    2. JR

Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day. (energetic music) We're up. Mr. Rutten, good to see you, sir.

    3. BR

      Been a while.

    4. JR

      It's been a while.

    5. BR

      Yeah.

    6. JR

Yeah, it was exciting running into you out here-

    7. BR

      Yeah.

    8. JR

      ... in Texas. You're a Texas resident.

    9. BR

Texas, I got a hat and everything.

    10. JR

      (laughs)

    11. BR

      I need a belt buckle.

    12. JR

Did you get a hat? (laughs)

    13. BR

(laughs) Oh, yeah, yeah. I got the boots-

    14. JR

      (laughs)

    15. BR

... and I rode a longhorn for, uh-

    16. JR

      Good sh- (laughs)

    17. BR

... in, where was it? In the, in this little village here somewhere, B- Banderas. Like a big, big freaking longhorn.

    18. JR

You got on one of those things?

    19. BR

Oh, I got one, yeah. I dro- rode one, yeah.

    20. JR

Did they let you ride him, or they try to buck you off?

    21. BR

He, no, he, he said this, this guy is, uh, hanging out with kids, like 6-year-olds.

    22. JR

      Oh.

    23. BR

      He's very, very calm, so.

    24. JR

      Yeah.

    25. BR

      Yeah.

    26. JR

Those longhorns are wild, huh? Longhorns are insane.

    27. BR

Dude, it's crazy, if you see it. Giant... Yeah.

    28. JR

      Yeah.

    29. BR

Yeah, everybody, the whole street will stop, like, again.

    30. JR

When did you, uh, come out here?

  2. 15:0030:00

    Horrible. The way- …

    1. JR

      one.

    2. BR

      Horrible. The way-

    3. JR

And that was also a guy much bigger than him too. Like Roger-

    4. BR

      Oh.

    5. JR

... fought 155 in the UFC and then he goes over. And in ONE, he's fighting these very big guys.

    6. BR

      And he's already messed up.

    7. JR

      (clears throat) Mm-hmm.

    8. BR

He's falling literally on the ground for his balance.

    9. JR

And then he got soccer kicked.

    10. BR

And then he got soccer kicked full... Yeah. That was scary.

    11. JR

Find, find that 'cause it was one of the worst KOs, you know. And Roger, man, what an interesting story that is. And kind of a sad story because he was very, very promising. He was on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

    12. BR

But here's the thing. There's the, the, the curse, right?

    13. JR

      Hmm.

    14. BR

They always talk about the curse. The Sports Illustrated curse, the cover?

    15. JR

Mike Tyson was on the cover of Sports Illustrated too, though. (laughs)

    16. BR

Okay. Forget about it. Check that. (laughs)

    17. JR

      Kid Dynamite.

    18. BR

      Screw this. (laughs)

    19. JR

It's in my office at home.

    20. BR

      Yeah.

    21. JR

      When he was 19.

    22. BR

Oh, okay. Yeah. No, no, no, no, no.

    23. JR

That, that curse don't mean shit. (laughs)

    24. BR

For, for, for him, (laughs) for him, it doesn't.

    25. JR

      Yeah.

    26. BR

      Yeah.

    27. JR

      Where's, I mean...

    28. BR

      He's a special guy.

    29. JR

Yeah. But the Roger Huerta thing, what happened was he ran afou-... Some people were talking to him, or I don't know. He just... Him and the UFC didn't get along all of a sudden.

    30. BR

      Yeah.

  3. 30:0045:00

    We get, uh, Mike…

    1. JR

But they do, and they think about it.

    2. BR

We get, uh, Mike Perry in the audience, uh, f- uh, uh, Andrei Arlovski was there also for the-

    3. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    4. BR

... for the Karate Combat thing. Mike Perry, that's one of those guys, if you're a promoter, grab that guy.

    5. JR

      Oh, my God.

    6. BR

Great on the microphone, great interviews. He's, he's either gonna get knocked out or he's gonna knock somebody out.

    7. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    8. BR

He will roll the dice. You know, he's the perfect guy for any organization.

    9. JR

Well, what he's doing now in bare-knuckle fighting is amazing.

    10. BR

      Yeah. Yeah.

    11. JR

Knocking out Luke Perry like that, stopping him, you know, uh, s- beating up Michael Venom Page. Who saw that coming?

    12. BR

      Yeah.

    13. JR

He's just so fucking tough that there's something about the pain that comes with bare knuckle that just suits him.

    14. BR

      It's a mental thing.

    15. JR

      100%.

    16. BR

I, I think also, we were talking about, uh, uh... Well, Louis Rocha actually was, uh, talking about this, the lightweight guy from Karate Combat. He said, "I'm gonna win this fight because I fought... I was been in a lot of street fights." He said, "I have a different mentality than his opponent, Bruno Souza." And he has a nice upbringing. He's a great fighter, but he doesn't have that little meanness in him at the moment- Mm-hmm.

    17. JR

      ... when you need it.

    18. BR

      Mm-hmm.

    19. JR

You know, the controlled aggression like, uh, Bruce Lee would talk about.

    20. BR

      Mm-hmm.

    21. JR

I think that's a big thing as well.

    22. BR

It's certainly a big thing. Skill is everything, right? But then the mental aspect of it, sometimes trump skill if you could overcome those sk-... Those moments where the opponent is beating you.

    23. JR

      Yeah.

    24. BR

If you could just f- find your openings and then put it on them. Some people are great when they're the hammer and not so great when they're the nail.

    25. JR

Yeah. Yeah, I was talking with George as well. It's what... Bringing your fans. First time my mom and dad are here f- watching me fight, I go, "Oh, I don't know if that's a good thing."

    26. BR

      Mm-hmm.... could be really good.

    27. JR

      Children is what gets me.

    28. BR

      Oh, the worst.

    29. JR

Yeah. Children, when you see people bring their children-

    30. BR

      Ugh.

  4. 45:001:00:00

    Yeah. …

    1. BR

      um, blessed-

    2. JR

      Yeah.

    3. BR

... but still become a freaking champ, like Tim Sylvia.

    4. JR

      Yes.

    5. BR

I mean, if you see him walk, his toes are inside a little bit. His motoric skills-

    6. JR

      Chicken leg, yeah.

    7. BR

      ... are not that great.

    8. JR

      Yeah, pigeon-toed, yeah.

    9. BR

      Freaking world champion.

    10. JR

      Yup.

    11. BR

And those guys are way harder to beat than a guy who is... It's easy for them because instead of... I, if I have to work for something two hours, and they have to work six hours for the same thing to, to get to that point, they don't wanna let that go. Those guys are the worst guys to fight. They're the toughest.

    12. JR

      Hmm.

    13. BR

So, it always comes with something. And that's why it's, figured out in the middle. I know I have talent, but I'm not like a BJ Penn kind of talent.

    14. JR

      Right.

    15. BR

You know, that is like exceptional, three years black belt, and then backing it up by beating-

    16. JR

      Three years, wins the Mundials.

    17. BR

... three years world champion. (laughs) That's right.

    18. JR

      Which is insane.

    19. BR

      Yeah.

    20. JR

Imagine you meet a guy. You're like, "What are you doing?" "Oh, I'm gonna go take my first jujitsu class." "Oh, good luck with that." Then you meet him three years later.

    21. BR

      (laughs)

    22. JR

"What are you doing?" "Oh, I just won the world championships."

    23. BR

      Yeah. (laughs)

    24. JR

      "In what?"

    25. BR

      In the black belt division.

    26. JR

      "In what?" (laughs) In jujitsu.

    27. BR

      Yeah.

    28. JR

      What?

    29. BR

      Yeah.

    30. JR

      And what, what rank?

  5. 1:00:001:06:50

    Right. …

    1. BR

like in a, in a karate gi, hit a hip. And it was before a fight. So I'm c- arriving at the, at the bankers, uh, for fighting, um, and, uh, the, the, the, the judge, who was, the judge was a really good freaking body mechanic guy. He, I mean, ev- ev- everybody from around the world would go to that guy to have him, uh, look at him. Because they w- he was just really good with, uh, with tai chi and whatever he did, uh, what is it? Acupressure, all that kinda stuff. And he went to me and he says, "Okay, uh, give me your hand." I relaxed it, and he pushed on three spots. I was like, "Ah, shit, shit, shit." He goes, "No, just..." And he wiped it out. He does it again. I go, "Okay." Tap, tap, tap. He says, "Okay, how is it now?" And I go like... (fists thudding) I go, do... It's com- completely gone. Like, zero pain. Not even a, a hint of it. And he just opened up the pain blockages that he said, that, uh, he was pressing. And he was on the money, man. He's t- go, go, "Ow, ow, ow." And the second time was already less, and the third time, he says, "That should be good now." I go, "Wow." That's so weird.

    2. JR

      Right.

    3. BR

      (taps chest) Nothing. Zero.

    4. JR

      That's so weird.

    5. BR

      Yeah, yeah.

    6. JR

What is it like now to rely on your left hand? 'Cause now you're thinking about, if you're gonna fuck somebody up, you're gonna left-hand them. You're not gonna throw a straight right anymore.

    7. BR

Well, no, no, no. My pr-

    8. JR

      No problem?

    9. BR

      My biceps, triceps still work.

    10. JR

      Oh!

    11. BR

      Oh, no.

    12. JR

      Okay.

    13. BR

I will knock you out. (laughs)

    14. JR

      (laughs)

    15. BR

And my, and my uppercuts is gonna be make-

    16. JR

So, the punch, the punches is still good? The uppercut-

    17. BR

Oh, yeah. The uppercuts more of an issue? The uppercuts a little less.

    18. JR

      Right.

    19. BR

Yeah, a little less because the shoulder-

    20. JR

And the shoulder a little less.

    21. BR

... but the shoulder also came back. Also the hook. You know, I, I tell people when I'm, I'm, I'm doing, uh, shadow boxing, I say, "Don't look at my right arm, because it's probably gonna be a little off."

    22. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    23. BR

"Look at the left, what I'm doing." But no, my crosses are there, so thankfully my triceps came back.

    24. JR

      Maybe in 12 more years-

    25. BR

      (laughs)

    26. JR

... you got a full bicep.

    27. BR

      I- i- who knows?

    28. JR

      Well, I mean, maybe less.

    29. BR

I don't even focus on it anymore.

    30. JR

If, I mean, if they figure out some way to fix... I mean, it's just, like, the, the medical, uh, the advances that are happening are so magical.
