    Intro

    1. KR

[upbeat music] Hello, everyone. Welcome to the number one rated video podcast, The Random Show. And when I mean number one, I mean rated by the people in this room, which is, uh, the three of us.

    2. TF

      Unanimously. Unani-

    3. KR

We- we can say number one

    4. TF

... well, Graham took some convincing.

    5. KR

      Yeah. [laughs]

    6. TF

      But, uh-

    7. KR

      I'm entirely convinced

    8. TF

      ... episode number 396.

    9. KR

      That's right.

    10. TF

      You are?

    11. KR

      Kevin Rose.

    12. TF

      I am Tim Ferriss.

    13. KR

[laughs] Why am I your talk guy?

    14. TF

      [laughs]

  2. 0:33 – 1:05

    What is The Random Show?

    1. TF

So if you haven't seen the show before, uh, we are a couple fools. We talk about random stuff that we run into throughout our lives, uh, during the week or sometimes weeks between these episodes.

    2. KR

      Mm-hmm.

    3. TF

      Sometimes months between these episodes.

    4. KR

      Yeah.

    5. TF

Uh, so it's all over the place. We hope you enjoy that. I'm acting like we're just starting the show for the first time. [laughs]

    6. KR

I know. This is a very, this is a very herky-jerky... I feel like we need-

    7. TF

That's what you get for not drinking.

    8. KR

      I know. I'm just like-

    9. TF

We have, we'll come back to that

    10. KR

      ... too sober.

    11. TF

Kevin's too sober to be relaxed for our

  3. 1:05 – 3:16

    What tea we're drinking

    1. TF

      outing.

    2. KR

      Thank you for the tea.

    3. TF

      Yeah, absolutely.

    4. KR

      What are we having?

    5. TF

Uh, well, this, this that we have here is a ginger and turmeric tea, and it is from a company called Reishi, I think, on my-

    6. KR

      Oh, Reishi. They're in Oakland.

    7. TF

      Is, are they really?

    8. KR

      Yeah.

    9. TF

      Oh.

    10. KR

I went over to their, uh, headquarters actually.

    11. TF

      Oh, cool. Yeah.

    12. KR

      Yeah.

    13. TF

Because the other one is actually also from Oakland. Who knew Oakland was such a, such a hotbed? This stuff right here is a, uh, Stress Less tea. So we have the, the ginger and turmeric, and then this is rose petals, lemon balm, skullcap, and peppermint. Um, I think we've, I think we've synchronized our cycles.

    14. KR

      Yeah, kinda.

    15. TF

Coming back on cramps. This is good stuff.

    16. KR

I do like the, uh, I do like the Reishi tea as far as, like, if you're looking for just a, you know, I don't know, $6 tea, and it's good quality. Like, the founder, I met him.

    17. TF

      Yeah.

    18. KR

He actually really cares about his product. He goes and sources the tea. Um, it's not gonna be like the artisanal, like handpicked, like-

    19. TF

      Artist anal. [laughs]

    20. KR

You know what I'm talking about. Artisanal, like handpicked, like high-end teas that you get at some places. But, uh, it's, it's really good. And you can get it at-

    21. TF

      I love-

    22. KR

... Whole Foods. You can get it-

    23. TF

I buy the, the ginger and turmeric by the box. I love it.

    24. KR

      Yeah.

    25. TF

And it's, it's, it's a really good, uh, touch to add to almost any other type of tea. So I'll combine it oftentimes in the morning with pu-erh tea, and, uh, it overcomes a little of that sort of wet horse ass barnyard smell of the pu-erh.

    26. KR

Yeah. Pu-erh can be a little-

    27. TF

      A little tangy.

    28. KR

      Yeah.

    29. TF

Uh, so I wanna thank, uh, Em and Rob. Em and Rob gave this to me as a gift. Em and Rob of Forage, that is their company. This is a Heath Ceramics mug, and it has a very unusual construction to it. I think this was the first mug they became well known for, and it's because the owner wanted to be able to smoke and drink coffee at the same time.

    30. KR

      Pretty badass.

  4. 3:16 – 7:39

    Kevin's startup

    1. TF

      what's happening, Kevin?

    2. KR

Uh, lots, lots, actually, since the last time we did one of these shows. Obviously, it's been, uh... We haven't done one since New Year's, have we?

    3. KR

I think the last one was in November.

    4. KR

      Yeah.

    5. KR

      Yeah.

    6. KR

      It's been a while.

    7. TF

      In November?

    8. KR

      Yeah.

    9. KR

Gosh, it's been a long time.

    10. TF

      Months and months.

    11. KR

      So I left Google Ventures.

    12. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    13. KR

I was there... You know about this. I told you.

    14. TF

      I do.

    15. KR

Uh, I was there for almost three years actually, which is kinda crazy, um, and started a new company. Well, I, I started a new company. I was still at Google Ventures. And basically, the thing that I have a hard time with, and, and you know how this is-

    16. TF

      Mm-hmm

    17. KR

... being like a multitasker that you are. Uh, y- as, as an entrepreneur and, and also an investor, and sometimes an ent- entrepreneur on multiple projects at the same time, it's like all of a sudden, you know, you wake up in the morning, you go have a coffee or two or three with founders trying to vet deals for Google Ventures. You go off and you work on your startup in the afternoon, and then, like, there's no time for anything else.

    18. TF

      Yeah.

    19. KR

I mean, you, you go home, you have dinner, then you get back on your computer, and it's just like I'm, the, I was just dying. It was, like, way too much stress. And honestly, I need the focus. I'm a little ADD.

    20. TF

      Yeah.

    21. KR

So, like, for me, focus is, is really key. And, uh, I just felt that at Google Ventures, I love the team over there. They're, they're great folks. Graham still works there. Um, they're, they're awesome, but, uh, for me, I, I just, like, if I'm gonna do something, I have to be all in. I feel really bad when I'm sitting there and I have to tell my team, like, "Hey, I'm gonna be gone the first half of today because I have-

    22. TF

      Right

    23. KR

... a, a board meeting to go to-

    24. TF

      Right

    25. KR

... or something else. So, um, I'm still helping my por- portfolio companies. I still have, you know, obviously a, a vested interest in their success through the various funds that I'm involved in. But, um, so I stepped down. I'm just gonna be an advisor to the fund now. So-

    26. TF

      Yeah

    27. KR

... you know, I'll bring them deals.

    28. TF

So you're full time on the startup.

    29. KR

Yeah, full time on the startup. I raised 5 million bucks for it, so, um, basically, that gives us enough runway with-

    30. TF

      Phone calling grandmas? Just-

  5. 7:39 – 11:32

Mywriting (new book on the horizon?)

    1. TF

working on your own projects that you can take from start to finish with the help of a small team, and helping portfolio companies. And, uh, I enjoy both, but I, I think it's very easy to get seduced into only helping other people build. But there's something so gratifying and invigorating about working on your own-

    2. KR

      Oh, for sure

    3. TF

      ... craft.

    4. KR

      Yeah.

    5. TF

And for me, that's content, so the podcast, the audio podcast, has been so much fun for me, and it's given me a chance to develop a whole new set of skills around writing. Basically to take the one piece of it, which is researching, where I do all these interviews, and get better at that. So I've been, you know, studying, uh, all sorts of masters of that craft. Ended up hiring a gent who does a lot of the research and prep for Inside the Actor's Studio-

    6. KR

      Hmm

    7. TF

... to look at transcripts of some of my podcasts and help me to think about how to order things differently and so on.

    8. KR

      Hmm.

    9. TF

And that exploration has been so fun for me, and is part of the reason that I'm, I'm, I'm really focusing on the writing again for the first time in many years, because I just blew a gasket. I mean, it's maybe not entirely analogous to, to Dig, but The 4-Hour Chef was such a traumatic [laughs] monster of an experience, where it was, like, a three-year project compressed into a year and a half, and then lost half of the team basically working on it. So, uh, I feel like after the last number of years of sort of cutting my teeth doing experiments with startups, I have the bandwidth and the enthusiasm to come back to the mothership a little bit and focus on that.

    10. KR

So the mothership is your, is your writing.

    11. TF

      Yeah.

    12. KR

      What are you writing now?

    13. TF

      I am, uh-

    14. KR

Are you talking about just blog posts, or are you actually working-

    15. TF

      Blog posts

    16. KR

      ... on another book?

    17. TF

I'm, I'm, I've been taking notes for another book potentially, because I, I'm always like, "Ah, no more books. No more books." Then I'm like, "Oh, my God, but that'd be such a great chapter."

    18. KR

Is it gonna be, is it gonna be another 4-Hour book?

    19. TF

No. If I do another book... Well, there's one actually that I am gathering materil- materials for, which will be 4-Hour Workweek related, because The 4-Hour Workweek's coming up on its 10th anniversary in a few years, which is insane. And there are so many incredible stories of people who have went from literally an idea to IPO with their companies, or, uh, people who have used the principles in The 4-Hour Workweek in ways you would never guess. So actors who have used it to end up starring in Super Bowl commercials and all sorts of-

    20. KR

      Hmm

    21. TF

... crazy stuff. And then, uh, tons, I mean, dozens of amazing stories of families who've traveled the world. So I want to create a, an encyclopedia of success stories and case studies showing the breadth and the variety of ways that you can implement this sort of toolbox that is The 4-Hour Workweek. Um, so if you guys have any success stories to share, you can go to 4hourworkweek.com/success. Actually, that's where you can tell me about it, and I would love to hear it, because this is, that's gonna be a very meaty book. But in terms of new concepts, like completely new directions, there are a few books that I'm taking notes for.

    22. KR

      Hmm.

    23. TF

      But primarily-

    24. KR

      Can you hint at all?

    25. TF

      No.

    26. KR

      4-Hour Meditation.

    27. TF

      No. It's, no, no-

    28. KR

      4-Hour Sex.

    29. TF

      No 4-Hour... [laughs] Uh-

    30. KR

That might be a good seller.

  6. 11:32 – 13:57

    A possible private podcast

    1. KR

And so are you gonna... What would you do? Th- I've been thinking about this a lot, actually.

    2. TF

      Okay, why is that?

    3. KR

Because, so I have this, this other podcast that I'm sure a couple people have seen, the Foundation podcast-

    4. TF

      Yeah

    5. KR

... where I've done a bunch of interviews similar to what you did, but more in video form. And so, you know, I was thinking about, um, one, trimming those down, and then two, also doing, like, a traditional interview where I sit down with someone like, you know, like an Elon Musk, per se, like-

    6. TF

      Yeah

    7. KR

... and then in between those just do these little weekly rants that are- ... are more just like, just me getting something off my chest.

    8. TF

      Yeah.

    9. KR

Not in a rant like, "I hate Comcast," like, not something like that. [laughs] But more just like what you're experiencing in life, like what you're going through, like some of the-

    10. TF

      Yeah

    11. KR

... like you said, the trials and tribulations that you're going through-

    12. TF

      Yeah

    13. KR

... about different decisions that you have to make.

    14. TF

      Yeah

    15. KR

... and just like, and opening that up and actually s- setting that free.

    16. TF

      Yeah

    17. KR

And just seeing what people do with it, but I, I don't really want it to be public in a weird way. Uh, so this is kind of weird.

    18. TF

It's hard to get those- [laughs]

    19. KR

Let me, let me just walk this through, walk you through this. This is like, if you ... I don't even know that they belong to the ... if I want you to hear this, but, um, I think that in a weird way, I want it to be a small group, like a private group.

    20. TF

      Okay

    21. KR

But I don't know how I would let those people in.

    22. TF

      Huh.

    23. KR

So I, I would like it to be like, you know, a couple hundred people that you could, like, invite in and say, "Hey, if you're like, have been following the stuff I've been working on, if you care about these topics-

    24. TF

      Yeah

    25. KR

... like, uh, you know, maybe you'll be interested in like these little rants and give me feedback, and we can have a discussion." Like, it's really difficult when you put out a podcast, like Say Something Like This or something that you do-

    26. TF

      Right

    27. KR

... to gather all that feedback and have a real conversation around it, right?

    28. TF

      Yeah.

    29. KR

'Cause I'm sure, like, any time you put out anything on video, at least for me, I get a bunch of at replies on Twitter being like, "Great episode," or this and that, or, "Liked this part."

    30. TF

      Yeah

  7. 13:57 – 16:28

The benefits and drawbacks of a subscriber-based podcast

    1. KR

      dialogue with?

    2. TF

Well, you know, this is something I've struggled with, and I think we've, we've talked about this before, but I've, I've toyed around with the idea of having, uh, basically what you're describing as sort of a membership of some type that allows people to get exclusive, whether it be access to, say, like a Q&A that you do once every week, month, whatever it might be, or video that-

    3. KR

I'm sure people would love that actually.

    4. TF

There are people who want it, and then there are people who say, a lot of people in my audience, who say, "Absolutely don't do that because you're gonna end up in the, you're gonna end up getting lumped into the sort of, uh, internet marketer group, like, gray zone." Um-

    5. KR

Yeah, but it's no different than, like, a band having, like, a membership area where they put out exclusive tracks for their most hardcore fans.

    6. TF

      Yeah.

    7. KR

You know? Like, the way I look at it is, like, I would always want the bulk of my content to be completely free.

    8. TF

      Yeah

    9. KR

Like, when I do those interviews on Foundation, there's some ... That information should be free because it's helping enrich other people's lives, other would-be entrepreneurs that are listening to someone awesome.

    10. TF

      Yeah.

    11. KR

So the little, tiny rants and bits in between, like what stocks I'm excited about, what little things that I'm into right now-

    12. TF

      Yeah

    13. KR

... what things are fun, like, that's the stuff that I feel that, like, it takes the dedicated, hardcore people that, like, love what you do.

    14. TF

      Yeah

    15. KR

It's the same people, uh, reason people subscribe to your Quarterly box. I'll tell you why. I, I get your Quarterly box.

    16. TF

      Yeah.

    17. KR

We'll talk about this in a minute, 'cause I, I started a quarterly box too, but, like, I get your quarterly box, and the cool thing about it is I'm like, it's a, it's a little bit of you, uh, that is, that I would not, we wouldn't talk about that.

    18. TF

      Right

    19. KR

And I, and it's random crap. [laughs]

    20. TF

      Thank you.

    21. KR

No, but let me t- I'm always pleas-

    22. TF

That crap is a mere $100 a quarter.

    23. KR

      No, I, I-

    24. TF

You too can be a member. [laughs]

    25. KR

No, I'm telling you, I'm always pleasantly surprised by what I get in it because it, I would never buy that stuff for myself.

    26. TF

      Right

    27. KR

And, like, sometimes there's, like, a supplement in there-

    28. TF

      Like that, that double-headed dildo

    29. KR

      ... and I'm like, "What's-"

    30. TF

      You really like that?

  8. 16:28 – 18:51

My foray into a membership model

    1. TF

... Well, let's, let's talk through this a little bit because, I mean, I, I'd love people's feedback too. I, I suppose both of us would. Uh, just use #random and then hit us on, on Twitter I suppose would be the easiest thing.

    2. KR

How about #randomshow? 'Cause random one might probably do a lot of stuff.

    3. TF

Uh, yeah, random show. So, ha- #randomshow. But the ... S- so I tried to do, very briefly, I used a WordPress plugin for this, so it wasn't, I didn't build it out, for a membership site, and I was gonna charge, uh, let's see, it was 5 or $10 a month.

    4. KR

Was this The 4-Hour Body stuff that you were talking about back in the day?

    5. TF

      Uh-

    6. KR

      Or no?

    7. TF

      ... I don't remember the theme.

    8. KR

I thought you were doing something or you were thinking about it.

    9. TF

This is wh- I, I did it, I did it for such a brief period of time, I don't even remember. Because I did it for a few weeks, and what I found is there, the, the, the lower price point is very problematic in my experience, where you end up with ... For instance, I charged $10,000 a seat for this event that I threw a couple years ago, right? Almost no complaints, and it also gave me sort of a lot of, uh, margin to play with making the product, meaning the experience, fucking ridiculous.

    10. KR

      Mm.

    11. TF

I mean, super over the top. At $10 a month, though, uh, there was a very high level of ... There were people who wanted to talk for hours, you know, via email or chat or whatever it would be, about what was wrong with it.

    12. KR

      I see.

    13. TF

Hours and hours and hours. And so I got about two weeks into the first month and I was like, "Fuck it, I'm canceling. I'm refunding all you. [laughs] Forget it, I don't wanna do it." And so I, I don't know what, like, the sweet spot is-

    14. KR

      That's interesting

    15. TF

... for getting the, getting the diehards, right? Th- and- ... it, it's the-

    16. KR

The ones that aren't just there to like-

    17. TF

I'm conflicted because you don't wanna make it overly cost prohibitive, but you also want the people to be truly interested in the experience you're describing.

    18. KR

Right. And that's what you're saying.

    19. TF

Not just like, not just like, "Ah, fuck it, I'll do it."

    20. KR

      You're saying-

    21. TF

Like, I have infinite time, let me put $5 on there and-

    22. KR

You're saying $5 somebody's gonna be like, "Now that I have your ear, let me pitch you for X, Y, and Z." You're like-

    23. TF

      Right

    24. KR

... how can I, how can you help me with this?

    25. TF

      Right.

    26. KR

And you're just like, it's not about that.

    27. TF

      Right. So setting the expectations.

    28. KR

      I don't know, man.

    29. TF

Setting the expectations and price point I think is challenging. But who knows? If you guys would like that type of subscription offering from either of us, [laughs] let us know your thoughts. Um-

    30. KR

      Yeah

  9. 18:51 – 23:43

Apps Kevin has been trying out

    1. TF

Um, so you've mentioned before we started rolling some new apps, some new apps that you were-

    2. KR

      Yeah

    3. TF

      ... toying around with.

    4. KR

      Yeah.

    5. TF

      Tell me about them.

    6. KR

So I've got a couple things. Um, one of the things that I'm trying to do as I'm building out this new company is that, uh, a- as with any founder w- that has only five people total, um, you're wearing a bunch of different hats.

    7. TF

      Yeah.

    8. KR

And so I'm constantly running into different people throughout the week or month that I need to keep tabs on. Yeah, I, I wanna follow up with them. I want to, um, check in with them from time to time. And-

    9. TF

      Like watch bloggers, retailers.

    10. KR

      Watch bloggers, retailers, uh-

    11. TF

      Biz dev partners, whatever

    12. KR

      ... you name it.

    13. TF

      Right.

    14. KR

There's like 100 already that I have, right?

    15. TF

      Yeah.

    16. KR

But how do you make sense of all this stuff? And then, like, and in your professional life, like some people use like LinkedIn, they like comment on each other's stuff, but like how can you do it in, in email?

    17. TF

      Yeah.

    18. KR

I want it all done in email. I want a reminder if I haven't spoken with someone in a certain amount of time. I want to see if I have ... I just had one other guy that's helped me out with biz dev now. I wanna see when he's last contacted one of these people.

    19. TF

      Okay.

    20. KR

Um, I wanna be able to put them in buckets so I can see like how many times we've had a, a touch point with them or met-

    21. TF

      Kinda like cold, warm.

    22. KR

Right. Exactly. It actually does that cold, warm-

    23. TF

      Sexy, hot

    24. KR

      ... and stuff.

    25. TF

      Yeah.

    26. KR

And then, um, it, it, it'll show you when you had a, a meeting with them last. And so I, I found two solutions for this and I'd love, again, if people have others, like hit me up on Twitter. But, um, Contactually-

    27. TF

      Okay

    28. KR

... which, uh, is pretty cool. So you can basically create a bucket. Let's just say it's like, uh, you know, investors, potential investors.

    29. TF

      Mm-hmm.

    30. KR

You create a bucket, 30 days, and then you drag your contacts. You link your, your Google, so you auth your Google account with it. It pulls in all of your emails and it looks at all-

The Burner temporary phone number app

    1. TF

      So there's an a-

    2. KR

      Robot

    3. TF

      ... there's, there's an app called Burner.

    4. KR

      Oh, I know Burner.

    5. SP

      Yeah.

    6. KR

      Yeah.

    7. TF

So a lot of people don't know about ... Okay, so why do you know Burner?

    8. KR

Because it's fucking Burner, dude. Everyone knows about it.

    9. TF

Uh, so Burner, for those of you who don't know, 'cause I only found out about this a few weeks ago-

    10. KR

It's, by the way, I found out you can be traced with Burner.

    11. TF

You can be traced with everything.

    12. KR

How do you get traced with Burner? Because you're on a freaking phone. They know that it's tied to your ...

    13. TF

Well, I'm not using it to buy, like, warheads. [laughs]

    14. KR

What are you, what are you using it for then? Tell people what it is first-

    15. TF

      All right, so-

    16. KR

... so there wasn't any loss

    17. TF

... uh, th- so Burner allows you to create, basically throwaway or temporary phone numbers for calling or texting. So if you, like, who knows, whether it's, like, y- you buy something on eBay, you don't wanna give your, your phone number-

    18. KR

Actually is a really great idea

    19. TF

... to some random stranger. What's up?

    20. KR

I love the idea of using it for something like eBay. That's a good idea.

    21. TF

Yeah, eBay or, I mean, [laughs] obviously people are using it for dating and stuff like that, too, online dating, whatever. But the, uh, it's ... It, it provides you with a buffer where you're like, "Okay, I do wanna talk to someone, but I don't wanna give them my phone number that I can never retract," right?

    22. KR

Is this on the, the phone? Like, is it working on the iPhone now?

    23. TF

      Yeah. Works on the iPhone.

    24. KR

Oh, God, I need to get this.

    25. TF

Yeah. And you can ... You ... I mean, I could create-

    26. KR

I've heard about it. I've never used it

    27. TF

... I, I could create five new phone numbers right now.

    28. KR

      Really?

    29. TF

Yeah. You just buy credits. Yeah.

    30. KR

And then you could just, like, just toss them, and it burns them, and they're gone.

  11. 25:27 – 28:33

How underground is my underground network?

    1. KR

      As you should.

    2. TF

      Yeah.

    3. KR

But, uh, d- I was gonna ask you, and this is a real question. It's a joking question, but it's also a real question.

    4. TF

      Oh, I'm excited. [laughs]

    5. KR

If ... Do you think ... 'Cause you know some shit. Like, you know, like, how to work the underground shit and all that stuff.

    6. TF

      Yeah.

    7. KR

Could you buy, like, a, a weapon, like a nuclear weapon or something like that online?

    8. TF

      A nuclear weapon-

    9. KR

      No-

    10. TF

      ... would be very hard.

    11. KR

      You think it'd be hard?

    12. TF

      Of course it'd be hard.

    13. KR

How about just getting a little plutonium?

    14. TF

Uh, you know, I would have to think about it. I've never looked for it. Um-

    15. KR

      [laughs] I think you might

    16. TF

... I mean, there are markets for these things, right?

    17. KR

      Okay.

    18. TF

I mean, there are buyers and sellers of illegal arms.

    19. KR

      [laughs]

    20. TF

So ostensibly, if you have enough money and the right contacts, you could have that conversation.

    21. KR

No, I mean, I get that.

    22. TF

And you could immediately have, like, [laughs] a black hood thrown over your head and get thrown in the back of a white van, too.

    23. KR

      Why ... Yeah.

    24. TF

Uh, but yeah, I am fascinated by this stuff, though. We got War by Other Means.

    25. KR

This is why I ask these questions.

    26. TF

Masters of War, given to me by a chess teacher/Brazilian jujitsu black belt.

    27. KR

How to buy nuclear weapons. [laughs]

    28. TF

How to buy ... Right. The Art of Deception. This is, these are, uh, this is Mitnick. I, I've had this for years, but this is, uh, sort of social engineering stuff. Those are some of my notes. Plutonium, no idea. I've never tried. I, I mean, can you get yourself into a lot of trouble? You heard about the, was it Silk Road, the guy who finally got-

    29. KR

Oh, yeah. He finally got in trouble

    30. TF

      ... he was on trial.

  12. 28:33 – 31:38

    Mics I use for podcasting

    1. TF

things. So people have asked me about mics. I haven't talked about this one, I use this all the time, uh, that I use for podcasting. So this is the, uh, it's by a company called Yellowtec. It's German, and this is the iXm. So this is an all-in-one mic that levels, uh, without using any external software. Um, so it's, it's a really, really cool piece of hardware and ends up sounding like you're in a studio half the time, even if I'm recording an intro or something like that-

    2. KR

      Hmm. Is it wireless?

    3. TF

... in an airport. No, it's not wireless. You just have to, have to pop the, pop the card out. Or you can-

    4. KR

      Oh, interesting

    5. TF

... or you can plug it in. So it's all self-contained. So I can, I could go, like, man on the street and do an entire interview, get hours and hours and hours, tens of hours if the card's big enough, and, uh-

    6. KR

So is this what you use your podcast with? You give one of those to, to the other person?

    7. TF

I will use this if I'm just recording intros or sponsor reads or something like that. Uh, when I am in person, like what I did with Arnold Schwarzenegger, then we had just a, an, an H4n, it's a zoom recorder, and then two old-school, like, s- standup stage mics.

    8. KR

      Why not use these, though?

    9. TF

Uh, because these do not ... I mean, I could use these, but these are somewhere between 600 and $1,000, and the other mics are 50 bucks.

    10. KR

      Wow.

    11. TF

      50 bucks.

    12. KR

Yeah, but then you pay for the expensive recorder, which is, like, $600.

    13. TF

Uh, the recorder is not that much. It's about 300 bucks. Uh-

    14. KR

The only thing I don't like about this is all the start and stop buttons are, like, right on the freaking mic. [laughs]

    15. KR

Yeah, what if you accidentally hit the-

    16. KR

      Yeah

    17. KR

      ... button here holding it?

    18. TF

Yeah. You- Have to be careful. I've never had an issue with it because I don't hold it like this, like a flute with my fingers on the buttons.

    19. KR

      [laughs]

    20. TF

I mean, if you hold it like that, it's fine. Uh, but yeah, this is one of two or three mics that I use most often. And people say they prefer doing in-person interviews, i.e. interviewers will say, "Oh, it's always better in person." I find that less can go wrong if you record over Skype with eCall Recorder-

    21. KR

      Mm-hmm

    22. TF

... and two cheap USB mics. So I, I generally prefer that.

    23. KR

So do you have a dial-in number for Skype, they call in?

    24. TF

I just do Skype. No, straight Wi-Fi.

    25. KR

      And they have Skype, too?

    26. TF

      Right.

    27. KR

But you don't turn on video, you just have it over audio?

    28. TF

No, I don't use video because I'm not recording video and I don't want to eat the bandwidth.

    29. KR

It doesn't cut out on you at all? It cuts out on me all the time.

    30. TF

      I've n- I've had-

  13. 31:38 – 38:17

Kevin's new record player + our favorite records

    1. KR

Uh, yeah, so let's talk about, uh, this at the risk of sounding like a hipster. I'm gonna throw this out there. I just got, for the first time, a record player.

    2. TF

      Okay.

    3. KR

And so let me tell you why. It's not the usual reasons, because, uh, I think like this is cool.

    4. TF

      Yeah.

    5. KR

Like, record players like have been like a hipster thing in San Francisco for quite a while, like collecting vinyl, like all that stuff. My buddy, Josh Cook, who you know-

    6. TF

      Mm-hmm

    7. KR

... he um, he was selling his record player with some speakers. And he was like, "Hey, do you, is this something you wanna buy?" And he, he gave me a demo at his house. And one of the things that I realized about record players is that it is a great way to break up, uh, your day.

    8. TF

      Uh-huh.

    9. KR

Because it forces you to get up and flip the record, and it also forces you to listen to an album, like all the way through.

    10. TF

      Yeah.

    11. KR

And so I was on Spotify and I, I've been using Spotify and Sonos and all that, and it's so easy to be like, "Ah, next song. Ah, I hate that song. Oh, next song."

    12. TF

      Yeah.

    13. KR

Record player, it's a much more difficult. I mean, you have to get there-

    14. TF

      Yeah

    15. KR

      ... take up the needle-

    16. TF

      Right

    17. KR

... set it back down. And there's something really Zen about just like putting on an album and lis- especially an old album-

    18. TF

      Yeah

    19. KR

... and like listening to the, the original way it was pressed, like in mono.

    20. TF

      Right.

    21. KR

And there's a certain warmth that comes out of the speakers that you just don't get with like digital audio.

    22. TF

      Yeah.

    23. KR

And so, you know, I started getting to some really good jazz and just some like, some old Beatles records, and, uh, I just-

    24. TF

      Frank Sinatra.

    25. KR

      Sinatra. I have Sinatra live-

    26. TF

      Maybe listen to that

    27. KR

... I mean, you were at my house.

    28. TF

      Yeah.

    29. KR

You, you saw. What did you think?

    30. TF

I thought it was really fun. I, uh, I like the experience of listening to albums, and, uh, I like the fact that musical artists had to think about the composition of a side A and a side B, uh, in the same way that an author has to think about like the composition and, and order of chapters within a section.

    Walking treadmill desks

    1. KR

      Um... [laughs]

    2. TF

      What else you got?

    3. KR

Okay. So, uh, let's see. What else? I think that's it. I have one more thing I wanna talk about. I'm gonna, uh, give Tim a link when he posts this on his blog for a walking treadmill desk that I have that I absolutely love. Uh, it's a little hard to adjust up and down, but once you adjust it one time, like, you're good to go. It, it's, um, these treadmill desks, they're great 'cause I can set my laptop down, I can just bang out a bunch of emails. I actually can do work at two miles per hour, and I have my Fitbit on, so I'm getting steps at the same time. I don't set any incline, 'cause it doesn't do incline. It's just flat. And then I set it to two miles an hour, and I'll do it two hours a day, and you'll, you'll rack up, you know, 15,000 steps in no time.

    4. TF

      Yeah.

    5. KR

It's awesome. The thing is I found them anywhere from $700 to, like, $4,000. This one, I kind of, like, it was $1,500. It had a lot of great reviews, and I was like, "Well, you know what? I'll roll the dice." Like, this nice one looked really nice.

    6. TF

      Got it on Amazon?

    7. KR

Yeah, I got it Amazon. And I got it, and honestly, it's a great d- it's a great treadmill. Bluetooth syncs with your phone if you wanna do that. It, like, it does everything, and it's, like, 1,500 bucks. It was, which is expensive, but it's not crazy, like, $5,000 expensive like some of the crazier ones.

    8. TF

      Yeah.

    9. KR

Uh, anyway, I'll, I'll put a link to it on your, on your blog.

    10. TF

      All right.

    11. KR

      Uh, the,

  15. 39:28 – 43:40

Kevin's New Year's resolution (drink less!)

    1. KR

the last thing is that, um, New Year's resolution, since we really haven't covered them this year, um, I'll talk about one of my... One of the things I wanna do is really track all of, uh, the drinks that I have this year, so just drinking.

    2. TF

Which I should say is not intended to necessarily reduce the number of drinks you have.

    3. KR

No. Step one is track. Step two is reduce.

    4. TF

      Okay. [laughs]

    5. KR

      It's a two-step process here.

    6. TF

      How you doing so far?

    7. KR

      I've, I've tracked-

    8. TF

      How many dr-

    9. KR

... and I'm now, and n- now I'm starting to reduce

    10. TF

... how many drinks did you have in the last four weeks, or last month?

    11. KR

Last month. Last month was a difficult month.

    12. TF

      [laughs]

    13. KR

      It was tough.

    14. TF

      [laughs]

    15. KR

It was tough because, listen, I w- I had, I went to Napa for a weekend.

    16. TF

      [laughs] Yeah.

    17. KR

And I went to this wine-tasting event where they do this, like, crazy wine thing.

    18. TF

      [laughs]

    19. KR

This is sound douchier the more I go on. [laughs]

    20. TF

      [laughs]

    21. KR

And I also was traveling. I went to Germany and Switzerland.

    22. TF

      [laughs]

    23. KR

And so I was gone for another week and a half, week and change.

    24. TF

Those, those come with serious obligations.

    25. KR

      I mean, there was-

    26. TF

      Beverage obligations

    27. KR

... there was beverage obligations to be had.

    28. TF

      [laughs]

    29. KR

I drank a lot of drinks last month.

    30. TF

      How many drinks?

  16. 43:40 – 45:15

    My language-learning flashcards

    1. TF

      Um-

    2. KR

      That's all I have

    3. TF

... these are, for those people who haven't seen these, uh, so this is specifically for Arabic, but, uh-

    4. KR

      Is it?

    5. TF

... these are Vis-Ed flashcards, V-I-S hyphen E-D dot com. I still enjoy using paper. You don't have to. There are many options for using digital flashcards, but what I like about these, typically, and I, I haven't really dug into the Arabic all too much yet, uh, but oftentimes they will have-

    6. KR

      Wow

    7. TF

... sample sentences on them. So in this particular case, doesn't seem to be holding true that they have these sample sentences, but in Spanish, Japanese, I have these for, I don't know, probably 12 languages.

    8. KR

      Geez.

    9. TF

And they'll have sample sentences on the back for Spanish, German, Japanese, Chinese, Mandarin, et cetera. And, uh, I am going to be reviewing these, and then I thought I'd show you another fun thing for those language n- nerds out there, which is, uh, IPA flashcards. So what is... Uh, it's not Indian pale ale. It's the International Phonetic Alphabet. So the International Phonetic Alphabet, if you, if you learn these various sounds, right, phonemes, like hello friend is written that way, uh, that allows you to converse with people who are teaching any given language, if they're language teachers or linguists, and they can explain how something sounds. They can write it in a common tongue. This is just for pronunciation. Um,

  17. 45:15 – 47:14

American Dream U, helping veterans re-assimilate

    1. TF

and the reason that I've been thinking about all of this is I am going to Monterey, here in California, in the next few weeks, within two or three weeks, to visit these guys. So this is, uh, American Dream U is a nonprofit organization that helps veterans re-assimilate into civilian life, and it gives them specifically education and tools and resources for either becoming entrepreneurs or finding their dream jobs. And g- down in Monterey, it, unbeknownst to many people, is one of the most effective and famous language institutes in the world, and they do, they send a lot of the top SEALs and whatnot to Monterey specifically to learn languages like Arabic before being deployed.

    2. KR

      Hmm.

So they've refined their systems very, very rigorously. So I'm gonna be s-

    4. KR

Do you know any Arabic at all?

    5. TF

      Maybe

    6. KR

      [laughs]

    7. TF

      ...

    8. KR

      [laughs]

    9. TF

      That means, like, my dear.

    10. KR

      Yeah.

    11. TF

Um, so a, a little bit. I have a little bit, because I spent some time in Jordan.

    12. KR

      What about shatta?

    13. TF

      Don't know that.

    14. KR

      Means hot sauce.

    15. TF

      Means hot sauce?

    16. KR

      Yeah. How about zaitun?

    17. TF

No. That's the name of a restaurant on Mar- on, uh-

    18. KR

      Means olive

    19. TF

      ... Valencia.

    20. KR

      Olive oil.

    21. TF

      Oh, all right.

    22. KR

      And zait is olives.

    23. TF

      Oh.

    24. KR

      Zait, zaitun.

    25. TF

      Oh, yeah?

    26. KR

      Uh-

    27. TF

Is this in preparation for your trip to-

    28. KR

      Dubai?

    29. TF

      Dubai?

    30. KR

Uh, no. My, I live next door to my buddy Ramsey-

The Silver Cord graphic novel by Kevin Kelly

    1. TF

And then, uh, this one I thought I would show off, which is, which is fun. I was sent this by, um, my friend Kevin Kelly. So this is The Silver Cord. This is a massive graphic novel, and it's, it's about a war between humans, angels, and robots with human-like intelligence. Uh, now why would you pay attention to any such thing? Number one, the art is actually extremely good. Um, I mean, there's... You can see the paneling, the lettering, the ink and coloring, everything is great. And, uh, Kevin Kelly is interesting for many, many reasons, but he's-

    2. KR

      Yes, he is

    3. TF

... he's, uh, was the founding editor of Wired Magazine, and is very well-known. He's involved with The Long Now Foundation. He's an incredibly accurate, uh, futurist and te- technology predictor. I mean, very few people can match him. If you look at Kevin Kelly's videos from five, 10 years ago, he's just nailing- One ins- i-instance after another of things that are only happening right now, and he can hit the timelines correctly oftentimes. And I interviewed him for a three-part series on, uh, The Tim Ferriss Show, the podcast. Uh, but he sends out letters to his friends once a year sort of recapping the year, and, uh, a trip that he takes with his whole family, and he sent that along with it, which I'm pretty-

    4. KR

      Hmm

    5. TF

... pretty stoked to check out. The other reason that interests me, uh, of course having experimented in publishing in different ways myself, is that this was financed by fans. So this, uh, was, was funded entirely by people who wanted to read it, and then printed, I think, in Hong Kong. Beautiful printing. I mean, they did a great job.

    6. KR

      Yeah, it's beautiful.

    7. TF

Uh, so if you're looking for something to read, if you're hearing about artificial intelligence, the rise of the machines, the threat of artificial intelligence and so on in the news, uh, I haven't read this yet, but I suspect that there are some very interesting, uh, technological observations and also philosophical, uh, questions in this book, uh, if it, if it's, uh, if it's Kevin Kelly's usual approach to things.

    8. KR

      Hmm.

    9. TF

The Silver Cord is worth checking out. And, uh, suppose that's-

    10. KR

      Awesome. Sweet.

    Our Quarterly.co subscription gift boxes

    1. KR

Well, I don't have anything else. Do you?

    2. TF

That's all I got. Let me think. Uh, you were gonna talk about Quarterly.

    3. KR

Yeah, so I've got my Quarterly box coming out. Um, we mentioned Tim's earlier. His box full of crap.

    4. TF

      [laughs]

    5. KR

Uh, no, it, it actually is really good.

    6. TF

Quarterly.co/tim, I think. Eh, just search Quarterly and then Tim Ferriss.

    7. KR

Yeah, I think mine's quarterly.co/kevin or kevinrose. But, uh, I, I'm doing $100 box, and I did one, um, for this last holiday season. We had some really awesome stuff in there. And, uh, yeah, I'm pretty stoked because the cool thing, and I think you get the same kinda pull, is that you go into, um, these manufacturers or whatever it may be, and you say like, "Hey, listen, I've got a bunch of like really kind of like influential tech people that are kinda watching what I do and when, and they listen to my stuff," and I feel like that's what these people are that are watching the show here. And-

    8. TF

      Yeah

    9. KR

... um, they typically give you the stuff at cost or like below cost-

    10. TF

      Yeah

    11. KR

... to put, put in your box.

    12. TF

      Yeah.

    13. KR

And so you actually put a lot more than the actual value of the box. So-

    14. TF

      Oh, sure. Yeah

    15. KR

... the boxes are 100 bucks, and I think I added up, um, all of what I was able to put in the last box, and I'm not talking like retail price, 'cause that's always bullshit.

    16. TF

      Yeah.

    17. KR

I actually went on Amazon and searched for it and like-

    18. TF

      Yeah

    19. KR

... how much would this cost if someone were to buy this? And it was, um, like $140 worth of stuff-

    20. TF

      Yeah

    21. KR

      ... for 100 bucks.

    22. TF

And you can sometimes, what, what I've had a lot of fun with in working with Quarterly is when you go to a manufacturer or an artist or an author and you say, "Hey, I wanna buy 2,000 of X."

    23. KR

      Mm-hmm.

    24. TF

Or whatever your subscriber count is, once it gets to a certain point, you can very often do customized stuff. So for e- for example, I'll be right back. Uh, so this is, uh, this is one of my favorite graphic novels.

    25. KR

Oh, yeah, I got one of these in one of your-

    26. TF

Yeah. You guys talked about this- Oh, we did? All right ... a couple, couple of weeks ago. Yeah, so I'll just, I'll just mention it very, very briefly. I'll show... I don't think I showed this last time. But so Simon, Simon, I think it's Bisley. It might be Beasley. Anyway, I was able to get a, uh, a unique print run with original artwork just for the people who got it. So-

    27. KR

      That's awesome.

    28. TF

Um, yeah, check out Lobo if you haven't seen Bisley's Lobo.

    29. KR

      Oh, it was amazing.

    30. TF

      Yeah.

  20. 51:54 – 52:53

Would you like a subscription service from Tim and Kevin?

    1. KR

And if, if it's of interest, if you love the idea or hate the idea or somewhere in between of either of us or both of us doing some kind of subscription thing for like a couple hundred people or a thousand people where we, I don't know, give unique access or goodies of some type to people, let us know. So hashtag randomshow on Twitter, @tferriss, two Rs, two Ss.

    2. TF

      @kevinrose.

    3. KR

@kevinrose. And as always, love your feedback, so let us know what you think.

    4. TF

Yeah, thanks for watching. See you guys. [upbeat music]
