Surf travel blitz and returning to action after a major knee injury

    1. SD

(drumming music) Joe Rogan podcast, check it out. The Joe Rogan Experience. Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night. All day. (rock music) What's up, Shane Dorian?

    2. JR

      How are you, brother?

    3. SD

      I'm doing great, man.

    4. JR

      Good to see you.

    5. SD

Thanks. Good to see you too.

    6. JR

What's cracking? What's the latest and your greatest?

    7. SD

Lots of stuff, man. I feel like... I don't know. I feel like normally I don't have that much that's the latest and greatest, but yeah, a lot- a lot's been happening. I've been crazy busy, but all good stuff, so nothing to complain about.

    8. JR

What's been happening? What's crazy busy?

    9. SD

Um, let's see. In the last, last three months, four months, been to Mexico twice, El Salvador once, California four or five times, Indonesia for a month, Tahiti, uh, France, Mexico.

    10. JR

      Damn, son.

    11. SD

      Yeah.

    12. JR

      World traveler.

    13. SD

      A lot.

    14. JR

      What you been doing?

    15. SD

      A lot of surfing.

    16. JR

      Yeah?

    17. SD

      A lot of surfing.

  2. 0:547:27

Snowboarding crash, ACL/MCL reconstruction, and the long road of rehab

    1. JR

      How's your knee?

    2. SD

      It's great.

    3. JR

      Is it 100%?

    4. SD

      It's f-

    5. JR

      Close?

    6. SD

It's amazing. It's not 100%, but it's... I never thought it would be this good again, honestly. It's really, really good. I have slight range of motion that's not as good as, as the other, which is sup- you know, to be expected, but it's great. I surf with no brace. I snowboard with no brace. Um, I go hunting all the time with no brace. I never, I never, I never really think about it, which is amazing.

    7. JR

For people that don't know, uh, you were in a snowboarding accident.

    8. SD

      Yeah.

    9. JR

And you fucking demolished your knee.

    10. SD

Yeah, I ran right into a tree.

    11. JR

      Sh- which is-

    12. SD

Wrapped my knee around a tree.

    13. JR

Always my fear when I see people skiing and snowboarding and some... 'Cause I, I quit skiing because of a- an accident. I fucked my knee up, and I cracked my shin bone. I got an insufficiency fracture in the top of my shin bone.

    14. SD

      Yeah.

    15. JR

I was like, "That's it. I'm done. I'm done with this."

    16. SD

Yeah. I love snowboarding. I'm not giving it up. So, I'm a... But yeah, like to answer your, and... To answer your question, I'm, I'm really happy with the way my knee healed up. So I... Yeah, it was a shitty experience though, that whole process. Like-

    17. JR

How long did it take you to fully heal?

    18. SD

      Probably 18 months.

    19. JR

      Phew.

    20. SD

      Yeah.

    21. JR

      Wow.

    22. SD

But I was really, really, um... I f- you know, I really followed the pro- the... I, I followed all the physical therapy and all the protocol, and I, I, uh, you know, I did every single thing I could to, to help it out. Like, you... Like you rang me and said, "Let's do the... Let's get some stem cells in your knee." So I, like, I came twice here. Um, guys at Ways to Well h- helped me out with that, and I had great results from that. I actually felt the, like the difference, which is amazing. But it healed great, so...

    23. JR

You were saying that was the turning point, like the Ways to Well, like that you were... That, that this is what, one of the things that really pushed you over the edge where it really felt like it was healing.

    24. SD

Yeah, I mean, I went to a great surgeon, and he does these things all the time with, you know, great success. And I have a lot of friends who've had that exact same surgery from him, so I was really confident.

    25. JR

What was the extent of the injury?

    26. SD

I got full repairs of my ACL and my MCL. They both basically blew off.

    27. JR

      Phew.

    28. SD

Yeah. So they, so they took my patellar tendon and split it in thirds and then built new ligaments out of that.

    29. JR

Hmm. So they did the MCL and the ACL out of the patellar tendon?

    30. SD

      Yeah.

  3. 7:279:31

Painkillers, opioid risks, and Shane’s stem cell ‘full body’ treatment in Mexico

    1. JR

Why did you, um, do you needed them after stem cells? Is that what you needed them for?

    2. SD

Yeah. So I just had stem cell treatment in Mexico. I was there for a week.

    3. JR

Oh, so you went to the CPI-

    4. SD

      Yeah.

    5. JR

... the Cellular Performance Institute in-

    6. SD

      Yeah.

    7. JR

... Mexico, and you just got hammered with them, right?

    8. SD

Yeah. I was there for a week. And, um-

    9. JR

      Wow.

    10. SD

... it was intense. It was great. So, yeah, so my, my, my treatment was, was pretty over the top. Not over the top, but for me, it was a lot. I got both shoulders done, both knees, um, my right elbow, my lumbar spine, and my cervical spine. And they, you know, I did the cervical spine, and the, and the lumbar. And when they do your spine, they put you out, so they put you under anesthesia, and then they do the rest of my body at that same time. And then, because there were so many stem cells in my back, um, like, most of the time, people wake up from that, and they're really sore and a lot of pain. Um, and so they gave me some, some, some pain medication, which I sorta needed right when I woke up. But, like, by the next morning, I was just on, like, the Tylenol trip.

    11. JR

      Mm.

    12. SD

So, like, things mellowed out really quick for me.

    13. JR

So that was two weeks ago, you said?

    14. SD

Yeah, that was, like, 10 days ago now.

    15. JR

    16. SD

      Yeah.

    17. JR

      Do you feel any difference?

    18. SD

Yes. Um, so I'm not supposed to s- to feel any different for, like, the first month. Like, you're not d- you know, like, the- these, these sort of stem cells are a little bit different. That's my understanding, at least. So they're h- they're called a, a hop- uh, uh, hypoxic stem cell, and they're from cord blood, so they're, th- so they're from an umbilical cord.

    19. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    20. SD

Um, and I got 180 million stem cells injected, and then I got 100 million stem cells in an IV. And, um, and so those kinda, uh, those kinda stem cells are, they're called hypoxic, which is, I think it means that they do really, really well under very low oxygen environments. So they're able to live in my body for up to 12 months.

    21. JR

      Mm.

    22. SD

Live, I don't know if that's the right word, but they're, they stay active and growing in your body for 12 months. So, um, so now it's just, um, a matter of me following a protocol, which is not that fun.

  4. 9:3124:03

Hypoxic cord-blood stem cells and the strict post-treatment protocol

    1. JR

And so the, the protocol involves essentially a lot of rest, right? You're, you're, you're not supposed to train. Like, what, what is the protocol?

    2. SD

Yeah. So the protocol with these specific stem cells, like, because they, you know, sorta live so long in your body, um, the first two weeks n- is basically nothing. It's like maybe 15 minutes o- of, like, walking per day, and then after that, you work with a physical therapist, and you have very specific physical therapy. So it's like, um, a lot of, like, stabilization stuff. Like, I did my spine, so I was talking to, um, Nikki Hind, who's my, my physical therapist, and so, so she's creating, like, a physical therapy, um, schedule and program for me based around my spine. And sh- she told me that she's, she's worked with some people w- who have had, um, intense stem cell therapies, and it's, like, a pretty crazy opportunity to, to kinda of, um, you have, like, a second chance, like, at this age with my spine to, like, really change it the way, the way it is. Um, so I'm pretty excited about that. I have some, like, degeneration and some, some, some bulging discs in my lower, lower back, and then I have some, my upper, upper back, my cervical spine is pretty fucked up from all the surfing wipeouts I've had.

    3. JR

      Whoa.

    4. SD

      So-

    5. JR

So surfing wipeouts like when you hit the ground and the water comes up on top of you.

    6. SD

Yeah, like falling off a 60-foot wave and hitting the surface of the water, that impact with the water, like, moving at, you know, like, 30 miles an hour, and you go in the other direction that (imitates crackling) .

    7. JR

      Ugh.

    8. SD

      Yeah. (laughs)

    9. JR

      Fuck.

    10. SD

So my neck is jacked up from a lot of that.

    11. JR

And w- do they go right into the actual disc itself?

    12. SD

So they go in, I know in my ... I don't wanna mess this up, right, but, um, I try to ask all the right questions and memorize everything. But, uh, yeah, um, I know in my cervical spine, they mostly did my facets. But in my lower back, I, I think they went straight in the discs, so they did my SI joint and then, like, my C5, C4. Is that, I don't know if that sounds correct, but-

    13. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    14. SD

Um, so yeah, they did the discs.

    15. JR

      Wow.

    16. SD

      So-

    17. JR

And is it supposed to make the discs expand?

    18. SD

      Yeah.

    19. JR

And make it larger, and so there's more cushion between the spinal column?

    20. SD

      Yeah. Exactly.

    21. JR

      Wow.

    22. SD

And they re- you know, like, they regrow tissue. They regrow ligaments. And so where there's been a lot of, um, wearing down, a lot of times, it'll regrow that. So I did my MRIs before my treatment, and then I'll go back six months from now and get updated MRIs. They're really good about the data, so they wanna see your progress. So a doctor will go over you with your new MRI six months from now and, and compare them exactly-

    23. JR

      Mm.

    24. SD

... to the previous MRI and go, "Hey, here, here's where, here, here's where your knee was." Or your-

    25. JR

      Mm.

    26. SD

Or, "Here's where your discs were, and here's where they are now."And so they tried, you know, that's the, that's the goal, right? Is, is, is for you to see some major improvement.

    27. JR

And is a part of the thing with not exercising at all just making sure that you don't, don't do any breaking down of the body while it's going through this process of accepting the stem cells? Is that-

    28. SD

Yeah. That's a good question. So, the, my, my understanding is, so in your body, like the way an injury or, like, a torn ligament or a torn rotator cuff shows up in your body, it's just inflammation. And inflammation is, like, basically like a magnet for stem cells. So the, so the stem cells go exactly where they're needed in your body. They're really smart. Um, so the, so, so the stem cells were injected straight into the joints and into the areas of my body. But, um, what'd you ask me again? What was the question?

    29. JR

I, I said the idea of-

    30. SD

      Oh.

  5. 24:0335:31

Training consistency vs overtraining—and Joe’s near-carnivore diet for energy and cognition

    1. SD

You're fit, dude. What have you been eating? I, I, I know I asked you on the... when I was, I was texting you, but I wanted to get a full breakdown of Joe's food program.

    2. JR

      It's almost all meat.

    3. SD

      Yeah?

    4. JR

Yeah. Yeah, I'm almost entirely... Uh, that's my... All I eat is meat.

    5. SD

      Okay. I need to-

    6. JR

      Like yesterday, my-

    7. SD

      We need to unpack this.

    8. JR

... entire day was almost... My entire day was like 95% elk.

    9. SD

      Wow.

    10. JR

      Yeah.... it's all you...

    11. SD

      F-freaking awesome.

    12. JR

      Yeah, I did-

    13. SD

      It's okay.

    14. JR

For me, i-it just seems to work. I mean, I've tried a bunch of different diets, but for me, uh, there's a lot of benefits to this carnivore diet. And one of the biggest ones, 'cause I do this for a living, right? So one of the biggest ones is the cognitive benefits.

    15. SD

      Yeah.

    16. JR

There's, there's some giant difference between your body running on ketones, which is essentially when it runs on when you're running on just fats-

    17. SD

      Mm.

    18. JR

... and, and protein, versus your body running on s-sugar, carbs, and, you know, pasta and bread.

    19. SD

      Yeah.

    20. JR

That stuff would make me crash, and I would feel dull. Like, my mind would feel dull. And when I started back on the carnivore diet, like, one of the first things that I noticed, like, almost immediately, was that I had an extra gear verbally. I got-

    21. SD

      Right.

    22. JR

      ... an extra gear cognitively.

    23. SD

      Yeah.

    24. JR

Like, o- my mind is forming sentences better. Like, it's, it's quicker. I'm, I'm, I'm more in tune with conversations, which, obviously, because I do this for a living, it's fucking so critical.

    25. SD

      Yeah, it's huge.

    26. JR

Like, I would stay on this diet just for that, just for that. But then, the other benefits are my energy levels are completely flat throughout the day. There's no crashes.

    27. SD

      Wow.

    28. JR

      There's no peaks and valleys.

    29. SD

      And good energy?

    30. JR

      Fucking great.

  6. 35:3138:20

Vitamin D deficiency, digestion/absorption, and why surfers can still test low

    1. SD

I was gonna ta-... I was gonna say that, um... Like, while, while we're on the... This thing about the food. Um, you know Denise...

    2. JR

      From WaistDwell?

    3. SD

      Denise, right? Yeah, WaistDwell.

    4. JR

      Yeah.

    5. SD

She... Like, I did my original blood work with, with her. And then we did a really cool, uh, Zoom call afterwards, and we talked for, like, an hour about my blood work. And I was, uh, deficient in a bunch of different things. And, and one of the things was vitamin D. And she goes, "I think you should start supplementing with vitamin D. Do you?" And I said, "Yeah, I actually take vitamin D every day." And she's, "Well, this... There's some weird disconnect, so will you send me the brand or what- whatever you take?" She's like, "That's a great brand. There's something wrong happening with, with the, with the way your body's trying to absorb and digest that." So, she has... So, so there was a bunch of things in my diet that I was taking that I was kind of deficient in. And so she started me on this, uh, digestive en- enzyme, which is essentially papaya enzymes. Um, and then I got my blood work done six months later, and I was, like, really great on my vitamin D.

    6. JR

      Interesting.

    7. SD

      Yeah.

    8. JR

So, there was something about...... your diet and the supplements where your body wasn't accepting the vitamin D?

    9. SD

      Yeah.

    10. JR

Well, they, they usually say vitamin D should take with K2.

    11. SD

      Yeah.

    12. JR

Were you taking it with K2?

    13. SD

      I take both.

    14. JR

      Yeah?

    15. SD

But my body, for some reason, just wasn't getting the vitamin D.

    16. JR

      That's interesting.

    17. SD

Yeah, but most... Uh, there's a lot of people that are deficient in vitamin D.

    18. JR

Yeah. Oh, it's a giant problem.

    19. SD

      Yeah.

    20. JR

And it's a giant prob-... Well, it's really a hormone.

    21. SD

      Yeah, it is.

    22. JR

      Vitamin D is very different.

    23. SD

      Yeah.

    24. JR

And the best way to get it, really, is from outside. The best way to get it is from the sun.

    25. SD

      Yeah.

    26. JR

But if you don't get it from the sun enough, like specifically if you live in a cold climate, you really have to supplement.

    27. SD

      I-

    28. JR

If you don't, it's re- it's just really bad for your health-

    29. SD

      Yeah.

    30. JR

... overall, in all ways: your immune system function. Something like at one point in time, like 74% of the people that were in the ICU for COVID were deficient in vitamin D.

  7. 38:2046:30

Morning sunlight, circadian rhythm, and the genetics of short sleepers

    1. JR

One of the things that I do that Huberman says to do is I spend the early part of the morning, like, staring into the sun.

    2. SD

      Yeah.

    3. JR

I get up in the morning and the first thing I do is go into the cold plunge, and where, where my cold plunge is set up, like, when I get in in the morning, the sun is, like, right there-

    4. SD

      Yeah.

    5. JR

... in the sky when I'm freezing my dick off. So, I just lie in this thing and, like, stare at the sun, and it's, it's an amazing way to wake up. It just fires me up, like, right away. It just changes my whole day.

    6. SD

      Yeah.

    7. JR

You know? Like, whatever sluggishness and weirdness that I have, I get in that thing and it's like, "Yikes," and I'm staring at the sun. It's like whoop.

    8. SD

      Yeah.

    9. JR

Like, all my levels just go right back up to normal.

    10. SD

I'm drawing a blank on the term, but what is it called when your body, uh, sets its time for the day from the sun and then getting-

    11. JR

      Circadian rhythm?

    12. SD

      Yeah, circadian rhythm.

    13. JR

      Yeah.

    14. SD

It's supposed to be great for that. So, it, it, it benefits your sleep a lot, right, to, to get sunlight early in the morning?

    15. JR

      Yeah, supposedly. I've ne-

    16. SD

'Cause it sets your body's clock, your mind's clock.

    17. JR

I- I've never had a problem with sleep.

    18. SD

      Yeah, me neither.

    19. JR

      Lu- luckily.

    20. SD

      Yeah.

    21. JR

I'm just one of those guys. I c-

    22. SD

      That sucks.

    23. JR

      (laughs) Sucks.

    24. SD

Yeah, I have friends that really struggle with sleep.

    25. JR

      My wife struggles with sleep.

    26. SD

      Yeah.

    27. JR

I, I can go to sleep on a fucking train-

    28. SD

      Yeah.

    29. JR

... station floor and just lie down.

    30. SD

Yeah, I don't get it at all. And I, I, I'm not super empathetic about it too, 'cause-

Axis deer bowhunting in Hawaii: sustainability, difficulty, and animal ‘dodge’ reflexes

    1. JR

Yeah. So, um, how was the, the bow hunting in Hawaii been?

    2. SD

(clapping) It's been, it's been good. It's been good. It's been good for me. I've been, um, I've been bowhunting axis deer a lot. I actually, um, I, I, I, I took the year off, uh, hunting elk. I saw, I saw that you were hunting elk and, and we talked but, uh, yeah, you had a really exciting elk, elk season. I want to hear about that. But yeah, it's been, it's been amazing. I've been not home very much but the, the last couple times I was home in Hawaii I, I bowhunted axis deer. I went on this last trip I killed four deer and, um, that was a, just lots of fun. Just spent tons of time mostly spooking deer and missing but, uh, four of them ended up-

    3. JR

      Were you on Maui?

    4. SD

      Uh, yeah. I was. Yeah.

    5. JR

The thing about axis deer hunting is it's so sus- it's so sustainable. It's such a great way-

    6. SD

      Oh, yeah.

    7. JR

      ... to get food because-

    8. SD

      Yeah.

    9. JR

... there's no natural predators. They literally have to be hunted.

    10. SD

      Yeah.

    11. JR

And there's fucking thousands of them.

    12. SD

      Thousands.

    13. JR

      Thousands.

    14. SD

      Yeah.

    15. JR

When we did Lanai, remember when we had the dream team-

    16. SD

Yeah. Yeah, it was such a good trip.

    17. JR

... in Lanai? Oh, it was so good. (laughs) Gotta do it again, man.

    18. SD

      (laughs) That was so fun.

    19. JR

It was you, me, Cam Hanes, Jon Dudley-

    20. SD

      Yeah.

    21. JR

      ... Adam Greentree-

    22. SD

      Yeah.

    23. JR

      ... Remy Warren, Ben O'Bryan-

    24. SD

      Benny.

    25. JR

      Oh my god.

    26. SD

He was such a good crew.

    27. JR

      What a crew.

    28. SD

      I know, it was wild.

    29. JR

What a great time we had.

    30. SD

Yeah. We had the best time ever.

Bow vs rifle ethics, practice requirements, and staying calm under pressure (ShotIQ)

    1. SD

So, so, so, uh, let me ask you this. So I'm totally not opposed to rifle hunting at all. I think rifles are great for filling a freezer-

    2. JR

      100%.

    3. SD

... and totally ethical hunting. But for, for you, that rifle hunts sometimes and b- bow hunts sometimes, the feeling of making the perfect archery shot on a bull elk, and the feeling of seeing that arrow go through the air and hit it exactly where you aimed, and that elk going down in 10 seconds, it's a different feeling, right?

    4. JR

      It's way better.

    5. SD

      Yeah.

    6. JR

It's much, much, much, much, much more difficult. Because, uh, you can have a very ethical shot on a deer with a rifle at 200 yards where the deer might not have any idea you're even there.

    7. SD

      Yeah.

    8. JR

So if you... Especially if you're prone. So if you have a pack and you rest your rifle on the pack and you're lying down on your stomach (exhales) and you breathe out and relax, that bullet is flying so straight-

    9. SD

      Yeah.

    10. JR

... if your, your rifle is zeroed-

    11. SD

      Mm-hmm.

    12. JR

... and you, you know, you look at the reticle and you get it... You get those crosshairs perfectly on the vitals, that's a dead deer.

    13. SD

      Yeah.

    14. JR

      100%.

    15. SD

      Yeah.

    16. JR

Whereas with bow hunting, you've got wind, you've got all sorts of shit going on, and you have to get so close that you're within the animal's senses. Like, when I...... crept up on this elk that I shot last week. I wore two pairs of wool socks.

    17. SD

      Yeah.

    18. JR

      I took my shoes off-

    19. SD

      Yeah.

    20. JR

... 'cause I could creep in.

    21. SD

      Yeah.

    22. JR

Because he was bedded, and it was-

    23. SD

      So damn cool.

    24. JR

It was so cool, because it was the perfect opportunity, because he was bedded, and he was looking away from me. I was like, "Oh, he's dead, he's dead. I just have to do this the right way." And so I started out at, like, 110 yards, and I crept in very slowly the final 60 yards, and it took... 'Cause there was, like, a bunch of shit in the way.

    25. SD

      Mm-hmm.

    26. JR

I had to get to 50, and I got to 60. I was like, "I like it, but I don't like these branches and shit. I gotta get to the right."

    27. SD

      Yeah.

    28. JR

Which is, like, another 10 yards. It took me, like, another 10 minutes.

    29. SD

      (laughs) Yeah.

    30. JR

Just nice and slow. Ni- But when I got to 50, and he was still bedded, I'm like, "Oh, he's dead. I just have to wait for him to stand up."
