Wiz’s MMA lifestyle and the “shredded” transformation
- JRJoe Rogan
(clears throat) (humming) And we're going live.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yes, sir. (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs) What you got on ... Social media?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm. People love you, bro.
- JRJoe Rogan
People love you too. Oh, we're live? We're doing it right now.
- WKWiz Khalifa
I'm super excited.
- JRJoe Rogan
So we, we've, uh, gawed ... What's the word? Gawked? What's the word when you ogled over someone's body?
- NANarrator
Sure.
- JRJoe Rogan
Well, dude, you got jacked.
- WKWiz Khalifa
(laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
You went from being skinny to shredded.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
You're pretty serious about MMA training, man.
- WKWiz Khalifa
It's really just about, like, the lifestyle. You know what I mean? You're a martial artist, so you know, freaking, the mind and the body and the soul go together, so-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. For sure.
- WKWiz Khalifa
All these things, I'm learning about them, I'm, I'm able to put them all together. You can't be a complete person until everything is together.
- JRJoe Rogan
Ooh.
- WKWiz Khalifa
So, um, you know, spiritually I've already ascended above my peers. Now I'm taking my body up there.
- JRJoe Rogan
How are you doing that spiritually? Through that giant jug of weed you got on the table? (laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
Exactly. (laughs) Stay high.
- 0:56 – 2:47
Khalifa Kush, strain loyalty, and how much weed Wiz smokes
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, for the folks only listening, Wiz brought, literally, like, a, a Mason jar-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Uh-huh.
- JRJoe Rogan
... filled with weed.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yep. Yep. Yep. And it's, like, halfway full 'cause I was in the studio.
- JRJoe Rogan
Do you have specific strains that you like?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, I smoke the KK, Khalifa Kush.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, you got your own shit?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mmm.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, absolutely. 'Cause I, I got tired of smoking all different types of weed, um. It's like a drink, you know what I'm saying?
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm, right.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Like alcohol, people only drink dark liquor, whiskey or-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
I only smoke KK.
- JRJoe Rogan
Only KK?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yep.
- JRJoe Rogan
Well, if you mix it up though, you'll get a big hit, right?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, if, if you switch it up to somebody else's stuff, you're like, "Woo."
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, your body's not n- ready for it.
- WKWiz Khalifa
My head will go crazy and-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
... like, I'll really feel it. You'll see me, like, over in the corner stoned somewhere. (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
I only have to smoke KK, that's it.
- JRJoe Rogan
That's the weed, weird thing about weed, right? Like, you, you get used to-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
... a certain strain.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah. Like, I'll get physically, like, ill if I don't smoke my strain. I'll get runny nose-
- 2:47 – 4:02
Weed normalization, parenting optics, and the messy legal landscape
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm happy how legal weed is these days because it's like, I would ... I- My son had a spring concert yesterday and I would feel like shit back in the day walking in there smelling like bud.
- JRJoe Rogan
Ha.
- WKWiz Khalifa
'Cause he goes to private school-
- JRJoe Rogan
Right, right. (laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
... and it's like ... You know what I mean? It's a reflection on him.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
So it's like, you know, you got the weed head dad-
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- WKWiz Khalifa
... blah, blah, blah, this kind of other thing. But it's like nowadays, that shit is cool, like-
- JRJoe Rogan
No one cares.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Nobody gives a fuck.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, it, I've seen it happen 'cause I have a 22-year-old daughter, but then I also have an 11 and a nine-year-old.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Uh-huh.
- JRJoe Rogan
And with the 22-year-old, when she was growing up, it was all weird. It was weird.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
It was like, if you were a ... you were a loser if you were smoking weed.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Bro, playdates, you know what I'm saying? Like-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, people coming over your house, you got weed at the house.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, bro.
- JRJoe Rogan
Parents get weird.
- WKWiz Khalifa
I live, like, right up the street from a school so, like, I'm getting real technical with it, like ... (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
I'm in a school zone. (laughs) You know what I'm saying? Like-
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, legitimately, yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Bro, like, I could be-
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
... not here right now.
- JRJoe Rogan
Incarcerated.
- WKWiz Khalifa
For real. (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. Did you see that lady they locked up today in Dallas? Did you see that shit?
- 4:02 – 5:31
CBD as medicine, edibles going mainstream, and dosage pitfalls
- JRJoe Rogan
My wife's mom uses it for arthritis. It's great for older folks.
- WKWiz Khalifa
CBD is the shit. My, uh, my ... I was about to call her my ex-baby's mom. She's still my baby's mom.
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
But she has another baby on the way in her new relationship, but she's able to take, uh, CBD during her pregnancy to help her, uh-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
... her nausea and all of that stuff.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
So it's like, why would you hate on CBD, bro?
- JRJoe Rogan
No, it's amazing.
- WKWiz Khalifa
It's the shit. It's-
- JRJoe Rogan
My friend's son has some seizures. He has, like-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
... some sort of epileptic seizure.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mmm. Mmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
Give him CBD, it's gone.
- WKWiz Khalifa
That's amazing, man.
- JRJoe Rogan
Gives it every day, he doesn't have them anymore.
- WKWiz Khalifa
That's amazing. I love that, though.
- JRJoe Rogan
It's incredible. It's-
- WKWiz Khalifa
That's so good.
- JRJoe Rogan
It's almost, you feel like you're lying.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right.
- JRJoe Rogan
It does so many different things-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right.
- JRJoe Rogan
... that when you talk about weed, you feel like you're lying.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah. I mean, like, these days, in this day and age, I was just telling somebody the other day, smoking pot is gonna be old school, like, you know what I mean? We're still gonna do it, but it's totally moving towards just ingesting it and-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
... rubbing it on and all that shit, so people-
- JRJoe Rogan
Sprays.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, so people are less scared-
- 5:31 – 7:09
Joe’s THC-pill ‘reality break’ and the jiu-jitsu predator story
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, I had a friend who made THC pills.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yep.
- JRJoe Rogan
And I was taking them at a party once and it was a party for a jujitsu tournament.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Okay.
- JRJoe Rogan
So, 'cause it was a jujitsu tournament and then there was this party afterwards, and, uh, by the time the pills had kicked in, I, I have no idea how much was in there, 'cause it was, like, some handmade shit that this guy put together himself-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Exactly, yeah, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... little capsules that you buy.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right. Right, right, right, right.
- JRJoe Rogan
It was as high as I've ever been in my life.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yep.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, to the point where I wasn't even seeing people. I was seeing, like, a two-dimensional cutout of the person, and then behind them, I was seeing, like their true intention, their soul-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Oh, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... like, peeking out.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yeah.Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
I was really high.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Fuck.
- JRJoe Rogan
And I was talking to this one dude, and he was just ... Uh, he's a, he was a high-level jujitsu guy who was r- he was really odd.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
It was a very strange feeling I got talking to this cat.
- WKWiz Khalifa
(laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
And then, um, like, a month later he was on the run for rape. Yeah, he, uh, had raped some woman and then he escaped. And then he was o- so addicted to jujitsu, the story was that he started training again with a fake name. But he was, like, this high-level black belt, and there's only that, this ... Especially back then when this happened, this is like the early 2000s, there's only a certain number of high-level black belts that are running around.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right.
- JRJoe Rogan
So he put on this fake Brazilian name and started training in, like, the Pacific Northwest.
- WKWiz Khalifa
What the fuck?
- JRJoe Rogan
And then, uh, but he's strangling black belts and everybody's like, "What the fuck is, who is this guy?"
- WKWiz Khalifa
Jesus Christ.
- JRJoe Rogan
So people asked, and someone took a picture of him, and they go, "That guy's wanted for rape."
- WKWiz Khalifa
Oh, shit.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, but I remember talking to him on these THC pills being like, uh, like some ... "There's some wiring that's not correct here with this."
- WKWiz Khalifa
Oh, fuck.
- 7:09 – 9:08
Mushrooms, reading intentions, and why Wiz doesn’t overdo psychedelics
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, they do, bro. I did mushrooms and they exposed a lot.
- JRJoe Rogan
Woo.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yep. Do you do 'shrooms?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yep. I fuck with mushrooms 'cause-
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
... that's what happened with me when I was on mushrooms. I was able to see people's true intentions.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
'Cause being a rapper and shit like that, you know, you'd be having to peel back the layers.
- JRJoe Rogan
Layers and layers and layers-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
... and crips.
- WKWiz Khalifa
And I was trying to peel my own layers back (laughs) just for my own-
- JRJoe Rogan
Sure.
- WKWiz Khalifa
... personal.
- JRJoe Rogan
Everyone is, right?
- WKWiz Khalifa
And I ended up ... Yeah, yep. And I ended up being, like, backstage somewhere and I was like, "Fuck." I was like, "I'm around all these people and, like, I really see their true intentions." And then I was like, "I see what crowd they are," and it was like ... I felt like I was separated. You know what I mean?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
And it was like ... I was on a boat all the way out here, and they were all on a, on a, all on an island partying, and then I was like, "Damn-"
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
"... I can see what's going on over there." But it was cool. It, uh, it h- ... I, like, m- ... I do mushrooms every now and then. I don't fuck with it all the time. I, I haven't done them in, like, three years 'cause they help you see shit like that. So it's like for me, I'll take that experience and I'll just live with it.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
I don't need to keep going through it over and over. Like, you probably seen that dude and was like, "Oh, shit, now I know people who are rapey as- (laughs) as soon as I see them."
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
(laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
But I knew he was dangerous.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, he was a legitimately dangerous person. Like not just-
- WKWiz Khalifa
That's insane, bro.
- JRJoe Rogan
Not just a trained killer, but he was dangerous, like, the way he thought about things.
- 9:08 – 14:25
Why fight culture produces high-character people (and why fans watch)
- JRJoe Rogan
When you think about the world of fighting and competition, I mean, you're dealing with people that are taking the biggest risks. They don't, they don't have to do that.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right.
- JRJoe Rogan
This is, like, a choice.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right.
- JRJoe Rogan
They could get a job. The choice is, I wanna get a job trying to fuck up other people-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... who have a job trying to fuck up people.
- WKWiz Khalifa
(exhales)
- JRJoe Rogan
The killers, the trained killers just going after each other.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right, right.
- JRJoe Rogan
And when you're around those dudes, one of the things you w- ... One of the things you realize very early on, you ha- ... You can have your preconceived notions about them being, like, m- like, mean people or-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
... violent people.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right.
- JRJoe Rogan
They're people of character.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yes, sir.
- JRJoe Rogan
You have to have extreme character to pull off what they do.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yep.
- JRJoe Rogan
And some of the best people I've ever met in my life are fighters.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yep, yep.
- JRJoe Rogan
They, they're, they're a different breed of human being.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
They chose that path. They chose it. No one's-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yep.
- JRJoe Rogan
No one's forcing 'em. We're not in war.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right.
- JRJoe Rogan
They decide to go and do that, and like-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
... "Oof." That's why it's so exciting to watch, right?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right.
- 14:25 – 16:17
Weed + training synergy, gym culture, and how Wiz gained 35 pounds
- JRJoe Rogan
That's a good combination of getting to the bottom of shit, is weed and martial arts.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yup.
- JRJoe Rogan
That's a good combination.
- WKWiz Khalifa
100%.
- JRJoe Rogan
It really is.
- WKWiz Khalifa
I do ... Like, a lot of my thinking is just from, like, after I train, I just sit there and just think about nothing but ... You know what I mean?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Ideas come to me. How to deal with situations, you know what I mean?
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Because it just ... I don't know. It just happens like that. It just flows.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. Yeah, it flows.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
And I think, like, the training helps you get all the bullshit off your back.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right. Hell yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yup. Especially for me too, 'cause like, I party a lot.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- WKWiz Khalifa
And I'm in the studio till, like, 5:00, 6:00 in the morning, and I'm drinking and stuff like that. So, to just be going down that path and doing that every day, bro, I look crazy. I feel crazy. (laughs) Like-
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
... I have to get that off of me, like, out of me. You know what I mean?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
That's why your gym is crazy, bro. I need to do something like that for myself.
- JRJoe Rogan
It's nice to have a place.
- WKWiz Khalifa
At some point. Like, that's how I look at you, like the OG. So it's like, I'm not going to go do it tomorrow, like, "Hey, everybody build me a gym."
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
But, you know, eventually, that's the goal. When I look back, I'll be like, "I seen Joe's gym and that's, that's what made me."
- JRJoe Rogan
Well, dude, you train hard. I've seen your videos.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, I w- I w- I, I get to work.
- JRJoe Rogan
You, you work out at Unbreakable?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yup.
- 16:17 – 20:12
Sparring with legends and the ‘play’ style of Thai sparring
- JRJoe Rogan
And s- doesn't Snoop train there too?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
There's this video of Snoop sparring. He's sparring Daniel Sarrafian.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah. Daniel's fucking crazy. You ever met that dude? (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
He's a beast. Yeah, I know that guy.
- WKWiz Khalifa
(laughs) Yeah, yo, Daniel is crazy.
- JRJoe Rogan
I've called his fights before.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Daniel-
- JRJoe Rogan
He's a tank.
- WKWiz Khalifa
He is crazy. He love-
- JRJoe Rogan
That guy's a tank.
- WKWiz Khalifa
... nuts. His thing is like, "Yo, I gotta get hit." Pshhh. I'm like, "All right, Daniel." You know?
- JRJoe Rogan
He's gotta get hit to wake himself up?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, go ahead.
- JRJoe Rogan
Wow. The- there is-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Take those hits, Danny.
- JRJoe Rogan
There's Snoop sparring with him.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, and Snoop-
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
... was going at it too. He was trying to take him out.
- JRJoe Rogan
Dude, Snoop throws some good shots, man.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Oh, that's them right there.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, Snoop's got-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Uh.
- JRJoe Rogan
... skills. He really does.
- WKWiz Khalifa
I'm glad Daniel ducked that one. Uh, uh.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, I mean, look-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Get him, Snoop. Oh.
- JRJoe Rogan
I guarantee you Snoop would fuck up-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Look, that's funny right there.
- 20:12 – 23:17
Kicking mechanics, Taekwondo’s ‘crazy dexterity,’ and technique as a universal law
- WKWiz Khalifa
You got some crazy kicks.
- JRJoe Rogan
Thank you.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah. I seen, uh, what was it? A side kick that you did?
- JRJoe Rogan
Probably turning side kicks.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, you gotta teach me that.
- JRJoe Rogan
I'll teach you that.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah. I want the-
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
I just need the form, 'cause I'm learning just a regular side kick, like a slide or, you know what I mean?
- JRJoe Rogan
You should go to, like, a Taekwondo school. They'd be the best at showing you how to do it.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
I'll definitely show you how, but-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yep.
- JRJoe Rogan
... if you need a place to train, find, like, a really good Taekwondo school.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
'Cause one thing, Taekwondo has some things that, you know, won't work in MMA if you're y- adding take-downs and-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
... punches to the face, but because they don't punch to the face in tournaments-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
... you get used to doing crazy kicks.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Crazy-ass kicks. Creative.
- JRJoe Rogan
So they have a lot of weird d- a lot of weird leg dexterity stuff.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
And if you get good at that stuff, I think that's... Like, if I had a kid that wanted to fight, I would say, "Let's just do some, um, Kyokushin or some Taekwondo first."
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
"Just do some karate, something where you, you're developing leg dexterity."
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah. Hell yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Then, as you get a little older, then move you into Muay Thai."
- 23:17 – 48:28
Wiz’s songwriting workflow, studio setup, and redefining “work” as passion
- JRJoe Rogan
When, when you write, do you write things out or do you, do you do it out in your head?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, I know Jay-Z supposedly doesn't write anything, right?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-mm.
- JRJoe Rogan
He just keeps it all in his head-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... which is incredible-
- WKWiz Khalifa
It's awesome.
- JRJoe Rogan
... that he can do that.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Right.
- JRJoe Rogan
It's kind of in- insane.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, yeah. Yep. I have, I have different processes. So, like, for me, I kinda... I, I have melodies. Like, I'll sing and I'll rap. So it's a lot easier for me to just have a melody in my head and make up the words as I go. But if I'm writing lyrics, like writing words down where I actually rap it-... that's when I'm gonna use the paper, you know?
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- WKWiz Khalifa
But there's different ways to do it, 'cause I- honestly, this is what my studio setup looks like. It's like a chair. The mic is right here. I don't go in the booth or anything, and my engineer's sitting right there. So, it's like we're, we're coming up with it as w- as we go, like...
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- WKWiz Khalifa
I'll take a little break, just write something down, and then I'll just jump, jump straight back on it. You know what I mean? So, it, there's different techniques, though, 'cause a lot of the time, sometimes I won't write shit. I'll just go and just make it up and just keep going, keep flowing, or there's times where I could just lay a melody and then write the words to it later. So, it's just different, you know, ways to approach it.
- JRJoe Rogan
So, you just do it based on however you feel that day?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm. Whatever the track really calls for. It's like, if, if the song is something that I get instant inspiration, I'm like, "Oh, I'm gonna knock it out right now." Or if something that I wanna live with for a little bit, I'll just do as much as I'm happy with at that point, and then move on to the next thing.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Come back to it later and just make sure everything is fresh. I like to keep everything fresh, keep it fun, keep it loose, and I don't really overthink anything. If it's not there, then I just go, go away from it and find something that's more fun. (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
Hell, yeah. (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
That's a, it's a beautiful freedom to be able-
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
... to do that.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Mm-hmm.
- JRJoe Rogan
You know?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Y- you obviously picked the right fucking job.
- WKWiz Khalifa
(laughs)
- 48:28 – 1:04:38
Early ambition: third grade rapper dreams, Pittsburgh grind, and first deal at 16
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, how, how old were you when you knew you wanted to be a rapper?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Uh, I think I was in third grade.
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
So, real shit. (laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs) (clapping)
- WKWiz Khalifa
I think I was in third grade.
- JRJoe Rogan
That's amazing.
- WKWiz Khalifa
I wanted, I wanted to be a Ninja Turtle and I wanted to be a rapper.
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
And I think a rapper was, like, a little bit more realistic. I'm working on being a Ninja Turtle now.
- JRJoe Rogan
(laughs)
- WKWiz Khalifa
(laughs)
- JRJoe Rogan
That's amazing.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Third grade.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, third grade, I was-
- JRJoe Rogan
How old were you in third grade again? You're nine?
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah. You nine? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. That's when I started writing my first raps and shit.
- JRJoe Rogan
Dude, that is hilarious.
- WKWiz Khalifa
Yeah, I was, like, watching music videos. And I remember seeing, like, Puffy and Biggie and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony is, like, one of my favorite groups.
- JRJoe Rogan
Wow.
- WKWiz Khalifa
So it was like, "Yo, if I can do that, I'll be a'ight." And then, um, by the time I was, like, 13, uh, that's when the internet was really popular, so you could download, like, instrumentals and shit like that. So you didn't have to, like, have beats or anything.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- WKWiz Khalifa
And then they started introducing, you know, uh, at home equipment. They had, like, little TASCAM four-track little bullshit thing that you could ... You know what I mean?
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- WKWiz Khalifa
So I started fucking around on that, like, doing my own little home studio. Then FruityLoops came out and started making beats. Cool Edit Pro was, like, the, the program back then before Pro Tools. And yeah, that's how I got my start, like, just in the fucking ... In the, in the crib, just putting it together. Then I turned, like ...
