Trout fishing tactics and why fly fishing is its own skill set
- JRJoe Rogan
Joe Rogan Podcast, check it out.
- JRJoe Rogan
The Joe Rogan Experience.
- JRJoe Rogan
Train by day, Joe Rogan Podcast by night. All day. [upbeat music] Pull up onto the microphone, Mr. Bradshaw.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Went up there catching, uh, rainbow trout.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, yeah?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Oh, man, killed 'em. I've been up, this is our fourth year catching-
- JRJoe Rogan
You fly fish?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. Oh, yeah. But you're not fly fishing. You come back in July for fly fishing. This is fly fishing, but you've got a fly bobber. It's a fly.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Then you got that tiny, tiny bug. I mean, you can't even see it, and that's what you catch 'em on.
- JRJoe Rogan
So you fly... You're using a fly rod.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
But you have a bobber and a little tiny fly.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Well, the, the bobber, the bobber is a, basically a big moth or something-
- JRJoe Rogan
Okay
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... that holds it up.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right. Right.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
It's bob- bobber, cork, whatever.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
So it's just a different kind of fly fishing.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
What you're doing, because you're not... You're in a boat. You know how fast that water's moving.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
And you just go down through there, and they move it to the jets and jetties and stuff, and...
- JRJoe Rogan
So you find, like, the pools where they're waiting-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah
- JRJoe Rogan
... and then you just, like, what?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You go, and you just find it. Goes boom.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Just, yeah, [laughs] fun, man. Oh, brown trout. Yeah, it was a good time.
- 2:08 – 4:26
‘Baby Jesus’ on the boat: superstition, faith, and a sudden hot streak
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... I forget if we were. I carry a baby Jesus with me. Let me tell you what happened.
- JRJoe Rogan
You carry a baby Jesus?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Baby Jesus. So it's-
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, from the manger?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yes. Jesus.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
It's Jesus. We call it baby Jesus.
- JRJoe Rogan
Okay.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Okay?
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, so it is just-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah, Jesus
- JRJoe Rogan
... grown up Jesus.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Right.
- JRJoe Rogan
Has a beard and everything.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah, exactly.
- JRJoe Rogan
Okay.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
So we're not catching anything, and so I reach in my pocket. I don't know why I'm looking for my li-... I don't know what I was doing, and I had this baby Jesus. I said, "Oh." My son-in-law's in the back. I said, "I got baby Jesus with me." And I set him on the, on the igloo, on the box facing me. You ready, Joe? One, two, three, four, five, six. Six giant rainbow in a row.
- JRJoe Rogan
[laughs]
- TBTerry Bradshaw
So my son-in-law's in the back, and he's going, "Turn baby Jesus towards me." [laughs] So I turned, I turned around. I took baby Jesus toward him. One, two, three, four, five, six. I went, "Nah, this..."
- JRJoe Rogan
That's weird.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Which we caught 12, 12 rainbow anywhere from 15 to 20 inches. That's big.
- JRJoe Rogan
Whoa.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah, that's big.
- JRJoe Rogan
That's good rainbow.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
So the, so the, so the, the, um, the, um, guide, I mean, he's, he got a little tripped out. He, he's, he's, [laughs] he said, he said, "Hey, man, y- hey, you're kinda, you're kinda messing with me here. That's kinda, that's kinda got, got me a little screwed up here." [laughs] I started laughing. I said, "Man, you got the power of Jesus in here." So we kept it all day. Before I left, I gave it to him so he c- He said, "I'm gonna use this every day."
- JRJoe Rogan
[laughs]
- TBTerry Bradshaw
So that's, it was kind of fun.
- JRJoe Rogan
I don't think that's something you should use every day. I think that that should be, like, for special trips. You don't wanna ask Jesus every day to help you catch fish.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Well, I don't go fishing every day. But yeah, you're right.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right. You know what I'm saying?
- 4:26 – 14:15
Bradshaw Bourbon: tasting, proof levels, aging, and bourbon history trivia
- JRJoe Rogan
Solid dude. Man's man. What, what's with all the whiskey?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Um-
- JRJoe Rogan
Did you bring that?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
I was wondering.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You don't drink. Well-
- JRJoe Rogan
I'll drink.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. This-
- JRJoe Rogan
I, I quit, and then I came back.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. This is-
- JRJoe Rogan
I quit for eight months. Not, not really, like, I didn't have a problem.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Right. Well-
- JRJoe Rogan
I just, health reasons, I decided it wasn't a good thing for you.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. That's smart. I, um-
- JRJoe Rogan
You have your own Terry Bradshaw Whiskey?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah, we've had it now going on s-
- JRJoe Rogan
Come on, son. We gotta have a glass of that
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... s- seven years.
- JRJoe Rogan
Do you drink?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yes.
- JRJoe Rogan
You better.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I drink. I drink this.
- JRJoe Rogan
You're selling whiskey. You better-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. I drink this. Um, but this-
- JRJoe Rogan
Let's have a, let's have a drink
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... this is our 12 year that just won all the golden awards in spirits and-
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, nice.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. Won all of them.
- JRJoe Rogan
So aged 12 years?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
12 years. 13 now.
- 14:15 – 19:31
Cigars, marriage ‘concessions,’ and the elk trophy that got banished to the garage
- JRJoe Rogan
You smoke cigars, Terry?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I do.
- JRJoe Rogan
You want one?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah, I do.
- JRJoe Rogan
All right. Let me get you one.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I want, I want a really good one. [laughs]
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You got 'em? Oh, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Hey, I, I love s- hey, ask my w- I've got the only... I'm probably married to the only wife who lets me smoke in the house.
- JRJoe Rogan
Really?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You married?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yes. I can't smoke in the house.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Oh, see there?
- JRJoe Rogan
Everything you see in this place is because I can't do anything at home.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Oh.
- JRJoe Rogan
All the elk heads and all the crazy artwork and Jimi Hendrix and all that jazz.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Really?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Do, so-
- JRJoe Rogan
It's like I let her decorate the house.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
You know what I mean? It's beautiful. It's very acce- if, if m- my house would look like a 16-year-old boy won the lottery.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Well-
- JRJoe Rogan
That's what it'd look like
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... I can understand that. I don't know why-
- JRJoe Rogan
There'd be-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I honestly-
- JRJoe Rogan
... racing simulators and-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I, I don't know why my-

Elk hunting realities: tags, ethics, snakes, and giant centipedes
- JRJoe Rogan
I only have one in my house. It's the first one I ever killed.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
I have, uh, that on my wall.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
That's pretty impressive. You shoot an elk or anything but with a bow and arrow, you're close.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, it's a lot of work and-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah
- JRJoe Rogan
... but-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
It's not easy
- JRJoe Rogan
... it's not easy, but I, I look forward to it every year like nothing else.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Do you go out for two weeks, a week?
- JRJoe Rogan
A week.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Usually a week, week at a time. Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You go to Mexico or, or Idaho?
- JRJoe Rogan
I haven't been to New Mexico, uh, but I, I want to. New Mexico is like, uh, the Gila Mountains out there. That's supposed to be, like, one of the best elk... That, Arizona, um, spots of Utah just for volume.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Sp- spots of California.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Montana's got big elk. Wy-
- JRJoe Rogan
Montana has huge elk.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I don't know about Wyoming.
- JRJoe Rogan
Idaho.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I know Idaho, Ut-
- JRJoe Rogan
Wyoming has big elk
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... Utah has huge elk.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I'm not an elk hunter, but I know all this 'cause for- the one time I went elk hunting, I gave my trainer, my horse trainer, my tag.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, really?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
And I just followed him.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, wow.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah, it was cool. And he shot this huge six-by-six.
- 22:44 – 29:51
Raising ducks for fun, wild game misconceptions, and ‘don’t learn duck like YouTube football’
- TBTerry Bradshaw
We raise 27 mallard ducks, my wife and I.
- JRJoe Rogan
You raise them?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Raise them. Raise, raise them. And so I told her this morning flying down here to Austin, so I told her, I said, "We got five ducks left." "What happened to them?" Stupid ducks. Now we, we live way out in the country. What, what they're doing is coming out of the lake, walking through the field, crossing over the road.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, they get crushed.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
And they're getting hit on the road.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Why? Why, I have no idea. But we got five left out of 27.
- JRJoe Rogan
Are you raising them for eggs, or you just-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
No, we just raise them for fun.
- JRJoe Rogan
For fun?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Just to have ducks hanging around?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah, we have ducks-
- JRJoe Rogan
That's cool
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... we got ducks, chickens, guineas.
- JRJoe Rogan
Duck eggs are interesting. You ever have them?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I'm not eating a duck egg. I don't know why.
- JRJoe Rogan
No?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
They're darker yolk, I know that. You ever had a guinea egg?
- JRJoe Rogan
Guinea f- what is it, like a-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Guinea
- JRJoe Rogan
... guinea hen?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You know the gui-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... guinea hen. Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
No, I don't think so.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah, yeah. It's, it's, it's good for you, but I, eh.
- JRJoe Rogan
The duck eggs are weird. They, like, coat your mouth.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
[laughs]
- JRJoe Rogan
You know what I mean?
- 29:51 – 32:16
Squirrel brain stories, prion disease, and parasites like the screw worm
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You eat turkey?
- JRJoe Rogan
That's all it is
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Wild turkey?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yes, I've had wild turkey.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
God dang.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, what, you're crazy. I've had it.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
No.
- JRJoe Rogan
It was delicious
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I mean, the only way wild turk- You eat squirrel?
- JRJoe Rogan
I've had squirrel, yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Now, see, I grew up on squirrel. Now, you tell my wife that or you tell any of my kids that, oh, God, that...
- JRJoe Rogan
So this is a lot like chicken, right? It's a lot like chicken.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Is that Joe-
- JRJoe Rogan
Wouldn't you agree?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You're a stand-up comedian.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah
- TBTerry Bradshaw
So is that, is that a funny?
- JRJoe Rogan
No, it's kind of chicken-like. It's almost like a r-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Squirrel tastes like chicken?
- JRJoe Rogan
Well, it's not like a red meat.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You eat the brain?
- JRJoe Rogan
I have not eaten squirrel brain.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. Now, the brain.
- JRJoe Rogan
I've had lamb's brain before.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Ugh.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm. Yeah, my Uncle Vinny used to cook it.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Ugh
- JRJoe Rogan
He used to slice up... They used to sell it in the grocery store in New Jersey. They'd slice up a, a lamb's skull with the brain inside, like sliced in half.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Ugh
- JRJoe Rogan
And they'd put two halves on the grill, and they would cook lamb's brains on the grillHey, I was like 10. I don't know.
- 32:16 – 38:12
Ivermectin, COVID narratives, and Terry’s own COVID timeline
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I mean, I got in trouble one time for saying, uh, people were having, during the COVID thing, uh, they were taking ivermectin.
- JRJoe Rogan
Uh-huh.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You may have taken ivermectin. And I gave up, I, I didn't know any better. I thought I knew, but I didn't know.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
But ivermectin, we, I used to give it to the cattle.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
That's, that's what, I, I-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
And I had a, not speaking of brains, this is true. We're in Hawaii, I run into a brain surgeon, and he says, "If, are you okay with the COVID thing?" And I said, "Um, I had it, got over it. You know, I'm all right now." And he says, wow, he says, "Boy, I tell you," he said, "I take ivermectin, man. That's been..." I said, "Brain surgeon," and I said to him, obviously, I said, "Really? You... It's a cattle dewormer. Ivermectin kills, kills parasites." So I just left it at that, and I walked away going, "A brain surgeon?" [laughs] I never could rationalize that kind of thinking, but you know.
- JRJoe Rogan
Well, you know, ivermectin won the Nobel Prize for human beings-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I did-
- JRJoe Rogan
... for use in human beings.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
No, I didn't know that
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. It's good for yellow fever, dengue fever. Um, it's an anti-parasitic that also-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah
- JRJoe Rogan
... has antiviral properties, so.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. I, I didn't know that. Obviously, I wasn't as well informed as you are.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. Well, I got in trouble for it.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
But, yeah. Oh, well, I, so did I.
- JRJoe Rogan
Well, I d- I got in trouble, like, publicly, like on CNN. The, the, the White House talked about it during... I got overc- You don't know the story, so, and for the people that know the story, I'm sorry I have to repeat it, but during the pandemic, um, I got COVID, and we had to c- Me and Dave Chappelle were doing a show in Nashville, and I had to cancel it because I had COVID. And so I made a video, um, saying that I feel better, but we have to cancel the shows. I had COVID. I was sick for a couple days, but now I'm fine. And I explained all the stuff that I took. I took a bunch of stuff, monoclonal antibodies, and one of the things that I took was ivermectin.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
So it became this huge thing on CNN 'cause they wanted everybody to get vaccinated, so they had all these different people saying that I was taking horse dewormer. Well, it's human medication prescribed to me by my doctor, who also took ivermectin, also got COVID, also got better. He, and he didn't take all the stuff that I took.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
No.
- JRJoe Rogan
I took a bunch of stuff, but they changed the color of my skin. They made my skin look green on CNN.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
[laughs]
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, no bullshit.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Oh.
- JRJoe Rogan
No bullshit. Like, this is-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
The AI do.
- JRJoe Rogan
They, they literally put a filter-

Pain, stem cells vs skepticism, PRP/Regenokine, and Terry’s cancer + arthritis history
- TBTerry Bradshaw
No, I, no, I got a bad hip right now. I'm, I'm telling you, Joe, it's killing me.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
And I got it injected.
- JRJoe Rogan
With?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
And-
- JRJoe Rogan
Stem cells? With injected stem cells?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
No, no, I don't do stem cells.
- JRJoe Rogan
Why not?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I, I don't believe in stem cells.
- JRJoe Rogan
You don't believe in them?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
No.
- JRJoe Rogan
But you believe in that little baby Jesus?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Absolutely.
- JRJoe Rogan
That catches fish for you? [laughs]
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Oh, yeah. No, this, this I do believe in. [laughs]
- JRJoe Rogan
We go-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Go ahead and laugh. That, Joe, you don't wanna laugh when I got baby Jesus pointing at you.
- JRJoe Rogan
[laughs]
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You better cut that laughing, bro.
- JRJoe Rogan
Listen.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You better shut that down.
- JRJoe Rogan
If, if you and I go fishing, I'm gonna beg you to point that baby Jesus my way.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
No, no, no, no. I'm gonna give you one.
- JRJoe Rogan
Okay.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I got hundreds of these.
- JRJoe Rogan
If we go fishing, I-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
No
- JRJoe Rogan
... I really want him pointed my way.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You'll just have to-
- JRJoe Rogan
I believe

Playing hurt in the ’70s: mystery injections, steroids era, and concussion ‘protocol’ back then
- TBTerry Bradshaw
14.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
14 professional.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
That's four... That's high school, junior high-
- JRJoe Rogan
Right
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... high school, college, professional.
- JRJoe Rogan
Ooh.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
And I, and I played back in the '70s when, sh- I mean, come on.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Shit hit the fan back then.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right. What were the surgeries like back then?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Dude, you know, you-
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... I mean, it was tough.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Back then they'd shoot you up. You g- [laughs] You know, you, you're gonna play. That's how it was.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You're going to play. When I pulled my stomach muscles and they would shoot me up before the game, and then at halftime I'd get sh- shot up again.
- JRJoe Rogan
What were they shooting you up with?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Stomach block. I torn, I torn the, the, um, oblique. It's a-
- JRJoe Rogan
You tore your oblique and they just made you keep playing?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
They didn't make me.
- JRJoe Rogan
But you, you wanted to.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I wanted to play.
- JRJoe Rogan
And what were they shooting you up with? Cortisone or something?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Stuff. I don't know.
- JRJoe Rogan
Stuff? [laughs]
- TBTerry Bradshaw
[laughs] Stuff. I don't know. Joe, I'm not a doctor. Come on, man.
- JRJoe Rogan
[laughs]
- 52:16 – 1:07:21
Steroids in sports, the MLB home run boom, and why athletes keep getting bigger
- JRJoe Rogan
Did they have steroids back then?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. [laughs] They did.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I just didn't, I didn't know why, why one player was built like Atlas. [laughs] Skin tight, muscles bulging. Didn't know he, you know, didn't know anything about it. Howie Long. You, you never had Howie on the... Howie's amazing.
- JRJoe Rogan
No, I've never had Howie on.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Howie's amazing. Now, Howie tells this story. He was a rookie defensive tackler, no, defensive end at this time. He lined up over our tight end, Larry Brown, whose arms were this big around, and he was, had like a 22-inch waist. Massive legs, ripped. Every muscle, you could see the muscles and the, he's j- most gorgeous body on a human being you've ever seen.
- JRJoe Rogan
[laughs]
- TBTerry Bradshaw
And he put his, he put his arm, [laughs] he put his arm down at, you know, getting in position, and Howie lined up over him. And Howie tells this, Howie's the best, and Howie goes, "You gotta be effing kidding me." [laughs] And he said he'd never seen anything like that. So I don't, I'm not saying Larry did s- steroids or anything like that, but he was something else.
- JRJoe Rogan
But he might've.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Might've. I don't know.
- JRJoe Rogan
He might've.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
He might've.
- JRJoe Rogan
Some people were.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. Might-
- JRJoe Rogan
What year did steroids enter into sports?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Well, I think it came, [laughs] I think it became an issue after the '70s, correct?
- JRJoe Rogan
Well, it was an issue in the Olympics and, uh-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Well, yeah
- JRJoe Rogan
... one of the things they were noticing was-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Right
- JRJoe Rogan
... Eastern Bloc women, they weren't very-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
"Hey, I'm gonna do an interview." "Okay, Nancy."
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
[laughs]
- JRJoe Rogan
They weren't very womanly.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
They, they seemed to... And then th- those women reported about it, they talked about it back in the day that, you know, that they were forced to take steroids and it ruined their life, and yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Not good for you, that's for sure.
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Not good for you at all
- 1:07:21 – 1:23:29
Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali’s mind games, and the Sonny Liston ‘gun’ clip fact-check
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Bad. He came in a restaurant I was in, and he saw me, and he came over, and he pulled up a chair. There was a aisle, and I'm sitting over here next to the wall, and then there's a, dinner chairs here. He went over, he pulled up a chair, slid it over, blocked the aisle, and we talked about Johnny Unitas for an hour.
- JRJoe Rogan
Wow.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Mike Tyson. Now, that's pretty cool.
- JRJoe Rogan
Well, he's a, a giant fan of all kinds of athletes, you know? I mean-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah
- JRJoe Rogan
... that, that guy studies-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah
- JRJoe Rogan
... he studies warriors, and athletes, and former generals, and he's-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Really?
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh, he knows so much about Genghis Khan. Me and-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah
- JRJoe Rogan
... we had this long conversa- he knew his original name-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You know anything about Gen-
- JRJoe Rogan
... which is Temujin
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... Genghis Khan?
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, I did. I knew a lot about it.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You know-
- JRJoe Rogan
Well, not a lot, I would say, but I, I got pretty obsessed, and I, there's a guy named Dan Carlin. He's got a fantastic series called, uh, Hardcore History.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
It's a podcast. And he had this series on Genghis Khan called The Wrath of the Khan, and that, that, that got me obsessed. That opened up the door. And then I started reading books on Genghis Khan and watching documentaries, and I got obsessed.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah, I'm a huge documentary guy.
- JRJoe Rogan
But he knew so much about Genghis Khan. He knew his original name, which was Temujin. He knew his whole story, about how he was-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Really?
- JRJoe Rogan
... born with a blood clot in his hand. It j- Mike knew everything about it.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah, Mike studies, like, conquerors, you know? He's, like, really-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
People wouldn't know that about him.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
He's a very smart guy.
- 1:23:29 – 1:56:08
Memory, ADD, Dunbar’s number, and the cost of being ‘too friendly’
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... I went in, listen, I went, I've been to a couple of clinics just for, just for brain work, just to get, get, um-
- JRJoe Rogan
Checked out?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah, all the tests that they could possibly do. Extensive test. 'Cause I was having trouble remembering, did I open the gate? Did I open the gate this morning?
- JRJoe Rogan
Right. Right. Where I put my keys.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I did, I opened the gate.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I'm sure I opened the gate. And I'd push the button, and when the button's green, the gate is moving. And then it goes red, it stopped. I, I mean, it goes yellow, it stopped. Then I push a button, it goes red. It's holding. It's staying open. Six times. I remember six times. And I'm like, "Did I push this button?" [laughs]
- JRJoe Rogan
Oh.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
And then I, I remember, I remember, okay, there's something's wrong. It's like, so I went and got checked. Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
How long ago was this?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Ooh, years ago. Years. 30-plus years ago.
- JRJoe Rogan
And did they do something for you?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Um, golly, did they? Uh, no, I don't think so. I don't think I, I don't think anything came f- I remember testing. I got tested and found out I had ADD, which was, which was not a shocker, but was a shocker 'cause I-
- JRJoe Rogan
I think everybody has that.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Everybody who's any good at anything has it.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
[laughs]
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Creative people have ADD.
- JRJoe Rogan
Creative people and people that are-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah
- JRJoe Rogan
... like, really into one thing.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah. Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, full on into it.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Well, they said, "Well, you're focused at this, that."
- JRJoe Rogan
Uh-huh.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah, but when, when I'm fishing, I'm focused.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
When I'm showing horses, I don't have a problem.
- JRJoe Rogan
Exactly.

Burglaries, getting shot at, gun culture, and training serious guard dogs
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Say amen.Yeah, I'm... My brother has... I don't have any guns. I go, "What'd you do with all those guns?" "Man, you gotta have guns." I was like, "Gary." He's got those, those rifles that c- shoot 5,000 rounds in 10 seconds. [laughs] The NR- what are those things called? AR-15. Yeah, that's it. [laughs] Yeah. He's got five or six. I was, "What do you do with all those guns?" "You never know when you're gonna need a gun." [laughs] There's a lot of people like that in this country. Oh, my God. Yeah. They are. Yeah. Oh. And I got a, I got a, um... What do I got? I got a bunch of guns, but I gave them all away. Every ti- everybody gives me guns. I don't shoot guns. You don't shoot guns at all? No. No? No. My wife won't let me put a gun by the bed. I've been, I've been, um, burglarized six times. Have you really? Yeah. [laughs] Where do you live? I got shot at with a shotgun. This is how I can tell you that when it's, you get shot at with a shotgun, flames come out of the gun. Flames. And I'm run- [laughs] I'm running in the backyard ju- to get in my car, and this guy goes around the backside. Boom. Where was this? And flames every... And, and BBs. [laughs] And then I get in the, in the old, uh, GTO, 1970 GTO. Nice car. Yellow and black top. Yeah. Man, get 'er done. Yeah, get 'er done. Yeah, boy, this is nice. And I got in. But I'm used to pushing the button or pull- in reverse, you go down, right? Right, right. I pull it down, I turn around, I hit the brake, I go forward right in through the wall. [laughs] Realized you gotta go one click. Ah. So yeah, it was not good. Not good. But my wife won't let me keep anything. So where, where did you get burglarized six times? Ruston. Ruston? Ruston, Louisiana. Really? Mansfield, Louisiana, on my ranches, yeah. On your ranches? Yeah. So they came onto the ranch? Yeah. How big was the ranch? Man, uh, 400 acres at the time. Oh, so they had to do some driving to get to the house. And they had to go through, uh, the gate. The gate, the gate I locked. So how did they get in? And you ever... Let me tell you something. You ever lay in bed at night, and it's 1:00 AM in the morning, and you feel the presence of somebody else in your house? Mm. All right? And a flashlight is going over your head and going through the wall like this. You... I ain't even, I, I can't even begin to tell you. You can't breathe, and you don't... And I'm laying down like this, and I'm flat on myself. And back in those days, you're too young to know this, remember the, well, the Princess phone? You know what the Princess phone is? Princess phone? You know everything we've been talking about today. You've been throwing all kind of shit up here. Right. And you don't know what a Princess phone... Do you know what a Pr- Are you say- are you saying Prince phone? Princess. Princess. Princess. Princess phone. It's a phone, it was one of the first push button phones. You didn't have to... [imitates rotary dialing] Okay. It's a Princess. So I took my... [laughs] Look at you. It doesn't- That's a Princess phone, Jamie? There you go. Thank you so much. Okay. Did you know what that is, Jamie? No. No. [laughs] Hey, look, look. I'm at... Look, Joe. I'm laying in bed. I take my left hand, and I slide it over to my Princess phone. I take the receiver off, and I take my fingers and I go across the dials and I dial, do, do, do, do. And I, my uncle, who lives 200 yards away, I get the phone. Pull up to the microphone so people can hear you. Oh, I'm sorry. I pu- I pull up, I, I pull the phone up. I'm laying back, trying so he can't see me or anything. And I said, "Bobby, I got a burglar. He's at my, he's at my bedroom window." He says, "All right, I'm on my way." So I take the phone down and goes... And you can see the guy hears my, hears my uncle coming, and this guy takes off and he chases him down through the pasture and he loses him out through the... I had another guy go through my house, tearing up my kitchen. Same place? No, different place. Wow. In, in college, tearing up my, tearing up my dishes in my kitchen. He was looking through the dishes? He making noise. I... [clears throat] Only thing I could figure was the guy was trying to run me off. I was living in a Methodist parsonage out on the edge of town. Come to find out this guy was living in the attic over the office. So the cops found all kind of paraphernalia- Oh ... cans of food, beer, up in the office. So only thing I could figure, he's trying to run. But I, he ran me off, 'cause I- Or he might've just been drugged up ... I'm out of there. I don't know what he was. I wasn't gonna stick around to find out. He might've been on drugs. But you, so you've had- I've come home, I've come home twice and had guys running out of my house, taking off. Same house? Yeah, yeah. Six. Six of these I had. Jeez. Ever been shot at? So you- [laughs] ... were running away from these guys when they shot- What's his name again? I forgot it. Jamie. Jamie. You can call him Young Jamie. Jamie, one more time, son, I'm gonna ask you what your name is. [laughs] Okay? All right, one more. I told you three times, right? Uh... All right, I got you down now. So this same place, why'd you keep getting broken into at this one place? I'm out in the middle of nowhere. I'm Terry Bradshaw. They wanna come in, they wanna steal my- Oh. Another guy came down, he stole all the tr- he, he stole all my stuff out of my garage, all the, all the, uh, um, um, the, um, chainsaw. He got all the kinda tools and stuff that he could go and sell. Mm, okay. Just wipe me out. No security? No, I was... No, none. No security system, nothing? No. Nothing. I got dogs now. And, and now I, I have had, since Tammy and I, 22 years now, and I got a guard dog. But I won't, I will not leave my wife at home. My wife, my wife and I in 22 years have been apart two days. I will not leave without my wife. What kind of guard dog did you get? German shepherd. I got him from- Good dog ... Wayne Simanovich in South Carolina. Okay, so you got a trained dog. I got a badass dog. Yeah. His name is Legend. Yeah. Then I bought him a, I got a, a female this year. Her name is, um, we named her after the Viking character, Freya.
- JRJoe Rogan
Ah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Frey the queen.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Freyja. So I'm gonna breed those, 'cause I'm tired of spending $20,000 for... So I'm gonna raise my guard dog.
- JRJoe Rogan
Nice.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Nice. Real- And you know what's great about them? They're guard dogs.
- JRJoe Rogan
Mm-hmm.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You don't play with them.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You don't play with... You don't rough them, you don't grab them, you don't tackle them, you-
- JRJoe Rogan
They do work
- TBTerry Bradshaw
... no. Those, they, they don't mess around.
- JRJoe Rogan
Right.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
They don't mess around. They're serious.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
They're serious.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
They're soldiers.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Very se- Yeah, exactly.
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah. Well-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You got a dog?
- JRJoe Rogan
... it sucks. Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
What do you got?
- JRJoe Rogan
I have a Golden Retriever. He's-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I love them
- JRJoe Rogan
... they're great.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I mean-
- JRJoe Rogan
But he, he ain't guarding shit.
- 2:18:48 – 2:34:24
Corporate speaking: how Terry built a 40+ year keynote career (and why he improvises)
- JRJoe Rogan
Yeah.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I gotta have a job. I gotta go put a suit on.
- JRJoe Rogan
Well, when you're, if you have to travel... You were saying that you give corporate speeches.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Right.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, what do you do? Like, what are the, what are those about?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Speeches.
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, what, what do you speak about?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Well, I'm talking to a bank Wednesday morning, so I'm preparing a bank speech. And then-
- JRJoe Rogan
Like, what do you say to, like, what do you say to a bank, to a bunch of bankers?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Uh, I know what, I know-
- JRJoe Rogan
Is it about leadership? Like, what is it-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I know... Yeah, some of it's about leadership. It's about, uh, it's, it bas- it's basically all the things that I know, Joe, have to do with, um, ambition, dreams, drive, goals, failure, overcoming failure, how to deal with failure, how to rise, how to deal with success, how to treat people. So it's a little bit of motivational, a little bit of psychology, like you used earli- earlier with me. Um-
- JRJoe Rogan
When did I use psychology with you?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You know, you know when you did it.
- JRJoe Rogan
[laughs]
- TBTerry Bradshaw
You know. Right. Hey, Bernie, Bernie. He knows.
- JRJoe Rogan
Bernie. [laughs]
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Um, so it's-
- JRJoe Rogan
And so you-
- TBTerry Bradshaw
So I'll build it up
- JRJoe Rogan
... do different ones for different kind of corporations.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
And it's got a lot... Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
So it's like, kinda like a team-building thing. They get together and you do speeches.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Depends on what they want.
- JRJoe Rogan
Interesting.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
Yeah.
- JRJoe Rogan
When did you start doing that?
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I've been doing it, uh, 43 years.
- JRJoe Rogan
Really? Wow.
- TBTerry Bradshaw
I know. It's amazing, isn't it?
