Big John McCarthy. I like, he, when they won the title, he was my guy, but, uh, I hate this. Man, as you fucking savages know, when you're in there, you're in a certain mindset, right? You got a guy looking to do bodily harm to you. You're looking to fucking take him out any way possible. If there's a foul or something, now you're in this mindset. So now you got this big fucking guy, "Hey, uh, what do you see? You see ugly?"
