Catch Up chaos: streamer jokes, Americans vs Brits, and immediate derailments
- CWChris Williamson
Catch up 103. Come round so fast, don't they?
- JOJonny
You'd think we'd have caught up by now, wouldn't you?
- CWChris Williamson
I went to America.
- JOJonny
Twice.
- CWChris Williamson
As far as I'm concerned.
- JOJonny
You were, you were on a podcast with Elon Musk.
- CWChris Williamson
I shared some oxygen with Elon Musk, yeah.
- JOJonny
Right. (laughs) You're trying to tell a story. (laughs)
- YUYusef
We're trying to get through this podcast, wrecking it. Absolutely destroying it.
- JOJonny
The listeners who've tuned in not to hear you two-
- YUYusef
You did yoga.
- CWChris Williamson
Just say silly things.
- YUYusef
It's our, this is our only purpose on the podcast, to just derail your story.
- JOJonny
We've got nothing interesting to say.
- CWChris Williamson
Do you know what it is as well? Like, people can say that they think that Americans are too positive or like, over the top, which is probably, probably a little bit fair, but in my experience, Americans are so much more polite than the Brits.
- JOJonny
The whole Marvel shit, and this is going to offend a lot of people, but I really struggle with it.
- CWChris Williamson
Careful, careful. BMB's gonna-
- JOJonny
Yeah.
- YUYusef
Have you seen any of them?
- JOJonny
Yeah.
- YUYusef
Which ones?
- JOJonny
There's a guy with a big glove. Big bloke, big glove.
- YUYusef
Is it called Big Fist?
- JOJonny
And like little midget gems that he has to put in the glove. And when he puts the midget gems in the glove-
- YUYusef
(laughs)
- JOJonny
... (laughs) he, uh, he kills those people.
- CWChris Williamson
Hang on.
- JOJonny
Are you serious?
- YUYusef
Yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
Sorry.
- 2:10 – 3:16
Life updates: injuries, CrossFit identity crisis, and med-school endgame stress
- CWChris Williamson
Have you got a, a synopsis of what's happened over the last sort of two months for you?
- JOJonny
No.
- YUYusef
Johnny doesn't drink eggs anymore.
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
Doesn't drink eggs anymore. Got injured.
- YUYusef
Mm-hmm.
- CWChris Williamson
Johnny got injured. You've been a hermit.
- JOJonny
I did. I did get injured.
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah. You're doing CrossFit.
- JOJonny
Yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
You're now CrossFit.
- JOJonny
As of... Well-
- CWChris Williamson
As of tomorrow.
- JOJonny
I mean, when this goes live, anything might have happened.
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah.
- JOJonny
So many things in life.
- CWChris Williamson
What I love is the fact that you're...
- YUYusef
What, what constitutes you are doing CrossFit like you, you did a CrossFit? Does that mean you're now doing CrossFit?
- CWChris Williamson
What's your current training methodology, Johnny?
- JOJonny
(laughs) Great question. As of right now?
- CWChris Williamson
CrossFit.
- JOJonny
(sighs)
- CWChris Williamson
Say it.
- JOJonny
Well, no, because I haven't done a CrossFit yet.
- CWChris Williamson
Done a CrossFit. (laughs) Right, anyway.
- JOJonny
Like I have to do the CrossFit like three hour, this is how to CrossFit.
- CWChris Williamson
Yep, you do. Anyway, moving on.
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- YUYusef
(laughs) I feel like we were just pawning Johnny with questions there.
- JOJonny
That's okay.
- 3:16 – 5:06
The economics of failure: resitting med school, opportunity cost, and time-as-money
- CWChris Williamson
What are the final few weeks of doing a medical degree like, for anyone who's considering doing it?
- YUYusef
So your, your, your anal tone is non-existent.
- JOJonny
When you say anal tone-
- YUYusef
Yeah.
- JOJonny
... can you describe what you mean?
- YUYusef
(clears throat) You, that you can't maintain the integrity of your fecal continence.
- CWChris Williamson
So your bum, bum is normally, but instead...
- YUYusef
It's just (whooshes) .
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah.
- YUYusef
Honestly.
- JOJonny
Farts don't make a sound.
- CWChris Williamson
Like a windsock.
- JOJonny
Yeah.
- YUYusef
Yeah. And I- I'm, I'm saying that as an analogy for the intense fear that I experience day-to-day at the moment. So, this time last year, I had a heart rate monitor and my resting heart rate was between 80 and 100-
- JOJonny
Was that the Withings watch?
- CWChris Williamson
Withings.
- YUYusef
Yeah.
- JOJonny
Nokia watch.
- CWChris Williamson
Definitely didn't give that away from an influencer program for free. Sorry, Withings.
- YUYusef
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
Um, so what's the fear? The fear is comprised of having to re-sit the year.
- YUYusef
Yeah.
- JOJonny
It's, it's the nine grand, isn't it?
- YUYusef
It's the nine grand.
- CWChris Williamson
Is that it?
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- YUYusef
Yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
So what if someone gave you nine grand now and said, "If you have to re-sit the year, we'll pay it."
- JOJonny
You'd wanna use the nine grand for something else.
- CWChris Williamson
But you can't do that.
- 5:06 – 10:50
America Trip #1: ROMWOD filming, intense yoga, and the 'silicon' studio clientele
- CWChris Williamson
I went to America.
- JOJonny
Twice.
- CWChris Williamson
Twice. Twice.
- JOJonny
You went to America-
- YUYusef
Two times.
- CWChris Williamson
... back.
- JOJonny
And then you'd gone, done gone back to it again.
- CWChris Williamson
And came, came back again, yeah. Like a boom run.
- YUYusef
It was such a short gap between the two trips.
- JOJonny
Two weeks. It was like a shuttle run.
- CWChris Williamson
Two weeks.
- YUYusef
What stopped you just staying there? Did you have things you had to take care of?
- CWChris Williamson
I'd, I'd have, I'd have been... Well, yeah. I have a life.
- YUYusef
Dogs to feed.
- JOJonny
CrossFit.
- CWChris Williamson
I have CrossFit to do.
- YUYusef
CrossFit to fist. Fist to cross.
- CWChris Williamson
Um, so yeah, no, first trip was really cool. Um, flew out to Redlands to go and film with Romwood again. Um, got to see Daniel and Shauna, the two, uh, people that own that. And Daniel showed me his fancy new 911 Turbo, um, which was a terrifying vehicle.
- JOJonny
Is it supple?
- CWChris Williamson
Is it supple? Yeah, it's very, uh-
- YUYusef
911, it's the best.
- CWChris Williamson
It's, it's lost its, uh... What?
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
I don't get it.
- JOJonny
I don't know what you mean.
- YUYusef
It, that's it, it was a terrible reference to... If anyone knows in the comments.
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
What, 911, it's the best?
- YUYusef
Yeah.
- JOJonny
This isn't a joke based on...
- 10:50 – 14:42
American enthusiasm in workouts: the 'whoo' culture and DJ-driven yoga
- CWChris Williamson
One thing, one thing that, um, Daniel Sloss said when I was speaking to him was he said that Americans tend to make, like, a "whoo" noise from the back of the room. And I was like-
- JOJonny
In yoga?
- CWChris Williamson
No.
- JOJonny
Oh, sorry.
- CWChris Williamson
Just generally when he's doing his sets, and he's, like, very-
- YUYusef
Generally enthusiasm. Like-
- CWChris Williamson
So i- i- yeah, it's enthusiasm, but it's just fucking-
- YUYusef
Like peeling a peanut. "Whoo."
- CWChris Williamson
It's just off-putting, right?
- YUYusef
Yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
Like, he doesn't like the fact that they do it, and he complains at them, and he tells them off. And he's like, "Look, every time that you do that, I'm gonna stop."
- YUYusef
Oh, really? It's very at odds with the Scottish mindset.
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah, a bit more kind of, yeah, London.
- YUYusef
Mm-hmm.
- CWChris Williamson
Um, so he says that he's gonna stop, and I wa- I was laughing about the fact that they do this, 'cause it's like Ric Flair. Right? Remember Ric Flair, the wrestler? Anyway, the ... that was a perfect opportunity to derail the podcast, and you've just-
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
... totally missed it. Um, so I'm in this yoga class, and he's already warned me about this "whooing" thing that Americans do. And as it's starting to build up and the intensity of this yoga workout's getting more and more, people start "whooing" from the back of the class. And they're like, "Come on, you've got this. You can, you can stay like ..." If you're doing, like, a hollow hold or, like, a, like, a ab crunch or whatever, and you're holding it for a little while.
- JOJonny
Mm-hmm.
- CWChris Williamson
And there's people from the back of the class that are "whooing". What I noticed was it was a lot of the people who had dropped the hold ...And it's like, look, if you've said hold the bottom of an air squat, and everyone's in the bottom of an air squat, and you're stood up and you're going "woo"-
- JOJonny
Mm-hmm.
- CWChris Williamson
... that seems unfair.
- JOJonny
Just taking the piss, aren't you?
- CWChris Williamson
Don't pretend to be a part of the people that are grinding it out.
- JOJonny
It's not very, like, deep Ujjayi breaths, is it? It's not-
- CWChris Williamson
Mm-mm. No.
- JOJonny
Like, the yoga that I used to do-
- YUYusef
We never do that in our yoga.
- CWChris Williamson
(laughs) So it's very, very untraditional. They mix music live. Like, they've got DJ decks that they mix music live, and loop the music as they build up the-
- JOJonny
Oh, right.
- CWChris Williamson
... intensity. Unc- incr- incredibly well done.
- 14:42 – 17:07
LA culture tour: Venice-to–Santa Monica scooter ecosystem and micro-mobility economics
- CWChris Williamson
So you can fall, your head through. So that was fun. Um, and then, yeah, went to, went to LA and spent a fair bit of time on Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Um, and was just reintroduced to this electric scooter phenomenon which is completely destroying LA. In a cool way, but it's just the maddest thing to see now. There's, for people who don't know, Bird, Lime, uh, I think it's like Up and something else are brands of scooter companies-
- JOJonny
Oh, okay.
- CWChris Williamson
... who have just dropped these 24 kilometer range electric mini scooters, like what you'd see kids riding around on, um, schoolchildren. But they've got a little trigger on them which, when you push it, accelerates up to about 16 miles an hour and a little brake, and everyone is just whizzing around on these scooters. And you open it like a, um, one of those ride-on, uh, bikes that you can get in the UK at the moment.
- YUYusef
It's like a micro scooter.
- CWChris Williamson
With an electric motor.
- YUYusef
Is it 'cause the town is so fast that you need something to get you around?
- CWChris Williamson
It's because a lot of people already skate and bike, and there's heavily pedestrianized areas that are built for, or um, I guess, riding areas that are built for exactly that.
- YUYusef
What's the problem with normal bicycles?
- CWChris Williamson
That they're not as cool.
- YUYusef
Okay.
- CWChris Williamson
And they don't go as fast. Like, unless you're really gunning it-
- YUYusef
And you have to, you have to be absolutely everywhere.
- CWChris Williamson
... you have to use it. So every different iteration of scooter and electric vehicle is now being used by these people. So you've got, like, an electric scooter one, then you've got a bike one where you can both pedal and, uh, use the electric motor to go even faster, and they're fucking rapid. Um, and there's a skateboard one now where you're just a skateboard with a remote control, and you scan it, and you can just deposit them wherever you stop and-
- JOJonny
So it's, it's exactly like the bikes in the UK.
- CWChris Williamson
Yes, yeah.
- JOJonny
But much better.
- CWChris Williamson
Much better, faster, more, um, like cheaper as well. It's a dollar to start and like, I think it's like 15 cent a minute. It's like 10p a minute to ride however far you want.
- JOJonny
I suppose you're using power, aren't you?
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah. And then there's a-
- YUYusef
Do you have to dock it in certain stations?
- CWChris Williamson
No, so there's the, an entire sub-, uh, market of chargers so people get paid to charge these things. You sign up as a charger, take the things home with you, plug them into your wall, and then you get money based on how many you charge.
- 17:07 – 18:53
Self-driving futures: renting out Teslas, automation risk psychology, and robot surgery hypotheticals
- YUYusef
Oh. I'm so looking forward to this, like, decentralization of ............................ So with the Tesla thing as well, you know, they're saying you can, if you get a Tesla that has the, the full self-driving unit, you can then Uber it out to people when you're not using it. So it can take you to work, and then you just leave it to just taxi people around.
- CWChris Williamson
Is that really what they've said?
- JOJonny
Apparently, yeah.
- YUYusef
There's an internal, internal facing camera if someone, like, spunks or vomits in your car, and then you can always clean that up. (laughs)
- JOJonny
Or both, at once.
- YUYusef
VMD was just like trying to...
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- YUYusef
Um, yeah, or both, and then you can just charge them for it. So um-
- JOJonny
Just automatically as well.
- YUYusef
So it could just make you money while you-
- CWChris Williamson
That is-
- JOJonny
I feel like there's a-
- YUYusef
I cannot wait for those cars.
- JOJonny
... there's a gap for... 'Cause th- I mean, they already exist, don't they? Teslas can already drive themselves, but it's-
- YUYusef
I think they will.
- JOJonny
They have to be safe enough that you can just...
- YUYusef
Yeah. Did, did we talk about this last time, where we were saying how people would rather die of their own-
- JOJonny
Mm-hmm. Volition.
- YUYusef
Voli- Yeah, their, their own folly than die from an automated car.
- JOJonny
Yeah.
- YUYusef
Even though the, the chance of dying is like 1,000 times less.
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah.
- YUYusef
It's like...
- CWChris Williamson
It's just people don't like putting their, uh, life in the hands of something ... Th- they would much, much sooner make their own, make their own error, wouldn't they?
- YUYusef
Would you, if you were offered to have, if you had to have surgery for something, and you were offered to have it done by a robotic algorithm that's got the, like micro-
- CWChris Williamson
Mm-hmm.
- YUYusef
... things, would you do it?
- CWChris Williamson
Uh, I'd want to see what the success rate.
- YUYusef
Okay. Like assuming it had a much higher success rate-
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah, fine.
- 18:53 – 24:21
Movie & pop-culture tangent: Pirates of the Caribbean rant and Marvel fatigue
- CWChris Williamson
I'm going to interject here, 'cause I can't get out of my mind.
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
This new Pirates of the Caribbean movie-
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
... which has just come on Netflix is fucking shit.
- JOJonny
Not seen it.
- CWChris Williamson
Captain Jack Sparrow steals a safe which attaches itself to an entire house or bank, and then they have like four horses that have a ... You can imagine all these horses have got ropes behind them, they've attached it into this safe. They pull the safe and it's this comedy thing where they've hooked it through the back of the building, and the safe's gonna pop through the back of the building, but they don't. They just drag the whole building for like two towns. And the entire building's being pulled behind all of these horses. Can you understand what I mean?
- JOJonny
Yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
And it's just, that's ridiculous. And Johnny Depp has completely lost his mind. Just running around like ... Well, it's ju- yeah. I mean-
- JOJonny
I'm Captain Jack Sparrow.
- CWChris Williamson
The, the worst thing is that I don't think that he even knows who he is when he takes off the Captain Jack Sparrow thing now.
- JOJonny
Mm-hmm.
- CWChris Williamson
Like, he's been shaving his head and wearing like T-shirts with slogans on.
- JOJonny
He did, did something a while ago where he like smuggled a dog into Australia or something.
- CWChris Williamson
Did he?
- JOJonny
Yeah, did you see that-
- CWChris Williamson
No.
- JOJonny
... on the news? It was a w- it was a while ago. Like, I'm sure him and his wife, if he has a wife, this is how out of touch I am with this.
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah.
- JOJonny
He was on the news. Do you know what it is, Dean?
- YUYusef
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
Dean can't, Dean can't speak.
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
Dean doesn't speak. Dean doesn't know what it is. (laughs) He's shaking his head at me.
- YUYusef
Dean doesn't speak.
- JOJonny
He did something where he was having to publicly apologize for smuggling a dog-
- CWChris Williamson
For smuggling a dog.
- JOJonny
... (laughs) into the country.
- CWChris Williamson
Jesus Christ.
- JOJonny
That's right.
- 24:21 – 36:22
Physio fads, TMJ myths, and why every rehab plan becomes clamshells
- YUYusef
Someone I met, um, said that she had a tight jaw, TMJ, and she met someone who was-
- CWChris Williamson
TMJ?
- YUYusef
Teeth, temporomandibular dysfunction. Uh-
- CWChris Williamson
TMD? VMD?
- YUYusef
J, jaw. Jump, I don't know. Um, and massage therapist told her it was because her pelvic floor was tight-
- CWChris Williamson
Oh my God.
- YUYusef
... and needed to, like-
- CWChris Williamson
Here we go.
- YUYusef
... release the pelvic floor. (laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
This is, this is just, we're venturing into the worlds of chiropractors now.
- YUYusef
(laughs)
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
What do you ... Like, everyone's been to a physio, you know, where-
- YUYusef
I'm gonna trigger some chiropractors here.
- CWChris Williamson
... no matter what, no matter what the problem is-
- YUYusef
Clamshells.
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
Like all, always the clamshells.
- YUYusef
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
It's your glute function.
- YUYusef
Side-lying clams.
- CWChris Williamson
Like, my, my, mate at my shoulder hits, "Well, I think it could be to do with your glute activation." I'm like, "I'm sure it isn't, mate."
- YUYusef
So I would love if anyone could let us know in the comments, if you're a physio or if you know physios, why are some physios so faddy? 'Cause you, you know, you get the physio that just loves, um, kinesio tape and just puts it on-
- CWChris Williamson
Everything.
- YUYusef
... everywhere, regardless of what the problem is.
- CWChris Williamson
Placebo tapes have been a common one.
- YUYusef
Placebo ... Oh, God. And then, like-
- CWChris Williamson
X-band walks or-
- YUYusef
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
... single-leg glute bridge.
- 36:22 – 45:19
Boston trip: bloodwork results, InsideTracker, and meeting longevity scientist David Sinclair (and maybe Elon)
- CWChris Williamson
It's a weird one. So, yeah, did that, then went to Boston. Um-
- JOJonny
Boston.
- CWChris Williamson
Boston. Uh-
- JOJonny
Great, uh, it's gr- it's the best American accent ............................
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah, it's sick.
- JOJonny
Yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
So I spent a bit of time with Carrie from Inside Tracker. She was the, the lady who I was dealing with from them lovely people that flew me out there. And, um-
- JOJonny
Did you have your bloods done?
- CWChris Williamson
(clears throat) Did I have-
- JOJonny
Bloods.
- CWChris Williamson
I had my bloods done, um, which will be on an episode which everyone's already heard. Um-
- JOJonny
Yeah, every bit.
- CWChris Williamson
Every bit of it.
- JOJonny
What did they measure and what were the results?
- CWChris Williamson
Um-
- JOJonny
'Cause I haven't listened to the episode.
- CWChris Williamson
Well, it doesn't exist yet. So, it's out, it's out next week. But the last, like, two weeks ago in podcast land.
- JOJonny
Right.
- CWChris Williamson
Uh-
- JOJonny
Love the place podcast land is.
- CWChris Williamson
It's crazy.
- JOJonny
I love being here.
- YUYusef
It's great.
- CWChris Williamson
I know. There's a time-
- JOJonny
'Cause nothing's happened yet.
- CWChris Williamson
Where time and space don't exist.
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
Um, but it was fun, and Carrie's the first person who's got, like, born and bred near Boston, um, and just has the accent.
- JOJonny
Right.
- CWChris Williamson
Such, such a fantastic accent.
- 45:19 – 49:00
Privacy, surveillance, and screens: DNA inference, taped webcams, and addictive tech
- YUYusef
The, I think the, I hear constantly that like the, the self-tracking wearables world-
- CWChris Williamson
Mm-hmm.
- YUYusef
... like, that's where there's gonna be the most, um-
- CWChris Williamson
Mm-hmm.
- YUYusef
... jump in and advancement. You know, like d- I, uh, before, it won't be long before there's an implant that you wear that me- that monitors your markers.
- CWChris Williamson
I think-
- YUYusef
It creeps me out, that whole prospect.
- CWChris Williamson
I think that would be fantastic. Like, waking up and there's an app just giving you your life. You're a chartered accountant.
- YUYusef
Yeah, I just want ... Just give me graphs and data.
- CWChris Williamson
Just give me-
- YUYusef
Charts and trends.
- CWChris Williamson
But the price you pay for that, there's a guy who does a really haunting video about the, what's it called, 23andMe? And they're like doing DNA analysis stuff. Oh, yeah, the DNA stuff.
- YUYusef
Saying that you only need a certain critical mass of people to, to do it and then you can draw these inferences and you can use it for forensic things. So if someone's committed, someone's committed a crime, you can then find who it is through like three levels of facts, of relationship. And so, like they, he was saying how they, basically the, some intelligence agency found who committed this crime just from Googling DNA data.
- CWChris Williamson
Jesus.
- YUYusef
And finding like three people who it could be and then speaking to their family and-
- CWChris Williamson
This is one of the problems I suppose that everyone has with this constant surveillance thing. It's that the price that you pay for more data that you can use is more data that can be used against you. "I've got nothing to hide" is a fantastic, um, way to feel about your data being collected until you have something to hide.
- YUYusef
I think it's just the, it's looking at the motive. So it's, it's the, the means and the motive, isn't it? So like someone has ... Facebook have your data. Like yeah, they can use it against you, but like why would they want to? Well, it's not that they wouldn't, but it's more like, what do they stand to get out of it? Yeah. And yeah, you might, you might become a person of great political influence or whatever, but I- I just think on balance, it's unlikely and then- So why, why do you think Zuckerberg has tape over his camera? I didn't know he did. So, you know, when he was in the court case, like there was a, a shot of him on his MacBook.
- CWChris Williamson
He has tape over his camera?
- YUYusef
And someone was going, yeah, and they were like, "Zuckerberg's taped over his mic and his camera." You see, when you see something like that... (clicks tongue) I found that quite worrying. You should put tape over your camera.
- CWChris Williamson
I mean, the- the main thing-
- YUYusef
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
The main thing for me is that Steve Jobs, inventor of the iPad, didn't let his kids play with iPads.
- YUYusef
Yeah, that's another-
- CWChris Williamson
He does not-
- YUYusef
Is that, is that for data reasons or is that because he doesn't like the idea of the-
- CWChris Williamson
It's because they're addictive.
- YUYusef
Yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
And they're horrible pieces of technology that-
- YUYusef
Yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
... destroy people's ability to focus.
- 49:00 – 1:02:04
End-of-the-world rabbit hole: Amazon drones, slaughterbots, CRISPR plagues, and Black Mirror-style extortion
- CWChris Williamson
I was reading about Amazon's future logistics plans. Have you read this?
- JOJonny
With the drone stuff?
- YUYusef
Oh.
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah. So with drones and, but more so with just traditional, um, postal service at the moment.
- JOJonny
Right.
- CWChris Williamson
So just buying up fleets of plane, like Jeff Bezos is buying up fleets of planes.
- YUYusef
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
And it, they were comparing them, and is it the American Postal Service? Are they the big ones?
- JOJonny
Mm-hmm.
- CWChris Williamson
Um, I think the American Postal Service have got nearly 1,000 planes and Amazon have 63, but they're just-
- YUYusef
Just growing them.
- CWChris Williamson
... yeah, just consuming.
- JOJonny
You've seen the clip of the drones being dropped out the back of an Amazon plane?
- CWChris Williamson
And then going to go and-
- JOJonny
Mm-hmm.
- CWChris Williamson
... deliver parcels.
- JOJonny
Yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah.
- YUYusef
So that's another thing. You, you, have you seen, you, you, we've all seen the video of like the mock, um-
- JOJonny
Slaughterbots?
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah.
- YUYusef
Yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
Yeah, we've talked about that a few times.
- YUYusef
Oh.
- CWChris Williamson
They're pretty, they're pretty scary.
- JOJonny
The, there's a really interesting podcast.
- CWChris Williamson
Naval?
- JOJonny
No.
- CWChris Williamson
Oh.
- JOJonny
It's called Masters of Scale. Have you heard of it?
- 1:02:04 – 1:06:09
Training pivot: Jonny quits powerlifting (for now), CrossFit on-ramp anxiety, and why enjoyment matters
- CWChris Williamson
I wrote some things down on my phone.
- YUYusef
For catch up?
- JOJonny
Oh, it was this morning before I did my go WOD.
- CWChris Williamson
Nice.
- YUYusef
Ah.
- JOJonny
Nope.
- YUYusef
We've got life hacks next.
- CWChris Williamson
We have got life hacks, although life hacks will probably be-
- JOJonny
Did my first five kilometer run.
- YUYusef
Oh, yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
How was your first five kilometer run?
- JOJonny
Really, really fucking difficult.
- CWChris Williamson
Okay. You did Fran?
- JOJonny
I did do Fran, but I can't do a thruster. I've not got the shoulder mobility to get into a front rack position at the bottom of a front squat.
- CWChris Williamson
That's years of bench for you there.
- JOJonny
So I had to do a be- a behind the neck thruster.
- CWChris Williamson
I can't wait. So we're doing ... For the people that are listening, this will be in the past now, but me and Johnny are doing his crossfit on ramp tomorrow. Um, Johnny thought that it was going to be someone putting him in a pair of water wings and a special helmet-
- JOJonny
(laughs)
- CWChris Williamson
... and saying, "So this is how you do a squat."
- JOJonny
That's honestly what I thought. (laughs) And it's, it's not that.
- CWChris Williamson
Um, what it ra- what it actually is, is a two and a half hour training session where there's-
- JOJonny
Yeah.
- CWChris Williamson
... some movements demoed and then metcons that use those movements interlaced in the workout, uh, like the overall workout.
- JOJonny
Metabolic conditioning.
- YUYusef
Is it a standardized thing?
- CWChris Williamson
No.
- JOJonny
Okay.
- CWChris Williamson
So just whatever this bloke fancies. Yeah.
- JOJonny
Oh, no.
- CWChris Williamson
And the guy that's taking it won't be tremendously gentle either, I'm afraid.
- 1:06:09 – 1:11:59
Extreme mindset stories: Ant Middleton’s Everest decisions and ultra-endurance insanity
- JOJonny
Uh, I went to see Ant Middleton.
- CWChris Williamson
Is that the guy that does it with Dec?
- JOJonny
(laughs) No. Have you seen-
- CWChris Williamson
Is he the one in rehab?
- JOJonny
No. That's Ant.
- CWChris Williamson
Is Dec the one in rehab?
- JOJonny
No. So it's not Ant and Dec.
- CWChris Williamson
Okay.
- JOJonny
Right? Ant Middleton is the presenter, one of the presenters on-
- CWChris Williamson
I'm a Celebrity.
- JOJonny
No.
- CWChris Williamson
(laughs)
- JOJonny
SAS. This is like the David Goggins.
- CWChris Williamson
Who even the fuck is David Goggins?
- JOJonny
It's the same as Gog- Chris, shut the fuck up. No, it's, um, he's, he presents the SAS: Are You Tough Enough?
- CWChris Williamson
Right.
- JOJonny
Thing. Former special forces guy. So Be-
- CWChris Williamson
Is it a one to one?
- JOJonny
No. He's, he's quite famous now.
- CWChris Williamson
Right.
- JOJonny
He did a talk at the city hall, Becka got me tickets for Christmas-
- CWChris Williamson
Yep.
- JOJonny
... um, called Mind Over Muscle. Now, both of you would have found it intensely difficult to sit through because it was very ... It was like, "I've got a positive, I have a positive mindset, right?"
- YUYusef
Oh, okay.
- JOJonny
"Got to look at the situation and just think, how can I think positively about it," and you're sort of like, "Fuck's sake." But there are a few things he said that were really interesting. Principally, it, there's clips where he climbs Everest and you can just see glimpses of, like, what it takes to be in the SAS. So like, there are people coming down Everest. So he's, you're meant to go like, base camp, camp one, back down again. Base camp, camp one, camp two, camp one, down again, and do it that way.
- YUYusef
Why?
- JOJonny
To gl- gradually acclimatize to the altitude. He was like, did base camp, camp one, saw that there was a dangerous bit, risky bit, where there'd been a avalanche, so he's like, "Oh, fuck that. I'm not, I don't want to do that multiple times. I'll just go base camp, camp one, back down again, and I'll just go to the summit." And everyone's like, "Uh, mate, don't fucking," like the Sherpas are going like, "Don't want to do that, mate." He's like, "Yeah, it's all right." And he's going up and there's a storm, storm warning. Everyone's like, "We need to turn back." He's like, "No, it's okay."
