NYC SESSIONS: Why Thanos Was Right ft. Devin Delliquanti

Is it possible Thanos was actually the good guy? Trevor, Eugene, and Devin sit down for a hilarious and unpredictable conversation that tackles everything from the physics of Elon Musk’s flying cars to the true meaning of the Avengers franchise. Trevor pitches his most controversial idea yet: legally mandating robust storylines in all adult films to save humanity's attention spans. The crew also unpacks the hidden dopamine cycle of theme parks, exploring why buying a fast pass to skip the line actually destroys the psychological thrill of the roller coaster and how that demand for instant gratification is changing the way kids experience video games. Plus, Devin shares the unbelievable true story of his parents surviving a fiery 1982 plane crash, sparking a massive debate on why society easily swears off airplanes and motorcycles, but will never stop driving cars. Intro - Was Thanos Actually the Good Guy?

    1. DD

[upbeat music] But I don't think that makes Thanos the good guy. I think that could be, like, the Avengers are-

    2. TN

      So-

    3. DD

... bad or morally complicated or whatever, so you're not using him-

    4. TN

So why isn't he, why isn't he morally complicated? Why is he the bad guy? Yeah.

    5. DD

Well, because he kill, I mean, to quote Dr. Banner, "Killed trillions."

    6. TN

He didn't, he didn't kill. He didn't kill. He disappeared them.

    7. DD

      No, killed. Come on.

    8. TN

      They're not there anymore.

    9. DD

      Come on.

    10. TN

They're not, they're just not there. They're not there anymore. They're not there.

    11. DD

[laughs] He killed them. What does that mean?

    12. TN

There's a difference between killing and disappearing. Devin, they're not there anymore.

    13. DD

      What does that mean?

    14. TN

He, he didn't massacre them. He didn't have a private jet. He didn't have a fighter jet.

    15. DD

But the effect is the same.

    16. TN

He didn't drop a bomb. No, he just- No, no, no, no, no. That's like saying condoms are responsible for mass murder.

    17. DD

      [laughs]

    18. TN

The effect is the same. My friend is back. [laughs] The effect is the same. Ah, there we go.

    19. DD

I feel like you've used that line before.

    20. TN

      No.

    21. DD

Like, "Oh, what I'm gonna, I'm gonna be a mass murderer?"

    22. TN

That was just... Trevor, you read that quicker than his eyes. That was just released. No.

    23. DD

I've never seen Titanic fully, in, in mission.

    24. TN

      Oh, you haven't either?

    25. DD

      I have not seen it.

    26. TN

      Never. Well, what's your ex-

    27. DD

But my parents were in a plane crash. I had to be on ships. [laughs] I couldn't be thinking about Titanic, right? I couldn't be like, like-

    28. TN

      [laughs] Oh, damn

    29. DD

      ... I, I was like, "No."

    30. TN

      [laughs]

Making Up Fake Traditions to Mess with Guests

    1. TN

With Trevor Noah. [upbeat music] I always think of doing things when you meet a new person in a group as well, you can do that just for fun.

    2. DD

      Yeah, just like-

    3. TN

      Like what?

    4. DD

      ... throw them off.

    5. TN

So let's say you invite somebody over to your house. Yeah. They've never been there. Mm-hmm. But they know you, but they don't know your home. And then you and your family can act like you have a tradition that you don't have. [laughs] So you can just be like, you can just be like, "Before we eat the food, let us say why we are thankful that it exists." And then the next pers- person can just be like, "I like that I can eat." [laughs] And then the other person can be like, "I like that it makes me healthy." And the other person can jump in and be like, "It's good for my bones." Then like, "You, next." Yeah. And then you give it to them, and then they'll be like, "I'm grateful to be here." [laughs]

    6. DD

      Just make it up?

    7. TN

Yeah, no, no, no. Most people won't go, "Nah, bro." I would. You would? Yeah. Yeah. Just to see what happens next. You probably, you probably would.

    8. DD

      What is this?

    9. TN

Yeah. Yeah, I'd be like, "Ah, guys, come on. Are we being for real?"

    10. DD

      Yeah.

    11. TN

Then till someone says, "Yeah." You don't think you'd join in? You would join in.

    12. DD

      I would probably join in.

    13. TN

      Yeah, you'd probably join in.

    14. DD

I would try to figure something out.

    15. TN

      You're a nice guy.

    16. DD

Well, at, I was at Thanksgiving, 'cause we alternate Thanksgivings with my, like, my family and my wife's family or whatever.

    17. TN

      Yeah.

    18. DD

And one year they just did the Pledge of Allegiance before Thanksgiving [laughs]

    19. TN

      [laughs]

    20. DD

Which is not a thing you do on Thanksgiving. But it's like one of the kids had just, like, learned it in school, so it's like, "I guess we're doing the Pledge." So I'm sitting there, I'm like, "Do I have to put my hand on my heart?"

    21. TN

      And you did it.

    22. DD

I'm like, "I don't know what the rules are." I don't even know. I was like at a baseball, I'm like, "Do I have to just..."

    23. TN

      [laughs]

    24. DD

Like, I don't know what the rules are.

    25. TN

You take off your hat for the-

    26. DD

      [laughs]

    27. TN

      ... anything?

    28. DD

Well, I couldn't wear, I was, thank- I wasn't wearing a hat, 'cause Thanksgiving dinner, but I was just like, "Okay, I guess I pledge allegiance to the flag."

    29. TN

Yeah, you see. Yeah, there you go.

    30. DD

[laughs] But you're like, I, you ha- like, I can't sit during the Pledge at Thanksgiving dinner.

  3. 10:15 – 14:50

How South Africa Remixed Its National Anthem

    1. TN

      Africa.

    2. DD

      [laughs]

    3. TN

You can tell we couldn't bridge the anthems, 'cause we, we, when we were making the, when we had, when we achieved democracy-

    4. DD

      Mm-hmm. Yes

    5. TN

... they were like, "What's the national anthem gonna be?" And then-

    6. DD

We need a, we need a song.

    7. TN

      Yeah. People were like-

    8. DD

We need a, we need a bop. Yeah

    9. TN

... people were like, "Get rid of the old one-"

    10. DD

      Mm-hmm

    11. TN

... "because it's racist," or it comes with a racist nation and connotation. And then Mandela was like, "No, no, no, no, no, we can't get rid of the whole old national anthem because then it makes Afrikaans people feel like they're not part of this country when they are, and this is... So we're trying to meld these worlds together." So they're like, "We need a-"
