EPISODE DESCRIPTION
Misty Copeland grew up sleeping on a motel floor with five siblings, unsure where the next meal was coming from. At 13, she walked into her first ballet class and felt something she'd never felt before: safe. Dr. Becky talks with the first Black woman to become a principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre about the years she was asked to paint her skin to match the rest of the corps, the mentors who taught her to advocate for herself, and what confidence looks like once you stop having to prove it. Plus: how she's raising her own son with the stability she spent her childhood without, and why she still wants him to struggle a little. Misty Copeland has written a new book for middle grade readers called "Firebird Waltz" (https://www.amazon.com/Firebird-Waltz-Star-Fire-Academy/dp/1534475419/ref=sr_1_1?crid=EL8D7KH5W9S5&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.mF9pPNDWGuli0BA9oblrwVjUS764rP8HroZFkn5G2hPwuV5ZAf29da-c7qSVZRCXSwX_fBtQNard5xwknhnPjg.8VDDlZdiXc4PppBbD634GnzuadtNefrJH7bOAeFNe_g&dib_tag=se&keywords=misty+copeland+star+fire+academy&qid=1788520148&sprefix=misty+cop%2Caps%2C474&sr=8-1) - the first in a new series called Star Fire Academy. 00:00 Intro and welcome 05:53 "Freedom within the form" 10:19 Learning to improvise, working with Prince 14:58 Growing up in instability — motels, five siblings, one room 20:45 Being asked real questions about her life for the first time 25:07 Being asked to paint her skin to match the corps 30:06 What confidence actually means, and parenting without overcorrecting 35:01 Rapid-fire questions and closing thoughts Learn more at https://www.goodinside.com/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=traffic_evergreen&utm_content=description_20260717 Thank you to our partners for making this episode possible: Skylight: Get $30 off a 15-inch Skylight Calendar at myskylight.com/becky (https://myskylight.com/becky) SmartyPants: Shop SmartyPants Vitamins at Target, Walmart, or Amazon today (https://www.smartypantsvitamins.com/) Shop Frida at Amazon, Target, and Walmart today (https://frida.com/) Oso & Me: Use the code OSOGOOD15 for 15% off clothes newborn through age ten (https://www.osoandme.com/)
