EVERY SPOKEN WORD

  1. 0:013:15

Afro talk, grappling escapes, and women’s fight gear choices

    1. JR

      ... two. Good?

    2. AH

      Yeah.

    3. JR

      Hello, Angela. What's going on?

    4. AH

      Hi. What's up?

    5. JR

I was amazed that you could get those headphones on. I was wondering.

    6. AH

      (laughs) Yeah.

    7. JR

That's ... You got the best Afro in the game, for sure.

    8. AH

      It, uh-

    9. JR

      Who's even close?

    10. AH

      It, uh, condenses. Um ...

    11. JR

      (laughs)

    12. AH

I mean, Caceres got me beat, though. Alex Caceres.

    13. JR

      Yeah?

    14. AH

      Yes, yeah. That's-

    15. JR

He do- he gets crazy, yeah. (laughs)

    16. AH

That's my goal, is ... Those are my hair goals, is to get, like, a nice, big, like, fluffy 'fro like his.

    17. JR

When he fights, I always wonder, like, I get... That seems like it would be harder to pull out of things, don't you think?

    18. AH

No, it's actually ... It's kind of like a ... You know, uh, those connecting joints where it's like, it's kinda like a big ball that goes in-

    19. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    20. AH

... but, like, when you pull it out, it's like ... I don't know.

    21. JR

      It pulls out easier.

    22. AH

      It pulls out easier, yeah.

    23. JR

      Oh.

    24. AH

It's kind of like a, like a joint like that. So, like, uh, you think you have a good grip, but then the hair just like whoosh, you know? Like, it condenses.

    25. JR

Well, especially, like, if you put grease in your hair or, or hair conditioning, or anything that makes it extra slippery, right?

    26. AH

Yeah, I guess. But like, it's, it's pretty ... It's just the fact that it can go small even though it doesn't look like it. I feel like people think they have a better grip than they do.

    27. JR

      Hmm.

    28. AH

Like, I've ... Like my, uh, I think my title fight in Invicta, uh, the girl locked on, like, maybe three or four guillotines, and every time, I was just like whoosh.

    29. JR

      (laughs)

    30. AH

You know (laughs) like, it just, like, popped out. (laughs) And people kept going, "It's deep. It's deep." But like, I, I swear to God, my Afro gets me out of, uh, tight situations.

  2. 3:154:50

Wardrobe malfunctions, Leslie Smith toughness, and the MMA union idea

    1. AH

But, uh, I don't know. I always, uh, had this joke with, like, my teammates that I was gonna get famous by being, like, the nip- the nip slipper. Like (laughs) -

    2. JR

      (laughs)

    3. AH

... I would use, like, certain, like, Muay Thai clinch techniques to just like whoop, pop the girl's boob out.

    4. JR

      (laughs)

    5. AH

So I'd always get to fight the popular girls because, like, they knew, "Oh, she's fighting Paige VanZant. We're gonna see some Paige VanZant titties," you know? (laughs)

    6. JR

      (laughs)

    7. AH

And that would just, like, you know, raise my stocks, so ... I haven't done it though, but ... (laughs)

    8. JR

But you've thought about it in training?

    9. AH

      I've thought about it.

    10. JR

      Only in training?

    11. AH

Only in train- ... I tried it on the guys in the gym. (laughs)

    12. JR

      (laughs)

    13. AH

Lift their shirt up. "Oops, sorry." (laughs)

    14. JR

Has anybody ever done that on purpose in a fight-

    15. AH

      Uh ...

    16. JR

      ... that you know of?

    17. AH

I don't know. I think the one person it backfired, uh, with was... I don't remember who she was fighting, but Leslie Smith's, uh, boob popped out once.

    18. JR

      Did it really?

    19. AH

Yeah, in a ... in one of her Invicta fights. And she did not give a fuck. Like-

    20. JR

      Oh, she's crazy.

    21. AH

      Yeah, she's crazy.

    22. JR

Her ear was hanging off her head in that Jessica Eyefight.

    23. AH

      Oh my god, yeah.

    24. JR

You could see into her head.

    25. AH

      Yeah, yeah-

    26. JR

      It was cra-

    27. AH

      ... her skull is a-

    28. JR

She was like, "Don't stop the fight! Don't stop the fight!"

    29. AH

      Yeah.

    30. JR

I was like, "This girl is gangster."

  3. 4:507:51

Healthcare gray areas and the reality of training injuries

    1. JR

Does that ... W- what it's ... I, I, I haven't looked into that. Like, I haven't looked at, like, what do they ... what do they want, what are they trying to accomplish, what's not correct that they wanna fix?

    2. AH

Um, I think, um, just any, any grievances that the fighters have in general. So, like, healthcare, um, uh, salary, uh, just things that, uh, everyone kind of agrees on is, like, not good enough yet-

    3. JR

      Right.

    4. AH

... in the UFC. I think those are the things that they're working towards. Um-

    5. JR

How does healthcare work? Are you guys covered in training, or are you only covered for fights?

    6. AH

Um, as far as I know, uh, if you book a fight and you get injured, I think they cover it, but I think it's also a gray area where, like, they could not cover it and they're not legally obligated to fix you.

    7. JR

      Hmm.

    8. AH

Um, but I think in the past, they have. Uh, I'm not sure. I can't think of any, uh, any examples where they haven't, like ...... um, you know, taking care of the medical expenses of, uh, someone who got hurt. But I know, like, a lot of times, fighters don't claim it in time, like, after fights or it's, like, a- a little nagging injury that becomes a big deal further down the line. Um-

    9. JR

And it happened in a fight, but they waited too long?

    10. AH

Yeah, yeah. Either that or just, you know, just wear and tear from training in general.

    11. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    12. AH

Like, you can't, I can't go in for, like, a loose tooth or-

    13. JR

      Right.

    14. AH

... like, a, or like, a, a shoulder that I tore in practice if I wasn't getting ready for a fight. Or-

    15. JR

But that seems so crazy because you're obviously fighting in the UFC. You have a long-term contract.

    16. AH

      Yeah.

    17. JR

You've been fighting in the UFC for years. If you're training, you're training to fight in the UFC.

    18. AH

Yeah, exactly. And, um, I think, uh, I think a- a lot of instances, they still take care of the fighter. But I know, like, if you're, like, on the lower end, if you haven't really-

    19. JR

      Hmm.

    20. AH

... made a name for yourself yet, um, sometimes, you know, even if you just don't ask, like, you don't get taken care of. It's not, like, it's not in your cr- contract once you sign, like, "Oh, I'm gonna fight this many fights." Uh, but there's nothing in there that says, "If I get injured after signing this contract, y- I'm covered medically." So, um-

    21. JR

      (sighs)

    22. AH

So yeah, I think that was, that was the main reason I was like, "Oh, this is a good idea," um, just because, like, I know so many fighters who book fights just to get their injuries taken care of-

    23. JR

      Hmm.

    24. AH

... you know? Um, or they, they'll fight injured and claim an old injury.

    25. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    26. AH

And, like, and that's their way of fixing whatever-

    27. JR

      Yeah.

    28. AH

... they broke during training, so.

    29. JR

      That sucks.

    30. AH

      It's horrible. And-

  4. 7:5113:35

Training as a 115-pound pro: partner size, safety, and learning from TUF

    1. AH

Yeah. Yeah, exactly. And most of my injuries happen outside of camp because I'm either training stupid, training with someone I, who, who I shouldn't be training with, like someone too big or too inexperienced, or, um, or I'm just, like, fucking around. Like, when I'm fighting someone who's my size, it's a lot less likely that I get injured.

    2. JR

      Right.

    3. AH

But when I'm throwing my bones, like you said, at somebody who's way bigger than ... It's easy, I can hurt my hand punching them.

    4. JR

      Right.

    5. AH

You know, break my, break my, like, or break my toe, like, kicking them, you know? And-

    6. JR

But that's, for someone like you who fights at 115 pounds-

    7. AH

      Mm-hmm.

    8. JR

... it's even more difficult, right?

    9. AH

      Yeah.

    10. JR

Because the lack of people that are your size to train with, and you're also training a lot with men.

    11. AH

      Mm-hmm.

    12. JR

And it's, uh, uh, and it's cra- it's crazy because at a professional level, like, you're, you're right there. You know, you just m- beat the shit out of Hannah Cifers. It was a crazy fight.

    13. AH

      Thank you. (laughs)

    14. JR

It was huge. But that was a big fight for you.

    15. AH

      Yeah.

    16. JR

Like, you're, you're in the heat right now.

    17. AH

      Yeah.

    18. JR

      You know? I mean, you're-

    19. AH

      Yeah, yeah.

    20. JR

... you're right there. So for you-

    21. AH

      Yeah, I'm excited.

    22. JR

... you're, you're, you know, you're at the top of the heap in this championship realm, right? And, uh, to train with people that are bigger than you or to take chances like that, like, there's no other sport that would have that.

    23. AH

      Yeah.

    24. JR

      You know?

    25. AH

Yeah, and it's like the lack of women as well.

    26. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    27. AH

You know? Because even if I'm training with, like, a bantamweight, uh, if it's a woman, like, it's not as dangerous as training with, like, some of the bigger guys. Like, the, like, guys and girls are kinda like different sizes. Like, if I'm, if I'm training with a guy who fights at 115, he's gonna be, like, four foot tall.

    28. JR

      Right, right, right.

    29. AH

You know? So, so it's, uh, it's like the weight distr- distribution is different.

    30. JR

      Mm-hmm.

  5. 13:3522:10

Turning the corner: anxiety, the Randa Marcos fight, and present-moment focus

    1. JR

You've, you've obviously gone through some improvements and some change. Like, what's changed with you over the last, like, four or five fights?

    2. AH

      Um ...

    3. JR

Because you've, you've ... You keep getting steadily better, but particularly the last two. I think you should be on a four-fight win streak, because there was-

    4. AH

      Oh, stop it.

    5. JR

But you, you had that one decision-

    6. AH

No, I did too. I did too. Yeah.

    7. JR

      ... with ... I, I don't ... I forget how to pronounce her name.

    8. AH

      Zhou Ning Yan.

    9. JR

Yeah. Is that how you say it?

    10. AH

      It sounds like a cat.

    11. JR

      How do you say it?

    12. AH

Like nng. Zhou ... I, I don't know how to say it, but Zhou Nan-

    13. JR

      But y-

    14. AH

... Zhou Nan Yan, I think.

    15. JR

That's the lady you had in a triangle.

    16. AH

She's on the ... Yeah, she ... And she's on this, uh, card too.

    17. JR

      Oh, okay.

    18. AH

      The Auckland card.

    19. JR

Yeah. I thought that was a bad decision.

    20. AH

      Thank you.

    21. JR

But you, you had her locked up in the tri- so I get ... Sometimes when I, when I do commentary, people get mad at me.

    22. AH

      (laughs)

    23. JR

Like, either the fighters or other people. But that was one where fans of her got mad at me.

    24. AH

      Ah.

    25. JR

Because you w- you guys were right in front.

    26. AH

      Mm-hmm.

    27. JR

And you had her in a triangle, and I was yelling, "Pull the head."

    28. AH

      Oh.

    29. JR

I was yelling, "Pull her head. Pull her head."

    30. AH

      (laughs)

  6. 22:1028:41

Hypnosis, flow state, and making competition feel familiar

    1. JR

Have you ever thought about going to, like, a sports psychologist?

    2. AH

I have, I have. Uh, like, there have, I've tried a couple people in the past, and I really just feel like everyone kinda says the same things.

    3. JR

      Yeah.

    4. AH

Uh, so I feel like if you're getting it from any resource, that's good. Like, I started using, uh, that mindfulness app.

    5. JR

      Oh, okay. Which one?

    6. AH

Uh, I forget what it's called. Um-

    7. JR

      Headspace?

    8. AH

      It's the, yeah, Headspace.

    9. JR

      Okay.

    10. AH

I was gonna say, it's the ones with the cartoons.

    11. JR

      Yeah.

    12. AH

Um, and that, that really helped, uh, just, like, kinda calm my nerves-

    13. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    14. AH

... and keep the anxiety, uh, from, from being crippling.

    15. JR

Sometimes what happens when you go to a coach is the fact that you physically go to someone and you sit down with a ps- a ps- it's like a different level of commitment.

    16. AH

      Uh-huh.

    17. JR

You sit down with this person. This person formulates a strategy for how you address some of the issues that are going on in your mind.

    18. AH

      Mm-hmm.

    19. JR

And then sometimes you can go to a hypnotist, like, uh, Vinny Shorman.

    20. AH

      Yeah, I heard about that.

    21. JR

      Do you know Vinny?

    22. AH

      No, I know.

    23. JR

Vinny Shorman, he, he's fantastic, and he's done a, a lot of, he's, he actually hypnotized me. I asked him to hypnotize me 'cause I wanted to know what it was like.

    24. AH

      All right.

    25. JR

It's very weird. It's very weird. It's like you're there, but you're not really there. It's like you're in a room next to-

    26. AH

      Did he make you, like-

    27. JR

... he didn't touch me. Nothing.

    28. AH

      ... bark?

    29. JR

      No, no, no, no.

    30. AH

      Oh, no. (laughs)

  7. 28:4135:10

Late start origins: from office job to Muay Thai addiction

    1. JR

      How old are you now?

    2. AH

      Um... (laughs)

    3. JR

      You don't wanna lie?

    4. AH

      Uh, yeah, 20-something.

    5. JR

      26?

    6. AH

Yeah, yeah, that's the magic number.

    7. JR

      (laughs)

    8. AH

Uh, no, I'm 34 this year.

    9. JR

      Oh.

    10. AH

      Yeah.

    11. JR

      Well you look great.

    12. AH

      Thank you. (laughs)

    13. JR

      When did you start training?

    14. AH

Um, I s- I did my first Muay Thai class when I turned 24.

    15. JR

      Oh, wow.

    16. AH

Yeah, so I called it my, uh-

    17. JR

Maybe that's the thing, right? Like you don't have the wear and tear of like-

    18. AH

      Yeah.

    19. JR

A lot of people start when they're 10 and-

    20. AH

      Yeah.

    21. JR

... and then by the time they get to 24 they already got-

    22. AH

      They're all jacked up.

    23. JR

      ... MCL all fucked up-

    24. AH

      Mm-hmm.

    25. JR

... and back's a mess and neck hurt.

    26. AH

And it probably stunts your growth too a little bit. I don't know, I, I f- feel like some, something happens.

    27. JR

If you cut weight, it certainly does.

    28. AH

      Yeah.

    29. JR

      Yeah.

    30. AH

Yeah. So yeah, I didn't, I didn't really do any sports after, I guess, middle school. And from-

  8. 35:1052:53

Amateur success, going pro, and the TUF whirlwind

    1. JR

So how long was it between your first class and your first fight?

    2. AH

Hmm. It was about, uh, nine months.

    3. JR

      Wow.

    4. AH

      Yeah. So-

    5. JR

So right away you're like balls deep into this thing.

    6. AH

      Yeah, yeah.

    7. JR

Without ... For lack of better expression. (laughs)

    8. AH

(laughs) What e- I, yeah, I'm like what else deep could I be?

    9. JR

      Yeah. What's-

    10. AH

      Yeah.

    11. JR

... what can a girl do?

    12. AH

      Nah, I was balls deep.

    13. JR

      Ovaries deep?

    14. AH

      Yeah. (laughs)

    15. JR

      Yeah.

    16. AH

Um ...I was, yeah, I was really into it and I hadn't considered fighting yet, but, um, but my coach was like ... It wa- I think it was around the time ... Have you ever t- heard of, uh, the WKAs?

    17. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    18. AH

So it was around the time of that, and he was taking a couple people down. He was like, "Hey, you wanna do WKAs? You wanna have a fight?" And I was like, "Oh, are you sure? Like, are you sure I'm ready?" And it was kinda, uh, halfway because ... Well, I don't know if this is why he asked, but once I said yes, uh, there was a girl that used to train with us who was also doing it in my weight class, and he was like, "Oh." (laughs) "This is gonna be fun."

    19. JR

      (laughs)

    20. AH

So, so yeah, I thought it was cool that he had that confidence in me 'cause the- all the other girls who were in the tournament had been training a lot longer than me, uh, for years even. So, uh, yeah, I was just like, "Okay, let's, let's do it. Let's see what happens." Like, I was scared, but I wa- also wasn't, like, putting all my eggs in that basket. Like, I didn't think anything was gonna come from doing Muay Thai. It was just fun at the time.

    21. JR

      Right.

    22. AH

So I went and I beat two girls, won the little- the champ- regional championship or whatever.

    23. JR

      Wow.

    24. AH

And, uh, from then on, I was just fighting. They had this show, uh, in New York called Friday Night Fights, and, um, and I got a few ch- shows on that, or a g- a few fights on that. Um, I went 14 and 0 as an amateur Muay Thai fighter, then when- before I went pro, I was trying to get an MMA fight just so I had, like, one or two amateur MMA fights under my belt so if I do decide to do it, I'd have that experience, but no one would fight me. So I ended up going pro anyway. Had two pro Muay Thai fights, and then I had my first pro MMA fight two days before the TUF tryouts.

    25. JR

      Wow.

    26. AH

      Yeah. (laughs)

    27. JR

      That's so recent.

    28. AH

      Yeah.

    29. JR

      That's crazy.

    30. AH

      Yeah.

TUF experience, rankings frustration, and why ‘being ranked’ can mess with your head

    1. JR

So then when you were on the show, how bonkers was that?

    2. AH

It was pretty nuts. I mean, I- I feel like I had a lot more fun than the other girls who lost. (laughs)

    3. JR

      'Cause you just enjoyed it?

    4. AH

'Cause I was just, yeah, I was just there for the experience. Like, I think coming in there, and this is kinda how I view my marriage too, is like going in there with low expectations. (laughs)

    5. JR

      (laughs)

    6. AH

Made it actually a lot of fun, and now I'm still married, you know? (laughs)

    7. JR

      That's hilarious.

    8. AH

      But yeah, um-

    9. JR

Ugh, that's a funny way to approach it, right?

    10. AH

      (laughs)

    11. JR

Because if people go crazy high with the expectations-

    12. AH

      Yeah, yeah.

    13. JR

...you know, no one's gonna meet those expectations, you're gonna be disappointed.

    14. AH

      Exactly.

    15. JR

      Uh-

    16. AH

I got married in City Hall, I tried out for TUF after one fight and, you know-

    17. JR

      (laughs)

    18. AH

      ...now I'm living large.

    19. JR

And what- what- how are you ranked right now? What, where do they have you?

    20. AH

      Uh, I don't know. I don't know. I don't, I doubt I'm ranked. Uh-

    21. JR

      You must be.

    22. AH

      I've never been ranked. I've-

    23. JR

What is it, how many girls are in the 115-pound division?

    24. AH

I don't know. I think, I think, uh, I've fought most, most of them. I've fought, I think I've fought about half of them, half of the top 15.

    25. JR

      Yeah.

    26. AH

And the problem is I haven't beaten anyone that's ranked now.

    27. JR

      Hmm.

    28. AH

So that justifies them for not putting me in the rankings.

    29. JR

I would've thought after the Cifars fight you would get ranked.

    30. AH

I don't- I don't know. I d- I haven't looked, and I've stopped looking. Uh, I think, uh, well, I was ranked once. I beat, uh, um, Mor- how do you say her name? Moroz? Maryna Moroz? Do you remember her? Tall, skinny-

Judging problems: Houston controversies, open scoring, and more judges

    1. JR

That's gotta be so frustrating when you're fighting as a professional and the judges... Uh, (sighs) I mean-

    2. AH

      Yeah.

    3. JR

... you know, they say this so many times. The Houston fight was fucking bananas. That card-

    4. AH

Dude, and I was so happy you guys went on that rant, because I've been seeing it, like-

    5. JR

      Dominick was going crazy.

    6. AH

      Yeah, yeah.

    7. JR

      Dominick was so angry.

    8. AH

      Yeah.

    9. JR

He was so angry. And afterwards, he was still angry.

    10. AH

      (laughs) Yeah.

    11. JR

He was so fucking mad, and he should be. He should be. It was, you know, the, the... Whoever the fuck scored Jon Jones four rounds to one over Dominick Reyes should never score a fight again.

    12. AH

      Yeah, yeah.

    13. JR

      There's no way.

    14. AH

Because it's like the criteria that you use to say that he was dominant one round, you can't possibly use that for the next round.

    15. JR

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense. Like-

    16. AH

      Yeah.

    17. JR

... Jon won for sure the last two rounds.

    18. AH

      Mm-hmm.

    19. JR

And he might've won the third. Might've won the third. I watched it, I watched that fight three times since then. I'm like-

    20. AH

      Hmm.

    21. JR

... whew, that third round is fucking close. Dominick-

    22. AH

      Yeah.

    23. JR

... landed some real good shots, but so did Jon.

    24. AH

      Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    25. JR

So did Jon. Jon kept pressing.

    26. AH

That was, like, right when he started-

    27. JR

      Yeah.

    28. AH

      ... like, slowing down.

    29. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    30. AH

      Right?

  11. 1:06:441:13:12

Travel to New Zealand, early COVID worries, and a long animal-intelligence detour

    1. JR

So you, are you leaving from here straight to the airport and going to New Zealand?

    2. AH

      Yeah.

    3. JR

What is that flight? Does it take three years? How long does it take to get there?

    4. AH

Ah, man. It's gonna feel like it.

    5. JR

      (laughs)

    6. AH

      It's like, I think it's 15 hours.

    7. JR

      Whoo.

    8. AH

      (laughs) 15 hours.

    9. JR

      15 fucking hours.

    10. AH

      So yeah, I-

    11. JR

Now, are you worried about coronavirus and shit when you fly?

    12. AH

      Yes.

    13. JR

      Yeah.

    14. AH

      Yeah. It's a-

    15. JR

Kind of have to be, right?

    16. AH

      Yeah.

    17. JR

      Yeah.

    18. AH

I, I mean, I'm less worried about it than, uh, Adam. He's like the worrywart of the two of us. So I'm kind of like, "Ah, I'll be fine. You know, whatever." But it's definitely, like, a thing that I should be worried about. Like, uh, I think it just showed up in San Diego-

    19. JR

      Jesus.

    20. AH

... uh, like last week or something.

    21. JR

      Mm-hmm.

    22. AH

Like two, two people had it in San Diego. And now that they're testing for...... uh, they're using a different test to detect it. They're getting even more cases of it, so-

    23. JR

      So scary.

    24. AH

      Yeah, it's already-

    25. JR

You know where it came from? I was just, uh, listening to a podcast.

    26. AH

      No.

    27. JR

Yeah. Um, my friend, Ryan Callahan's podcast today, they were talking about it came from people eating weird animals from a marketplace, like bats and snakes and shit.

    28. AH

      No.

    29. JR

Yeah, bro. In China, they eat whatever the fuck they can get ahold of sometimes.

    30. AH

      Yeah.
