Adam Grant’s question: Body dysmorphia in a judged, body-focused sport

    1. AG

How have you handled, like, body dysmorphia in a sport where body image is so salient and so central to what you do?

Why judged sports can intensify body image pressure: Minimal uniforms and constant visibility

    1. MC

I think what makes judge sports worse is that you're wearing almost nothing. [laughs] This does not help. If I could wear a swim- or a sweatsuit and go do my job, I'd be like, "Oh, no one can see my body. Like, it's fine. Like, I'll do 18 flips, like, it doesn't matter." But you're in these small bathing suits literally showing if you're bloated, everyone can see that. If you have cellulite, everyone can see that, and this haunted me for years. My genetics are cellulite everywhere,

From shame to ownership: Reframing “flaws” like cellulite into strength and pride

    1. MC

and like, now I love it. I'm like, "Hell yeah." I jump off cliffs with cellulite. Like, you can't do what I do literally. [laughs] And it took me a while to get there, but back when I thought I was the only one having cellulite and doing this sport, I'm like, "Am I supposed to quit because I have flaws or flaws in what we think are flaws?"
