    Knockout Week Recap

    1. TN

This episode is brought to you by Febreze, and we're coming to you from the official Febreze-sponsored boot room, which, if you know anything about soccer, is usually the last place you wanna hang out. [upbeat music] This is What Now? With Trevor Noah. In the infamous words of Erling Haaland, "Well, well, well." [sighs]

    2. JO

      Mm.

    3. TN

      What a week.

    4. JO

      Wow.

    5. TN

      Welcome to the-

    6. JO

      Mm

    7. TN

... welcome to the podcast show. Um, and welcome to a crazy week of knockout football. We have so many things to get to in this episode. We gotta talk about the results. We gotta talk about Brazil. We gotta talk about the Netherlands. We gotta talk about Germany. We gotta talk about-

    8. JO

      [laughs]

    9. TN

... Norway. We've gotta talk about France. We've gotta talk about-

    10. JO

      Africa [laughs]

    11. TN

... um, Mexico and England. We gotta talk about, uh, Belgium and the USA.

    12. JO

      So many.

    13. TN

We've gotta talk about, uh, who else? Who else do we have to talk about?

    14. JO

We have to talk about the African teams.

    15. TN

We have to talk about Argentina and Cape Verde.

    16. JO

      Mm. Ooh, ooh.

    17. TN

Um, and we have to talk

  2. 1:028:36

FIFA Controversy & Team USA's Red Card

    1. TN

about France and Paraguay, but let's kick things off with the freshest news.

    2. JO

      Oh, my God.

    3. TN

You know, they say that football, what makes football such a beautiful game is that it can bring out sides of people we didn't know existed. Who would have thought Team USA would have Donald Trump-

    4. JO

      [laughs]

    5. TN

... fighting for a birth right citizen?

    6. JO

      [laughs]

    7. TN

      Huh?

    8. JO

      Yes, Balogun.

    9. TN

      Who, who would have thought?

    10. JO

      Florian. Mm.

    11. TN

      Who would have thought?

    12. JO

      Mm.

    13. TN

I mean, we, we've seen some pretty crazy decisions in a World Cup. I don't think since, what was it, like Garrincha-

    14. JO

      Mm

    15. TN

... we've seen a decision overruled like this Team USA player getting a red card.

    16. JO

      Mm.

    17. TN

      Balogun.

    18. JO

      Florian.

    19. TN

For, for Florian Balogun, which shouldn't have been-

    20. JO

      Yeah, shouldn't have been

    21. TN

... a red card. We all agree on that.

    22. JO

      He was-

    23. TN

      We all agree on that

    24. JO

... yeah, was hard done by.

    25. TN

But the World Cup has never cared about what should have or shouldn't have been.

    26. JO

      Mm.

    27. TN

The punishment is doled out. You take it. You, you gotta deal with the, with the, with the punishment. You gotta deal with the effects. And it turns out, if your president is Donald Trump, and if your country's the United States, and if Infantino's in charge, anything is possible. The impossible is possible, my friend.

    28. JO

FIFA is, FIFA is usually like an African parent. Once you've gotten the punishment, you get the punishment.

    29. TN

      Oh, yeah. That's it.

    30. JO

You can't go like, "Oh, but can I appeal? But ma'am, you see." No, no, no. You get [grunts] and then we can talk afterwards. But yeah, what happened with Florian, so we all agreed hard done by. But political interference into the judicial system of FIFA, FIFA normally comes and takes over your judiciary. Not just footballing decisions, but everything from copyright and all this.

  3. 8:3612:45

Is FIFA Chasing the American Market?

    1. TN

      realized that FIFA's real kryptonite-

    2. JO

      Motivation, yeah. Mm. Oh

    3. TN

... or rather their weakness is not the power of the country w- that's hosting the tournament, it's the power of the market that the country has.

    4. JO

      Oh, interesting. Okay. Explain. Mm.

    5. TN

Because, because if you think about it, you have, FIFA will host its tournament anywhere. Brazil, France-

    6. JO

      It has its pick, yeah

    7. TN

      ... you know. Yeah.

    8. JO

      It has its pick. Mm.

    9. TN

South Africa, you name it. There's only one nation in the world where football is, like, nowhere-

    10. JO

      Yes

    11. TN

... in terms of, like, market share.

    12. JO

      Yes.

    13. TN

Right? And it's the United States.

    14. JO

      Mm.

    15. TN

The United States is one of the biggest markets in the world. Look at how much NFL players earn.

    16. JO

      Mm.

    17. TN

      Look at how much NBA-

    18. JO

      Basketball. Mm

    19. TN

      ... stars earn.

    20. JO

      Baseball. [laughs]

    21. TN

They are shocked when they see the followings-

    22. JO

Mm. That football players, yes, yes

    23. TN

... that football players have in the world. Like, whenever an American athlete sees how popular and how big a footballer is worldwide, they're shocked when they realize sometimes they're earning three times their money.

    24. JO

N- not just sports player, not just sports or ball players. Everyone. I remember when there was the whole fight about who is bigger, Taylor Swift or Messi or Ronaldo.

    25. TN

      Yeah.

    26. JO

Who is bigger? Beyoncé. Beyoncé fans were shocked when people are posting, like, Instagram followers for Ronaldo. They went like, "Oh my God."

    27. TN

      Yeah.

    28. JO

So it's that. But for me, the one thing I want to say though, for me, this even goes outside. So you're saying FIFA is trying to tap into, desperately trying to tap into the American Market. I get that. But for me, this goes outside football. It's way bigger than football. 'Cause if the US can throw its weight around at the UN and make the UN bend its rules in a way South Africa can't, in a way Uganda can't, in a way Curaçao can't, then what's FIFA? The US can veto things.

    29. TN

      Yeah, but, but-

    30. JO

The US can do whatever it wants at the UN

  4. 12:4514:43

    Mexico Fans vs England

    1. TN

      the money I wanna make."

    2. JO

It's, it's insane to your point that you're saying, 'cause yesterday I was watching [laughs] , I was watching Morocco. I made a mistake. I made a mistake. Sorry, I apologize. I made the mistake of watching the Morocco versus Canada game on Fox, and Morocco scored, and the commenter went like, "Morocco takes the lead on this 4th of July holiday." And I went like, "What?"

    3. TN

      [laughs] .

    4. JO

What does 4th of July have to do with Morocco at all? But the thing you're saying, the thing you're saying, the w- it's, it's more profitable to see everything-

    5. TN

      Yeah

    6. JO

      ... through the prism-

    7. TN

      Yeah

    8. JO

      ... of the US. Yes.

    9. TN

It's actually funny. If, if I was to bet, I would've said that Canada will get knocked out first of all the host nations.

    10. JO

Oh, okay. Yeah, it would've been Stuttgart. They were the first ones. Boom.

    11. TN

'Cause they just, they just seemed like, I know it's a stereotype, but, like, the most polite host nation in a way.

    12. JO

      Mm. Mm, mm, mm.

    13. TN

'Cause I don't know if you've, if you've seen. Like, by the time this episode comes out-

    14. JO

      Yes

    15. TN

... England will have played Mexico.

    16. JO

      Yeah.

    17. TN

But did you see what the-

    18. JO

We're tapping it right before. Right before. Yes

    19. TN

... did you see what the Mexico fans were doing outside the England, um, team hotel?

    20. JO

      Classic.

    21. TN

      Shooting fireworks.

    22. JO

      Classic. Classic.

    23. TN

      Playing music.

    24. JO

      Yes.

    25. TN

Screaming at them in the lobby.

    26. JO

Trying to ensure that they don't sleep the night before.

    27. TN

Yeah, they're just like, "We just don't want you to sleep."

    28. JO

The night before. It was crazy because I've seen Eu- Eastern European clubs do that, club fans, but I've never seen a country do that, a host country. So what happened actually was England booked 15 hotels-

    29. TN

      Yeah

    30. JO

      ... to throw them off.

  5. 14:4318:11

    Germany's Penalty Collapse

    1. JO

      outside the hotel. Yes.

    2. TN

      Oh, man.

    3. JO

You should see the videos. Yeah.

    4. TN

      And speaking of insane-

    5. JO

      No. [sighs]

    6. TN

If we look at some of the results, Germany, since we last recorded an episode-

    7. JO

      But-

    8. TN

... knocked out. And you know what? For me, it's the full, it's the full sentence.

    9. JO

      Mm.

    10. TN

Not just knocked out by Paraguay. Knocked out in penalties.

    11. JO

Penalties. The most un-German-like way to go out. Yes. I'll say this. We both did favor Germany for that matchup, but we both also did say Germany was in transition. Germany was having an identity crisis. And for me, when I watched that game, especially the penalty shootout, I couldn't believe this was Germany. Because you saw the videos that came out afterwards. Joshua Kimmich trying and begging and pleading-

    12. TN

Yeah, begging players to take the kick

    13. JO

... with Leon Goretzka, who has won a Champions League, has almost 80 caps, begging him take a penalty. He refused.

    14. TN

      So-

    15. JO

Jonathan Tah had to step up, take his first penalty ever.

    16. TN

So here, but here's, okay, but here's my question.

    17. JO

      Yes.

    18. TN

Uh, maybe, I don't know when the game changed this.

    19. JO

      Mm.

    20. TN

When I first started watching football, penalty takers were, were decided before a game started.

    21. JO

      That's right.

    22. TN

      Right?

    23. JO

You're very right. You're very right.

    24. TN

      So the coach-

    25. JO

      Mm

    26. TN

... long before the game started, knew, like, literally they knew-

    27. JO

Knew. At this, at this stage, yes

    28. TN

... they knew coming into the game.

    29. JO

      Yes.

    30. TN

      The way I understand football-

  6. 18:1127:25

    Why Players Fear Penalty Shootouts

    1. TN

to penalty takers, like, or penalty taking? Is it that, like... 'Cause I, I wrestle with this. I'm like- Have players become ... Like, I was really trying to break this down-

    2. JO

      Mm

    3. TN

... and I was like, is this, is this the, is this like the Roberto Baggio effect?

    4. JO

      Effect.

    5. TN

Is this like a second system effect? You and I grew up at a time when Roberto Baggio was widely considered the best footballer-

    6. JO

      Fair place, yes

    7. TN

... in the world when he was playing.

    8. JO

      Mm. Mm.

    9. TN

      Right?

    10. JO

      Incredible player.

    11. TN

He was the best. He was the number 10.

    12. JO

      Mm.

    13. TN

      He ruled the game.

    14. JO

Put the tuco on his back. Yes.

    15. TN

Every kid was trying to grow their hair into a ponytail.

    16. JO

      Yeah. The divine ponytail, yes.

    17. TN

Yeah. To try and match him. He goes to the final.

    18. JO

      Drags Italy, kicking and screaming-

    19. TN

      Drags Italy to the final

    20. JO

      ... to the final, yes.

    21. TN

And in the final it's a penalty shootout, and he has to kick.

    22. JO

      The final kick against Brazil.

    23. TN

      And he s-

    24. JO

      Funny enough, USA '94.

    25. TN

      Yeah.

    26. JO

      Mm.

    27. TN

And he boots that ball, skies it.

    28. JO

Into the skies o- into, into the sky of heaven.

    29. TN

He, he kicks that ... He misses that penalty so badly that his name is essentially forgotten-

    30. JO

      Mm. He became a byword-

  7. 27:2533:14

    Is It Over for Brazil?

    1. TN

talk about Brazil. Is it, is it, is it over for Brazil?

    2. JO

      I think Brazil-

    3. TN

Like, like in this moment in time-

    4. JO

      Mm

    5. TN

... and I, the reason I ask the question is, um, and you can-

    6. JO

      Mm

    7. TN

... you can ask any if you have, like-

    8. JO

      Mm

    9. TN

      ... but, like-

    10. JO

Why do you think it's over? Why do you think it's over?

    11. TN

      No, no, I'm asking.

    12. JO

      Okay.

    13. TN

I'm not saying it's, it's over. What I'm saying is, this is the first time I've seen Brazil where I don't know who's next. I, I don't know who's in the pipeline.

    14. JO

      Mm. Mm.

    15. TN

I don't have an obvious, like-

    16. JO

      Mm

    17. TN

... idea of where Brazil's next generation is gonna come from.

    18. JO

Mm. I'm not worried about their next generation.

    19. TN

      Yeah?

    20. JO

I'm not worried. They have Endrick, they have Estevão. I think if Estevão was in this World Cup, he would have ad- added a dimension to the attack that they were missing.

    21. TN

Yeah, but what about the midfield?

    22. JO

Uh, the midfield is aging. The midfield is killing them.

    23. TN

But that's my point. Where's the, where the-

    24. JO

      It's killing, killing them.

    25. TN

      Where's the new midfield?

    26. JO

It's killing them. Brazil has never though had-

    27. TN

      What about the wing backs?

    28. JO

I'll say this. Okay, I'll say this.

    29. TN

I think, I think you, you-

    30. JO

      Mm

  8. 33:1442:21

Argentina vs Cape Verde Was Incredible

    1. JO

Angelo Christias. This was a team of, like, dreamers who hadn't had, like, great footballing careers at their clubs.

    2. TN

      Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    3. JO

And my friend, they came in, beat Portugal in the opening game, beat France in the quarterfinals. They were winning one-nil, one-nil. Met Portugal again. Portugal was hosting. Beat them in, again in the final, and they were just fighting for each other. When you saw that Cape Verde team, they don't have a star. Don't have a star name. Their only star name is, I think, Vozinha, who is a goalkeeper.

    4. TN

      Yeah, but that's, that's-

    5. JO

      And maybe Pico Lopez.

    6. TN

Yeah, but that's not even that to your point. They're not stars.

    7. JO

      They fight for each other.

    8. TN

      Yeah.

    9. JO

These are guys who are... So Norway, when you got Norway, when you got that Greek team of, of Euro 2004, and when you look at Cape Verde, these are guys who have bonded. These are guys who are going to be brothers eight years from now. They'll be meeting. They'll be in the same WhatsApp group. You know when they're gonna be, have a WhatsApp group for forever. These are guys who have bonded, and teams like that in a tournament are a menace. 'Cause when you can trust the man on your, like they say in 300, when you can-

    10. TN

      Yeah

    11. JO

... trust the man on your left to never run, then you, or when you know, like, if the front collapses-

    12. TN

      Yeah, yeah

    13. JO

... the whole team collapses. These guys fight for every ball. Cape Verde made Argentina earn every goal. Every goal.

    14. TN

      Even-

    15. JO

      There were no gifts.

    16. TN

Every goal that Argentina scored, except the last one, which was-

    17. JO

      Yeah, yeah

    18. TN

... that's where it's just, like, football and it's luck.

    19. JO

Mm-hmm. That header was going out, by the way.

    20. TN

      Me- Mes-

    21. JO

      It was going out

    22. TN

      ... Messi, Messi's goal-

    23. JO

      It had to be perfect

    24. TN

... was so good. It was so good-

    25. JO

      It had to be

    26. TN

... for so many reasons. First of all, it's good because you watch Messi start the play. He's facing his team. He's standing on the edge of the box. He's walking with the back line. He starts orchestrating his players and starts moving the ball around from his position. He's not on the ball.

    27. JO

He's not on the ball, yes.

    28. TN

      He's just pointing.

    29. JO

      Mm.

    30. TN

Telling people what to do. Very Pedri-esque.

  9. 42:2147:16

Ronaldo Gets Benched... and Portugal Scores

    1. JO

I can never be sad. I go like, "You've earned it." 'Cause it takes a special team to beat Messi. When, when Liverpool beat us 4-0, when Liverpool beat Barcelona 4-0, and they came back from a 3-0 down-

    2. TN

      Yeah

    3. JO

... I went like, "Fair play." 'Cause I love the game. I love Messi, but I love the game of football more than Messi.

    4. TN

Let's talk about, uh, another player that you love talking about, Cristiano Ronaldo.

    5. JO

      Yes.

    6. TN

We, in our last episode, we said something-

    7. JO

      Mm.

    8. TN

That I would argue has now proved to be true.

    9. JO

      Mm-hmm.

    10. TN

We said, "If Portugal wants to go through-

    11. JO

      Mm

    12. TN

      ... by hook or crook-

    13. JO

      Mm

    14. TN

... Ronaldo's gonna have to be off the field." Portugal was playing against Croatia.

    15. JO

      Yes.

    16. TN

Was a tense, tense match where Portugal never looked like they were gonna pull away.

    17. JO

      Mm.

    18. TN

      They get awarded a penalty.

    19. JO

      Mm.

    20. TN

      Cristiano Ronaldo steps up.

    21. JO

      Scores brilliantly.

    22. TN

      Takes the penalty brilliantly.

    23. JO

      Brilliantly, yes.

    24. TN

      Scores the penalty.

    25. JO

      High pressure penalty.

    26. TN

      Yeah, yeah.

    27. JO

      Mm.

    28. TN

      Scores the penalty.

    29. JO

      Mm.

    30. TN

But then again, the match goes back to a tense game where anything can happen.

    Was Croatia's Goal Actually Offside?

    1. JO

      I disagreed immediately.

    2. TN

      Yes.

    3. JO

And I still disagree. The reason I disagree is this. I feel everyone focuses on the sneaker. The ball, was it touched by Matanovic or not?

    4. TN

      Yes.

    5. JO

I think they're focusing on the wrong thing. The focus should be on, was Renato Veiga trying to make a defensive play? 'Cause if you say it was unintentional, then the Croatian player was offside. Personally, it was offside. But for me, I argue that Renato Veiga was making a defensive play. Why?

    6. TN

So, so let me, so let me tell you why I think you lose this argument if you're gonna do that.

    7. JO

      Okay.

    8. TN

I think, by the strict interpretation of the game-

    9. JO

      Okay

    10. TN

... of the player jumping that close to a ball-

    11. JO

      Okay

    12. TN

      ... in an offside way-

    13. JO

      Yes

    14. TN

... is offside in my opinion.

    15. JO

      Okay.

    16. TN

      It is offside.

    17. JO

      Okay.

    18. TN

You cannot, this thing of, like, did they touch the ball or not is irrelevant-

    19. JO

      Okay

    20. TN

... when the player is actively trying to play the ball and is this close to playing the ball. You know why? We have to defend them.

    21. JO

      Yes.

    22. TN

The whole field has to shift with them. The purpose of the offside rule is to protect the game from an unfair advantage or disadvantage.

    23. JO

      I agree. I agree.

    24. TN

      Right?

    25. JO

      Yes.

    26. TN

So if a player's jumping to head of the ball, and they happen to miss it by a hair-

    27. JO

      Yes, yes

    28. TN

... let's say they didn't touch it. How is that not offside? You made an active effort to play the ball, right? You made an active effort. People had to defend you. Because of your positioning, the ball might have been missed by somebody else, or somebody got thrown off. The same way if you block the goalkeeper's view and it's offside, it's offside.

    29. JO

      Yes, it's offside. Yes. Mm.

    30. TN

You interfered with the play. To me-

Why African Teams Keep Breaking Hearts

    1. JO

we made the predictions, I got all the African teams right. I said Egypt and Morocco are progressing.

    2. TN

      Yes.

    3. JO

I said the rest were going to be dumped out. And so my friends were asking me why did I do that? And also part of the reason why I wasn't heartbroken when African teams lost out, it's because I've been traumatized enough-

    4. TN

      [laughs]

    5. JO

... by African teams. In fact, Trevor, I shouldn't be holding this podcast in a chair. I should be on a couch because I'm going to trauma dump on you. So I've watched enough football to know that when it comes to the knockouts, African teams always find a way. For some reason, it could be structural, it could be psychological, I don't know what's happening, but African teams always find a way, and unfortunately, mostly Black African teams find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It started when I was a wee lad. I was really young. I think I was around five, six. I remember Cameroon 1990 World Cup. I remember my, my father and my uncles and the whole village going crazy when Cameroon with nine men beat Diego Maradona's, uh-

    6. TN

      Argentina, yeah

    7. JO

... Argentina in the opening game.

    8. TN

      Yeah.

    9. JO

And this was the Cameroon team of Toma-

    10. TN

      That's when we-

    11. JO

      Yeah

    12. TN

... that's when we thought the World-

    13. JO

      Yes

    14. TN

... we thought it was coming.

    15. JO

Pele in 1977 said, "An African team is going to win the World Cup by the year 2000." In 1990, we all believed. I remember I was young, and I think I... Maybe it's not just my memory. It's also because I've watched, like, clips at afterwards. I remember when M'Biak scored that header, 'cause that, that team was good. It had Roger Milla, M'Biak, uh, Cyril Makanaky, Thomas N'Kono, all these great players. When they beat Argentina with nine men, we went, "They're going to win it." They topped their group. They went into... They beat Romania 2-1, Roger Milla scoring a double. I remember the village going crazy. I was young, but you know, I think that's when I fall, I fell in love with this game.

    16. TN

      Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    17. JO

They went into the knockout rounds, round of 16.

    18. TN

      Mm.

    19. JO

Beat Colombia. Roger Milla, I remember clear watching Roger Milla steal that ball from René Higuita, scoring, going to the corner flag-

    20. TN

      And doing his little dance

    21. JO

... and just doing the dance, yes.

    22. TN

      Yeah.

    23. JO

And we went like, "This is it." They played England. Cameroon was eight minutes away from winning it. They conceded a penalty. Gary Lineker scores, goes into extra time. Gary Lineker scores another penalty. Cameroon out. I remember the way the village felt after that.

    24. TN

      Nigeria?

    25. JO

      1994, Nigeria.

    26. TN

      Yeah.

    27. JO

A famous Nigerian team. Peter Rufai and Rashidi Yekin, Samson Siasia. That was Amunike, Daniel Amokachi. Incredible Nigerian team that won the Nations Cup.

    28. TN

      Yep.

    29. JO

      They were on the high.

    30. TN

      Yep.

    Belgium vs USA Predictions

    1. JO

It has, like, a resilience to it, but I think they're too short.

    2. TN

      But there's o-

    3. JO

      I think, I think they're winning in 2030.

    4. TN

      There's only one-

    5. JO

      Mm

    6. TN

... uh, prediction I'm looking for here, Joe.

    7. JO

      Mm-hmm.

    8. TN

      USA, Belgium.

    9. JO

      I think Belgium-

    10. TN

      Because this was the game-

    11. JO

I think Belgium is going to win.

    12. TN

      You think Belgium's winning?

    13. JO

I think Belgium's going to w- I think, I think USA has run its course. I think all the host countries win.

    14. TN

What has Belgium shown you that makes you think they're gonna win?

    15. JO

They've shown me that they have character.

    16. TN

You think Team USA doesn't have character?

    17. JO

My friend, they came back and beat Senegal. That was character. Youri Tielemans.

    18. TN

      No, my friend.

    19. JO

      Mm.

    20. TN

      You're gonna say-

    21. JO

      Mm

    22. TN

... that they've shown that they have character.

    23. JO

      I think. Okay.

    24. TN

When they came back against teams that you say crumble consistently-

    25. JO

Yes. Okay, okay, let me... Okay, okay

    26. TN

... what has Team USA shown you-

    27. JO

      No, okay, let me-

    28. TN

      ... that doesn't say character?

    29. JO

Okay, let me explain it. So I feel like in tournaments-

    30. TN

      So I'll tell you-
