    1. NA

    2. JR

Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day. (energetic music) We're up. Mr. Rutten, good to see you, sir.

    3. BR

      Been a while.

    4. JR

      It's been a while.

    5. BR

      Yeah.

    6. JR

Yeah, it was exciting running into you out here-

    7. BR

      Yeah.

    8. JR

      ... in Texas. You're a Texas resident.

    9. BR

Texas, I got a hat and everything.

    10. JR

      (laughs)

    11. BR

      I need a belt buckle.

    12. JR

Did you get a hat? (laughs)

    13. BR

(laughs) Oh, yeah, yeah. I got the boots-

    14. JR

      (laughs)

    15. BR

... and I rode a longhorn for, uh-

    16. JR

      Good sh- (laughs)

    17. BR

... in, where was it? In the, in this little village here somewhere, B- Banderas. Like a big, big freaking longhorn.

    18. JR

You got on one of those things?

    19. BR

Oh, I got one, yeah. I dro- rode one, yeah.

    20. JR

Did they let you ride him, or they try to buck you off?

    21. BR

He, no, he, he said this, this guy is, uh, hanging out with kids, like 6-year-olds.

    22. JR

      Oh.

    23. BR

      He's very, very calm, so.

    24. JR

      Yeah.

    25. BR

      Yeah.

    26. JR

Those longhorns are wild, huh? Longhorns are insane.

    27. BR

Dude, it's crazy, if you see it. Giant... Yeah.

    28. JR

      Yeah.

    29. BR

Yeah, everybody, the whole street will stop, like, again.

    30. JR

When did you, uh, come out here?

  2. 3:206:43

Self-defense rabbit hole: Tasers, stopping power, and carry guns

    1. JR

      Well, they're armed.

    2. BR

      (laughs)

    3. JR

      (laughs)

    4. BR

      They'll help, right? You know?

    5. JR

      It helps a lot.

    6. BR

It's like on a plane, everybody should get a little baseball bat, you know?

    7. JR

      (laughs)

    8. BR

When they walk in, you know?

    9. JR

"I'm gonna hide you in the plane." Yeah.

    10. BR

      Everybody got a-

    11. JR

      Or a Taser.

    12. BR

      ... really... Or a Taser.

    13. JR

      Yeah, just so...

    14. BR

Yeah, but a Taser with me, and at the time, when I was... You know, okay, so a friend of mine, Holt McCallany, you know, from Mindhunter, that actor, he, uh, he gave me a Taser. So a- at, at my birthday, I open it up, I grab the Taser, I put the battery in, and I'm looking up, and not a single person is in the room.

    15. JR

      (laughs)

    16. BR

      Everybody ran out. You see?

    17. JR

(laughs) 'Cause they think you're gonna try it on-

    18. BR

      Oh, 100%.

    19. JR

      (laughs)

    20. BR

Any person I see, I'm gonna try it. So I would do that on the plane as well. (laughs)

    21. JR

      (laughs)

    22. BR

It's immediately... (laughs) Yeah. It's the funniest thing ever. I go, "Where is everybody?" Yeah.

    23. JR

      Did you tase anybody yet?

    24. BR

      No, no.

    25. JR

      No one?

    26. BR

      You know-

    27. JR

      Not even yourself?

    28. BR

... I still think they... I really, I wanna try it. I gotta go-

    29. JR

I would just jab my thigh one time, just to see what's up.

    30. BR

Oh, that I did. I didn't even own my hand.

  3. 6:437:53

Texas gun laws and unintended consequences

    1. JR

      Everything is legal here.

    2. BR

Everything is legal. (laughs) Yeah, yeah. It's amazing. (laughs)

    3. JR

Literally everything. You can have concealed carry, is just your constitutional right.

    4. BR

      Yeah.

    5. JR

      Yeah.

    6. BR

Yeah. Don't have to take care of anything.

    7. JR

Amazing how friendly everyone is because there.

    8. BR

      Yeah.

    9. JR

I'm not advocating for the... I'm not saying that's the good thing or a bad thing.

    10. BR

      Yeah.

    11. JR

      I'm just saying it's a thing.

    12. BR

It's, listen, when other people have it, uh, if, if, it's bad people-

    13. JR

People are less likely to get crazy.

    14. BR

Yeah, also, but if, if, if bad people have 'em, uh, I wanna live in a gun-free society. Uh, yeah. As long as they have 'em, I have 'em, it's very simple.

    15. JR

Yeah. Although there was a very sad story out here, where a guy, someone was trying to break into his yard or something like that, or someone climbed his fence, and he went out in his own ya- I guess someone called the police or he called the police, and he went out into his own yard with an AR. And when the cops saw him, the cops shot him.

    16. BR

      Oh, gee.

    17. JR

      Yeah.

    18. BR

      Yeah.

    19. JR

      In his own fucking ...

    20. BR

      Backyard.

    21. JR

      Yeah, very sad.

    22. BR

Yep. Well, that's, (laughs) that's a lesson. Don't walk around with an AR in the middle of the night.

    23. JR

Well, when you see the cops, put that motherfucker down.

    24. BR

      Yeah.

    25. JR

Yeah. I don't, I don't know what the circumstances were, obviously.

    26. BR

      Yeah.

    27. JR

      But, uh ...

    28. BR

      Sad for the family-

    29. JR

      Yeah.

    30. BR

That's the first thing I think about 'em.

  4. 7:5310:20

Karate Combat: what it is, why it works, and how it started

    1. JR

So, um, so how is Karate Combat, man? I love it.

    2. BR

      I, I just came back-

    3. JR

I, I have been watching, I've been watching a lot. I saw James Vick fought in Karate Combat.

    4. BR

      Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    5. JR

And a lot of, uh, you know, a lot of glory guys fight in Karate Combat now. It's a-

    6. BR

James just wanted to invite me for hawk hunting. (laughs) I go, "I'm into it."

    7. JR

      Oh, yeah.

    8. BR

"I'm in. I would love to do that," uh. I just came back yesterday from Ar- uh, from, uh, from Miami. It was a great show. Uh-

    9. JR

I gotta get out to one of these.

    10. BR

      You have to.

    11. JR

      When is the next one?

    12. BR

      Uh, June 24th.

    13. JR

      Where at?

    14. BR

Uh, I think Miami this one. It's Miami or Orlando.

    15. JR

June 24th. Give me an excuse to go back to Miami, 'cause I like Miami.

    16. BR

Man, if you would, because they've been asking us for such a long time, you know, it, it, it's great.

    17. JR

      Maybe I'll take the missus.

    18. BR

And he expe- You know, es- if you go June 24th, I'm, I'm, I'm planning on to take my wife as well.

    19. JR

      Oh, really?

    20. BR

Yeah, I wanna take her more on trips now because, you know, all the time, crazy times are over, you know.

    21. JR

      Yeah.

    22. BR

And now it's, uh, and let's enjoy a little bit, uh, and a few days-

    23. JR

      Don't you appreciate that now?

    24. BR

      So much better.

    25. JR

Oh, you can just get on a plane, no mask, everybody's happy.

    26. BR

Oh. No, but also with m- me, my, my crazy, freaking, uh, like, okay, 15 years ago, you know, I would come home at eight o'clock in the morning completely drunk, and then nine o'clock, I, I got a flight. Now, I'm walking at the airport at six in the morning, I go, "I'm feeling great." You know?

    27. JR

      Sober.

    28. BR

      Sober.

    29. JR

      Sober boss.

    30. BR

Not, not drinking. How crazy is that?

  5. 10:2011:07

Rules and geometry: the pit walls, “down” definitions, and ground strikes

    1. JR

And then it's, uh, when they go to the ground, they can punch them on the ground for 10 seconds, is that what it is?

    2. BR

      Five.

    3. JR

      Five seconds?

    4. BR

      Five seconds.

    5. JR

      Yeah.

    6. BR

Yeah, George was, uh, with me. George St-Pierre. He's one of the hosts, uh, as well as, um, uh, the, the Wonderboy, uh, Lyoto Machida, you know. But he, he was, he was advocating about three seconds.

    7. JR

      Hmm.

    8. BR

I go, "Why? Five seconds is already a short time. I think you need to ..." He says, "But three, then they, they probably hit harder," you know. I go, uh, whatever hi- his reasoning is, but, you know. I don't know, but it's a great rule to have. That's first of all. We haven't seen a knockout yet. Uh, there's take-downs, so you can use the pit, there's 45-degree angle walls, so you can literally walk up there and then drop a guy, which we already saw-

    9. JR

      Well, you've had knockouts.

    10. BR

(clears throat) Oh yeah, we had a lot of knockouts.

    11. JR

What do you mean by you haven't seen a knockout? You mean on the ground?

    12. BR

      Oh, ground and pound.

    13. JR

      Oh, ground and pound.

    14. BR

      Ground and pound knockout.

    15. JR

No- no ground and pound knockouts here?

    16. BR

      Not yet.

    17. JR

      Interesting.

  6. 11:0727:12

Watching clips: point fighters adapting, knockouts, and distance control

    1. BR

Well, we had the, Elijah Averill just came in. He's a point karate guy. And he was, uh ... I actually have some clips. Um, he's the guy who trained with Raymond Daniels.

    2. JR

      Oh.

    3. BR

And everybody was speaking about him, he's gonna be great. Dude, y- yeah, you wanna watch this one.

    4. JR

      Is this him right here?

    5. BR

Here we go. Okay, so this i- this is the first time.

    6. JR

      Whoo!

    7. BR

This is the karate guy on the right, Abdullah Ibrahim, and it's, that's, uh, Joshua Quahagen and he thought he's gonna ...

    8. JR

      Oh.

    9. BR

      You see? Karate guys.

    10. JR

      Whoa. Show that again.

    11. BR

      Boom.

    12. JR

Show that again. These guys with their hands down like that.

    13. BR

      Yep. Yeah.

    14. JR

      Oh, left hook.

    15. BR

      Left hook.

    16. JR

Left hook. Six. Wow. They won the fight with a left hook. Watch the wing.

    17. BR

And then there is on this, um, there's another clip there with the h-

    18. JR

They have a Bitcoin logo in the center?

    19. BR

It was at the time, yes.

    20. JR

Oh, these are Wall Street guys. (laughs)

    21. BR

      This- (laughs)

    22. JR

      (laughs)

    23. BR

      It's a long time ago.

    24. JR

I love the banked edges too. I really do like that. I don't like the cage. I feel like it just gets in, even in MMA, I feel like it gets in the way of so much. Look at this. Boom. Oh, beautiful left hook. Over the shoulder. Didn't even see it coming.

    25. BR

You know, and the great thing is, if you, if you fall against the wall, you're not considered to down, uh, to be down, so you can do anything to your opponent.

    26. JR

      Hmm.

    27. BR

That is down, once you're on the ground, ground.

    28. JR

      Yeah.

    29. BR

But on the wall, you're still okay. There's another clip, um, uh, s- with, um, Elijah Averill. Here's the guy, the point karate guy. You, okay, watch this.

    30. NA

      Which one is it?

  7. 27:1234:33

Fighter psychology: ‘the it factor,’ pressure, and why family in the audience changes everything

    1. BR

Yeah. Guys like that, man. That's why we have guys like Israel Adesanya.

    2. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    3. BR

You know, the way... For him to lose and then to come back, you see? I think that's more powerful than any other-

    4. JR

      Yes.

    5. BR

... person out there, you know? You can be undefeated, it's nice, dandy, but, you know, show people you're human. And coming back from that, and then the... And it was rope-a-doping, right?

    6. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    7. BR

I mean, and my buddy right away, he sits next to me, he goes, "He's doing... He's rope-a-doping."

    8. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    9. BR

You know, he's... Well, cagey doping, whatever you wanna call it, offensive doping, but he was still looking, waiting just for the right moment.

    10. JR

      Oh, it was amazing.

    11. BR

      Amazing.

    12. JR

      It's amazing.

    13. BR

      Yeah.

    14. JR

Well, he had gotten very close to stopping him in one of the kickboxing fights, and then dropped him with seconds to go, like one second to go in the first round of their MMA fight.

    15. BR

      Yeah.

    16. JR

So he kinda knew he could get to him.

    17. BR

      Yeah.

    18. JR

But it's that motherfucker is so big.

    19. BR

Dude, he was standing next to me. He came to Karate Combat. He's a j-... He's like 235 pounds.

    20. JR

      He is huge.

    21. BR

(laughs) This is great. All these guys.

    22. JR

      Yeah.

    23. BR

I'm next to Jones. I mean, uh, freaking Tito, everybody's giant.

    24. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    25. BR

      It's crazy.

    26. JR

      I know.

    27. BR

      It's all length. Ian Garry.

    28. JR

      Oh, yeah.

    29. BR

I mean, you're standing next to him. You just hang out.

    30. JR

      He's so tall.

  8. 34:3351:18

Dark turns: suicide stories, post-fight depression, and identity after fighting

    1. BR

And then, by the way, this is also funny. She, we're, we're doing the laundry, she's hanging laundry on the balcony. And you, it, it was in Japan, in Tokyo. And suddenly she goes, "Oh, my God. Somebody jumped off the building." And I'm laughing and I, I think it's a joke. And she goes, "No, no, really." So I'm looking and there's this guy on the floor in like a really bad position. You know, that he committed suicide. He just jumped. And then you see people coming by. They just kick him and they keep walking. And then suddenly there's this little, uh, ambulance thing comes. They grab him up, put him away. But it was the wildest thing, like-

    2. JR

      So she saw him jump?

    3. BR

She saw, saw him falling down. Boom. Yeah.

    4. JR

      Whew!

    5. BR

      Yeah.

    6. JR

That's a wild way to go.

    7. BR

Yeah. They say that every mo- the moment they jump, they, they know it's a mistake. That one guy who jumped off the bridge in New York-

    8. JR

      San Francisco.

    9. BR

      Uh, San Francisco.

    10. JR

      Golden Gate.

    11. BR

      And he survived.

    12. JR

      Yeah. Yeah.

    13. BR

The, the, the freaking, uh, what's it?

    14. JR

      Yeah.

    15. BR

The flipper brought him back up, right?

    16. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    17. BR

Unbelievable. He said, "You, you regret it the moment you step off." And, uh, I-

    18. JR

      Of course.

    19. BR

      Yeah.

    20. JR

E- well, of course. You know you're gonna die.

    21. BR

      Yeah.

    22. JR

I mean, I had a friend who did that in San Francisco.

    23. BR

      And he died?

    24. JR

      He died. Yeah.

    25. BR

      Oh, damn.

    26. JR

Yeah. He struggled with depression for a long time and then, uh, someone sent him- sent me a message that he, Tony killed himself. I was like, "Oh, no." And I was like, "How did he do it?" And they were like, "He jumped off the bridge." I was like, "Oh..."

    27. BR

Yeah. Because that's about how, that's at least 50 seconds-

    28. JR

      Oh.

    29. BR

... because it's all long bridge. That's, uh...

    30. JR

      That's a big fucking drop.

  9. 51:181:01:50

Injuries, recovery, and the promise (and politics) of stem cells & peptides

    1. JR

And that's, that's the same injury that got aggravated when you did, what was it? Uh, Sons of Anarchy? When you were doing that movie? Or the TV show?

    2. BR

      Mm-hmm.

    3. JR

What was it that you did that wound up, you, where you had to get the next few years...

    4. BR

      Oh, that was Lights Out.

    5. JR

      Lights Out.

    6. BR

Yeah, the TV show. Uh, there was this moment that the lead actor, uh, "I'm gonna beat him." And he says, "This is, it's not realistic. This boss, you know, he should come up with something. He, I do something if, something illegal, whatever."

    7. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    8. BR

"Because otherwise, there's no way I can beat this guy." And I said, "What about this? I jump on your back, you know? I forget to put the hooks in, and I slide off. I spike myself, so this is all on me."

    9. JR

Oh, my gosh. It's your idea.

    10. BR

Yeah. And then, uh, and then I'm dizzy. You hit me in the throat, whatever, and then, uh, "You wanna do that?" I go, "Sure." You know you're invincible at that moment, you know?

    11. JR

      Hmm.

    12. BR

You think. And I did it twice, and it was ju- it was just this height that I just dropped. But I remember, like, two months later, looking in the mirror and looking at my wife. I go, "Is my arm getting smaller? (laughs) This is weird."

    13. JR

      Hmm.

    14. BR

And I wasn't using it because I had a lot of pain in the shoulder. And then I had to do an autograph session in, uh, in Boston for the UFC actually. They flew me out, and then I went to the doctor. I said, "Can, I gotta put a cortisone shot in here. There's no way I can do this weekend." You know? And he put the cortisone shot in there, and so I now could use it. Because before, I didn't use it because it was hurting, and I couldn't lift my carry-on luggage. Freaked me out. I go like, "Whoa, watch out." My other hand, I lift. I go, "Okay, so it's my arm. Something's going on." I thought I lost all power, and that's when I realized it was my freaking neck, you know.

    15. JR

How is it coming back now? Is it...

    16. BR

Nothing. Its supporting muscles, they're doing it. You know, if I lift this up, you'll see, uh, you see, it's all gone here. See?

    17. JR

      Oh, wow.

    18. BR

      It's all atrophied, yeah.

    19. JR

      Wow. That's crazy.

    20. BR

But it was, my whole arm was like this. It was a stick. So I got this, biceps is coming very slowly. It's coming down. But literally, I started with two pounds. I couldn't pull the trigger from a gun.

    21. JR

      Really?

    22. BR

Yeah. So going, listen, I used to do nine one-arm pull-ups. Like, people, I would do this in the subway with the other fighters. "Hey, show the pull-ups again." Not stretched arm, but from here, I could, like, nine one-arm pull-ups. And going from that not able to grab the freaking water out of the fridge.

    23. JR

      Ugh.

    24. BR

That was scary. That was very scary. And then I went from two-pound curls, and now I'm doing 15 now. And they say, "Oh, that's great." Yeah, over 12 years. (laughs) So...

    25. JR

Fif- so you went from two-pound curls to 15-pound curls?

    26. BR

Yeah, but, uh, like I said, so over 12 years. I gotta do 45s I have in my left, and then the little ones.

    27. JR

I know you went to Ways2Well, and they, they gave you some stem cells.

    28. BR

      Yes.

    29. JR

And you've, you've done some stem cells. Uh, where, where did you go before that? Did you go to Panama?

    30. BR

I did Panama before, all the way back. It didn't work anything for my, uh, neck injury. Uh, because apparently, there's a nerve blocked, and it can't unblock a nerve, you know? It's, uh, it can only do so much.

Tech tangent: implants, social credit fears, EVs, and Tesla self-driving

    1. BR

It's, doesn't stop. There's whole talks with the, uh, uh, Mr. Kaku you had, you know, with the, the quantum computers and all that stuff.

    2. JR

      Michio Kaku, yeah.

    3. BR

      And it's all gonna be-

    4. JR

      Yeah.

    5. BR

... probably in our bodies, right?

    6. JR

      Yeah.

    7. BR

It's... something like that eventually is going to happen.

    8. JR

Yeah.... what do you think about that, boss? (laughs)

    9. BR

I'm, uh, I'm very scared of that because they can hack me then.

    10. JR

      Yeah. (laughs)

    11. BR

      I don't think if you-

    12. JR

I know. That's... I like how you go right to that.

    13. BR

      Oh, yeah.

    14. JR

      Yeah.

    15. BR

That's what I would do if I'm bad guy. I would go hack him.

    16. JR

      That's a real problem.

    17. BR

      Yeah.

    18. JR

It's a real problem because that's what the, I think, the people that control the world, they would ge- genuine- genuinely like to have a one-world government, one economy that the entire world shares, a digital currency that goes with the social credit schism.

    19. BR

Yep, so they can turn it off and on.

    20. JR

And, and they can do whatever the fuck they want with you.

    21. BR

      Yep.

    22. JR

BJ Penn just made some, uh, some qu- post about that. If you have an electric car and you get arrested or if they're looking for you, they can literally tell your electric car to drive to the police station.

    23. BR

      Whoa.

    24. JR

      Yeah.

    25. BR

      Yeah. No.

    26. JR

      Fuck that.

    27. BR

      (laughs) Yeah.

    28. JR

      (laughs)

    29. BR

I would never go full electric. I don't think it's, uh... You know, if it, if you have... Get an electric but also get gas on the side.

    30. JR

Yeah. I have, I have an electric car that I love. I have a Tesla and it's fucking magic.
