How Cognitive Distortions Keep you STUCK – 4 Way to Stop Negative Thinking | Shadé Zahrai

Psychology researchers have known for a while about something called cognitive distortions. These are negative or irrational patterns thought patterns that can play a role in diminishing your motivation, destroying your self-esteem and contributing to mental health problems like anxiety and depression. Any of these negative thought patterns are dangerous because they lead you to believe something that isn’t true. They lead you to inaccurately perceive reality, and it can be very damaging. The term cognitive distortions was coined in 1963 by psychologist and researcher Aaron Beck (1963) to describe “idiosyncratic thought content indicative of distorted or unrealistic conceptualizations’”. (Reference) In this episode I share some of the most common cognitive distortions I’ve come across in our work with professionals all around the world, and 4 powerful practices you can apply to avoid getting sucked in.
