Cold open chaos: trampolines, bizarre bags, and the “Brass & Glass” gift

    1. CW

      Life hacks 111. One-

    2. YU

A hundred and eleven life hacks episodes.

    3. CW

      (laughs)

    4. YU

      (laughs)

    5. CW

Wow. (laughs) Just to recap, you've-

    6. YU

      Yeah.

    7. CW

      ... bought a trampoline.

    8. YU

      Yes. Like a ... it's ... if you imagine a big trampoline-

    9. CW

      It's a little one.

    10. YU

      ... smaller one.

    11. CW

Yes. And you're going to ... that's going to be your thing?

    12. YU

      I am doing that.

    13. CW

      Bouncing?

    14. YU

      I've been ... yeah.

    15. CW

      Okay.

    16. YU

      Is it-

    17. CW

      (laughs)

    18. YU

What is funny? Oh. Oh, the condoms.

    19. CW

      (laughs)

    20. YU

      (laughs)

    21. CW

      No. No.

    22. YU

      No? What? (laughs)

    23. CW

No. No. (laughs) See, in that bag you have-

    24. YU

      Mate-

    25. CW

      ... a MacBook-

    26. YU

      I'm crying.

    27. CW

      ... condoms and croissants.

    28. YU

      And stethoscope.

    29. CW

      (laughs)

    30. YU

      Oh. Absolutely brilliant.

  2. 1:324:23

Protein shake on cereal: Barebells as a high-protein “milk” substitute

    1. CW

Um, what I am going to do though, if you know what Barebells are, they are a protein shake, pre-made protein shake. Absolutely fantastic, tastes lovely. Partnered with the company from NOCO and you can win a crate of them. All that you need to do is share this episode, tag me in the share, @chriswellex, wherever you follow me, uh, share this episode up, and I'll choose someone and send a case of Barebells out to you. Um, and my first life hack is-

    2. YU

Can I ask a question first?

    3. CW

      Yeah.

    4. YU

      Are they not protein bars?

    5. CW

      They also make milkshakes.

    6. YU

      Do they?

    7. CW

Yeah. I've got some in there. Do you want one to take away?

    8. YU

      Yeah.

    9. CW

Yeah. So my first life hack is, replace milk on cereal with Barebells white chocolate.

    10. YU

Okay. I'm on board with that.

    11. CW

      20-

    12. YU

You have a lot of cereal, don't you? I have a lot of cereal.

    13. CW

20 grams, 20 grams of protein instantly added onto whatever your cereal is for the day.

    14. YU

Oh, my God. I'm going to have to make it my life hack.

    15. CW

I'll just give you one. I'll just give you one.

    16. YU

      What?

    17. CW

You can't take my life hack.

    18. YU

No, no, just the type of cereal. (laughs) Well, I mean.

    19. CW

      Oh.

    20. YU

I mean. Oh, right, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    21. CW

Okay. So granola, it works very well with granola. Like white chocolate, Barebells milkshake, uh, protein shake, granola, unbelievable.

    22. YU

      Is it-

    23. CW

      Macros are fantastic.

    24. YU

So it's higher calorie, slightly higher cost, I imagine. Much higher cost, like-

    25. CW

      Not yet.

    26. YU

      ... but must be tasty.

    27. CW

      Oh, it's so good.

    28. YU

What sort of granola do you have? Don't ask him this question 'cause then I know he'll get excited. What sort of granola would you go for?

    29. CW

      Mine's ASDA own brand.

    30. YU

      Yes.

  3. 4:238:25

SodaStream, fizzy water economics, and appetite suppression debates

    1. CW

'Cause I know you think this sort of thing is a bit silly, but a SodaStream.

    2. YU

      Oh.

    3. CW

You got this for Christmas, right?

    4. YU

I did. It was a present.

    5. CW

It is ... so fizzy water, sparkling water, is when you add it up, quite expensive and also a faff. So if you were to go and buy a lot of sparkling water, go on.

    6. YU

How is buying sparkling water more of a faff than having to make the fucking stuff yourself?

    7. CW

Because it's, it's easy to make it. So you ... under the tap, button, done.

    8. YU

What Johnny likes about it is that-

    9. CW

      Litre of sparkling water.

    10. YU

... he can shout the flavor of the (laughs) of the water-

    11. CW

      (laughs)

    12. YU

... in, in the room and then it, it's the same as that other stuff that Sam has been talking about.

    13. CW

      So LaCroix.

    14. YU

So he's talking about LaCroix, yeah. So ... Lemon.

    15. CW

      (laughs)

    16. YU

And then you're like, "Oh, it's-"

    17. CW

It i- ... that's the best descript- did I tell you that?

    18. YU

      Yeah.

    19. CW

Yeah. So I read that description about LaCroix, and it's perfect. It's exactly what it is.

    20. YU

The ... wh- what is it? While you're drinking it, it's as if someone just-

    21. CW

Someone shouts, like, "Lime," next door.

    22. YU

      Oh.

    23. CW

And that's, that's the amount of flavoring there is in that.

    24. YU

      Okay. (laughs)

    25. CW

Um, but it's great for appetite suppression. So if you're fasting and if you're not like these two and you have to count your calories in order to lose weight or manage your body weight, um, then having sparkling water instead of normal water, having carbonated drink is great for appetite suppression. It's also really nice, so you get like- Why not, why not Diet Coke?

    26. YU

      Or, like, green tea?

    27. CW

      Caffeine and tastes awful.

    28. YU

      Okay. (laughs)

    29. CW

Why not, uh, diet Sprite, Sprite Zero?

    30. YU

      No reason. Taste and preference.

  4. 8:2511:20

Granola obsession, stress weight swings, and “add grated cheese to everything”

    1. JO

Um, before I forget, just while we're on the granola thing. If you follow us on Instagram, you'll, you'll know that I have got a clinical addiction problem to ASDA's best hazelnut dark chocolate cherry granola. Absolutely on another level. Like, and the, the problem is I get ASDA delivery and I get anxious when there's less than three bags in the house. So I've always got maybe 10 bags of it at one time.

    2. CW

      Are they quite small bags?

    3. JO

      500 gram or like 700.

    4. 'Cause it's, like, the finest range, isn't it? So, like, th- yeah.

    5. They look at it and think, "Well, a normal person-"

    6. CW

Comes in a single bowl, doesn't it?

    7. JO

Yeah, a normal person would only have a sprinkling maybe.

    8. I think-

    9. But Youssef's got a bag a day.

    10. ... they're, like, 750 or, or, yeah, about 750 grams a thing.

    11. CW

It's the staple of your diet, isn't it?

    12. JO

      It are, man.

    13. CW

Man, I'm telling you, add a Barebell's white chocolate on top of that and it will be-

    14. JO

      Too much to handle.

    15. CW

... it'll be enough that it should probably be on admireme.vip.

    16. JO

      Like-

    17. Just bowl, a video of a bowl of it slowly rotating. (laughs)

    18. Oh, I would subscribe to that.

    19. CW

(laughs) I would as well. Cereal porn.

    20. JO

The fact that you have a granola problem but still don't gain weight is insane to me.

    21. So actually that's my next life hack. I m- I may as well bundle it in, but, like-

    22. CW

      All right.

    23. JO

... since we're talking of, like, how... And this is just because some of us, our weight gravitates, like, up or down depending on-

    24. CW

      Yeah, yeah.

    25. JO

      ... our disposition.

    26. CW

      Mm-hmm.

    27. JO

And I've noticed this a lot with a lot of the new doctors starting, that you see people's weight distinctly go, like, up or down depending on their-

    28. CW

Right, like their, how busy they are.

    29. JO

How, well, like, what their coping strategy is, I suppose. So, like-

    30. CW

      Right.

  5. 11:2014:17

Travel packing made easy: foldable drawstring day bag + portable travel safe

    1. CW

Um, next up. So if you are going on holiday, I advise that you pack a small drawstring bag. So if you remember about the size of an A3 piece of paper, two A4 bits of paper side by side. It's like the sort of thing you'd have taken to the swimming baths as a kid.

    2. JO

      Mm-hmm.

    3. CW

Do you know what I mean?

    4. JO

I know exactly what you're saying.

    5. CW

      Like a drawstring backpack.

    6. JO

      Yeah.

    7. CW

Um, and Reebok make one which has got a single zip pocket-

    8. JO

      Ooh.

    9. CW

... across the front of it. And that's it, it's just a drawstring bag. And it is the single best thing that I've ever taken to, for going away with, 'cause you've got your big backpack that's probably maybe got laptop, electronics, sunglasses, other stuff like towel and things, or maybe not even towel, that stuff in. Then you've got a suitcase that's o- and this is even if you're just going for a weekend.

    10. JO

      Mm-hmm.

    11. CW

But you need...... I'm, I'm quickly going to the beach, I want to throw my towel, s- swim shorts, sunglasses, and Kindle into something. And it's just that, and you can fold it up inside of another bag.

    12. JO

      Fully behind that.

    13. Yeah.

    14. CW

It is so good. And, uh, I forgot it when I went to ... on one of the trips this year, I forgot the bag, and the, the holiday was essentially pointless.

    15. JO

      Really inconvenient. (laughs)

    16. CW

Yeah. Every ... I was like, the, the difficulty level's just been increased by at least 50% and everything that I'm doing-

    17. JO

      That's the act of life.

    18. (laughs)

    19. Yeah.

    20. CW

Or I'll take the big bag, take my big backpack-

    21. JO

Do you put passport in there?

    22. CW

No. So I have a travel safe.

    23. JO

      Wow.

    24. CW

Which is a, um, small oval lockable, uh, foam interiored thing-

    25. JO

      Yeah.

    26. CW

... that then has a chain, like a kind of like a, a plastic covered chain. It comes off and you can hook that round something. That was when I was traveling and I didn't know if there was going to be safes in some of the hotels.

    27. JO

And that's a great idea, that.

    28. CW

      10 quid.

    29. JO

That should be the life hack.

    30. CW

Well, it's both of them, it's both of them now.

  6. 14:1720:19

Supplements that don’t taste awful: chocolate-flavor rule, greens powder, and beef isolate

    1. JO

Amazing Grass, s- greens powder. So the reason why-

    2. CW

      All right.

    3. JO

Oh, I've tried that. The one you gave me.

    4. Yeah, the chocolate one.

    5. CW

      Yeah.

    6. JO

Yeah. So they make one that has cocoa in it. And so I'd heard this concept and I, I, I, I think I ... so this is a separate life hack, which is if you're buying flavored things, get chocolate flavor. Because chocolate flavor-

    7. CW

      Mm-hmm.

    8. JO

... is very easy to naturally flavor with cocoa.

    9. CW

      Oh, okay.

    10. JO

So when you get a chocolate flavor something, it typically tastes pretty authentic. If you get a strawberry, banana, vanilla, whatever.

    11. I've learned that the hard way.

    12. It'll taste a bit off. I mean, I mean-

    13. CW

      You're, you're patient zero for-

    14. JO

      You're so off-piste with flavoring, it's-

    15. Well, I've got 10 kilos still to ... well, the other half of the 10 kilos to get through.

    16. CW

      Birthday cake?

    17. JO

      Pina colada.

    18. Pina colada. But birthday cake, never again. That was terrible.

    19. CW

(laughs) What do you mean never again? You've got five kilos of pina colada.

    20. JO

      Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've got-

    21. 10 kilos of pina colada.

    22. CW

      No.

    23. JO

Yeah, I'm just halfway through. But the, the birthday cake, it's a bit salty. It's like eating salty dough with hun- actual hundreds and thousands in the way. Who wants that in their protein shake? Like-

    24. Someone who orders birthday cake Way.

    25. CW

      Yeah, yeah.

    26. JO

But yeah, so they do a, they do a cocoa, like a chocolate flavor greens powder that has ... it is honestly like compared to your typical greens powder-

    27. CW

      This, so the-

    28. JO

      It's honestly palatable.

    29. It is, yeah.

    30. CW

The level up is purely because of taste?

  7. 20:1921:23

Commitment-by-default: buy two event tickets, then pick the plus-one later

    1. JO

... this is Paul Turner's ... Paul, not Small. He has said whenever something comes out, like a, an event comes out and tickets are six months in advance, whether or not you can go, buy two. Because then you've bought one and then you can just invite someone later. You don't have to pick who it is, you don't have to arrange it. Just closer to the time, you can be like, "Oh, Derren Brown's coming to town, I've got two tickets. Do you fancy going?" And there's like ...

    2. That's a great tip, that.

    3. Absolutely.

    4. CW

It's a good one. I've, I've low-key employed it myself previously and benefited from it. Brian Cox took my mum.

    5. JO

Brilliant. Like y- you can always find someone to go with you to a cool event.

    6. As long as it's good things.

    7. Well, yeah. (laughs)

    8. CW

Yeah. If it's something really weird, yeah.

    9. JO

      Then that's the key thing.

    10. Then you're really gonna have to try and convince someone to come to, with you, yeah.

    11. CW

"Guys, does anybody fancy going to the new Dungeons and Dragons launch or..."

    12. JO

So, so if, so if that's the case, then, like, that's a really fundamental, like, you've gotta reevaluate your friends, like if there's nothing that you can do or trust.

    13. CW

Or, "There's a Warhammer painting workshop happening in the back end of the town wall this weekend."

    14. JO

So we have the monocle then.

    15. I think I'd go to both of those, but just out of intrigue. I probably wouldn't stay very long.

    16. CW

Very voyeuristic for you, isn't it?

    17. JO

      Yeah.

  8. 21:2325:30

Read long-form properly: Send-to-Kindle Chrome extension vs Pocket

    1. CW

(laughs) Um, okay. Right, this one. Oh my God. So send to Kindle extension for Chrome on MacBook. Wow. This-

    2. JO

You, you're getting so into Kindle these days.

    3. CW

      Oh, fuck, man. I-

    4. JO

So I've started using my Kindle.

    5. CW

Paperwhite. Paperwhite. Yeah. So I love my Kindle. I don't like reading articles on my phone because phone, the way that I use my phone is very skittish, flicking around between apps. I'm in the rhythm of WhatsApp and Instagram and stuff. Just i- it's, it's how I operate on there. I'm not good for deep reading. Laptop as well, it's just, you gotta be at my desk standing or sitting or doing whatever. Kinda not, not for me. So Kindle now is a article reader as well. Previously, my solution to this was use Evernote web clipper, clip to Evernote, export as a HTML file, repurpose and export as a PDF, then use the send to Kindle. Oh man.

    6. JO

      Oh my god.

    7. Oh, dear.

    8. CW

It was so arduous, man. But I just wanted it 'cause y- you need to have it so it looks nice on Kindle. So it needs to be in PDF, it needs to have converted, it needs to have stripped the formatting but it needs to have kept ... Do you know? All of the different stuff.

    9. JO

      Mm-hmm.

    10. CW

It was just ugly. Real bad process. And then one day I just Googled, "Is there a send to Kindle?" There is a send to Kindle extension for Chrome that you can search now. It'll be in the show notes below. And you just press one button, previews the whole thing, makes it the perfect size, allows you to zoom in and out with the font size that your preferences are on your Kindle Paperwhite. You can edit before it sends. In-browser, you can edit the title and the author of the article that you're talking about in case sometimes it doesn't pull through the r- quite the right metadata. And it just sends it perfectly formatted to your Kindle instantly. Every Kindle device that you've got has that article.

    11. JO

As a ... Does it save it, like, in your library?

    12. CW

      Yeah.

    13. JO

      As a-

    14. CW

In the cloud. Every ... So it'll be on Kindle on your phone, Kindle on your whatever. Man, it ... And so I'm ... As opposed to sending stuff to Pocket now. Pocket for me is low-grade shit. Pocket is like sub-five-minute reads, sub-ten-minute reads.

    15. JO

      Mm.

    16. CW

But if I've got Meditations on Moloch, hour and a half read-

    17. JO

      Ah.

    18. CW

... this big monster of a blog post I've wanted to do, and I can just read it like a book. And you can highlight passages. You ... That will save back out in ... Oh, man. It's phenomenal. I haven't had, I haven't had something that's changed the workflow and improved my life that much in ages. Send to Kindle for Chrome is incredible.

    19. JO

So I, the problem I always have with, like, 'cause l- you have Tobi and Pocket, like all these things to, like, delay the time you're gonna read something.

    20. CW

      Mm-hmm.

    21. JO

What I've never really had is a time when I would definitely read it.

    22. CW

      Mm-hmm.

    23. JO

But something that I do is re- or only very recently just read a bit of my Kindle in the morning, because it means I don't have to use my phone or my laptop or anything. So if I can take something from that and read it then, far easier.

    24. So I think quite, (clears throat) quite a good solution to that is either, like, attach it to a thing that you do that y- I, I guess, like, you haven't got a long commute or anything so it doesn't apply for that.

    25. CW

      Mm.

    26. JO

But-I find morning when I'm getting up, brushing teeth, making a tea or whatever, is th- the first sort of 10, 15 minutes, great time for just opening either Pocket, Evernote, something like that, swiping down with two fingers from the top of the iPhone, and then it just reads the article. So it's like an audio book or just listening to an actual audio book in that time. So I wonder whether-

    27. YU

      So you're saying that while-

    28. JO

      ... while I'm waiting. (laughs)

    29. YU

... like, while you're waking up-

    30. CW

      Mm-hmm.

Low-cal ice cream that’s worth it + the psychology of finishing the packet

    1. JO

      Ben & Jerry's Moophoria.

    2. CW

Is this one of those low calorie?

    3. JO

It is, but so lo- low calorie ice creams are, like, all the-

    4. CW

Ten a penny at the moment, aren't they?

    5. JO

This, this sort of thing won't, won't matter to you guys.

    6. CW

      Ten a penny.

    7. JO

'Cause you'll just eat the normal ice cream-

    8. CW

      (laughs)

    9. JO

... and still not gain weight.

    10. CW

      (laughs)

    11. JO

But for people who are, like, uh, in the Halo Top crew, like Halo Top compa... Uh, so Halo Top is between 280 and let's say 400 calories a tub.

    12. CW

      Mm-hmm.

    13. JO

Moophoria is slightly higher, so it's around 600, 700 calories a tub.

    14. CW

      (gasps)

    15. JO

But it's way, way more than a proportional increase in taste for the increase in calories.

    16. CW

      Okay.

    17. JO

      Like, I mean, it's Ben & Jerry's.

    18. CW

Is it Moophoria? How do you spell Moophoria?

    19. JO

I think that's what it is.

    20. CW

      What's the flavor?

    21. JO

But... So they... I think they only do, like, three or four. There's like a caramel one, chocolate one.

    22. CW

Hang on. So is Moophoria the...

    23. JO

It's a range that they do.

    24. CW

      Yeah. Okay.

    25. JO

So, like, they're all purple tubs.

    26. CW

      Yeah.

    27. JO

So they have s- like some Ben & Jerry's flavors are just like a lower calorie version. They used to do a frozen yogurt, like back in the day, like back in like 2010.

    28. CW

      Mm-hmm.

    29. JO

They've stopped doing that, and they brought this out now. It's very, really good.

    30. CW

So how much of a tub do you need to eat to be satisfied? 'Cause the problem I have with Halo Top-

Backpack rabbit hole + Citymapper as the essential big-city navigation tool

    1. JO

This is the Nomo bag. These are incredible. I've had, I mean it's looking a bit tatty now because I've had it for 10 years. But they are designed with MacBooks in mind, so you can slip your little pink MacBook in there, and then it's got a special pocket, as you can probably see, that's lined with very MacBook friendly stuff. Um, this has been all around the world.

    2. (laughs)

    3. Just absolutely great for transporting your MacBook around, um, because it...

    4. (laughs)

    5. What is funny?

    6. Oh, please can we try and get, get it on camera? What you won't have seen was just-

    7. (laughs)

    8. CW

      (laughs)

    9. JO

      ... oh, the condoms.

    10. No, they're-

    11. No? What?

    12. No. (laughs)

    13. Oh, no.

    14. What the fuck? (laughs)

    15. (laughs) Well, I've really done it there. But...

    16. CW

      (laughs)

    17. JO

I've got condoms too, what about...

    18. So you, you just got a Mac, a MacBook-

    19. Why have you got condoms in a... ? (laughs)

    20. CW

      (laughs)

    21. JO

You've just got to have the essentials, but, like, what were you originally laughing at? Like-

    22. Oh.

    23. The croissants?

    24. See, (laughs) in that bag you have a MacBook-

    25. I'm crying.

    26. ... condoms, and croissants.

    27. Yeah. (laughs) And a stethoscope.

    28. (laughs) So your bag contains a pink MacBook...

    29. CW

No, let's not make that sound on the mic.

    30. JO

      Oh, yeah, it's-

  11. 38:0240:47

Journaling the worst part of your day—and forcing a reframe

    1. JO

Here's me. Uh, this is a journaling thing, for those people who do journaling, which I think is both of you.

    2. CW

And video guy Dean as well.

    3. JO

      And Dean.

    4. The XD.

    5. So, there's a, a lot of journals do like daily wins, daily gratitude, all that sort of thing. Something that I recently was, it was kind of suggested I try was journal one thing that went badly in the day. So, journal like the worst thing that happened, and then try and flip it. So like, "Why is that? Why is it a good thing that that happened? And then what am I going to do about it tomorrow?" And it's just constant evolution of you take the wo-, take the- the worst part of your day and try and reframe it.

    6. CW

Can you give us some examples of things that you've written?

    7. JO

(exhales) I mean, it's like, it's so, it'll be all-

    8. CW

      Tiny.

    9. JO

      ... propane, very specific things-

    10. CW

      (laughs)

    11. JO

      ... about one specific person.

    12. But say, you're right, like finishing that with, "This is good because..." and then forcing yourself to come up with an answer.

    13. Yeah. 'Cause there's always, you know like, you know the Jocko Willink video? You know, the good, reload. There's al-, there is always something good.

    14. CW

Well, I think there's, "Had a training session, um, where I was underslept and undereaten. Perfectly fine. I learned how, uh, I was able to get through a session under not perfect circumstances."

    15. JO

      Yeah, got to practice that.

    16. CW

      Yeah.

    17. JO

Yeah. So like, any, an argument that you had or something that went wrong, like, "Injured my back." Like, why is that good? Well, it's an opportunity to warm up properly in future or et cetera. So it's just-

    18. Got injured? Good.

    19. CW

      Good.

    20. JO

      Lost your battalion? Good.

    21. Brilliant. (laughs)

    22. CW

      So, Jocko, mate.

    23. JO

      Look, not everything's fucking good.

    24. Got shot.

    25. So, Ben, Ben shared something with me that, um, has ruined Jocko for me forever.

    26. CW

      Oh, what?

    27. JO

So, you know how Jocko's Instagram's like just photos of him at 4:00 AM, 4:00 AM at his watch a lot

    28. YU

He takes them in batch and then shows them as a-

    29. JO

No, no, it's not that. It's a video of him, and then the other thing is a photo of the sweat on the floor.

    30. CW

      Yeah.

  12. 40:4747:04

Micro-hacks from the crowd + email signature upgrades that keep hyperlinks

    1. JO

So, okay, rapid fire round. These are the suggestions. "Buy loose bananas instead of packs for less waste at various levels of ripeness." That's from Paul McGurrin. Very clever. So, you, you buy a range of bananas ranging from the most ripe-

    2. CW

      Mm-hmm.

    3. JO

... and then like as the week goes on.

    4. So you never get caught out.

    5. You have a- a conveyor belt. Very good. Uh, Page Powerlifts, we're not a fan of this one.

    6. CW

      (laughs)

    7. JO

Sorry, Tom. "Drive 10 miles per hour slower on the motorway."

    8. So that implies you are-

    9. Fuel economy.

    10. ... you're driving too fast, in which like, in which case, like obviously you- you might get a ticket. There's a risk with that.

    11. To be honest, I probably do need to do that because I- I think like it just takes out the rushing mindset. Like-

    12. CW

Well, I think you- you tend to get in a lot of car crashes.

    13. JO

      Yeah. I-

    14. You do like, you love a good, a good bump, don't you? (laughs)

    15. I love a good bump. So yeah, I need to maybe just slow down a bit. Nick Montes, hi. Uh, Simon Robertson, "Preload multiple bin bags in the bin so in case of a split bag, the mess is contained."

    16. It's not bad.

    17. "Windscreen cover for your car in the winter. Costs 10 pounds, saves 30 minutes, better ROI than a shoe." And he's followed up with, "Horn."

    18. CW

No car windscreen takes 30 minutes to clear.

    19. JO

      Yeah.

    20. CW

      It takes-

    21. JO

But it's not 30 minutes of active effort as well. I think it's like-

    22. There's always the, there's always the break glass in case of emergency and having lukewarm water. And I know it might crack your windscreen, but if you've got to get somewhere, you've got to get somewhere, haven't you?

    23. CW

      Fast, yeah.

    24. JO

So, so, so you know I actually saw-

    25. CW

      Assault it.

    26. JO

... people opposite my house, um, fill up a freeze-, like run into the house, fill up a freezer bag with hot water, run out and like use it to-

    27. CW

      Drape it across?

    28. JO

Yeah, so they like draped it-

    29. CW

      Wow.

    30. JO

... and cleared the windscreen, which I thought was very clever, because then it-

Consistency as a meta-hack: fixed sleep/train/eat times + batching tasks (and trampolines)

    1. JO

Johnny. Um, so this is a bit of a theme that I've been trying to do, um, this year. So kind of like my new year thing was to, um, which is influenced from a guy called Sam Ovens, who I know you're a massive fan of Chris.

    2. CW

      Sam Ovens.

    3. JO

Um, but just the idea of... So what I, what, what I've alwa- historically done is, um, with any of my, like, self-improvement or habits or anything like that, and this is the b- I think this is the best way to find life hacks, is I've typically had, like, weekends where I'll wake up late or do things a bit differently, or, like, I'll modify my days a bit. But I've tried as much as possible to wake up at the same time every day. So, like, I'm, like, a minute out since, like, the 5th of January or whatever. Go to bed same time every day, train the same days of the same week at the same time, eat at the same time. So you just create this, like, framework over your day that is the same every time. So you start to feel hungry at the same time. You start to feel tired at the same time. And then my morning routine is exactly the same, and I've got it down to an hour. So, I, I mean, I know you were chatting about this last time, like, if you know... So I know that by 8:00 AM I'm done, go downstairs, coffee, feed Dexter, Becca walks Dexter, go upstairs, cold shower, start work by this time. Everything, everything in your life is so much easier 'cause, like you aren't... What Sam says is like, you're not fighting hormones. Like, you're not fighting, like, randomly feeling hungry at 10:00 AM 'cause you ate then yesterday, not randomly feeling tired at 9:30. But when you've got that running, so, like, part... the, the life hack is one, rather than trying to do what I think most people do is they're like, "Right, now is the time I'm gonna improve myself. I'm gonna pick this really complicated thing and try and stick to it." Pick, like, the most basic bitch version and do it perfectly for, like, 14 days. And then...... try and pick the little optimization points.

    4. CW

      What's an example of that?

    5. JO

So, the guy you interviewed, the Efficiency Is Everything guy, spoke about, like, write out your morning routine, for example, and then look for little ways you can make it better. So rather than, like, "I'm going to wake up and stretch and journal and read and exercise and have a prote-- like, pick, like, three things or one thing that you know you're going to be able to do, and prove it to yourself that for 14 days, I'm never going to miss. Then add one thing in. And when you just, when you have that, you can spot, like, actually, like, "I could add this and that would make that a li- a little bit better or a little bit quicker." Like, "I'll brush my teeth," then ... actually that's another one.

    6. CW

      So-

    7. JO

      Hmm. (laughs)

    8. (laughs) So to, to add to that then, the thing that this guy talked about, and he used the example of w- Henry Ford's, uh, first public speech about his manufacturing process.

    9. Mm-hmm.

    10. CW

That was my example. Oh. Was it not when he gets undressed?

    11. JO

      Yeah, okay.

    12. CW

That's my example. Don't give it to him.

    13. JO

      Oh, God. Okay. (laughs)

    14. CW

      Motherfucker.

    15. JO

Sorry, Chris's example- (laughs) Yeah, you motherfucker.

    16. ... of where he, rather than, um, doing up his shirt from top to bottom and then putting his tie on, it was, put the shirt buttons on from bottom to top, and then his hands were already in the same spot to do the tie.

    17. (laughs)

    18. And although that sounds like a silly thing, when it's, when it's Henry Ford and that's-

    19. Yeah. (laughs)

    20. ... scaled over a manufacturing process for a car, it's like every-

    21. CW

You get the Ford Motor Company.

    22. JO

      Yeah, like-

    23. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    24. ... that's what you get. And, and so the idea of, like, batching your tasks so that you have your toothbrush and floss in the shower. You wake up, you turn the shower on, you go and boil the kettle, you come back, clothes off, in the shower, you wash your ...

    25. It's shampoo, and then you let, and you let the soap-

    26. Shampoo. That's it, so you wash your body from top to bottom-

    27. Mm-hmm.

    28. ... rather than, like, lather up the lower parts of your body and then try and work up, and then you've got-

    29. Mm-hmm.

    30. ... more cleaning to do.

Unlimited Emirates Wi‑Fi workaround + analog timers, washing up fast, Sonicare finale

    1. CW

No. Right, uh, let's do ... I'll do one more and then we'll do a quick fire round. Um. Goodness me. So okay. Right, this one, this one's a real, a real hack. So I flew, uh, Emirates a fair bit this winter and on both the flight to and the flight back from Dubai to Bali, uh, one of my friends was on who's a girl who's one of the f- uh, air hostesses. And she gave me a hack of how to get unlimited free internet on Emirates. Is it to know one of the air hostesses?

    2. JO

      (laughs)

    3. CW

And I'm gonna, I'm gonna give it- (laughs)

    4. JO

And maybe have had sex with them.

    5. CW

(laughs) Definitely hadn't had sex with her. Um, so- At that point.

    6. JO

      (laughs)

    7. CW

      ... when you-

    8. JO

      That day.

    9. CW

(laughs) ... when you go on, when you go on Emirates, it'll come up and it'll say, um, "How do you w-" Like, On Air, it's called Emirates On Air, and, um, you get to choose do you want unlimited instant messaging or 20 megabytes of data. 20 megabytes of data is like a trial thing, and then after that you've got to pay for however much you have after that. Mm. Um, choose the 20 megabytes of data thing so you don't want to be restricted to just the messaging. Mm-hmm. 20 megabytes of data. And once you've used it, go back into your settings, go to the wifi network that you're on, press in On Air, the little I. Then as you see it, there'll be a bunch of things like a renew lease and a DCID and other stuff. Client ID, that's just three numbers. Change those to th- any other three numbers and it'll reset and you can just- Mm. ... use 20 megabytes again and just keep going. (laughs) That is unlimited free internet on ever- every Emirates flight for the rest of time.

    10. JO

      Have we talked about-

    11. CW

      Right now.

    12. JO

... that on, when I had that on Emirates?

    13. CW

      Yes.

    14. JO

      Uh ...

    15. CW

And you went over somewhere that got you data and then you were gonna be charged £700. I think you used-

    16. JO

      £3,700.

    17. CW

(laughs) 3,000. You fell a- didn't you fall asleep?

    18. JO

      I, I fell asleep s-

    19. CW

'Cause I remember you messaged me and you were like- You didn't turn roaming off and wanted to complain at O2?

    20. JO

Yeah, I just didn't ... I, I just didn't put my phone on airplane mode, like went to sleep. 40 minutes into the flight, opened my phone. Text, welcome to On Air Flight 200.

    21. CW

      Ukraine.

    22. JO

Yeah, and it was like, "You are being charged-"

    23. CW

      I, I paid-

    24. JO

      "... £8 a megabyte."

    25. CW

I pay £1,000 quid for a footage of that moment. (laughs)
