Sober October ends: fitness challenge fallout and competitiveness kicks in

    1. AS

      Five.

    2. JR

Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo. Five, four, three, two, one. Boom. It's over, boys.

    3. BK

      Cheers.

    4. JR

      We did it.

    5. TS

      Cheers. Cheers.

    6. JR

      Sober October-

    7. TS

      Cheers, buddy.

    8. BK

      Cheers.

    9. JR

... has come to an end.

    10. BK

      Cheers. (laughs)

    11. TS

      (laughs) Cheers.

    12. JR

It is now No Remember November.

    13. TS

      Here we go.

    14. BK

Better November. No Remember November. I like that.

    15. JR

First of all, (clears throat) whose fucking stupid idea was it to do this goddamn fitness challenge, Tommy Buns?

    16. BK

      (laughs)

    17. TS

      That was awful.

    18. JR

Last, last year, last year, we did a, a nice, calm 15 hot yogas.

    19. TS

      Yeah.

    20. JR

It was not that big a deal.

    21. BK

      How is that so awful?

    22. JR

      Not even close.

    23. BK

      Not even close to this.

    24. TS

      Not even close.

    25. JR

No, this was so much more difficult.

    26. TS

      And I didn't expect this-

    27. BK

      Oh.

    28. TS

      ... but I like it.

    29. BK

      Yeah.

    30. TS

I liked ... I think it's fun to be competitive with your friends.

  2. 3:1555:25

How the scoring worked: heart-rate zones, points-per-minute, and why cardio won

    1. JR

      So, so peop- so people-

    2. BK

      I love this.

    3. JR

... who don't know what the points are, we'll explain. If you get 70% of your max heart rate, that's three points a minute. If you get 80% of your max fr- heart rate or above, that's four points a minute. So we all tried to stay in the 80 range 'cause that's where you get your money.

    4. TS

      Right.

    5. JR

That's where the, that's where the points-

    6. BK

      So you had to-

    7. TS

      So you had to.

    8. JR

      You get two-

    9. BK

So a heavy workout for an hour in that range, from 80 to 100, a heavy workout is, gives you 240 points. So if you-

    10. TS

But that's if you're maxxed out for 60 minutes.

    11. BK

If you're, if you're maxxed out.

    12. JR

      Yeah.

    13. BK

That just gives you context to what a 600-

    14. TS

      Which was easier-

    15. JR

One day, I got ni- I did a 935-point workout.

    16. BK

Jesus. It was over after that. We ... Tom and I were talking.

    17. TS

That was the beginning of the end. Yeah.

    18. BK

I was in New York and called him. I was like, "Dude, he's just fucking going dragging elk around."

    19. TS

      Yeah.

    20. BK

"He has it on the whole time. He's dragging elk around."

    21. JR

No, that wasn't even that one.

    22. TS

      No, that was another one.

    23. JR

That was, that was, uh, the, the elk hu- hunting day.

    24. TS

Yeah, that was a different one.

    25. BK

      Yeah.

    26. JR

It was mostly, uh, hiking mountains day. That was, like, a 600-point day.

    27. BK

Oh, no. That's when it, when, when you were there and you were actually working out in the mountains as well- Yeah, we thought-

    28. JR

      Yeah.

    29. BK

... you had your stops. I was like, I was like, "What the fuck? You're ..." Uh, like, if I would ... I would've been like, "Guys, I'm out coming. This is ..."

    30. JR

      (laughs)

  3. 5:3610:18

Late-night uploads, ‘tweaker workouts,’ and tracker paranoia/cheating theories

    1. BK

No, no, no, fuck Ari. Fuck y- y- I gotta say this. Fuck you with you posting your goddamn workouts in the middle of the night. It was so deflating to go to sleep going- Yeah, I wanted, I watched you go to bed.

    2. TS

      I've got a 200-point lead-

    3. BK

      Of course.

    4. TS

... and then wake up and go, "How am I 600 points behind?"

    5. JR

      (laughs)

    6. BK

      I tried to break spirit.

    7. TS

      It was fun.

    8. BK

Because that's the other thing. Ari went through, when he got this tracker, and he found out all the work, workarounds. So he would build up work points in his tracker and then he'd Bluetooth it in the middle of the fucking night.

    9. JR

      Yeah.

    10. AS

No, I'd also do the workouts then.

    11. TS

      He would work out?

    12. JR

Oh, he was doing workouts at, like, 10:00, 10:00 PM.

    13. BK

I'd come home from the cellar at 1:30 AM, and then I'd be like-

    14. TS

      Yeah.

    15. BK

... "Let me change and go out there." That was the worst.

    16. TS

Dude, that was so- He would go out to the gym at 2:00 in the morning.

    17. BK

Oh, you were going at 2:00?

    18. TS

      Yeah.

    19. BK

      Yeah.

    20. ... I thought you were uploading in the middle of the night.

    21. TS

      No.

    22. AS

Oh, you could see the time, the time that he was actually doing it.

    23. TS

Yeah, it's the freaks were out.

    24. AS

      Yeah.

    25. TS

      It was the tweakers.

    26. BK

For a second, Tom and I thought that because Ari was so out of shape, his heart rate was just skyrocketing.

    27. AS

      (laughs)

    28. TS

      (laughs)

    29. BK

Like Ralphie walking up the stairs. And then Ari and I went on a walk, on a hike, and I was in the yellow the whole time and Ari was barely in green. And I was like, "Oh, he's in, he's in really good shape." And then you did that day with Joe-

    30. AS

The best is that he really bought that theory really hard.

  4. 10:1855:25

Tom’s (attempted) age hack and other ‘cheat’ ideas

    1. TS

That's... Yeah, you get that 400. Can I tell you my other cheat?

    2. BK

      Yeah.

    3. TS

Uh, okay, I figured out pretty quickly that the way they do your max heart rate is, um, your age minus a c- no, a certain number minus your age. And then you, you get it from there. Then when you actually run it'll move up or down from there. But right away, I was like, "Oh, okay." So I entered my age and, before I started, I wrote to the MyZone people and said, "My idiot wife wrote my age in wrong. I'm actually 74." (laughs) Uh, "I was born in '44 not '74 and '44 the other way." And they're like, "Oh, all right, we'll change it for you, sir."

    4. AS

      What?

    5. JR

      Whoa.

    6. TS

      Yeah.

    7. JR

So you put that you had a 70-year-old man profile?

    8. TS

      Yeah, yeah. Um-

    9. BK

      Hold on.

    10. TS

      Yeah.

    11. BK

Just wait, hold on, hold on.

    12. JR

      It's a good move.

    13. BK

Hold on, the whole month, hold on, the whole month you worked out as a 74-year-old man?

    14. TS

No, I could've done that. The problem is, I'd already set it as the other thing. And so it'll say you have to then... You have to have a brand new thing. It didn't work.

    15. BK

      Oh. So you're stuck as a 44?

    16. JR

      Ah.

    17. TS

      Yeah. It would've been great-

    18. JR

So you gotta stick with your age?

    19. TS

It would've been great for me though just to walk around casually earning yellow the whole time.

    20. JR

      Whoa.

    21. TS

      Which I could've gotten.

    22. JR

      That would've been insane.

    23. TS

Yeah, that was definitely a good cheat in my mind. That- when that went wrong, I was like, "Fuck."

    24. JR

Yeah, I feel like that one would've disqualified you.

    25. TS

      Oh, for sure.

    26. BK

      100%.

    27. JR

      (laughs)

    28. TS

I would never have told you that. By the way, I would never have told you that.

    29. BK

I'm still on the fence with these fucking five-hour hikes he was taking.

    30. JR

Well, listen, man. Hiking is work. All right?

  5. 12:1122:13

Training realities: hills vs machines, minimalist shoes, fatigue, soreness, and time management

    1. JR

Dude, my hardest workouts scored the shittiest. My hardest workouts are running the hills and lifting weights. If I run the hills, it gives me-... almost 40 points less than if I just rode a bike or rode an elliptical machine-

    2. TS

      'Cause you're not-

    3. JR

      Stayed in the zone.

    4. ... 'cause it's so f-

    5. TS

And you go up and down, you have to pause.

    6. JR

And the way I do it is I run hard and I take breaks. I take, like, a deep breath when I get to the top of one hill.

    7. TS

He strokes his dick the whole time too, so that's-

    8. JR

      I rub-

    9. TS

      ... difficult. Yeah.

    10. JR

      I rub my balls together-

    11. 12 points. (laughs)

    12. ... with my left hand and I give myself another, you know, sprint until I can't... I have, like, these points where I know I can make it too if I go full clip.

    13. TS

      Yeah.

    14. JR

And then I try to extend it a little bit and I keep trying to extend it. But when I do that, I'm going in the red. And on top of going in the red, um, I'm... It's like with lifting weights, like you need recovery time.

    15. TS

      Yeah.

    16. JR

And in recovery time, your heart rate crashes way low. You could just do the elliptical machine and just put it at like 15 resistance so it's got some, some give to it-

    17. TS

      Yeah.

    18. JR

... and you start sweating. And then you get into a zone. You just get into a really-

    19. Yeah, and you just keep sweating.

    20. ... it's way easier.

    21. Uh-huh.

    22. But it's... A machine makes it all easy.

    23. TS

      But those-

    24. JR

Because you just get into a zone, you just gotta be strong.

    25. TS

I think the thing with those though, I mean, even though, like, if you do the intense workout, recovery's gonna be, you know, you're gonna need it, you're gonna feel it.

    26. JR

      Yeah.

    27. TS

If you do those for like days in a row-

    28. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    29. TS

... there is still a fatigue, right? Like 'cause you're-

    30. JR

      Oh, yeah.

  6. 22:1355:25

Mental & emotional effects: sleep, reduced anxiety, endorphin ‘pill,’ and tech detox theory

    1. BK

Dude, but how about those sleeps though? I was sleeping like a fucking perfect person.

    2. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    3. BK

      Like a baby.

    4. JR

      Yeah.

    5. TS

      Most the time.

    6. JR

You know what I noticed? And what- it's a big one for me.

    7. TS

      What?

    8. JR

It really might make me change the way I live, is zero anxiety.

    9. BK

      Yes.

    10. JR

      Zero negative chatter.

    11. TS

      Exhausted.

    12. That's what I found.

    13. JR

      Zero chatter.

    14. BK

      Well...

    15. JR

      There's just something of-

    16. TS

      I found it too.

    17. JR

... there's a realistic view of the world that you get from rigorous exercise.

    18. TS

      Uh-huh.

    19. JR

And- and ya- and this is my theory, and it's- I'm not a biologist, but I think that there's- we have too much of a history as a species of constantly avoiding danger, and I think we live in a place that's far too safe for our natural instincts. And so we're constantly looking for things to be bad-

    20. BK

      Mm-hmm.

    21. JR

... we're looking for things to be dangerous or confronting- confronting our own mortality and putting it on the back burner and letting all that weirdness manifest itself in all sorts of other fears. Fears about the government, fears about economics, and fears about this. And I think we're dealing with this as human beings all the time, and I think there's only a certain amount you can do. And I think when you have rigorous exercise, it puts in perspective what that certain amount actually is and what you can control as a person. That you can- you can just chill your body out and look at this whole thing for what it is. It is what it is. You know, we- we're gonna be fine or we're not, and then we- it won't matter. But this- this- this whole thing that we do when we do this, we do this because our body has a need for exercise. It has a built in need. It's got an engine that needs to be pushed, and if you don't push it, it starts fucking with you. It starts fucking with you and asking you weird questions like, "Who the fuck does that guy think he is?" Like it wants to start problems.

    22. TS

      (laughs)

    23. JR

It wants to get upset at things that don't make any sense to be upset at. It wants conflict. There's a part of you that wants conflict because it thinks that conflict is a part of the programming, 'cause it's been our way for millions of years. So whatever the fuck we were then to whatever the fuck we are now, there's been conflict along the way, people have been trying to eat us, things have been trying to kill us, and this is the only time ever that there's none of that. And I think the only time you could see things with perspective is when you blow out all the biological shit, whether it's jerk off... Like how many times have you jerked off and then had a totally different opinion-

    24. BK

      (laughs)

    25. JR

... of- of- of a person, about... (laughs) Like you've jerked off and not called people.

    26. BK

      (laughs)

    27. JR

Like, "Why would I call this person after I just jerked off?"

    28. TS

      (laughs)

    29. JR

Like, no, now I see- I see what this hole is. This is some weird biological trick.

    30. TS

      Ugh.

  7. 48:121:01:40

Big tangent: hunting stories, moose/elk, grizzly encounters, and polar bear fear

    1. JR

I saw Adam Greentree, like, kill some elk in s- wherever the fuck he is these days and a bear claimed it. Mm-hmm.

    2. TS

      Did you see that?

    3. JR

      Yeah, he shot a moose.

    4. BK

      Jesus Christ.

    5. JR

      And it was in, uh-

    6. TS

The bear just went on. He's like, "This is mine."

    7. JR

      Yeah, he shot a moose-

    8. TS

"This is mine. I pissed on it and I dug it out."

    9. JR

... in the Yukon and a grizzly bear claimed it and covered it with dirt.

    10. BK

      Right away?

    11. JR

Yeah, the entire moose. No, he, he shot it. They took part of it. See, what... A moose is probably like 1800 pounds. They're so big. They're like... A big elk, like a Rocky Mountain elk's like 800 pounds. That's a big one. A moose is 1000 pounds bigger than that when it's fully mature. So some-

    12. TS

      Whoa.

    13. JR

      And that's what Adam shot.

    14. BK

      God.

    15. JR

He shot a gigantic moose. So they can only carry so much of it out. Like this, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pounds of meat. 1800 pounds moose might be seven, 800 pounds of it is meat.

    16. BK

      Fuck. Wow.

    17. JR

You know? So you have to take it out in loads. So if you have two guys-

    18. BK

      Oh, Lord.

    19. JR

... right? You're taking out several loads. So they took out one pack out and then they came back and a giant grizzly bear had claimed it and covered it up.

    20. BK

And the grizzly bear was still in the area?

    21. JR

Oh, yeah. He covered up the moose.

    22. BK

Oh, dude, Adam Greenree is one of my favorite people to follow on Instagram.

    23. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    24. BK

But I know that no one likes when there's a lot of-

    25. ... little bleeps in a story. But when I go on Adam Greentree and he's got a hundred little dots, I go, "Oh, this is gonna be a good one."

    26. JR

      Yeah. It's adam.greentree on, uh, Instagram. And he's a, he's a bow hunter from Australia. And Australia's-

    27. BK

      He's an ass.

    28. JR

... an interesting place because one of the reasons why, I mean, he's, he's just a real smart guy. And a really, uh, uh, he's like, he's the real deal. Uh-

    29. BK

A real deal in every way. And I'll, I'll pimp him out.

    30. JR

      Just as a person.
