      Mushroom.

    6. AM

      Mushroom. [laughs]

    7. DI

      [laughs]

    8. AM

      What just happened?

    9. DI

      [laughs]

    10. SP

      [laughs]

    11. DI

Thank you, David, for not making me look insane. [upbeat music] What is up, people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I'm Marques.

    12. AM

      I'm Andrew.

    13. DI

And I'm David. Got you again.

    14. AM

      [laughs]

    15. DI

You guys are never gonna stop falling for that. Marques is once again, um, in Ireland being hot with his Frisbee, as usual. So-

    16. AM

I think it's pretty rainy there.

    17. DI

      Yeah.

    18. SP

      No, it's pretty hot.

    19. DI

Well, he's, he's cooled off. He's cooled off.

    20. AM

      Mm-hmm.

    21. DI

But today, today we got a lot of s- we're gonna s- start spitting some hot fire for you guys. We got a lot of stories. We got AirPods with the camera have officially leaked. We got a video of it, so we can see what they look like. It's pretty weird. There's a bunch of other Apple products that got leaked that we're gonna talk about. YouTube is changing how numbers work once again because views are completely fake, as always. And, uh, we also got an open-source project that Ellis is gonna love.

    22. AM

      [laughs]

    23. DI

      But first-

    24. AM

      Promise

    25. DI

... did you see our eclipse episode? I know we've talked about this, like, 10,000 times.

    26. AM

      [laughs]

    27. DI

But our eclipse episode is pretty cool. It released on Tuesday.

    28. SP

      10,001 now.

    29. DI

So, if you only saw us hyping it for, like, 10,002 times, uh, now you can actually go watch it. It's pretty good.

    30. AM

It's really good. I, I've seen a lot of comments that are like, "This is the only time I've ever seen a video or, like, media of the eclipse that's in, like, real time."

  2. 2:11 – 6:14

    Did they even test this?

    1. DI

got Did They Even Test This? As usual, gonna throw it to Ellis this time.

    2. SP

As usual, I stop doing these 'cause I'm always wrong. It's always [laughs] my fault.

    3. DI

      [laughs]

    4. AM

      [laughs]

    5. SP

Just every single time, there's like, "Did they even test this?" It's, no, I'm just not doing it right.

    6. AM

There's a level of that that's like, we are the tech people. If we can't get something right off the start, like, yes, maybe we missed it, but, like, maybe it's also not programmed that well if we're missing it.

    7. DI

      That's true.

    8. SP

      Ah, it's, it's usually me.

    9. AM

      You're right. You're more-

    10. SP

      I'm, I'm the problem.

    11. AM

      [laughs]

    12. SP

Well, okay, so for me, I'm, I'm now the proud owner, as of, like, two or three months ago, of AirPod Pro 3s. I finally switched from the 2s to the 3s.

    13. DI

      Interesting.

    14. SP

And for all intents and purposes, they're AirPods.

    15. DI

      Yeah.

    16. SP

      AirPods Pro.

    17. AM

      Oh, yeah.

    18. SP

Can't go wrong. Except I have this weird thing where when my laptop is in my backpack, closed, if I don't turn Bluetooth off on my laptop before putting it in my backpack, my AirPods will just constantly disconnect from my phone.

    19. DI

      What?

    20. AM

      Oh.

    21. SP

      Constantly.

    22. AM

      From your phone?

    23. SP

      Yeah.

    24. DI

And are, do you think they're connecting to the-

    25. SP

It's the same with my iPad. If my iPad's in my backpack, I have to put that on, I have to turn Bluetooth off before I put it in my backpack.

    26. DI

      That's weird. That's-

    27. AM

Do you think they're connecting to the laptop a-

    28. DI

      That's why

    29. AM

      ... and that's why it's-

    30. SP

It's my best guess because when I do that, I don't have the connectivity issues. That seems to be the only thing that changes the behavior. I'm sure it's my fault somehow.

  3. 6:14 – 12:55

    New Instagrazam logo

    1. DI

Um, Instagrazam, like Sh- the Shaq movie.

    2. AM

I think the funniest part about this logo, which David's talking about the new Instagram logo, is even when people try and- ... talk, like enunciate it by the letters that looks like it is now because it's so bad, it's still not going, like Instagrazam. It's just, it's Instagazam. There's no R there.

    3. DI

      Insta- oh yeah, Instagazam.

    4. AM

Like, right, like we keep adding extra letters because-

    5. DI

      Right

    6. AM

... the R looks like a Z and it's so confusing at what it-

    7. DI

      Yeah

    8. AM

... I honestly think someone who didn't know about Instagram wouldn't be able to say this out loud.

    9. DI

I also think that Instagram's core user base doesn't know how to write cursive.

    10. AM

      [laughs]

    11. SP

      [laughs]

    12. DI

'Cause they did stop teaching cursive in schools, so.

    13. SP

      I, I can't believe I'm about to defend-

    14. AM

      Do it

    15. SP

      ... Meta.

    16. DI

      Yes.

    17. SP

But like, what are you guys talking about?

    18. AM

      Wow.

    19. SP

What are you guys talking about? Are we really-

    20. DI

The biggest problem is the R looking like a Z. That's the biggest problem.

    21. SP

Dude, it's Instagram. Like, like everyone knows-

    22. DI

      Right

    23. SP

... what Instagram [laughs] is. There's like-

    24. DI

      Yeah, there's the wordmark

    25. SP

... outside of like straight up like North Kor- I bet even in North Korea people know what Instagram [laughs] is, okay?

    26. AM

      [laughs]

    27. DI

I know that people know what it looks like.

    28. SP

Dude, it's one of those words that you, you don't even read anymore. Like, when is the last, like I- obviously it's a subconscious process, but I guarantee you at no point in the last 10 years have you ever actually read the word Instagram. You just see words that are in the vague shape of the word Instagram.

    29. AM

      That is a good point.

    30. DI

      Wow.

  4. 12:55 – 25:52

    YouTube changes how Views work

    1. DI

the big stories this week, YouTube has once again changed how views work, uh, which is, I think, a bad move. Their reasoning... So, so effectively what they did is that a while ago, they changed the way that Shorts views work, so that as soon as a Short starts playing, it counts as a view. The reason they said they did this was because that's how all the other platforms do it, because all the other platforms want to inflate their, uh, success in comparison to YouTube. Now, YouTube is like, "Okay, well, now our mainline videos, our longf- long-form videos," as they're put, even if they're only four minutes, needs to adapt to the way that everybody else is doing it. So now, just like Shorts, the f- minute, the second-

    2. AM

      The frame

    3. DI

      ... the single frame-

    4. AM

      The frame, yeah. [laughs]

    5. DI

The frame a video plays, including autoplay, is counted as a view. Um, I... This is gonna mess everything up for a while. There's gonna be a calibration period.

    6. AM

This is... I mean, we've kind of been through this already, like you said, with Shorts. And I liked, at least when they did it with Shorts, they basically admitted everyone else is inflating them, me too.

    7. DI

      Yeah.

    8. AM

Like, I want to also do this. And while I didn't like it at that point, they s- it, you know, it did kind of make sense with the other platforms, although they're admitting this. I feel like a lot of big tech companies don't like to admit there is other competition.

    9. DI

      Yeah.

    10. AM

Like, Apple famously never likes to talk about anyone else, and I feel like you kind of... It's the power move to just pretend you are you.

    11. DI

      Yeah. Yeah.

    12. AM

Um, so by admitting all that, it kind of feels like a we're a little scared, and they should've been scared in Shorts. Doing it here is this, because they're still doing this thing where it's only public view count.

    13. DI

      Yeah.

    14. AM

Engaged views is still the thing that-

    15. DI

      Yeah

    16. AM

... all of the creators still care about, and now it's now hidden in YouTube Studio.

    17. DI

Yeah, so traditional views, which require a certain amount of seconds of playback, are now called Engaged Views, and, uh, that's what you're gonna be paid based on. That's where all of the metrics come from when you're trying to, when you're trying to become part of the YouTube Partner Program, which we didn't mention last week, but they actually doubled the amount of hours that you need to have, uh, to get into the Partner Program.

    18. AM

That was its own, like, rollercoaster of both of these news things. Uh, I think I've written down here that, um, the new requirements are 10 million short views in 90 days, uh, or 8,000 qualified watch hours, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days is the new requirements to join the Partner Program.

    19. DI

So there's a sh- there's a separate Shorts program, as there is a long-form program.

    20. AM

      Mm-hmm.

    21. DI

The Shorts program is, uh... Let's see. Let me find it here. Da, da, da, da, da. Yep. The Shorts program, if you wanna be paid for Shorts, is you have to get 10 million Shorts views within nine- a 90-day period, which seems like a lot, I'm just gonna say. I know that Shorts are c- like, they're all counted differently-

    22. AM

      Mm-hmm

    23. DI

... and whatever, but you're still just, like, hoping that the algorithm likes you, and you're gonna have to really, really, really be pumping out. Also, by the way, Shorts don't pay for that. They, Shorts really don't pay that much, like, at all. And then now, uh, if you wanna be a part of the YouTube Partner Program for the regular long-form videos, you have to have 8,000 qualified watch hours. So previously, it was 4,000. It's kinda hard to get to, um, and 8,000 seems like a lot now. So it's gonna take new creators quite a lot of time of just making things without getting any monetization before they can start getting paid, which is-

    24. AM

      It-

    25. DI

      ... tough.

    26. AM

It is, and it's... YouTube, like, I'm not gonna sit here and try and defend YouTube that hard, but it is a, a way that people can make money off of making a bunch of content on a place that uploads and stores massive, massive, massive amounts of data.

    27. DI

      Yeah, yeah.

    28. AM

So, like, with so many more people coming on, continually raising the requirements is something they probably have to do at a certain point.

    29. DI

      Yeah.

    30. AM

      Um-

  5. 25:52 – 32:09

    Supreme drop

    1. DI

      a second.

    2. AM

      Okay.

    3. DI

I had thrown this in Slack a little bit earlier, um, this week. I put it in Slack again, so you can check it out now, the link to it. I don't-

    4. AM

      Oh, yeah. [laughs]

    5. DI

      ... buy Supreme stuff.

    6. AM

      [laughs]

    7. DI

But Supre- Supreme dropped its fall and winter 20s- 26 preview, and there are so many products in here that I just never thought would get a Supreme collab. Um, the Kodak Super 8 film camera-

    8. AM

      Yeah

    9. DI

... which I thought they only made, like, 5,000 of, if not less, because they cost, like, $7,000, and it's not that much better than a regular Super 8 camera. There's a Supreme version. Um, [laughs] there is a Supreme version of the classic Dyson, uh-

    10. AM

The Dyson one's kinda [laughs] sick, not gonna lie. [laughs]

    11. DI

Yeah. The, I mean, it, it is kinda cool. It's, like, see-through red, and it's got, like, this half the Supreme logo on it.

    12. AM

      It is-

    13. DI

It says Super for some reason.

    14. AM

The Supreme Dyson will be in, um, every single LA apartment of an influencer who, like, just got popular on Instagram and bought an apartment that's way too big.

    15. DI

      [laughs]

    16. AM

And is not furnished. This will be in the side of-

    17. DI

      This is gonna be-

    18. AM

... every single one of those

    19. DI

... in a lot of those videos. Okay, the one that I actually think is pretty sick is the Analogue Pocket. Um-

    20. AM

      Oh

    21. DI

... if you guys don't remember, the Analogue Pocket is, like, a Game Boy Color, uh, but it's made by the company Analogue, which also is making N64. They're pretty... They're, they're re- There's a red one, and there's a gold one, and they have, like, everything is very metal. I just think they look kinda good. I don't know. Maybe I'm crazy.

    22. AM

I think my favorite is the Christmas version of Gremlins statue. Um, Gremlins the movie.

    23. DI

      [laughs] What the...

    24. AM

It's just, um, the Gremlin in a Santa costume with a Supreme belt holding... What is the Gremlin called before it's a Gremlin? Is it still just a Gremlin?

    25. DI

I think it's just a Gremlin, but not Gremlin.

    26. AM

      The cute Gremlin?

    27. DI

      Yeah.

    28. AM

The pre-food-after-midnight Gremlin or pre-get-wet Gremlin holding a candy cane and a Supreme bag.

    29. DI

      [laughs]

    30. AM

Well, I don't get Supreme. That is the most boomer thing I could've said out loud.

    Apple AirPods leak

    1. DI

is in, like, three or four weeks, but we already got our first look at the camera, quote, unquote, AirPods-

    2. AM

      Oh-

    3. DI

... that we've been talking about for a while now.

    4. AM

I like this 'cause you said official leak, and arguably it couldn't be more official.

    5. DI

      Could not be more official.

    6. AM

      'Cause Apple leaked it.

    7. DI

      Apple leaked it. So, um-

    8. SP

Which is awesome. Wait, this is-

    9. DI

      Yes

    10. SP

... like, exciting. We don't get this very often. [laughs]

    11. DI

This never happens. Someone at Apple is getting more than fired, let me just say that.

    12. SP

Yeah, but, like, everything on Twitter was ... Uh, most of the things I saw about it weren't even about the AirPods. They were just like-

    13. DI

      Yeah

    14. SP

... This is fun again. Like, this feels like-

    15. DI

      Yeah

    16. SP

... 10 years ago, where we got, like-

    17. DI

      Yeah

    18. SP

... random leaks of things and we were all excited.

    19. DI

And the cool thing, too, is it, it's not, like, a, like, a random leak where we didn't know where it came from, right? Like, when leaks happen from Google, they feel very planned.

    20. AM

      Mm-hmm.

    21. DI

You know? It's like, oh, it leaked. Oh, we gave this to a leaker. But when you find things in the system files-

    22. AM

      Yeah

    23. DI

... that's when it's very fun. So in the macOS Tahoe release candidate 26.7, which is, uh, funny 'cause it's not Golden Gate. It's actually [laughs] an older version of macOS that is a release candidate. There was a video file that was demonstrating the new AirPods with visual intelligence. Now, the video did not seem color graded or, like, done at all.

    24. AM

      Mm.

    25. DI

It might have even been, like, a test video. I'm not sure. It also seemed very green skewed. Like, not a polished video like we're used to seeing from Apple.

    26. AM

If I remember, the audio felt really ... Can I play it real fast?

    27. DI

Yeah, sure. You can play it.

    28. AM

With visual intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later. Doesn't that feel, like, very ...

    29. DI

      It feels robotic.

    30. AM

      It feels like placeholder.

  8. 45:26 – 55:58

iPhone 18 launching in March 2027?

    1. DI

event in September. Now they're pretty spaced out. But that leads us into our next little story here, uh, because the standard iPhone 18 might not launch until next spring. So there are now, um, there's a new report that is claiming that the iPhone 18 Standard Edition is going to launch in March of next year. This report comes from, it came from Min-Chi Kuo before, but Pegatron-

    2. AM

      Oh

    3. DI

... as we've talked about various times on this podcast, [laughs] an Apple supplier, held an annual, uh, earnings call and indicated that one of its customers would be changing its usual smartphone shipment schedule. And when you have to tell your investors-

    4. AM

      Yes [laughs]

    5. DI

... during an earnings call that your shipments are going to go down significantly for this quarter-

    6. AM

It's like when a Clix communicate, right?

    7. DI

... you kinda know it's Apple. Yes, a Clix communicator.

    8. SP

      [laughs]

    9. DI

Wow, that's a dig. Uh, you clearly know that that's Apple. So that makes it seem like Apple is going to be pushing, uh, the standard 18. And I have a hot, I have maybe a hot take. I actually think it makes sense from the company's perspective to launch the standard models later, because they've been launching like, the E gets launched later, right?

    10. AM

      Mm-hmm.

    11. DI

But if you launch the Pros first, and you give it, I don't know, five or six months before the standard models launch, that would entice a lot more people who might have just gotten the standard one to get a Pro, because they want the new thing. And, uh, the thing is, the standard editions of all of these phones are getting better and better and better, to the point where why should you get the Pro is becoming a very common question.

    12. AM

I agree with your hot take as a capitalist.

    13. DI

      Yes. I'm saying from App-

    14. AM

      [laughs]

    15. DI

I'm saying from Apple's perspective, it makes sense-

    16. AM

      I'm not saying I'm a capitalist.

    17. SP

      [laughs]

    18. AM

Strike it from the record. I'm saying-

    19. DI

      As a capitalist

    20. AM

... to make as much money as possible-

    21. DI

      Yeah

    22. AM

      ... you are entirely correct.

    23. DI

      That's what I'm saying.

    24. AM

      Yes.

    25. DI

      Yeah.

    26. AM

      All right.

    27. DI

That's what I'm saying. From Apple's perspective, I feel like it makes sense to be like, "If you want our new stuff, it's only the Pros, and in six months you can buy the cheaper one."

    28. AM

And for that entire six months, you'll be on our website looking at them.

    29. DI

      Yes.

    30. AM

      Dreaming of them.

  9. 55:58 – 56:08

    Ad break

    1. AM

      All right, welcome back. Ellis.

    2. SP

      Yeah.

    3. AM

A new trackball just dropped, and I think you're gonna like this.

    4. DI

      I think it just rolled.

  10. 56:08 – 1:08:31

    New Trackball just dropped

    1. SP

      All right.

    2. AM

      ... probably

    3. DI

      The ball

    4. AM

You're right. I also know almost nothing about this except for the article I found and then the website I read, and I am basically all in on this company without knowing anything about them. But-

    5. DI

      Hmm

    6. AM

... um, I'm not a trackball person, but after the Keychron Nape we looked at the other day, I was like, "This thing's pretty sweet," and I now kinda wanna try one, partially because of how cool they look. I know that's not the real reason we should be liking these, but they look pretty sick, and let's be real, half of the reason of a desk setup is just so it looks cool, not so it's actually productivity focused.

    7. DI

      Yeah.

    8. AM

Um, so this is the A+ from a company called, I believe it's pronounced Ploopy-

    9. DI

      Mm-hmm. [laughs]

    10. AM

... which is... I mean, it just gets better as it goes. I already love these people. But, um, so this is the first time I'd heard of them. I did a quick look over their website to see what they're about. They're from Canada. It's two guys. They started in 2019. I believe one of them kind of focuses on the hardware, one of them kind of focuses on the software. And in and out, they are open source. Everything about them is open, from the design files, most of these things are 3D-printed, to all of the software. It seems like you can essentially do whatever you want with these products, which is really cool.

    11. DI

      Mm-hmm.

    12. AM

Um, they make a ton of different computer peripherals, knobs, trackpads. They have a mouse that is essentially four buttons and the little red knob from ThinkPads, like, in the middle to use as your pointer, which is kind of awesome.

    13. DI

      That's amazing.

    14. AM

Um, and this is a new updated trackball they have called the A+. They used to have something called the Adept, which was a six-button trackball, um, kind of in, like, a squircle shape, and this is essentially the update version of that because of how many modifications and notes people had on the previous version. Because they're-

    15. DI

      Oh

    16. AM

... open source, people just created all these different things for it, and they decided to update it. So the previous version had six buttons. This is adding two more, and those two new buttons, which are circular towards the bottom of the ball, are knobs as well that can do by default, um, high resolution horizontal and vertical scrolling, but can be reprogrammed. Um, the modding community had designed a wrist rest for the previous Adept, so now there's a detachable and attachable, or permanently attachable wrist rest for the new A+. Uh, for keyboard enthusiasts, this uses Ke- QMK for programming, but is also configurable with V- Via, Via, I never know how to pronounce it-

    17. DI

      Hmm

    18. AM

... which is awesome. Couple new features they added. Um, gestures, so holding down a button and flicking the trackball in eight different directions can all be programmable to a different feature. Some of them they do are, like, media controls, desktop changing, like swipes, um, cut, copy, paste. They have layers, which is awesome. One of them is just to kind of access the hardware, um, device configuration, so left-hand mode, DPI, LED brightness, um, whether you want high res scrolling or stepped scrolling on the knobs. Um, it's also 99 CAD or 70, like, USD, which is super reasonable. Pre-ordering started today. I actually-

    19. DI

      Wow

    20. AM

... should look at the website to see. Um, but yeah, I've never used any of these products, and I know I went through that really fast, but these come in a bunch of really sick colors.

    21. DI

      Yeah.

    22. AM

Like, the one I'm looking at, there's a, a yellow one with a blue ball. There's a white one with a blue. There's red and black on Marques. Now-

    23. DI

      These look amazing

    24. AM

... they're 3D printed, so it's very obviously the finish is, like, 3D print-esque. But from afar I think they look great. Everything looks really ergonomical, like, I think this makes me wanna use a trackball. I think it looks so sick.

    25. DI

      Yeah.

    26. AM

It almost makes me wanna buy four different ones to match the different [laughs] keyboard colors that I have.

    27. DI

      Mm-hmm.

    28. AM

Um, but I just love ha- even though I haven't used them, having the chance to highlight a not giant company, but rather what feels like a passion product.

    29. DI

      Yeah.

    30. AM

      A community-driven passion product-

  11. 1:08:31 – 1:17:48

    Trivia Scores

    1. DI

that's it for story this week, but we're gonna get into trivia answers now. [upbeat music]

    2. SP

      Guys-

    3. DI

      I'm on game

    4. SP

... while CollegeHumor was in its early days, some developers who worked at its parent company developed what video hosting site? [tense music]

    5. DI

      CollegeHumor.

    6. SP

CollegeHumor was so much fun back in the day.

    7. AM

I'm, like... I'm just throwing a random video site out there from that era.

    8. SP

Site. All right, guys. Two answers. Whoa. Everyone over 30 listening right now is about to be like, "Oh."

    9. AM

[laughs] Is, you're gonna be very confused by what I ... I don't know.

    10. SP

And the answer is such a letdown. All right. What do you guys got?

    11. DI

I put Funny or Die. [buzzer]

    12. AM

That was actually way better. I put Albino Blacksheep.

    13. SP

      Whoa.

    14. DI

I don't even know what that is.

    15. AM

      Really?

    16. SP

      I'm not even 30 and I'm whoa-ing. [laughs]

    17. DI

      I'm 31. I don't know what that is.

    18. AM

Oh, what was the ... I th- Was that where the badger song started?

    19. SP

      I don't remember that one.

    20. AM

Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger.

    21. SP

      No, sorry. Not 30.

    22. AM

      Badger, badger, badger, badger.

    23. DI

      Mushroom.

    24. AM

      Mushroom.

    25. SP

      Mushroom. [laughs] What just happened?

    26. DI

      [laughs]

    27. AM

Thank you, David, for not making me look insane.

    28. SP

Yeah. At least one person is driving right now.

    29. AM

      Homestar Runner?

    30. SP

      No.
