In this episode, I’m joined by Zen Master, author and meditation teacher Henry Shukman to explore how meditation can change the way we understand ourselves, find meaning and experience the world around us. Henry is the co-founder of The Way meditation app, and this is his third appearance on the podcast. But this time, our conversation takes us somewhere new. I share a deeply affecting experience I had at a retreat earlier this year, when the usual boundary between myself and the world around me seemed to dissolve. It was an experience unlike anything I’d felt before, and I wanted to understand what had happened. Henry helps me make sense of it, introducing the idea of non-dual awakening and exploring what it means to experience life beyond our usual sense of separation. We also discuss why so many of us tie our worth to achievement and productivity, and how meditation can help us discover a different way of living, one that doesn’t depend on constantly proving ourselves. Henry explains why we often mistake our conditioned pace for our natural one, how slowing down can reconnect us with the extraordinary in the ordinary, and why meaning and happiness may not be found where we’ve been looking for them. Henry answers some of your most-asked questions about meditation, including how to build a consistent practice, find time to meditate around work and family life, and carry greater awareness into the rest of your day. We also explore the relationship between meditation, shame, addiction and cravings, why creating space between an urge and an action can make a difference, and how learning not to react can transform our relationships. At the heart of the conversation is a simple but profound idea: we may not need to achieve more, acquire more or become someone different to find a deeper sense of meaning. Sometimes, the first step is simply to become still enough to recognise what is already here. Whether you’re new to meditation or have been practising for years, this conversation offers a fresh perspective on how meditation can reach far beyond feeling calm, changing how we relate to ourselves, the people we love and the life we’re already living. 🌱 Want to feel better and live more?
