Andrew Manganelli 0:00 Name five Pokemon.
David Imel 0:01 Just, yeah
Andrew Manganelli 0:01 That aren't Pikachu.
David Imel 0:02 Charmander, Charizard, S- Snorlax.
Andrew Manganelli 0:05 Whoa.
David Imel 0:05 Um-
Marques Brownlee 0:05 That's really a deep cut
David Imel 0:07 ... um-
Andrew Manganelli 0:07 You're already further than I thought
David Imel 0:08 ... Mewtwo.
Andrew Manganelli 0:09 Oh.
Marques Brownlee 0:10 Oh.
David Imel 0:10 And, ah, that one-
Andrew Manganelli 0:12 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 0:13 The, the one you-
Andrew Manganelli 0:14 The other one
Marques Brownlee 0:14 ... [laughs] the one you always say first.
Andrew Manganelli 0:16 Yeah, there's one that we always want-
David Imel 0:17 You said except Pikachu.
Marques Brownlee 0:18 No. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 0:19 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 0:19 No, there's one that you always say.
David Imel 0:20 There's a green one that you always say.
Marques Brownlee 0:22 That I always say?
David Imel 0:22 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 0:23 Um, I do?
David Imel 0:24 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 0:24 A Pokemon?
Andrew Manganelli 0:24 At least in David and I's mind.
David Imel 0:26 Green.
Andrew Manganelli 0:27 Go first.
David Imel 0:27 Oh, was that Bulbasaur?
Andrew Manganelli 0:28 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 0:29 Oh.
Andrew Manganelli 0:29 Yes.
Marques Brownlee 0:29 Oh, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay.
David Imel 0:31 [laughs] Good job.
Marques Brownlee 0:31 Wait, when do I ever say that? [upbeat music]
Andrew Manganelli 0:35 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 0:37 Yo, what is up, people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I'm Marques.
Andrew Manganelli 0:42 I'm Andrew.
David Imel 0:43 And I'm David.
Marques Brownlee 0:44 We're all finally back in one room.
Andrew Manganelli 0:46 Oh, yeah.
Marques Brownlee 0:46 Took a few weeks, but we did it.
David Imel 0:48 We did it.
Marques Brownlee 0:48 We're back.
Andrew Manganelli 0:49 Oh, yeah.
Marques Brownlee 0:50 And right on time for Techtember. Technically, it's not yet Techtember as we record this, but in today's episode, we have Pixel 11's, Apple launched the M6 chip, the M5 Max, the M5 Ultra. We have Nothing OS 5.0, and somehow also our first render/leak of the Galaxy S27 Ultra. So if it's not Techtember, it's at least Gadget Season. We're back.
Andrew Manganelli 1:13 If that's not the most SEO intro we've ever done-
Marques Brownlee 1:16 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 1:16 ... I don't know what is.
Marques Brownlee 1:17 That's true. [laughs] Pixel 11 Pro.
Andrew Manganelli 1:19 And Nintendo Switch 2.
Marques Brownlee 1:20 Nintendo Switch 2.
David Imel 1:20 Nintendo Switch 2, yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:21 Yeah.
David Imel 1:21 Uh, yeah, I took a, I took stock of all the things that are coming up in the next, like, month or so-
Marques Brownlee 1:26 Mm
David Imel 1:26 ... and it's a, it's... Gadget Season is back, baby.
Marques Brownlee 1:28 Sweet.
David Imel 1:29 He-
Andrew Manganelli 1:29 Your screenshot gave me a heart attack.
David Imel 1:30 Yeah, it was a little... It's a lot of stuff. We're gonna have a lot of one out of 10s on this podcast in the next few weeks.
Marques Brownlee 1:35 It's gonna be good. If you wanna keep up with all this stuff, I would highly suggest hitting the little subscribe button. I almost said the little red subscribe button, but it's not red anymore. But hit the subscribe button so that you're, you know, first to be updated-
Andrew Manganelli 1:46 Do it
Marques Brownlee 1:46 ... when all this stuff gets talked about. Uh, but first, does anyone have a, "Did
Did they even test this
Marques Brownlee 1:51 they even test this?"
Andrew Manganelli 1:52 I do.
Marques Brownlee 1:53 Okay.
Andrew Manganelli 1:53 And I already confirmed that this is also an issue with Adam's.
David Imel 1:56 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:56 Okay.
Andrew Manganelli 1:56 But I looked at your... Anyways, my YouTube subscriptions tab on mobile-
David Imel 2:02 On Android. They didn't test that
Andrew Manganelli 2:02 ... on Android-
Marques Brownlee 2:03 I can already tell you they don't test that.
Andrew Manganelli 2:04 [laughs] Okay.
David Imel 2:05 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 2:06 I want you... I'm really mad that right now the number one thing showing is... Oh, no, it kind of went away. You can still kind of see it. I have a recording of it, but the, uh, what's it called?
David Imel 2:16 Padding.
Andrew Manganelli 2:16 Padding-
David Imel 2:17 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 2:17 ... is super messed up. Like-
David Imel 2:20 It's, like, zero pixels
Andrew Manganelli 2:20 ... right now... So before, it was showing shorts first. The three, like, vertical shorts on top, the bottom of them were touching the thumbnail of the video underneath.
Marques Brownlee 2:29 Mm.
Andrew Manganelli 2:30 And then as you scroll through, look how close the channel names are-
Marques Brownlee 2:34 Oh
Andrew Manganelli 2:34 ... to each-
Marques Brownlee 2:36 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 2:36 ... next, uh, video. Actually, here, wait, look at the shorts.
Marques Brownlee 2:39 [laughs] Yeah.
David Imel 2:41 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 2:41 So it's kind of like-
Andrew Manganelli 2:41 Do you see this?
David Imel 2:42 It's bad.
Andrew Manganelli 2:43 It's touching.
David Imel 2:44 They're touching.
Marques Brownlee 2:44 And it's a Pixel.
David Imel 2:45 There's zero padding.
Marques Brownlee 2:45 It's a Pixel 2.
Andrew Manganelli 2:46 It's a Pixel.
Marques Brownlee 2:46 That'd be, like, their best case.
Andrew Manganelli 2:48 And so on your Pixel, not a, an issue, right?
Marques Brownlee 2:50 Looks fine on mine.
Andrew Manganelli 2:51 Your iPhone, not an issue?
David Imel 2:53 It looks fine on my iPhone, yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 2:54 With-
David Imel 2:54 On Adam's Pixel-
Andrew Manganelli 2:54 Can you look at yours?
David Imel 2:55 ... it's bad again, too, though.
Andrew Manganelli 2:56 It looks fine? What is happening?
David Imel 2:59 On Ellis' iPhone. But on Adam's Pixel, it's zero, zero padding.
Marques Brownlee 3:01 There's no update available for that?
David Imel 3:03 I can't find it again. Like, it's not happening now-
Marques Brownlee 3:05 Subscriptions tab
David Imel 3:05 ... but when we checked this morning, it was happening
Marques Brownlee 3:06 ... subscriptions tab, right?
Andrew Manganelli 3:07 Yes, and I can, I can swipe away, totally close YouTube-
David Imel 3:11 Bring it back
Andrew Manganelli 3:11 ... open it back up, and I'm still doing the exact same thing.
David Imel 3:15 So maybe one random build-
Marques Brownlee 3:16 It's back. It's back.
Andrew Manganelli 3:17 It's ba- Yours is doing it again? Okay. I had to ma-
David Imel 3:19 Still doing it.
Andrew Manganelli 3:19 This was one that was, like, felt so specific, I had to check with someone else. But the fact that Adam's is doing it, too.
David Imel 3:24 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 3:25 It looks awful. Sorry. That, like, made me-
Marques Brownlee 3:27 It's fine. Google's done worse on phone
Andrew Manganelli 3:28 ... so mad when I looked at it yesterday.
David Imel 3:29 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 3:30 Also, when I kept checking last night for it to work, every time I reopened YouTube, it just reopened it as a Short playing, which was really weird.
Marques Brownlee 3:37 Oh, that's happened to me before.
Andrew Manganelli 3:38 Why?
Marques Brownlee 3:39 It's weird that they kind of seem to tr- to treat, like, the Shorts feed and the YouTube app as, like, not separate, but as different instances. So if I have a long-form video playing-
Andrew Manganelli 3:48 Mm-hmm
Marques Brownlee 3:48 ... and then I open a Short, it will full screen play the Short, and then when I leave the Short, the long-form video instantly resumes. Has that ever happened to you?
David Imel 3:56 Whoa.
Andrew Manganelli 3:56 No.
Marques Brownlee 3:56 They're, like, two different instances.
David Imel 3:57 That happens to me, but it doesn't always work. Like, I'll... Not every time, but a lot of times, the long-form will just keep playing while the Short is playing.
Marques Brownlee 4:04 That's happened, and I can tell it's not supposed to do that.
Andrew Manganelli 4:07 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 4:07 But yeah, it, that's happened to me as well. Yeah, and so that sometimes gets kind of weird.
David Imel 4:12 Yeah, I don't really watch YouTube Shorts at all. I know they've had a lot of growth, but I don't really watch them at all.
Marques Brownlee 4:17 Hmm.
David Imel 4:18 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 4:18 That's actually pretty impressive. It's hard to avoid. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 4:21 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 4:21 They're kind of shoved in your face in the app a lot.
Andrew Manganelli 4:23 Yeah.
David Imel 4:24 I, I guess I don't watch a lot of YouTube videos on my phone, and when I do, I have the screen off.
Marques Brownlee 4:30 Mm-hmm.
David Imel 4:30 So yeah, it's funny.
Andrew Manganelli 4:31 It's funny, most of the YouTube I watch on my phone is a sh- is Shorts, and then longer-form stuff I watch on my TV.
David Imel 4:37 Yeah, I watch, I watch YouTube videos on my projector, and that's about it.
Marques Brownlee 4:39 I forgot how weird all of our YouTube watching is.
Andrew Manganelli 4:41 It's very strange.
David Imel 4:42 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 4:43 You watch it on, in your pocket with the screen off. You watch it-
Andrew Manganelli 4:45 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 4:46 ... on, on a projector.
David Imel 4:47 Projector.
Marques Brownlee 4:47 You watch it, uh-
Andrew Manganelli 4:48 On TV
Marques Brownlee 4:49 ... on a TV.
Andrew Manganelli 4:49 I do screen off in the car to listen all the time.
Marques Brownlee 4:52 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 4:53 Um, or I do Shorts sometimes.
David Imel 4:53 Every video is a podcast.
Marques Brownlee 4:55 Marques-
David Imel 4:55 I don't do any of those things
Marques Brownlee 4:55 ... you wanna talk about weird YouTube, I, I open my YouTube app and I'm two hours and nine minutes into a three hour and 49 video. Uh, you want, you wanna know what the video is? It's the 1995 American League, uh, at the ALDS, Game 5.
Andrew Manganelli 5:09 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 5:09 Like, uninterrupted broadcast?
David Imel 5:10 Yeah, Yankees at Mariners.
Marques Brownlee 5:11 [laughs] Oh, my goodness.
Andrew Manganelli 5:13 Nice.
Marques Brownlee 5:13 Yeah, you know, we all have very different ways of using YouTube. I'm about to get on a flight this afternoon, and, uh, I have downloaded a bunch of videos, but it's a Starlink flight, so I didn't have to.
Andrew Manganelli 5:22 Oh.
David Imel 5:22 Oh.
Andrew Manganelli 5:23 You still should.
David Imel 5:24 Yeah, wasn't it last time you got on-
Andrew Manganelli 5:25 I will never fully trust internet on a plane. I can tell you-
David Imel 5:28 Yeah, last time you got on a plane, it was like, "Never mind, we don't have Starlink," and you were like, "Damn it." [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 5:31 Yeah, if you get on a United regional flight that's, that has Starlink on it, I promise you don't need to download anything.
Andrew Manganelli 5:38 Promise.
David Imel 5:38 It's fast.
Marques Brownlee 5:38 I promise. It's f- it's phenomenally fast.
David Imel 5:41 I just wanna play Dota on it.
Andrew Manganelli 5:42 How much does it cost?
Marques Brownlee 5:43 Free.
David Imel 5:43 It's free.
Marques Brownlee 5:43 It's-
David Imel 5:44 Yeah, you know what's funny?
Andrew Manganelli 5:45 No.
David Imel 5:45 If you don't have Starlink, it costs $8, and if they do have Starlink, it's free.
Marques Brownlee 5:50 So it's $8 for-
David Imel 5:51 Yeah, for the worst Wi-Fi
Marques Brownlee 5:51 ... horrible-
Andrew Manganelli 5:52 For pretending you have internet?
Marques Brownlee 5:53 [laughs]
David Imel 5:53 Yeah, for the bad Wi-Fi.
Marques Brownlee 5:54 And for the amazing Wi-Fi-
Andrew Manganelli 5:55 That's funny
Marques Brownlee 5:55 ... it's free. Yeah. Yeah, it's awesome.
David Imel 5:57 It's crazy.
Marques Brownlee 5:58 I had somebody blip me something while I was on flight. I forgot. A couple flights ago, I got a blip-
Andrew Manganelli 6:02 Really?
Marques Brownlee 6:02 ... and I accepted it, and it was fine. Part of me wants to-
David Imel 6:04 What, what was the blip?
Marques Brownlee 6:05 It was from s- I think Harper captioned a Short-
David Imel 6:07 Oh
Marques Brownlee 6:07 ... and, like, blipped it to me while I was flying.
Andrew Manganelli 6:09 Really?
David Imel 6:09 Oh, okay.
Marques Brownlee 6:09 And I downloaded it.
David Imel 6:10 I thought it was a random person.
Marques Brownlee 6:11 No, no, no, yeah. It was great.
David Imel 6:12 For some reason, it feels like if you p- If someone on a plane blips something to someone else on another plane, it would make the plane crash.
Andrew Manganelli 6:18 [laughs]
David Imel 6:18 I, I don't know why-
Andrew Manganelli 6:19 [laughs]
David Imel 6:19 ... but my brain is just like-
Marques Brownlee 6:21 The, the fl- the flights, like, sync up and, like, fly the same direction.
David Imel 6:24 I don't know what it is, but...
Marques Brownlee 6:25 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 6:26 That's... You could play RuneScape on the plane now.
Marques Brownlee 6:28 Mm.
David Imel 6:28 I might have to start playing RuneScape again.
Marques Brownlee 6:29 100%.
Andrew Manganelli 6:30 That's a perfect plane game.
Marques Brownlee 6:32 I saw somebody FaceTiming.
Andrew Manganelli 6:34 Oh.
David Imel 6:34 You're not supposed to do that.
Andrew Manganelli 6:34 Oh, I don't wanna do that.
Marques Brownlee 6:35 You're not supposed to.
Andrew Manganelli 6:36 You're not supposed to FaceTime?
Marques Brownlee 6:37 But you can.
David Imel 6:38 You're not supposed to do video calls or even audio calls on planes.
Marques Brownlee 6:41 I think you're not, you're just not supposed to have it on speaker.
Andrew Manganelli 6:44 That's just 'cause it's annoying for other passengers.
David Imel 6:46 I think you're not supposed to even do any kind of audio call. I think that, that's a rule.
Marques Brownlee 6:49 Mm, well.
David Imel 6:50 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 6:51 With Starlink, people have been-
Andrew Manganelli 6:52 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 6:52 ... breaking that rule.
David Imel 6:53 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Marques Brownlee 6:54 Yeah. Well, your YouTube glitch on the Pixels has reminded me that we all have lots of Pixels here
Thoughts on Pixel 11
Marques Brownlee 6:59 in this room-
David Imel 6:59 Yeah, we do
Marques Brownlee 6:59 ... and, uh, we haven't actually finished talking about our final thoughts on Pixel 11s.
David Imel 7:03 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 7:03 So we might as well do that. Pixel 11 lineup thoughts.
David Imel 7:07 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 7:08 My full review is in the works, so if you want that detailed deep dive and cinema, uh, stay tuned for that. But-
David Imel 7:17 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 7:17 ... uh, I have been daily driving the Pixel 11 Pro in matte black for, by the time you hear this, close to three weeks-
David Imel 7:23 Three weeks
Marques Brownlee 7:23 ... I think.
Andrew Manganelli 7:24 Pro or Pro XL?
Marques Brownlee 7:25 Pro XL.
Andrew Manganelli 7:25 Okay.
Marques Brownlee 7:26 Good call. Pro XL.
David Imel 7:27 And I, I went back to the regular Pro this year, and I usually use the XL, so-
Marques Brownlee 7:30 Yeah
David Imel 7:30 ... I kinda was wishing I was using the XL, to be honest.
Marques Brownlee 7:32 It's another one of those phones that I really like-
David Imel 7:35 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 7:35 ... and will not be recommending to almost anyone ever. Um-
Andrew Manganelli 7:39 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 7:40 It's funny, we've talked about-
David Imel 7:41 Fair
Marques Brownlee 7:42 ... in the past how the Pro phones are harder to recommend because of how good the base phones have gotten.
David Imel 7:46 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 7:47 It's more true than ever. The Pro phones have less RAM than last year's Pro phones. They start at the same amount of RAM as the regular phone-
David Imel 7:54 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 7:54 ... so they're even closer together. You still have three cameras, you still have a bright display, you still have all this stuff. The reason to spend an extra $200 or whatever it is for the Pro phone, uh, matte black rails, I guess, like a slightly better set of cameras.
David Imel 8:09 You get better cameras-
Marques Brownlee 8:10 But-
David Imel 8:10 ... you get faster night sight.
Marques Brownlee 8:12 Yeah.
David Imel 8:12 You guys are forgetting Highlight.
Marques Brownlee 8:14 Highlight, yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 8:15 Highlight's the best feature.
Marques Brownlee 8:16 So Highlight isn't a good reason to [laughs] buy the Pro is my take.
Andrew Manganelli 8:19 I'll give you five reasons to buy the Pro.
Marques Brownlee 8:21 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 8:22 Pink, green, white.
Marques Brownlee 8:24 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 8:25 Whatever the other two colors are.
David Imel 8:26 I don't know, this makes my eyes bleed. I-
Marques Brownlee 8:27 It's a very bright... That's the fuchsia one.
David Imel 8:29 It's really... Yeah, this is the non-Pro fuchsia.
Marques Brownlee 8:32 Yeah.
David Imel 8:32 It hurts. It hurts.
Marques Brownlee 8:33 It's a nice color.
Andrew Manganelli 8:34 I like it.
David Imel 8:35 Uh...
Marques Brownlee 8:36 It's a nice co-
Andrew Manganelli 8:37 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 8:37 It's a commitment to the color, too. It's not just like, "Oh, we, we heard you liked color-"
David Imel 8:41 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 8:41 ... "so here's a splash of... We were thinking about it."
David Imel 8:43 Touching this phone, so this is the standard Pixel 11, it reminds me how much I wish they would put the matte rails on all of the Pro color phones.
Marques Brownlee 8:51 I do too.
David Imel 8:51 Like, the, on the, on the black, it's cool. I'm glad that they committed to the bit.
Marques Brownlee 8:55 Appreciate that.
David Imel 8:56 Yeah, appreciate that. Uh, definitely didn't do that [laughs] just for you, of course. Uh, but I would really like this, like, on the green and on the, on the, like, dune color. I don't know. It's, it's... Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 9:07 Yeah.
David Imel 9:08 Yeah, so why, why do you not wanna recommend these phones to anybody? Just because they're so-
Marques Brownlee 9:13 So-
David Imel 9:13 ... similar and because last year is, like, almost better in some ways?
Marques Brownlee 9:16 So it's specifically the upgraded phones over the base.
David Imel 9:19 Okay.
Marques Brownlee 9:19 So the only one I could really recommend to most people is the Pixel 11.
David Imel 9:22 Okay.
Marques Brownlee 9:22 The Pixel 11 is now 8... It's $900 now.
David Imel 9:26 Yeah, 899.
Marques Brownlee 9:27 Um, and for a $900 phone, like, you can get a lot of phone. You can get a OnePlus 15, you can get a, a Find X9 or whatever. Like, there are lots of really nice phones with crazy multiple cameras and super fast-charging batteries and all this stuff. Uh, but if you're getting a Pixel, it's because you want the Pixel experience, you want all of the software, Android 17 out the box, all that stuff, and that's great, and you get it, and the hardware is fine. But the second you start thinking about, oh, I might wanna get the Pro or the Pro XL or the Pro Fold, well, you have to find another couple hundred more dollars of value in that, and I don't see that in those phones.
David Imel 10:02 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 10:02 Uh, especially not the Pro or the Pro XL-
David Imel 10:05 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 10:05 ... even though I like using them.
David Imel 10:06 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 10:06 And they're totally fine phones.
David Imel 10:08 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 10:08 So that's the general thesis. The Pro Fold is, like, back to being fine, 'cause all the Folds are expensive, and it has the IP68 angle, it has the Google software experience angle, so there are reasons you could get that phone.
David Imel 10:24 And it looks cooler. The camera bar is cooler this year.
Marques Brownlee 10:27 It's r- it's nice to use closed, too.
David Imel 10:28 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 10:29 I like it.
David Imel 10:29 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 10:30 Um, but yeah, it's, it's, they're fine phones.
David Imel 10:32 I have a question. Did you use Gemini Intelligence a lot when, during your testing?
Marques Brownlee 10:37 Not any more than I was on any other phone.
David Imel 10:39 Okay, 'cause I was, like, pressure testing the hell out of it. And, uh, Gemini Intelligence, for people that don't know, is, like, the experience where randomly a little Gemini chip will pop up on your screen when it thinks it can do something for you.
Marques Brownlee 10:52 Mm.
David Imel 10:52 So one of the examples is, like, if you wanna make a reservation at a... Uh, if someone texts you and they said, "Did you make that reservation at this restaurant?" That a little chip will pop up that's like-
Marques Brownlee 11:02 Mm-hmm
David Imel 11:02 ... "Make the reservation." A couple of things. One, the animation they show on their website is completely different and way cleaner than the actual process that happens when this happens.
Marques Brownlee 11:14 Mm-hmm.
David Imel 11:14 Number two, the thing that actually happens is this little chip pops up. You have to have OpenTable installed. It only works for OpenTable. You have to go into the settings of the phone and then go to the Gemini Intellig- uh, Proactive Assistance, and then you have to go and you have to click OpenTable on. So everything's off by default.
Marques Brownlee 11:32 Mm.
David Imel 11:32 Which generally I'm like, opt-in is better. In this case, the fact that they don't really tell you which integrations work with Gemini Intelligence, like, there's not really a list, and then you have to go in and just manually tick on every single option. And then the process of making it work is just so convoluted. Like, you'll... It'll be like, "Make a reservation," you tap a button. The only way to make this chip pop up, if you, is if someone texts you and says, "Can you make a reservation at this place at this time?"
Andrew Manganelli 12:04 Oh, boy.
David Imel 12:05 If they do n-
Andrew Manganelli 12:05 On this day
David Imel 12:06 ... on this day. So it's, it's either a date or time-
Andrew Manganelli 12:09 Mm
David Imel 12:09 ... but it's this place and date or time, and if they do not say those exact two things in the text, it will not pop up.
Andrew Manganelli 12:17 Yeah.
David Imel 12:17 And Google doesn't tell you-
Marques Brownlee 12:19 What you need to make these chips pop up. So, uh, and also, I don't know. My other angle on this is, like, if someone's gonna text you to ask you to make the reservation, and you're gonna have your AI do it, why don't they just have their AI do the reservation? You know what I mean? Like, why would you text someone else and say, "Can you make this reservation?" And just set it, instead of just on your Gemini phone just being like, "Make the reservation" [laughs] I don't know.
Andrew Manganelli 12:43 I think they're assuming the person is just... Like, you were like, "Oh, yeah, let's go there. I'll make a reservation." And now they're just being like, "Oh, did you make it for this time?" Which is like-
Marques Brownlee 12:51 Yeah, but it's such a-
Andrew Manganelli 12:52 There's a couple-
Marques Brownlee 12:52 ... narrow use case
Andrew Manganelli 12:53 ... it is a very narrow use case.
Marques Brownlee 12:55 It is.
Andrew Manganelli 12:55 It's also funny because, what, three or four years ago at, uh, IO, they were telling us about how, like, our phones would be able to call places and make reservations.
Marques Brownlee 13:05 That was, like, a long time ago.
Andrew Manganelli 13:06 Yeah, with no... And that didn't work because no restaurant person wanted to talk to the robot-
Marques Brownlee 13:11 The robot
Andrew Manganelli 13:11 ... that called them.
Marques Brownlee 13:12 Yeah. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 13:13 And now we're like, oh, now if someone texts you exactly the date and time and place-
Marques Brownlee 13:18 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 13:18 ... maybe if you have this app installed with these permissions checked off-
Marques Brownlee 13:22 That you checked
Andrew Manganelli 13:22 ... our AI might be able to get it.
Marques Brownlee 13:25 Yeah. Here's another-
Andrew Manganelli 13:26 50% of the time
Marques Brownlee 13:26 ... here's another funny one. [laughs] Okay, so another integration with Gemini Intelligence is that if you have a grocery list on Google Keep, which is-
Andrew Manganelli 13:34 I do.
Marques Brownlee 13:35 Yes. Okay.
Andrew Manganelli 13:36 I know that that's not common-
Marques Brownlee 13:37 Wait, wait
Andrew Manganelli 13:37 ... but I do.
Marques Brownlee 13:37 Can I make a guess at what I want this to be before you tell me?
Andrew Manganelli 13:41 Sure.
Marques Brownlee 13:41 'Cause I have like... You said this exactly.
Andrew Manganelli 13:44 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 13:44 If it could n- ask which grocery store I'm going to and rearrange it based on the aisle numbers at that grocery store, that is my, like-
Andrew Manganelli 13:52 Absolutely not
Marques Brownlee 13:53 ... number one-
Andrew Manganelli 13:54 Not even close
Marques Brownlee 13:54 ... thing I want one to do. So whatever-
Andrew Manganelli 13:56 Maybe by 2040
Marques Brownlee 13:56 ... you say now will disappoint me.
Andrew Manganelli 13:57 Not even close. Like, I've got to tell you how this works. [laughs] So the only, like... It has, like, some grocery integrations, but y- it's, like, got Costco, and it's got, um, Instacart. Okay, you have to have these apps installed on your phone. You have to have a grocery list in Google Keep. It can't just be called Grocery List. It has to be called, like, Instacart or something. The, the, the n-
Marques Brownlee 14:18 Oh
Andrew Manganelli 14:18 ... title of the Keep, the Google Keep, like, list has to be, like, Instacart Shopping List or, like, something or, like, Costco Shopping List.
Marques Brownlee 14:26 Oh, that's dumb because when you add a something to the grocery list, it has... That means you have to have a list in Keep called Groceries.
Andrew Manganelli 14:33 Yes.
Marques Brownlee 14:34 So that's a different list.
Andrew Manganelli 14:35 I, you know-
Marques Brownlee 14:36 Yeah, this-
Andrew Manganelli 14:36 We... This might not be the same forever, but when we were testing this extensively, we had it just called Grocery Shopping List, and it didn't work, and we changed it to be called Instacart Shopping List, and then it did work.
Marques Brownlee 14:47 That's crazy.
Andrew Manganelli 14:48 So you have to have a shopping list in Google Keep, which is already really specific, and it has to be called something specific-
Marques Brownlee 14:53 Mm
Andrew Manganelli 14:53 ... so that Gemini Intelligence can know that it's a shopping list, even though it apparently can't just be called Shopping List, and then it will, like, suggest meals based on the things that you have in your shopping list.
Marques Brownlee 15:04 Oh.
Andrew Manganelli 15:04 And it'll open up Instacart and, like, be like, "You should buy these items." It's just like, the, the, the way that I put this in my review was, like, it feels like these were made in the, like, Silicon Valley society if Utopia Factory.
Marques Brownlee 15:19 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 15:20 Where some CEO was like, "I want to do 5% less work, so this ex- extremely specific s- set of scenarios and use cases that I have in my life, we're going to ship for everybody."
Marques Brownlee 15:32 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 15:33 Right?
Marques Brownlee 15:33 I would almost even say it feels like big idea, so many restrictions. We have to narrow it down to the smallest idea possible, where we hope we can nail a demo of it-
Andrew Manganelli 15:46 And Google doesn't-
Marques Brownlee 15:46 ... to make it look good
Andrew Manganelli 15:46 ... tell you what those-
Marques Brownlee 15:48 Yeah, yeah
Andrew Manganelli 15:48 ... parameters are. That's the other thing. Like, they don't tell you what you need to actually invoke these things, and that's what's confusing. And I get it. I talked to them, and they were like, "Well, we don't, we don't wanna make it pop up too often," right? "We don't wanna accidentally invoke these chips."
Marques Brownlee 16:01 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 16:02 But they don't tell you what the parameters of actually invoking the chips are in the first place.
Marques Brownlee 16:06 That is really interesting. It's almost like the opposite of, like, the Tesla approach, where they'll get on stage and be like, "Yeah, your car will just be able to drive on any street at any time, all the time."
Andrew Manganelli 16:15 Yeah. It'll fly.
Marques Brownlee 16:16 And you're like, "Wait, all the time?" And you're like-
Andrew Manganelli 16:18 That's right
Marques Brownlee 16:18 ... "Well, s- there will be some roads where you ask it, and it'll mess up, and you'll have to, like, take control and then turn it back on later. But, like, just for the sake of simplicity, like, it'll work all the time on everything."
Andrew Manganelli 16:27 Yeah, yeah.
Marques Brownlee 16:27 And you're like, "Geez, that's a big claim." And Google's on the other side like, "Yeah, so if you wanted to book a concert ticket after you see a poster that has all the details for the concert-
Andrew Manganelli 16:37 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 16:37 ... dates and times on it-
Andrew Manganelli 16:39 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 16:39 ... and you take a picture of it with our app, and then you enable the permissions, it'll probably book those tickets for you."
Andrew Manganelli 16:45 And the concert's on Ticketmaster.
Marques Brownlee 16:47 Yeah. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 16:47 And you, you went into the settings, and you checked it on. Yeah, it's, it's, it's ironic to me because I feel like the way that Gemini has been pitched in the past has been Google understands what's on your screen. It agentically reads what's happening on your phone. You don't need to have these app hooks like Apple has. Like, Siri, these developers build in these API tools to make it so Siri can access these apps and agentically use the apps for you.
Marques Brownlee 17:12 Mm-hmm.
Andrew Manganelli 17:12 And Google's mentality, it seems like what they've been pitching is that you don't really have to do any of this, and Gemini just knows what's happening, and it can just figure it out.
Marques Brownlee 17:21 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 17:21 But that's not what they're shipping with, with-
Marques Brownlee 17:24 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 17:24 Yeah ... Gemini Intelligence.
Marques Brownlee 17:26 Proactive assistance.
Andrew Manganelli 17:27 It-
Marques Brownlee 17:27 It's very specific
Andrew Manganelli 17:28 ... it feels like AI, the, the dream AI for so long is like, "I want a personal assistant that knows everything about me."
Marques Brownlee 17:35 Mm-hmm.
Andrew Manganelli 17:35 Every AI that I've seen has felt like you hire the personal assistant, and it is their first day every single day, where they're way too scared to do anything. It's like if you ask your assistant to, like, fix the grocery list, and they're like, "Oh, yeah, yeah, I got that. What kind of butter do you like? Oh, is it okay if I get 2% milk? Oh, okay, cool."
Marques Brownlee 17:52 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 17:52 Um, uh, "Prime or select choice, uh-
Marques Brownlee 17:56 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 17:56 ... steak?" Okay, just, like, it has to ask you every single thing.
Marques Brownlee 17:58 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 17:58 To that point, it's like, I'm just kind of doing this myself.
Marques Brownlee 18:00 It reminds me of my first week ever working here, and I felt like-
Andrew Manganelli 18:03 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 18:03 ... I had to ask you permission for every single small [laughs] thing that I wanted to-
Andrew Manganelli 18:07 So theoretically-
Marques Brownlee 18:08 ... do
Andrew Manganelli 18:08 ... there's a time where you get over that hump, and it knows all your preferences, and then it's really good. And I wanna give them a little credit- Yeah ... 'cause I'd rather that happen- It's better to be more careful ... than it just go full-blown- For sure. [laughs] On the other side, Google, this is a little off topic, but I had my first time where Google, at least I noticed- Took a stack of photos and did the face swap thing without telling me about it.
Marques Brownlee 18:30 Oh, yeah, the Best Take or whatever it is.
Andrew Manganelli 18:30 I always ... I thought Best Take was an option.
Marques Brownlee 18:33 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 18:33 And I took three pictures really quick of Lane and Owen, where one Owen's looking, one's Lane looking, and then it added a third one. Sorry, I took two and then added the third one, and I didn't even notice, but, like, this little, tiny pop-up came that went, like, "This is the Best Take. Uh, it's using two photos." And I was like, "Wait, wait, wait." And then it, that disappeared, and I clicked another little icon that's just, like, a, an image.
Marques Brownlee 18:56 A little badge.
Andrew Manganelli 18:56 A little badge, yeah. And it said it did that, and I was like, "I did not want you to do that."
Marques Brownlee 19:00 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 19:00 I'm fi- I am fine. I was pro that thing if you're picking it, but don't-
Marques Brownlee 19:06 Do it without me asking.
Andrew Manganelli 19:07 Yeah, and now my gallery-
Marques Brownlee 19:08 That's the only thing
Andrew Manganelli 19:08 ... is the fake photo, which was like, it was kind of funny w- of the one of Lane smiling and Owen's head in, like, a blur because he's, like-
Marques Brownlee 19:14 Oh, Jesus
Andrew Manganelli 19:14 ... ripping around, so.
Marques Brownlee 19:16 That's funny- It's weird ... because that's the exact demo that they would've given, like, when they-
Andrew Manganelli 19:19 Yeah, yeah, yeah
Marques Brownlee 19:20 ... unveiled that feature, was you take-
Andrew Manganelli 19:22 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 19:22 ... three photos, and two of them have good faces.
Andrew Manganelli 19:24 Yep, and let me choose.
Marques Brownlee 19:25 And let me choose. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 19:27 Yes.
Marques Brownlee 19:27 He chose for you. Yeah. So anyway, I don't know. I just, I just felt that it was weird, and the Gemini intelligence product of assistance was, like, a big part of this launch, and it's just such a specific thing that is probably gonna work for, like, two CEOs in Silicon Valley and nobody else.
Andrew Manganelli 19:42 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 19:42 And they're gonna think it's a huge success. Yeah. 'Cause it works kinda sometimes. Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 19:47 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 19:47 Yeah, but your point about, your point about the, the Pros just being, like, not that different, like, I was very impressed with the camera quality.
Andrew Manganelli 19:53 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 19:54 I feel like the cameras actually got significantly better this year. They're really good. They are really good cameras. I've taken ... We had the eclipse. We went to Spain, then I went to Ireland for a week, and then I've come back here. And I've, I just left on, uh, 50 megapixel mode, and I- Yeah ... just haven't really had any issues, and it's just been crushing photos all the time, so. Although, every time you take a fif- a 50 megapixel photo now, it has a little thing that's like, "Processing high res image" that lasts like five seconds. It takes a little bit. It takes a little bit. But I usually am just snapping and then putting my phone away. Yeah. And so when I go check it later, it's all, it's all there. That's true. So. That's true. Good cameras.
Andrew Manganelli 20:25 This, uh, you not recommending the Pro One feels like Pixel has done this before-
Marques Brownlee 20:31 Mm
Andrew Manganelli 20:31 ... I think on, like, the 7, the 6 or the 7. Don't ... No one stop. Everybody, no one, we, no one made the meme to audio listeners. Um-
Marques Brownlee 20:40 [clears throat] [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 20:41 But the problem was is back then, both of the phones felt like good deals, where I, I'm pretty sure the Pro at that point cost as much as the regular does now.
Marques Brownlee 20:49 Yeah. Okay.
Andrew Manganelli 20:50 It was like a 690- or like 699 or 599 to 899 difference.
Marques Brownlee 20:55 Yeah, I remember that specifically. $300.
Andrew Manganelli 20:57 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 20:57 My framing was slightly different. I remember back then, my framing, 'cause I got, I got crap for this, but-
Andrew Manganelli 21:01 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 21:02 ... I was saying the, the base Pixel is such a good deal-
Andrew Manganelli 21:06 Mm-hmm
Marques Brownlee 21:07 ... that it makes the also good, also good deal Pro look like not a good deal.
Andrew Manganelli 21:12 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 21:12 Yeah. [laughs] Because they're right next to each other, and you're like, "Oh, why would I get that? This, this base one is an incredible deal." So people heard that, and they were like, "Why are you calling the Pro a bad deal?" I'm not.
Andrew Manganelli 21:20 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 21:20 Yeah. I'm just saying next to the base one, it, that's an amazing deal.
Andrew Manganelli 21:24 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 21:24 Now in 2026, I'm saying this base Pixel is the only one that I could theoretically call a good enough deal, and then the further you go from that base Pixel, the worse it gets. Clearly not-
Andrew Manganelli 21:36 Mm-hmm
Marques Brownlee 21:36 ... a good deal. Yeah. And it's fine, 'cause, you know, phones in 2026 are probably just not a good deal in the first place-
Andrew Manganelli 21:42 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 21:42 ... with this, uh, RAM shortage, but yeah, that's, that's where we're at.
Andrew Manganelli 21:45 I heard a lot of people being like, "At this point, just buy the 10A." Like, the 10A is probably close enough to the 11.
Marques Brownlee 21:51 10. Yeah, or just the t- just get the 10? Or yeah, just a used- Pixel 10 ... 10 or something. I don't know. People need to buy more used tech, by the way. Like, we need to stop always needing to buy the newest-
Andrew Manganelli 22:03 Mm-hmm
Marques Brownlee 22:03 ... newest, newest, especially when they get seven years of software updates.
Andrew Manganelli 22:06 I also find it funny, because if you go to the Google Store right now, I haven't found a single place that just lists it as 899. It always says from 399 with 899 crossed off. Like, they are putting some-
Marques Brownlee 22:17 With trade-in
Andrew Manganelli 22:18 ... wild trade-in deals.
Marques Brownlee 22:19 Oh.
Andrew Manganelli 22:19 And they are just trying to make it seem like-
Marques Brownlee 22:22 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 22:22 ... no, you, you get this-
Marques Brownlee 22:22 Which, to be fair, Adam got the 512 gigabyte Pro for $49 by trading in his- What? [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 22:28 Yeah, he traded in Zuri for it. [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 22:30 [laughs] No, I just traded in the S26 Ultra. Oh. And you get a slightly worse phone.
Andrew Manganelli 22:35 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 22:36 Yeah, the S26 Ultra, isn't that, like, a $1,100? Yeah, but Adam bought, Adam bought the 512 gig version of a Pro phone. Yeah. So that phone is, what, 1,399 or something? I think so, something like that. Oh, Jesus. 12, $1,299?
Andrew Manganelli 22:48 For $49?
Marques Brownlee 22:49 $49. So it came with, like, a pre-order deal where you get it X amount off.
Andrew Manganelli 22:52 And it was cheaper through the Google Fi as well.
Marques Brownlee 22:54 And then with the trade-in ... Yeah, and it was ch- Had I gotten the 256, I think I would've gotten money back. They would've owed me money.
Andrew Manganelli 22:58 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 22:59 Giving you cash on the spot. Huh?
Andrew Manganelli 23:01 Please take our Pixel. [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 23:02 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 23:02 Adam has some bookies ready to break his ankles somewhere.
Marques Brownlee 23:06 And he's-
Andrew Manganelli 23:06 There's, there's ... He's in debt for something that he doesn't know about.
Marques Brownlee 23:10 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 23:10 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 23:10 Well, he's gonna have that Pixel for two weeks, and then he's gonna trade it in for the iPhone Fold, so. No, 'cause Apple doesn't give good trade-in deals on Pixels. They don't care about us. That's true. [laughs] The Pixel, they spit on Pixels, dude.
Andrew Manganelli 23:19 We'll recycle that for you.
Marques Brownlee 23:20 Yeah. Yeah, we'll recycle it for you for free. Um, okay, last thing I wanna say about the Pixel. I just wanna break up ... [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 23:25 The looks?
Marques Brownlee 23:26 N- no, no, no.
Andrew Manganelli 23:27 Oh.
Marques Brownlee 23:27 Camera looks whatever, but the, the Highlight thing. We just, we didn't really-
Andrew Manganelli 23:31 Sorry
Marques Brownlee 23:31 ... talk about it substantially. Did you notice how the flash is way less bright because of Highlight? Yeah, I, I didn't notice that until, like, yesterday b- or the day before. I went to use the flashlight as a torch- Yeah ... uh, in the dark- Flashlight ... 'cause I couldn't see, and I turned it all the way down, 'cause you can adjust the brightness. Yeah. And I was like, "Whoa, this gets really dim." [laughs] And then I turned it back up, and I was like, "Wait." This doesn't get very bright. This doesn't get very bright. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 23:54 Is ... Do you think that's 'cause it's using less-
Marques Brownlee 23:56 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 23:56 ... LEDs or because the diffusion is so strong on it to make it seem more whimsical?
Marques Brownlee 24:01 It's less, less LEDs. Less LEDs.
Andrew Manganelli 24:02 Less LEDs.
Marques Brownlee 24:02 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 24:03 Okay.
Marques Brownlee 24:03 Yeah, 'cause it's now giving a big section of what's behind that diffusion- To the RGB ... to Highlight. Yeah, which doesn't matter. And so now-
Andrew Manganelli 24:09 'Cause, 'cause usually over the flash has this kind of, like, lens looking, um-
Marques Brownlee 24:14 Yeah. Yeah, it's a lens ... but the ... Do you, can I see one of the, with the Highlight? Yeah, usually it's, like, a photo. These don't, these don't have that. It's, like, not- Oh yeah, this has that ... a lens. It's just, like, a super diffused circle. Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 24:23 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 24:24 Yeah. Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 24:25 Huh.
Marques Brownlee 24:25 It's dimmer. It's dimmer, and Highlight's completely and totally useless. So- Except for people who have their phone face down and get lots of phone calls From their favorite There's somebody out there who's like, "Yay, finally, a feature that I'll use." I- But that's- But if I'm getting a phone call, you can see the sc- I never have my phone face down. Yeah. I don't know, man.
David Imel 24:46 I have my phone face down a lot, but I don't get phone calls at all.
Marques Brownlee 24:51 Yep.
David Imel 24:51 Like, if I get a phone call-
Marques Brownlee 24:51 I was gonna say-
David Imel 24:51 ... it's a spam call. So, like-
Marques Brownlee 24:53 Oh, yeah
Andrew Manganelli 24:53 My pitch to Marques for an intro skit for this review was, um, him, like, setting up his mom as, like, the color green or whatever-
Marques Brownlee 25:03 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 25:03 ... so that he never misses her calls whenever he's working, and it's just him working in all these scenarios, and it's never blinking, never blinking, and then it finally lights up, and he's like, "Oh, my mom's calling." And he picks up, and she goes, "I've been texting you for three hours."
Marques Brownlee 25:14 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 25:14 "Where are you? I need-"
Marques Brownlee 25:15 Why have you not answered? Yeah. The only time I have my phone face down is when I'm, like, getting dinner or a drink with a friend, and it's, like, a sign of respect to put your phone face down. Yeah. It's performative.
David Imel 25:24 That's a pretty good-
Marques Brownlee 25:24 It's performative.
David Imel 25:25 You should put it somewhere where-
Marques Brownlee 25:26 I take it out of my pocket, and I put it face down on the table.
Andrew Manganelli 25:28 Literally.
Marques Brownlee 25:29 I'm not using my phone. It's not different than keeping it in your pocket. It's, it's performative, yeah. It's funny. So anyway, that's all I wanted to say.
Andrew Manganelli 25:36 Well-
Marques Brownlee 25:36 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 25:37 ... there was a teardown, and they found that all of the LEDs inside it are RGB.
Marques Brownlee 25:42 It should-
Andrew Manganelli 25:43 So why-
Marques Brownlee 25:44 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 25:44 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 25:44 So that's, that was the thing that we were talking about on the pod in Spain- Yeah ... which is that red isn't one of the colors, which seems like it should be. And it could be. And it absolutely could be. Yeah. They just didn't make it one of the colors. Yeah. Well- So strange ... somebody Vibe Coded, like, a, uh, like, a Highlight app that makes it- Yeah ... light up for notifications and stuff. They let you choose whatever color you want- Mm-hmm ... including red, so I don't know why Google is so against red. Yeah. But they just hate red. This is one of those things where, like, th- this is, like, a multi, multi-trillion dollar company, and they've, they've announced this new feature, and some- and sometimes there's, like, a... Like, in cars, this happens, where you'll be like, oh, there's a tuner community out there, who's like, "Oh, we have different spring rates and, and different accessories for the car to make it better." And you're like, what, what do you think you know that BMW doesn't know? Like, what are you- Yeah ... are you really gonna make a car better than the manufacturer? And you're like, yeah, probably not, but it's just the way we like it. But then we get to this phone, and we're like, "Yeah, we're gonna make it way better than Google ever thought-" [laughs] "... to make it," because somehow they completely missed, like, 75% of the functionality that this could have had. Overnight, by the way. Like- Yeah ... someone Vibe Coded [laughs] this, and I'm like- In a day ... if they Vibe Coded it, why couldn't Google just add, like, a... And now they're like, "We're thinking about adding functionality for text messages and Google messages." And I'm like- Which is- ... what? Knowing the way that Google Works- What? ... somebody at Google said that, and then s- they said it in a way that, hopefully, it would get back to the engineering team that is supposed to make that happen. Yeah. 'Cause they don't even talk.
Andrew Manganelli 27:14 Yeah, [laughs] they don't even know.
Marques Brownlee 27:15 They don't even talk to each other. [laughs] They don't even know who that guy is.
Andrew Manganelli 27:18 Yeah. They're like, who are you?
Marques Brownlee 27:18 And so that team's gonna see it, and they'll be like, "Oh, I should make this work with Google Messages? Okay." Then there's 30 layer- layers of red tape to make that work. And then they'll have to approve it, and then they'll have...
Andrew Manganelli 27:26 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 27:26 And there's just, like, another building of people who are like, "What's Google Messages?" [laughs] "We... I thought we had seven other messaging-" I thought we used Hangouts. Yeah. Yeah. And that app-
Andrew Manganelli 27:33 That could've just changed the colors. It could do different apps doing different things.
Marques Brownlee 27:38 Animations.
Andrew Manganelli 27:38 Yeah, like-
Marques Brownlee 27:38 Speed
Andrew Manganelli 27:38 ... it could do everything. To be fair, it had to be, like, sideloaded, and I thought I read that every time you rebooted your phone, you had to reboot the app or something.
Marques Brownlee 27:45 You did.
Andrew Manganelli 27:45 It seemed very complicated.
David Imel 27:47 If you're not rooted, with Sh- Shizuku, I think it's called, is that app that lets you-
Marques Brownlee 27:50 Yeah
David Imel 27:50 ... install apps like these.
Marques Brownlee 27:52 It's annoying and difficult, for sure.
David Imel 27:53 It took me, like, an hour and a half. I kept walking over to Andrew, like, "Okay, text me now."
Andrew Manganelli 27:56 [laughs] Yeah.
David Imel 27:57 And I would put the phone down on his desk-
Andrew Manganelli 27:58 Okay
David Imel 27:58 ... and he would text me, and it would vibrate, and nothing would happen.
Andrew Manganelli 28:00 It never worked.
David Imel 28:00 And I'd be like, "Damn it." [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 28:02 But it got to work eventually.
Andrew Manganelli 28:03 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 28:03 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 28:03 But it j- it was more, to us, proof that all of the things could have happened on this phone.
Marques Brownlee 28:09 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 28:09 Especially when you are the person who makes the phone and could add, like, a couple colors.
Marques Brownlee 28:11 Well, and it's like, if Google was not a multi-trillion dollar company, they could've seen this backlash, and then, like, made it work within a day or two. And they could-
Andrew Manganelli 28:19 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 28:19 ... they could've had really good community-
Andrew Manganelli 28:21 Oh, that'd be great PR to do that, you're right
Marques Brownlee 28:22 It would've been amazing PR, to be like, "You guys are right. We heard you. We're releasing an update next week that has all this functionality." Highlight, Highlight feels like a true did they even test this? They did not.
Andrew Manganelli 28:33 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 28:34 Like, usually, when companies are launching big features, they have internal focus groups, they have all sorts of testing that they do ahead of time with, like, groups inside the company to make sure they're not missing anything- Yeah ... and it'll be used the way they think customers will use it. This didn't get that. Yeah. Clearly. Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 28:48 I don't even wanna blame engineers, because it seems so obvious that I have to assume one engineer got the job of, like, "Oh, I'm gonna make the defaults for these five colors. Like, someone else must be working on the color wheel." Like, "My job must just be-"
Marques Brownlee 29:00 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 29:01 ... "the favorites or the defaults. Someone else has the color wheel."
Marques Brownlee 29:03 You know what's crazy? Can't wait to see the finished feature.
Andrew Manganelli 29:05 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 29:05 At our, uh, at our hands-on event, they had a giant Pixel camera bar on the wall, and you could- Yeah ... hit a big button, and it would make Highlight glow with, like, the Gemini colors. And I'm like, the prop designer did a lot of work. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 29:16 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 29:17 They got a good job. Marketing team saw the pitch and was like, "Oh, yeah, we'll make this-" [laughs] Yeah ... "we'll make this look cool."
David Imel 29:23 Just, did we ever get any clarity into, like, the color wheel filter?
Andrew Manganelli 29:26 No, it wasn't that. It's, it's a circle of LED lights, and each of those LEDs are RGB.
Marques Brownlee 29:31 Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 29:33 It's not the color wheel filter.
Marques Brownlee 29:34 Yeah, it's not. The color wheel. Wheel.
Andrew Manganelli 29:36 You got me. Thank you, everyone.
Marques Brownlee 29:38 You're welcome.
Andrew Manganelli 29:38 Um, but, and-
David Imel 29:39 You wanna know my conspiracy theory for this?
Marques Brownlee 29:41 What?
David Imel 29:41 I think they're saving it for a Pixel drop.
Andrew Manganelli 29:43 Do they... You mean they're gonna do DLC?
Marques Brownlee 29:45 A feature? Yeah, DLC.
David Imel 29:46 To be like, "Oh, look at this."
Andrew Manganelli 29:48 Yeah.
David Imel 29:48 And a whole new thing your phone can do in two months, like, in December.
Marques Brownlee 29:51 I-
Andrew Manganelli 29:53 It's called red.
Marques Brownlee 29:53 It's called red. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 29:54 [laughs] Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 29:55 I think, I think they should've, and this is maybe... I'm not the expert. I don't work for Google, but I think they should've made this work for messages, phone calls, a whole bunch of other apps. You should have a bunch of colors and a bunch of customization. And then in Pix- in future drops, you can hear what other people would like to be able to do with it that's more creative, that wouldn't obviously be stuff-
Andrew Manganelli 30:14 Bro
Marques Brownlee 30:14 ... that we think of, and then add that later. In the Nexus days, we could do whatever the hell we wanted with the- I know. The glowing trackball from, what, the, literally the first Nexus phone. The S, the, the S, the very first [laughs] Nexus phone. So good. That was so good.
Andrew Manganelli 30:27 I think what makes this more frustrating is- Google themselves kind of did that weird ... Was it in IO where they showed a bunch of, like, clips, and there was the guy in the mirror holding his Pixel, and it... We all thought Pixel Glow was gonna be around the camera bar.
Marques Brownlee 30:40 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 30:40 So we were all like, "That's gonna be so nuts," and then that was our expectation.
Marques Brownlee 30:45 That's-
Andrew Manganelli 30:45 Now, we went down to just little dot-
Marques Brownlee 30:46 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 30:46 ... and we were like, "Okay, it's still a notification LED. It can be sick." And then they gave us a five-color call only-
Marques Brownlee 30:52 And that's my thing, is that-
Andrew Manganelli 30:53 ... circle
Marques Brownlee 30:53 ... the Pixel Glow thing has been... It was leaked, like, six months early. They had so much time- They had months ... to add any func- function functionality to this. And for six months, they were like, "Should we add- A- ... green?"
Andrew Manganelli 31:04 Mm.
Marques Brownlee 31:05 What if you- "How about, hmm, how about yellow?" What if-
Andrew Manganelli 31:07 What's your favorite color? White. [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 31:09 What if you're talking to Gemini without looking at your screen?
Andrew Manganelli 31:12 That's all they care about.
Marques Brownlee 31:13 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 31:13 You hit the nail on the head. They don't want LED notifications.
Marques Brownlee 31:16 But nobody does that.
Andrew Manganelli 31:17 That's what we want. They want Gemini.
Marques Brownlee 31:18 Like, I sometimes use Gemini Voice Mode, but I like to see what it says on the screen while I'm using it. Maybe this is the proxy for exactly how Google thinks about the Pixel, which is it's just a vessel for Gemini. And if you, if you put this phone across the room face up and you say, "Hey, G," then you see the f- the light turn on, and you're like, "All right, I'm talking to it," and then it's responding, but they must believe that people are talking to Gemini so often that when it's face down, they still wanna make sure it's hearing them, so they a- add a little light on the back so that we can make sure everyone knows, "Okay, I'm talking to Gemini, and it's face down now." That's the thing that they think they should care about. It's at least the user behavior they want. Yeah. I've thought a lot about, like, the ... They're kind of getting back to their whole ambient computing thing with, like, Google Home, and now the AI is just a vessel to make the ambient computing work because they r- they've released the new smart speaker and everything. Mm-hmm. And they're trying to put more surfaces in your life that you can interact with Gemini through. Mm-hmm. So it makes sense to have your phone be one of those surfaces and have it be able, you be able to actually see when you're interacting with Gemini all the time. It's just that I just don't think that that's a user interaction that people do naturally.
Andrew Manganelli 32:24 It's-
Marques Brownlee 32:24 My phone is so rarely face down like this. And if your phone, like- Like when I- ... lights up when you say, "Hey, G" on the screen, that's not a problem. Like, I don't- Yeah ... I don't see why- [laughs] Why would you have it face down? I don't know.
Speaker 32:35 It's like maybe say if you say, "Hey, G" at your house, you can tell if you're speaking to your phone or your, your, uh-
Marques Brownlee 32:41 Yeah, but your phone would light up anyway-
Speaker 32:42 ... Apple AirTag or something anyways
Marques Brownlee 32:42 ... if you did that.
Speaker 32:43 Yeah. I sort of understand, like, the narrative point of, like, giving your phone a thing that's, like, just for Gemini. Like, it makes a statement that, like, Gemini is this thing-
Marques Brownlee 32:52 That they care.
Speaker 32:53 No, that, and more than that-
Marques Brownlee 32:54 About your Apple
Speaker 32:55 ... it's like, it's like, it's this standalone thing that, like you say, is ambient. It's always there, and it will appear in this spot. Like, this is its ... It's like a, it's a narrative storytelling thing. I think it's stupid, but-
Marques Brownlee 33:05 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 33:05 I will say-
Speaker 33:05 I, I think I, I think I get it. I don't know.
Andrew Manganelli 33:07 I don't mind that it can be that, um, signal for Gemini if your phone is down. I, I have my phone down all the time. That's why I want this to be a notification dot. The thing is, is don't ship it as the thing you all expect the people to use it for and then half-ass the rest of it. Ship a, a good thing that most people will use, and then there's the option of the Gemini thing. I think more people use Gemini if they're all in the customizations of Highlight, of I can make my mom text message this color, and I can make, uh, any important people from work calling this color. If you can do all that customization-
Marques Brownlee 33:39 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 33:39 ... then you'll see the Gemini tab and what it can do face down, and you're probably more likely to actually use the feature.
Marques Brownlee 33:45 Yeah. Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 33:46 Instead, they're forcing it down our throats and pretending the throw is a bone that's half chewed.
Marques Brownlee 33:51 This is a question that I wanna ask the Google engineers. Of all the face-down Pixels in the world, do you think more people get text messages- [laughs] Of all the face-down Pixels ... or use Gemini?
Speaker 34:02 Oof.
Marques Brownlee 34:02 Oof. And I know what they want it to be, but what do you really- [laughs] Yeah, yeah ... what do you really think? They're getting texts from Gemini because Gemini's in Google Messages now. I'm sure.
Andrew Manganelli 34:10 I feel like the only way they, the engineers or the PMs were able to get this feature is by tying it to Gemini in some way. You have to get the feature-
Marques Brownlee 34:17 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 34:17 ... approved by the higher-ups-
Speaker 34:19 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 34:19 ... which means it has to be a Gemini feature first.
Marques Brownlee 34:22 That's probably true. Yeah, because when, uh, when Microsoft made them dance or whatever, they-
Andrew Manganelli 34:28 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 34:29 Like, they went out, and they were like, "Oh, we're an AI first company now. We're..."
Andrew Manganelli 34:33 Mm.
Marques Brownlee 34:33 They literally restructured Android around Gemini. So I bet you they have some sort of benchmark where they have to connect it to Gemini. Every new feature probably has to be connected to Gemini in some way. Which is why the GPU of Tensor never gets better. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 34:46 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 34:46 'Cause it doesn't help Gemini at all, and there are still 20,000 leagues under- Yeah, but their TPUs got better. Their TPUs got better, and that's why Gemini is faster, and all the AI stuff is doing better. Yeah. But have you seen the benchmark results? Yeah, it's bad. Oh, my God. And I will say, I will say, I, I do wanna note that I was... I, I kind of take back part of what I said on our Eclipse, uh, week episode, where I was like- What'd you say? I don't take it back.
Andrew Manganelli 35:09 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 35:09 I... Look, I said what I said. I still think that Google's m-
Andrew Manganelli 35:13 Why are you booing me? I'm right.
Marques Brownlee 35:14 [laughs] I still think that Google's mentality is we're focused on AI. We're focused on Gemini. We're, we're not focusing on the fastest single thread CPU speed for your Genshin Impact, right? Mm-hmm. That's not what they're benchmarking it against. They're not making a OnePlus phone. But [laughs] when I was, when I was reviewing this phone, there was some stuttering, and I was like, "Oh." Like, in Google Maps, Google Maps would kind of, like, lag- Mm ... and sometimes stutter, and I was like-
Andrew Manganelli 35:40 Just scrolling
Marques Brownlee 35:41 ... "I haven't experienced this on a phone in a while." On a new phone. On a new phone. On a brand new $1,000 phone. Yeah. Yeah. So it wasn't, like, a lot, but it was enough where I was like, "Oh, I would not... This would not happen on a regular phone." Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 35:55 So I think what you're saying is Tensor can't handle more than five colors in Highlight?
Marques Brownlee 35:59 That's probably the, that's probably the reason.
Andrew Manganelli 36:00 The GPU's not good enough.
Marques Brownlee 36:01 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 36:01 That's, that's why.
Marques Brownlee 36:02 GPU. AI, AIs don't know how to tell a strawberry. There's no way that they know what the color red is. You know what I mean? Yeah, the GPU is- So ... is a crying shame on Tensor. Well, it'll play Genshin Impact. You know what's not a crying shame? You'll be fine. What? Well, actually, TBD.
Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra Leaks
Marques Brownlee 36:17 [laughs] We got the S27 Ultra leaks, the design specifically. This is so early. Yeah, and I don't know.
Andrew Manganelli 36:23 I kind of love it.
Marques Brownlee 36:23 People are mostly just commentating on the fact that it's a camera plateau now instead of a camera bar.
Andrew Manganelli 36:29 Mm-hmm.
Marques Brownlee 36:29 Actually, honestly, the Ultra didn't have a bar at all. It was just, like, the rings sticking out the back.
Andrew Manganelli 36:33 Yes.
Marques Brownlee 36:33 Yes. And then, like, the little plateau around each ring. Now it's just a big camera mesa, which, you know. [laughs] Mesa.
Andrew Manganelli 36:38 I was, I was literally about to search a synonym for plateau.
Marques Brownlee 36:42 [laughs] Yeah. It's a big camera mesa. I like mesa. Kind of like the iPhone.
Andrew Manganelli 36:44 Ah, they'll name it space something, I feel like.
Marques Brownlee 36:46 The Space Mesa. Space Zoom.
Andrew Manganelli 36:48 Space Mesa.
Marques Brownlee 36:48 Space Zoom Mesa.
Andrew Manganelli 36:49 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 36:51 Star, stargazing. I'm just excited that-
Andrew Manganelli 36:53 This series won't look exactly the same as the last-
Speaker 36:56 Same
Andrew Manganelli 36:56 ... five years. This thing has not changed, what feels like, in forever.
Speaker 37:01 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 37:01 So just the fact that it's different, I'm like, "Whoa, cool."
Speaker 37:04 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 37:04 I can maybe be excited.
Speaker 37:05 I think that's why.
Andrew Manganelli 37:06 Yeah.
Speaker 37:06 I think that's why. They're like, "Yeah, let's change the look just a little bit so we can say we changed the look just a little bit."
Marques Brownlee 37:10 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 37:11 I guess. So, camera plat- ... So for audio listeners, big old camera plateau on the top
Speaker 37:16 Mesa
Andrew Manganelli 37:16 ... mesa. Now instead of three cameras, um, down the left side, we have two cameras left-aligned, and then it almost looks like to the right of it, it looks like the camera bar from the iPhone X. Um, right? Like, two cameras in one singular pill with a flash in between. Potentially camera and-
Speaker 37:33 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 37:33 ... sensor is what we're saying with this.
Marques Brownlee 37:34 It kinda looks like a time-of-flight sensor.
Andrew Manganelli 37:36 A time-of-flight sensor-
Marques Brownlee 37:37 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 37:37 ... flash, uh, camera. And then the right half of the plateau, completely bare.
Speaker 37:43 Weird.
Andrew Manganelli 37:43 I don't know why, but I kinda dig it.
Marques Brownlee 37:45 Weird, uh, weirdly bare. Uh-
Speaker 37:47 Weirdly bare.
Marques Brownlee 37:48 Yeah. It's-
Speaker 37:48 It's because they don't want it to wobble anymore. The wobble was crazy.
Marques Brownlee 37:51 That's actually valid. But-
Andrew Manganelli 37:52 That's also valid
Marques Brownlee 37:53 ... although if, if this lens sticks out far enough, it will still wobble.
Andrew Manganelli 37:56 Oh, yeah, true.
Speaker 37:57 Yeah, but-
Marques Brownlee 37:57 That is true
Speaker 37:58 ... we can't tell that yet.
Marques Brownlee 37:58 Not as much.
Andrew Manganelli 37:59 True.
Speaker 37:59 It's definitely sticking out.
Andrew Manganelli 38:00 [laughs]
Speaker 38:01 It's definitely gonna wobble, but-
Marques Brownlee 38:02 Maybe it'll be like the iPhone Air and the whole, the whole phone will be in the right side of the mesa.
Andrew Manganelli 38:06 Uh, you have to assume they're stacking something in there. Like-
Marques Brownlee 38:10 Yeah. There's probably one telephoto that folds over sideways-
Speaker 38:15 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 38:15 ... which goes behind the rest of the mesa. There's probably, I don't know, some GPU up there [laughs]
Speaker 38:21 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 38:21 ... which the Tensor doesn't have.
Andrew Manganelli 38:22 I, I like it better than the three, three vertical cameras.
Marques Brownlee 38:27 I think it'll ... Yeah. No, I don't mind it. There's a lot of haters 'cause it's, "Oh, the iPhone. iPhone bad, Android good." But I honestly don't mind this.
Andrew Manganelli 38:33 I don't get why everyone credits the iPhone for the plateau.
Marques Brownlee 38:35 Yeah, well the plateau is-
Andrew Manganelli 38:35 Xiaomi had it way longer
Marques Brownlee 38:36 ... that's actually what I was gonna say.
Andrew Manganelli 38:37 And did a million things with it.
Speaker 38:38 It looks exactly like a Xiaomi phone.
Andrew Manganelli 38:39 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 38:39 But now that the iPhone has it, that's the way people react to it.
Speaker 38:42 That's true.
Marques Brownlee 38:42 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 38:43 I think the people who are mad comparing it to the iPhone probably aren't the actual iPh- ... The iPhone people who, who would call this iPhone-centered don't give a [beep] [laughs] about this phone.
Marques Brownlee 38:52 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 38:52 So it's just-
Marques Brownlee 38:53 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 38:53 ... Android people hating iPhone so much that they're, they themselves are comparing it to an iPhone.
Marques Brownlee 38:57 Yeah. I actually like camera mesas-
Andrew Manganelli 38:58 It's true
Marques Brownlee 38:59 ... slash visors because, I've said it before, that's where I, like, rest my finger-
Speaker 39:02 Yeah. Me too
Marques Brownlee 39:03 ... on the back of the phone. It's a little thing. It's a subtle thing.
Speaker 39:05 Do you wanna call it the butte? Because a butte is a flat-topped hill similar to a mesa-
Andrew Manganelli 39:10 I know
Speaker 39:10 ... but typically smaller and taller than it is wide.
Marques Brownlee 39:13 No. I think a butte is ... Yeah, I think this is a mesa more than a butte.
Speaker 39:17 Yeah, I guess you're right.
Marques Brownlee 39:18 Yeah.
Speaker 39:18 This maybe, maybe this is a mesa-
Andrew Manganelli 39:20 Yeah
Speaker 39:20 ... on the Pixel 11 What are you, what are you talking about-
Andrew Manganelli 39:21 This is a butte
Speaker 39:22 ... with the Xiaomi being what?
Marques Brownlee 39:25 The 11T?
Speaker 39:26 The 11-
Andrew Manganelli 39:27 There's been, like, a Xiaomi ... It was, it was it Xiaomi or Huawei? Did one with a whole-ass screen on the back.
Marques Brownlee 39:32 That was a Xiao-
Andrew Manganelli 39:33 And then there was-
Marques Brownlee 39:33 The Xiaomi, uh, something Ultra.
Andrew Manganelli 39:34 There was a Poco Phone-
Speaker 39:36 That was this, this-
Andrew Manganelli 39:36 ... that we, that had a giant, like, full width-wise, like, plateau.
Speaker 39:40 I know, but that came out after the iPhone.
Andrew Manganelli 39:42 No, it didn't.
Speaker 39:42 The 17 Pro came out after the iPhone, I remember.
Marques Brownlee 39:45 The Xiaomi 11T Ultra-
Andrew Manganelli 39:46 No, you're thinking-
Marques Brownlee 39:46 ... is the one that-
Andrew Manganelli 39:47 There are ones from Fargo.
Marques Brownlee 39:50 Fargo.
Andrew Manganelli 39:51 My Little iPhone Boy.
Marques Brownlee 39:52 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 39:53 Back in my day.
Marques Brownlee 39:54 Xiaomi ... Look up the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra.
Speaker 39:56 What's the- Yeah, no, I, I see
Marques Brownlee 39:57 ... 11T Ultra.
Speaker 39:58 You're right. I was ... I take it all back.
Marques Brownlee 39:59 [laughs]
Speaker 40:00 That is a mesa.
Andrew Manganelli 40:01 What, what was the Among Us Poco Phone?
Marques Brownlee 40:03 Oh.
Speaker 40:04 That was a long time ago.
Marques Brownlee 40:04 Yeah, that was a long time. That was a long time ago. Yeah. Damn, the 11T Ultra do be iPhone. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs]
Speaker 40:10 [laughs] Sure.
Andrew Manganelli 40:13 Damn, they stole it from Apple three years before Apple did.
Marques Brownlee 40:15 [laughs] You know what I, you know what I wonder sometimes? Whatever happened to the camera, the selfie camera cutouts being moved to under the display? Remember that?
Speaker 40:25 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 40:25 Remember there was a time where we all were like-
Speaker 40:26 That's true
Marques Brownlee 40:27 ... "It's eventually gonna go to zero, and it's gonna be invisible behind the screen."
Speaker 40:30 Well, they do that on the fold, on the, the Samsung Fold.
Andrew Manganelli 40:32 I was gonna say, that was the last fold, wasn't it?
Marques Brownlee 40:33 They did, and then they stopped and went back to a hole-punch cutout.
Speaker 40:36 They did?
Marques Brownlee 40:36 Yeah.
Speaker 40:36 I mean, it was probably just too hazy.
Marques Brownlee 40:38 And I thought that-
Speaker 40:39 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 40:39 ... they committed to it because they thought they had a path to, like, a good selfie camera.
Speaker 40:43 Apparently not.
Marques Brownlee 40:44 But, uh, you just don't see that anymore.
Speaker 40:46 Maybe they just realized people don't care.
Marques Brownlee 40:48 I think it's true.
Andrew Manganelli 40:48 I'm similar to the bezel video you made. I just don't ... The screen-to-body ratio died. Like, no one cares about that anymore.
Speaker 40:56 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 40:56 I think we're fine-
Speaker 40:57 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 40:57 ... with the little dot in it. Um, yeah.
Speaker 40:59 I think also selfie cameras became way more important, so taking the hit on-
Marques Brownlee 41:04 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 41:04 Oh, yeah
Speaker 41:04 ... the screen-less just-
Marques Brownlee 41:05 That's true
Speaker 41:05 ... you know?
Marques Brownlee 41:06 I think that selfie cameras have been important for a long time, and I think they realized that nobody was willing to take that massive hit to get the under-screen selfie camera, and then nobody was willing to, like, put in the work to make it a really, really good under-screen selfie camera-
Speaker 41:20 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 41:20 ... because nobody was making them anymore.
Speaker 41:21 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 41:22 So we were all just like, "Okay, there's never any useful UI up in the top or in the corner." They used to all be in the corner.
Speaker 41:27 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 41:27 Now they're in the top middle.
Speaker 41:28 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 41:29 And we're just, like, fine with the hole-punch cutout.
Speaker 41:30 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 41:31 I guess that's the way it is.
Speaker 41:31 By the way, something else that the Pixel 11 Pro does very well is the selfie camera's really good.
Marques Brownlee 41:35 Yeah.
Speaker 41:35 It's like, I think it's the same one from last year, but it's really good.
Andrew Manganelli 41:37 Yeah, it is really good.
Speaker 41:38 It's really good.
Marques Brownlee 41:39 Um, yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 41:40 The 5X lens, too, is fire.
Marques Brownlee 41:42 The 5X lens is way better-
Andrew Manganelli 41:43 It's really good
Marques Brownlee 41:43 ... than it was last year. Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 41:44 Yeah. It is really good.
Marques Brownlee 41:45 Am I gonna keep using the Pixel?
Speaker 41:47 Join me.
Marques Brownlee 41:47 This is what happens to me every year.
Speaker 41:49 I know. Me too.
Marques Brownlee 41:49 I use it for, like, three months, then I'm like, "I think I'm a, I'm a full-time Pixeler."
Speaker 41:53 You just go back to the OnePlus 15 Pro.
Marques Brownlee 41:53 And then I'll, I'll go back to the OnePlus 15 Pro. [laughs]
Speaker 41:55 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 41:55 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 41:55 Oh, right, phones can be fast.
Andrew Manganelli 41:57 [laughs]
Speaker 41:58 [laughs] Jeez.
Andrew Manganelli 41:58 Listen, if you just, like, accept that this cage is golden, it's a beautiful life.
Speaker 42:03 Well, now that OnePlus is practically dead everywhere but India-
Marques Brownlee 42:06 Yeah
Speaker 42:06 ... I feel like the OnePlus 15 is gonna be the last, like, true flagship OnePlus phone that you're gonna be able to have.
Marques Brownlee 42:12 I think I'm gonna end up with the S27 Ultra.
Speaker 42:14 I'm gonna bury you with the OnePlus 15.
Andrew Manganelli 42:16 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 42:17 [laughs] I feel like- Is that a threat? [laughs] ... that's the phone I've used the most in the past, like, three years probably.
Speaker 42:22 Damn.
Marques Brownlee 42:23 Wow. Yeah.
Speaker 42:23 That's crazy.
Marques Brownlee 42:25 Anyway.
Speaker 42:25 Anyway.
Marques Brownlee 42:27 All right.
Speaker 42:27 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 42:28 We should take a quick break.
Speaker 42:30 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 42:30 We have way more brand-new tech to talk about 'cause it's that time of year.
Speaker 42:33 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 42:33 But before we take that break, trivia time. There we go. [singing]
Speaker 42:40 All right. I had a whole question about where the, uh, where the, the front-facing camera was on Pixel phones. Uh, but all this talk about a company making a feature, AKA a highlight, that they wanted users to use in a certain way, and users didn't use it that way-
Marques Brownlee 42:58 Mm-hmm
Speaker 42:58 ... and they didn't adapt-
Andrew Manganelli 42:59 Mm-hmm
Speaker 42:59 ... uh, made me wanna pivot to one of my favorite trivia facts ever about one of the greatest products ever made, WD-40.
Andrew Manganelli 43:08 Agree
Marques Brownlee 43:09 What was it originally?
Andrew Manganelli 43:09 No, hard agree.
Marques Brownlee 43:10 Okay. And, uh- Hope you know this ... and, and real WD-40 fans may know that while it is popularly used as an industrial lubricant, it was not originally developed as an industrial lubricant. So my question to my three Waveform hosts today, what does the WD in WD-40 stand for?
Andrew Manganelli 43:30 Oh, why just, why couldn't it just be what was it developed for?
Marques Brownlee 43:33 Because that's what it was developed for. Wumbo. Wumbo Dumbo.
Andrew Manganelli 43:37 Wumbo.
Marques Brownlee 43:37 That's it. David. Wumbo Dumbo 40.
Andrew Manganelli 43:40 I have a guess.
Marques Brownlee 43:41 I weirdly only knew the first half of this trivia fact. What was the first- I knew that WD-40 wasn't originally just-
Andrew Manganelli 43:48 Huh
Marques Brownlee 43:48 ... supposed to be a lubricant, but I don't know the other half, which is what was it supposed to be? [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 43:53 I know what it's, I know what it's supposed to be. I just don't think I know what that stands for.
Marques Brownlee 43:57 If you know what it's supposed to be-
Andrew Manganelli 43:58 I think I have a guess. Okay
Marques Brownlee 43:59 ... it should, you sh- you, you probably can arrive at the WD. Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 44:05 I have a guess.
Marques Brownlee 44:06 Wumbo. All right. Well, answers will be at the end-
Andrew Manganelli 44:09 Wumbo Dumba [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 44:09 ... of the show, like usual. We'll be right back. [upbeat music]

Marques Brownlee 44:20 Support for the show comes from Granola. Nobody likes having meetings about meetings. What we need is a tool designed to make meetings so good we never need to follow up. Enter Granola. Granola is an AI-powered notepad built for the way real people actually meet. Here's how it works. You can take rough notes like you normally would, and in the background, Granola securely transcribes the meeting. Then it turns everything into clean, structured, actually useful notes when the meeting ends, and then there's no cumbersome setup either. Granola works through your device's audio, which means it integrates seamlessly into the video conferencing tools you already use. It's just like your normal meeting with superpowers. So now you get to actually listen instead of trying to catch every single important word. You can still walk away knowing exactly what was decided, who's doing what, and what comes next. If meetings are eating up your day, Granola is a no-brainer. You can try it totally free. Just head to granola.ai/waveform. That's granola.ai/waveform to get your time back. Marques Brownlee 45:17 Support for the show comes from Airbnb. You know you don't need an excuse to travel. Travel is a joy in and of itself, and it should be immersive, not just about the tourist landmarks. It's about getting to know the people and the culture, and it's about seeing the world through fresh eyes. Airbnb really is the perfect way to do that. I've used Airbnb to book a lot of stays all over the world.
Andrew Manganelli 45:35 You actually already mentioned you like to book with Airbnb for your Ultimate teams-
Marques Brownlee 45:39 Yep
Andrew Manganelli 45:39 ... 'cause you have a lot of players travel all over. Um, by the way, congrats on second at Worlds.
Marques Brownlee 45:44 Thank you.
Andrew Manganelli 45:45 I know maybe not first, but I think we can confirm a podium finish by staying with Airbnb.
Marques Brownlee 45:51 Can't rule it out.
Andrew Manganelli 45:51 Can't rule it out. Yeah. I like to book through Airbnb at, like, national parks 'cause when you're traveling and want to spend all this time outside, staying in, like, a cookie cutter hotel doesn't really fit the vibe.
Marques Brownlee 46:03 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 46:03 Um, one of my favorite places outside of Yosemite, it was perfect. We just spent all day hiking. There was, like, this cool patio in the backyard, and it's, like, one of the only times I've just sat and looked at the Milky Way-
Marques Brownlee 46:13 Nice
Andrew Manganelli 46:13 ... all night. You do not get that on the East Coast.
Marques Brownlee 46:16 For sure. When you explore new cultures and meet new people, you discover new things about yourself, and Airbnb is the best way to book the perfect stay
Viewflation
Marques Brownlee 46:23 for your next big adventure. All right, welcome back. Uh, I just wanted to ask you guys a question real quick. Yep. I know that when I was out, you guys, uh, you guys covered the new YouTube views counting metric. We did.
Andrew Manganelli 46:35 Oh, okay.
Marques Brownlee 46:36 Uh, Viewflation, as I've-
Andrew Manganelli 46:37 Mm-hmm
Marques Brownlee 46:37 ... I've been calling it in the office. Yeah. Well, we have published a video since the beginning of Viewflation, so I'm curious what you guys think the difference is in engaged views versus publicly counted views on our newest video on the bezel-less concept phone. The public view counter is 2.391 million views. What is the amount of engaged views? 20 per- 20% difference? Like 80-
Andrew Manganelli 47:03 1.8
Marques Brownlee 47:04 ... 80% of that?
Andrew Manganelli 47:05 Yeah, I'm going 1.8.
Marques Brownlee 47:05 1.8? I saw s- I think Harper posted this at, like, one million. Were you paying attention? And it wasn't, it wasn't a, a big difference, so I don't know what it would be. Like 100,000 view difference. I don't think it's very much, but I have insider knowledge. Wow.
Andrew Manganelli 47:21 I was gonna say, that's cheating. I saw that, too. Just pretend you didn't.
Marques Brownlee 47:23 Oh. Yeah, but there's no-
Andrew Manganelli 47:23 Make a guess.
Marques Brownlee 47:24 Wait, what?
Andrew Manganelli 47:24 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 47:25 I don't lie to our audience like all of you guys do. Any guesses over there?
Andrew Manganelli 47:28 Uh, what is an engaged view? It's like 20 seconds.
Marques Brownlee 47:31 An engaged view is the original- Yeah, they brought that-
Andrew Manganelli 47:33 No, I know it's the original counting method
Marques Brownlee 47:34 ... uh, method. There's no metric. So there is no default. Or, okay. It's basically YouTube determined that you are a real person who watched it for more than a split second and actually watched the video. More than a frame. Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 47:44 I always in my head felt like it was, like, eight or nine seconds, but I don't know why. It's not-
Marques Brownlee 47:47 It used to be seven a long time ago, I think, unless I'm lying to you.
Andrew Manganelli 47:51 YouTube will always say there was never any specific number-
Marques Brownlee 47:54 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 47:54 ... AKA we just aren't telling you.
Marques Brownlee 47:55 I think that video probably has, like, 1.6 million- Engaged views ... engaged views. Okay, so the, again, the actual public counted views is 2.391 million. The actual engaged views is 2.354 million. Oh my God.
Andrew Manganelli 48:15 Whoa.
Marques Brownlee 48:15 So it only added about 50,000 views to the view counter-
Andrew Manganelli 48:19 Wow
Marques Brownlee 48:19 ... on a 2.3 million view video. Interesting. So hardly a fraction of what we thought, at least in this one case. We have a very small-
Andrew Manganelli 48:26 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 48:26 ... sample size of one single video, but- Wait, I have another question. Yeah. What, so what is your impression to click rate? Um, my click-through rate is 8%. Oh. Which is just a ratio of impressions to clicks. So watching. So 22 million impressions and- Okay. Yeah. So that's normal- Interesting ... for this, this age of a video, two days old. Hmm. But yeah. Interesting. I think we'll see different types of videos have-
Andrew Manganelli 48:52 Mm-hmm
Marques Brownlee 48:52 ... bigger ratios. Like, older videos might start to find that they separate more, uh, different genre videos that get, like, suggested a lot, might get a lot of, like, hover auto-plays. So we'll see how that goes.
Andrew Manganelli 49:03 I'm interested in channels that, like, for real clickbait. 'Cause a lot of times if something seems really crazy in the thumbnail, one of the things you do is you hover it to then see that you can immediately tell the video is nothing like what the thumbnail's like, and then be like, "I'm not watching this."
Marques Brownlee 49:18 Yeah, like a breaking news.
Andrew Manganelli 49:18 Now that gets a view. Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 49:20 Yeah, something like that.
Cupertino Fruit Company
Marques Brownlee 49:22 TBD. Anyway-
Andrew Manganelli 49:23 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 49:23 ... speaking of breaking news, we did get some new, uh, products from the fruit company in Cupertino. New Macs, Mac Mini and Mac Studio. These two, uh, also have new chips, so it's kind of a new computer story, but mostly a new chip story. The M6 chip is out already, just the base M6, so we have a new M6 Mac Mini. It's a two-nanometer chip. That's very exciting. And there's also a new, uh, M5 Pro Mac Mini. There's also a new M5 Ultra chip finally, and they shoved it in a Mac Studio, and oh my God, it has all the things. I may or may not have pre-ordered an M5 Ultra Mac Studio already because it's a studio, and yes-
Andrew Manganelli 50:06 I'm gonna go with a
Marques Brownlee 50:06 ... why wouldn't I? So okay, just to summarize, there are two new chips. There's an M6 chip, and there's an M5 Ultra chip.
Andrew Manganelli 50:14 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 50:14 And with those new chips, we get a couple of new computers. They've refreshed the Mac Mini, so now there's an M6 Mac Mini.
Andrew Manganelli 50:21 Mm.
Marques Brownlee 50:21 And they're throwing in M5 Pro into the Mac Mini, which is also a new computer.
Andrew Manganelli 50:24 Mm-hmm.
Marques Brownlee 50:25 And there's a new Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra. No other machine got the M5 Ultra, but that's where the M5 Ultra goes. So those are the new computers that we can talk about. I think the most interesting one is probably the base M6 Mac Mini.
Andrew Manganelli 50:38 Mm-hmm.
Marques Brownlee 50:39 Because, God, that used to be, like, the deal of the century-
Andrew Manganelli 50:41 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 50:41 ... for a solid six months or however long it was. You could get one for $500. The base Mac Mini was one of the best deals-
Andrew Manganelli 50:47 Best deals
Marques Brownlee 50:48 ... in the tech world. They updated to M6. Now the base Mac Mini costs $900.
Andrew Manganelli 50:54 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 50:55 Which is not even-
Andrew Manganelli 50:56 It's still a-
Marques Brownlee 50:57 It's almost double
Andrew Manganelli 50:58 ... it's still an amazing computer.
Marques Brownlee 50:59 Again, we're in the era of-
Andrew Manganelli 51:01 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 51:01 ... cost inflation, of, like, everything costs more now, and also, you know, it's going to be a good computer, but also a better computer, so there's lots more to talk about. I think M6 is gonna basically be the fastest single-thread chip Apple makes. I mean, it should be, right? Other than maybe the iPhone. Um, and so it's gonna be a phenomenal computer, much more capable than the previous one, but yeah, not even close to as cheap.
Andrew Manganelli 51:23 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 51:24 Uh, two nanometers now, 170 gigabytes per second unified memory, uh, 12 core GPU, double the neural engine, I believe, uh, and lots of improvement over... They usually compare it to M1, so they're saying, "Oh yeah, it's two and a half times faster than M1," 'cause they don't compare it to the last gen anymore. They always compare it to the beginning of Apple Silicon.
Andrew Manganelli 51:41 They said 1.2 times faster multi-threaded performance compared to M5.
Marques Brownlee 51:44 Great. Okay. So yeah, 1.2, so 20% faster multi-thread-
Andrew Manganelli 51:48 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 51:48 ... but obviously much, much faster than M1. So great. M6 chip now. In the future, we can expect to see M6 Pro and M6 Max in that touch screen MacBook Pro.
Andrew Manganelli 51:57 Yes, which means it could possibly still come out this year. I was worried that it was gonna get pushed to next year.
Marques Brownlee 52:03 I think, I think so. I think I'm expecting, like, an October type-
Andrew Manganelli 52:07 That's so awesome
Marques Brownlee 52:07 ... of event for this touch screen OLED MacBook Pro.
Andrew Manganelli 52:10 I don't even wanna know how much it's gonna cost, but I do want it.
Marques Brownlee 52:13 All of it.
Andrew Manganelli 52:14 Yeah. Yes.
Marques Brownlee 52:14 It's gonna cost all of it.
Andrew Manganelli 52:15 Especially if they put an Ultra chip in it.
Marques Brownlee 52:17 They can't possibly do that.
Andrew Manganelli 52:19 Yeah, probably not. You're right.
Marques Brownlee 52:20 But speaking of the Ultra chip, that M5 Ultra, oh my God, it's powerful.
Andrew Manganelli 52:25 Yeah. But can I just say this... So we talked about price on Mac Mini and how it's so much more expensive now.
Marques Brownlee 52:30 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 52:30 And even in the press release of it, Mini has always been this, like, great for students, great for creators. They peppered in so much more talk about LLMs and AI-
Marques Brownlee 52:40 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 52:40 ... in the press release-
Marques Brownlee 52:41 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 52:41 ... about using this.
Marques Brownlee 52:42 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 52:42 Which is probably one of the main reasons it's so high. It's actually... It's so funny, that Twitter clip that's going around of that guy, like, unpacking all those laptops to, like, put-
Marques Brownlee 52:50 It's so-
Andrew Manganelli 52:50 ... in his AI server rack.
Marques Brownlee 52:51 It's so sad.
Andrew Manganelli 52:52 Two days before this got announced.
Marques Brownlee 52:53 [laughs] Cursed.
Andrew Manganelli 52:54 And they're all like-
Marques Brownlee 52:54 Cursed videos
Andrew Manganelli 52:55 ... that, that guy deserved that. But, um, that was a poor timing.
Marques Brownlee 52:58 Well, this was a surprise announcement, like it came out of nowhere.
Andrew Manganelli 53:00 Yeah, I had no idea. It was... I was gonna say this before. The surprise of it was Myles talking to Marques about, I think, an auto focus video, and Marques just completely stopped listening to Myles. [laughs] And I heard Myles continue to drag on and then go, "Oh wait, what is that?" 'Cause Marques had on his screen-
Marques Brownlee 53:17 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 53:17 ... the new Minis getting launched-
Marques Brownlee 53:19 I just got an email
Andrew Manganelli 53:19 ... out of nowhere in the marketing.
Marques Brownlee 53:20 When Marques posted in Slack, he said, "They dropped this all," and I said, "What?" [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 53:23 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 53:24 'Cause I think, like-
Andrew Manganelli 53:25 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 53:25 ... three hours earlier we'd saw, like, a rumor that they may announce it before the September event.
Andrew Manganelli 53:30 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 53:30 And we were like, "Oh, that would be interest- Oh, and they're here."
Andrew Manganelli 53:32 And they're here. [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 53:32 And they're here. So they're here.
Andrew Manganelli 53:34 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 53:34 Um, I may have also bought one.
Andrew Manganelli 53:38 Okay.
Marques Brownlee 53:38 I mean, I wanna see how good it is.
Andrew Manganelli 53:39 Do you wanna talk about the Ultra chip?
Marques Brownlee 53:41 But yeah, the M5 Ultra chip as well. So for those who don't know the Ultra chip, it's been a long time since we got a new one. I think M3 Ultra-
Andrew Manganelli 53:48 Three was the last one
Marques Brownlee 53:48 ... is the last one that we got, which was in a Mac Studio, and the, the Mac Pro was still on M2 Ultra.
Andrew Manganelli 53:53 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 53:53 So it shows how much they've, like, really kept up to date with it. But it's essentially fusing together two M5 Max chips, and, uh, that gets you a solid, let me read this here, 64 core GPU-
Andrew Manganelli 54:05 Mm
Marques Brownlee 54:05 ... 30 core CPU, 32 core neural engine, and starting at 96 gigs of unified memory, uh, and up to 512 gigs of unified memory. With one-
Andrew Manganelli 54:16 Starting at 96 gigs [laughs] of RAM.
Marques Brownlee 54:19 Yeah. And I think it's, uh, I think the-
Andrew Manganelli 54:20 That's crazy
Marques Brownlee 54:21 ... the number was, like 1.2 terabytes-
Andrew Manganelli 54:23 1.2 terabytes of unified memory bandwidth, yeah
Marques Brownlee 54:26 ... per second.
Andrew Manganelli 54:27 It's cr-
Marques Brownlee 54:27 Just, yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 54:28 Dude.
Marques Brownlee 54:28 I- this is not a machine that, again, regular people or anyone, even, even video editors are, are mostly going to have to clamor over. This is for people who have specific use cases with, like, oh, I need to run a massive local LLM in the-
Andrew Manganelli 54:40 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 54:40 ... unified memory, or I need to-
Andrew Manganelli 54:42 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 54:42 ... like, you know-
Andrew Manganelli 54:44 That's pretty much it
Marques Brownlee 54:44 ... bundle it. Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 54:45 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 54:45 It's... Well, that's for the unified memory part, but for the massive GPU part, this is, like, uh, 3D rendering, intense color correction. Obviously video editing is, like, the low end of what this thing is designed for.
Andrew Manganelli 54:56 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 54:57 Um, it's what I'm gonna be doing with it.
Andrew Manganelli 54:59 I wanna see the benchmarks so bad.
Marques Brownlee 55:01 But yeah, the benchmarks are gonna be silly, and I'm excited.
Andrew Manganelli 55:03 15-minute benchmar- a 15-minute video rendered in one minute.
Marques Brownlee 55:06 I just can't wait.
Andrew Manganelli 55:09 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 55:09 I've been chasing real-time video exports my entire 8K career.
Andrew Manganelli 55:14 But we passed real time, didn't we?
Marques Brownlee 55:16 Not exports.
Andrew Manganelli 55:17 Really?
Marques Brownlee 55:17 So, like, a 10-minute video will take 20 minutes to export.
Andrew Manganelli 55:21 So-
Marques Brownlee 55:21 Which is awesome.
Andrew Manganelli 55:22 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 55:22 Like an 8K R3D Raw transcode from, you know, all the chopped up timeline to all my graphics, and effects, and transitions, and color correction, and sharpening, and all of that. Exporting a 10-minute video in 20 minutes, that's pretty sick. But I've been chasing the real-time export-
David Imel 55:39 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 55:39 ... and I think this is gonna get meaningfully closer to that.
David Imel 55:42 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 55:42 So-
David Imel 55:43 You, you can configure this with up to 512 gigabytes of RAM-
Marques Brownlee 55:47 So on that note-
David Imel 55:48 Which is crazy [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 55:49 ... you can pre-order an M5 Ultra Mac Studio today.
David Imel 55:53 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 55:53 And just for funsies, I went through and maxed everything out. You can spend $18,300 on a Mac Studio. That does not include the 512 gigs of unified memory.
David Imel 56:07 Oh.
Marques Brownlee 56:07 That only goes up to 256.
David Imel 56:09 Oh.
Marques Brownlee 56:09 So when they do drop the 512 gig version, for you local LLM freaks out there-
David Imel 56:14 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 56:15 ... that's gonna be a very, very expensive machine.
David Imel 56:17 Right.
Marques Brownlee 56:17 Now, that's also 16 terabytes of internal memory, so I-
Andrew Manganelli 56:20 Storage, storage, storage.
Marques Brownlee 56:21 Yeah, internal storage.
Andrew Manganelli 56:22 Holy [beep] .
David Imel 56:22 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 56:23 [laughs] 16, 16 terabytes of SSD-
David Imel 56:26 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 56:26 ... um, which sounds silly, unless you work with massive video files. Um, so that's another reason why it's so expensive.
David Imel 56:33 I'm a video file. I love videos.
Marques Brownlee 56:34 [laughs] Yeah. I am a video file. But yeah.
David Imel 56:36 I need to humbly request another Short where you explain what all the Max and Ultra chips mean now.
Andrew Manganelli 56:41 If you look at this script-
David Imel 56:42 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 56:42 ... I have everything wrong because I'm still so confused in this. Like, so much of this, I have the wrong chip name because not only is it confusing, but to then release M6 base and then go M5 Ultra, like-
David Imel 56:55 Am I the only one-
Andrew Manganelli 56:55 The releases just make it very confusing
David Imel 56:57 ... am I the only one who finds this very simple and intuitive?
Andrew Manganelli 56:59 Yes. Pro-
David Imel 57:01 I-
Andrew Manganelli 57:01 Base, Pro, Max, Ultra, but then we also release things-
Marques Brownlee 57:06 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 57:06 ... out of order.
Marques Brownlee 57:07 The only thing that makes it confusing is the out of order release timing.
Andrew Manganelli 57:09 Yes. Yeah.
David Imel 57:09 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 57:09 But as far as, like, what's more capable, it's very clear, I think.
Andrew Manganelli 57:13 I think it's also that, and they've just skipped some. There, there's no M4 Ultra, right?
Marques Brownlee 57:17 True. They've skipped some.
Andrew Manganelli 57:19 Yeah. So there's just, like, this-
Marques Brownlee 57:20 So there's a base chip
Andrew Manganelli 57:21 ... random board of chips that-
Marques Brownlee 57:23 There's a base chip. You can put the base chip in any of the base stuff, like M- Now it's M6, right? So we have it in the Mac Mini. I will expect to see an M6 iPad and an M6 Mac, an iMac, and, like, all the base stuff.
David Imel 57:36 MacBook Air.
Marques Brownlee 57:36 MacBook Air, right?
David Imel 57:37 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 57:37 Then you have Pro and Max versions of the chip, which are essentially doubling the GPU capabilities, and I expect those to be in the Pro level stuff, like MacBook Pro. And then once in a while, if you're lucky, you'll get an Ultra version of the chip, which fuses two Maxes together, and then you get the real freaky, uh, benchmark results and extremely powerful Mac Studio-
Andrew Manganelli 57:56 I think-
Marques Brownlee 57:56 ... and Mac Pro
Andrew Manganelli 57:57 ... once in a while, 'cause you're lucky, is the reason it continues to be more confusing, because-
Marques Brownlee 58:02 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 58:02 ... and also, like, Pro and Max, we're used to it together in this one term, where now Pro and Max is separate. And, like, all of them are just good adjectives. They're not laddering adjectives. Like, all of those m-
Marques Brownlee 58:14 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 58:15 Ultra Max means the maximum.
Marques Brownlee 58:17 Technically, Max is the maximum.
Andrew Manganelli 58:18 And then Ultra is two maximums.
David Imel 58:20 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 58:20 That doesn't make sense.
Marques Brownlee 58:21 That is factually... That's true.
David Imel 58:22 Double the Max.
Marques Brownlee 58:22 That is very true. I guess I'm used to knowing that Pro is a little above base, and then Max-
Andrew Manganelli 58:27 That's fair
Marques Brownlee 58:27 ... is a little above Pro, and then Ultra-
Andrew Manganelli 58:30 Yes
Marques Brownlee 58:30 ... is above Max.
David Imel 58:30 Pro Max.
Andrew Manganelli 58:31 Pro Max. That's the issue.
Marques Brownlee 58:32 Pro Max also, that's... Apple does do Pro Max too, which is annoying. Um, but anyway, I have also pre-ordered a Mac Studio. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 58:39 Worth noting that because you said these are all pre-orders, and they come out September 22nd-
Marques Brownlee 58:43 That's a-
Andrew Manganelli 58:43 ... I believe
Marques Brownlee 58:44 ... long time away
Andrew Manganelli 58:44 ... that's a little while away.
David Imel 58:45 Take your time. Almost a month.
Marques Brownlee 58:47 Take your time.
David Imel 58:47 That's gonna be after the September event.
Andrew Manganelli 58:49 That's just gotta mean that the September event has so much stuff in it-
Marques Brownlee 58:53 That's-
Andrew Manganelli 58:53 ... that they can't toss this on at the end, but they want it-
Marques Brownlee 58:55 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 58:55 ... to still come out similar time.
Marques Brownlee 58:56 I actually, I think two of that is happening. One, and you guys mentioned this in, about the iPhone, I think the September event is heavy on Pro and Fold.
David Imel 59:06 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 59:06 And they wanted to spend so much time on the Fold especially, that they had to move some stuff out of there, so they moved the base iPhones completely out of the September event-
David Imel 59:14 Which makes sense to me
Marques Brownlee 59:14 ... to make a way to focus on the, the crazy stuff.
David Imel 59:16 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 59:16 That's why I think we're gonna see that in, like, spring-
David Imel 59:18 Spring
Marques Brownlee 59:18 ... or, like, uh, early next year. And then for the October event, which we typically see as, like, the Pro computer event, they're gonna focus so much on new MacBook Pro with OLED touch screen, blah, blah, blah, that they needed to move some stuff out of there. And so here we're getting iMac, or Mac Mini and Mac Studio updates ahead of time, M6 chip ahead of time, so that they can get to that and spend more time in October.
Andrew Manganelli 59:42 And visually, like, these are the least impressive. Even though these are incredible, iPhone Fold is a folding iPhone you get to see.
Marques Brownlee 59:49 They got to explain.
Andrew Manganelli 59:50 New MacBooks, like, all these things are things you can see. These are just little-
Marques Brownlee 59:54 They-
Andrew Manganelli 59:54 ... super powerful computers.
Marques Brownlee 59:55 Yeah. They, they, they really have some paradigm explanations to do for... Like, we've never had a folding iPhone. They really have to explain to the public why they would want a folding iPhone for the first time ever. And for the touch screen MacBook Pro, it's been so many years of MacBook Pros not having touch screens. When they finally do one, they really are gonna have to spend some time explaining and justifying, "Here's why we're making this. Here's why you might want a touch screen laptop." So make some room in those events, and then yeah, move stuff till early next year.
Andrew Manganelli 1:00:26 Speaking of the Apple event.
David Imel 1:00:27 Oh, yeah. It just got announced.
Marques Brownlee 1:00:28 It did just get announced. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:00:29 Oh, it just got announced.
David Imel 1:00:29 Live on the podcast. It'll be-
Andrew Manganelli 1:00:31 Yeah
David Imel 1:00:31 ... uh, September 9th. It's Wednesday this year, which never happens. It's always the second Tuesday, but it is Labor Day that Monday, so I think that they just don't want people to travel on a holiday.
Marques Brownlee 1:00:40 Can I comment on this graphic?
David Imel 1:00:43 Yeah. I wanna talk about it.
Marques Brownlee 1:00:43 You see this graphic?
David Imel 1:00:44 Yeah. It's upright.
Marques Brownlee 1:00:45 It looks like I just highlighted it with my mouse, but I didn't.
David Imel 1:00:48 Oh.
Marques Brownlee 1:00:48 That's actually what it looks like.
David Imel 1:00:49 Hmm.
Marques Brownlee 1:00:50 Doesn't it kinda look like it was, like, a darker image that I highlighted?
Andrew Manganelli 1:00:54 Oh.
David Imel 1:00:54 Very interesting.
Speaker 1:00:55 To me, it look, it reminds me of the, uh, the sunshine flavored LaCroix.
Andrew Manganelli 1:00:58 Wait. The iPhone's gonna have Highlight?
David Imel 1:01:00 So the tagline this year is Surprise and Shine. There's the Apple logo with sort of, like, this displacement effect, and it's sort of glowing, and it has the, it has this, like, lens flare going around the, the Apple logo. Strangely, I would've thought that they would've had some nod to the Fold.
Andrew Manganelli 1:01:15 Yeah.
David Imel 1:01:15 But I have no idea what this is gonna be, unless, like, I don't know, maybe the, the, um, torch is gonna be, like, 30 times brighter.
Andrew Manganelli 1:01:22 Why are we all calling it a torch?
Speaker 1:01:24 Yeah. What the hell? When did this happen?
David Imel 1:01:25 It's a flashlight, people.
Speaker 1:01:26 You know, Marques goes to the UK... I guess not.
Andrew Manganelli 1:01:28 [laughs]
Speaker 1:01:28 And I mess it up. I mess it up this time.
Marques Brownlee 1:01:32 Careful. Careful.
David Imel 1:01:33 Careful, Ellis. Careful, Ellis.
Marques Brownlee 1:01:36 I got torched. I got torched for that last time.
Speaker 1:01:38 This is an island of our time, and it's all torch this, torch that.
David Imel 1:01:40 I got torched for saying that last time, so be careful.
Andrew Manganelli 1:01:43 Yeah.
David Imel 1:01:43 Uh, yeah, so I don't know. I don't know why they're calling it Surprise and Shine. Like, what is it gonna have to do with that?
Marques Brownlee 1:01:48 Surprise and Shine.
David Imel 1:01:49 Surprise and...
Marques Brownlee 1:01:50 Well, it's the play on-
David Imel 1:01:50 Nothing's really a surprise unless there's a crazy surprise
Andrew Manganelli 1:01:52 ... except that it was on a Wednesday
David Imel 1:01:54 Ah, sure, yeah [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:01:55 Any rise and shines?
David Imel 1:01:56 Well, yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:01:57 It's a play on rise and shine, so surprise.
Andrew Manganelli 1:01:59 The fold has to rise up when you open it.
Marques Brownlee 1:02:02 Oh, yeah. That is actually the best thing I've heard so far [laughing]
David Imel 1:02:05 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:02:05 It might just be that. It's gonna have to rise open. Oh. Risers.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:09 Wrong one.
David Imel 1:02:09 Yeah, that was the wrong one.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:10 Boo. [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:02:11 That's it.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:12 Well, they did announce one more thing.
Marques Brownlee 1:02:13 They did? Oh, God.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:14 Not everything is affected by Ramageddon.
Marques Brownlee 1:02:16 Yeah, some stuff.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:16 The polishing cloth at Apple is now $9.
Marques Brownlee 1:02:19 What? It's less than half expensive.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:21 Less than half the price. [clapping] What I'm confused about here-
Marques Brownlee 1:02:24 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:25 And there, we don't have confirmation yet.
David Imel 1:02:26 It is a great polishing cloth, just gonna say.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:28 It is a nice polishing cloth.
Marques Brownlee 1:02:29 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:30 Is it smaller? We're assuming it's smaller, right? This, this-
Marques Brownlee 1:02:34 I don't know.
David Imel 1:02:34 It, unconfirmed.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:35 It's unconfirmed because this store page has the overview of the polishing cloth. It has what's in the box.
Marques Brownlee 1:02:41 The compa-
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:41 Which is-
Marques Brownlee 1:02:42 Importantly, the compatibility list.
David Imel 1:02:43 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:43 Of 50-plus model length list of compatibilities.
Marques Brownlee 1:02:48 Yep.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:48 Nowhere does it say the dimensions of this polishing cloth.
Marques Brownlee 1:02:51 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:51 How?
Marques Brownlee 1:02:52 That's so funny.
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:52 It even has... Oh, my good-
Marques Brownlee 1:02:55 Yeah
Andrew Manganelli 1:02:55 ... based on the Apple logo, presumably the same size as the previous cloth. It is, I guess, takes up more space. I think it's smaller.
Marques Brownlee 1:03:03 Look.
Andrew Manganelli 1:03:03 It's $9. Is the last, is the other one not available anymore? I don't think it is.
Marques Brownlee 1:03:06 If this was a bid to make people less mad about the prices of everything else going up, it's working.
Andrew Manganelli 1:03:11 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:03:12 That's all they had to do. They decided to make the polishing cloth cheaper [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:03:15 Nine bucks.
Marques Brownlee 1:03:16 And people used to meme it for $19. My hot take was always that it was worth $19, 'cause it's really good. Like, it's a nano, you know, it's not a microfiber-
Andrew Manganelli 1:03:24 It felt-
Marques Brownlee 1:03:25 ... it's nanofiber basically.
Andrew Manganelli 1:03:26 I feel like it can be good and not worth $19.
Marques Brownlee 1:03:28 I like-
David Imel 1:03:28 No, it has a fatal flaw, which is, like, if your phone is not insane... If, if anything you wipe with it is not ridiculously clean before you polish it, that cloth gets so disgusting-
Marques Brownlee 1:03:39 Yeah
David Imel 1:03:39 ... and will never not be disgusting.
Marques Brownlee 1:03:41 That's also true, yeah. The nanofiber has-
David Imel 1:03:42 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 1:03:43 ... got pretty...
Andrew Manganelli 1:03:43 The hot take is na- maybe it's not even a hot take. It's not a good polishing cloth.
Marques Brownlee 1:03:47 Whoa. Whoa.
Andrew Manganelli 1:03:48 Oh.
Marques Brownlee 1:03:49 Just as far as- No, no, it's good at- Well, it's- It's good at polishing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
David Imel 1:03:52 Oh, okay.
Marques Brownlee 1:03:52 Specifically. That's good, yeah, exactly.
David Imel 1:03:53 Got it.
Marques Brownlee 1:03:54 It's, it's specifically good at, like, you have a clean surface you need to polish, and it's already... The grit's gone. You just need to polish it and make it shiny-
David Imel 1:04:01 That's usually great
Marques Brownlee 1:04:01 ... or super clean. Then that's what it's good for.
David Imel 1:04:03 Yeah, use sandpaper to get the rest of the stuff off.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:05 [laughs] I just use my, I just... [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:09 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:04:09 Usually works like a charm.
David Imel 1:04:11 Mm.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:11 Yeah. No, don't do that. Don't do that.
David Imel 1:04:13 No.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:13 That's gonna be a GIF, unfortunately. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:15 A GI- Yep. [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:04:16 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:17 GIF. GIF, but yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:19 A GIF. A GIF. You go to the UK w- Sorry. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:22 [laughs] Anyway.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:24 You go on the internet one time.
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:25 You go on the internet one time.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:26 We should take a break.
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:27 All right, we gotta take a break.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:28 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:28 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:29 Trivia question?
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:30 Trivia question. [upbeat music]
David Imel 1:04:32 Why'd you say it like a question? Of course, we have a trivia question.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:35 Trivia question.
David Imel 1:04:35 Trivia.
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:36 Trivia.
David Imel 1:04:37 All right, this one I'm stealing from Ellis 'cause I love it so much. The Pixel has taken many shapes and forms over the years, but only two iterations of the Pixel have had the front-facing camera in the top left corner of the phone.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:47 Oh.
David Imel 1:04:48 What were they?
Marques Brownlee 1:04:49 I know one of them.
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:50 Pixel, okay, so not Nexus.
David Imel 1:04:52 Exactly.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:52 Two iterations.
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:54 Hmm.
David Imel 1:04:55 There were two.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:56 Okay.
David Imel 1:04:56 And then there were two.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:57 Hold on. Oh, I know both of these.
Andrew Manganelli 1:04:59 I think I know both.
Marques Brownlee 1:04:59 In the top left corner of-
David Imel 1:05:01 The phone
Marques Brownlee 1:05:01 ... are we not counting foldables?
David Imel 1:05:03 No.
Marques Brownlee 1:05:04 Because in the inside screen of the foldable-
David Imel 1:05:05 I'm gonna say no. Let's not-
Marques Brownlee 1:05:06 You said top left?
David Imel 1:05:06 Yeah, yeah, top left.
Marques Brownlee 1:05:07 Top left, okay.
David Imel 1:05:07 Let's not count foldables.
Andrew Manganelli 1:05:08 And you're using this term-
David Imel 1:05:08 Foldable is top right.
Marques Brownlee 1:05:09 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 1:05:10 Okay.
Marques Brownlee 1:05:11 Okay, top left corner. No. I know this.
Andrew Manganelli 1:05:13 Hmm, hmm. Okay, I know one of them.
Marques Brownlee 1:05:16 I remember.
Andrew Manganelli 1:05:16 Remember Soli. [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:05:18 Oh, Wave. Don't.
Andrew Manganelli 1:05:19 We should... We'll be right back.
Marques Brownlee 1:05:21 We'll be right back. [upbeat music]

Pokemon Sleep
Marques Brownlee 1:07:31 back. This is a fun, weird collaboration I just wanted to bring up. So, uh, Fitbit Air, as we all know, I'm still rocking mine. It's, uh, really gross now.
Andrew Manganelli 1:07:39 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:07:40 Um, I should probably shower with it on, just like-
Andrew Manganelli 1:07:42 I've been charging my Whoop this entire time
Marques Brownlee 1:07:44 ... in the shower? No. Mm-hmm. I'm not-
David Imel 1:07:46 They, they tell you to.
Marques Brownlee 1:07:48 Charging in the shower?
David Imel 1:07:48 They tell you to.
Andrew Manganelli 1:07:48 I'm pretty sure you are not supposed to do that.
Marques Brownlee 1:07:50 That's insane.
David Imel 1:07:50 No, you are.
Andrew Manganelli 1:07:51 You are. Yeah, you can.
Marques Brownlee 1:07:52 So every single time I take it o- I used to take-
Andrew Manganelli 1:07:54 Only the new one
David Imel 1:07:54 ... a bath to take a show- take a shower, it would be like, "No, you can charge it in the shower." And it sends you a notification.
Andrew Manganelli 1:08:00 Oh my God.
David Imel 1:08:00 And it's like [laughs] -
Marques Brownlee 1:08:01 Hell no
David Imel 1:08:01 ... it's, it's waterproof.
Andrew Manganelli 1:08:02 Why would I ever want to do... Oh, okay.
David Imel 1:08:03 Anyway, we got a Fitbit Air update, which is kinda cool. Um, there is a Pokemon Sleep collaboration with the Fitbit Air.
Andrew Manganelli 1:08:10 What? 'Cause that's what we were waiting for.
David Imel 1:08:11 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:08:11 [laughs]
David Imel 1:08:12 So if you don't know what Pokemon Sleep is-
Andrew Manganelli 1:08:14 I don't
David Imel 1:08:14 ... you don't know what Pokemon Sleep is. Uh, it's an app that is mostly made for kids to, like, help them go to bed. Uh, y- there's a Snorlax, there's other Pokemon you can collect.
Andrew Manganelli 1:08:26 For kids and David and I.
David Imel 1:08:28 Well, look.
Speaker 1:08:28 [laughs]
David Imel 1:08:29 I'm gonna get a... I would get a lot of crap for saying this is for ki- It's just like the robot movie. Whatever.
Andrew Manganelli 1:08:33 [laughs]
David Imel 1:08:34 Anyway. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:08:35 The robot movie.
Speaker 1:08:36 [laughs]
David Imel 1:08:37 Just because-
Marques Brownlee 1:08:38 Oh, boy
David Imel 1:08:39 ... just because something is targeted at kids doesn't mean only kids can enjoy it, okay?
Marques Brownlee 1:08:44 Ah, I see.
David Imel 1:08:45 You know what I'm saying?
Andrew Manganelli 1:08:46 I feel like that's more like MrBeast videos.
David Imel 1:08:47 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:08:48 I don't enjoy those.
Andrew Manganelli 1:08:49 Marvel.
David Imel 1:08:50 Marvel.
Marques Brownlee 1:08:50 Spider-Man.
David Imel 1:08:51 Not Marvel. Not really Spider-Man.
Speaker 1:08:53 Oh my God.
David Imel 1:08:53 Pokemon. Pokemon's the perfect example.
Marques Brownlee 1:08:54 Pokemon. Park, yeah, Pokemon is perfect.
David Imel 1:08:57 It's targeted at kids, but I love Pokemon, and I'm 31.
Marques Brownlee 1:09:00 Okay.
David Imel 1:09:00 I'm turning to dust.
Speaker 1:09:03 Oh.
David Imel 1:09:03 So anyway, they have a Pokemon Sleep c-
Marques Brownlee 1:09:04 Got Pokemon over here
David Imel 1:09:04 ... Pokemon Sleep, it's an app that came out that basically it tracks your sleep, and then the better you sleep, the more you can, like, befriend these Pokemon and level up the Pokemon and do stuff like that. So it's like-
Marques Brownlee 1:09:17 Mm
David Imel 1:09:17 ... it's a game you play when you wake up and you try to get a better sleep score, and it's just trying to encourage kids to, like, go to bed and sleep better, right?
Marques Brownlee 1:09:25 Oh.
David Imel 1:09:25 It's been out for a couple years.
Andrew Manganelli 1:09:26 Noble, noble cause.
David Imel 1:09:28 Noble cause.
Andrew Manganelli 1:09:28 I can't play this 'cause Pokemon bothers me.
Marques Brownlee 1:09:29 I don't think it would motivate me.
Speaker 1:09:30 How do you-
Andrew Manganelli 1:09:31 Sorry.
David Imel 1:09:31 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 1:09:31 We're tracking kids' sleep?
David Imel 1:09:34 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:09:34 I guess, yeah.
David Imel 1:09:35 Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 1:09:35 I don't know why that sounds crazy to me.
David Imel 1:09:37 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:09:37 Also, I'm trying to prestige in Call of Duty. I ain't sleeping as a kid.
David Imel 1:09:40 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:09:41 Like, I'm not playing this game.
David Imel 1:09:42 Well, it's probably for, like, six-year-olds, you know?
Andrew Manganelli 1:09:45 I was on Call of Duty. [laughs]
Speaker 1:09:47 [laughs] I had already prestiged twice by six years old.
David Imel 1:09:51 Anyway.
Andrew Manganelli 1:09:51 Sorry. [laughs]
David Imel 1:09:53 So strange collaboration. Um, they are s- releasing a Pokemon Sleep band. The color is actually really nice.
Andrew Manganelli 1:10:00 Color's fantastic.
David Imel 1:10:01 It's, like, a really deep blue color. Um, but it does-
Marques Brownlee 1:10:04 It's, it's more Steph Curry colors than the Steph Curry band probably.
David Imel 1:10:07 True.
Andrew Manganelli 1:10:07 Really?
Marques Brownlee 1:10:08 Yeah.
David Imel 1:10:08 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:10:08 The Golden State Warriors are, like, blue and gold just like this.
Andrew Manganelli 1:10:11 Mm.
David Imel 1:10:11 And this is more of the blue that the Golden State Warriors are, yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:10:14 Yeah.
David Imel 1:10:14 Uh, it has a little tag on it that says Pokemon Sleep, which I don't think they should've added. I think that's... The word mark is a little bit ugly, but it's got a sleeping Pikachu on it.
Andrew Manganelli 1:10:21 The word mark is weird.
David Imel 1:10:22 It's weird to have a Pokemon Sleep word mark on a band that you're gonna wear all day. You know what I mean?
Marques Brownlee 1:10:27 Yeah.
David Imel 1:10:27 When it says Pokemon Sleep. Unless the whole point is to only put this on before you go to bed, which is also a thing, I guess.
Marques Brownlee 1:10:32 It is easy to change bands-
David Imel 1:10:33 You could... Yeah
Marques Brownlee 1:10:33 ... if you really wanted
David Imel 1:10:34 ... yeah, but every day is crazy.
Marques Brownlee 1:10:35 Yeah, I wouldn't do it every day.
Speaker 1:10:36 Come on, it's pajama band.
David Imel 1:10:38 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:10:38 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:10:38 Pajama band.
Speaker 1:10:39 [laughs]
David Imel 1:10:39 Um, something that's cool about this though is that they, there's a, there's, like, four different Velcro notches on it. So the standard Fitbit Air is just one... Oh, I'm wrong.
Andrew Manganelli 1:10:50 Oh, I was gonna say.
David Imel 1:10:51 [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:10:51 I thought that looks exactly the same.
David Imel 1:10:53 Investigative journalism is so back.
Speaker 1:10:56 [laughs]
David Imel 1:10:59 Um...
Marques Brownlee 1:10:59 I didn't know that.
David Imel 1:10:59 No, it's so good.
Andrew Manganelli 1:11:00 Tell us what's cool about it.
David Imel 1:11:01 Nothing.
Speaker 1:11:01 [laughs]
David Imel 1:11:02 It's blue. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:11:04 Four Velcros. [laughs]
Speaker 1:11:06 I was wondering why the Velcro was in the strip.
David Imel 1:11:08 I, I-
Marques Brownlee 1:11:09 [laughs]
David Imel 1:11:10 ... I had only looked at this side of the Velcro.
Speaker 1:11:12 Oh.
David Imel 1:11:12 But it turns out... Yeah, never mind.
Speaker 1:11:15 Oh.
David Imel 1:11:15 Anyway, I like the dark blue color. That's all I gotta say.
Marques Brownlee 1:11:18 It's nice.
David Imel 1:11:18 Uh, and it's-
Andrew Manganelli 1:11:19 It looks nice
David Imel 1:11:19 ... yeah, they're doing an official collaboration with Pokemon Sleep. Um, right now, my, my, on my iPhone, it doesn't want to integrate with my Apple Health data or my Fitbit or my Google Health data yet.
Marques Brownlee 1:11:32 Oh.
David Imel 1:11:32 So, uh, it hasn't worked for me yet, but it might also need an update that isn't out yet. Because this technically gets announced tomorrow as of day of recording, but it will have already been announced by the time you guys hear about it.
Marques Brownlee 1:11:44 Yeah. Yeah.
David Imel 1:11:45 So it's blue.
Marques Brownlee 1:11:46 It's blue.
David Imel 1:11:47 And doesn't have anything special about its Velcro.
Speaker 1:11:49 [laughs]
David Imel 1:11:50 Which is unfortunate. But I just wanted to mention that.
Andrew Manganelli 1:11:53 Thank you for introducing me to Pokemon Sleep, 'cause I'm very, still very confused about it, but...
David Imel 1:11:58 Yeah. Try it. I don't know. Maybe you'll like it. I don't know.
Speaker 1:12:02 Did they tie it into, like, the move at all?
David Imel 1:12:04 Sl- uh, rest.
Speaker 1:12:06 Oh, is it, the move's not even called sleep?
David Imel 1:12:07 No, it's called rest.
Andrew Manganelli 1:12:08 No, there's a move called sleep.
Speaker 1:12:10 Isn't it a TM?
David Imel 1:12:10 No, there's not. It's called rest. I would know.
Andrew Manganelli 1:12:14 Sleep?
David Imel 1:12:15 I'm a 31-year-old who likes Pokemon.
Marques Brownlee 1:12:15 Sleep Powder. [laughs]
Speaker 1:12:16 You know, when you were-
David Imel 1:12:17 You can... Sleep Powder is also a move.
Marques Brownlee 1:12:18 Sleep Powder is a move.
David Imel 1:12:19 Yeah.
Speaker 1:12:19 I was sick all weekend, and I was playing Adam's 3DS for a lot of it. And, uh-
David Imel 1:12:24 Yeah
Speaker 1:12:24 ... you saying, talking about Pokemon being for kids but enjoyed by adults made me think.
David Imel 1:12:28 Yeah.
Speaker 1:12:28 I was playing, uh, Super Mario 3D Land.
David Imel 1:12:30 Oh, hell yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:12:31 Oh.
Speaker 1:12:31 Quite, quite fun. And the whole time I was thinking, "Damn, these, these buttons are really small," until I had the realization like, "Right, it's for children."
David Imel 1:12:40 [laughs]
Speaker 1:12:41 [laughs]
David Imel 1:12:41 It's targeted at children. We have to be clear about this because I love games. I love Pokemon. I love all this stuff.
Marques Brownlee 1:12:48 Mm-hmm.
David Imel 1:12:48 I, I still play Pokemon TCG Pocket on my phone.
Speaker 1:12:51 Yeah.
David Imel 1:12:51 'Cause I, I will never stop, even if Alex abandoned me.
Nothing OS 5.0 [Start]
David Imel 1:12:55 Anyway, we gotta move on. Uh, real quick, this also got announced this morning as of day of recording. Nothing OS 5.0, uh, it's a big update from them. It's mostly, like, cohesion and sort of spring cleaning in the summer update-
Marques Brownlee 1:13:10 Mm
David Imel 1:13:10 ... that makes the animations better. It makes them smoother. There's refreshed typefaces. There's new icons. There's two new lock screen clocks. It's sort of just, like, a visual refresh update, and it's making a lot of the things on the phone that were not cohesive more cohesive.
Marques Brownlee 1:13:27 I appreciate updates like this. I like that Android 17 was a lot of this stuff.
David Imel 1:13:31 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:13:31 It was a lot of like, "Hey, we've had stuff piling up in the corners that we're just gonna finally get to it and clean it up and make sure it's all working nicely."
David Imel 1:13:38 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:13:39 Uh, so if you make a skin for Android or if you make a, a ROM, like Nothing OS on top-
David Imel 1:13:44 Yeah
Marques Brownlee 1:13:44 ... you gotta do that, too.
David Imel 1:13:45 Yeah. They also made the, uh, dedicated Glyph app now, so you don't have to just go into the settings and, like, find-
Marques Brownlee 1:13:51 Oh
David Imel 1:13:51 ... the Glyph stuff.
Andrew Manganelli 1:13:52 That makes sense.
David Imel 1:13:52 Which I appreciate. I think that's really helpful.
Andrew Manganelli 1:13:54 Yeah.
David Imel 1:13:55 Um, there's small things like if you scan a QR code with the camera open, instead of the little icon of the link kinda moving with the QR code, it just gets affixed, which is helpful.
Marques Brownlee 1:14:06 To the bottom?
David Imel 1:14:07 To, like, I think wherever you scanned it from.
Marques Brownlee 1:14:10 Oh, okay.
Andrew Manganelli 1:14:10 I really like this new clock face widget where it's like-
Marques Brownlee 1:14:13 ... texts, but all kind of, it almost looks like comic-y. Yeah. And it can have, like, time, date, weather, you know, calendar things, but it doesn't feel like all these difference. It all feels cohesive- Yeah ... in between it. I think my favorite new feature, which is a Brandon feature through and through, um, is that now there's this new collector widget. So you can create a sticker out of anything that you take a photo of. It will cut out the object, and you can just stick that sticker on your home screen. That is very Brandon. [laughs] Which is so awesome. It's kind of sick. It's really cool. It's really cool. It's just, like, whimsy for no reason, which I really appreciate. Mm-hmm. Um, yeah, so I don't know. It's a nice update. It's a nice update. It would've been cooler if they explained it while not playing really terrible pool- Yeah ... and taking fake phone calls in that weird video they released. Yeah, the explanation video was, like, a really long video where they didn't even get to the update till seven minute- six and a half minutes through, and they're just playing pool the whole time, which is strange. I think they're just trying to be more relatable. They also released it on both the Nothing YouTube channel and Carl Pei's YouTube channel, which I did not know existed. Carl Pei, YouTuber, confirmed. Confirmed. [laughs] I mean, he, I mean, he does react... He does make react videos, so he is a YouTuber. Um, anyway. Okay Open beta is starting today as of day of recording, it will have been two days ago by the time you guys hear this, for Nothing Phone 3, and, uh, other devices will be rolling out over the coming months. But they do have a public calendar for when that's
WVFRM Premier League
Marques Brownlee 1:15:34 happening, so.
David Imel 1:15:35 Nice.
Marques Brownlee 1:15:36 Yeah, just had to mention that. Um, we have anything else before... What is this? For me, nothing. Adam wants to talk about something.
David Imel 1:15:40 I got one more thing. I've had a couple people ask me if I'm gonna do this again, and I wasn't going to, but you know what? Now I will. If you're into Premier League at all, we're doing a Waveform Fantasy League. Ellis is in it now. I got him in, and he picked Hull City for some reason, uh, as his squad. So.
Speaker 1:15:56 I picked, I picked Hull City the week before the league began-
David Imel 1:16:00 Yeah
Speaker 1:16:00 ... and I've been riding nothing but highs ever since.
Marques Brownlee 1:16:03 Nice.
Speaker 1:16:03 Go Tigers.
David Imel 1:16:04 By the time you listen to this episode, they will have lost again, but it's fine. So if you wanna join, link in the description. It'll be fun. Ellis and I are in there. Um.
Marques Brownlee 1:16:11 How many people can join? Is it, like, infinite?
David Imel 1:16:13 Last time there were hundreds, so I don't know.
Marques Brownlee 1:16:14 It's like there's no cap to it?
David Imel 1:16:16 I don't think so. I mean, I'm sure there is, but I don't think we've reached it.
Marques Brownlee 1:16:18 No cap? I mean, aren't there only so many-
David Imel 1:16:20 I've got no cap
Marques Brownlee 1:16:20 ... players in the league?
David Imel 1:16:22 What?
Marques Brownlee 1:16:22 Or can you just pick... I guess I don't know how it works.
Speaker 1:16:25 It's not like normal fantasy-
Marques Brownlee 1:16:26 Okay
Speaker 1:16:27 ... where you draft someone and then no one else can get them. It's, it's you essentially, like, pick, like, a roster.
Marques Brownlee 1:16:31 Okay.
Speaker 1:16:31 Like, everyone can have the same roster-
Marques Brownlee 1:16:33 Mm-hmm
Speaker 1:16:33 ... theoretically.
Marques Brownlee 1:16:34 Okay.
Speaker 1:16:34 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:16:34 Cool. [laughs] I feel like more people will- [laughs] Socialist
Robot Olympics
Marques Brownlee 1:16:38 Fantasy League. What's happening to Marques? Oh, man. I gotta say, okay, I, I wasn't gonna talk about this, but I have to. [laughs] After that reaction, you do. So much of my feed on social media, on all social media, YouTube, Twitter, Threads, Instagram, is this, like, humanoid robot Olympics. [laughs] Have you guys seen this? Yeah. [laughs] And every one of them is- So funny ... a slightly different disaster. Yeah. And it's really, I have so many questions. We don't have to get into it, but I'll just show you guys the one that, um- It is so funny ... I'll put it in my... Just, I just want you guys to think as you watch this, in regular track and field, isn't it a lane violation to leave your lane? Oh. Like, you're not allowed to leave your lane in the race. Well, Andrew leaves his lane at home all the time. So. That's a great pun. It's very sad. But yeah, just watch this video, and while you watch about it, while you watch this video, just think, like, "I don't, I don't think you're allowed to leave your lane."
David Imel 1:17:30 Wait, Andrew will watch it on my computer.
Marques Brownlee 1:17:31 What video? Yeah.
David Imel 1:17:32 Yeah. [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:17:35 [laughs] Oh, my God. These robots are so funny to watch running. [laughs] They're just- Oh, my God. [laughs] In 100 meter race, you're not supposed to leave your lane. For some reason, there is a competition happening in China where bipedal robots have to run as fast as physically possible. Four of them? And then when- Those are the same one ... when one of them runs faster than a human, they'll be like, "It broke Usain Bolt's record."
David Imel 1:17:56 Oh, yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:17:57 And it's like, well- It's a car ... it's a robot.
David Imel 1:17:59 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:17:59 Like, it's a-
David Imel 1:18:00 Yeah, but then it slammed into a wall and exploded.
Marques Brownlee 1:18:01 Yeah, and it exploded- Yeah, that's [laughs] ... into 12 pieces. They're really funny. I, yeah.
David Imel 1:18:05 The best part of this is that they can't stop, and they have to have that giant padded wall where-
Marques Brownlee 1:18:08 Why?
David Imel 1:18:08 ... half of them just explode when they hit it.
Marques Brownlee 1:18:11 They start from a stop, and then they start running. Why can't they stop running? [laughs] Look at this one. I don't- They can only crash into a wall? They all run past the finish line- Yeah ... and then 12 yards later, slam into a wall. How hard is it? They can only do the straightaway of the track, and then- No, they have 100 meter. They have 200s. All the ones- They have 400s ... we're watching here are just running straight and cannot curve at all, it seems. Oh, yeah. They got some curves. And- The funniest thing is that after they crash and break their legs, they carry them away on stretchers. [laughs] On stretchers. The stretchers are great. I don't know why there aren't robots carrying them away on stretchers. But- Because they'd explode if they did that. They slam into the wall for no reason. That's so funny. If you ever had any doubts about, uh, China being really far ahead in humanoid robots- [laughs] ... just watch some of these videos. Just Google World Humanoid Robot Games. Yeah. On any social media, and you'll see they are, they are cooking. Anyway, I think that's it. They're boxing. Some of them are boxing. There's soccer. There's boxing. There was one that did a clean and jerk, and it's just a robot picking up a weight. [laughs] How is that a competition? Of course it can pick up the weight. It's a robot. I don't know, man. Grip, grip strength. I don't know. Grip strength? Remember- I programmed the motors to- What was the robot- I think it was Tesla Bot, where they're like, "Don't worry, it can only deadlift, like, 40 pounds," and that was supposed to make us feel, like, comfortable with it. Yeah, it c- it can only run X miles per
Trivia scores
Marques Brownlee 1:19:22 hour and, like, pick up and grab stuff with strength. Just zigzag. Yeah. Just zigzag. You're fine. Yeah. Yeah. All right. We gotta do trivia. All right. Time for me to continually not get more- Da, da, da, da, da ... trivia points. Can I- Yeah. Uh, Marques said something really funny to me the other day, which was, "Don't worry, I would've gotten both the trivia questions wrong from last week." Yeah. And he apparently trusts you guys so little that his response to where is Texas Instruments headquarters was gonna be Shenzhen, China. [laughs]
Speaker 1:19:51 Okay, so, like, honestly-
Marques Brownlee 1:19:52 No, it's really smart
Speaker 1:19:54 ... if I was a Shenzhen manufacturing company, I would name my company Texas Instruments.
Marques Brownlee 1:19:59 Exactly.
Speaker 1:19:59 Like [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:20:00 Exactly. Either that or they would've just gotten acquired by a Chinese company by now.
Speaker 1:20:04 Oh my God.
Marques Brownlee 1:20:05 Yeah.
Speaker 1:20:05 That was like-
Marques Brownlee 1:20:06 One of the-
Speaker 1:20:06 I saw that Slack message, and it was one of the funniest things I've ever read.
Marques Brownlee 1:20:08 It's kind of like how Hasselblad is headquartered at the DJI headquarters- Yeah ... in China. Yeah. So it's not that far out. So anyway, I still have one-
David Imel 1:20:16 Trivia.
1:20:17 Yes. Guys, uh, WD-40, what does the WD stand for? Hint, it was the original manufacturer purpose. Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 1:20:31 Oh, wait.
David Imel 1:20:33 You got this.
Andrew Manganelli 1:20:34 [laughs] Does spelling count?
David Imel 1:20:38 I just read Marques' whiteboard and, um, crazy. [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:20:43 There's so many things it could be. Western Digital.
Andrew Manganelli 1:20:45 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:20:46 That's like one of them.
David Imel 1:20:47 What?
Marques Brownlee 1:20:47 That's not my guess. I'm just kidding.
Andrew Manganelli 1:20:49 That would be great. [laughs]
David Imel 1:20:50 Who would guess Western Digital?
Andrew Manganelli 1:20:51 [laughs]
Marques Brownlee 1:20:53 Who would guess-
David Imel 1:20:53 Wait, what?
Andrew Manganelli 1:20:55 Oh.
Marques Brownlee 1:20:56 Okay, I wrote Western Digital.
Andrew Manganelli 1:20:57 [laughs] Did you see him write that?
Marques Brownlee 1:21:00 No, I didn't. No.
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:01 You just guessed it?
Marques Brownlee 1:21:01 I just-
David Imel 1:21:02 Marques and I think alike a lot.
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:03 Just great minds. Great minds.
Marques Brownlee 1:21:04 Yeah, we think alike a lot.
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:05 I wrote water deterrent. I'm so close, alright?
Marques Brownlee 1:21:08 That's actually pretty good.
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:09 Oh.
David Imel 1:21:09 Close.
Marques Brownlee 1:21:10 I wrote wet drying.
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:13 What do you mean wet-
David Imel 1:21:14 How far behind?
1:21:15 Oh, Marques.
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:15 What?
Marques Brownlee 1:21:16 Hmm.
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:16 What do you mean wet drying?
Marques Brownlee 1:21:17 Because, like, it's-
David Imel 1:21:19 Like a-
Marques Brownlee 1:21:19 I don't know. Is that a thing that happens? Wet drying?
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:21 It, he means it, I-
David Imel 1:21:22 He means it's wet, it dries
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:23 ... I see what he means. Yeah. He's trying, it's, you're supposed to dry the wet.
Marques Brownlee 1:21:26 Yeah.
David Imel 1:21:26 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:21:26 You mean like how liquid chalk, you, like, put the, the liquid on your hands and it makes them dry after it, like, evaporates 'cause it's got alcohol?
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:32 Don't they call stuff like that wet dry?
Marques Brownlee 1:21:33 I, I think that would be more like it dries something.
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:35 I thought wet dry was a thing.
Marques Brownlee 1:21:36 Like how you put a sponge on top of water and then you lift it up and the water's gone.
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:39 That's just drying.
Marques Brownlee 1:21:41 Yeah. It's drying the wet. [laughs]
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:45 What's the actual answer?
Marques Brownlee 1:21:46 I presume that you guys are going to bat for me.
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:47 [laughs] Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:21:48 I don't really know what I got.
Andrew Manganelli 1:21:49 WD-40 sounds better than D-40.
David Imel 1:21:51 Unfortunately, the answer is water-
Marques Brownlee 1:21:54 Deterrent
David Imel 1:21:55 ... displacement.
Marques Brownlee 1:21:56 Ah.
David Imel 1:21:56 Displacement.
1:21:57 Water displacement.
Marques Brownlee 1:21:58 Oh.
David Imel 1:21:58 It was originally a coating for rockets to make sure they did not-
Marques Brownlee 1:22:02 Oh
David Imel 1:22:02 ... rust or corrode in their silos. Does anyone wanna guess what the 40 means?
Marques Brownlee 1:22:07 40 pounds of force?
Andrew Manganelli 1:22:08 That must be the density. The density versus water?
David Imel 1:22:11 No. A l- There's no, like, real confirmation on this, but allegedly, it was the 40th iteration of the formula.
Marques Brownlee 1:22:18 Oh.
Andrew Manganelli 1:22:18 Wow.
Marques Brownlee 1:22:19 You know, I can displace water, too.
David Imel 1:22:21 Yeah, you just hold onto the rocket.
Marques Brownlee 1:22:23 I just jump into it.
David Imel 1:22:24 Yeah.
1:22:25 Yes.
Marques Brownlee 1:22:25 Wow, another n- non-point for me.
David Imel 1:22:27 All right, next question. But first, quick update on the score. Marques with uno, Andrew with tres, David with cuatro.
Andrew Manganelli 1:22:36 Ha.
David Imel 1:22:37 Ha ha ha. All right. Question: The Pixel has taken many shapes and forms over the years, but only two iterations of the Pixel had the hole-punch front-facing camera-
Andrew Manganelli 1:22:46 Yeah
David Imel 1:22:47 ... in the top left corner of the phone.
Andrew Manganelli 1:22:49 Yeah.
David Imel 1:22:50 What were they?
1:22:53 But do we wanna ...
Marques Brownlee 1:22:57 Do we wanna...
David Imel 1:22:58 It's four individual phones. If you give me any of the two, I'll count them.
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:04 That's what's confusing me now.
Marques Brownlee 1:23:05 No, I'll, I'll explain it to you.
David Imel 1:23:07 There's-
1:23:07 But you have to get two. It can't be, like, one and one. Yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:12 But that, I think that's why I'm confused-
David Imel 1:23:13 I know Google's user-
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:14 ... which makes me think I got it wrong.
David Imel 1:23:15 This is Google's fault.
1:23:16 This is Google's fault. This is not my fault, okay? I'm doing great.
Marques Brownlee 1:23:19 All right.
David Imel 1:23:19 It's the Pixel Pro Max Ultra.
Marques Brownlee 1:23:21 Yeah.
David Imel 1:23:21 What don't you understand? All right, flip them and read. What do we got?
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:25 Hmm.
Marques Brownlee 1:23:26 All right. I'm gonna go first.
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:27 Kind of hedged. I kind of-
Marques Brownlee 1:23:27 The Pixel 6 had it in the middle.
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:30 Okay.
Marques Brownlee 1:23:30 So I'm probably wrong. So I said Pixel 6.
David Imel 1:23:33 Nope.
Marques Brownlee 1:23:33 And Pixel 4s.
David Imel 1:23:36 You wrote Pro?
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:36 Pixel 4.
David Imel 1:23:37 The 4 didn't have it.
Marques Brownlee 1:23:37 And then also Pixel 4 Pro and-
David Imel 1:23:39 But you're not getting the point for that, sorry.
Marques Brownlee 1:23:41 Oh, yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:41 Oh.
David Imel 1:23:41 There wasn't a Pixel 4 Pro.
Marques Brownlee 1:23:42 XL?
David Imel 1:23:43 Oh, yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:43 4 didn't have it?
David Imel 1:23:44 Oh, yeah.
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:44 Whatever.
David Imel 1:23:45 That's solely, though, which was-
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:46 Oh, you're right. Yeah.
David Imel 1:23:47 Way now.
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:48 No, Pixel 4 didn't have it, so you're wrong.
Marques Brownlee 1:23:50 Wait, w- Wait, why did I write Pixel 4?
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:52 What'd you guys write?
Marques Brownlee 1:23:53 I wrote Pixel 5.
Andrew Manganelli 1:23:55 5. Correct.
Marques Brownlee 1:23:57 Pixel 4 series, which was, it was just the 4a and 4a XL, wasn't it?
Andrew Manganelli 1:24:02 It was just the 4a XL.
David Imel 1:24:03 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:24:03 It was the 4.
David Imel 1:24:03 It was the 4 G.
Marques Brownlee 1:24:05 Oh, the 4a 5G.
David Imel 1:24:06 Yeah.
Marques Brownlee 1:24:07 Andrew was-
Andrew Manganelli 1:24:07 Oh, I'm so stupid.
Marques Brownlee 1:24:07 Which was the 4a XL.
Andrew Manganelli 1:24:09 I wrote 5a, but it's 'cause of the release dates. I'm thinking of the-
David Imel 1:24:12 The 5a had it.
1:24:13 The 5a had it.
Andrew Manganelli 1:24:14 I was...
David Imel 1:24:15 Andrew gets the point.
Andrew Manganelli 1:24:15 I'm so smart.
Marques Brownlee 1:24:16 So do I get a point for Pixel 5?
David Imel 1:24:18 You do not. No.
Marques Brownlee 1:24:18 Why?
David Imel 1:24:19 The Pixel 5 had it. He does.
Marques Brownlee 1:24:20 Yeah.
David Imel 1:24:20 No, no. I said at the beginning you need to get two correct.
Marques Brownlee 1:24:23 But he only got one correct.
David Imel 1:24:24 No, he got both, 5 and 5a. They both have top left.
Marques Brownlee 1:24:26 Oh, wow. Nice. I'm so mad.
Andrew Manganelli 1:24:28 Wow. Well played, Andrew.
David Imel 1:24:30 Did the A4 come out before the 5a?
Marques Brownlee 1:24:33 Before the W-40.
Andrew Manganelli 1:24:35 Oh my God. Ah.
David Imel 1:24:35 The four-
