EVERY SPOKEN WORD

  1. 0:00 – 0:14

    Intro

    1. TF

      [upbeat music]

  2. 0:14 – 6:04

    Tequila disclosures and investment discourse.

    1. TF

Kev Kev, good to see you, man.

    2. KR

      Tim Tim.

    3. TF

      Look at this.

    4. KR

      In the flesh.

    5. TF

      In the flesh, like grownups.

    6. KR

      I know. Cheers.

    7. TF

Sitting at a table in Austin.

    8. KR

      Cheers, man.

    9. TF

      Look at this.

    10. KR

      We're together.

    11. TF

      Yeah.

    12. KR

      Love it. Happy holidays.

    13. TF

Happy holidays. Happy early New Year's, I suppose.

    14. KR

Was I supposed to shoot that?

    15. TF

      No.

    16. KR

Sip it. It's quite good. Th- that's sipping.

    17. TF

      This is sipping.

    18. KR

      Yeah.

    19. TF

Yeah. So this is something that I've had on previous random shows, but I don't think I've talked about it too much.

    20. KR

      Mm.

    21. TF

This is Lalo Tequila, and Lalo Tequila, full disclosure, it's my first and only alcohol-related investment. I was first introduced to this at a fantastic restaurant here in Austin called Suerte. Excellent restaurant, and-

    22. KR

I feel like you've talked about this place before.

    23. TF

      It's great. It's-

    24. KR

Maybe I should go there tonight

    25. TF

      ... an excellent restaurant.

    26. KR

Is it hard to get in or no?

    27. TF

      Not too, not too bad.

    28. KR

      Okay.

    29. TF

And there is typically some walk-in available.

    30. KR

      Okay.

  3. 6:04 – 14:17

    Startup advisor considerations.

    1. TF

I saw a shirt at a climbing gym yesterday which said, "No solutions, only trade-offs," and I was like, "That is actually pretty interesting to sit with." But on the advising front, because that's really what we're talking about, right? Where can people learn more about that? Because I used to point people, and maybe this is still a good reference, it's a little dated, but Venture Hacks used to have a bunch-

    2. KR

      Yeah

    3. TF

... on advisors and super advisors. This is worth unpacking a little bit for folks. So if you look at, for instance, my track record, the vast majority of my lifetime earnings in startups have actually come from advising.

    4. KR

      Mm.

    5. TF

And that's not to say that it's easy. That's not to say that times haven't changed, because certainly times have changed since 2008, 2009, 2010. But if you have a skill, or you have a network, or you have a platform, there are times when it will be appealing for both you and for a startup to have some type of trade for equity.

    6. KR

      Right.

    7. TF

And Sacca used to be fantastic at this before, before he became the Chris Sacca in marquee lights that we know and love today.

    8. KR

      Yeah.

    9. TF

And taught me a lot about this. But you might look for, let's just say, I don't know how the landscape has changed. You could, you could probably speak to this, but say .2 per f- .25%, right? So-

    10. KR

      It's early

    11. TF

... yeah, like a quarter point early.

    12. KR

It means you're seeing the company pretty early.

    13. TF

      Super early.

    14. KR

      Yeah.

    15. TF

And the way that that's de-risked for the company, or one way that that can be deris- de-risked, is that it vests over a course of, say, two years.

    16. KR

      Right.

    17. TF

So on every quarter, a percentage of that basically becomes yours.

    18. KR

      Yeah.

    19. TF

And the company can cancel at any time.

    20. KR

      Yeah.

    21. TF

And that allows them, in a sense, to kinda try before they fully buy.

    22. KR

      Right.

    23. TF

Right? They get to see what-

    24. KR

      Yeah

    25. TF

... results you can deliver. Any other thoughts on folks? Or thoughts on folks? Jesus [laughs] .

    26. KR

No. We're one sip in. So-

    27. TF

Well, I, this is related to, to caffeine, which we're gonna come back to at some point

    28. KR

... so it's important to remember that every company that's out there, private company, when they're forming and putting together their cap table, like their list of investors, employees, all of that, they put together something called an options pool, which is a percentage of the company that is used to incentivize those employees to work there. And so when you join a company, you get X number of options, and you earn them over, say, typically three to four years.

    29. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    30. KR

A part of that, most founders will set aside for advisors. And so these are people that n- are not compensated with money, but rather just stock. And so in my mind, what I always do when I'm f- forming a new company is I say, "Okay, I'm gonna take 1%, and I'm gonna carve that into 10 roles. And then I'm gonna go out there and find the 10 most impactful people that I can possibly find to help me change the outcome of this, this company." And you offer them in a role, and you say, "Hey, no fancy strings attached." So I never say, "To be an advisor, you have to tw- tweet X number of times." Like, screw that. Like, you want it-

  4. 14:17 – 15:53

The hit rate of past New Year’s resolutions.

    1. TF

      January.

    2. KR

      Yeah, January.

    3. TF

Let's talk about January. We're coming up on the new year. How are you thinking about New Year’s resolutions-

    4. KR

      Mm

    5. TF

      ... that type of thing?

    6. KR

Yeah, so we do this every year.

    7. TF

      [laughs] We do.

    8. KR

I don't even wanna go revisit our lists-

    9. TF

      [laughs]

    10. KR

... 'cause I'm sure they're horrible. What do you think your hit rate is on, on your previous lists? You had it written down. Do you have your last list? Can you look at it?

    11. TF

I don't have it in front of me right now. I would say that over the years I've become better. My hit rate is higher.

    12. KR

      50%?

    13. TF

      Yeah, I would say it's 50%.

    14. KR

      That's about me too.

    15. TF

      I'd say it's probably 50%.

    16. KR

      Yeah.

    17. TF

Which, hey, if that were startup investing, man, you'd be-

    18. KR

      Yeah, you-

    19. TF

... best of the best, right?

    20. KR

      Yeah.

    21. TF

[laughs] But you also don't wanna set your resolutions like, "Brush my teeth three times a week." You don't wanna set the bar so low-

    22. KR

      Right

    23. TF

... just for checking the box.

    24. KR

      Right.

    25. TF

Uh, so I would say it's 50%, maybe a bit more than 50%. I think this year they're simple enough that I could actually get to 100%.

    26. KR

Yes. Yes. That, that's exactly what I did. So this year for me, it's about less, but make sure I can try to get to 75 to 100% of them. So-

    27. TF

      All right

    28. KR

... mine are really straightforward. Last year I went one month without drinking.

    29. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    30. KR

This year my therapist has told me, she's awesome, and, and she's like, she's like, "Oh, you made it a month." She's like, "Oh, cool, cool. Like, congrats. Everybody does that."

  5. 15:53 – 18:33

Henry Shukman’s new meditation app: The Way.

    1. KR

that trend. Uh, we can talk about Henry Shukman's new app too, which is gonna be-

    2. TF

      Mm-hmm

    3. KR

... a big part of that. The Zen master that I study under is finally launching a new meditation app coming in January called The Way, and very excited to help him with that app, uh, in terms of, like, on the product side and just usability side. Obviously, he's doing all the content. I'm not involved in it, I'm just an investor in it, but, uh-

    4. TF

      Not involved in the content?

    5. KR

Not involved in content, right. Yeah, I'm not a Zen master. [laughs]

    6. TF

You know, but you know, you've studied very seriously with Henry.

    7. KR

Yeah, for a few years now.

    8. TF

You introduced us. He's been on this podcast-

    9. KR

      Twice now

    10. TF

      ... twice.

    11. KR

      Yeah.

    12. TF

And they're very strong episodes, so I encourage people to check those out. What makes The Way different?

    13. KR

So the, the one thing about, you know, as an investor, uh, uh, so I'm a part-time VC 'cause I have this other, you know, NFT and art thing I'm, that I'm working on as well. As a VC over at True, we are looking for novel ideas, things that haven't been done before, and the meditation app market is just completely saturated.

    14. TF

      Saturated.

    15. KR

Like, there's n- there's... Who would wanna build an app in that space? It's like it's, there's, I mean, Calm's dominating, you know, Headspace dominating. Like, you know, Waking Up, fantastic app for more on the depth side. I would say Sam probably brings together the strongest group of teachers-

    16. TF

      Mm-hmm

    17. KR

... I would say as a portfolio of meditation teachers.

    18. TF

      Like a university of meditation.

    19. KR

      Yeah, exactly.

    20. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    21. KR

So Henry, his, his approach is like, you know, if you go into any of these other meditation apps, it's like a meditation for sleep, a meditation for anxiety, a meditation for this, three-minute meditation, two-minute meditation, 30-second meditation. You know, it's like it's all these different... Henry's like, he's very humble, but he's one of only, I think, three fully accredited Zen masters in his lineage of Zen in the United States, and he is bringing Zen, uh, a flavor of Zen mixed in with some other types of meditation, and his goal is, is simple. There's, it's, it's The Way. It's one path. There's, there's no choose your own adventure.

    22. TF

      It's not the-

    23. KR

      It is like-

    24. TF

      It's, it's not the ways.

    25. KR

Yeah, it's not the ways. Right.

    26. TF

      [laughs]

    27. KR

There's, you can't branch off and do a body scan over here and then come back for a sleep meditation or a sleep story. Like, it's none of that. It is a singular path, and his goal is to lead you to some type of a awakening moment sometime in the future. So it's for those that are like, "Okay, I've tried the other meditation apps. I wanna go deep. I want, I wanna get really serious about this." So I can't tell you when it's gonna launch. They're in beta right now. I can tell you that thewayapp.com is gonna be the place where you can put in your email address, and they'll let you know when. You know what we can do for your show notes? Let's put a beta link-

    28. TF

      Great

    29. KR

... 'cause I think you can have up to 1,000 testers.

    30. TF

      Perfect.

  6. 18:33 – 20:08

An overlooked advantage for the early investor.

    1. TF

      We'll put a beta link.

    2. KR

And, and you put a little bit of cash in too, which is great.

    3. TF

I did, which was gonna be what I was gonna say next, which is this is my first investment in a meditation app, and my first- ... investment in any type of consumer app in a while, in fact, and that's based on my interactions-

    4. KR

      So it's Evernote [laughs]

    5. TF

You know, which wasn't n- I nece- that wasn't a bad thing. That was, that was certainly not, it didn't turn into the 1000x, you know, 10,000x return that I would like, but-

    6. KR

I gotta tell you, they've turned it around.

    7. TF

      Yeah

    8. KR

      It's a good product again.

    9. TF

It is a good product. I still use it, believe it or not, and-

    10. KR

Dude, I don't, this is actually on my, my, my list.

    11. TF

      Okay.

    12. KR

I mean, we'll get into that, but-

    13. TF

      Yeah

    14. KR

... yeah, finish your thought. Sorry.

    15. TF

Well, I was just gonna say that I learned so much about product, I learned so much about startups, I learned so much about scaling, what to do, what not to do, through my experience with that company, where I was an advisor, 'cause I didn't have the capital early on to really build out a large portfolio with cash alone. And I was able to request, this is not a small thing for me, I was able to make requests of product changes-

    16. KR

      [laughs]

    17. TF

      ... directly [laughs]

    18. KR

It's amazing. That lifeline to the CEO.

    19. TF

That lifeline to the CEO and to the product team. For me, selfishly, if I'm using an app every day, that makes a difference to my quality of life. So I, I do not regret it, and part of your calculus, if you're gonna be involved with early stage, has to be, I think, the assumption that the vast majority are not going to return what you hope they're gonna return. That's part-

    20. KR

Nine, nine out of 10 fail

    21. TF

... that's, that's just part of a power law of distribution. Great book, by the way, Power Law.

  7. 20:08 – 23:38

    Saucelessness and second brains.

    1. TF

So, New Year's resolutions, what are your-

    2. KR

      Yeah. So, yeah

    3. TF

... what, what, what, what else do you have and, and do you have a date? I'm just gonna hold your feet to the fire a little bit. For your three months, have you decided on a start date?

    4. KR

Oh, so I've got... I'm gonna invite you to this. My, my birthday's in February.

    5. TF

      Uh-huh.

    6. KR

And you're invited. I, I got really lucky to get to know the artist SOHN, S-O-H-N.

    7. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    8. KR

Do you know SOHN at all?

    9. TF

      I don't.

    10. KR

Have you listened to his stuff? Oh, so good. So SOHN is become a n- a nice friend, and he agreed to come play my birthday party for, like, 30 people.

    11. TF

      Amazing.

    12. KR

And so he's gonna fly out. He's in Spain right now. He's gonna fly out and, and play, and I gotta have a couple drinks there. We're gonna have a little bartender. I gotta-

    13. TF

[laughs] Yeah, that would be a... You'd be failing before you started-

    14. KR

      Right [laughs] . Exactly

    15. TF

... if your, if your first day were the day before your birthday.

    16. KR

Yeah. After my birthday is when I'm gonna kick this off, so that'll be good. But yeah, so really quickly to hit on mine. So no drinks for three months, daily meditation, no brainer. I wanna organize my brain. I wanna, in, in digital form. And so this is what's really interesting. In the last three months, multiple note-taking apps have enabled AI.

    17. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    18. KR

And what they're doing now is they're saying, "Screw knowing where your notes are. Ask questions of your corpus of data."

    19. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    20. KR

So it's changing into a world where you can just enter all the data, enter all of Tim's brain into some place, and say, "Hey, what was that one note I had that one time when I was at that Mexican restaurant? And I think it was about cat beds." Like-

    21. TF

      [laughs]

    22. KR

... and, and, and it will literally serve you up that note based on-

    23. TF

      Mm-hmm

    24. KR

... the AI and, and its crawling abilities.

    25. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    26. KR

And I think that's just fascinating. So Notion has added that. There are three, you know, they call them second brain note-taking apps that, that, or really four that I'm considering. I'm still working through all of them to see which one I like the best. My candidates are Notion. Craft is amazing.

    27. TF

      Hmm.

    28. KR

      Craft's a really beautiful note-taking app.

    29. TF

      Don't know Craft.

    30. KR

It's a little bit more about here's t- the current day, start taking notes, and then you can interconnect the notes and do all kinds of, of fun things there.

  8. 23:38 – 30:37

Protecting your phone’s collage of schwanzes.

    1. KR

      yours?

    2. TF

Mine are, and then I'm gonna come back. Don't worry, folks, it's not gonna consume the whole show, but I wanna ask you a question about AI. So I'll, I'll preload that in your head-

    3. KR

      Okay

    4. TF

... which is, where do you think people will make, will compromise their privacy-

    5. KR

      Mm-hmm

    6. TF

... because of really compelling convenience-

    7. KR

      Mm-hmm

    8. TF

... where they might regret it?

    9. KR

      Hmm.

    10. TF

I'm just, like, where they might click yes in providing access where later they'll be like-

    11. KR

      Hmm

    12. TF

... "Oh, I really shouldn't have done that." So that's-

    13. KR

I, I have two, two quick answers for that.

    14. TF

      Go for it.

    15. KR

One, I think is gonna be photos. People believe that don't ever click yes to all photo access, especially if you've got dick pics [laughs]

    16. TF

      [laughs] Oh, wow.

    17. KR

No, listen, I, I went there because a buddy of mine just got compromised last week.

    18. TF

      [laughs]

    19. KR

Look, I, I, I kid you not. I kid you not. So this is a true story. I'm not gonna say who. This is, I swear to you, Tim, this is a true story.

    20. TF

      [laughs]

    21. KR

      My buddy got SIM-swapped.

    22. TF

      Okay.

    23. KR

Somebody took over his iCloud account.

    24. TF

      Uh-huh.

    25. KR

And he's got a very, and my wife knows this, so I can say this freely. He's got, he's got a very beautiful wife.

    26. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    27. KR

And, and, you know, he's a good-looking dude.

    28. TF

      Yeah.

    29. KR

He's, he's good. Like, yeah, solid B, you know?

    30. TF

      [laughs]

  9. 30:37 – 35:56

Privacy and liability concerns in an AI-guided world.

    1. KR

this is, this is actually really good tequila.

    2. TF

It's really smooth. So on the AI front, real brief, and then-

    3. KR

Oh, we said photos was the one, one part. You asked what were the two places where, or what were the places where AI might compromise your data.

    4. TF

Yes, so that's the first one.

    5. KR

Yeah, so I think photos would be the main thing, and then the second one would be just this idea of- These note-taking apps. Because if you're journaling, like for me, I, I have, you know, a fantastic therapist and I journal all of that, right? And so things like Obsidian, the reason I'm drawn to one, that one in particular is it's local only-

    6. TF

      Mm-hmm

    7. KR

... so it only, it doesn't sync to the cloud, and when it does, it uses a local encrypted key so they, not even they can read your data.

    8. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    9. KR

I trust Notion, I trust ... But they, if, you know, someone were to compromise their key on their end, in theory, even though the data is encrypted at rest, meaning like when it's not being used, it's encrypted on their hard drives, is still a potential vulnerability there. So that, that does ... But at the end of the day, if someone really wants to read my therapy notes, like whatever, you know?

    10. TF

      Yeah.

    11. KR

We live in a world where you can just be like, "Ah, someone made that up." [laughs]

    12. TF

[laughs] Yeah, there's a lot of, there's, there's a whole new world of plausible deniability-

    13. KR

      Yeah

    14. TF

... with AI, and there's a whole new world of exploits too.

    15. KR

      Yeah.

    16. TF

Wild. On the AI side, for people who might be curious, I've actually, not on my personal notes, but we have trained, or I should say rather Automattic, which runs WordPress.com, and I rely on their enterprise side of things for all of my websites, they have an AI feature and they've trained this AI on all of my transcripts.

    17. KR

      Hmm.

    18. TF

So if you want to ask questions of 700 or so transcripts of the Tim Ferriss Show, you can do that.

    19. KR

      Yep.

    20. TF

The results in a lot of cases are surprisingly good.

    21. KR

There, there's several startups working on this.

    22. TF

      Yeah.

    23. KR

I, I saw one that actually indexed your show, and if you ask a question of it, will return the clip in which you said-

    24. TF

      Mm-hmm

    25. KR

... the, the answer to it, which is amazing.

    26. TF

      I've seen this.

    27. KR

Y- I was thinking the other day about, you know, a, a great startup that I don't have the time to build would be a podcast app that, imagine this world and tell me if this is interesting to you. So it trains on all of your data.

    28. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    29. KR

I'm listening to Tim Ferriss Show. I'm halfway through an episode.

    30. TF

      Mm-hmm.

  10. 35:56 – 41:46

Minimalist delegation, foot faults, and surrender.

    1. TF

Coming back to New Year's resolutions.

    2. KR

      Yeah.

    3. TF

We had a nice big boomerang on that. Mine are, I would say simple, not necessarily easy, as is true with a lot of things. The first is minimalist delegation, and what that means to me is delegating the why and the who, but not necessarily the, the how. So I think my predisposition is to be very detailed when I delegate various types-

    4. KR

      Hmm

    5. TF

      ... of tasks or projects.

    6. KR

      Mm-hmm.

    7. TF

In other words, what I would like to do more of is here is v- at the simplest level, five words of what I wanna do.

    8. KR

      Mm-hmm.

    9. TF

      Figure it out.

    10. KR

      Right.

    11. TF

And you can handle all the specifics. You should know that we should have at least three bids if we're putting something out-

    12. KR

      Right

    13. TF

... that's expensive, dot, dot, dot, dot, dot. But to really take my hands off the wheel in terms of over-prescribing the details-

    14. KR

      Yeah

    15. TF

... which I, which I have a tendency to do because-

    16. KR

      Right

    17. TF

... my, my mind is very detail focused. I'm very meticulous. But I've found that more often than not- I can point to examples of where I'm providing too much-

    18. KR

      Yes

    19. TF

... step-by-step detail, and also people who receive that in some cases feel like they're being micromanaged.

    20. KR

Not only that, they're not building the muscle.

    21. TF

      Exactly.

    22. KR

      Because they, they-

    23. TF

      The confidence

    24. KR

... they need to understand where, th- and the only way they can kind of build that muscle around who you are and what you want is by making mistakes-

    25. TF

      Mm-hmm

    26. KR

... and you saying, "Hey, I would've done it this way a little bit differently because of X, Y, and Z," and then they learn from that mistake versus you just prescribing. And it saves you a shit ton of time.

    27. TF

It saves a ton of time. So what I'm, what I'm experimenting with, and I've already started doing this, and I think I've made a lot of progress, is say less. [laughs] Say less and be available for questions, but otherwise make it clear that there's a certain degree of wiggle room-

    28. KR

      Yeah

    29. TF

... and space for errors that is okay. A-

    30. KR

So when your admin walks in, you say, "Sandwich."

  11. 41:46 – 46:55

    Quick, creative collaborations.

    1. TF

we're gonna talk about it. So quick creative collaborations. This is an area where you have seen me actually kick the tires quite a bit in the last year with Cockpunch. [laughs] Which by the way, there's a ton coming with that, uh, which is gonna be a big surprise to a lot of people, but I have done a num-

    2. KR

      Buy Cockpunch.

    3. TF

      [laughs]

    4. KR

I'm taking notes real quick here. Buy NFTs, Tim Ferriss Cockpunch.

    5. TF

      That's right.

    6. KR

      [laughs]

    7. TF

      Hashtag, hashtag-

    8. KR

      Financial advice

    9. TF

... to, to the moon. No, not financial advice. Jesus. Oh, that was AI talking. I didn't say that.

    10. KR

      [laughs]

    11. TF

In the process, I mean, using this NFT project way back in the day, which is when it launched in December of 2022, I guess, as a vehicle through which to do creative experiments, right?

    12. KR

      Mm-hmm.

    13. TF

An emergent long fiction, that was kinda the whole point. I've walked the, walked the talk in the sense that since then, and a lot of this has been invisible, but it, it will soon be visible. I've done creative sprints in, say, upstate New York with some of the top D&D and Magic: The Gathering artists. Or I should say people who have done amazing, iconic work for those brands-

    14. KR

      Yeah

    15. TF

... doing character design and concept art.

    16. KR

      How's it felt to you?

    17. TF

It was so much fun. It was so much fun, and I have had this narrative that I'm a better I see, right? In- individual contributor. I'm better as-

    18. KR

      Mm

    19. TF

      ... a solo operator.

    20. KR

      Mm.

    21. TF

And that in, in some sense, I think because I've heard from some publishers and so on that I'm a bit of a problem author because I'm very, very, very unwilling to compromise quality. Like, I'm just, I am unwilling to compromise quality, and I'm very meticulous. And so if somebody's not on that same page, I'm a problem.

    22. KR

      Mm-hmm.

    23. TF

And so I developed this narrative that I was just prickly and difficult and didn't play well with others.

    24. KR

How much of that do you think is true? Have you d- ever done a 360 review?

    25. TF

I have done a 360 review. The feedback doesn't usually... I wouldn't say it supports that narrative.

    26. KR

      Mm.

    27. TF

And in this particular case, gathered all these folks, had some writers as well, which I thought was gonna be harder than the art side, because I can, I can step back and say, "You are all much better at art than I am," but I have an identity as a writer. And it was great. I had two writers, three artists, and had an absolute blast. The output was spectacular, which I haven't made public yet. And that emboldened me to do more and more experiments.

    28. KR

      Mm.

    29. TF

And so I can't talk too much about it right now, but I am actually working on my first book project in seven years, eight years, and I'm doing it with a collaborator, which I thought I would never do in a million years.

    30. KR

Okay. Wait, you gotta give us a little more. Fiction, nonfiction, fantasy?

  12. 46:55 – 54:34

    My post-holiday physical reboot.

    1. TF

be doing more of. And then last on the physical reboot, it's, I have been such a piglet in the last month, and-

    2. KR

      You're looking thick.

    3. TF

[laughs] That's T-H-I-C-C, folks, looking thick. And [laughs] I am... I'm not in terrible shape.

    4. KR

      No.

    5. TF

But I am planning on continuing to be a little piggy for Christmas and the holidays, 'cause I'm gonna be home with family, and, like, I lo- look, I love butter cookies. I love gingerbread cookies. I'm not... This is kinda like you not committing to your three months before your birthday. That would be stupid.

    6. KR

      Yeah.

    7. TF

So I'm gonna be spending January, February in really intense outdoor training and skiing and ski touring and so on, so I'm not worried about burning off what I'm accumulating-

    8. KR

      Yeah

    9. TF

... 'cause that's gonna happen, especially at high altitude.

    10. KR

I'm gonna try and visit you, by the way.

    11. TF

      Awesome.

    12. KR

      January.

    13. TF

      That'll be-

    14. KR

      Yeah

    15. TF

... fantastic. So the physical reboot is, is up there, and I'm optimistic about that because on the internal level, meaning biomarkers and so on, almost every biomarker is the best that it's been in, like, a decade-

    16. KR

      Wow

    17. TF

      ... after the last year.

    18. KR

That is not me. That sounds amazing. [laughs]

    19. TF

[laughs] Yeah, and some of that has been, uh, certainly physical practice, exercise. A lot of that has been dietary since I'm-

    20. KR

      How's your, uh, ApoB?

    21. TF

      The best it's ever been.

    22. KR

      How low?

    23. TF

      I can't recall offhand.

    24. KR

      Okay.

    25. TF

      It's with, with, with-

    26. KR

      20s or 30s?

    27. TF

I mean, it's within the aggressive Attia-

    28. KR

      Yeah

    29. TF

      ... target range.

    30. KR

      AST, ALT fine?

  13. 54:34 – 59:06

    Kevin’s physical reboot.

    1. KR

So I wanted to talk to you real quick about, you know, you s- you mentioned the physical body reboot. One of the things that all of my physicians, bougie to say all my physicians-

    2. TF

      [laughs]

    3. KR

      My primary care physician-

    4. TF

      Te- tell us, President Obama

    5. KR

... [laughs] has been, has been concerned about is I have slightly elevated blood pressure.

    6. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    7. KR

And it's not to the point where it's, uh, we, I should have it treated with m- medicine-

    8. TF

      Yeah

    9. KR

... but, you know, there's breathing exercises you can do. There's a, a device called Resp Rate, which, uh, Peter Attia recommends.

    10. TF

      Hmm. I don't know it.

    11. KR

Yeah, it's fantastic. It hooks around, um, your chest. It's like a strap.

    12. TF

      Okay.

    13. KR

And then you put in some- ... ear pods that are connected to this device, and it walks you through a series of breathing exercises, and it's clinically proven to lower your blood pressure.

    14. TF

      Hmm.

    15. KR

So Attia recommends that as kind of first-line defense for-

    16. TF

      Nice

    17. KR

      ... slightly elevated blood pressure.

    18. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    19. KR

There is a device that is approved in the UK and the EU, and it's called Aktiia, and it's a horrible name.

    20. TF

      What? [laughs]

    21. KR

      It is Ak- Aktiia.

    22. TF

      [laughs]

    23. KR

      Not Attia.

    24. TF

They're gonna get a cease and desist-

    25. KR

Yeah, a cease and desist from Attia

    26. TF

      ... from Attia. [laughs]

    27. KR

      Yeah, so it's A k- A-K-T-I-I-A.

    28. TF

      Oh, okay.

    29. KR

I'm wearing it on my wrist right now.

    30. TF

      Okay.

  14. 59:06 – 1:12:34

Taking a break from caffeine, alcohol, sex, and sweetness.

    1. KR

      Sorry, I was enjoying that

    2. TF

... taking breaks from stuff, because I have kind of a wild story, which I don't think we've talked about at all. I have a number of wild stories.

    3. KR

Oh, yeah. I got one big one for today, but you got-

    4. TF

      You have a big-

    5. KR

      Yeah

    6. TF

... you have a big one, too, and I think these are gonna be interrelated-

    7. KR

      All right

    8. TF

... in a sense. I'll piggyback half of it after what I believe you're gonna share. But I took a month off of caffeine, anything caffeinated, which was the first-

    9. KR

      Cold turkey?

    10. TF

      Cold turkey, which was the-

    11. KR

      Oof

    12. TF

... first time I've done that s- probably I would have to imagine since I was, what, 16?

    13. KR

      Whoa.

    14. TF

      I mean, it's been forever.

    15. KR

Let me ask you a question here.

    16. TF

      Yeah.

    17. KR

Why, why would you do that cold turkey? Why not just do like, oh, a half a cup of coffee today, and then maybe a quarter cup a few days later? Like, why go... This is, like, the extreme Tim [laughs] where you're just-

    18. TF

      Well, it's-

    19. KR

      Did you get headaches?

    20. TF

      It's extreme-

    21. KR

      You must have gotten something.

    22. TF

      Yeah, I got headaches.

    23. KR

      [laughs]

    24. TF

But, but it was during a period where I could accept-

    25. KR

But you had Vicodins, so you were fine. [laughs]

    26. TF

      No, I didn't use Vicodin.

    27. KR

      [laughs]

    28. TF

I, I knew that I could accept the headaches, and I had a period of time where there really was a low cost, where, like, professionally I was taking three to four weeks off the grid, and I knew that I had a grace period-

    29. KR

      Hmm

    30. TF

... where I could sustain it. So I did effectively no caffeine, no alcohol, and I suppose the most important other item-

  15. 1:12:34 – 1:18:46

Cacao ceremonies and perilous tobacco cocktails.

    1. TF

      that's my vote at least.

    2. KR

One question for you. One of the things that I have yet to try that I've been really curious about is I know that there are cultures, I can't remember, I'm gonna screw it up. Uh, I don't know if it's like an Inca or... I can't remember exactly which culture it is from Mexico-

    3. TF

      Mm-hmm

    4. KR

... that did high dose chocolate, almost like a-

    5. TF

      Oh, cacao

    6. KR

      ... uh, c- like a cacao ceremony.

    7. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    8. KR

Where they drink like this like super purified cacao.

    9. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    10. KR

      Like insane amounts of caffeine.

    11. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    12. KR

And they like reach these kind of spiritual states.

    13. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    14. KR

Have you ever heard anything about that?

    15. TF

I haven't read reports, but I know that, for instance, I wanna say in some places in Mexico, certainly in Guatemala, you have cacao ceremonies. I don't know-

    16. KR

      Yeah

    17. TF

      ... how, I don't know-

    18. KR

I was invited to one one time-

    19. TF

      Yeah

    20. KR

      ... a cacao ceremony.

    21. TF

So I don't know how much- I don't know the historical record, right? I, I don't know how much of these things were used 100 years ago, 1,000 years ago. There are, there are many new practices that have created the narrative of age-old use-

    22. KR

      Right

    23. TF

... for a veneer of credibility when in fact things were very different 1,000 years ago.

    24. KR

You have to imagine cacao was a staple.

    25. TF

Cacao's been around for a while.

    26. KR

      Yeah.

    27. TF

So i- in the case of cacao, my understanding is it contains theobromine, which in and of itself is a fascinating word.

    28. KR

      Mm-hmm.

    29. TF

So theobroma, theo like theology, broma food, food of the gods. Theobromine, which is, it pharmacokinetically i- is very meaning, just if you were look at the graph of peak and half-life and so on, it's quite different from caffeine-

    30. KR

      Mm-hmm

  16. 1:18:46 – 1:21:07

Radical Acceptance and the origin of TimTim.

    1. TF

      Yeah, late night pizza.

    2. KR

      [laughs]

    3. TF

I mean, like if, if you're a road warrior and you just travel all the time because you say yes to everything, like, okay, what does it feel like to sit at home-

    4. KR

      Yeah

    5. TF

... if such a thing exists for you, for one month? What does that feel like?

    6. KR

      Yeah.

    7. TF

And if a bunch of weird stuff comes up, like maybe as Tara Brach would say, like the, you know, to the-

    8. KR

      Ah

    9. TF

... to, to one sage, only one question matters, what are you unwilling to feel?

    10. KR

Oh, my God, I have to have her on the c- the podcast. That is one of my-

    11. TF

      She's great

    12. KR

... top guests I could get.

    13. TF

      Yeah, so-

    14. KR

      Yeah

    15. TF

... if you haven't read it, folks, Radical Acceptance, which-

    16. KR

      Oh, my God

    17. TF

... I owe Dar Dar thanks for. [laughs] So if you don't get the reference-

    18. KR

Dar Dar is my wife, Daria.

    19. TF

      [laughs]

    20. KR

Uh, w- we call him TimTim, so th- th- and-

    21. TF

      Which came about-

    22. KR

      ... the family-

    23. TF

... actually, let's give people like a real look into the archives. So TimTim came about because we were on a trip to China-

    24. KR

      Mm

    25. TF

... to drink pu-erh tea all over the place-

    26. KR

      That's right

    27. TF

... which was one of the weirder trips I've ever been on for a lot of reasons. [laughs]

    28. KR

We were in the Yunnan province together in the middle of nowhere.

    29. TF

We had, we had some very strange experiences on that trip. Drank a lot of tea. Had a motley crew of people with us along for that ride, and there was another Tim on the trip.

    30. KR

      Yeah.

  17. 1:21:07 – 1:54:43

How NFTs drove Kevin to ketamine.

    1. TF

      No caf.

    2. KR

All right. Let's talk about my experiment, shall we?

    3. TF

      Yeah, let's do it.

    4. KR

      All right.

    5. TF

I'm excited. I'm excited about this 'cause I also don't know the details. I know that-

    6. KR

      You saw the text messages.

    7. TF

I saw some of the text messages-

    8. KR

      Yeah

    9. TF

... and I was very curious.

    10. KR

Okay, so this is a big one. Um, I-

    11. TF

      You're pregnant.

    12. KR

      I'm pregnant. [laughs]

    13. TF

      [laughs]

    14. KR

What was the one where Arnold Schwarzenegger got pregnant? What was that?

    15. TF

      [laughs]

    16. KR

[laughs] I can't remember the name of that movie.

    17. TF

      I can't remember the name.

    18. KR

      Yeah.

    19. TF

But yes, I know the movie. [laughs]

    20. KR

But basically that's... I have the same physique, too. Um, so basically, you know, for, for people that, that, that know me or, or don't quite know me, like, you know, I've, I've, I've done a bunch of stuff i- in terms of being, like, an entrepreneur and an investor and these different things. And one of the, the hats that I put on, you know, a couple years ago was dabbling in the world of Web3. And Web3, for those untrained, i- i, you know, it's cryptocurrency. It's, it is decentralized internet. It is NFTs. It's art on the blockchain.

    21. TF

      It's, it's ownership, right?

    22. KR

      It's-

    23. TF

If, if 1.0 is read-only internet-

    24. KR

      Yeah

    25. TF

      ... 2.0 is read/write, 3 is actually owning a piece of-

    26. KR

      Right

    27. TF

... what's on the playing field.

    28. KR

So it's a very exciting frontier, and it, and it's filled with a bunch of explorers that I would say are s- It's a small number of people. In terms of people that are excited about digital art, call it, you know, 250,000 people or less.

    29. TF

      Mm.

    30. KR

But it is, you know, a serious group of people that are enabling a new canvas to take form in front of us. And I believe in my heart of hearts that for all the bad press that we see about NFTs and all the scams, and don't get me wrong, there's tons of that shit-

  18. 1:54:43 – 2:00:21

    Kevin’s robot-enhanced Tyler Hobbs tattoo.

    1. KR

      of it.

    2. TF

Yeah, a good portion. All right, so let's, let's-

    3. KR

Well, I gotta talk to you about my tattoo at some point.

    4. TF

[laughs] Okay, should we... All right, look, I'll, well, you know what? I'm gonna leave that as a cliffhanger. We're gonna come back to-

    5. KR

Yeah, we gotta come back to that

    6. TF

      ... wild drug story. Tattoo.

    7. KR

'Cause, 'cause, 'cause that's why I'm here in town.

    8. TF

      Oh, I didn't know that.

    9. KR

      Oh, yeah.

    10. TF

      All right.

    11. KR

You're gonna hear about the, the crazy machine.

    12. TF

What? Okay, let's... Tattoo and crazy machine, what's going on?

    13. KR

One of the, the, the premier generative artists w- and by way, when I say generative, what I mean by that, for those that don't know, is, like, there's a whole genre of, uh, art that is code-based. Uh, the-

    14. TF

      Mm-hmm

    15. KR

... you know, you write actually computer science code, like, and, and you create art, and one of the, the, the premier artists in the space that's been sold at Christie's and Sotheby's and all over the place is Tyler Hobbs. He's based here in Austin.

    16. TF

Such an awesome guy, too. Another sweetheart of a guy.

    17. KR

By the way, he told me, uh, he's always enjoyed hanging out with you.

    18. TF

      Oh. [laughs]

    19. KR

So he's, he's, he's hung out with you a couple times, and-

    20. TF

      What a nice guy. He's-

    21. KR

      Yeah

    22. TF

... he, he, he and his wife are just lovely beyond words.

    23. KR

Such great people, yeah. And so Tyler lives here in Austin, and, you know, his NFTs, you can say we do want NFTs, but his NFTs are just absolutely gorgeous pieces of artwork and, and it can sell for, at times, millions of dollars. Like, they're-

    24. TF

      Yeah

    25. KR

      ... they're really sought after.

    26. TF

Also a legit visual artist outside of code.

    27. KR

Oh my God, like I went-

    28. TF

      Yeah

    29. KR

... to his studio today and he pulled open binders that he's been doing-

    30. TF

      Oh, so fun

  19. 2:00:21 – 2:07:07

What kind of tattoo might I get, and why?

    1. TF

      Yeah, that's, that's pretty wild.

    2. KR

So you've been thinking about getting one?

    3. TF

I've been thinking about getting one for years, which would be-

    4. KR

      What would you do? Molly

    5. TF

... Molly's paw prints on my forearm.

    6. KR

      [laughs] You would not.

    7. TF

      But... What was that?

    8. KR

You would not. Are you serious?

    9. TF

      Yeah, totally.

    10. KR

      That'd be kinda awesome.

    11. TF

      Yeah. Um-

    12. KR

      How old is Molly now?

    13. TF

      Molly's eight.

    14. KR

      Is-

    15. TF

      Between eight and nine.

    16. KR

Dude, Toaster is slowing down, man.

    17. TF

      Yeah. It's-

    18. KR

      It's tough

    19. TF

      ... it's so sad.

    20. KR

There is nothing more heartbreaking than starting to see your dog start to go.

    21. TF

      On the decline.

    22. KR

      Yeah.

    23. TF

      Yeah.

    24. KR

Like, he's fall- he's falling now. Like, his legs-

    25. TF

      Oh, no

    26. KR

... are falling out from underneath him. I know. It's sad.

    27. TF

      Oh, God.

    28. KR

We don't, we don't have to take the podcast there, but yeah, it's pretty-

    29. TF

No, but it's, hey, Toaster's been with the podcast since-

    30. KR

      Yeah. [laughs]

  20. 2:07:07 – 2:19:39

Advice for our former (and current) versions.

    1. KR

You would, you would love her. Can I ask you a question?

    2. TF

      Yeah.

    3. KR

I wanna ask you a question that is a little bit more intimate just because we've had some tequila and, um-

    4. TF

      [laughs]

    5. KR

... uh, we're talking about dogs and, and-

    6. TF

      Mm-hmm

    7. KR

... just kind of the companionship and, and whatnot.

    8. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    9. KR

Speaking of kind of, like, New Year's resolutions and looking back on life, in the last 10 years when it comes to both personal, intimate, like, relationships or private, what would you, if there's any one thing, what would you change about your interactions with either someone that you've been with on a intimate level-

    10. TF

      Mm-hmm

    11. KR

... or someone that, like, maybe it's, like, on a more kind of like, you know, friendship level?

    12. TF

      Mm.

    13. KR

Is there anything that you can look back on and say, "I would have done more of this"?

    14. TF

Mm. That is an exceptional question. And you know, when I was driving over here, I was thinking about another question. We have the ultimate cliffhanger in the crazy drug story, so maybe we'll get to that. Maybe we won't. Maybe we'll do that next episode. But I was thinking also, I was like, "What would Kevin tell his..." I'm gonna answer your question. But I was thinking, what would Kevin tell his 30-year-old self?

    15. KR

      Mm.

    16. TF

      Like, current Kevin.

    17. KR

      Mm.

    18. TF

Like, do this, maybe not do so much of that-

    19. KR

      Mm-hmm

    20. TF

... blah, blah, blah. Thought that could be a fun exploration. With the interpersonal stuff, I think that I would say just because someone needs other things, things that are different from your needs, does not make them high-maintenance.

    21. KR

      [laughs]

    22. TF

      And by the way-

    23. KR

      Mm

    24. TF

... Tim, [laughs] if they looked at you through the same lens you were looking at- them through, they would decide that you are high maintenance.

    25. KR

      Mm.

    26. TF

So gather some tools, right? I would say read The Five Love Languages. As cheesy and schlocky as it might seem, that shit is so helpful as a framework for discussion-

    27. KR

      Mm-hmm

    28. TF

... for identifying and easily labeling the different categories of needs that people might have-

    29. KR

      Mm-hmm

    30. TF

... and putting them in some type of order. "Oh, interesting. You're a quality time person. Good to know. Number two would be this."

  21. 2:19:39 – 2:32:49

    Ayahuasca agony alleviation and alternatives.

    1. TF

      Yeah.

    2. KR

What was the, um, before we wrap things up, because I know we're coming to the end and you still have some tequila to finish.

    3. TF

      [laughs]

    4. KR

What was the cliffhanger you said you wanted to, you wanted to tell us?

    5. TF

Yeah, so I'll, I'll try to keep it short. I mean, I'll let you, I'll tell you what, I'll keep it short and then you can excavate-

    6. KR

      Okay

    7. TF

      ... as you like.

    8. KR

      I love to excavate.

    9. TF

[laughs] All right. So as you know, for the last year I've basically been crippled by lower back issues.

    10. KR

      Yeah.

    11. TF

I mean, I've, I've had trouble, there are days when I've had trouble getting up and walking. I mean, it's been that bad.

    12. KR

      Yeah.

    13. TF

      And-

    14. KR

I mean, to be honest, Tim, you first told me about this like eight years ago or something.

    15. TF

      Yeah.

    16. KR

Remember when you got those injections or something?

    17. TF

      Sure.

    18. KR

You were like, you were like, "I think I have degenerative-"

    19. TF

      Disc disease.

    20. KR

      Yeah.

    21. TF

Yeah. So I've had lower back issues for a long time. This is also a congenital issue, so I have what's called a, uh, transitional segment. In other words, the, the- there's a segment in my lumbar, there are vertebrae in my lumbar area that really mimic a sacral vertebral, uh, segment. And that's problematic for a host of reasons. Creates an abnormal angle, and, uh, if you can imagine just bending the paperclip over and over again in ways that it shouldn't be bent, that's sort of the feeling in the low back. And my brother has this. There are other people in my family who have this issue. So standing extended, slow walking, like a museum walk, cocktail party type of experience can be very painful.

    22. KR

      Hmm.

    23. TF

Like, the low back locks up. But in the last year specifically, had all sorts of issues, and all sorts of MRIs, and specialists, and PT, and adjustments, and traction, and this, that, and the other thing. And it was a disaster, and it caused a... Well, let me give myself a little more agency. I created a lot of anxiety around this, 'cause I was like, "Fuck, is this the new normal?"

    24. KR

      Right.

    25. TF

"Is, is this really the new normal where-"

    26. KR

Well, 'cause you, you project forward. Like, what, what does five years from now look like?

    27. TF

Yeah. I'm like, "I'm not that old." [laughs]

    28. KR

      Right.

    29. TF

You know? And I'm pretty active.

    30. KR

Your, and your skincare is amazing.
