Peterson is a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, a clinical psychologist, and the author of the multi-million copy bestseller 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, #1 for nonfiction in 2018 in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, the Netherlands, Brazil and Norway, and slated for translation into 50 languages. Raised and toughened in the frigid wastelands of Northern Alberta, Dr. Peterson has flown a hammer-head roll in a carbon-fiber stuntplane, piloted a mahogany racing sailboat around Alcatraz Island, explored an Arizona meteorite crater with a group of astronauts, built a Native American Long-House on the upper floor of his Toronto home, and been inducted into a Pacific Kwakwaka’wakw family (see charlesjoseph.ca). He’s been a dishwasher, gas jockey, bartender, short-order cook, beekeeper, oil derrick bit re-tipper, plywood mill laborer, and railway line worker. He’s taught mythology to physicians, lawyers, and businessmen; worked with Jim Balsillie, former CEO of Blackberry’s Research in Motion, on Resilient People, Resilient Planet, the report of the UN Secretary General’s High Level Panel on Global Sustainability; helped his clinical clients manage the triumphs and catastrophes of life; served as an advisor to senior partners of major Canadian law firms; penned the forward for the 50th anniversary edition of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s The Gulag Archipelago; lectured across North America, Europe, and Australia in one of the most-well attended book tours ever mounted; and, for The Founder Institute, identified thousands of promising entrepreneurs, in 60 different countries. With his students and colleagues, Dr. Peterson has published more than a hundred scientific papers, advancing the modern understanding of creativity, competence, and personality, while his now-classic book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (released in June 2018 as a now bestselling author-read audiobook) transformed the psychology of religion. He was nominated for five consecutive years as one of Ontario’s Best University Lecturers and is one of only three professors rated as “life-changing” in the U of T’s underground student handbook of course ratings. Dr. Peterson recently came out with his new book Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life, and I suggest you pick up a copy! This book is full of wisdom on how to bring order to the chaos of our daily lives. I’ve had the honor of interviewing Dr. Peterson in the past (Episodes 664 and 665), and it was a joy to have him back on the show! Our conversation was so insightful that I had to spilt it into two parts, so make sure to listen to Part One as well! WHAT IT’S REALLY ABOUT

Jordan Peterson on Illness, Marriage, Shame, Motivation, Ethics and Greatness

  1. Peterson says his health collapse showed him he should have cultivated less demanding leisure pursuits alongside his high-intensity work, and he warns against casual contempt for activities and professions we don't understand.
  2. He describes how he and his wife sustain a long marriage through honesty, early confrontation of problems, a three-strikes rule for recurring grievances, regular dates and explicit negotiation of needs.
  3. On trauma and shame, he argues that memories stay painful until they are effortfully decomposed into a more sophisticated map of the world, and he suggests writing out any old memory that still carries emotion.
  4. For motivation and confidence, he recommends small incremental goals set at the edge of one's ability, treating negative emotions like shame and resentment as signals, and deserving a good reputation rather than merely seeking one.
  5. He also covers his daily regimen of walking, exercise and a fixed schedule, his views on money, sales and merchandise, and his three truths of faith, fear of one's own deceit and gratitude.

IDEAS WORTH REMEMBERING

5 ideas

Casual contempt blocks learning

Peterson says dismissing activities or professions, such as baseball or sales, keeps people from finding things that could benefit them, and he notes that despising the necessary parts of success undermines it.

Being someone others want to play with is the best life strategy

Using a repeated-game example, he argues that generosity, reliability and productivity make people choose you, and that acting in your own long-term interest is not different from acting well toward others.

Conflict delayed is conflict multiplied

Peterson says avoided problems accumulate reasons and weaken the people avoiding them, so couples should address specific issues openly, state their conditions of satisfaction and avoid reopening the whole past.

Discipline means not being defeated by your own impulses

Describing his son sitting on the steps as a child, Peterson explains that proper discipline helps a child master impulses and become competent rather than simply punished.

Old painful memories need effortful processing

He says memory exists to build a functional map for the future, so a memory that still carries emotion needs to be broken down and understood until you are no longer vulnerable to it.
