There will be much greater seriousness applied to pandemic resistance in the future. The question is, will it be adequate attention, and will it be sustained attention, and will it be intelligent attention?

Mm-hmm.

Yep.

I mean, and CFCs were scary, but, um, obviously they moved slowly enough that we were more or less able to fix the problem before we were all dead.

(laughs) Someone replied and said, "Maybe that was the great filter that all the other civilizations just-"

So, today we're going to be talking about existential risk. My favorite terrifying topic, and also your, one of your areas of expertise.

Rob Reid

Mm-hmm. Definitely. And it's amazing how seductive the topic is to a lot of us. It's, it's like we can't take our eyes away from it. We get fascinated, like what you just read to me. It, this is, it probably says something bad about me psychologically, but my main reaction was like, "How cool."

Chris Williamson

(laughs)

I mean, obviously we dodged the bullet, so that's pretty nice, but like, wow, another existential risk that I didn't even know about. (laughs)

Chris Williamson

What do you think it is about that? Because I have the same fascination.

Rob Reid

I, you know, maybe it's something that was, you know, drilled into us when our, you know, distant ancestors were growing up on the savanna. Maybe there's something about being fascinated by things that can annihilate one, oneself, um, that conferred some kind of survival ad- advantage. And, I'm just riffing here, and I'm just, I'm just gonna make this up, but, you know, particularly the head of the clan, the hunter-gatherer clan, whoever the boss was, you know, chieftain, whatever you want to call that person, um, really needed to think about what could kill us all. And the head of the clan probably was a man, and probably fathered far more children than people who were not head of the clan. And so, we all have a lot of head of clan DNA in us. I'm making this up as I'm going along, but I like that, I like that theory. So, we probably do, as a statement of fact, all have a lot of head of clan DNA, 'cause there were thousands of generations, and the heads of the clans were the people who probably had the most progeny, and the heads of the clans really did have to think about not just what could kill me, a saber-toothed tiger on a hunt or whatever, but what could wipe us all out. Really need to think about that. Um, and the successful ones continued to have progeny. So, that's my answer.
