Why 90% of People Think They're Shy (And Why They're Wrong) | Vinh Giang

Vinh Giang, the communication coach with more than 17 million followers and author of Before We Forget How to Connect, sat down with Lewis to explain why "I'm just not charismatic" is never permanent. At 14, after years of being bullied as the kid who couldn't speak English, he asked his parents to let him change his name from Quang to Vinh, the middle name of every one of his uncles, so he could break the mold everyone had put him in. He walks Lewis through the simple exercise he gives every student: record yourself talking for five minutes, then review it three ways (sound only, picture only, then the transcript) and pick one thing to fix from each. He also breaks down why confidence comes from how you look and sound before it ever shows up as a feeling, why you should practise new habits on strangers first, and his three-part story framework: Spark, Point, Link. One story stays with you: the uncle who carried Vinh on his back as a child, the man who got the whole family onto a boat out of Vietnam on a stormy night, and who had to leave the love of his life behind to do it. Vinh shares something his family still doesn't talk about, and what it taught him about the songs we're most afraid to sing. When this one ends, you'll want to hit record on yourself for five minutes, and then go tell someone a story you've been holding on to.
