    1. TN

      [upbeat music] We both-

    2. MC

      That's me

    3. TN

... were in a position where we took over a beloved white man's spot.

    4. MC

      [laughs]

    5. TN

Yo, the... One of the only things that kept me going at The Daily Show was seeing the hate that you were getting.

    6. MC

Yeah. [laughs] You eat pig feet.

    7. TN

Yeah. Yes. And they in the- Yes, yes ... like, they still look like that.

    8. MC

      Trevor Noah.

    9. TN

Like this. They still look like this.

    10. MC

You don't eat no damn pig feet, yeah. Y'all fucking with me.

    11. TN

For real, for real. We wouldn't lie to you.

    12. MC

With, like, a, like, a fork and a knife?

    13. TN

No. No, bare hands. Bare hands, bro. Bare knuckle fi- You can't- Because the bare knuckle. [censored]

    14. MC

I'm telling you, if you got somebody in your life and they use the ba- they wanna use your bathroom, and you got you one of them.

    15. TN

      I'm in.

    16. MC

She gonna be like, "This guy's nice."

    17. TN

      Yeah.

    18. MC

"He knows how to take care of something delicate."

    19. TN

      Yeah.

    20. MC

Yeah, man. [laughs] Absolutely, brother. Ab- she gonna look at you different.

    21. TN

      For real, for real.

    22. MC

      For real, for real.

    23. TN

      For real.

    24. MC

Listen, I don't have one book in my house. I got a Toto. They think I'm smart. [censored]

    25. TN

We only had the car. It was an old Volkswagen Beetle, Volkswagen, as Americans say.

    26. MC

I was gonna say, you said that like no other Black man I've ever met. [laughs]

    27. TN

      [laughs]

    28. MC

What'd you call it, a Hocus? [laughs]

    29. TN

      [laughs]

    30. MC

My brain never feels more alive than being on a stage.

  2. 1:47 – 6:17

    Meeting at Comedy Festivals

    1. TN

      Yeah.

    2. MC

      And I was doing good.

    3. TN

      Mm.

    4. MC

I thought I was doing great, until I found out what great was. And I remember being in the back of that, some venue.

    5. TN

      Yeah, yeah.

    6. MC

It was like a rock venue.

    7. TN

      That was a beautiful venue.

    8. MC

I was in the back. There was all these girls there.

    9. TN

      What?

    10. MC

      And I, man, I remember.

    11. TN

You see, you see how he blacks out?

    12. MC

I remember. Don't act like you don't know, Trevor.

    13. TN

No, he doesn't remember. I can-

    14. MC

I, he remembers. I've, I've brought this up to him-

    15. TN

      You do?

    16. MC

      ... about 40 times.

    17. TN

      I w- I, but I wish. You see, I remember, I was like-

    18. MC

All these girls, all these beautiful girls are standing in the back, and I'm trying to talk to each and every one, and they're all entertaining me, and then the lights went dark.

    19. TN

      [laughs]

    20. MC

The lights went dark. That motherfucker Trevor Noah got on that stage. Oh, man. They was giving me their ID. They thought I was the bouncer after.

    21. TN

      [laughs]

    22. MC

It was over. It was over. I was like, "Oh, Lord. Who is this guy?"

    23. TN

      [laughs]

    24. MC

And the, and the r- the roar, the, the crowd, everybody was loud. I was like, "Man, I got a lot to learn about-

    25. TN

      Man

    26. MC

      ... this international scene."

    27. TN

Nah, man, I miss... I, I was, I was saying to Eugene, I was like, "One of the greatest gifts and curses of success, especially at a moment in time..." You know, you talking about the 30 guitars in one place.

    28. MC

      Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

    29. TN

You do realize, there was a moment where it was me, you, Hannibal Buress, Ronny Chieng-

    30. MC

      Mm-hmm

  3. 6:17 – 12:57

    The VIP Club Story

    1. MC

      He said general population. [laughs]

    2. TN

      It is general population.

    3. MC

      Yeah.

    4. TN

      The owner of the club-

    5. EU

Luckily you didn't say c- with the civilians

    6. MC

      [laughs]

    7. TN

The owner of the club comes and goes, "Yo, um, do you guys wanna come into the VIP section?" Whatever, what. So I'm like, "I mean, I, I get, I don't know, but I, okay, I gu- I'm, I'm new in New York."

    8. EU

      So who's you guys?

    9. TN

Me and a few random friends.

    10. EU

      Okay, okay.

    11. TN

I forget who it even was, right?

    12. EU

      Yes, yes.

    13. TN

So we go to the VIP section. But now we're there for free, we have not paid for anything, we have no bottle service. We have none of the amenities of VIP.

    14. MC

      [laughs]

    15. TN

      We're merely in VIP, okay?

    16. MC

This is, by the way, this is, like, the best club in New Y- just, 1 OAK. This is, like, the bomb.

    17. EU

      Mm. Mm.

    18. MC

      This was, like, the spot.

    19. TN

      And at its peak.

    20. MC

      At its peak.

    21. TN

      Yeah, at its peak.

    22. MC

      This was, like-

    23. EU

      Mm

    24. MC

      ... yeah.

    25. TN

While we're there, I start getting into it.

    26. MC

      [laughs]

    27. TN

I'm like, "Yo, this is nice. I see why people do VIP."

    28. EU

      Yeah, yeah.

    29. TN

I, this is a nice feeling.

    30. EU

      Yeah, what's there? What's, what's going on?

  4. 12:57 – 17:56

    Comedians and Celebrity Status

    1. MC

      celebrities.

    2. EU

      Mm.

    3. MC

And I think the ones that aren't reluctant-

    4. EU

      Hey

    5. MC

... are usually not that good.

    6. EU

      Yes.

    7. MC

      But-

    8. EU

      Yes

    9. MC

... but for the most part, I think, I mean, ob- obviously there's a difference. I mean-

    10. TN

So, okay. I, I think part of it is the comedian. A- and this is something I've always loved about comedians, is-

    11. MC

      Mm

    12. TN

... if you think of the best comedians in the world, the best comedy clubs in the world-

    13. MC

      Yeah

    14. TN

... the only thing that separates Dave Chappelle from a phenomenal comedian that nobody knows-

    15. MC

      Yeah

    16. TN

... is the fact that people know Dave Chappelle.

    17. EU

      Mm.

    18. TN

And when you see Dave Chappelle-

    19. MC

We're gonna get a call about that, by the way, but-

    20. TN

... in a comedy club, the respect ... No, but I'm saying the respect-

    21. MC

      You're right. No, you're right

    22. TN

... that he gives that comedian-

    23. MC

      You're right

    24. TN

... nobody would think he would give that comedian that level of respect.

    25. MC

      You're right.

    26. TN

Dave will fan out over a comedian as if they're Dave-

    27. EU

      And he's Dave. Yeah

    28. TN

... in a way where you go, like, "What, what is happening right now?"

    29. MC

      Yeah, it's bonkers.

    30. TN

      You get what I'm saying?

  5. 17:56 – 22:30

    Louis CK at SNL

    1. MC

I'll, I'll explain later. But, um, I've heard him tell this story. That's, that's why I feel comfortable enough to say it. But there was a, he was hosting SNL for, like, maybe the third or fourth time, and I was maybe a second-year writer. And I remember he, um, his monologue was too long, the, the part in the front.

    2. TN

      Yeah.

    3. EU

      Yeah, yeah.

    4. MC

You know, like, the stand-up part.

    5. TN

      Mm-hmm.

    6. MC

It was about 12 minutes, and Lorne wanted about eight minutes or something. And Louis, you know, Louis's Louis. He's at the height of his powers. He's like, "Nah, nah. This is bulletproof. Like, I've, I've, you know, done this." So at, at dress rehearsal, we have a meeting Where we have to, like, figure out time for the show

    7. TN

      Right

    8. MC

And Lorne's like, "We gotta get that to eight minutes." And he's like, "What if I don't want to?" And he's like, "Well, then I'll realize you're not professional," or some, some cold Lorne shit.

    9. TN

      Damn.

    10. MC

So he's like, "So, uh, Michael Che's gonna go with you in your dressing room and listen to it again, and just, you know, figure out where the cuts are." [laughs] And I'm sitting there like, "I'ma do what?"

    11. TN

      [laughs]

    12. MC

So I had to go in Louis CK's dressing room and listen to his set-

    13. TN

And figure out where the cuts are

    14. MC

... and find out where the cuts... Me, I'm gonna tell Louis, "I think you- [laughs] I don't think you need that joke." But he was so, I think he realized how awkward of a space that was for me-

    15. TN

      Okay, great. Right, right, right

    16. MC

... how new this, that he was like, he was cool about it.

    17. TN

      Right.

    18. MC

He was, like, asking me legitimately as a friend, 'cause he could've been like, "Get the fuck out of my dressing room."

    19. TN

      Yeah. "Who are you?"

    20. MC

You, yeah, like, but, and I would've been like, "I totally understand. I feel the same way."

    21. TN

      Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    22. MC

"You, you figure it out on your own, uh, Mr., Mr. Genius." But no, it w- I'll never forget that. He was cool enough to be like, "What do you think about this? Or maybe I don't need the..." Like, he was, he was a pro.

    23. TN

      Hmm.

    24. MC

Like, he, he, he handled it great, and I always been thankful about that, because he could've made that real awkward for me.

    25. TN

But that's what I think the great comedians do.

    26. MC

      Yeah.

    27. TN

Like, like, and I, and I mean, uh, so here's, here's what I mean-

    28. MC

      Yeah

    29. TN

... right? Because comedy is not a, um, learned profession in a pr- in, like, a, like, you don't go to school for it.

    30. MC

      No.

  6. 22:30 – 26:55

    The SNL Week Explained

    1. MC

like, people would ask us, like, "Who was the worst, and who was the best?" And I'm like, "It's really not fair to say who's, to judge somebody based on their time there," because they're there for a week. It's scary. It's fast. There's no other show like it.

    2. TN

      Hmm.

    3. MC

So there's no way to prepare for it. So unless you just do it all the time.

    4. TN

      Right. Okay.

    5. MC

So if somebody, if a star, if you, if you're hosting SNL, and you don't trust the s- the, the table read, you don't think it's funny-

    6. TN

      Oh, damn

    7. MC

      ... or-

    8. TN

      Okay

    9. MC

... you don't trust the rehearsals and the run-throughs, and the, like, you don't know the process, so why would you trust it?

    10. TN

Especially if you don't do comedy at all.

    11. MC

Especially if you don't do comedy at all.

    12. TN

      Yeah.

    13. MC

But also, if you do comedy, it's even worse. Actually, it's even worse if you do comedy, because you know-

    14. TN

      Hmm

    15. MC

... how to make people laugh.

    16. TN

Yeah, you know your type of funny.

    17. MC

So if somebody's showing you something, like, "Trust me, it's gonna work," or you don't find it funny, but you gotta do it live on television, you're like, "You're gonna make me look stupid. People are gonna think I'm not funny now."

    18. TN

      Not funny that way.

    19. MC

Now, if you're an athlete, it doesn't matter, or if you're a actor-

    20. TN

      Yeah, yeah, yeah

    21. MC

... you're like, "Oh, whatever, I just trust whoever's funny." But if you're Louis CK, if you're Trevor Noah, if you're, if you're a, a, a, a big comedy star, and you're tr- trusted, you're trusting these scripts-

    22. TN

I never thought of it that way

    23. MC

... it's scary. Yeah, so, like, a lot of times people are, they're, they have a rough go, but it's not because they're bad people. It's just because it's a scary, you know, situation.

    24. TN

      Yeah, yeah. I love that.

    25. MC

So I try to give grace to them.

    26. TN

So you, you're, you're basically going, "I want to protect their experience in the institution, because I understand that it's not as simple as-"

    27. MC

      Exactly.

    28. TN

      Yeah, okay.

    29. MC

Exactly. So I, it, there's a lot of people that, after the show, they're like, "Man, thank you so much," or, "Man, that was, that was crazy. That was, 'cause you guys do this every week." Like, they're, they're shocked by what the process is. It's not a natural process, but you see it enough that you're like, "I can't judge you for being a dick that Thursday."

    30. TN

      [laughs]

  7. 26:55 – 31:29

    The Kanye Backstage Video

    1. MC

      [laughs]

    2. TN

Telling Kanye. Telling off Kanye. Did that come on your feed as well?

    3. EU

Yeah, that came up on my feed as well.

    4. TN

      How?

    5. MC

      Yo.

    6. TN

      Yo, like-

    7. MC

Literally today, for some reason, it's been coming up a lot lately.

    8. TN

      Yo, how?

    9. MC

      I don't know. I don't know.

    10. TN

      How?

    11. EU

We didn't even speak about this.

    12. TN

      W- No, we didn't.

    13. MC

      I know.

    14. TN

You see, I didn't know that you saw it as well.

    15. MC

      Well, that's a, that's another thing.

    16. TN

      How?

    17. MC

I see, like, that video, I don't know who taped that. I don't know where that came from. I never talked about it. Nobody ever mentioned it. And then all of a sudden, it's just everywhere. And I'm like, where? I would never said none of that stuff on a camera. I didn't, I didn't know.

    18. TN

Yeah, but that's what it felt. It, to me-

    19. EU

      Yeah

    20. TN

... you, you didn't see someone was filming. You-

    21. MC

      No, I didn't. I had no idea

    22. TN

... I've never seen anything from backstage.

    23. MC

And I felt a little blindsided by that, but whatever.

    24. TN

Yeah, SNL. Yeah. And then I went back and watched, like, a documentary on that moment, or, like, I saw clips. I was like, "What is hap-"... But that moment I was like, "Damn, Michael Che." I was like, "This is, this is behind, this is the, the shit that you wanna handle behind the scenes."

    25. EU

      Mm.

    26. TN

And then all of a sudden it is-

    27. EU

      In front of this-

    28. TN

Yeah, but how does it come out, like, seven years-

    29. EU

      Yeah.

    30. TN

      Why is it out now?

  8. 31:29 – 37:48

    Kanye and Mental Health

    1. MC

      Mm-hmm

    2. TN

... and manic depression and all of those things. He always reminded me of my grandfather.

    3. MC

      Interesting.

    4. TN

Like, that was 100% my grandfather, like that-

    5. MC

Did your grandfather make Snickers? [laughs]

    6. TN

      [laughs]

    7. MC

      Did he make amazing-

    8. TN

      [laughs] Oh my God

    9. MC

      ... amazing Snickers? No. [laughs]

    10. TN

[laughs] Oh, man. Oh, comedians will be the death of me, bro. So-

    11. MC

      Oh, my-

    12. TN

      'Cause my, 'cause my grandfather-

    13. MC

      [laughs]

    14. TN

... literally when he was diagnosed with his bipolar, he'd have a red pill and a blue pill.

    15. MC

      Oh.

    16. TN

And he would have to choose one.

    17. EU

      No, man. You're lying now.

    18. TN

No, it's 100%. The ... And this is, like, before The Matrix. Not even, like, a ... The, uh ... That's literally what they, they prescribed him.

    19. EU

      He would have, like-

    20. TN

He'd have a red pill and a blue pill, and they were in e- each in two d- different bottles.

    21. EU

      Mm-hmm.

    22. TN

And so if he woke up, like, manic, blue pill.

    23. MC

      Oh.

    24. TN

And then if he woke up, like-

    25. EU

      Depressed

    26. TN

... like, super depressed, red pill, and it would get him to normal. So we had, like, those types of experiences-

    27. MC

      Yeah

    28. TN

... with him all the ti- So even when Kanye would be, like, going ... I kept saying to people, I was like, one, I don't understand why we all talk about mental health in society, but then when somebody's showing us the effects of a mental health issue, we're not now respond ... 'Cause everyone would be like, "Mental health, mental health." Then I'm like, yeah, but here's somebody-

    29. EU

      Showing you

    30. TN

... who has said himself, and I'm going as well, like, yeah, I agree, he does have a mental health issue.

    Trevor's Grandfather and Bipolar

    1. MC

      [laughs]

    2. TN

      So-

    3. MC

      Goddamn

    4. TN

... so my, my gr- so my grandfather, my mom would ask him to help with errands, you know, on the, the house and everything, so during the week. So my grandfather wakes up one day manic, full-on manic. And when he's manic, he'd, like, run around. He'd, like, he called me master. So he'd be like, "Master, master, let me tell you something, master."

    5. MC

      Oh.

    6. TN

Oh, it was a race thing. So he was like, to me, like, he was like, "To, to me, you're white".

    7. MC

      Oh.

    8. TN

But only when he was manic. When he was normal, he was like, "No, you're my grandson". When he was manic, he was like, he called me master.

    9. MC

      That's tough.

    10. TN

Crazy, crazy times. So he was like, "Master, let me tell you something, master", you know? So he grabs the car. My mom's like, "Yo, we need some bread and milk". So he, so he said to Mom, he's like, "Don't tell me what to do. You cannot tell me what I must..." And it's like, "We just need bread and milk, man. Just get some bread and milk". So he goes. He's, like, gonna go to the shops. Drives. This is in the morning.

    11. MC

Y'all send him to the store like that?

    12. TN

Man. Hey, man, you know what it-

    13. EU

      [laughs]

    14. TN

Ah, but you know what it's like.

    15. EU

      I don't.

    16. TN

No, no, no. C- come on.

    17. EU

      Come on, master.

    18. TN

      [speaks foreign language] .

    19. EU

      [laughs]

    20. MC

      [laughs]

    21. TN

Come on. We, we, we're not... Michael, we need shit done.

    22. EU

      Nah, but guys, I, I don't-

    23. TN

      Michael, we need shit done

    24. EU

... ah, Michael, that, that was irresponsible.

    25. TN

      Michael, we need shit done.

    26. MC

      Man.

    27. EU

Oh, okay. Ja, ja, ja, ja, ja.

    28. TN

      We need shit done.

    29. EU

      Okay, yeah.

    Rehabilitation, Dogs, and Chris Brown

    1. TN

We want them rehabilitated. We want to, we wanna figure this thi- But when it actually happens-

    2. EU

      Yeah, no one is there

    3. TN

... the thing everyone is saying is, "Put them in jail. Send them away. Lock them up."

    4. EU

      Lock them up.

    5. TN

"Don't let them come." Then I'm like, yo, but what... It seems like you want rehabilitation in a theoretical sense, but when you actually know a perpetrator, you're like, "No, no, no, not them."

    6. EU

      Yeah, yeah.

    7. TN

Then I'm like, okay, but then who?

    8. EU

      Yeah.

    9. TN

Where do we start the journey? And again, I'm not saying no accountability, because people say, "What about accounta-" No, I'm not saying no accountability. But I would just like us to practice the rehabilitation that we want on the theoretical side when there's an actual example for us.

    10. EU

So can pets, like dogs, have mental health issues?

    11. TN

I don't know. I'm not an expert in this. This is out of my field now, Eugene. You've taken it too far.

    12. EU

Because I've seen when, when dogs turn on, on people and then rawr.

    13. TN

      I don't, I don't know if that's a-

    14. EU

Then people are like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, th- this dog..." 'Cause the people that own the dogs are usually like, "He, he's never like this."

    15. TN

      Yes, that's true.

    16. MC

      Yeah.

    17. EU

"Yeah, he's never... We don't know what happened. He's never like this." That time another chihuahua's being mauled there, or another human being. 'Cause, you know, there's your favorite-

    18. TN

      Who?

    19. EU

      ... singer.

    20. TN

      Oh, who? Chris Brown?

    21. EU

      How Brown. Yes.

    22. TN

That story was crazy. Wait, did you see that story?

    23. MC

      No.

    24. TN

I didn't know this. Like, apparently his dog bit his, um, his, uh, housekeeper or something.

    25. MC

      His dog bit his housekeeper?

    26. TN

      Yeah.

    27. MC

      Oh.

    28. TN

I was like, damn, Chris Brown's just like, shit's just happening in his world, man.

    29. MC

Man, it's hard to be a singer named Brown.

    30. TN

      [laughs]

    2. EU

      Yeah

    3. MC

... is that he's, like ... Everything that he wants to bring to the city is something that I believe he would enjoy about the city, you know?

    4. EU

      Yeah.

    5. MC

And it, it's, it's sort of like i- I don't think we've had anybody like that and-

    6. EU

It's like the theater of yours. It's built by artists.

    7. TN

Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's exactly it.

    8. MC

      Same kind of thing.

    9. TN

      Yeah, yeah.

    10. MC

      Same kind of deal.

    11. TN

The artists just come into the place.

    12. MC

But, man, that's the first thing you said that made sense today. [laughs]

This segment is brought to you by Google Pixel. Every day it feels like I'm on a new scavenger hunt, but not the fun kind. I'm constantly switching between countless apps just to try and find the information that I need. Like the other day, I was trying to find the address of a restaurant someone had sent me. Simple enough, right? But then this is what happened. I opened my messages. I saw a video somebody sent me of a parrot singing opera, and then the next thing I know, I'm watching an interview with a woman who trains parrots. 20 minutes later, I know the average lifespan of a macaw. I've forgotten where I'm supposed to have dinner, and I'm wondering whether I have what it takes to raise a bird that might outlive me. Enough with digital rabbit holes. Thankfully, my Google Pixel 11 is designed with Gemini Intelligence. Helpful suggestions pop up right in the text thread when I'm making plans, proactively pulling up restaurant details, calendar availability, or live flight info. The info you need right when you need it. Learn more about what the Google Pixel 11 can do at googlestore.com. These AI features are available in select countries and languages for users 18 and older. Make sure to check responses. In Peru, a lot of the dogs there just roam- You get put down? They just roam in the streets. Oh, yeah, I love those there. Yeah. There's a lot of countries where like-

    23. MC

      You like that?

    24. TN

Yeah, yeah. There's a lot of countries where nobody owns dogs. Yeah, yeah. The dogs just live there, and then- Like chickens sometimes, uh, other countries, yeah.

    25. MC

Yo, it used to be like that in America. I haven't seen a stray dog in, like, I don't know how long, like, like, 20 years.

    26. TN

I think now they put them in shelters, right?

    27. MC

There used to be stray dogs all the time and-

    28. TN

      You guys had that?

    29. MC

      Hell yeah-

    30. TN

I never knew you had that

    How Michael Got Into Comedy

    1. MC

um, it was something that's, like, a fantasy as a kid. Like when you're watching comedians, watching Carlin, watching Chris Rock, watching, you know, uh, Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, shit like that.

    2. TN

      Chris-

    3. MC

      You [laughs]

    4. TN

      [laughs]

    5. MC

May he, may he rest, uh-

    6. TN

      Don't worry, bro.

    7. MC

      [laughs]

    8. TN

Who, who in this is recording? It's okay.

    9. MC

[laughs] Watching those guy. Damon Wayans was my guy.

    10. TN

      Oh, man.

    11. MC

I love Damon Wayans to this day, man. And I think, like, you know, my family a- was like a big comedy house. Like, they loved, we watched Hollywood Shuffle. We watched In Living Color. We watched, uh, uh, um- I'm Gonna Get You Sucka, Eddie Murphy Raw, like everything that was comedy, we watched it. Himself. What's some others? Uh, yeah, so I think, like, that power, my grandfather's a pastor.

    12. TN

      Okay. Okay.

    13. MC

So, like, you know, that sort of holding court, you know, family gatherings-

    14. TN

      Yeah, yeah, yeah

    15. MC

... everybody just snapping and going at it, and the people that were the funny ones were kind of the special ones. It was like, "Oh, wait till Jerome come. Wait till Uncle Nick," you know, "Wait till..." You know, there's all these people that was, like, super, super f- My brother was really funny. And, um, you know, I had one of those families that we would just snap all night. And so there was sort of a currency. I think, like, when you don't have a lot of money, something else is gonna become your currency.

    16. TN

      Yeah.

    17. MC

      You know, it's gonna be-

    18. TN

      It has to.

    19. MC

Has to be. It could be funny. It could be, uh, sports. Some families are sports families. [laughs]

    20. TN

      Yeah.

    21. MC

      Some families are just-

    22. TN

      Food

    23. MC

      ... food, whatever it is.

    24. TN

      Yeah, yeah.

    25. MC

You know, some barbecue families are like, that, like, that was our currency, was who was the funniest, who could really get you, who could make my grandmother laugh the hardest. You know what I mean? So, like, that was kind of, always held a special place. And I think when I started to see HBO specials and Chris Rock and Carlin, like those guys, and I, I started to see it kinda put together, you know, in a smart way. I was like, "Oh, you could, like, kinda say what you think, you know, like, your, your frustrations for real. It's doesn't have to just be Def Jam. It could be, you know, kinda pointed." And, and, you know, being in school, you're sorta like the smart aleck and the class clown and always asking questions and trying to challenge the teacher. Real shitty kid things, but it was making my brain sharp, you know? And, um, I had a reputation for it. And I had buddies that were like, "Man, you should, you should do it." And I never thought I could do it because I didn't know anybody that had done it.

    26. TN

That was doing it. Okay. Yeah.

    27. MC

Yeah, so it's like, where do you even start? I'd had, I didn't know anybody in show business. And then one day, uh, I was just kinda, like, in between really bad jobs, and-

    28. TN

What were you doing? What was your first job?

    29. MC

My first job, I worked at a car dealership as, like-

    30. TN

      No, but doing what?

  13. 1:12:56 – 1:18:17

    Cars, Lamborghinis, and Tracy Morgan

    1. TN

Manhattan, so- The first thing I rented when I got here, 'cause after Seinfeld, I was like, "Oh, I should do this", I rented a Lamborghini.

    2. MC

      My man.

    3. TN

And then I was like, "I'm gonna drive through Times Square with my Lamborghini". Never before have I felt l- You know, in most parts of the world, Lamborghini plus person-

    4. MC

      Yeah

    5. TN

... equals ultimate levels of cool.

    6. MC

Coolness. Yeah, no. Next level cool.

    7. TN

      Come to New York.

    8. MC

      Yeah.

    9. TN

Drive a Lamborghini or Ferrari or anything inside M- Manhattan, Times Square.

    10. MC

      Yeah.

    11. TN

People look at you like you wore a tank top on a rainy day.

    12. MC

      Yeah, yeah.

    13. TN

Everyone looks at you like, "What are you... What are you-

    14. MC

But I think Tracy Morgan does it all the time.

    15. TN

Yeah. That, that exactly. It's Tracy. [laughs]

    16. MC

I think that, I think you're making a point. [laughs]

    17. TN

That answers, that answers your question. You, did you see... Remember when Tracy's car got hit by an Uber?

    18. MC

I think you're making this point.

    19. TN

No. Tracy got hit by like a, like a s- like a small little Nissan Runaround type thing.

    20. MC

      Oh, man.

    21. TN

      Yo, Tracy, they hit his-

    22. MC

      Tracy is a wild boy

    23. TN

... he just bought the Bugatti. He drove out of the dealership. I think it was his second Bugatti. Drove out of the dealership, and then some random Uber driver just like, bam, hit Tracy Morgan in his, in his Bugatti.

    24. MC

I remember when Tracy first came home from, like, the accident, like, from the hospital, and we first seen him. And it was, like, rumors, like, "Tracy's back. Tracy's back". We didn't know if he was okay or not.

    25. TN

      Yeah.

    26. MC

Like, how okay he was or whatever. And we was just so thankful that he was alive.

    27. TN

Yeah, but he was alive. Him and Artie.

    28. MC

      Yeah, him and Artie.

    29. TN

      Yeah, it was... Yeah, yeah.

    30. MC

Him and... We had seen Artie, though.

  14. 1:18:17 – 1:31:23

    Comedy Taking Itself Too Seriously

    1. TN

      as much money.

    2. MC

      Right.

    3. TN

      And so comedy was crazier.

    4. MC

      Yeah.

    5. TN

Like, sometimes when I see us as comedians now, I go, I think sometimes we take ourselves way too seriously.

    6. MC

      There's too many god reels.

    7. TN

Yeah, but we also take ourselves too seriously.

    8. MC

      Yeah. We definitely do.

    9. TN

Like, I, I see comedians now, I have to remind myself all the time. I go like, "Yo, do not forget. You're a loser. You got bullied. You're an idiot. You're a clown. You're stupid. You're not cool. You..." I have to remind myself of that because now comedy has, like, ascended in a way that, like-

    10. MC

      Right. Rockstar

    11. TN

... now comedians are rockstar. Now you walk out on stage, uh, now there's, like, a... And it's like, no, but don't forget what this thing, like, is and was.

    12. MC

      Yeah.

    13. TN

Yeah, you might be beloved and co- but just don't forget that side of it

    14. MC

Yeah. We started believing the, the adjectives, you know? Like, a lot of times, I, I do think there was a time when they started writing about comedy-

    15. TN

      That's what I mean

    16. MC

... in the most romantic way.

    17. TN

      There you go.

    18. MC

And now we, now we all think we're brilliant, and genius, and, and all of this shit, and we're not. We're just funny, at best.

    19. TN

      Mm.

    20. MC

Like, the best, best-case scenarios, we're funny.

    21. EU

Feels like comedy's going through what chefs went through.

    22. TN

      Yes. Yeah, yeah, actually, yes.

    23. EU

      Yeah.

    24. TN

It was about cooking delicious food that people like.

    25. EU

      Yeah.

    26. TN

      And then it was like-

    27. MC

      Damn, that's true.

    28. TN

      Yeah

    29. MC

      Chefs, too

    30. TN

      Then it became, like, a-

  15. 1:31:23 – 1:39:11

Growing Up Across the Black Diaspora

    1. MC

See, I always think, I just, maybe it's like a grass greener type thing. Like, I, I thought, I thought you had, like, you had it set out there.

    2. TN

      No.

    3. MC

      I ain't know.

    4. TN

No, we ... That's one of the things that I always felt, sometimes it would be in a sad way, but in a beautiful way as well. It was like the one thing that connected me to Black people all over the world, was I was like, w- we'll sound different because of our accents.

    5. MC

      Mm-hmm.

    6. TN

We'll, like ... But I can talk to a guy who grew up in Brazil-

    7. MC

      Mm-hmm

    8. TN

      ... in the favelas-

    9. EU

      [laughs]

    10. TN

... and I can tell him stories from South Africa in the hood, and he'll be like, "Wait, we did that."

    11. MC

      Ain't that something?

    12. TN

And then I'll talk to a Black person-

    13. MC

      [laughs]

    14. TN

... in New York, and I, they'll be like, "We did that."

    15. MC

      Yeah.

    16. TN

And then I'll talk to a- and I'll talk to ... It, it's, it's this fas- it's what you said about the soul food.

    17. MC

      Mm.

    18. TN

Everyone took the culture and whatever they had, and it was molded by the place they were in.

    19. MC

      Mm-hmm.

    20. EU

      Yeah.

    21. TN

But you can bring all the threads back-

    22. MC

      It all makes sense

    23. TN

... and you can connect all the moments.

    24. MC

      Mm.

    25. TN

The same thing, the, you know, everyone will have a different word for it, but the barbecue, the braai, the, wherever people are cooking meat-

    26. EU

      Mm

    27. TN

... and then people are roasting each other, and it's informal, and the grandmother's cooking.

    28. EU

      Oh, mothers.

    29. MC

      Ain't that the truth?

    30. TN

And, and, and the kids are all in the street-

  16. 1:39:11 – 1:42:28

    Grandmother's Sacrifice and Freedom

    1. MC

water shoot up your butt after you poop, you know?

    2. TN

      [laughs]

    3. MC

She'll never know that joy. [laughs] You know what I mean? Like, that kind of thing. Like, you-

    4. TN

      Is your gran still alive?

    5. MC

No, she's gone. She, she died during COVID.

    6. TN

      Oh, yes, I remember this.

    7. MC

      Yeah.

    8. TN

      I'm sorry, yes.

    9. MC

No, no, it's not your fault.

    10. TN

No, no, but I remember this.

    11. MC

      [laughs] It's not your fault.

    12. TN

No, I'm sorry for forgetting is what I'm saying.

    13. MC

Like I passed away. [laughs] Me too. I, I, it's, this, this is how I process things. [laughs] No, but she, you know, she passed away.

    14. TN

The reason I say I'm sorry as well is be- again, is 'cause I, I flash back to one of my favorite lines, where you said, "I refuse to believe this shit happened because some Chinese nigga ate a bat." [laughs] And I remember, I couldn't believe... I was so sad listening to the rest of the story, and you said that line. And I remember going, "I don't know what's happening right now in my body."

    15. MC

      [laughs]

    16. EU

      [laughs]

    17. TN

Yo, you were like, "I refuse."

    18. MC

The worst food poisoning ever. We gotta

    19. TN

... you were like, "It must be..."

    20. MC

      Yeah.

    21. TN

You're like, "I don't believe you." Like, "I don't care about conspiracy theories. I'm not getting involved in politics."

    22. MC

      No.

    23. TN

"But I'm just letting you guys know, I refuse to believe that this, my world has collapsed-

    24. MC

      Mm-hmm

    25. TN

... because some nigga ate a bat."

    26. MC

      Mm-hmm.

    27. TN

      [laughs]

    28. MC

That's just a hard, that's a hard sell in my-

    29. TN

      But do you, do you-

    30. MC

      ... in my household

  17. 1:42:28 – 1:52:34

Money, Fame, and Taking Over a White Man's Spot

    1. MC

And, and our stake in the community, our standing in the community is kind of more important than anything.

    2. TN

      Mm-hmm.

    3. MC

But I do think where money comes in is w- I, I think it costs a lot of money to feel free for Black people in this country.

    4. TN

      Hmm.

    5. MC

      For me in particular.

    6. TN

      Every way, I think.

    7. MC

Yeah. I, I can only speak for myself-

    8. TN

      Yeah, yeah, yeah

    9. MC

... though. Like, I, like, I, I realize, like, I'm like, w- a lot of money, like, I probably, hopefully won't spend the, my, the money that I've made in my lifetime. 'Cause I don't even want the stuff. You know what I mean?

    10. TN

      Yeah, yeah.

    11. MC

I don't even really want... Like, how many cars do you want? How m- what- how big of a house do you need? Like, it don't really cost a lot of money to be me. I wear a lot of hoodies and sneakers from the '90s, you know what I'm saying? Like, this shit ain't that expensive. And I do think, though, there's an amount of money where I feel like they won't treat me like they did.

    12. TN

      Damn.

    13. MC

You know what I mean? And, or I can go wherever I want, dressed how I want, and, and they'll say, "Oh, that's Michael Ch- you can't get in here." W- "Oh, no, I know you. Yeah, come in, come on in."

    14. TN

      Oh, yeah.

    15. MC

Like, the freedom of just being able to live wherever I want or to, to eat wherever I want or to wear what I want or to n- not need permission, that's, like, what I need money for.

    16. TN

Can I, can I challenge you?

    17. SP

You know, it's crazy though, like you said-

    18. MC

      Yeah.

    19. TN

      On one part of it?

    20. MC

      Yeah.

    21. TN

      Not, not to dismiss it.

    22. MC

      No, please.

    23. TN

I think you're making a mistake of conflating the money with the familiarity of fame. I would argue that you would have exactly all of these same things-

    24. MC

      Mm-hmm

    25. TN

... with fame, 'cause what fame does is frame, fame bridges the gap of ignorance.

    26. MC

      Yeah.

    27. TN

What fame does is it allows somebody to see you apart from the collective, as you said in the beginning of our conversation, the numbers.

    28. MC

      Mm-hmm.

    29. SP

      Mm.

    30. TN

So now with fame, you're not one of those Black kids on the corner. You're not some sketchy guy with a hoodie. You're not... It's like, yeah, there was this guy. Oh, my God, it's Michael Che.

  18. 1:52:34 – 2:06:35

Stand-Up, the Cellar, and Dave Chappelle

    1. TN

You're like, "Man, you're replacing John."

    2. MC

      Yeah, I always.

    3. TN

And I was like, "No, but you doing it s-"

    4. MC

I still stand by it. I remember one time I was like, I, I, like, confessed how jealous I was of how much time you get on a subject to kinda dive in and do that.

    5. TN

      Yeah.

    6. MC

And you was like, "I fucking love that you just get to do a joke and move the fuck on."

    7. TN

      Just move on.

    8. MC

Like, literally, like, you get to kind of-

    9. TN

      Just move on

    10. MC

... do that. That would be so much more fun.

    11. TN

      Yeah.

    12. MC

It's just, it's like a weird thing. Again, you're just, like, looking at, you know, on the other side of the fence. You're like, "Wow, that, that looks like the move." And-

    13. TN

      Yeah

    14. MC

... you know, you never know.

    15. TN

But that, but that thing, you don't understand how you being there helped me be there.

    16. MC

      And vice versa.

    17. TN

      Like, like-

    18. MC

      And vice versa

    19. TN

... genuinely, genuinely, genuinely. On a Saturday, I'm not working. I'll get to sit and watch Michael Che, and I'll be like, just like in my own little world. It would be me and Kibuka.

    20. MC

      Mm.

    21. TN

And we just, like, we were religiously on Weekend Update, and we'd watch that with you, and we were just like, "Damn."

    22. MC

      But that's the-

    23. TN

      "All right, Michael's doing it"

    24. MC

... that's the dope part too, is, like, if we're both doing it, then you don't have to do all things, and I don't have to do all things. Like, so the more of us doing it-

    25. TN

      Yeah

    26. MC

... being in our niche and our corners, we don't have to do everything.

    27. TN

      Yeah.

    28. MC

      You know what I mean?

    29. TN

You don't have to do all things as well.

    30. MC

      Yeah, so it's like-

  19. 2:06:35 – 2:17:52

    Comedy Writing and International Audiences

    1. MC

      you know?

    2. TN

Okay. I'm on the road, or I'm working so much in stand-up that I don't need that as a-

    3. MC

So then what do you start with?

    4. TN

      What do you mean?

    5. MC

Like, when you're on, like, okay, I'm gonna work on it now. I'm working on it. I, I got some dates. What are you starting with? What's that first hour comprised of?

    6. TN

So I always have multiple hours running concurrently in my head.

    7. MC

      Mm.

    8. TN

That's what I always, always, always have. And then I think Eugene and I are similar, in that, like, if we haven't been on stage for a while, and you'll correct me if I'm wrong, we'll maybe, like, go to something we just, like, know.

    9. MC

      Yeah.

    10. SP

      Mm-hmm.

    11. TN

But then very quickly, it's back to generation mode.

    12. MC

      Yeah.

    13. TN

So it's like, okay, now it's all the stuff we don't know.

    14. MC

      Yeah.

    15. SP

      Mm.

    16. TN

So what I'm trying to do is I get on stage, and I go, "Do I feel funny? Do I..." If I don't- Do the things where you know they're funny and you, you, like-

    17. EU

      Jumpstart yourself

    18. TN

... respect the audience. Yeah, jumpstart yourself.

    19. MC

      Yeah.

    20. EU

      Mm-hmm.

    21. TN

And then when I'm in that mode now, it's like ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, brr, it's like, okay-

    22. MC

      Yeah

    23. TN

      ... okay, I'm going now. Now I'll-

    24. MC

      Now you can play

    25. TN

      ... I'll, I'll do everything.

    26. MC

      Yeah.

    27. TN

But I, I have, I've always had concurrent hours in my head, and then what happened is COVID created such a backlog that I still haven't caught up.

    28. MC

      Wow.

    29. EU

      Mm.

    30. TN

So, so what I do now is there are some ideas that I'm, like, working on or pondering or thinking about where I, I still haven't, like, figured them out, or the time isn't right or the... So I, I, I'll, I'll just be like... And then, and then I think the zeitgeist matches you in a moment and you're like, "Oh, okay, now it's time. I, I can say this and I can put this out."
